Having super powers is awesome. Awkward social situations are not quite so awesome. You are Tsubasa Campbell, and you are at the mall doing your shopping scouting trip with Hanako to find your outer femininity. Moments ago you discovered your other friend, Junpei Inoue, was spying on you and Hanako. Junpei is one of your oldest friends, you started working with him at the station in High School, and apparently he did not take the revelation about your gender quite as well as the rest of your circle of friends.

He is across the food court from you, watching the two of you nervously with most of his face buried in a small collected volume of manga. If he wanted to spy on you, he should have gotten a weekly magazine to hide behind. Wait, he has a soda and a shopping bag. Maybe he’s here to do his own stuff and just ran into the two of you? You could wave him over so you and Hanako can go over things with him in a calm and reasoned fas-

Junpie has put his comic away while tilting his ballcap’s visor down and forward. He reaches to the chair beside himself and opens a newspaper with eyes holes cut out. They’re too close together for him, you can tell from her as he struggles to find a comfortable position to see through both. These attempts repeatedly fail.

>Tell Hanako that the two of you are being watched. How? Do you tell her who?
>Stare past Hanako for a moment before supporting your face with an open palm in frustration, “Junpei you idiot,”
>Excuse yourself and walk over to Junpei for words. What words?
>Make creative use of a superpower. What and how?

We don't want this to get awkward, so let's just ignore him until later tonight.

I can work with this.

If Hanako doesn't catch on, just point your chin in his direction while continuing facepalm.
>>

>>Stare past Hanako for a moment before supporting your face with an open palm in frustration, “Junpei you idiot,”

The first thing we must do is berate him and show him the proper way to spy on us

Have we finished shopping? If we have, it might be time to cut this trip short and patch things up with Junpei
>>
Hmm...it appears we are not at an impass.

We are even in our intent to let this go for later and to confront Junpei now.

What will it be? 4 minutes on the clock.

Reply to this post with the number 1 and only the number 1 to leave Junpei be for now.

Reply to this post with the number 2 and only the number 2 to confront Junpei.

If you do not adhere to this rule, your vote shall not count.

Dang, missed it.
Though I figured just the facepalm would set Hanako on him.
>>

Sitting there a moment, you stare past Hanako’s shoulder leaving your as yet finished skewers of meat untouched. She seems confused for a few seconds until you drop your hand into your palm with a gentle exhalation.

“Junpei, you idiot,”

And Hanako understands. She begins to turn to follow your line of sight, but you don’t want to deal with this now.

“Don’t look,” you pick up a spicy chicken skewer, “I’m going to go talk to him,”

Halting her motion, Hanako turns back to you.

“Are you sure. There’s always tonight, and it may help if he’s given a chance to cool down from whatever his problem is with you,”

“No, its fine. If I let him stew he’ll just get that much more worked up later,” you rip a piece of spicy chicken from the skewer and gulp it down in a decidedly unladylike fashion, “Give me maybe a minute before you turn around to watch the show; I don’t want him to see me coming,”

You’ve known Junpei long enough to believe he won’t make a big scene of it. At worst this will probably result in stammering and not being able to look directly at you because he isn’t used to thinking of you as a girl. His potential stammering and blushing gives you just as much amusement as noticing Hanako walk in heels you’d never try to wear earlier, a pleasant smugness.

You walk in his direction but walk past him, heading for another eatery in the court, before turning round a support column and counter to ten. When you emerge, Hanako still has her back to the two of you and Junpei has dropped the newspaper and has a hand on his chest trying to calm a fast beating heart likely caused by worry of being found out.

Walking casually up behind him, you lean over and say in a perfectly reasonable calm voice

“You are absolute shit at spying on people, you know that?” and the result is amusing.

With a start and a slight scream he leaps up and turns to face you. Hanako finally turns at this, her water bottle in hand, to enjoy the spectacle.

“T-Tsuba-Tsubasa-ani-cha-san,” he stammers out while flushed as he stares at you wide eyed for a long second before pulling his cap back down and gritting his teeth.

Okay, this is kind of adorable. Righting yourself, you cross your arms and sigh.

>Be direct. You know what his problem is and he needs to deal. You never set out to deceive anyone, you were just trying to live plainly despite your own problems. How do you want to word this?
>Be indirect. Ask what he’s been up to. If he’s okay, why is he stuttering right now? Is there something wrong? And what’s with that honorific, aren’t you bros?

Be direct. Japanese men can't handle direct.
"Look, Junpei. I never said I was something I wasn't. And I'm not looking to change our friendship. It's all in your head, and you've got to man up and deal with it."
>>
>>31220385

"And you can still call me aniki. I'm still the boss of you."

That should bring him around. Around to what, I haven't the foggiest.

Counting, then writing in a bit.
>>
>>31220631

“You’re just way too predictable, Junpei-kun,” you sigh and adopt the manly posture and body language you’re used to.

“P-pr-predictable? No, I was-”

You stare him down, the big brother to his own immaturity after years of friendship. It actually insults you a bit how much he’s letting this affect things.

“I know what your problem is, and you need to deal,” you lean forward causing him to take a step back into his table, “I never expected this to get undone or revealed so I tried to live plainly, quietly, and happily. It was never my intention to outright deceive anyone, but it was private. Okay?”

Junpei takes a deep breath and looks over to the right, staring off into an SFC. When he speaks, it is with a bit more confidence despite the embarrassed blush across his face. He still doesn’t turn back to face you. Back at the other table, Hanako has gathered all the bags on her arms, and with some effort and balance manages to carry the lot of them with her over to the table quietly. Setting down the trays, and sitting quietly, she leans forward to watch the scene unfold up close.

“Yeah. Yeah I get it. Kaito told us all about your old damage,” he gruffs, “I...I just can’t accept it all so easily,”

1/2
>>
>>31221654

“Can’t accept what? Oi, look at me when I’m talking to you,” you scold, “Who the hell helped you get the courage to ask Fujimoto out? Who stopped you from challenging a cop to a street race? I am not going to apologize for where I’m taking my life and myself now, because I finally have the chance to be the woman I never thought I could be!”

Guilt creases his face and he turns to face you, shaking. His arms are straight and his fists are clenched at his side.

“And she isn’t losing any friends over this, you stupid bastard,”

He snaps up and looks at you full on, some tension leaving his face and replaced by his not quite usual bravado.

“Who's the stupid bastard?” he almost shouts, “You’re the stupid bastard who didn’t think they could trust me, Tsubasa-aniki!”

“Yeah, well check you track record. Remember the motor chick from Osaka you were doing that part exchange online with,” he looks embarrassed, “and you froze up when you met in person for the exchange when you found out she was a girl?”

“Cut it out, Aniki,” he folds his arms and loosens his rigid posture.

“Nah, I gotta remind you of past failures. How else do you expect to learn?”

“From you, like always,” he grows serious, “so...then I have a favor to ask you, bro,”

“You stalk me and ask a favor in the same day. Bold,” you relax against the support beam.

“If she’s not pining after you anymore,” uh oh, “Can you help me ask-”

You know where he’s going with this. She’s right behind him. Decision time.

>Quietly alert him with a flare of your eyes and a cutting motion across your neck.
>Interrupt him with some other topic. What?
>Let him finish and come what may.
>Let him finish and then immediately say “Sure,” look lean to the side to get a full view of Hanako and ask, “Well?”

Well, how well do we know our friends time:
Obviously Hanako will know where he's going with that, though if we interrupt he won't think she knows.

So, how do we think Hanako will want to react?
Would she rather let the situation simmer, and have us interrupt him,
OR
Let him finish and let her answer now?

There is only one way to sort this out. You let the man continue with your face set as impassive stone. Behind him, Hanako’s eyes go wide and her mouth agape.

“-out Hanako-san?” he blushes.

“Sure,” you lean to the side to Junpei’s surprise as you call out to Hanako while you sprout an impish grin, “How was that, or should he try again?”

Junpei goes rigid, then relaxes in defeat as he turns to see Hanako sitting there. Embarrassment and hope course across his face. She’s already closed her mouth and composed herself.

“Junpei, you’re sweet,” she smiles, “but I’m not ready to get into anything new right now. If you’re patient and ask again, well who knows,”

He slumps in his chair with a sigh, lifting his soda and taking a long drag.

“I was worried about that, and yet it was just like pulling off a bandage,” he grouses before laughing, “So, how was your shopping trip?”

“That depends,” you sit down at the table with him and Hanako, “how much of it have you been following us for,”

And he’s getting embarrassed again.

“All of it, I came over early to try and work up the courage to talk to you about,” he makes a wide gesture in your direction, “and then hid when I saw Hanako coming,”

“Still, to have followed us around all day,” Hanako muses as you take another chunk of teriyaki beef off of the skewer, “that’s a bit creepy,”

“Yeah, I screwed up,” he chuckles.

“Not one of your worst,” you think.

“No, he’s definitely had worse,” Hanako agrees, “How is he going to make this travesty up to us?”

“HEY NOW!”

“Stop being so noisy,” you growl and get him to pipe back down, “I’d say carrying the spoils of war home for us,”

“Awww,” Hanako coes, “Tsubasa-chan you’re coming along wonderfully in my instructed arts!”

“Hey, watch it with the -chan,” you mutter, “I’m almost as tall as you now,”

“And Tsubasa-chan will always be Tsubasa-chan,” she sticks her tongue out at you.

“Hey, Junpei, back me up here!”

“Nah, for once I think I’ll enjoy seeing you twist in the wind. I’ll get the bags,” he smiles.

Great. Just great. This is nice. This is familiar. As fun as it is, you quickly finish your assorted meals and make way back to the apartment; you’ve a grocery delivery soon. After a short time of chatting, Junpei commenting on how much stuff you got delivered, and a general wind down from the day and wind up to your party. Its nice, and you look forward to seeing the rest of your friends later.

Junpei is in the middle of a story about a client at the garage he’s currently employed at, a man in his fifties still sporting a pompadour and driving old muscle cars, when there is a knock on the apartment door. You weren’t expecting anything else today.

Rolled 2

“Keep it quiet, if its a reporter or something I’d rather have them think I wasn’t home,” you whisper as you rise.Walking quietly to the door, you lean over to the peep hole and see a peculiar lack of sight. You hold there for a second unsure of what it means when the door shudders in the same instance that you hear a small explosion soaked through the door. Three in quick succession. At a distance they might sound like short and loud pops. Wood splinters across your face and you feel kicked back by the impact, ever so slightly, as you feel two points of pressure on your cheek and your chest. Momentum slips through and around you, divesting the piercing force as you land on your back.

A high pitched whine fills your ears but passes as Hanako and Junpei are on top of you to check if you're alright. There is a sensation like rapidly cooking metal in the back of your throat, on your face, and on your chest. You hear Hanako crying out in relief as she finds no wound as the whine fades. Junpei states for a second at the rapidly cooling point on your face.

A glossiness takes Junpei's eyes for a second, and the burgeoning look of horror gives way to basic concern.

"You okay, Aniki?" He extends his hand and you take it.

Rising from the floor, two flattened discs land with a clang, one from beneath your sweater, the other from your cheek. You've seen videos an diagrams of these on bullet proof glass &!plastics. Flattened bullets. Junpei and Hanako just watched a bullet fall off of your face.

Still, they're shaken up that you've been shot, and to their perception probably missed. In the back of your mind you replay your undersea magnetic orchestration of hundreds upon hundreds of fish.

Did you do this? Did you prevent then from freaking out about a slug flattening on your face?

Wait, you feel something fall loose in the back of your throat as you try to speak. You choke it down rough and ragged. Another flattened bullet in your mouth.

After assurances that you're okay, only startled, you call the police.

Brushing the flattened bullets not sitting in your stomach aside, you sit and give a brief account as they go over the scene and prep for forensics. Your landlord will replace your door, but they'll need a few hours to process the scene. They ask if you've a place to stay tonight.

Hanako and Junpei leap at the chance and offer their apartment and home respectively. As the officers process the scene while taking their statements, you feel the subtle power you didn't know you had trying to work, and reign it back.

Better they have an I solved mystery than discrepancies in paper work and photography. You quickly pack an overnight bag, and hope no one notices the thing bullet hole in your sweater.

"So, how about that barbecue?" You smile as you pull back any ongoing influence you have on the two.

They don't freak out about the things you already hid, that's probably altered and reasoned away. Junpei offers to carry your bag.

"No, it's okay. I want something to hold onto right now,"

"Alright, Aniki," and then grouses and gets a bit angry, "Bombs and guns. What's this country coming too when someone throws up that much effort to kill a lady who isn't hurting anyone?"

He thrusts his hands into his pockets and stalks ahead as Hanako hangs back alongside you.

"Are you going to be okay?" She's worried about you...more than the other day.

Everyone will probably be, which is just perfect.

What does Mori Micro Industries know? What do they suspect? What did that explosion actually do to you? It's a weight in your chest, this lonely feeling.

You can do impossible things. You ARE a freak, and someone tried to put a bullet in your head after buying out the hospital you were comatose in. Yesterday you plucked an airliner from a free fall, you saved people.

And someone is trying to kill you because...because you don't know.

All that worry can't matter now. You can let yourself grow a bit more after tonight. You can let the natural questions arise from them later. Right now, everything is fine for the sake of your friends. You've grown stronger, and not just physically.

"Yeah, Hanako," the smile is genuine, "I'm fine,"

"Tsubasa-chan," she smiles in return, "you really are unshakable,"

"Nah, I'm plenty shaken. I'm just too excited to have a good night with my friends. On top of that, I'm going to make our venue regret having an all you can eat special tonight," your declaration carries.

Hanako giggles a bit.

"Well, since I've been super good today," she lays a hand on her hip, "I'll do my best to help you with that,"

"What, even after Junpei's little stunt you're going to cut loose in front of him?" You inquire earnestly.

"My heart needs time to mend," she fake cries before stretching her arms high, "There's something important I have to wait for first,"

She pivots ahead of you, halting your stride. Her arms fall and clasp behind her back as she faces you.

"I need to wait and see if it needs time to mend or not,"

She turns to catch up to Junpei. You stand there, stunned as you watch her jog ahead.

Or maybe a way to track them down.
Or both.
Not sure would cover both, and we only have points for 1 new d4 power.

Low grade Cosmic Awareness?

Precog?
Though that can be a strong headtrip.

I can second >>31227468
also our status is still bloated in the pastebin
can we not be bloated
>>
>>31227254
We need to be adding a word to the normality power so we can control it, it's starting to get out of hand.
>>
>>31227602
We were controlling it, when the police cam Gyoji wrote we reined it in.

Can we get some sort of healing aura ability? Our friends might get caught in the cross fire.

Something like "Abnormal things literally do not happen"
or "Wings of Protection"?
>>
You aren't bloated, I just forgot to change it.
>>
>>31229008
phew!
>>
>>31227907
Maybe 'My Friends are Protected'? If we're after a 'passive' protection.
Though there is something to be said about sensing the danger ahead of time, or noticing/tracking/sleuthing them out.

Sherlock Holmes: 1d4

Out getting groceries and had dinner. Will return later to conduct vote.

Vote on a new d4 power. Spread the salt and begin this conflict.

>Low Grade Cosmic Awareness
>This literally did not happen
>Precognitive senses
>The Art of Deductive Reasoning
>Wings of Protection
>My friends are protected

Let this vote begin.

Also, I am surprised there was not more comment on the end of the thread.

Another time, maybe. We still have to, yknow, actually use weights and stuff.
>>
>>31232834
yeah, it's better to build up to it than get it right away
>>
>>31232744
I think we're set on that front already.

>>31232391
I kinda like going all Sherlock with
>The Art of Deductive Reasoning

Also, less brain bendy than straight up awareness, and we could probably use it with Cunning checks in general, which seems handy.
>>
>>31232921
but cosmic awareness is awesome

I see. And now, so will you.

Well, at least we picked up the sanity reinforcements last round of upgrades.

Not enough stuff happened this thread that was unexpected, really. We're just waiting for things to develop

>>31236911
I gotta say, I didn't expect to be shot in the face today.
>>
>>31239119
You didn't? Bought entire hospital, immediately called for a settlement pay to minimize media coverage, multiple consipracy alarms online...

They wanted us silenced.

If we weren't too busy with superpowers, I'd totally voted on ways to stay alive.
>>
>>31239539
You think Mori Micro is behind it?
I dunno, with the mysterious figure slipping in and such, I feel there's another party at play.
Mori Micro could easily have had access to our medical info through their money and hospital ownership.
Someone without that access needed to sneak into an upper story room and steal samples of our blood. Someone that could survive a mini-nuke without leaving a trace.

I'm sure Mori Micro is up to something, but they aren't the only hand in play.
Also, strange that the assailant knew when to blow through the door when we got close enough, either they have great timing, or are unusually perceptive.

Another also, I harbor concerns that wasn't really a hit, so much as a test of our abilities.

OR.. it was an unrelated nutter going after us because our possible lifestyle offends them.
>>
>>31239816
I don't know for sure if Mori Micro is responsible, but with what's happening, getting shot isn't surprising. Could be all sorts of people.

If it was really an unrelated nutter, though, goddamn some people are crazy. This is Japan, right? Considering how Junpei acts with the aniki thing. I don't recall random shootings to be Japanese MO though.
>>
>>31240029
Mostly because guns are illegal in Japan. Cops, JSDF, and the occasional Hunter have legal access. But the crime of choice in Japan is the stabbin'

Also, wasn't it described as the blood thief being in the window sill before the conflagration happened?

Given concerns I have had as of late, and because I saw them echoed and discussed in QTG, I will be revising the system fairly soon.

This will not alter what you have so far earned, but it will alter the nature of play. Your abilities will continue to be named as they have been, but the resolution mechanic will change as I am a bit frustrated keeping track of so many different sizes of dice.

It was suggested that I leave Dice Explosions behind.

Over my rotting corpse.

I will work on this revision while pondering other matters for my primary quest. You may not see these changes brought forward for at least until next thread, maybe longer, until it sits comfortably with me that I may display them to you for discussion before implementation.
>>
>>31241162
Maybe 'roll largest applicable die, other count as a bonus'?
Like say: a 1d20, 1d8, 2d4 could apply to the task, we'd roll a 1d20+5, with 3 from the d8 as the third die code up and 2 from the two entry dice.
>>
>>31241459
I like the system, but I do have to admit that tracking the dice rolls seems problematic.
Something along these lines keeps it roughly the same, but makes the rolling a bit simpler.
