You approach Micheal with care, Monica beside you. Micheal looks over at you, raising an eyebrow and sucking in a breath at the sight of you. He, too, is well-dressed, looking more a man than the mere boy you met.

"Something the matter? You look pensive." he says.

"We have something to discuss." Monica writes.

"Oh?"

"Monica came to me with a proposition that I feel you should be involved in deciding, basically a loophole in your fathers wording to get us to not spend time with you. She proposes we both spend time with you, at the same time, intimately, tonight, I'll accept whatever you decide." you say, letting it all spill out at once. You wish this could all be over. You thought it was - that tonight, you would lay beside him, that you could finally move on. While the King's decision is sound... You're still upset.

"...I'm sorry." he says quietly. "I can't. I... I respect you both so much more for being able to put aside what must be... be some pretty significant differences for this. But Annelin, I can tell that you don't really... like Monica. And you're straighter than even I am. And Monica, I know you don't wish to share me. As honored as I am to recieve such a proposition... I can't. I would be the only one to enjoy such a night. So I can't in good faith accept this."

"I understand." you say, deflating a little. Relief surges through you, and you turn to Monica.

"Okay then." she writes, rubbing her forehead. "Let's" she rewrites, "Let us see Ja'al. It is high time I walked again."

"Wait, really? But he didn't..."

"It wasn't any sort of deal. It was a schedule." she replies, looking quite nervous. "please understand I am not used to this at all" she hastily writes, "but if Micheal and you can manage, who am I to look down on him?"

You lead her back to Ja'al, who is happily talking with Gina, and Monica taps her blackboard for attention. She writes something you can't see, then erases it hastily, then tries again. And again.

This is the first time you've seen her socially flounder like this - totally losing her charm and cool.

Symptoms of sociopathy (taken from mayoclinic because I'm not an actual doctor so this is the best I can do for this argument)
>Disregard for right and wrong
>Persistent lying or deceit to exploit others
>Using charm or wit to manipulate others for personal gain or for sheer personal pleasure
>Intense egocentrism, sense of superiority and exhibitionism
>Repeatedly violating the rights of others by the use of intimidation, dishonesty and misrepresentation
>Child abuse or neglect
>Hostility, significant irritability, agitation, impulsiveness, aggression or violence
>Lack of empathy for others and lack of remorse about harming others
>Unnecessary risk-taking or dangerous behaviors
>Poor or abusive relationships
>Irresponsible work behavior
>Failure to learn from the negative consequences of behavior

Now, some of these we don't know, like her childhood and her work habits. But Monica does check most of these boxes, especially the first 5
>>
>>31184497
if i remember well, the only girl we had the possibility to try with was monica, the few times gina made advances to us we just had to chose how badly we rejected her
oh well, not that it matters anyway
>>
>>31184498
>because it gives you a convenient excuse to just ignore her while acting like the better person.
That's half true. Without a doubt I do think Annelin's the better person, but that's because she's shown that to be the case. That said, I've never argued for ignoring Monica (you don't turn your back on a pit viper, right?), just not for trying to sleep with her or extending any trust in her beyond the expectation that she will, at the end of the day, act in her best interest. Now, that might mean she makes a noble sacrifice to please Michael through some simple or convoluted logic of hers, or that could mean she tries having us assassinated during this trip (doubtful since truth telling magic is probably a thing).

Tl;dr At the end of the day I expect her character to remain consistent, not for her to do the right thing.
>>
>>31184497
Avalon rejected Gina's advances.
>>
>>31184575
You're just... really retarded.

Especially since her lying isn't persistent, she's not that egocentric, and honestly you're just stirring up shit for no reason.
>>
>>31184618
But the whole point of her character is a racist that grows out of it you stupid fuck.

Your interpretation is garbage and dragging the whole quest down, just like with Annelin.

>>31184575
I tick half of those without sleep and four limbs
>>
>>31184638
different guy, and not going to argue about her lying being a habit. But didn't she admit to us last thread that she's massively egocentric
>>
>>31184619
No, pretty sure we did because it made no sense at the time (or now) and would also basically boil down to us cheating on Michael even though we weren't particularly close at that point. (That second justification still makes no sense to me, by the way, but I'm pretty sure someone made it since I remember it ticking me off)
>>
>>31184638
I'm thinking you should take a step back and actually start rereading Monica's characterization and actions from the beginning. I think you might be a little caught up in the "she sacrificed her leg to save Michael!" bit and ignoring a lot of really negative behavior on her part. Not just the racism and classism, but start watching how she interacts with people. How she gets the things she wants from them.

"I don't much care anymore. If Micheal accepts you, then I do." she writes. "I apologize deeply for my earlier actions. Old habits..." she writes with care, "die hard."

Ja'al seems pensive, then nods.
"Very well." he says, thinking. "Do you want something realistic?"

The two begin to talk, akwardly but actually communicating, and you turn to Gina.
"So how'd you get back so fast?"

You move with grace over the floor, a safe distance from Rikard. He's wearing black robes with lace over them, silver thread weaved in so it glimmers lightly. It's a good feeling, warm and happy, as you move with him.

"I don't think I've done anything wrong worthy of parable... but so long as it's fine for mixed company."

He chuckles.
"This be no sermon, merely a tale." he says. "Once, there was a great black bird. The first of the birds, with massive black wings, bright green eyes, and a slender beak. Its feathers were soft and warm, and it could fly forever. But it had no legs with which to land. But this did not concern the bird, for it could see whatever it wished simply by flying to some other place." he says, as you step in a steady circle. "The bird was happy, soaring without landing, resting by gliding, flying over endless expanses. But then it met another bird."

You move into a more active song, swinging around and around, and he continues. "This bird had no wings, and feathers of brilliant white. It walked on strong, powerful legs. The two spoke as the black bird circled, but the black bird could not stay - it had to fly. And so it vowed to come again."

He smiles as you draw close. "They met again and again. The white bird spoke of grand tunnels and caves. The black one, of great, yawning vistas of mist and mountain. Every day, at dusk, and at dawn, they spoke until the sun or moon reared itself. And every day, they parted, knowing one may never see the other."

"They grew close, of course. The big black bird wanted to walk with the small white one. The small white one wanted to soar with the black one. And so the black one petitioned her father for assistance."

"Her father was enraged." he says, as you spin. "He forbade the birds from meeting ever again, and warned if they met again, he would rain punishment and curse upon her. But of course, she was young, and foolish, and went on doing so." you pull close, suddenly, making you gasp at the nearness of his features. Looking over his shoulder, you see Monica stumble, falling against Micheal, who helps her up to start again.

Rikard turns your gaze away and speaks further. "So in time they grew to love one another. While they met every dusk and dawn, when her father wasn't looking, they never touched, they only spoke. Then... One dawn, she could not find him. High and low, she searched. In the forest, in the caves. Her wings were battered, her feathers bent, but she looked and looked. She found him then, fast asleep in his nest - but the sun was high."

You spin apart. "'How dare you ignore my commands!' her father howled. 'If you wish to be with him, then so be it. But in the day, your wings and voice will wither, and legs you shall gain. In the night, you shall forever be apart, and you will be deaf to his pleas!'"

"Though she screamed, it grew quiet, and her wings shrank and shriveled. She could not speak to her love, but he understood her nonetheless. And in the night, he could see her soar, and smile at her magnificent wings. And they lived happily ever after." he says, as the song concludes.

"Ah, but did he not allow them to stay together? The first step in Raeve's way is to forgive yourself. The second... One very few manage, is to forgive others, even those high above, for their faults."

You nod. "Stand strong, Annelin. Raeve is proud of you." he slips away, just as Monica concludes her dance. You see them close together for a moment, her resting her head on his chest, then they part. Monica seems... not pleased, but resigned as she approaches you.

"The leg works wonderfully. And to think I was fool enough to trust some blacksmith off the street for this." she wipes and rewrites with a slight smile. "I feel I've been a fool for some time."

Nevermind, misread "he slips away" as something to the effect of he softly said.

I wonder why Rikard ran from Monica's presence. I'm thinking we shouldn't take her to Raev's church (slim chance of that happening anyway) in case Rikki and Raev are still bending the rules.

Before long, space is cleared for you, and you stop worrying about betrayal. You stop worrying about Micheal. You just stop fearing every shadow, and in that moment... You move with such ease that you shock yourself, silver lines along your arms and collarbones shining bright.

You both stop, panting.

"Point~" you say, then you fish the wooden dagger from your cleavage. "for both of us, I suppose." you grumble, as he grins and rises again, hopping from toe to toe. You circle, slowly...

Even ground. Fair distance. Equally armed and armored... No strange terrain, low lighting. Your heart is racing, and you smile at him as he grins back.

[Roll eschewed - auto-crit.]

You grin as you dash back, letting Micheal sprint close - and things slow down as you bite on your tongue, hard. Pain focuses your mind instantly, red thumping taking over as things seem to slow down. The shaft of your weapon sweeps out Micheal's legs from under him, and your good pushes his chest down as you level your spear to his neck.

And then something very strange happens.

The world splits.

In one world, an instant of pain, a moment of fear, and then, peace in black wings.

In this one, silvery energy pushes you forward, the wooden spear digging into the ground at the side of Micheal's neck. A flurry of apologies rises when you hear something sing by, and you feel a tug at your hair as some of it falls to the ground. Your eyes widen as you look to the guardsman who is running forward, holding a crossbow.
"I'm sorry, I just, I saw, It was dark, and, I, oh Law, are you okay?!"

wait did we just get shot in the face?
>>
>>31191170
Nah, he's just a guard. This isn't that surprising considering the heightened security and the fact that this Parton the castle is supposed to be empty at the moment.
>>
>>31191073
>And where did the guard come from?
We sort of walked outside from a party that's supposed to be invite only. With a whole bunch of higher-ups on the guest list. Without telling anyone we're going out.

Guardsman's on duty and sees somebody about to spear someone on the ground in the neck with no other context, they're bound to get a little jumpy.

>>31191085
Raev doing some sort of fate manipulation shenanigans.

The guardsman could've killed us by shooting first and asking questions later (as implied by the glimpse of the first 'branch') but we got nudged out of the way with a bit of divine intervention so it only clipped us instead.

Not unreasonable that people are confused, since this whole incident pretty much just came out of left field.
>>
>>31191036
Oh fuck you AG. You just made us lose that banked 1-up from our first meeting with Raev in a fucking spar, didn't you
>>
>>31191199
Back of the neck, then Raev uncover that fate and said it happened another way.
>>
>>31191183
That's ridiculously shitty.

Goddamnit Avalon do you not learn?
>>
>>31191245
>>31191218
Whoa, whoa, easy. Let's take a second and figure out what's what, here.
>>
>>31191218
>>31191183
Avalon, please tell me this isn't what happened. Because that's a real dick move, and isn't going to help the recent shitposting problem
>>
>>31191036
Wait, did Michael get I hit in on us before we swept his legs? Dd we upgrade Bloodmind at some point to be able to avoid taking that first hit?
>>
>>31191216
Eh, I guess I just doubt the ability of a guardsman to accurately headshot us in the dark.
>>
>>31191036
"Good job on missing when it matters!"
>>
>>31191113
Yeah that's the best dialogue line.

Hell, compliment his marksmanship because he very nearly had us.
>>
>>31191261
Oh he wasn't aiming for us. Good thing we knocked Michael to the ground when we did.
>>
>>31191218
Avalon, is this what happened? And if so, do you mind me asking why-seems a little fucked up to kill us because we used an ability we've had since session one to win a spar
>>
>>31191297
What, you think it was a foiled assassination attempt?

But even if that was the case, it still wouldn't have hit us in the head.

Hell, headshotting someone takes deliberation and precision aiming, or this guy is the best marksman in all the land.
>>
>>31191170
There's no reason NOT to do this regardless, at least now that they've seemed to recognize us. We've had enough incidents like this lately that just going "yeah, makes sense that it's a guardsman" is stupid, even if it makes perfect sense.

We've had more high-profile infiltrators in more well-secured places. Can't be too careful.
>>
>>31191036
Publicly say a prayer of thanks to Raev for saving our ass, then do >>31191113 and help Michael up. Brush ourselves off and head back to the party.
>>
>>31191036
Just to clear up the whining, did we just lose that banked life?
>>
You didn't lose the extra chance. That was a freebie, to illustrate how it works.

"I'm fine, you were just doing your job." you say, helping Micheal up.

"Seems I might need some help still..." he says with a sigh, as you Eye the Guard.

"Well, so long as these fine men remain so vigilant, there shouldn't be many issues." you pat the guard on the shoulder, and he relaxes. "Back to the party." you say, brushing him off and smiling. "You go back first."

You wait for him to return to the party, then go back yourself, stretching. You're feeling much better now - between that dance and that spar, you feel much better. When you enter, the gift-giving has barely begun - Micheal recieved a silvery cloak from Rikard, and is moving on to the gift from his father.

A mid-length blade, beautifully ornate, and a buckler. Both with amazing engravings, beautiful work.

"There is a part of each of those from every Central Continent race. They were paid double." his Father states.

He reaches for what you recognize to be your gift.

>Call out.
>Let him open it.
>>
>>31191423
retcon, don't head back to the party. It's time for Mike to be a Prince on the run
>>
>>31191423
>Let him open it.
Fuck it, after the last scene I trust Raev.
>>
>>31191423
>Let him open it.
>>
>>31191423
>Let him open it.
>>
>>31191423
AG, no disrespect, but the information you just put in that spoiler really needed to be incorporated into the last post. When you're demonstrating or introducing a new mechanic you need to tell people what you're doing and why, otherwise it's just confusion and lashing out.

Thank you.
>>
Let him open it. Let the randomness begin. Clowne and Raev with both be pleased.

And add the boon of survival to her character sheet in more detail, so we know.
>>
>>31191523
All the same, to immediately assume the worst of AG and lash out is kinda scummy. Unless he outright says we lost or gained something mechanically, it's pretty safe to assume that it was just narrative.
>>
>>31191579
I'm not disputing that, I'm just not used to Gods giving out favors for free.
>>
>>31191579
I agree that people yelling and raging was a bit much, but it was the only thing we know of that could rewind death. Now I'm just worried about what this 'free trial' is going to cost us
>>
>>31191626
Does it count as free when we sold her our soul?
>>
>>31191579
The thing is, mechanics are local, narrative is global. If we can see how things work (the mechanics) then we know that certain effects are contained and that we don't have to worry about broader consequences. If AG had written "Raev intervene's" into the post at the appropriate time and he'd ended the post with "[1 Raev Intervention remaining]" or anything to that effect, that would have taken just about all the guessing and confusion out of it. But if you don't make those mechanical notes around the narrative structure, then we're trying and grasping at straws to see what the long term consequences of the encounter are.

Yes I understand you not wanting to show all the nuts and bolts to us players, but we need to know what's going on. It isn't so much a trust thing as a communication thing.

Anyway, I'm glad this is settled and apologize for the interruption, just felt I needed to air that before I completely pass out. Take it easy /tg/, try to get into more fun than trouble, or at least trouble that's mostly fun.
>>
>>31191794
Hey, I'll have you know at least 5% of our soul is currently in the Wrath Demon King/Chief/Lordguy's possession! So she didn't get all of it.
>>
>>31191905
In order to free our soul from the secret evil of Raev, we need to get our hand's soul back
>>
You let him open it, flushing as he states what it is. There's some laughter, though it's good-natured laughter, and he takes it in stride, promising that his marriage, no matter to whom, will be a happy one in /at least one/ respect.

The rest of the gifts are simple things - small gestures of affection, like handmade clothing, tools, and small trinkets. Of the greatest note is a simple ring from Ja'al, an iron band. The two of them share a look, then a mad grin, and they hug tightly.

"With that, the prince must ere to bed, as must us all." he says, eyeing you in particular with Monica. Both of you look away from him in a huff.

You lay in bed, staring up at the ceiling, and there's a knock at your door. Opening it, Ja'al looks up at you.

"So." he says, "We have to speak."

>Writein
>>
>>31192076
"sure, get in"
>>
>>31192076
"Of course. What's the matter?"
>>
>>31192076
last time someone knocked on our door it was a demon so USE THE EYE pew pew pew.
>>
>>31192076
Eye him then respond "Come in and talk."
>>
>>31192076
"Is here okay, or should we move?"
>>
>>31192076
use the eye, then ask what's up.
>inb4 king Hile's been possessed by a demon
>>
>>31192076
"No kidding."
>>
"Is here alright?"

"Should be." he replies. "So... Both you and Monica have hexed limbs." he says, "And Monica has been having some pretty disturbing dreams since then, according to Micheal. At first I thought it was just trauma, but..." he sighs, "Names mentioned match up with actual demons. Did you share the same?"

>Writein
>>
>>31192222
"No. I had strange dreams before I lost my hand"
>>
>>31192222
"I've had contact with someone named Haru Umda, but not exactly nightmares"
>>
>>31192222
"Yes. Sorry I haven't spoken to you about it...the last few weeks have been a mad blur."

Info drop Ja'al.
>>
>>31192222
haven't we had fucked up dreams since like the first session? Has that just been since we've been in the castle, or our whole life?
>>
>>31192255
Oh that's true, isn't it?
>>
>>31192272
While true, we had a full of conversation with the Lord of Warriors, which is something Ja'al needs to know about.
>>
>>31192286
that's true, but that's the next topic of conversation. Dream-wise, nothings really changed all Quest.
>>
>>31192286
Didn't we already do that? I remember voting repeatedly to.
>>
>>31192255
seconding this
>>31192286
I know we voted to do this the last time we spoke with Ja'al, since he needed to know immediately. He should already know
>>
>>31192222
"Yeah so long story short, the ghost of her leg is in hell, and demons can use it to mess with her dreams."
>>
>>31192222
Didn't we tell Ja'al we spoke to the Lord of Warriors? Like four threads ago?

Other than that, we've had dreams about demons all Quest, so I doubt we'd think it weird
>>
>>31192222
"I've always had my share of dreams, but this did change for the odd once I lost my arm." Also explain about the Lord of Warriors and what he said if we haven't already.
>>
>>31192255
This works. Can someone check the archives to make sure we told Ja'al about the demon who wanted to be summoned? because we should tell him that nowish if we didn't already
>>
>>31192222
use the eye like we voted to last prompt
>>
>>31192487
Seconding telling Ja'al about this. I think we already talked about it, possibly to Ja'al, but we have to be sure.
>>
>>31192546
That could have been a Seducer maybe.

Or maybe none of you remembered to vote for talking to Ja'al but me.
>>
>>31192487
>>31192546
>>31192286
You spend a little time discussing the matter with him.

"Harumda..." he says. "What he says makes some sense. I'll work on summoning his second, the one you were stuck in. If you dream of them tonight, tell them so." he nods, turning to the door. "Oh, uh." he smiles. "Monica was quite polite. If more awkward than myself. And you dance together amazingly. Whatever that issue is in the Tou nation, it'll be solved." he nods, then leaves as you lay back on the bed.

=== END OF THREAD ===

Q/A.

If you have questions to ask, or things that need to be clarified, please ask now.
>>
>>31192656
Why is based Ja'al so based?
>>
>>31192656
So, do we have to take a hit after activating Bloodmind or can we get away with biting our tongue going forwards?
>>
>>31192813
Do keep in mind that making that common will leave you with a fucked up tongue, and that you can bleed a lot from there.
>>
>>31192656
So did everyone see that blessing Raev gave us when dancing with Monica?
>>
>>31192895
That's not a no. And that concerns me.
>>
>>31192656
From here it is skip to trip, right?
How much combat/social/relax are we looking at?
>>
>>31192813
Didn't we design a ring for Michael that he can stab himself with so that we can teleport to his location? Why not make ourselves one for this?
>>
>>31192901
In the original Hat Quest, updates that pleased gods were marked as such with big fuck you [X IS PLEASED] markers. I felt that these were a bit too... much, and so I use the glows to show favour. Each god has a color.

>Law = Gold/white
>Raev = Silver/black
>Coyo = Copper/orange
>Anan = Electrum/green
>Clown = Bronze/purple/rainbow
>>
>>31193020
>Law is white
Godsdamnit Rikkard.
>>
>>31193020
No I meant was that visible to everyone at the party watching us dance, or is the light only seen by the recipient?
>>
>>31193058
The god chooses in most cases - in this case, yes, they could see. Raeve was happy to see you dance and wanted you to shine.
>>
>>31193107
Are we going to have the opportunity to train and learn new skills during this interlude, or is this framed as a straight diplomatic mission?
>>
>>31193107
Is there a template for what gods give as boons, or is it personalized? Karl going superman is the only example available.
>>
>>31193107
So was she happy about us dancing with another women, or being forgiving and trying to put past grievances behind us?
>>
>>31193242
Both, but definitely more of the latter.

>>31193221
Coyo allows you to mess with your memories, mess with the memories of others, screw about with the past of an object, and so on.

Law allows you to negate certain things - imposing "natural law". Magic and the like can be affected. Some Law Priests can stop magical effects simply by observing them. Humansworn can also be created by Law.

Anan grants greater skill and endurance, especially for crafting things and building things.

Raeve can fuck about with fate, along with other things you've seen.

Clown screws with the laws of physics in a given area.
>>
>>31193443
>Coyo is the demon-taming option
>>
>>31193443
Recognizing that it is far beyond the scope of the game, is ascension to god hood feasible?
>>
>>31193594
It happened in the original series, and that method hasn't gone away.
>>
>>31193695
I'll have to do an archive trawl then. Been a while since I stopped by tgchan.
>>
>>31193710
Do keep in mind that this Avalon is very... different. The rules are the same, but that's about it.
>>
>>31193783
Will do. Won't be tonight though, I should've been asleep two hours ago.

Anyway, 'night AG, best of luck to you.
>>
>>31192656
Thanks for the thread Avalon, nice to have a calmer one thats not filled with arguing and crap.

Take care and see you next thread.
>>
>>31194100
>next thread.
Speaking of, any idea when next thread will be? I'm looking forward to bonding with Monica over work and exploring the setting a bit, but can understand if you're burnt out by the last couple threads.
>>
>>31194100
We were not in the same thread, but you're welcome anyway.

Sunday as usual. I have Sunday and Monday off, but the rest of my schedule is "Wake up, eat breakfast, go to work, come home, sleep".
