Notes on Rolls and Voting:

When I request rolls, each set of three rolls counts for one action. For example, a two-step plan would take the first 6 linked rolls. A particularly bad failure can interrupt a string of actions.

When rolling 1d100, I will consider criticals within the first ten linked rolls. Only criticals that occur in the first three rolls will be counted as "supercrits". This is still the case even if you'd have plan long enough to require more than ten rolls.

When rolling 1d20, the rules are the same, but I only consider criticals for the first five rolls, rather than ten. Criticals in the first three are still "supercrits".

When a plot choice results in extensive debate, I'll try to weed out the most popular trains of thought, and then call a vote on them. When voting, please respond with only a link back to the post and the number corresponding to your opinion. Other votes are discounted, including those with dice rolls or extra spaces.

Finally, note that this is not a democracy; it is a benevolent dictatorship.

Recent Events Summary:

The war meeting has come and gone. While Fang's battle plan went relatively unopposed, Sandalphon will be joining you when you infiltrate Kan-Abar to kill the summoners that are maintaining the demon lords. Of course, he needs them for his own plan - so his help is likely to be mixed. At the same time, you actually need his plan to be successful - up to the point that he brings Sir Flint out into the open.

After the meeting, you decided to place your teleport anchor at the battlefield in preparation, and then traveled to Kan-Abar to scout out the enemy headquarters and add the Earth mana pool there to your growing manaport network. The mages have seemingly been slowly corrupted by the demons - their minds are bent away from the possibility of compromise and peace. A young mage named Delan, that appears to have resisted this process, was almost cornered when he spoke his worries about the demons aloud, but having followed him through the palace, you snatched him from the jaws of death, along with a two of his servant aquaintences.

Delan has told you a few things you didn't know - the fourth and most powerful demon lord shares the elements of Wind and Lightning, and while magically powerful, is relatively physically weak. He's also told you that the weakness of Kan-Abar's fire towers is their fuel source, the fire mana pool.

After leaving him to be questioned by your allies, you meditated, and then decided to speak with the Black Lady about the Staff of Winds before your double date. Abigail came with you; she did most of the talking. Melody was reluctant to accept your vision of a redeemable Yi Fang; old hurts and valid suspicions are keeping her at bay. She has yet to make a committment either way, but said she would at least hear him out.

The date was a bit tense, but Fang let his guard down and went on about a few stories from his past. After dinner, he and the Black Lady walked home alone. You and Abigail both promptly went to spy on them.

Fang - having picked up on a few tells - deduced that the Black Lady was in fact Melody. Both of them revealed their true feelings, good and bad. Ultimately, they reconciled, and rediscovered something they had believed lost.

Later, you met with Auriel. Hecate agreed to take her to see Donovan within his dream, though things between them aren't particularly peachy. While they were gone, you had a strange conversation with Adavan, in which he implied that Hecate's goals might not align with your own. You also learned that Hecate can hear any nearby telepathic speech, reguardless of if it was directed only at particular persons or not.

Auriel informed you that while Charmeine is stuck in her position as a moderate influence within the Ring City, the more enigmatic Raphael wants to speak with you the following morning. In the meantime, you're going to see Fang and cook up some airship-related trouble for Kan-Abar's forces.

>Last time...

"Alright," you say, "you convinced me. Have at those mines."

"Construction is beginning," Steward says. "Now."

"How would you gauge Kan-Abar's fire towers as a priority?" you ask him. "You've heard Delan's intel?"

"I have."

"I'm thinking about trying to disable them. But..."

"The fire towers are designed to eliminate aerial targets," Steward says. "As we are no longer dropping in troops by airship, it would seem unnecessary effort to remove them as a factor in your efforts to kill the demon summoners. Once you are on the ground, they are not a threat. While disrupting their power source would be helpful overall, it does not advance our immediate goals, and risks drawing unwanted and dangerous attention."

"...oh. I suppose you might be right."

"Further," Steward says, "Sandalphon will likely be flying outside the city. Perhaps it would be better to leave them intact for other reasons."

"...heh. I think I get it."

Steward gives you a mechanical nod and walks off.

It's well past midnight, now, in the early morning. After today, there are three days until the battle begins. According to the plan, Fang aims to launch the first harrying assault a few hours before first light.

You decide you need to put a dent in the enemy airforce - in particular, return control of as many of Kelvere's vessels as possible to Duke Vellik. With that in mind, you make your way toward Fang's room.

When you open the door, the room is empty. On the back wall is a portal, set into the stone. You eye it suspiciously - it seems to lead into what looks like Yi Fang's study, back in Archon.

"Well, I assume you were coming to see me," calls Fang. "Don't stand there like a fool."

You inch forward and step your way through the portal. Fang is seated at his great wooden desk. The wide window at the back of the room shows you a view of a night-lit Archon. Duke Vellik is seated in one of the plush chairs before the desk.

"Since when did you have this set up?"

"Since we arrived, obviously," Fang says. "You don't think I trust anyone else to run this place, do you?"

"I suppose not."

"You have good timing, Shadow," Vellik says. "We were discussing something important. I have a certain arms store outside of Kelvere. If I could gain access to it prior to the battle, my troops would be a lot better off. While I'm short on numbers, I might make up for that in power."

"What sort of store are we talking about?"

"Dwarven technology."

"I thought you destroyed your laboratory when the demon lord attacked."

Fang sighs. "Just when I think he's making progress."

"Never put all your valuables in one place, Shadow," Vellik says.

"Right. So how do I figure into this?"

"Simple," Vellik says. "We need a distraction to keep the brutes occupied while I slip in and collect my things. We've both agreed that this whole thing should be on a need-to-know basis, where our allies are concerned."

"And the angels don't need to know."

"Precisely. And you're our best distraction. I'd wager quite a bit on it."

"Well," you say, "I'm planning on appropriating an airship or three. Get your fleet back under your control. I think I can manage a distraction."

Vellik raises an eyebrow. "While I applaud your ambition, getting an airship back here alone will probably be a considerable struggle."

"I've got my methods."

"If you say so, I won't argue. I'm prepared to leave immediately. Night will cloak us."

Hyperion probably looked more person-y, but I like light elementals that look like they're made of shapes and glowing runes.
Raijin spot on
Aeolus was a green dragon (but I always imagined him as a genie before we found out he was a dragon).
Logi was a phoenix, but I always thought of him was like just a big fireball vaguely shaped like a pyramid with spider legs. Not sure why, though.

"It would probably be easier if I went alone," you say.

"That would involve revealing the location," Vellik says. "I understand if that makes you reticent."

"Are you going to be able to bring back everything on your own? How long of a distraction will you need?"

"I'll be using a bit of my own magic to transport the goods a safe distance away. I have a unit already in position to receive me. We'll be retreating across the river and into the Great Forest, then heading south from there to join my main force. If you can give me, oh, ten minutes or so, I'll be in, out, and on my way."

"You must have had a lot of confidence that I was going to help you to go ahead and do all that."

Vellik shrugs. "I would have gone anyway. I can't allow the demons any advantages."

"What exactly are these weapons?"

"That," Vellik says, "is sensitive. And private." His eyes slant toward Yi Fang.

Maybe you can get him to tell you later. But maybe you'd rather know right now.

"Alright," you say. "Then let's get going."

-----------
-----------

About a two hour's flight later, you arrive on a high hilltop outside of Evinbrook.

The castle looms on the cliffside over the river. The structure is still beaten and broken from the earlier battle; the occupying forces haven't bothered trying to repair the towers. Rather, the massive armies have sprawled out over the suburbs covering the nearby landscape. Forts of wood and stone populate the landscape at strategic high points, built by engineering and earth magic. The landscape has been heavily altered. Trenches and spiked earthworks form perimeters around the main encampments and the new fortifications. They almost seem to be ignoring the structures that are already there entirely.

"Hmm," Vellik says. "Clever."

"What is?"

"They know me. They know better than to try and use my own city as a defensive position, so they made their own outside of it." He eyes the sprawling armies and torches. "There. Two airships."

You look up. There are indeed two shadows floating high in the clear night sky, circling the armies below in a clearly defensive formation. One is long, very long, and fluted, as if built for speed. Its front end is drawn out to a narrow point. The other ship is similarly slim, but much shorter. It bristles with guns.

"The small one is the Bolt," Vellik says, "my rapid assault ship. If I'm not mistaken, the other is the Painted Sword, one of Kan-Abar's airships. It's designed for ramming."

"A ramming airship?"

Vellik nods. "Certainly. Good for attacking and boarding larger, more sluggish gunships." He scans the sky. "The other airships must be patrolling. Well, this is where we part. I'll wait until I hear a commotion."

Actually it is the opposite. The rapid assault ship built for speed, and the slightly larger gun bristling rammer.

Since once we pocket one, the other will be made aware of our presence, which means whichever ship we deal with first will wind up with us having to deal with the other later on.

Which is harder for us to deal with personally, is what I think it comes down to.

Bolt: Slim, Short, Much Gun. Duke Velliks rapid assault ship.

Painted Sword: Long, Pointy, built for speed and ramming. Kan-Abar bad momma.
>>
>>31268517
i want to infiltrate the ship and eat the crew for XP instead of letting them get eaten by the skysever
>>
>>31268513
Bolt would be harder to deal with if it knew we were there due to all the guns.

If it saw us then that's a lot of firepower directed at us.

As opposed to the minimal weaponry aboard the Painted sword.
>>
>>31268459
>>31268493

You ask Vellik for some information about the ships. He tells you that they're both fast, but that the Painted Sword is probably faster; he's never seen it in action. The Bolt, however, possesses much more firepower.

Your wisp quietly rests in the grass behind Vellik as you take flight.

You glide quietly into the night, leaving the Duke behind. You slowly gain altitude, taking your time so as to not attract attention from anything below.

The flickering lights of the encampments and patrols are spread throughout the highlands. You can feel two of the demon lords; powerful presences of mana. The third - supposedly in Kelvere - isn't within the range of your sensing.

The ruined castle dwindles to the size of a toy fort. The encampments are now flickering twinkles of light and motion.

You pass the altitude of your target, the Bolt, and drift on a warm updraft. The rumbling airship follows a regular path. It steadily drifts under you, powered by a core of Lightning. You can feel the dynamo turning inside of it, and the magic bristling on its armor, keeping the Skyserver at bay.

And you can feel the prickle of that Wind magic starting to gravitate toward you...

What do you do?

Even if that isn't true then if a fight breaks out then they will undoubtedly be able to detect us due to it being staffed by magic users (demons) and being able to tell they're gone. This probably applies to if we just stealthily eat one because even if they don't sense us then they'll sense the absence of their friend.

You open your wings, rising higher. Your mana condenses into a black ball of power. A moment later, the Nightblaze fires. The condensed orb slams into the airship, and the Lightning on the outside crackles and flickers in angry protest as your spell spins in place, fighting the defensive shielding.

You sweep in a moment later, push your hand against the armor, and -

The Lightning flares up! A blast of gold electricity annihilates your arm. You spin down and away, the right half of your body smoking. You manage to right yourself and maintain your altitude.

>you've taken 5 damage

The Skysever starts to bite at the edges of your wings...

>you've taken 1 damage

The gun nest under one of the nearby canons slides open, revealing a translucent, rounded window. The soldier manning the cannon looks about for a moment. He spots you. His jaw drops. He starts fumbling around for something. The short canon swivels to face you.

Actually, to your credit, I may have said something like this:

>You can Blink through anything that you would have to walk up to and Ink through, as long as you can see a position through it

You Blink into the gun nest.

It's a little cramped in here - there's just room enough for the gunner's seat. You appear inside, squashed somewhat up above on the ceiling. The word "auto" is flashing on the gun's console.

The man is fumbling for some sort of device hooked to the wall. When he hears the cannon start to swivel, he glances back. He stares out the window, his eyes hunting for his missing target.

You fall upon him and consume him in seconds. Not much of a meal; not much resistance.

>you've gained 2 health (78/81)

It seems you've entered the airship without being detected, for the moment. But Duke Vellik still needs his distraction.

Hmm.

You could pocket the airship outright - but you don't know how it would react with the engines still active. Perhaps you should disable the engines, first?

If you did that, though, the thing would start dropping right out of the sky.

...and onto the armies below. A good distraction. Vellik's 'stash' might be worth it.

But then you'd really be risking an encounter with a Demon Lord. Right now, that could prove lethal.

What do you do?

You decide that, first, you need to accomplish your main goal of disabling and Pocketing this airship.

The engines should be easy enough to find - the humming, whirling core of Lightning resonates throughout the craft. You open the door of the gun nest and fine yourself in a hallway lined with similar doors on one side - all leading to the cannons for manual operation. You duck under a steel crossbeam and tramp down the hall.

You turn through an intersection. The dynamo is below you, and ahead. You go straight, and then start looking for a stairwell. You notice a sign with a stick figure moving on stairs etched on it, and soon you've made your way down into the bowels of the ship.

The doors to the engine room are propped open. The repetitive roar of pistons, steam, and oiled iron clanking and grinding fills the air. You peek into the engine room.

Lightning washes over you. It doesn't feel as oppressive as it once might - you've gotten stronger.

On the far side of the room is the Lightning Dynamo, a sphere of crackling gold light contained by whirling adamantium shielding and power-converting devices. There's a wall of levers next to it. One of those probably shuts it off, or stops the spinning. Or something. You're not really an expert.

There is one mage that feels like fire, standing at a console containing various readouts. He wears a pair of protective ear plugs. Five soldiers are gathered around a table much closer to you; they're playing cards, and not wearing anything on their ears. The mage is probably the engineer.

In sight are three demons. Two satyrs, also of fire, flank the mage. A fat ugly Imp is sitting up in the rafters, eyeballing the soldiers from between a bundle of cables. It feels like Wind and Lightning.

What do you do?

You unpocket Shade and catapult him across the room. <Keep the mage busy!>

<Understood.>

>mana: 64/76

Shade lands on a knee and springs into an attack. One of the satyrs dives forward to protect its master. It's smashed into the wall of the ship by one of Shade's fists, but that provides enough time for the mage to start preparing magic.

Meanwhile, the guards are falling over themselves trying to get out of their chairs and figure out what's going on. The Imp has already turned to face Shade from its perch. A mixed beam of wind and lightning begins to churn between its hands.

And then you're behind it. It glances back. Its eyes widen. Your, twisting, ripping maw slams shut over its head.

It's fighting back! The legs under you kick as it tries to drag itself back out. But it's no use. In a few moments, you've eviscerated and dissolved its head. The rest of the body follows even as if evaporates into its component magic.

>you've gained 2 EXP (8)
>you've gained 5 mana (69/76)

Your meal completed, you reorient. Shade's outer casing looks pretty seared, but the other satyr has been blown in half by shadow magic. The mage is shooting waves of fire at Shade, who is skating around the floor on shadow, swiftly closing the gap.

Three of the soldiers are bolting for the exit! One more is going for something on the wall - it looks like the same sort of square device you saw in the gun nest. The final guard is cowering under the table.

Terror slams down over the room, a palpable fear that makes the guards stumble and the mage's spell flicker.

But the Lightning Dynamo reacts angrily to the spirit magic! The shuddering Spirit dissipates quickly. Shade dodges wildly to avoid being melted to slag by a bolt of plasma.

While you couldn't stop the three guards leaving the room, you've still got time to stop the last one from reaching his goal. You Blink down between the soldier and the wall. Your shadowy limb sinks into his skull with almost no resistance; he dies instantly. You lift him off the ground and consume his corpse.

>>
You decide that the guards need to be taken care of.

You blink into the stairwell and block the upward path with your body, expanding into a widening net of tentacles that warp your human image. One of the guards falls down and crawls backwards. Another screams. One pulls out his sword and stabs at you.

>you've taken 0 damage

"That stung."

You grab the sword, then hurl it at the guard retreating into the corner on his hands and feet. It impales him through the stomach. You smack the soldier in front of you with a limb, taking his head clean off. Another limb strikes simultaneously at the screaming guard, ripping him in two from his shoulder down to his waist. He falls apart onto the floor. Blood and guts pool quickly underneath your enemies.

It's been a while since you've done something like this. You forget how fragile normal humans are...

You consume the corpses. On the way back toward Shade, you stab the guard still under the table and consume him as well.

>HP: 81/81

By the time you reach your construct, the fight is over. Shade's fist is now through the mage's stomach, though his hand is blackened and burned.

<Shade, are you alright?>

<Damage is mostly superficial.> Shade's hand rotates on the axis of his wrist. His fingers click and whir. <Finger joint dexterity has dropped 72%. Self-repair will take two hours.>

You quickly consume the mages corpse before the energy can leak away.

>you've gained 1 EXP (9)
>you've gained 3 mana (72/76

The roar of the engine continues unabated in the background. You look at the whirling dynamo shielding, then back to Shade. <Can you make an sense of this?>

Shade moves to the control panel. He examines the main control levers. <I understand the function of the engine. What would you like to do?>

<Can you force the guns to fire from here?>

<No,> Shade says. <I can increase their power by sacrificing shielding and other ship functions, but the bridge should have the weapon controls.>

<Alright. Shut the engine down.>

<Understood.> Shade presses a few buttons on the console, then flips three of the switches, one after another.

The adamantium shielding whirling around the dynamo stops; it rises and folds into the ceiling. A panel on the wall slides open, containing another switch.

-Power Converter Kill Switch-

Shade hits it with his fist.

The final section of the engine sinks into the floor, leaving the dynamo exposed on its pedestal. The lights in the engine room shut off with a sudden thump of mana. Green emergency lights blink on at the edge of the walls.

A wailing emergency siren echoes through the ship. You hear a rising howl of wind.

<Thanks Shade.> You Pocket him. With your feet still touching the floor, it's only a thought for you to Pocket the airship.

>mana: 70/76

And then, you're standing in midair, a dizzying height above the ground. The rest of the crew is in a similar state - most of them lying flat in long rows where they'd been sleeping in their bunks, now hanging in the sky. Another group is clustered up and away, probably where the bridge was. Others are scattered here and there.

You all plummet like rocks. An angry green Wind surrounds you all in a sphere of death, and it's closing in fast.

>>
>>31271487
They have no clue it's us.

Just like they have no clue The Hungry Man is us.
>>
You spread your wings, open your Maw, and dive into the falling clouds of people.

The screams start almost immediately. Most of them were woken by the alarm when the power cut off. Few of them got out of their bunks in the few seconds before you pocketed the ship.

You dive through the crowd of flailing men, eating them almost as fast as you can fly. You decide that better pickings are probably up on the bridge, and head there after a single pass through the easy snacks. You grab one last soldier as you go, flapping your wings as you feed him into your churning mouth.

Magical blasts of fire, wind, and shields of Earth mana are being flung up and around the bridge cluster. You see demons flying - some of them don't have wings, but are doing their best to fight the skysever with balls of whatever mana they can muster. It's like trying to hold back a storm by blowing at it. The skysever leaps forward like a greedy child, devouring anything that dares stand against it.

You sweep through the carnage, cleaning up the shreds of demons and mages alike. The skysever needles and slashes at you, but your skin is tougher than theirs.

>you've taken 10 damage
>you've healed 4 damage from Hydra
>you've gained 7 HP from consumption (81/81)
>you've gained 2 mana (76/76)
>you've gained 5 EXP (14)

The churning ball of limbs, magic, and furious Wind continues toward the ground.

You feel a powerful presence positioning itself on the ground under you. It must be one of the demon lords.

What do you do?

A Rainbow with a Demon Lord at the end of it
>>
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9zM0zSXLOEA

You unleash an Army of Darkness.

>mana: 71/76

A field of dozens of monsters explode like fireworks from your body. Some of them are almost exact replicas of you; others are twisted versions, creatures of wings and tentacles and fangs without discernible form or function. A gust of shadow follows in their wake, and they create a noise that competes against the howl of the skysever.

A handful of them take off for the Painted Sword, as if reading your intent. Others dive straight for the ground. A few of the mirages nip and bite at the heels of the falling men still alive. You make your escape from the storm of destruction as the illusions promote a chaos that's all their own.

>you've taken 12 damage from the skysever
>you've healed 5 damage with Hydra (HP: 74/81)

As you leave the circle of destruction, some of the Wind follows you, needling and slashing at your backside, but you weather the attacks. Your illusions are hacked at by the Winds, but their shadowy substance merely swirls and reforms once more, carried on by the power of your spell.

A beam of shadow erupts from the ground, concentrated mana poured fourth by the demon lord, strong enough to punch a hole in the skysever's enclosing wall. It slices through several of your illusions like a sword, forcing them to dissipate. The beam even takes out a soldier, cutting him neatly in half. You doubt the demon cares.

The beams continue to hack and slash through your illusory army while you make a quiet escape. That should probably keep them distracted for a bit.

One airship down!

EREBUS ACKBAR

I mentioned it last thread, but it was too late for responses:

What do you guys think of the idea of pouring some Order on the Elemental Lords? Including Chaos into our Order made us less of an autistic fuck. What if adding Order to people like Hecate will make her less of a domineering, capricious bitch that's bent on control and invasion of privacy?

Point is to drag them down. But when I think over it, it would take some extreme circumstances to make it effective. Like unpocketing 4 shadow dynamos all at the same time around an angel would cripple him or something.

Well, the reason I mention it is because..

..we actually know exactly what Hecate is like, believe it or not. We know the exact and precise extent of Spirit magic and what sort of personalities develop around excessive amounts of Spirit: The mages of Archon - and more specifically, Fang and Abby (more specifically Abby's Empress form).

Basically take all of the political bullshit, the backstabbing, the spying and the totalitarianism of Archon, and crank it up to eleven, and presto, you have Hecate. Hecate is Spirit incarnate.

The same applies to other nations too: the Light-born and the Angels are all embodying, in one way or another, Hyperion's personality traits more than likely. Sandalphon, in particular, would be the closest to being 'like Hyperion' in personality.

David turned out the way he did because Erebus essentially tried to make a human more like him (I suspect it may have been an experiment on Erebus' part as to whether or not he could manipulate humans to be more Order-focused), and he snapped because of it.

In other words, if we wanna have a fair estimate of the kind of people the Elemental Lords might actually be like? Look to the big players, the world leaders. It's entirely plausible that Logi may be more like our prince friend than we think, and Hecate is more like Fang/Empress Abby; a schemer who might have a soft spot for her own kind, but is ultimately a ruthless bitch out for her own end goal - and everything else can get thrown under a bus for it.

Damn anon that's a good read. I'm gonna look back for a bit but I think you're on to something nice with all that.

Archive analysis time...

The real nice thing about your theory is that it works both from an inheritance of elemental energies perspective, and the perspective of the kind of cultures that formed around the elementals which these peoples have continued to maintain. Very good.

It's worth noting that Geb had TWO factions corresponding to him, and they both hated each others' guts. Unless this is some sort of convoluted fault line metaphor, I guess.

>We know the exact and precise extent of Spirit magic and what sort of personalities develop around excessive amounts of Spirit.
If personality traits were caused by the exposure to that sort of magic itself, Melody should be the most Erebus-like, Hemmelus should be half-insane, and so on.

It seems far more likely that those who rise to positions of power do so because they use the means at their disposal. If you're a spirit mage and you want to become more powerful, OF COURSE you use your magic (mind manipulation, summoned creatures as remote operatives, telepathy) to advance your cause.

This is actually the part that I hate about it; there's no attempt at all to distinguish between Nature and Nurture. Which is the cause and which is the effect.

Did the Elemental Lords have their distinct personalities because those were naturally dominant aspects of their elements? Or do powerful people today have similarities to the Elemental Lords because those values have been ingrained in them by virtue of growing up within the long-lasting cultures forged by the Elemental Lords in their own image?

This argument doesn't get us anywhere close to finding out which is actually the case. It's fun to theorize about, sure, but it's totally circular.

..Why not both? Humans, essentially, would have more freedom over their actions, being humans, while Elemental Lords act according to their element.

But being Elemental Lords, they fostered and encouraged humans to 'act like your element'.

Did anyone consider that it may not be easy for the elemental lords to get over a war that killed nearly all of their people?
And then Erebus wakes them up and says "Well you should totally help those angels who genocided your followers and later enslaved them by putting their souls in little jars"
TL;DR Give her some time
