“So you've mostly been stationed in Europe?” Ice asks Ghost, the witch with your brother.

She nods. “M-Mostly.” She says. “I was at Edwards before.”

You and your brother trail somewhat behind, following the pair as they wind their way towards Regent's park. Though it took some effort- and a not-insignificant amount of help from an older gentleman who seemed more than happy to help four lost Americans find their way around his city, the four of you were able to get here well before sundown.

“Edwards? At the flight test center or....?” Ice trails off, leaving the question open.

“Instructor school.” Ghost responds. “W-working with new strikers.”

“Oh, wow.” Ice says, sounding impressed. “That's not an easy post to get. I tried for it before I got my squadron and got turned down.”

That kind of surprises you- you'd been under the impression that she'd gotten the squadron straight out of the academy. Not getting her first choice of posting must have hurt.

“I-it's not that much. They didn't have many witches to chose from.” the younger witch responds. “A-and I didn't stay long. W-what about you? I've heard your unit is getting new strikers.”

“Already got them.” Ice says, sounding somewhat pleased. “They're designed to work with my steelwings better than older generation sets, and they're next gen stuff.”

“Wyverns?” The smaller witch asks.

Ice pauses. “Yes, how did you know?”

Ghost shrugs. “T-they're the only new units with any kind of improved combined arms ability. The air force is looking at them now too. How are they?”

1/2
>>
Ice shrugs. “Honestly?” Ghost nods.

“They're harsh.” Ice says. “None of us acclimated easily, and even after using them as long as we have, they're still hard on all of us.”

“Oh.” Ghost says, quietly.

“I mean, it's worth it.” Ice hurriedly adds. “They're really capable of some incredible things. It's just, they make you pay for it, I guess.”

“I-it probably doesn't matter. I don't think I'll be changing anytime soon.” Ghost responds, after a moment.

Ice laughs. “Like them that much?”

Ghost nods. “They work for me.” She says, simply.

The four of you walk along in silence for a second before Rex starts. “Oh, I forgot. Here.” He says, digging in his pocket for his wallet and handing you a folded up piece of paper. “Thought you might get a laugh out of that.”

Opening it up, you see what's clearly a bounty notice- with your face on it. You snort at the listed price. “Five hundred thousand rubles?” You ask, trying to sound insulted. “That's what, a quarter of a mil, US?”

Rex shrugs. “Give or take.”

[] write in.

“Man, quarter of a mil for me. Fuckin insulting.” You mutter, loud enough Rex can hear it, but the witches can't. He gives you a thin smile. “Hey, watch this.”

“Hey Ice!” You say, louder. She stops and turns to look at you, then at the paper in your hand. “Check it out, I'm worth something!”

“Wha- oh, ha-ha.” She says, looking at the paperwork, laughing sarcastically. “Not much, though, it looks like. Five hundred thousand rubles isn't a whole lot of money.”

“That one's old.” Rex says. “Pre-Berlin.”

Ghost nods. “I-it's gone up since then.” She says. “I think they were saying it's up to ten million.”

You whistle. “That's more like it.”

“You worried about persec?” Rex says, after a second.

You shake your head. “Nah, This is the first I've heard of it anyway.” You say, accepting the flier back from Ice and holding it out to your brother.

“Keep it.” He says. “I stole a few extras for momentos. I'll have to lift a new one next time.”

“What are you doing that you're able to steal Soviet bounty notices on me?” You ask, laughing.

Rex looks over at you. “Classified.”

You snort. “Oh, I bet. They probably had a phone line ready for me in case they needed top cover anyway.”

“Not that deep in.” Rex says. “You'd be surprised.”

“So would you.” You respond.

“Gentlemen.” Ice says, her voice firmly set to 'hardass commanding officer.' “Could you two maybe not try and out classified information each other in the middle of a major metropolitan area?”

“Sorry.” You both say, after a second. You continue the walk in relative silence.

“H-here we are!” Ghost says a short walk later. “W-we found a nice spot on witch's island, if that's ok?”

You look at ice, then nod, confirming for the both of you. “Sounds great.”

“I-it's a little way in.” She says.

“Is it close to St. John's Lodge?” Ice asks. “I'd like to visit there.”

Ghost nods. “It's on the other side of the r-rose garden from there.” She says.

Ice smiles. “Good. Frank, mind if we take a detour?”

[x] No problem. We'll meet you two in a bit.

You nod. “Sure, no problem. Rex, Ghost? We'll catch you two in a bit.”

Rex nods, and he and Ghost continue along the path to the left while you and Ice start down the one to the right.

As you approach you start to make out the details- it's a massive mansion, the outside stucco painted a very pale pink. The lawns are very well kept- they must have a hell of a team of groundskeepers, you think.

“So this place is pretty important, then?” You ask, belaboring the obvious at this point.

Ice looks back over her shoulder at you before nodding. “Only kind of. You remember the witch house in Washington? The one your parents were staying in?”

“Sure.” you answer, looking up at the building in front of you. Situated in the Regent's Park, just across the traffic circle from the rose gardens, you've got to admit it makes the antebellum mansion on Hains point seem kind of... sad, really. Definitely not the same air about the place, you decide- this is old world money, done up in the neoclassical style.

“This is like that.” She says. “Except you can only really get a room by invitation, or if you're very highly placed. We're just visiting.”

You nod, noting she's summoned her familiar- and the air temperature nearby has dropped a couple degrees.

“Nervous?” You ask.

She hesitates. “Kind of. They still might not let us in, even with me being a witch.” She says.

“I thought hospitality was a big deal between you guys?” You ask, confused.

She nods again, starting up the steps. “It is. But we're in the old countries now. Rank and station count too, and not every witch gets into places like this. The old holds in Paris and Rome are the same way, too. There's other houses for lower class witches.”

1/3
>>
“Except you're not a low class witch, remember? You're royalty.” You point out. “Imperial royalty, at that. Puts you on par with, what, Katsumi and that's it?”

“They don't know that.” She responds. “And I'm not sure I want anyone else knowing it either. And there's been times royalty hasn't been enough either.”

“Damn, no kidding?” You ask, suddenly feeling underdressed. Should have worn your dress uniform, you think.

She nods again. “I can think of a few times, mostly bratty princesses or daughters of the heads of minor states.” She laughs nervously.

“And they'll let me in?” You ask. “I mean, I'm not exactly dressed up.” You brush off your jeans to call attention to them- while they're clean, they're not exactly what you'd call classy.

“You're with me. You'll be fine.” She responds. “Besides, I'm not dressed up either. We're visiting, playing tourist. Not attending a ball or gathering.”

You nod, stepping back a bit when she knocks. You're surprised when the door opens after a very short wait- she must have caught someone nearby.

An older witch steps out, her grey hair drawn up into a bun. She looks at Ice, then at you. “How may I help you?” She asks, not unkindly, but definitely more out of force of habit than any real friendliness.

2/3
>>
Ice pauses, then drops into a curtsy. “I'm Tabatha Kazinski and this is Frank Bishop.” She says, indicating you- you nod towards the older witch in greeting when she looks at you. “We're in London on leave from Castle Barin and would like to visit the house, if that's possible.”

The witch's eyes narrow slightly. “You're Tabatha Kazinski?” She says. “I can't say we expected to see you here, dear, but of course you're more than welcome to tour the grounds. Had we known you were going to be in the city, we would have extended an invitation to you to room here.”

She half-turns to address you. “And Mr. Bishop, we hadn't expected to see you here at all. From the picture Matron Longstreet painted of you, I rather expect Miss Kazinski had trouble bringing you here.”

[x] Matron Longstreet's opinion of me may be coloring her depiction of me ma'am.

You chuckle. “Matron Longstreet's opinion of me may be coloring her depiction of me, ma'am.” You respond.

The older woman nods. “We had expected as much when she stayed here. She's always been a... prickly sort.” She says, her smile gaining an air of genuine friendliness. “Still, she's highly placed and was well within her right to request a room here. She only flew back to the US a few days ago.”

You breathe an internal sigh of releif at that- dealing with her would kill the rest of leave for sure, you think.

She ushers you two inside, closing the door behind you. “Now, Miss Kazinski, is this a social call, or did you want to see the matron of London about something?”

“S-She's here?” Ice practically squeaks.

The older witch smiles and nods. “She's here for the day, yes. She's been quite taken by the stories of your generation's exploits, I'm sure she'd love to meet you.” She says.

“I-I'm not sure, I mean, I'm hardly dressed for-” Ice starts, then stops, looking at you helplessley. “Frank, what do you think? I-I don't know what to say.”

You're about to answer when your hostess speaks up again. “And she's taken to following the stories of your prowess as well, mister Bishop. Meeting the both of you would quite make her day.”

It never hurts to make friends in high places, especially ones that could marginalize Longstreet's influence.

That said, we have prior commitments. I suppose the least we could do is pay our respects, even if we can't stay for long. I'm sure the London matron would understand, even if it means scheduling a "proper" visit at a later time.

[x] Sure, might as well.

You're honestly torn. While you'd hate to stand up Ghost and Rex, this seems like it'd be something Ice wants to do. Well, it is something she wants to do, you can tell, even if she's not sure how to handle it. In the end, you decide, the leave is really for her, not for you- and, as such, maybe you'd better meet this woman while you have the chance.

“We'd be honored.” You say, after thinking for a second. Maybe you can duck out early, go meet Rex and Ghost without Ice? You'll have to try. Why is it all the things happen all at once and you don't have enough time for them all, then you have a bunch of free time with nothing happening? It confuses you sometimes.

The old witch smiles and nods. “This way, please.” She says, indicating that the two of you should follow her.

She leads you upstairs and into one of the two wings, into a room overlooking the park to the north and slightly beyond- you can just barely make out some buildings on the north end of the park from here. The room is well furnished, reminding you, somehow, of the captain's office aboard the saratoga, only... bigger. Nicer, too, really, but mostly for the larger windows and the slightly higher grade furniture. Inside, two older witches sit, chatting away amicably.

They look up when you enter, and both of them give that not-quite-friendly smile you're becoming used to already.

“Lady Dowding, may I present Commander Tabatha Kazinski, United States Navy, and Lieutenant commander Frank Bishop, United States Navy.” Your hostess says.

Her smile becomes more genuine at Tabby's name, and you could almost swear you see happiness when you're introduced. “Splendid!” She says, setting down a cup of tea. “You're just in time for tea.”

“T-Tea?” Ice asks, hesitantly.

“Of course dear. Please, sit. Mary? Please bring up tea for our guests.” She says, indicating a seat and looking at your hostess, who nods once and leaves.

1/3
>>
“So what brings you to our fair city?” Lady Dowding asks, sipping her tea after you and Ice find a pair of nearby chairs.

“L-Leave.” Ice says, after a second. “W-we're at Barin and-” She coughs. “A-And I-”

“She was working herself to death, ma'am.” You say, interrupting Ice, who's rapidly losing her composure.

“Well, that's no good.” Lady Dowding responds with a frown. “I suppose the matrons there aren't giving you much trouble?”

“Well, they're not giving me much trouble personally, no ma'am.” You respond. “But that's because my commander here is running interference.”

She nods. “I see.” She says, simply. “Well, perhaps I should become involved.”

Her companion looks over. “Ye can't be serious.” She says in a Scottish accent. “You've got enough troubles here, to be adding to them.”

“My troubles are my own, thank you.” Lady Dowding responds. “Besides, my father did quite well during the war, and he had a blitz at home to worry about. I've only to manage the crown's witches here on the isles, not fight a war as well. And we both know how younger matrons can be.”

Her friend laughs at that. “Aye, we were younger matrons, once.” She says. “But this still seems unnecessary.”

“Perhaps.” Lady Dowding responds. “Perhaps. Tell me, Commander Kazinski, what would the matrons at Barin think if I let it become known you were given a permanent room here?”

“P-Perm-” Ice stammers.

2/3
>>
“Of course.” She responds. “We’ve a few openings in the north wing, and I'd hoped to be able to find someone to give a room to. Perhaps this would make the issue easier?”

“I- I'd be honored” Ice says, causing Lady Dowding to laugh.

“Dear, we've all been following your squadron. It's rare to see such talent concentrated like that. In fact...” She trails off, and nods, thinking to herself. “In fact, yes. I'll let it become known any member of your squadron is welcome to the lodge at any time.”

“A-Any- but!” Ice looks over at you, panicked.

“We can deal with the specifics of Mister Bishop later, dear.” The older witch says, soothingly. “If You've the time, Perhaps I can show you around personally?”

“I- I.. I'd really-” Ice stammers.

“Mister Bishop, you're more than welcome to come as well, of course.” The Matron says.

Really sorry about that delay guys, puppies were fighting in their cage, so one's in here and one's in the other room. Trying to get them to sleep in separate rooms ain't easy.

[x] Of course.

You smile and nod. “I'd be glad to.” You say. “But I do have to ask a favor. My brother and his friend are on witch's island, and I'd like to send a message down to them, if that's at all possible, just to tell them where we are.”

She nods. “Of course. I'll have Mary send one of the house girls.” She says, standing up. “This way, please.”

She narrates as she walks- the building was originally constructed in 1812, but suffered heavy damage in the 1940s. Rebuilt in the late part of that decade with the original plans, it was heavily modernized, and the north wing was changed into a series of suites, most of which are left furnished and used for visiting matrons or witches of note- war heros and the like. A very few rooms are kept for specific witches, and furnished to their tastes.

“I think we can give you these rooms.” Lady Dowding says, opening up a door into a large, if empty, suite. “If they're to your liking, of course.”

“T-they're-” Ice says, walking into them, looking a bit dizzy.

“They're perfect, ma'am.” You supply for her. She nods.

“Excellent!” Lady Dowding responds. “I'll have it published. I only wish we had enough space to extend the same courtesy to all the people that deserve it.”

She continues to lead you through the house, pointing out various rooms and their functions. She stops when she gets to the Library.

“This is a bit different than you may be used to.” She says, opening the glass doors. “The library here is part of the academy archives. Latley I've taken to keeping the war records here of the witches that flew out of RAF and Royal navy bases during the war.”

You see Ice perk up at that. “A-all of them?” She asks.

Lady Dowding nods. “Of course. Most of them are very limited, just what their home nation sent us.”

“A-anything on I-ilyena Nikolaevna?” Ice asks, shooting you a glance.

Lady Dowding smiles. “I'd wondered if you were going to ask after her. The Wattisham record is on the table over there, already open to the page with her unit.” She says.

[x] Let her go. This is family, and important to her.

You follow her over to the table, electing to stand when she pulls out a chair and sits in front of the book.

“I was at their wedding, you know.” Lady Dowding says. “Attending in place of my father.”

Ice, completely engrossed, doesn't respond. Lady Dowding smiles, nodding.

“Wattisham was odd, for us. American bombers didn't initially fly with witches, and it cost them. Bomber command did only marginally better, back then your all weather day/night fighters didn't exist like they do today.” She says, allowing Ice to just read.

“Her unit was the first and only of it's kind in the United States eight air force. The only joint fighter wing in the whole of the mighty eighth.” She laughs lightly. “Back then, we thought it was a fool's errand for a witch. Bombing missions were too long, you just couldn't ask a witch to stay in the air the entire way. And attaching a fighter to a daylight witch squadron?”

She shakes her head. “We all thought it mad, and a perfect example of men meddling where they shouldn't. Night fighters made sense, night witches are rare. Daylight is different though.”

You let her continue, looking over Ice's shoulder at a futuristic, curved, twin engine fighter with a blended wing-body shape and a flattened out body, almost like someone took a press to a normal fuselage.

“Your grandfather made us rethink that.” She says, laughing. “I'm not sure when he started flying, but by the time we saw him, he belonged in the air just as much as any witch.”

“M-my grandmother w-was-” Ice starts, then halts, looking up. “I-I'm not sure-”

[x] Encourage her. So far Lady Dowding seems like she's on the level.

You nod slightly when she looks at you. She pauses, taking a breath.

“Lady Dowding, my paternal grandmother, Ilyena Nikolaevna was the grand duchess Anastasia Romanov. I'm the last living claimant to the Romanov dynasty.” She says, her voice surprisingly firm and level.

Lady Dowding, for her part, smiles and nods. “We suspected as much. If it's not a bother, how did you come by this information?” She asks. “If it's verified, I rather suspect I've been remiss in not introducing you to the royal family.”

Ice squeaks at that, and buries her face in her hands.

“We're not sure if we want to make it public knowledge, ma'am.” You say, speaking for Ice and putting a hand on her shoulder. “We only just found out the day before we went on leave, and it's from the Matron General of Soviet witches, who brought the information over from the Leningrad academy.”

She nods. “I see. I happen to know that Matron Longstreet is keeping a chest of Ilyena and John Kazinski's personal belongings. She intends to use them as a bargaining tool against Miss Kazinski, to get her to agree to release you and your young witch to her.”

You nod, sadly. “We expected as much. We can't really do anything about it, though. She's a matron.”

1/2
>>
She smiles. It's not a pleasant, kind smile. It's the smile of a predator sighting in on prey that's far, far too easy. It's a shark's smile. “She is woefully out of her league. We'll need the contents of that chest to verify this claim to our own satisfaction, but that shouldn't be hard to get at all.”

“S-so you'll h-help me?” Ice asks, her voice barely holding together.

“Of course, dear.” Lady Dowding says, turning to look at you. “How long is your pass from Barin?”

“One week, ma'am. Six days left.” You say. She smiles.

“Plenty of time. Mister Bishop, you'll have a plane to catch tomorrow. I'll send someone to Uxbridge immediately to gather your things, you'll stay here tonight. I want you to act as my courier on this.” She says.

“But I'm-” You start to protest.

“Mister Bishop, you're exactly what we need.” She says. “In this case, you're exactly what we want, as well. Matron Longstreet's intentions may be good, but her methods are unacceptable in this case. I intend to let her know that. I'll be sending you on a little errand for us with one of my girls to bring back that chest.”

[x] It's for Ice, and it's important to use this while we can. I'm in.

You hesitate- then nod. “I'm in.” You say, simply.

Lady Dowding smiles. “I suspected you would be. I want you to act as a courier. All you need to do is deliver a letter to matron Longstreet. I'll type it up myself. I'll also arrange to have you temporarily assigned to the Royal corps of witches as a guardian for the time being. We can work on making that permanent later, if it suits you.”

“A what?” You ask, confused.

“I'm sure your commander has told you that tradition here is positively ancient.” She says. You nod.

“A guardian is a man, typically a soldier of renown or merit, who has been offered a position as a sort of bodyguard to a matron or witch going into harm's way.” She says. “During times of war, these men would be expected to make sure their witch survived and returned to her hold alive and healthy, no matter what. Many of them didn't come home.”

“I can see why.” You say. “Weren't witches organized into archer units though?” You ask, suddenly remembering the discussion with Ice in the national gallery.

She nods. “Typically, yes. We can discuss history later, though, Mister Bishop.” She says. “Welcome to the service of the crown and it's witches. I'm sure you'll enjoy it.”

“I”m sure.” You state, drily enough that she laughs.

“We're making you a guardian for one reason. A guardian is afforded every privilege and right a witch is. Including unrestricted access to any part of any hold, with or without a witch.” She says. “He has to have that to perform his duty.”

1/2
>>
She smiles again. “You, mister Bishop, just became the guardian of Tabitha Kazinski. As a witch with a permanent holding in the city of London, she falls under my protection, making this well within my right. As her guardian, I am charging you with the retrieval of her personal belongings from the United States Naval witch academy at Annapolis. As Matron of the hold, I will arrange your transport and assign a witch to assist you in your task.” She says, that last part sounding awful formal.

“You'll fly out of Heathrow tomorrow.” She says. “I suspect you'll have to move quickly, Mister Bishop. We don't tend to do things as slowly as the navy.”

“What about Ice?” You say. “I'm her Gaurdian, right? So I'm supposed to look after her?”

Lady Dowding nods.

“Then I want her to be able to relax for the rest of the week.” You say, simply. “We're going back to Barin at some point, but I want her to at least be able to relax until then.”

Lady Dowding smiles. “That will be arranged, Mister Bishop. Now, come with me. I'll have Mary see to miss Kazinski. We need to get you recognized and we have travel arrangements to make. With any luck, you can be returning here within a few days, and not use all your leave doing this.”

You really don't want to tell her you're kind of having fun. Might ruin the image of the long-suffering guy you've got going.
