Welcome to Banished Quest!
You take the role of a young mage, labeled a criminal by his people and cast out into the wider world. In the last thread, you died. You also took on a contract to assassinate a Lord and received a magical artifact of largely indeterminate purpose. Overall, a productive thread.

“By the gods, you look like shit. Not just your skin tone either.” Your asshole neighbor remarks. Taking a better look at him now, he can't be much older than you. Mid-twenties, dark cropped hair, olive skin. Probably a local, then. Has the look of an adventurer about him, with a broad-bladed straight sword strapped to his hip and various pouches of indeterminate use. “Your mother kept me up all night, what can I say?” You shoot back. He scoffs. “So you fuck corpses now? Figures, you darkies always turn out a little touched in the head.”

“If you humans didn't keel over in a heartbeat you'd live to grow insane too.” He folds his arms in front of his chest. “Oooh, what a shame we don't live for centuries and get to watch everything we know and love die of be destroyed.” You roll your eyes. “That's one of the differences between us and humans. We build things to last, what we know and love doesn't crumble away after a few decades. You humans had one great empire which destroyed itself and you've yet to accomplish anything in the thousand years since.” He bares his teeth, seems that dig got to him. “One great empire which every civilization since has aspired to. Besides, what do you know of humans? Have you traveled beyond this provincial backwater?”

You sense that he's gathering vys for a spell. If you had to guess, probably a paralysis spell judging by the grey discoloration creeping up his left arm. In your current weakened state, any sort of retaliation would probably leave you unconscious. You feel apprehension, perhaps even fear, tangling in your gut.
>Brush past him haughtily, this conversation is through.
>Retreat back down the stairwell, you don't want no trabble.
>Well, you're a master water Vatis! You can do plenty of posturing without tiring yourself out. Scare him off.

You think about replying, but this could get ugly if you taunt him much more. Instead you stick your nose up in the air and stride forward. A bit ballsy, all things considered. Especially since all he'd need to do to leave you paralyzed and helpless in the middle of the hallway is brush his hands against you and discharge the spell. You've yet to learn the Manipulate effect, and thus wouldn't be able to counter it. Then again, even if you knew the Manipulate effect you don't have enough vys stored to cast the counterspell.

You bump your shoulder against his confrontationally, and you see his hand snap forward, palm forward to strike you in the solar plexus. You slip around the blow easily, and he ends up discharging the spell into thin air. You turn the dodge into a spin and walk backwards towards your suite door, displaying a cocky smirk and thrusting one fist up while the other clasp your bicep, the universal symbol for 'up yours'.

Perhaps not the most mature thing to do, but the look on his face is priceless. The hate, the scowl, the disappointment. It really just fills you with a deep sense of satisfaction. He stomps off towards the stairwell and you slip into your suite, letting out a breath you hadn't realized you were holding. That would’ve been just terribly embarrassing if you hadn't pulled that off.

Chryssa is waiting for you in the kitchen, absentmindedly scribbling away in a notebook. “What are you so pleased about?” She ask, to which you reply with a shrug. “You mean besides the fancy new cloak?” You spread it out so she can get a good look at it. You think it's rather neat. “Yes, besides the fancy new cloak.” You pull out a chair across from her and sit down. “I just made some prick look like a complete idiot. It feels good.” She rolls her eyes, going back to her scribbling. “Did you take the job?” Her tone of voice is flat, but you're getting better at reading her. She's got a vested interest in knowing. “I did, I found his reasons acceptable and the reward-” You run your fingers along the hem of the cloak. “-sufficient.”

She closes the book and sets it aside gently, shooting you a glare. “You know, a cloak isn't exactly a reward we can all benefit from.” Before you can get into an argument, the door opens and slams shut. Profectus and Fulvia come waltzing in, Prof wearing some obnoxiously frilly silk shirt with impractically poofy sleeves. Fulvia carrying to small bags filled with jingling coins. “We're back! Hope we didn't miss anything.” He says, snatching one of the bags from Fulvia and tying it to his belt.

“No, you didn't miss anything. Just waiting on the blueprints of City Hall to be delivered.” You respond, he nods and pulls out a chair next to you. “So I take it your trip to the library went well?” Chryssa remarks wryly. “Oh, well, uh... you see, there were these students, yeah, these students who wanted to show me a few tricks to meditating. Anyway, one thing lead to another and before you know it I'm, I mean Fulvia, is robbing these suckers for all their worth at this card game.” You sigh. “Profectus, you don't need to lie. We're not going to shun you for going off to have some fun. As long as you don't end up in prison, that is.”

Chryssa nods in agreement, and about that time the door opens and a messenger walks in. He's wearing apprentice robes, and carries with him a sealed scroll jar. He bows to you before speaking. “Mikhael Abdul-Hakim?” You nod, and he hands you the scroll jar. “From the Archmagos. No payment necessary.” With that he turns on his heels and marches out of the room, off to some other delivery you imagine.

I want to, again, suggest that before we kill the fucker and skip town we make sure that the wargaming idea we came up with will be greatly profitable for us. I think we need to invest some money into it so that we're the bigger name out there (getting advertisement, being able to rent out better places, hiring writers for lore, etc) and we need to legally start up a company or/and partner up with that other guy.

If we leave this as it is, we might lose a good opportunity to corner the market. I think about 50-75 gold investment would be enough.

You break the seal on the scroll jar and gently pull out the roll of vellum scroll. You unfurl it on the table and pin the four corners down with spare cutlery, your companions gathering around to get a good look.

At first, you're not sure what you're looking at. The ink is old and faded, and everything either seems to be some kind of mathematic formulae or an abbreviation you don't understand. Sure, you understand the basics. This is some sort of sprawling complex that stretches out over about a square mile of land. It's a palatial symbol of the government. You don't understand what anything represented in the picture actually is though.

Fortunately, Fulvia seems more on top of things. “It is interesting to note that architectural terminology has remained largely unchanged since the Rhynian Empire fell. Indeed, your societies in general seem to have either stagnated or regressed. This lends credence to my theory that only under a strong Imperial power can society advance.” Chryssa clears her throat gently. “Social commentary aside, you can understand this... gibberish?” Fulvia nods.

You clap your hands together. “Fantastic. Lord Spiros is the guy we're looking for. He's the steward, spends most of his time in his office and the attached bedroom.” Fulvia scans the paper for a moment before pointing to one room in particular. “This is the Steward's Office, and this-” She indicates an adjacent room. “-is the attached bedroom. There are three possible entries into the office proper. Two windows which face a sheer drop of approximately three hundred feet, and one door. There are two entrances into the bedroom. One via a balcony and the other the door from the office.”

>>31325470
Because we can buy shit as we go, plus travel expenses and bribes and new equipment a stuff for our people.

Money is useless if it's a thousand miles away.
>>
Profectus had the foresight to fetch a quill and ink. Fulvia uses them to mark the entrances and exits, as well as outline the steward's office, bedroom, and balcony more clearly. She then goes on to mark three large Xs. One immediately off of the large, central rotunda. Another a few halls down from his office, and the last over a spiral staircase. “If Lord Spiros were to take the most direct route to his office, these would be three possible points of ambush. Each is isolated and unlikely to be frequented by others, since the entire floor that the Steward's Office is one is reserved for his personal attendants, quarters, necessary facilities, and the treasury vault.”

It's not a matter of trust but there could be some events where we lose our money for one reason or another.

Oh, I quite agree. The most we should invest would be 1/4th of our money. And that's the most, we'll probably invest much less than that.
>>
>>31325795
Much less.

Small investments.

Plus it's not like it's an expensive buisness to start, just need a room (the academy will lend one to the Professor) and scribes/writers. Pretty cheap. And we have a partner.

No one dies but our target, and maybe his cronies, but even they're better paralyzed as long as we keep our face covered.

“Wait wait waait a minute, did you say treasury vault?” Profectus nods his head in agreement. “Treasury vaults are relevant to my interest as well.” Chryssa frowns. “Can we not rob the city for all it's worth? I feel bad enough about killing one of its rulers, robbing them on top of that would just be too much.” Profectus waves his hands placatingly. “Hey, who said anything about robbing? It's just something to keep in mind. Maybe we won't even bother checking on it?”

While she's busy glaring at Profectus you clear your throat. “I suppose you three should know why we're killing this guy. He's been embezzling money to fund a mercenary army, which he plans to have attack the city and burn the lower quarters to the ground. All in a ploy to seize control of the artifacs in the Academy Vault.” Profectus stares at you for a moment, before nodding. “Very well, I have no qualms with robbing this city blind. It would be for their own good, yes?”

You nod, and look to Fulvia. She is smiling bemusedly with one hand covering her mouth, holding back laughter. “Hmm, if you're done drooling over money I can explain the vault further.” She points to a series of one-letter annotations and some kind of technical schematic in the corner of the blueprint. “This details the locking mechanism. It's a three foot thick steel door only unlocked by an enchantment in the Steward's necklace. We'd need to get that off of him before any attempts could be made on the vault, and all that aside it's sure to be heavily guarded.”
(1/2)
>>
Profectus speaks up. “Well, the vault door might not be a way in, but does it have an external wall?” Fulvia studies the blueprint for a moment before nodding. “Yes, it does. One stone wall reinforced by internal steel beams.” Profectus holds up his stone hand, a grin spreading across his face. “I can burn through that, no problem.” Fulvia seems to consider this a moment, and then looks once more at the blueprint. “That could work... it is not a load bearing wall, so you could blow it up without consequence. Of course, it would alert the entirety of City Hall of our presence, and leave very obvious signs that the vault was robbed.

>How do y'all want to go about this? I'll open this up to discussion, then host a vote over the proposed ideas.
>>
>>31325914

Then we'll meet up wit tha others at a pre-de-termined location near tha city hall, awright? A pre-de-termined location. We'll need ta find a way onto the room, cuz that way we can slip down onta that there balcony an' get to the vault. Once we're inside, we kill the guards, sod your uncle, knip the kippers, and you're done.
>>
>>31325914
Let's not alert the entire city that they're being robbed.

We dont need to rob him. Killing him without drawing any suspicion on us is whats important.

He'll feel safe there.

I don't really like the idea of robbing the vault, too many variables.

What if any of us is identify?

How do we get enough of the money out of the vault for it to be worthwhile but not make us the obvious suspects?

Couldn't the archmage be piss if we rob the city?

I am not saying we forget about it, but killing our target and waiting a few months before robbing the vault could be wise.
>>
>>31326471
>If Lord Spiros were to take the most direct route to his office, these would be three possible points of ambush. Each is isolated and unlikely to be frequented by others, since the entire floor that the Steward's Office is one is reserved for his personal attendants, quarters, necessary facilities, and the treasury vault.”

This is why, personal attendants don't move around at night

Alright. I'll do it this way.

>Wait for him to leave the bar OR the Golden Cat. Try to find a way to hit him en route to the City Hall
>Sneak into the Golden Cat and kill him while he's with company.

>The vault isn't worth it, just kill him and get out.
>Kill him, loot the body, use the necklace to get into the vault.

Things like looting his office, whether you kill or subdue the guards, and the rest can be decided at the time.

Other options will be when it's light out, and it will mean we are much easier to detect. We kinda stand out too, so eyewitnesses are likely to point out to the new water master that has just left town quite easily.
Night makes it harder for us to be identified even if some things go unexpectedly and there are eyewitnesses. Also, our cloak makes us practically invisible in the dark.
>The vault isn't worth it, just kill him and get out.
>>
>>31326747
>Guards bro, plus he'll be all decked out in magic equipment.

OK, how do we get to the roof? Being seen is not that much of a problem with our need cloak but it only works for one person.
>>
>>31326785
You though we would be going on this assasination as a group? Others will provide back up and cover as needed. You dont go to an assasination with a group of four together.
>>
>>31326785
We could use Earth to make handholds in the stone to scale,

Or just latch on with Vys.

And we only need one person.

Or we kill him and then signal to the others via brooch on whether or not to come.
>>
What does channeling Earth Vys through our Armor do?
>>
>>31326841
oh yeah, we should take few moment to try to make the broochs work with fulvia.

Here is my idea, ensure he goes home that night drunk as fuck, use our armor and earth Vys (test it first) to climb the building at night (Check the building at night to chose the appropriate spot to climb). Get to the balcony use paralysis and poison him on him and then hold a pillow to his face.
>>
>>31326899
If not, she will need to stay with another person throughout the operation so that everyone can communicate.
>>
>>31326932
or just cut his throat.

Magic items tend to defend against magic.

So best to cut his throat quick and loot the room.
>>
>>31326932
We should rummage through the place and take some stuff otherwise they'll wonder why he was killed
>>
>>31326932
>use paralysis and poison him on him and then hold a pillow to his face.
If we could get that close, it's better to just prevent him from shouting and cut his throath for a quick death.
>>
“Fulvia, is there any way onto the roof from the outside?” She scans the blueprint briefly, and then shakes her head. “Not indicated on this blueprint, but surely window ledges and protruding stones will allow you to climb the wall to the roof. Earth magic would also make it a simple task, if you know any. Finally, there are ways up to the roof from the inside, via maintenance corridors here-” She draws an X over a narrow hallway, circling a stairwell. “-and here.” She draws another X and circles another stairwell. “However, the maintenance corridors are only accessible from inside City Hall.”

“I think I'd rather just use Earth magic. I'm not great with it, but I should be good enough to create hand and footholds.” Fulvia nods. Profectus looks up. “And the vault?” You sigh. “We'll decide after I kill the guy. If it's too much trouble, it's too much trouble. We're not going to possibly compromise the mission or put ourselves overly at risk just to get rich... well, richer.” He looks a little disappointed, but doesn't say anything. Chryssa nods her head approvingly, then speaks. “So what should our next move be? We have the basic idea, sure, but we need to prepare.”

>First, we need to buy supplies. Rope, sleep darts, blow guns, or anything else we might reasonably need to pull this off.
>First, we need to scope this place out. Get a tour of the facilities, try to get a look at the Steward's floor and the vault, and especially the balcony we'll be trying to climb to.

And finish our other arrangments
>>
>>31327168
Yeah, Chryssa and Fulvia would be good for spotting potential entry points/scouting. Profectus and us seem to be better at the illegal stuff.
>>
“I think our first priority should be supplies. We can scout City Hall later. The Archmagos really wants this done by the day after tomorrow.” Everyone nods, but Profectus raises a good question. “Should all of us really be going to buy supplies? I think if we made a list and gave it to one person, I'd recommend myself, they could probably handle it. Then Fulvia or Chryssa, or both, can go and scout out City Hall, and you don't have to expose yourself before you kill the guy. It'll keep suspicion off of you, and neither of us are tall dark-skinned long-eared elves.”

Well, besides the rather irksome comparison of Samja to elves (You're not at all similar to those inbred, quarrelsome, backwater idiots), it might be a good idea. You don't really know what you want yet, but just some brainstorming should solve that issue.

>You'd rather go as a group to buy supplies, you won't really know what you want until you see what's available, and the more prepared you are the better.

>>
“That's a good point, we should definitely split up the work load.” You look between Fulvia and Chryssa. “Would either one of you like to volunteer to scout out City Hall?” Chryssa nods her head. “I think I would be better suited to scouting out City Hall. While Fulvia is certainly competent, if her projection flickers or somebody looks closely and notices it is a false image, she may end up in danger.” Fulvia nods in agreement. “That is reasonable. I will go with Profectus to ensure he does not blow all the money that is meant for supplies.”

Profectus draws himself up. “I would never! I might like to have a good time but I wouldn't dare endanger a mission just so I could get my rocks off or make a little money.” You motion for him to calm down, and he huffs. “Relax, Profectus. It couldn't hurt to have an extra pair of hands with you while you're out shopping. Now, what do we want to put on the list of things to buy?”

A few obvious ones are knocked out. Rope, a grappling hook, if you're going to rob the vault you might want some way to subdue the guards without killing them, though it's not entirely necessary. Profectus wants a mask of some sort, since Chryssa has her Elaudian Death Mask, and you have your helmet and fancy cloak. Fulvia brings up that your armor is rather distinctive, as our your Master's Robes, and suggest it might be better if you left you packed your armor and robes. If you did, it might be wise to buy some cheap leather armor or some sort of protection, just so you're not left defenseless.

>Suggestions for what to buy?

“Alright, so I think a mask for Prof would be good. You're the one out shopping, so get whatever kind you want. As long as you can easily conceal it.” You're reminded of tribal mask from your homeland, often huge slabs of elaborately carved wood depicting images of local myth. Knowing Profectus, he would totally buy something like that for a job specifically requiring stealth.

“Other than that, the rope and grappling hook. Some sleeping powder, maybe?” Fulvia nods. “That would work, there is likely some sort of ventilation in the vault room. Or we could blow it under the crack of the door.” You nod, and it gets added to the list. “Sleep darts too, and a blow gun. Just so we have a back up.” Those are also added to the list. “Do you think you could get me some cheap leather armor? Just pre-made stuff. Doesn't even really need to be fitted. I don't want to risk exposure if something happens and my cloak pops open. Other than that... maybe a small extra knife?” Chryssa butts in here. “Don't you already have your sword, spear, dagger, pistol, and that compact sword thing?”

Point, you're pretty well equipped.

Leather armor gets added to the list, and Fulvia does some quick math before delivering a figure. “I think ten gold should more than cover the cost, any remaining after the purchases are made will of course be returned to you.” Profectus pulls the bag of money he and Fulvia won off that card game. “Nah, I'll cover supplies. I'm feeling generous after winning all that money.” Fulvia rolls her eyes. “After I won all that money.” Profectus nods brusquely. “Right, what did I say?”

You count out ten gold and pass it to Chryssa. “I can't imagine a tour will cost more than a few silver, but the rest is for any bribes you might need to make. Try to get a look at the Vault, and the Steward's Floor in general. Hell, if you can get a look at the office that would be great.” She nods her head, and gets up to leave. “Oh! And make sure to check escape routes too, after the tour ends, that is.” She nods once more and heads for the door.

You head over to where Fulvia and Profectus are chatting (Mostly Fulvia cautioning him not to start blowing his money), and pull one of the communication brooches from your bag. “Hey, Fulvia. I bought these things off of-” She interrupts politely. “Off of Sadik, yes. Though I was in the Breacher Morph I was aware of what was happening.” You nod your head. “Right, I was wondering if you knew anyway to make this work with you. Since, you know, they require a drop of blood to attune someone to the network.”

She reaches a hand up to rub her chin, it's still weird that the 'hand' seems to pass through her 'chin', the projections clipping through one another. “Maybe, if it made direct contact with my Core I may be able to force my way into the network without actually attuning myself to the brooches.” The projection drops, and you note that most of the damage she had on her hands and forearms two days ago is gone. The panel on the back of her head that holds the core slides open and she turns around so you can access it.

“Merely touch the brooch to the crystal, and I'll upload a fork of myself into the network.” You're a little hesitant, mainly because you don't know what the hell she's talking about, but you go through with it anyway. You see Profectus wince, right before you get a splitting migraine yourself. It last for a few seconds before dissipating, and you stuff the brooch back into your bag. “What was that?” You ask Fulvia as the panel on the back of her head slides closed.

{Language! That said, I agree.} Chryssa adds.

Fulvia's projection returns, and she turns to face you with an apologetic smile. “Sorry, my bad.” You shrug. “Ah well, no harm done really.”

After the two of them have left, you retreat to your bedroom and whip off your Void Cloak. You lay the garment out on the bed, smoothing it out on the sheets. You remember that you were able to slip your hand seemingly inside the fabric when the Vault Guardian first presented it to you, so the first thing you do is try to replicate that. You press your hand against the fabric, and slowly you feel it slip inside. It's like pushing your hand through mud, and it feels incredibly cold on the other side, but still. The uses for this are innumerable.

You pull out a silver coin, pushing it into the fabric of the cloak. It slips inside much easier than your hand did, and you let it fall all the way inside. The surface of the cloak almost seems like some kind of liquid, it's really rather neat. After waiting a few seconds you reach for the same spot and try to pull out the coin, finding your fingers grasping it as soon as they breach the barrier of the cloak's fabric.

Next you drop the coin once more into the cloak, and reach into an entirely different portion of the cloak to try and pull it out. Once more, you find it in your fingers as soon as you reach for it. You repeat the process a few more times just to confirm that no matter where you reach, the item you want will always come right to the surface. You also try dropping in both a gold and silver coin, and reach first for the gold, then for the silver, then for both. Each time the coin you wanted was grasped as soon as you closed your fingers inside the cloak, or the two coins were wherever you reached for them.

So you've confirmed that you can store small items in the cloak, that you can retrieve the items, and whatever item you reach for is the item you'll end up pulling out of the cloak. What do you attempt next?

An idea keeps running through your mind. What if you stuck your head through the fabric? Maybe there is something inside besides just empty space, or a storage facility for gear? Maybe this is some kind of portal to another world, or an entirely different type of existence. Who knows what might live in the void? Or could the void just be some kind of space between worlds?

You swallow your fear, and place your head against the fabric. There is a little resistance as you push yourself inside, but once you get past the nose it's pretty easy. You open your eyes once you've gotten your head entirely inside, smiling triumphantly and looking around.

You're immediately regretting this decision. For one, there doesn't seem to be any air inside this cloak. It's a perfect vacuum, and just grinning it felt like the air was being sucked out of your lungs. The other reason this was a bad idea is 'staring' at you with its weird hole-filled face. It's what you would describe as a masculine figure, very muscular. Its upper body is some sort of semi-transparent mass with ethereal tentacles branching out from its back, neck, and the backs of its arms. Its legs have calcified completely, made of some sort of hard stone. Meanwhile its hands end in claw-tipped fingers that are just entirely too long.

It seems perfectly impassive, merely starring at you with its hands at its sides. It doesn't seem hostile at all, but it still creeps you the fuck out.

You stare at the creature for a few moments, and it continues to stare back at you. You think. Maybe. Eventually you smile. Its 'face', or roughly where its face should be, splits down the middle. It slides open to reveal a gaping vertical slit of a mouth, a beak sliding out of the gap and clacking soundlessly a few times.

Alright, that's pretty creepy. You try to think something at him, to see if he can read your mind. He must be able too, since he always knew exactly the item you were reaching for. You're sort of drawing a blank on what to think at him though, what is one supposed to think at some sort of horrible abomination? You doubt they speak Rhynian or Samjan or any other language the people of your planet speak.

{Hi.}

A rather weak introduction, but it was the best you could think up.

His response is an unintelligible screeching that seems to worm its way into your brain, echoing and repeating itself in some horrible feedback loop of noise. You think your ears would be bleeding if his thoughts were not being beamed directly into your head. You jerk back, away from the cloak. You end up floundering, one of your hands slipping into the cloak instead of helping you pull your head out. Eventually you rip your head free, stumbling back and gasping desperately for air.

Gods, you can still hear the shrieking. It ends up taking several minutes to subside, and you already had a horrible headache before shoving your head in there. Now it hurts just to sit still with your eyes closed in a dark room. Still, it didn't really seem... hostile. Just incompatible with your physiology and thought patterns. Then again, maybe that shrieking was some kind of attack and it just tried to kill you.

You feel some sort of a strange affection for the strange, not really all that little, abomination. Maybe you should come up with some kind of name for him? Perhaps Cloaky, or Ricky? Maybe Pedro, for some foreign flavor? Umbra, as a nod to Rhynian myth? You can decide later. For now you decide to start cramming your stuff in there. You start with the weapons first, shoving them in hilt-first to make sure the cloak doesn't get torn. Your spear, both of your swords, dagger, staff, and pistol slide in easily enough.

Then you start emptying out your other gear. Your oud slides in as easily as a stone through water. A length of rope, a lantern, a mirror, the vial of spice, your container of lantern oil, the ornate lockbox where you keep most of your money, and the unused communication brooches all fit no problems. After that you dump the contents of your tool kit inside, the crowbar, hammer, and lockpicks fitting easily. Finally you start shoving in books. You fit what really amounts to a small library inside, and there seems to be no sign of any limit to the amount of stuff you can store inside.

You next go to the kitchen and start digging through the pantry for some kind of meat Ricky, you think that's what you'll call him since it can be short for Void Dweller in your native language, could eat. He has a beak, so you think meat or fruit would be a safe bet. Leafy greens might be a bit difficult. In the end you decide on a few raw chicken breast. That'll probably be good for him. You drop them into your cloak and they slip inside without issue, not even leaving a grease stain on the fabric.

You kind of want to cram a few more things in there. Maybe a chair, and a book case, or some shelves at least. That said, it probably wouldn't be wise to steal from the Academy. Especially not before you've killed Lord Spiros. The Archmagos asked you to kill someone after you disappointed him, you'd rather not find out what he ask of you if you make him angry. Instead you decide to try a few more experiments.

First, you reach into the cloak and try to pull out one of your blades, mainly just to make sure you won't be cutting up your fingers. You're pleased to see that Ricky understands what end of a blade to hand to you, and you pull your dagger out by the hilt. Then you try pulling out both of your swords at the same time, and find that it only works as long as you use two hands.

Then, you try channeling a little vys into it. It flickers for a moment, for just an instant the inside layer and outside layer of the cloak switching places, and some of the sheets get sucked into the cloak, but you start to feel really dizzy, like you might pass out at any moment, and you're forced to cut off the channeling before anything really happens. It seems like it does something, you just aren't powerful enough at the moment to see what it is.

Next, you try a simple fire spell on the cloak to see what happens. A burst of flame shoots from your hand, only to wink out of existence as it gets close to the surface of the cloak. You try some water magic, and once more as the water cascades towards the inner surface of the cloak it winks out of existence. You get the feeling it converts spells into raw vys and then sucks the raw vys into the void.

I find it funny how our character is is a mega jew, but also reckless as fuck.
Also am i the only one that noticed that in last thread we understood Hayes perfectly, and even smiled creepily at the students like he did when we first met him?
>>
>>31331164
I wonder what made us crazy, if it was the spice or the mask.
>>
On a hunch, you flip the cloak over and try to press against the other side, what would be the outer layer. While you find it intensely hard to focus on the outer layer for more than a few seconds at a time, it is otherwise mostly mundane. As much as you poke, prod, and shove your hand won't slip inside. Looks like only the inside of the cloak will work for storing items, absorbing magic, and eating projectiles filed at you.

You whip your cloak back on dramatically, pinning it closed at the collar with your communication brooch. You leave your belt pouches, Hiacian Courier's Bag, and tool kit on the bed. You don't have nearly as much use for them anymore, now that you have your cloak. Then again, maybe you can give them to Ricky as organizational space, or keep them as back ups in case you ever can't wear your cloak somewhere. You shove a sheaf of paper, a stoppered inkwell, and a quill pen into your cloak before setting off to find Demetrios.

You start off looking in the library, since that seems like a pretty good guess as to where he'll be. When that turns out to be a dead end, you check the sparring grounds to see if he's meditating there. Unfortunately, the sparring ground is empty. Not even that little racist kid who's shoulder you broke and healed is punching the sand bag. You look around the academy in a little more depth, checking a few classrooms and exploring the grounds, but he seems to have vanished.

Well, he'll turn up eventually, right? You'll wait for him in the library. Maybe take a nap. Then again, if you're going to be hanging out in the library, you may as well go see the Archmagos about getting into the private section reserved for faculty and certain students. Maybe he'll even give you another discount? You turn around and head for the stairwell at the back of the entry hall, breezing right past the front desk without bothering to ask if the Archmagos is available. He's been pretty available every other time you visited, after all.

This time is different. Instead of just happily waltzing on by, one of the women at the front desk calls out to you. “Sir! Excuse me, sir! You can't go up there, the Archmagos isn't in his office!” You stop, and turn around to face her. “He's not? Where's he gone?” She clears her throat softly, repeating as if from rote. “The Archmagos has gone to his private estate, he intends to spend the next few days in deep meditation and fasting.” You sigh. “Well that's all well and good, but you see, I'm a friend of his. I was hoping he might let me into the Private Section of the library...”

The woman quirks her eyebrow. “Sir, aren't you a Master? Masters are allowed into the private section by default, and make keep up to two books rented indefinitely, at no charge.”

>Oh, hell yeah! Why didn't somebody tell you this sooner.

“Oh, shit.” Is your gut response. You say it without really realizing it. The woman looks confused. “Why didn't somebody tell me this sooner? I need to get to the library!” You turn about and start heading back towards the library. Seriously, that's a great deal. Two books for free, and no time limit for when you need to return them? Now you're getting somewhere.

It occurs to you the Archmagos is probably out of town to give himself an alibi. If you fuck this up, he wasn't even in town. He's probably one of the only other Samja in the entire city, too. Then again, there is that Lord Rahat character. He's a Samja, and he's one of the other Lords. In fact, come to think of it, besides that family of tanner-

Your thoughts are interrupted by a collection of chicken bones clattering to the floor around your feet. You look down, confused for a few moments, before remembering you shoved some raw chicken into your cloak as food for Ricky. It looks like he enjoyed it, at least. Though you hope that doesn't happen every time you give him something it eat. It would be really weird to just have bones falling out of your clothing in the middle of a conversation.

When you breeze into the library, the librarian nods her head to you in greeting. She doesn't ask any questions as you walk directly to the Reserved Section of the library, your fingers closing around the handle to the iron gate that bars you entrance. You feel a little giddy. All this knowledge, right there for you to peruse as you please. It's like Christmas come early.

What will you look for first?

Friendly Reminder about magic.

>Spells can be countered by using the same or a similar effect as the one cast in conjunction with the Manipulate effect.
>So, if the MC were paralyzed, they would need to use Manipulate Paralysis to counter the spell.
>The exception are elemental spells. Fire is countered by Water (and vice versa), Nature is countered by Earth (and vice versa). Metal has no known direct attack spells, and thus no counter.

>The MC regains Vys by sleeping, but regains it faster by meditating.

>The MC's max vys pool can be permanently or temporarily lowered. Usually a temporary penalty to max vys will become permanent after enough time has passed, but a particular string of bad luck or a particularly bad decision might cause permanent damage immediately.
>Usually temporary vys pool reduction is removed after you remove the cause, be it an artifact, a wound, or an effect.

>Positive temporary vys points can also be earned by particularly good decisions or particularly good luck. They work much the same way, and don't recharge after being spent.

>Nature: Controlling vines, encouraging plant growth, certain extrasensory effects.

>Fire: Almost entirely direct attack spells. Ignite flammable objects with a touch, hurl fireballs, ect.

>Earth: Manipulating the ground, creating pillars of stone, sinkholes in the sand, hurling
boulders. Also useful for debuffing others, corroding their armor, ect.

>Metal: Defense spells. Making yourself hardier, warding off mental effects, fortifying armor.

>Water: Mostly healing and buffing spells. Knit wounds together, stop blood loss, remove exhaustion. A few attack spells if near a water source or at high levels.

You decide to start browsing through the private journals first. You had good experiences with Grandmaster Rostam's journal. As you peruse the stacks of books, something in particular catches your eye. A title wrought in faded gold on the back of a thick, leather bound tome. It looks like every stereotype of a big spellbook you could imagine, and the title is even written in Classical Rhynian.

You pull it off the shelf, trying to get a look at the faded binding to get an idea of the title. It just reads 'Excidium'. If you're recalling correctly, that means something like 'Demolition' or 'Destruction' especially in terms of a military defeat. Cracking the book open to the inside cover shows you the name of the author and the dedication. 'Florus Vincius. For my beloved.'. Reading the first few pages doesn't reveal anything of any great value, some interesting insights into every day life a thousand years ago, but other than that it seems totally undeserving of its ominous title. Maybe in the later portions of the book something ground breaking is revealed?

With that book tucked under your arm, continue onwards to where they keep some of the more complex, detailed books on Elemental magic. You initially hang out in the section devoted specifically to the Samjan language, but when nothing really catches your eye you move on to the older Rhynian tomes. These all have very technical titles. Things like “Breaking the Ninth Barrier: Fire Magic and You”, or “Abusing Metaphysics As If They Were Your Serving Girls: Tips for Meditating on Metamagic”. Both of which are significantly shorter in Rhynian. In the end, you pick up both.

Sitting in that chair and getting stabbed in the spine through the chest has really paid off, if only because you're able to speak Rhynian pretty well now. You snag both and tuck them under your arm.

No, you can go elsewhere for your sick thrills, also that doujin is horrifying in the extreme.
>>
After that you just sort of drift about, looking for anything that catches your eye. You end up in the section of the library reserved for books about effects. A few tomes in particular catch your eye. “Enhanced Interrogation Techniques: Pain, Poison, and Hallucinate” has a comically drawn picture of a man tied down to a chair naked with a bag over his head. “Utility Effects: Mark, Animate, Create, Confuse, Sleep”. You snatch both and tuck them under your arm.

With stack of books in hand, you take your prizes to a table and start sorting them out. First things first, what do you want to take as your two free borrows?

You collect your books and decide to check in with the librarian about prices. After all, you're a Master now! The least you deserve is a quick price check. When you set your collection of books down on the desk the librarian cocks an eyebrow. “Do you intend to buy all of those?” She ask, somewhat disbelieving. You shake your head. “No, I intend to borrow two of them indefinitely.” She glares at you. “Steal, you mean.” To which you respond by pulling your cloak open enough that she can see the golden Master's robes. “Oooh! Right! You're Mikhael right?” You nod your head. “Didn't you just see me walk in?” She puffs out her cheeks, stating indignantly. “There's more than one Librarian you know!” Then, more quietly. “I'll just... check the prices on these.”

After checking with a directory of some sort, she comes back with the prices. “Well, you've got expensive taste.” She then goes on to list the prices of each book, starting with the most expensive and then going down to the least expensive.

You pull the Excidium and Abusing Metamagic off of the pile. “I think these will be my two free borrows. As for the rest, don't you think eighty gold is an awful steep price for the books I've got?” She looks at you completely unamused. “Sir, the price is the price. We don't haggle at this institution.” You lean forward, flashing her a smile. “Oh, sure. I understand. We're not really haggling though! Just discussing my discount. You know, as a master vatis? Not to mention, I'm very good friends with the Archmagos. If you wanted, I could put in a good word for you...”

Oh yeah, that got her eyes to light up. “Well... maybe a... fifteen percent discount wouldn't be out of the question, in return for your recommendation that is.” You shoot back immediately. “Thirty percent and it's a deal.” She is completely out of her death. “Uhhh, twenty five!” You slam your hand on the counter, making her jump. “SOLD! For a twenty-five percent discount. I guess that brings it down to sixty gold then?” She stares at you wide-eyed and confused, you pass her the sixty gold and take your books, shoving them into your cloak. That really doesn't help her confusion at all, in fact now she just looks a little horrified.
>New Wealth: 1299 silver (64gp, 339sp); Very Wealthy, few things are out of your price range.

You decide to make your exit, and very nearly bump into Demetrios on your way out of the library. You both stop short, and he smiles. “It's good to see you again! So, I've been thinking over that business proposal of yours, do you have some time to talk?” You laugh. “Absolutely, I originally came here looking for you.” He looks apologetic. “Ah, I was out by the coast meditating. Apologies if you had to wait very long.” You wave him off, and the two of you take a seat at a table. He leans forward and speaks quietly. “Why is that librarian staring at you as if you had grown a second head?”

You wave him off. “Don't worry about it, now this business proposal?” He clears his throat. “Yes, right. I have thirty seven apprentices under me I can draft into the project as free labor to make figurines and write rulebooks. I think we got most of the basics hashed out that first night, rule wise. I just need some money to get copies of the books made professionally, and as start-up capital to get the game in shops, host public tournaments, that sort of thing. Build up interest, yes? The Archmagos will probably be thrilled to assist to some extent, but he will likely demand the game either be owned in part by the Academy, or that we pay him off.”

You nod along as he speaks, and once he's finished you get to the important question. “So how much do you think you'll need, to keep this enterprise independent. By the way, I'd like to get some documents written up and some words on paper as far as this partnership goes. Make it official.” He waves his hands, reaching into a bag at his side and pulling out a few bound sheets of paper. “Far ahead of you friend, I had a former student who entered law draw up a contract. All you need to do is sign the dotted line, as it were. As for the cost... I think twenty gold should suffice.”

I just don't get it look at all the shit we just went through and people still want to use it. I barely seen anybody look at the potential consequences only seeing benefits. Considering this shit isnt meant to be easy I see a lot of consequences. On topof that theres the whole thing that happend at the end of our trip with us almost pretty much being told that e was going to be skull fucked by the dead god. Does nobody see anything wrong with the way that shit went down? All I keep hearing is "MUH EXPERIMENTS, MUH GOD MODE"
Why keep doing this shit? It's basically part of his character now. He allowed his spine to be stabbed by an ancient machine, put on the mask from some death cult (or some shit I don't remember) and shoved his head in a vacuum. You take the contract and start reading through it, counting out thirty gold coins absentmindedly while you do so. By the time you've finished reading through the first time, you have them stacked nicely on the table. You read through it a second time just to be sure there isn't anything you might have skimmed over on the first read through. There are a few questionable clauses in the document. It's definitely geared to make sure you can't just saddle him with all the work, ditch town, and then turn up a few years from now to demand back payment.

One of the stipulations that it sets out is that 'Equal contribution must be made by both founding partners, lest the partnership dissolve and go to the more prominent partner.'. This is clarified a few paragraphs later with. 'Contribution may come in the form of monetary support, public promotion, manual labor (book copying, figurine creation, et. al.), and staff management.'.

Overall, it's a pretty clean contract. Still, it means he expects you to stop by pretty regularly and contribute to the project in some way. Even if that way is just in the form of giving him money, or playing a game in public to drum up interest in the game every now and again. Not overly difficult, but perhaps burdensome since you'll be traveling so much.

>Sign the contract. Give him one of the Communications brooches attuned only to yourself and him. You'll take up an advisory role.
>Sign the contract, you'll probably end up stopping by Anthus somewhat regularly anyway... assuming you don't get caught assassinating Lord Spiros.
>Sign the contract, you can play a few games every now and again to spread the game to foreign cities. Open up branch offices.
>Don't sign the contract, you can't agree to these terms.

We should give a chunk of money and hide it or ask someone to hold onto it for safekeeping, then later if he needs money we can tell him where it is.
