>Year 473 of the Raschan Calendar

"I hate Carna!" You say, hugging your knees in your room with a big lump on your head, your mother tried to comfort you, but the little pecks she gave your bump didn't help.

Just some hours previous, you and Carna were playing demons in the house, the irony of this wouldn't occur to you for some years later. When things got a little bit too hectic, Carna jumped and knocked over some things in your father's work. Nothing was so fragile that it broke, but a hard piece knocked you on the head.

It hurt, certainly not enough to make a grown man cry, but you were just a child then and having more women than men around your life did little to toughen you up. Carna tried to calm you down, but your father enterred his room where you really ought not to have been playing and shooed Carna out before letting your mother deal with you. He wasn't a cold father, he certainly took the time to play with you and he always ate dinner with the family but he had never liked Carna's influence on you.

You couldn't blame him, after-all...

>Your father was the village's mayor, beloved by the citizens.
>Your father managed the market's exports, everyone relied on him to make sure their wares sold.
>Your father was the village guard captain, although he only captained three men, it was up to him to keep everyone safe.

Also, a little criticsm, it is not good practice to give options that players have no idea what the consequences of the choices are and/or have no base knowledge or reason to choose one over the other.

You were still sniveling when your mother left to make dinner. At this point your head didn't hurt at all anymore, but every time your father got angry you couldn't help but hide yourself. There were high expectations of you, not only from your parents but from the village as a whole, in the last twenty years, you and Carna were the only children born in the village but while she always got out of trouble with her big smile, you couldn't help but cry and get scolded every time something bad happened.

You heard a knocking from the window, and you stumbled over in your little feet to answer. When you open you open your blinds you see Carna peeking from behind the window.

You open the window and mumble to Carna, "I hate you Carna..."

Carna smiled and placed a palm on her cheek, leaning forward with her head tilted to the side, her blonde pigtails turned with her, "Do you really hate me?"

You didn't reply, you just sat there looking at her as snot dripped down your nose.

Carna tussled your hair and laid a kiss on the bump, unlike your mother's efforts, just the one from Carna alone seemed to take the pain away.

"Don't worry about it, okay?" She told you.

Looking back on it, she never really apologized. That was how Carna was, she never said sorry, sometimes it made you angry but to hear her whisper those words...

And so the dream ends.

>>31168728
I will keep this in mind for the future.
>>
Year 484 of the Raschan Calendar

Ten years ago you lost her, Carna; who never apologized. Now ten years later, you'll pick birdseed off the ground to find her.

You're nearly a week into your classes with The Seekers of Catus, an organization said to hold all the secrets of the world, which with any luck would include Carna's wear-abouts. The first day of class, they made you go on a wild dove chase through Deneb, but the rest of the week from there had been quiet lessons on Raschan history. You're not sure which is worse.

At the end of today's class, your stern teacher Masoch decides to take a few moments to speak, "Tomorrow will be your first week's end with The Seekers. We will not be holding classes on those days as the Grand Archivist has decided that that you need some freedom before you're bound by our codes. Do not cause trouble around town and do not stray so far from the city that you'll be late for classes the day after. The dorm will not provide food on those nights, but the kitchen will be open for use. I will be dispensing an allowance to each of you now."

Masoch doesn't move. It takes a minute before Yu'yen gets up and walks over to the front where Masoch drops some coins in Yu'yens palm. One by one everyone else collects as they leave, until they exit the classroom.

"Hey friend," Your friend Yu'yen catches you as you exit the room, "This has been on my mind for awhile but... you kind of stink."

Huh?

"I don't think you've worn anything but that shirt and those pants since you've got here actually." Rein adds in from the side, her orange bob swaying lightly forward.

"That's right, you may be able to catch doves but women desire more than birdfeed," Yu'yan crosses his arms and nods a few times to himself, "What's say the two of us pay a visit to the bathhouse? It's still early but we'll have time for a night on the town afterwards!" He grabs you by an arm.

In's still the mid-afternoon right now, none of the classes have taken quite as long as the first. Perhaps it's standard here, but Masoch always seems to want to rush through the lessons.

"Visit the bathhouse and change back into his dirty linens? Let's get him something to wear first, he just got his allowance afterall." Rein grabs you by the other arm.

"There's something I've been wanting to read and the archives didn't have it, so if you're going to the bathhouses I'll meet the three of you there later." Leona waves goodbye to the three of you.

You'll have to meet up with Yu'yen later anyways, but you could stand to save some money right now and you don't NEED another outfit, especially when such a large book selection is open to you. You also recall that you need to catch up with Anlak to ask about the slave pools...

We got a rank in cunning, that's sweet.

"I guess I do need new clothes." You look down at your outfit. When you left Ridaela, you packed very little. A map, your journal, two changes and some food. Unfortunately, the journey to Deneb was rougher than you expected and by the time you arrived the wilderness had already ruined some of your wear and you finished your last haunch of meat just before the gate.

"Great then." Rein smiles at you, "C'mon Leona, we're going." She turns around to call her sister over, but Leona had already left.

"Well, I guess it's just you and me then." Rein turns back at you looking a bit less excited. Yu'yen said his byes and went departs, telling you where the bathhouse was before going. No idea why he'd want to arrive there how many hours before you catch up with him, but you've quickly come to stop asking about his habits.

Although you and Rein have had some pleasant conversation before, this is the first time you've actually been alone with her. The Belgran girl was about your age with orange hair in a bob, not short enough that you could mistake her for a man, but a sharp contrast to her more effeminate sister. Her blue eyes peeked around the room as the two of you departed the archives, she seemed sociable enough most of the time, and always started all of your conversations, but she seemed awfully meek now that neither Yu'yen or Leona were keeping you company.

It's a warmer afternoon in Deneb today than any in the last week, and the attitude of the people matched up. A few more are out and about compared to when you were here on your field trip a week back, and once in awhile someone who recognized you said a brief hello before going back to their business.

You still weren't quite used to the city, but it was easy enough to navigate back to the square. Although she started out in front of you when leading you out of the archives, she began to follow your lead once you actually entered the city. At the square, the two of you stop.

"So... where're we going?" You say.

"I was um, following you." Rein answers.

There's a fair silence as the two of you stand there, waiting for the other to take the lead.

"We were, going to get clothes... right?" You ask.

"Well, I don't know where they sell clothes here."

The second silence is even longer, but Rein eventually breaks it, "Hey, I know! How about we go... that way, and we'll enter the first place we see that sells clothes?"

You look down the way she pointed, and it's back the way you came. You do remember seeing a shop there that seemed to sell some functional but even to your untrained senses, bland outfits, but it might not be a bad chance to explore more of the city and check out your other options.

>Lead Rein back to the shop the way you came from

Bland clothes are usually the later, but proper clothes have pockets and venues for adjustments/additions.

>>
Well, you can always stop by the first place if you don't find anything better.

"Let's go further out the city, we already went that way." You tell Rein, pointing to the opposite exit to the square. She looks over to where you pointed to, then back to where you came from, and quietly nods.

As the two of you exit the square, she punches you lightly in the shoulder, "Just so you're aware, I was just making a joke earlier about going that way."

The stores are packed closer on this side of Deneb, and it looks as though it won't take long to find yourself some options. A few stand owners try to call you over to check their wares, but with your thin pockets you can't afford to just be looking at things and keep your eyes focused forward. Rein on the other hand keeps pulling her gaze to all the wares, for someone either training to become a rogue or studying to become a librarian, she seems a bit too easily distracted to be suited for either.

You notice the alleyway leading to Nitt's awfully convenient bookstore and mention it to the girl, suggesting that her more literature inclined sister might be interested in it, but she just nods half-listening while scanning the store fronts with her eyes. If she's trying to hide her interest, she's doing a poor job of it. Perhaps you could visit Nitt until she satisfies herself.

Rein will probably take Leona out later if she's so taken in by anything these shop fronts and Nitt won't want to see your face unless you're bringing in business to him, and right now the thirty-eight pieces of business are committed to a new outfit. You and Rein continue.

After walking just a little further, you come across a store that looks to have decent enough outfits at reasonable enough prices. The two of you enter, you push the door open and let her walk in first, Carna had taught you always do that for ladies.

You don't know anything about what's in style, but you do know that any pants you wear need a minimal of two pockets and while your shirt only needs to keep you warm against the weather, any jacket that can't hold a book against the inner pocket is trash. You begin to look around. The shopkeeper at the back idly watches you.

You find a pair of pants that don't look like they'll tear if you bump into the wrong tree, and a wool shirt fit for the cold of Deneb. Now you just need a jacket that fits your rules and you're good to go. Before you go about picking that out though, it seems Rein has already decided for you.

"Look at this! Isn't it nice? It has these cute buttons and the colour will look so nice on you!" She pulls up a dark jacket and turns it around to show it to you. It looks comfortable and warm, but there's one major problem...

The pockets, not one of them is nearly large enough! She looks so happy though.

>CONT
>>
>>31170848
oh hell no.

>I need something a little more... pocket-y.
>>
You have never been good at saying no to girls, Carna instilled a fear in you at a very young age. Never the less, the idea of having to carry your books in an unwieldy bag; or worse yet, to carry them under your arms is awful!

You turn your head away to get a view at the other selections, but every direction you try to look to, Rein intercepts with nimble feet holding her choice in front of your face. She seems determined to make you buy this. You didn't think of her as very girly, Belgrand is famous for hardy warrior women after-all, but perhaps that hardy reputation is the reason she's pushing so hard.

It doesn't look like there's any difference on the price of the outfits, you'll be spending six of your coins between the shirt and the pants and another six on the jacket regardless of what you pick, so it might just be better to let the girl have her way...

But again, pockets. If jackets were men, the strength of their cloth would be the strength of their bodies and the depths of their pockets would be the depths of their mind. That being said, you're sure she'd take offence if you turned her down.

>Let Rein have her way, buy the stupid jacket

You slip away from Rein's entrapment and slip over to the other jackets, finding a similar looking one. With bigger pockets.

"Hey look Rein, don't you think this one is a little nicer? The colour is about the same, but there're the buttons have little..." You look at the the buttons on the jacket, they have little wavy lines edged into them, "Seas... on them?"

Rein peeks over at your choice and squints her eyes to get a better look at them, then hangs up the jacket she was so infatuated with a moment ago back on the racks. She nudges you lightly, "Didn't take you to be so attentive to the little details, my opinion of you is getting better."

Crisis averted. You can have your pockets yet. There're few things you're so stubborn about, but you will not budge on the topic of pockets.

You take the clothes over to the shopkeeper and hand over your coins. As you count up your remaining ras, you see Rein walk over with several different pieces of fashion and buy them. The coins she hand over easily twice outnumber that in your pouch, it hurts a little to watch them vanish.

"Ah, don't worry, I won't be wearing them on the way out." She says as she stuffs the clothes away in a bag before making her way over to you.

Finding something to wear took far less time than you initially expected, it wouldn't do well to keep Yu'yen waiting but you're sure he won't be upset if you take a little bit longer. Any further out the city and you'll soon be reaching the gates, you make way back towards the square.

Rein holds her new purchases close to her chest, she looks excited to have them. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem like the experience made the two of you much closer, and the conversation is as empty as it was on your way over. The mood is a fair bit better though and you'd do well to make some conversation.

This seems like a good way of doing things.

Just asking about her sister and ignoring her would be terribly rude, but I don't think Rein would take it badly if part of asking about her involves asking about her sister as well.

Not to imply that they're joined at the hip, of course, but that it's terribly unlikely that they're both here independently by sheer chance.
>>
Rein is one of your better friends here you like to think, but you barely know anything about her. You ask her more about herself.

"Me? Hm... well, it's kind of hard to find stuff to talk about when people put you on the spot like that, let's see. Me and Leona were born near the capital of Belgrand, I've never really traveled much until we set out here, but we came on the back of pegasi most the way here."

Belgrand is famous as the only place on Rascha where pegasi are native, winged horses that are said to only let women ride them. It was largely because of them that the female gender became so prominent in the land of snow here travel is difficult.

"I'm mostly here because Leona decided she wanted to come, this whole business with books and backstabbing isn't really an interest of mine but I suppose it's better than tending to pegasi all day."

You've heard some girls back in Ridaela talk about how much they'd love to work with pegasi, but the tone Rein uses paints them as just horses where you have to clean up the feathers as well.

As you continue walking back, your eyes catch a curious sight.

>CONT
>>
In between the corners of two buildings, you just barely see three small bodies. Two of them standing, one on the ground trying to protect himself. They're a fair ways in the alley, but even in these times where few children are born, it seems much more likely that it's a couple of kids than a gang of men who don't drink enough milk.

You pause for a moment to get a better look. The child on the back is covering his ears while the two other kids throw rocks at him. It doesn't look as if anyone else is noticing this but you, or at the very least, it doesn't look as if anyone else cares.

Bullies. Carna and you were the only children in your village, but you'd been picked on a bit when you were first taken in by Ridaela. It never stung at you too much, there were far worse things than some sticks and stones and you'd experienced them first hand; but you could've done without having to bandage up your bumps when you returned home.

When adults stepped in though, it never did much to make the situation any better. The children would just return the next day, and if they couldn't hit you then they'd strike with words. Leaving it alone might be better, but...

"Hey, stop that." You say as you approach the kids. Two boys, snot-faced and hardly half your height. They turn to face you, take a peek at each other and... lob rocks at your face.

You make to nimbly avoid the stones, and easily dodge the first one thrown with a twist of your body.

The second kid, the clever bastard delays his throw and knocks you in the face with one. All that time spent reading has not done well for your reactions.

It's pretty embarrassing, as you get up the children throw more stones at you. You'd like to give them a talk, but the barrage of rocks makes it pretty difficult to get a word in. Your wonder at how many of these they pocketed is quickly knocked out of your head when a rock collides. Thank god Rein isn't seeing this.

The rocks stop before you reach a concussion, looking up you see the two brats floating in mid-air with their legs dangling about. The necks of their shirts being lifted by a familiar face.

Black bangs hanging out the front of her hood and sharp green eyes that could cut daggers in someone, Sheryl stares the kids she's restraining, she's not that much taller than them, but well enough that they can't touch their toes to the ground. She drops the two boys on their behinds, and they scurry out of the alley. Ignoring you, she goes to check on the child they were harassing.

"It's okay now, they ran away." She tenderly says to the remaining child. The boy opens his eyes and peeks around before slowly lifting himself up. There're a few scrapes on his body, but honestly he likely looks better than you do right now. Blonde hair a little out of place, brown eyes wet with tears.

Although he seems fine, he doesn't take his hands off his ears and just shyly covers them. Sheryl gives him a smile and touches her palms to the back on his hands and slowly removes them from his ears, you now know why he kept them hidden.

As his hands come off, his ears flap up. Long, thin and pointed like knives. You've seen a few children like this before, and their treatment has always been the same as the case right now, elves.

Although demons cannot breed with the likes of men, the children of Contractors who sell their souls to demons often come out like this. The knife ears are the most telling trait of someone sired by Contractors, and you can only tell this boy is lucky that he doesn't look worse than this. Some of them come out with devilish tails, bone-like wings, arms with bleeding flesh and razored claws.

"Where're your parents?" Sheryl asks.

Silently, the boy leads to the end of the alleyway and points up in the direction of The Archives.

Sheryl walks to the end of the alley with him and kneels down to meet his gaze, "Do you want me to take you to him?"

It's a bit of a surprise she asked, the other day Yu'yen had asked you who you thought was the more aloof between her and Anlak and admittedly, it was hard to find an answer.

"You really ought to get yourself looked over, and anyways, I don't know how I'd look dragging a child around." Sheryl's gaze shifts down and right, you don't know how much better it'd be if you joined them with your somewhat battered face, but a young women perpetually hooded dragging along a young elven boy is something people are sure to gossip about.

You're not feeling that bad though, and Yu'yen is still waiting for you, and Rein won't be happy since you'd already somewhat inadvertently left her.

Yeah, you'd only make things worse if you went with her. Yu'yen and Rein are waiting.

"I think I'll cause you more trouble than not if I come along, tell me how it is later alright?" You wave goodbye to Sheryl and turn to head to where you meant to meet the others. She doesn't wave back, only nodding once.

You make your way out of the alley back the way you came. Rein was still moving when you went to help the child, and it seems she's long gone from this street. You make way to the square, and then from there to the bath house where the others await you.

>CONT
>>
When you get back to the bathhouse, Leona, Rein and Yu'yen are waiting. Rein seems pretty annoyed at first, but her attitude changes when she sees the battering on your face. When you explain what happened, the reactions are all over the place. Leona keeps peeking all over asking repeatedly if you're alright despite your insistence that you're fine; Rein can't seem to hold back your laughter, telling you that it serves you right to get beaten by a couple kids; Yu'yen doesn't have any interest in the the elf on the bullies and instead asks you more about Sheryl. You don't bother responding to him, and instead go to wash up, he pursues you with his feet and his questions.

Through a small curtain you enter the change room, Yu'yen tells you that bath services are paid for by The Seekers. Who knows how the owner of this place knows who's who, but you're happy to save some coin.

"You excited friend?" Yu'yen says as he takes his shirt off.

"To enter a bath full of men? No, you?"

"Of course not! But just think, a room away from ours nubile young women bathe."

"And?"

"There may be walls in-between, but the Lunese have an ancient tradition to always indulge in espionage when indulging in the baths."

You ignore Yu'yen, you're not even going to think of trying this. You go to enter the bath, get washed, and quickly exit.

>CONT
>>
To Yu'yen's disappointment, the waters are kept in doors and the walls go from the floor to the ceiling. He dramatically sobs when he sees this, wrapping an arm around your shoulder. You like his style, but he's getting a little too familiar.

Everyone else here is a fair bit older than you and Yu'yen as he points out to the chagrin of some of the other bathers. You pick up a bucket and use it to wash yourself quickly before entering the bath, the waters are warm. You can hear Yu'yen pawing at the walls, occasionally yelling to ask you if you found a way to the other side. You don't have any intention of making an idiot of yourself.

When he finally tires out and gives up, he hops in beside you, splashing water all around. Blech.

"Aaah, this is great. I always have to bathe in cold water." Yu'yen says, sinking further into the bath.

There's a certain awkwardness in bathing silently beside him, like with Rein, your conversations with Yu'yen usually begin on his end but now might be a nice time to talk about something you're interested in.

You look over to Yu'yen who has submerged himself in the water. For a guy so interested in women, he doesn't seem to have any qualms about taking in water filled with men. You push down on the top of his head to get attention, and when you release he pops out like a mole.

"What was that for!?" Water drips down Yu'yens dark hair, he coughs up more of us.

Over the last week you've learned that being straight with him works best, "Hey, where'd you come from anyways?" The Lunese people didn't have an empire, it'd vanished when Rascha took it over some five hundred years ago, so when you meet a Lunese they could be from anywhere.

"Ah. I'm the prince of House Yu."

Ah, of course.

The two of you continue warming up in the waters together for some time before you realize how completely ridiculous that is.

"There isn't a House Yu." You say staring at the light on the ceiling.

"Sure there is, I'm the prince."

"You're not a prince."

"Yeah I am, first son and everything."

He doesn't seem to be joking, you look over to him quizically, he looks over to you and smiles.

"Should I explain more?"

>CONT
>>
"You should already know this, but Raschan Kingdom took the Lunese Empire during The Vanishing Age. When that happened, the nobility was mostly exterminated and the commoners were spread all across Rascha in order to weaken the population," Yu'yan starts, "My several greats-grandfather survived by selling out some of the other houses and was allowed to escape with a portion of his wealth. Took to trade selling his heritage to start. Basically, my family has tenaciously continued his legacy of cowardice and shrewd dealings in order to survive to present day, and I am the several greats-grandson, thus; prince of House Yu."

After that explanation, Yu'yen is not any more of a prince in your mind than he was before it. You ask him, "If you're prince to some trade lineage, why join The Seekers?"

Yu'yen brushes back his hair and turns his stare to the ceiling, "I didn't care much for the family business. You know, the Lunese Empire was once the greatest on Rascha; but it's long since vanished. Most of the information on it ever existing is lost with The Vanishing Ages, and The Shepherd's Church dislikes talking about it. I figure, join The Seekers; find some ancient text; discover the origins of my people. Simple, ain't it?"

It seems there's more to Yu'yen than just being some horny clown.

"And while I'm out there, I can spread my seeds, secure some heirs and hopefully find a wife worthy of continuing the line." Yu'yen speaks passionately.

Okay, maybe not.

After you finish bathing, you change into your new winter outfit. You feel much better now than you have for awhile.

You and Yu'yen wait awhile talking more about his history while waiting for Leona and Rein, when they return from their baths changed some of Rein's new wardrobe, the four of you go to make way back to the dorms.

Out on the streets, Rein suddenly has a revelation that she shares with your group, "Ah! Mr Masoch said that there's no food being served in the dorms, we need to get dinner!"

"How about we pick up some food and the two of us will cook something up for everyone?" Leona clasps her hands together in front of herself.

"Aaah... you go back and arrange the clothes I bought, I'll pick up the food and prepare dinner alright?" Rein responds with a... look on her face.

"Never trust a Belgran women's cooking, I'm going to go find myself some ladies of the night and dine with them." Yu'yan begins strolling off without adding anything more.

Although both racist and sexist, Belgrand is a region of little to eat and most of their famous dishes are "Salted Bear" and "Bear's Blood-soaked Potato". There is a certain logic in Yu'yan's terrible statement. It looks like Yu'yan isn't interested in company but perhaps you could get to know the city better by eating out alone.

We're compromising because I don't know how to handle this.

You don't know much about cooking, but you know that they don't serve much in the way of bear meat in the Raschan Kingdom.

"I'll help you with the food to make up for earlier." You tell Rein.

"Alright, I'll meet you at the dorms then." Leona takes the bag Rein brought and begins to head... in the complete opposite direction of the dorms. Both of these sisters, it's a wonder they managed to find their way to Deneb.

You stop Leona by stepping in front of her, "How about you come along with us and I'll walk both of you back later?"

You can see Rein making X's with her arms behind Leona who nods to your suggestion, when she turns around to face Rein, Rein just puts up a smile and says, "Sure... the more the merrier."

You remember several places that sell ingredients on the walk to get new clothes, the three of you head there together.

It hasn't been that long, but the market is already a fair bit quieter with the sun having set while you were in the baths. Ridaela where you lived was awake at all hours, but Deneb seems to be an early sleeper.

One of the medium streets attached to the large road out of the city had the smell of fresh cooking coming off of it, and you navigate the sisters there.

"Ah, it smells so good in this city. And it's warm too, Belgrand has nothing but frozen noses and frozen skies." Leona says, wrapping her fingers over each other as she breaths in the atmosphere. Her braid sways from side to side as she walks, perhaps some of that wait in the bathhouse was for her to finish redoing it.

"Don't get too distracted okay? Make sure you hold my hand." Rein tells her sister, taking Leona's layered hands away from each other and keeping a good grip on it.

You smile seeing this, your home village was small but it was easy to get separated in the crowds when the market gathered, and you'd spend hours holding hands with Carna while she led you between stalls.

It didn't seem that Rein needed help picking things out at all, every time she picks out a piece of meat you can see her eyes scanning it up and down. The merchants occasionally commend her on finding their best cuts. With vegetables, she always homes in one out of the bunch, and comments to Leona on how fresh they are.

Leona on the other hand keeps hovering over to random stalls, only being brought back when Rein tugs on her.

"Hey Rein, let's try those sticks over there! I've never had lizard before."

"No Leona."

"I read once in a book that you can make a stew out of turtles."

"No Leona."

"Look Rein! They're selling Seven's Fungus over there. We can't get those in Belgrand, if you cut them right they're not even poisonous!"

"No Leona."

You're beginning to understand why Rein was so intent on keeping Leona from coming here.

The three of you pick out what you need for dinner and begin to head back. Perhaps you could continue the conversation from the afternoon.

You'll be in the same classes for a year, and likely working with each other afterwards. There's no need to pry into their lives yet, for now you should have some fun.

Sneaking away from them for a moment as they Rein kindly pays from the coin purse you're so jealous of, you make way over to one of the stands Leona had been pointing at so that you can at least treat them to something.

Several roasted lizards dipped in whatever sauce they use around here dry under crystal lights. You take three of them and go for your pouch, but the middle-aged merchant sitting there just opens his palm up.

"I usually sell them at two for a coin, but I'll give those to you as a congratulation on landing a date with twins." He slyly winks.

You don't go through the trouble of correcting him, if he asks much more then the sisters might notice what you're doing. You just thank for his charity and make way back over to the girls.

You hold onto the lizard sticks and sneak up behind the sisters, you wait patiently, you're silent, deadly, in need of a good laugh.

"Hey, we finished picking out the fo-" Rein turns to tell you, but she doesn't manage to finish the statement, her body freezes and her eyes widen when she sees the lizard in front of her.

She lets out a scream and drops her bags, backing up into the stand behind her but luckily not so much to knock anything loose.

Leona looks a bit surprised, but doesn't have quite the reaction her sister does. She stares down at the lizard curiously for a second before coming to a decision, leaning forward a bit, she closes her eyes and opens her mouth wide, "Aaa..."

Instinctively you feed her, Carna had conditioned you well and ten years later it seems that you haven't forgotten. Leona clamps her teeth down and begins nibbling on the lizard, you let go of the stick and watch the back half of the lizard wriggle.

"Don't ever do that again!" Rein declares with an angry stomp. She picks up a couple of the bags and begins stomping off. Leona takes the stick out of her mouth for a moment to give you a quick smile before she continues finishing it, she picks up a few more bags and goes to pursue Rein.

You take up the remaining ones, it's clear they left you with the largest load. Rein never stays angry for too long you've noticed, so you can apologize when she cools down later. For now, mission success.

You return to the dorm a little bit behind the sisters, Rein goes straight to the kitchen; thankfully your little joke hasn't turned her off of cooking. Leona just hangs outside of the door leading into the kitchen, hands behind her back waiting for her sister. You could keep her some company, but Rein might not appreciate that.

A growl pops up behind you, you turn around to see Anlak. He pauses for a moment to look at you, his dark skin makes it hard to know for sure, but you swear he blushes. His expression doesn't change though and he continues walking towards the door out of the dorms. You still need to talk to him about those slave pools.

On things you need to talk about though, there's still whatever happened with Sheryl and the kid. She's probably in the dorm right now, she doesn't leave much, even compared to you and the twins.

There're two places Sheryl could be, you're pretty confident she's not walking around town right now. There isn't any actual rule against visiting the dorm halls for the opposite gender, but it seems like an obvious agreement to avoid doing it. You quickly walk into the girl's hall, knock on her door and leave when she doesn't respond. There's a possibility she's just being difficult and you couldn't blame her for that if that was the case.

Other than her room, there's the place you met her that night a week ago. You head towards the library.

Through the gardens and into the archive you go, the same old lady sits there, some days you think that she might just be another magic fixture attached to the room. You're not exactly used to the chairs yet, but roughly understanding them makes it easier to avoid the nausea.

You nod to the lady to acknowledge her and grab a chair, and you prepare yourself for a wild ride. It seems that as long as you think of your destination, the chairs will take you there. During the week Yu'yan and Leona decided to try out some experiments with them, see how far the chairs would take them but it wouldn't budge unless it had to do with books. Leona didn't mind, but Yu'yan was pretty displeased.

The chair sprung into action when you thought of the library, and you also thought that most likely, you'd find Sheryl between the same shelves as last time.

>CONT
>>
As you reach your destination, the chair leans slightly forward and unlike the last few times, you readily catch your feet.

As you expected, Sheryl is here. It seems she's a bit more prepared this time, with her hood securely in place, she peeks over at you without any surprise. It's hard to believe the reliable girl from this afternoon is really her.

"Hey." You say. Anlak at this point will respond to things flatly if you ask him, but it's still a toss-up on whether Sheryl will respond to anything. You're not surprised that she ignores you, flipping through pages of whatever text she's browsing.

Perhaps it'd be best to ask and go back to your business, but you could see if you can get more out of this conversation by easing into it. Sometimes Yu'yan manages to get her to talk by pestering her enough though, you could try his method; she may be more responsive if you're not obviously flirting when you do it.

"You've got a lot of interest in demons don't you?" You say, picking out a book for yourself to browse.

She doesn't reply.

"It's a usual hobby, but I guess we've got that in common." You open the book, 'Demons in Daktori'.

She doesn't reply.

"Most people that study them are looking to kill them, but I don't think that's the case with you."

She shifts her gaze to you, there's a dim glow in her jade eyes. It seems you have her attention with that.

"Is the boy okay?"

"Yeah," She says, "His father works here, so it was on my way. I didn't stay to see their reunion, I just dropped him off."

She's quick to tell it, but it doesn't seem there's much more information to glean from this conversation. Quietly, time passes between the two of you.

"Hey, Rein is cooking dinner. If you've haven't eaten yet you should join us."

She peeks over at you again.

"Think of it as a reward for helping me out today."

Rein is quite surprised when you enter the kitchen with Sheryl, eyeing the two of you suspiciously. Leona waves when she sees you, but quickly hides behind her sister when Sheryl pops up. For how warm they were when you were out today, both of them seem to be a bit uncomfortable with essential strangers.

The two of you sit down to join the sisters, Yu'yen would be jealous to see this but he made his choice to find companionship elsewhere. Rein does kindly serve Sheryl up some food, a simple but sizeable stew and Sheryl does eat it, but the silence in the room is cutting.

You take a bite out of the meal, it's pretty good, not the best you've had but you're certain it's better than salted bear. Still though, a meal tastes better with some conversation.

You decide to break the silence and run through possible topics in your head, unfortunately most of your knowledge of women ties in with the bloody history of the continent, and you're fairly confident that no one other than Leona would have any interest in a conversation about the controversial sexuality of The Murder Princess.

Judging by the ever-present hood, it seems unlikely Sheryl would be interested in fashions. You know Rein doesn't like to read, and you're not confident Sheryl actually enjoys going through demon-related literature. You've already decided not to gossip about Yu'yan and you're pretty certain Leona sweet as she is would be left out even if Sheryl responds...

A memory pops into your head, there was something that Carna never got tired of talking about.

"Ponies."

Rein and Leona look at you oddly, Sheryl takes more bites out of her food.

"I mean, pegasi. You were telling me today about them right Rein? Could I hear more?" You're pretty awkward right now, but it can't be worse than leaving things silent.

"Yeah, we've got flocks of them back in Belgrand. Wings out twice the size of this table, the feathers leave a real mess." Rein says, Leona nodding to confirm it.

From the corner of your eyes, you see a little shuffling in Sheryl's hood. It isn't exactly a tell, but you don't have any other ideas right now.

You find questions about pegasi to ask, you already know the answer to some of them but if you can keep Rein talking then you might get somewhere. Leona mostly just nods in agreement, still not comfortable with her aloof classmate. Unfortunately, you run out of questions pretty quickly and the silence returns...

Only to be broken by Sheryl, "Is it true that some have horns?" She asks.

Rein drops her spoon a short distance into her stew, taking a pause before answering, "Yeah, about one in twenty are born with a horn. In nature they usually end up leading their herd, but in the stables they're separated and sold as prized mounts."

Sheryl's hood shuffles some more, "What does the horn feel like?"

Rein smiles and answers the childish question, "It feels like a hoof, but a little smoother."

"What does a hoof feel like?"

Rein takes a moment not quite able to come up with an answer but instead makes a suggestion, "How about we visit a stable? They should have one at the gates."

Sheryl doesn't give any reaction, but you can see her hood shuffling some more as if a small animal were living in it.

Dinner ends without any more progress, but you'll take what you can get. Rein cleans up, smiling as she takes away the plates. Leona hadn't said a thing, but she's not hiding behind anyone any more so that's progress. Sheryl leaves as quietly as she entered.

Neither Yu'yen nor Anlak have returned yet, you decide to retire before them.

>CONT

In your room you lay about for awhile, recalling the events of the day. You bought some clothes, hit the showers, helped with groceries, and got to know everybody a little bit better, well; everybody who isn't Anlak.

Picking up a book, you do some quiet reading before you go to bed. As a child your father always pushed books on you, telling you that all great leaders were well-read, you never thought the mayor of a small village was particularly great and you never really cared for his urging. It was Carna that got your interest in reading started, some of your best memories were when she was allowed to sleep over and she'd read to you under the sheets until you fell asleep. Maybe your father put up with her trouble just because he knew she was the only one who could get you to sit down like that.

You hear Yu'yen stumble back into his room, and then the heavy thump of him hitting his bed after a night out. You can leave Rein to tell him that he missed a dinner with Sheryl.

Even later, you hear Anlak's door creak open on the opposite side. Rather than the soft shuffling of sheets through these thin walls, you catch the sound of his chair moving. Who knows why he's still up at this hour, but you can't quite judge him.

Setting the book down and blowing a candle out, you quietly pass into sleep.

And so life goes on.

My schedule is hectic this week and the next but I'll update the Twitter if I find a good day to run. If this quest survives past the two weeks, I'll aim to start earlier in the future, right now I'm aiming for about the same time Wednesday.

A few things that aren't spoilers or anything that I just wanted to say but I'll keep hidden in case anyone wants to just experience it; the relationship between the protagonist and Carna is supposed to be close but ambiguous enough to be defined by decisions on his backstory. I'm not trying to run a waifu quest and friendship is a bigger deal, although I'm fully expecting things to go waifu eventually.

It's just a small thing, but, you could use a more interesting image for the OP.

I've been thinking the exact same thing actually. I tried a few things like texturing the background but it made it harder to edit so I'm working it out.

It was a dead twitter I had around to follow Puzzle and Dragons news but I'll start using it from now on. Glad Twitter lets you change things without making a new account.

You could just use something completely different, like a picture of a library, and post the status screen in the second post.

I like that. I'll search around for some.

You'll want to make it easily recognizable in the thumbnail though.

It's like Yu'yen DOESN'T actually want to get to know Sheryl that well, the way he's going.

OP image is fine with me. I just had some book related images and figured I could contribute. The first library pic you posted definitely won't work since you can't tell what it is from the thumbnail.
