Let's see... news.

not much on that front, really. been planning a trip to Gettysburg this summer, I'd have liked to gone last one, but didn't get the time off, so. I'll keep you guys informed, but that'll be a week we won't run, probably in a month or so.

You have to hand it to the British sisterhood, they don't screw around when it comes to things they think are important. You got to enjoy maybe a two hour catnap after lady Dowding explained her plan, then you were up again, introduced to your partner for this job, a RAF witch apparently not needed anywhere else- you suspect there's a story there- handed your bags and given a short briefing on the thankfully limited number of formalities in this kind of thing. As it was explained to you, it's not a social call by any means and you should be spending more time in transit, by far, than actually on the ground stateside.

You were bustled into a car and driven to London Heathrow, still barely functioning as a human at that point, you were shown on board a British Airways 747 and allowed to take your seat upstairs in the first class section. You've got to admit, it's nice, though you're not sure you like it more than the front seat in the wyvern.

You'd revised that when you hit turbulence somewhere over the coast of North America. It wasn't that you were scared of the plane going down- big birds like this would practically have to be flying through a hurricane's eyewall to go down for weather- but that you weren't up front dealing with it. The lack of information- even when you knew, as a professional, you were fine and there was nothing to worry about- made you almost sick. You figure you were lucky your partner was asleep at the time- she only woke up when the main gear of the jumbo finally kissed the pavement at Washington National.

>>
The cabin crew hustled the two of you off the bird first- you could almost get used to the secret agent act, you think, except it would mean giving up the pilot's life, and you figure you'd waste away. With only carry-on luggage consisting, in your case, of one change of clothes and a book, plus the letter lady Dowding penned for matron Longstreet, the two of you were off well before the rest of the weary travelers on the 747.

Your check through customs was almost cursory, at best- though you're fairly sure your active duty navy ID helped. You're almost as sure that the agent on duty wasn't starstruck when he saw the name “Frank Bishop” on the card- you reflect you haven't really been in the civilian world at large since Tanana, just the brief trip with Katya, what seems like ages ago, in California. London, you figure, doesn't count, especially with the majority of your first day being spent either in the national gallery or with Rex.

You're fully awake by the time you two start heading down and out the doors, in the lead and moving with a purpose. “How are we going to get there?” The witch- one flight lieutenant Wendy Maloney- asks. “This is the first time I've ever been in the US.”

2/3
>>
“Well, traffic this time of day should be pretty similar to the front.” you say, glumly. “But I don't really see a better way of doing it.”

“I wouldn't know.” The witch responds, maybe a touch quietly- you might have hit a nerve. “I haven't been to the front either.”

You look over at her, surprised. The only witches you know who haven't been deployed are the matrons, and you've heard even a few of them have been to the front to get their combat card punched, as the saying goes. You want to ask, but now's not the time. Ground transport is in your hands, though you'll be repaid on your return to London, you're told.

[x] We'll hire a taxi from here. I'd rather not drive and I don't want to wait for a bird.

“Well, we can hire a taxi.” You say, heading for the curb. “I'd rather not drive, and I don't want to wait for a puddle jumper out to the municipal airport there. You got your bag?”

Maloney packed a bit heavier- she brought an extra duty uniform in addition to her change of clothes- but she nods, shouldering the battered British army pack.

She shrugs. “I found it in a supply closet. Seemed too useful to leave.”

You nod, filing that away- why's she got a beat up pack like that when she could probably just draw a new one from supply? Maybe the RAF's supply corps is strained a lot more than you'd thought with the war. It stands to reason, after all, there's RAF units in almost every theater of the war, and that's got to be putting a lot of demand on their supply chain.

You flag a taxi, the driver smiling when he spots Maloney's RAF uniform. “British?” He asks, and she nods.

“My father was a soldier with the 11th Sikh regiment.” He says, opening the trunk. “He fought against the invaders at Chennai.”

Your brain- operating a half-step behind, struggles to place the name. “Wait, wasn't that one of the major engagements where they got almost wiped out without witches?”

The man nods. “Yes! By the time the allied witches arrived, all that was left was to mop up.” He opens the doors for you, and Wendy slides in first. You follow suit, noting the interior of the taxi is clean and smells like air fresheners. Good enough, you suppose.

“So, where to, my friends?” The driver asks.

“Annapolis.” You say. “The naval academy.”

The driver pauses, then cranes around to look back at you. “My friend, that is a long drive, it will be expensive.”

“It's on the company dime.” You respond with a smile, pulling out the travel sheet.

The man smiles and nods. “Ah, of course! Well, it will be a drive, traffic is the worst I've seen it in many years. Maybe an hour and a half?”

“We're in no huge rush.” You assure him.

He nods, and the car smoothly slips into gear, merging into departing traffic.

Wendy's watching the city out the window, not quite wide-eyed, though her gaze lingers on the pentagon as it crawls by behind you.

[x] Talk to her. Don't know much about her at all, other than that name.

The witch next to you is quiet, so you're almost worried that she doesn't want to talk. Still, she's your wingmate going into this, and you'd rather know her at least a little better than just her name when you have to deal with Matron Longstreet.

“So, you said this is your first time in the states?” You ask, figuring it's a safe opener.

She looks back at you and nods. “Yes, sir. I don't usually get off base much.”

You grin at her. “Unless you want me to call you flight lieutenant the entire time we're here, you can drop the sir. I'm not in uniform and I'm on leave anyway.”

“Yes si- uh...” She responds, catching herself. “Then what should I call you?”

“Frank. Or Mister bishop, I guess, if you think Frank is too informal.” You tell her. “So why don't you get off base much? Too busy?”

1/2
>>
“Far from it. I get busywork all the time, but it's not that it takes me that long. It's just I don't usually get passes. This is the first I've had in months.” She says. “It's ok, I like the base. I spend a lot of time in the hangars, near the jets, like yours.”

“What about the strikers?” You ask- it's odd for a witch to find interest, let alone any kind of comfort, in steelwings.

She shakes her head. “I don't get to fly much. My strikers are on the bottom of the list for maintenance, and when another set goes down if they don't have a spare, they take it from mine.”

You narrow your eyes. “That's damn near abusive.” You say, flatly.

She smiles a bit. “It's ok, I understand. I don't have as much flight time as the other girls, and it's more important they stay in the air.”

“It's still screwed up.” You say. “So what do you do?”

“Oh, odd jobs. I help the armorers when I can, cleaning rifles and the like. Sometimes I help out down in the offices, or any work details.”

You're piecing the information together when suddenly it hits you.

“Wait.” You say, and you see her face fall. “You're related to that Maloney?” It'd explain the harsh treatment, at the very least. Trevor Maloney wasn't well thought of, and he's a laughingstock, even in the US Navy- how many senior RAF officers got run off the deck of a battlewagon by armed marines? All of one. The story spread far and fast, and the man was ruined, politically and socially.

She nods. “Y-yes. He was my grandfather. I suppose I understand if you don't want to talk anymore.”

“I don't buy into the sins of the father.” You say, somewhat tersely. “You aren't your grandfather.”

She looks at you, looking for some sign that you're joking at her expense.

“Shit,” you say, carrying on, “None of us are, thank god. They'd have me locked up in a psych ward if we were. My granddads were completely insane. What kind of strikers are you on?”

“T-tornados.” She says, hesitating. “You mean that? You don't hate me?”

“Why would I?” You ask. “What model?”

“The ADV.” She says. “Well, when it works. Sometimes I get sent to older models, but I'll take anything they'll let me fly. I can work with Tornados, or jaguars, or harriers. I've even flown your tomcats and eagles a few times when we hosted American squadrons.”

You quirk an eyebrow at that. “I thought witches had problems working with different strikers? Something about how they draw magic from you, or something?”

She nods. “Yes. Well, mostly. I'm sure whoever you talked to said it was different for all witches?”

You nod, remembering Ice's explanation.

“Well, I get a little headache that's gone in five minutes and I'm fine. Different models never bothered me much.” She says. “I've put in for liaison duty everywhere since the war started, but it's never been approved.”

“Oh really?” You ask, suddenly seeing a way to help the girl. “You have? How recently?”

“Last week.” She says. “I'm sure the paperwork is still sitting on the squadron commander's desk. Or maybe in the dustbin.”

So you're saying most people will be a dick to somebody because of something they never did and had no control over, and happened years before they were a twinkle in their fathers eye.
For no reason at all, in other words.

...

Yeah, I actually can believe that. Still doesn't mean this isn't complete shit. I mean, there's plenty of less contrived reasons, and if she winds up in Spellcaster I'm going to fly my "Strikerless Witch" boat into the fucking ground, because that would have resulted in the exact same circumstances, plot, and result without relying on my misanthropy. In addition, even! You could take the angle that her Father was -also- a buffoon, and incompetence runs in the family, as opposed to That One Ancestor.

[x] You know, Spellcaster doesn't have an attached Observer from the Royal witches yet. We'll talk to Ice when we get back, if that's ok. As much as the girls change strikers, you'll get along nicely, I think.

“You know,” You say, thinking for a second. “We don't have an observer from the royal witches yet. We'll talk to Ice when we get back, if that's ok.”

“Y-you mean that?” She asks, her voice betraying hope.

You nod. “Sure. As much as the girls change strikers, you'll get along nicely, I think.”

“It would be nice...” her face falls again as she thinks about it and shakes her head. “But the RAF will never allow it.”

“Even if it's us asking for you by name?” You ask.

She hakes her head again. “They'll just ask why you want me, and offer someone else.”

“Problem is,” you say, “We're asking for you, specifically. Not just an RAF witch, but Flight Lieutenant Wendy Maloney. Besides, Slider needs a partner in crime, the twins are starting to figure her games out.”

She shakes her head again. “They'll never agree to it. And even if they do, they won't let me keep my strikers.”

“Like we don't have spare sets everywhere.” You say, laughing.

“W-well. If you're sure, then, I guess.” She says, quietly. “But if you change your mind...”

“Why would I?” You ask. “Ice will agree, even if she doesn't know it yet.”

“She's your girlfriend then?” Wendy asks, then flushes a furious crimson and shakes her head, waving her hands in front of her. “No! No! Not like that. I- I mean, you two are that close?”

If anything, her flush gets even redder.

Counter-points:

Bren was an LMG; it was primarily used to engage area targets. The sights merely have to be good enough to have the bullets fall in the general vicinity of where you want them to.

The Owen was an SMG, whose very nature dictates it be used in very close quarters--which also doesn't necessitate sophisticated and accurate sights ala M1 Garand, K98, etc.

Those are niche roles compared to a general combat rifle--and in the case of the Bren, arguably better-served by a belt-fed gun.

For their intended purpose, the top mag messing with the aim wasn't a hindrance per say, yes. But all else equal, even then both the Bren and Owen would likely have benefited from an alternative positioning of the magazine.

Like hell. It was an unusual but deliberate design choice, much like the bulkhead that kept the action clear of debris. Of course, bottom-feed with the same reliability would be ideal, but no other bottom-fed contemporaries matched the Owen in Jungle warfare. Not the Sten, Thompson, Grease gun or whatever else.

It was simple, cheap, reliable and better than the rest.

[] We trust each other. That's what matters here.
[] That, my friend, is a very loaded question that could easily get me killed. She'll listen, leave it at that.

“That, My friend, is a very loaded question that could easily get me killed. We trust each other, that's what matters here.” you say, grinning.

“Oh.” The blood clears from her face somewhat, but she's still the most interesting shade of pink. “I'm sorry, I wasn't really thinking.” She says.

You laugh again. “That's fine, no harm done.”

“So how long are we going to be staying?” She asks.

“Not long, if we can help it.” You say. “I'd like to actually enjoy some of this leave.”

She nods. “I can't imagine you've gotten much rest. I won't mind if you take a nap, I'll wake you up before we get there.”

“I don't want to be rude...” you say.

She smiles and shakes her head. “of course not. I wouldn't consider it rude at all. I slept on the plane.”

You nod and shift around, trying to get comfortable. Eventually you manage to get yourself adjusted in a way that lets you fall asleep easily enough.

You're woken up what seems like scant seconds later by Wendy gently shaking your shoulder. “We're here, Mister Bishop.”

“Thanks.” you mumble, steeping out of the cab. You look back at the cabbie. “Can you wait here? We shouldn't be here that long, and we'll need a trip back to the airport when we're done.”

He grins and nods, looking only briefly at his watch. “I will wait here, then.” He says.

You're about to walk to the gate, when you're suddenly struck by the gesture of trust he's putting forward. Turning around, you walk back to the cab and put your bag back inside. “I don't expect I'll be needing that.” You say, reaching inside and pulling out the letter from Lady Dowding. “Just this.”

The cabbie nods, still smiling, as Wendy puts her bag back in as well. “I'd change, too, but it wouldn't be proper here.” She says, indicating the pants she's wearing.

“This place isn't a proper hold anyway.” You say, looking up at the grounds of the school- you graduated from here a scant few years ago, and still remember it like it was yesterday. “The witch's hall is where we're headed, but it's on the other side of campus.”

She nods. “I still feel like I should be bareleg.”

You chuckle at that, pulling your wallet out as the guards- you don't remember them here- stop you. Pair of active duty Marines, looks like, in dress uniform- though you don't doubt the rifles they carry are loaded. Wartime precaution, you're sure.

“Can I help you, sir?” One asks, holding out his hand while his partner watches you and Wendy.

“Probably not, marine.” You say, handing him your ID. “I'm Lieutenant Commander Frank Bishop, here on orders from her majesty's witches.”

The marine looks at you, then at your ID, then back at you, utter confusion all over his face.

You chuckle. “It's complicated. Long story short, I need to go break some bad news to the head matron in witch hall.”

The marine, examining Wendy's ID, nods. “I suppose you don't have written orders, sir?”

You shake your head. “Nothing of the sort. Will that be an issue?”

He hesitates, then shakes his head. “No, sir. You know how to get there?”

You nod. “Yeah, is it still over on the water?”

He nods. “Yes sir. Rip miller hall. They've expanded the airstrip some, be careful over there. They like to steal covers if they can.”

You laugh. “Yeah, that hasn't changed. All right, Wendy, you good?”

She nods.

2/3
>>
The marines let you through without any further questions, though you hear one say to the other “Holy shit, that was Frank fucking Bishop. You should have asked for a picture or something” His partner's response is lost to the intervening distance.

You elect not to go back and comment.

The campus is largely like you remember it, though you've come at an hour when everyone is in class, making the trip that much easier.

The building, built in the closing years of the war to handle the greatly increased attendance, sits along the water, near Triton light. Nearby, a single small hangar handles the academy fleet of training strikers- you and Wendy watch as two of the navy blue painted units roll out, the tinny sound of their propellers getting louder as you approach the hall. The training striker's sound is drowned out by the scream of a set of hornet strikers a minute later as an instructor follows her wobbling charges out to the runway.

You and wendy watch the three witches as they take off, Wendy shaking her head at the trainee on the left, who, as soon as she's airborne, swerves hard to her right, crossing just under her fellow classmate and causing her to climb suddenly.

“See that?” Wendy asks. “I'd have been drummed out if I did that.”

You shake your head, not surprised.

Inside, the witch at the desk gives you a surprised look. “Can I help you?” She asks.

British witch tradition, much like their political tradition, seems to consist of witches looking polite, regal and composed on the surface, but kicking each other in the knees under the table and subtly spiting each other with wordplay.

Their military used to consist of a rag-tag, questionably-equipped bunch of commoners being led around by obnoxious officers and long-suffering non-coms, ganging up on the next poor sod's army with the ally of the century, knocking them over, kicking them in the nuts and looting what they can like a bunch of murderhobos.

Somehow, they got so good at doing this that they accidentally founded an Empire that lasted centuries.

Rule Britannia.

The issue wasn't the transitional design, but in terms of reliability.

The M3 Lee would actually start up, go and remain in that mode far longer than the "Cruiser" tanks of the day. Do note that it wasn't until the Cromwell that the Brits had a somewhat reliable "cruiser" tank design. IN 19FUCKING44.

It was their navy that gave them their empire. The RN wasn't as horribly run as the British Army...plus, as Ice was explaining, witches really came into their own (at least navally) in the age of sail and shot where they could put a cannonball clean through a man-o-war. I imagine that the RN's increasing ascendancy over the years between 1715-1815 could be traced to their use of, and treatment of, witches...as well as the things that generally helped them in real life

[x] “Yes, I'd like to see matron Longstreet, please.”

You smile a sort of plastic half-smile, and nod. “Yes, I'd like to see Matron Longstreet, please.”

“May I see your ID, sir?” the witch at the desk asks. You nod, inwardly cursing the surprise will be broken. You look for the light of recognition in the witch's eyes when she sees your ID, and you're not disappointed.

“I- I had no idea you were coming, Commander Bishop.” She says, hastily standing up. “Would you like me to show you to her office?”

“That won't be necessary.” You say, taking your ID back. “Just tell us where it is, I'm sure we'll find it.”

She nods, then leans over the desk to point down the hallway. “Take the stairs at the end of the hallway, her office is right above the entryway here.”

You nod, heading up the stairs and knocking on the closed office door.

“Enter.” Matron Longstreet says in a commanding tone.

You open the door and step in the office, noting the old wood paneling- no doubt with some impossibly rich story, like they once furnished the hull and decks of some ship of war of the navy a trazillion years ago or something,

You hold the door open long enough for Wendy to step in, then close it behind you.

“Lieutenant commander.” She says, her voice betraying no emotion. “Come to your senses and decided to return to Annapolis so we can develop your abilities with Miss Wells?”

“It's Lieutenant Wells.” You say. “And no. I have a letter for you from Matron London, the Lady Dowding.”

Longstreet frowns, but accepts the letter.

“I am directed by Matron London, the Lady Dowding that in my capacity as guardian to the crown's witches I am to recover a footlocker of personal effects of Tabitha Kazinski, only living inheritor to the tradition of Ilyena Kazanski.” You say, struggling to remember the formal wording that Lady Dowding went over with you before the flight.

1/2
>>
“They went and did all this, just to spite me, eh?” Longstreet says, reading the letter and putting it down. “I Shouldn't be surprised, should I Miss Maloney?”

You look over your shoulder at the witch, who, you've noted, is at parade rest, her eyes caged and locked forward, fixed on the wall.

“It's actually kind of funny, Lieutenant Commander bishop.” She continues, tapping the letter against her desk languidly. “Oh, they have me cornered, no doubt, and you can take the damned footlocker with you, I'll have whoever's at the duty desk help you get it. I can only hope that, since you're so protective of Miss- excuse me- Lieutenant Wells, you keep her from hearing the casualty lists.”

You're about to retort, angrily, but you bite it back. Bitch won't get a rise out of you.

“But it's funny. You think I'm a bitch- oh, don't lie, I can see it in your face- because I was a bit rude to someone I didn't think could cut it on the front line. The entirety of the British coven has been making this girl's life a living hell, all because of who her grandfather was, and you're siding with them.” She chuckles, darkly.

“This is pure politics, Lieutenant Commander. The British coven is the largest and most powerful on earth. And they intend to keep it that way. Our tradition is young and fractured, with bloodlines from all over the world. Discovering the secret behind your and Lieutenant-” She stresses the word “Wells' ability would go a long way in creating a unified American tradition, and with it a totally independent coven.”

She shrugs. “This is a setback in that road, though. Nothing more. Take the footlocker, and go knowing that I'll probably never gain the resources necessary to ever be mean to you or your precious lieutenant ever again. I only hope you'll extend the same protection to miss Maloney there.”

Wonder what the Commonwealth matrons are like?

And when this is all over, history will look at Matron Longstreet and judge her. And it will judge her poorly.

She had the chance to be part of something really big, revolutionary stuff. But instead, she was That Guy whom the legends had to work against to get results.

And inside, Longstreet's sweating like mad as she watches Bishop just politely smile and leave.

"FUCK," she says to herself, "Did I come on too strong? Fuck, I came on too strong, didn't I? I fucked this one up. Oh god I fucked up so bad."

>>31355147

Bongland political manoeuvring essentially consists of being seen with the right people and being heard saying the right things at the right time.

Bishop's usually pretty solid on saying the right thing at the right time, and he seems to have a decent sponsor in British witch society.

Barring a huge upset, he should do fine.

> respond how?

“Thank you for your cooperation, ma'am.” You say, turning to leave. You open the door just ahead of Wendy, allowing her to step through and closing it behind you with a final click.

“That went about as well as I expected.” you say, heading downstairs.

“Matron longstreet called. There's your help.” The witch at the desk- all pretense of friendliness gone, points at an upperclassman- a witch no more than fifteen. She looks back down at her desk, making it clear you're dismissed.

You shake your head at Wendy, who looks at the young witch- clearly torn between awe as she realizes who you are and disgust. The three of you make the trip to the storehouse in silence, though you notice some midshipmen out between classes shooting you glances- and by the looks, some of them recognize you.

The footlocker, when you find it, is almost anticlimactic. A simple, badly faded OD green wooden footlocker with the faded legend “US Army Airforce” on the lid, along with Ice's grandfather's name, rank, unit, and serial number.

The lock on the front looks old- and you're worried you'll have to take a pair of bolt cutters to it later when the witch ducks into the supply offices and steps out a minute later with a badly yellowed envelope.

“Here.” She says, thrusting it into your hands, and turning to leave. “If we're done, I'm going to be late to class.”

She doesn't wait for a response before leaving.

You and Wendy carry the foot locker out of the gate between the two of you, finding, to your relief, the taxi is still waiting, true to the driver's word.

“Ah, my friends! Here, let me help you!” he says, taking the footlocker from you and putting it in the back of the taxi. “Traffic should be much thinner on the way back, I think we'll be on the road an hour, maybe. Perhaps if we can hurry we can have you in the air before the night is over!”

1/2
>>
He doesn't wait for a response, taking off down the narrow streets of Annapolis and back onto the highway.

“She really has them under her thumb.” Wendy states.

You nod. “Yeah, kinda makes me worried. There's a lot of the next generation of US navy witches she's working with. If she's got them all thinking like that....”

“She wasn't lying about spite though.” Wendy says, after a moment. “Though I don't think that was what made lady Dowding act like she did with you. I think she might have been telling the truth.”

“Either way,” You state. “Merlin hates her, and that's enough for me. That kid has saved my skin enough that I owe her at least that, and it helps that this means that the bitch can't blackmail Ice anymore.”

“Ugly business.” Wendy says, after a moment. You can't help but nod in agreement.

Your cabbie turns out to be a hell of a guy, getting a porter to help you with the footlocker. You end up tipping him generously after the fee, and, as you're walking in to the ticketing counter, he calls “If you're ever in Washington DC again my friends, call me! I will gladly drive for you!”

It's good to have friends, you think.

At the ticketing counter, you manage to get a pair of first class, one way tickets to London Heathrow aboard a US airways 747-400, one of the newest birds in their fleet. You're strongly tempted to send Wendy to make sure the footlocker is carefully loaded, but decide against it- traffic is slow enough you think the handlers won't be rushing.

You've got about an hour before your flight, and once you're through security- with the officer actually asking you if you were 'that' Frank Bishop- you've got a little time to kill.

Bitch is influencing them too much.

And this is the point where the wonders of the American press will struggle to paint Bishop and Merlin as traitors to their country, disgraces to the uniform and the next couple of Benedict Arnolds.

In the meantime, the British press will paint them as mistreated and misunderstood heroes working against an incompetent administration to win the war.
>>
>>31355989
They operate independently, but all of their magic and shit is based on British traditions. Frank and Merlin would have become the first major thing the Americans would have developed on their own; their first homemade major edge.

>>
>>31355973
That's their battle to fight, not ours. If they want(ed) our help, the best way to go about it wasn't via threats and blackmail to our squadron mates. Maybe if they made up and played nice Fronk'd be willing to reconsider, but so long as Longstreet wants to play the blame game, she can count on no support from Spellcaster's witches or gnome
>>
>>31356034
>have become the first major thing the Americans would have developed on their own; their first homemade major edge.
Aren't they already?

Unless you mean trying to pick their brains to replicate this success.

Don't forget, witches from all over are going to do this at Castle Barin. Longstreet wants to keep this to the US
>>
>>31356034
If we had been approached by someone who is a decent human being we probably would have said yes to researching after the war. Longstreet burnt the bridge she was trying to build by abusing our squadron.
>>
>>31355973
That's on Longstreet. If she had been competent enough to know to do her research on the people she was going to approach to figure out whether a hard or soft approach was best she might have actually gotten some cooperation. Instead she came in swinging her metaphorical dick in Spellcaster's faces expecting a free blow.

>>
>>31356010
>disregarding Merlin

Yes, because how the flying fuck was she supposed to know that Merlin could actually be of military use? Let's not sugar this up: Longstreet runs a military training regimen. Her job is to train witches to fly in combat. If a potential witch doesn't have what it takes, she's not going to be "nice" and let her continue on knowing full well she's not going to handle herself in combat.

What the fuck was she supposed to say? "Well, I know you can't operate strikers correctly, can't form shields to defend against incoming rounds even with a focus, and are basically useless in combat in the traditional strike witch role, but you can still be a strike witch!"?
>>
>>31356118

O'Hare was her name I think.
>>
>>31356118
O'Hare
>>
>>31356132
That was understandable - but not afterward, when Merlin proved she could be a good RIO.
>>
>>31356132
And let's not forget that Merlin's magical capacity didn't increase until AFTER Frank's gnome powers activated. She didn't really begin making huge strides in shield creation, technomancy, and her other abilities until after we had entered the Top Gun program.
>>
>>31356132
>>31356010
And as for "blackmailing" Ice, we see it that way because we already hated her. For all we know, her train of thought was "Hey! You know how you don't know much about your father's family? We might be able to help with that if you help us!"
>>
>>31356132
>What the fuck was she supposed to say? "Well, I know you can't operate strikers correctly, can't form shields to defend against incoming rounds even with a focus, and are basically useless in combat in the traditional strike witch role, but you can still be a strike witch!"?
It's called being 'nonconventional'.
>>
>>31356132
>can't form shields to defend against incoming rounds even with a focus
well thats just flat out wrong

and besides, a good military commander, in battle or training, makes do with what they've got and fully utilizes all of their assets, the fact that she couldnt recognize Merlin's abilities or find a use for her proves she's retarded
>>
>>31356160
>when Merlin proved she could be a good RIO.
You mean, when we, the players and Frank, tried to keep that information from getting out?
With the whole "don't tell anyone but Nixon and Ice" thing?
>>
>>31356160
>but not afterward

...you mean when Merlin effectively told her to go to Hell as soon as she saw Longstreet? That no matter what she said, she would *never* help her?
>>
>>31356127
The usual conundrum of taking super-effective personnel/units off the front lines for a potential gain in the future, versus keeping them on the frontlines and maybe being able to use them to win the war now.

Sure, they might learn something new from taking Frank and Merlin to the labs, but it may take years for that research to make meaningful breakthroughs and implement it safely and effectively in frontline units.

Then again, wartime needs are a good motivator for development. A huge breakthrough could happen sooner than expected.
>>

>>
>>31356189
>>31356184
Which she was and she did. Merlin got sent to be a RIO, even at her age. Longstreet was thinking in the Navy's best interests, not the Witches'.
>>
>>31356178
The way she said it, and to suddenly bring this into the table after messing with Merlin.

It wasn't a good idea.
>>
>>31356189
>the fact that she couldnt recognize Merlin's abilities
Merlin's abilities have never been seen before, and only manifested when in direct contact with a gnome, who wouldn't be at a Witch hold anyway.

Not to mention, that like's saying that a commandant should find something for everyone who enters Basic, regardless of whether they are actually fit for duty or not.

Merlin did not have enough magical potential to be able to power a pair of Jet Strikers; what is the Strike Witch program supposed to do with a Witch that can't power a pair of Strikers?

Gentlemen, your over thinking this argument way too much.

The fact we turned her down does not mean that that research will NEVAR ever be performed, it means that we're in a position to ensure it is performed by the right people, we hold the cards, so we can work with who we want and ensure its done properly and with due respect.

We can essentially go to any prominent Matron in the US and say "we'd like to do this research, but a couple conditions, 1, no Matron Longstreet" and bam, problem solved.

Stop thinking in absolutes and over thinking things.

“Well, let's go get some chow.” You say, indicating an open cafe with a tilt of your head. “I'm starved.”

Wendy nods, following behind you.

“So, what do you think is in there?” She asks, ordering a bacon burger and plate of fries. You get the same after a moment's thought, missing Santa's burgers all the while.

“Not a clue. I'm going to bet a lot of old family keepsakes and that sort of thing.” You respond.

Wendy shakes her head. “There's at least one focus in there.” She says.

You quirk an eyebrow at her and she looks down at the table.

“I mean- I felt it, when we were carrying the locker.” She says.

“You can do that?” You ask. “I didn't know you could do that. How far away does that work from?”

“O-oh. I thought you were mad. Just a couple of feet, really. Not even a meter.” She says. “It's taught in most academies, you know, for self-defense. But most witches forget how to do it, and can't.”

“But you didn't?” You ask.

>>
“I couldn't.” Wendy responds. “If I had, it would have been a 'necessary skill' and me not knowing it would have gotten me put in remedial training for weeks.”

She looks at her burger as the waiter sets it down, taking a sip of coke. “There's lots of little things like that, minor tricks and things that don't really need talent at all. Most witches don't remember them because they never use them, and it takes a lot more work to manifest a shield or run a striker and you're always too tired to use them afterwards. And before you don't want to because you want to be as fresh as possible.”

“But I never needed to go anywhere, so I still know them all.” She says, thumping the ketchup bottle over her fries. “But they're just parlor tricks, not really useful. They're taught to help girls get a handle on their limits, that's all. Outside of an academy they're nearly useless.”

You nod- that makes sense.

You're barely able to finish your burgers before your boarding call goes out- you have to hustle to make the gate, but you do, barely. You just hope you don't hit turbulence on the way back.

If that was her intent, her wording was entirely wrong. You all have a solid point about Merlin, even more so because I'm sure dealing with hormonal teenage girls in the military would be a nightmare, but her intention with Ice's stuff was 110% blackmail.

No. She was trying to bribe Ice into signing an order that would have allowed Longstreet to have Merlin & Frank turned over to her and taken off the front with the blackmail bit being that she'd never find out about her family otherwise.

>“No ma'am.” Ice responds, before you can. “But, frankly, I'm not inclined to sign off on any transfer she feels that strongly against.”
>“Tabitha, honey, you always thought with your heart, not your head. This could be as big for us as the magical engine was. Bigger, even. Think about it! How long have we been overlooking this?” Longstreet says, leaning forward. “How many people like mister Bishop here are there? How many girls like Samantha?”
>Ice shakes her head. “It doesn't matter. I won't sign the order.”
>Longstreet leans back in her chair. “I could open up the archives on your grandparents.” She says.
>Ice hesitates. “That's-”
>“Think about it, Tabitha. You'd finally be able to find out who you are. Certainly we're the last place with any records of it.”

Magical focus. It amplifies a Witch's magic and helps to convert it into mechanical energy.
It's what lets a Witch generate a shield that can stop .50 cal bullets, when without one they'd be hard-pressed to stop a 9mm.

A focus is a special device that is built into all strikers in order to generate shields. NORMALLY, you'd only find foci in strikers, but there are a rare few that are exceptions.

One is Red's bracelet, which lets her put up a shield while on foot.

The one inside the box is Ice's mother's wedding ring.

"Took you long enough," Chris was snickering as Holly entered the rec room on the barracks first floor. She wasn't the only one amused. The rest of the wing had been gathered, sitting wherever a chair could fit, or wherever that individual felt the most comfortable. It didn't look organized, but Holly could that the witches naturally had gathered in groups for each squadron.

"I had something to take care of!" Holly said defensively, making her way up to the podium that had been set up for her. There was a ripple of laughter from crowd.

Chris only shook her head knowingly, taking a seat among the girls of the Fighting Mudhens.

The 3rd Wing was going to be showing up at their designated area in force, escorting a mixed strike package that included Grenadine's 807th "Manaburner" squadron, and the Wild Weasel's of Colonel Wolcott's 992nd TFS. This was intended to help clear the way for additional air strikes that would hopefully keep the ground combat in the Army's favor.

The 3rd Witch Wing would then loiter over friendly ground forces until relieved by the 23rd Witch Wing. Elements of the wing would shift as necessary to help walk in additional ground-attack and SEAD strike packages, but for the most part the wing had been given a pass for an open hunting season on anything Russian.

Holly wanted two squadrons to stay at high-altitude, a reaction force that could assist either the strike escorts, or the more aggressive witches that would be actively countering Soviet aviation assets. It was an even, conservative distribution of her wing, but it gave her plenty of ways to react to what she predicted would be a very large counter-attack. The reds had many fewer witches spared to their Alaskan front compared to what was on display in Europe, so their best response now would be to try and overwhelm them with superior numbers of steelwings, who ideally would fall right into the waiting missile envelopes of the F-4s, F-15s, RCAF F-18s, and Arrows that would be on station.

The Mudhens would be one of the two squadrons assigned forward from the rest of the wing, the ones to greet the Russians at the door.

"If they come, we absorb their counter, pull 'em in, chew 'em up, and spit whatever's left back out," Holly concluded.

The greatest danger aside from getting shot at would be the nature of the battle on the ground. The Army was promising an impressive show of force, intending to push north with the goal of retaking Tanana. If the reds had their steelwings in the mix earlier than anticipated, Holly emphasized (almost pleaded) that her girls remembered to not get drawn too far ahead of the US advance. Few steelwings could beat a witch 1-on-1, and a common tactic on both sides was to drag the witch towards friends in the sky or on the ground. Even the best witches did not want to take on odds stacked that heavily against them.

It was thankfully a straightforward brief. This was the sort of thing they'd not only trained for, but there'd already been plenty of deployments of the wing on a similar scale. Save for the short notice it was nothing out of the ordinary. Intel on what to expect in the air was limited to the best guesses of people who weren't actually going out to fight, so Holly told her wing to expect everything and worse. That nobody knew where the flying carrier was at meant that there was a chance it could somehow be near Tanana.

That meant there'd be academy witches to watch for. The thought scared Holly, but also excited her.

With the informative part of the briefing over, Holly started taking questions from the crowd. Most of it was clarification on the sort of defenses the Russians had on the ground, where to go if damage to strikers meant Elemdorf was out of reach. The usual pre-mission jitters. After people started to openly speculate why one witch was asking for information about a particular tank in a particular company supposedly near where the 3rd Wing was assigned, Holly knew it was time to end the briefing.

"If nobody else has any questions..." Holly leaned forward against the podium. "You're all dismissed. Good luck tomorrow."

"U-um, Colonel?" A witch from the back the room asked timidly, struggling to be heard as the witches started putting the rec room back together again. "Are we absolutely confined to barracks now?"

"Well, crew rest is starting now, and yes we are confined to the barracks or hangar spaces... Security has been upped base wide..." Holly frowned. "I know this isn't what you want to hear, but it is what it is." The woman looked crestfallen, but she nodded with understanding.

"Yes ma'am..."

Holly squinted in thought for a moment. The room had gotten a bit quieter with that piece of news.

"If," she said, raising her voice so everyone could hear it over the din of chairs being moved around. "If it's not just a phone call home..."

Everyone looked at Holly, expectantly.

"IF, and ONLY IF, this is something that absolutely, utterly cannot wait-" She felt herself turning red as she spoke. "I... totally understand. And I didn't see you leave the barracks tonight."

Gasps of disbelief erupted from the crowd, followed by cheers. Somehow that was even more embarrassing to Holly.

"JUST BE SMART ABOUT IT!" she shouted over the crowd, hoping they heard her.

-

"That was unexpected of you," Chris grinned at Holly they entered their room. "Like on a scale of Not-Holly MacLeod to Yup-That's-Our-Sourpuss, that was like like a negative-"

"Sourpuss?!"

Chris laughed as she flopped onto her bed. Holly growled, taking one of her pillows in hand and debating how hard she should smack her XO with it.

"I'm just saying's you'd have never bent on something like that before! Ack!" One pillow strike, barely warded off by a forearm. "I mean if I don't see you back here for another couple hours I'll understand-" The rest was muffled out by a shot right to the face. Satisfied, Holly marched off to her own bed, turning her back on Chris as she lay down.

"I'm trying to be more flexible, that's all..."

"It's because you're worried about tomorrow, isn't it?"

"Who isn't?" Holly sighed.

"Well..." Chris sat up. "You've given us our assignments, you answered the questions presented. We're trained for this, we all have combat experience. It's about execution and luck now, and so far the wing's done well in that regard..." She moved over to Holly's bed and sat down next to her. "I mean, I'm worried, but I'm not, y'know?" She frowned, and started idly poking the back of Holly's neck. "I guess that really doesn't make sense, does it?"

"No, I get you..." She slapped Chris' hand away. "Stop that."

"Nope." The poking resumed.

"Did you call home?" Holly asked.

"Did you?"

"I will in a bit..." She slapped at Chris' hand again, spinning around in bed to face her. "Hey!"

"Look at me when we talk, geez."

"Stop makin' fun of me, then!" Holly snapped.

"You make it too easy!" Chris shot back. "So, did you go see Will?"

"Y-yeah."

"I knew it!" Chris hooted in victory. "Made some money!"

"You're *betting* on me and him now?!"

"You're the hot gossip these days, girl." Holly groaned at that description. "I could... cut you in on some of the action if you want?" Chris added sheepishly. Holly groaned louder, pushing Chris off the bed.

"Cut me in on 'never-betting-on-where-I-spend-my-own-damn-time-again', I'd prefer that."

"Spoilsport," Chris snorted. "There's the Holly I'm used to having around."

"She never left..." Holly pointed at the door. "Go get us some food."

"We just got here Eagle, if you were hungry, we were next to the kitchen for the last half hour."

"Go get us some sandwiches-" Holly paused for dramatic effect, mustering up the most evil grin she could. "Now, Lieutenant Colonel."

"Abuse of authority!" Chris wailed as she made her way to the door. "What do I get out of this?"

"I tell you what we talked about in the hangar."

It took Chris less than five minutes from the moment she sprinted out the door to return with sandwiches and soda.

>the Martians can see Barin from outer space.
They see it all the way from Olympus Mons, and consider it a declaration of war.
>>
>>31357112
I assume that the war ended in a kind of stalemate (with a slight human advantage) where the martians couldn't really acquire any new territory or reinforce what they had, but the humans couldn't dislodge the Martian defenses. It was probably a diplomatic peace, and neither planet wants anything to do with the other
>>
>>31357112
>Also why hasn't humanity glassed Mars yet?
Probably because the Martian planetary defense grid would vaporize any Earth ship attempting to enter Mars orbit, and they can send up defense shuttles with their mass driver.

"...And that's why I was late to the briefing." Holly mumbled, twenty minutes later and exactly two sandwiches fuller than when she started awkwardly describing her moment in the hangar with Will.

"Wow..." Chris blinked. "You two are friggin' adorable." Holly's response to was to hide her head under her pillow.

"G-Gawd..."

"You're that worried about tomorrow that you forced yourself to be honest with him, huh?" Holly pulled the pillow down tighter over her head, grumbling. "I'm pretty sure you didn't need to knee him in the sto-"

"Shaddap!" Holly was on her feet in an instant, interrupting her friend with a perfectly thrown pillow to the face.

"So you two are a thing now?" Chris asked as the pillow fell towards the floor.

"I-I think so," Holly stammered. "I had to tell him how I felt! We don't know what's gonna happen tomorrow."

"Nothing to you, if I have my say." Chris said, suddenly very forceful.

"Stop stealin' my lines, you." Holly punched her weakly in the shoulder."Seems like a fairly straightforward operation, it's the sort of stuff we learned about at Red Flag. Hell, this is like Tanana Part Three: Tanana Harder, when you really think about it. Just can't count on the Russians to follow the rules of the scenario." Holly laid back on her bed, staring at the ceiling. "I'm... I've always been nervous before combat, m-more for you and everyone else in the wing, you know? Now I'm worried about seeing him again... Worried about getting hurt, or-"

"I'd tell you not to think about that stuff, but you can't help yourself. Cut that shit out," Chris snapped. "You're not gonna be able to sleep if you treat this like anything more than another day at the office, Holly."

"Riiiiight..."

"Besides, it's not like you're three days from retirement-"

"Oh come on," Holly huffed.

"It's not like we're giving you pineapple salad before take off."

"It's not like medical called to tell you that your wife's baby boy is perfectly healthy and you can see 'em tomorrow-"

"How would that even work?!"

"It's still good that you said what you said to him, even though nothing's gonna happen to you." The blond reached over and crushed Holly in a hug. "It'll be fine."

"Uh huh..."

"I've gotta call home and get all sentimental, but... ah..." Chris pulled back from Holly, making her way towards the door. "We can talk some more later, if you need it."

-

Holly did not feel like being alone after Chris left. She couldn't bring herself to try sneaking over to Will's barracks, despite how appealing it sounded. Instead, she wandered over to the rec room once more. Raker had taken over the kitchen once more, cooking up something that smelled absurdly delicious... but she wasn't hungry.

She settled in for watching the last hour of Iron Eagle, sitting next to the couch while a pile of witches occupied it. It was a silly movie, the lead character's F-16 couldn't have possibly taken out an entire base on its lonesome in real life, and everyone in the room agreed it was bullshit that his wingwitch went down purely for drama.

After playing the role of squadron nanny and reminding the girls to rest up, Holly wandered towards her office so she could make her own call home, she had promised the folks another phone call, after all. When she got to the office, through the window she could see Chris sitting in her chair, laughing into the phone... with tears also drying on her face.

Holly hadn't seen that before.

Not wanting to disturb, Holly found herself walking out the barracks door, distractedly acknowledging the salutes from the four soldiers out front. The hangars called to her, but she didn't know why. Will was probably getting in some sleep already, so he could be there tomorrow when it was time to launch.

Daily maintenance was done, her weapons cleaned, being there would likely only get her to start stressing out about the other girls' equipment.

She was distracted by the sight of Commander Kazanski, sitting alone atop a set of crates facing her squadron's hangar. She was curled up into a ball, hugging her legs against herself. Occasionally she'd look up from her knees to take another look at Bishop's new steelwing, the Wyvern, and sigh shakily. She hadn't heard Holly's approach, or chose to ignore it, obviously deep in thought.

The Colonel stood behind her for a long time, unsure of how to greet Kazanski. This was a perfect chance to try and set the record straight and to apologize... but she looked so stressed out that Holly almost preferred to avoid the confrontation. She started to take a few slow steps back, aiming to slip off towards her own hangar while remaining unnoticed.

"Goddamnit Bishop," Kazanski growled, shaking her head. "You can't- You don't joke about that sort of thing!" She fiercely rubbed at her eyes, trying to hide any evidence that she was upset.

Holly decided that one more awkward conversation for the day couldn't hurt.

"It was kinda dumb of him, wasn't it?"

"WAH!" Kazanki lost her balance on the crate as she tried to spin to confront the surprise interloper, falling off it to the ground. "How how how long have YOU been there, huh?!"

"Not very." Holly smiled, taking up Kazanki's former seat.

"So you heard me just now?" Kazanki grumbled.

"And why you're upset."

"Uuuuuuuuugh," the Navy witch slapped her forehead, starting to pace around Holly. "I mean what the hell! We spend a week wondering if he's dead, the next day he's cracking jokes about the USAF trying to get him killed!? After we've been assigned a mission like this?"

"I did volunteer squadrons for support," Holly said quietly. "I'm not a big fan of how that's all going down."

It didn't. Didn't you read Ghost's '45 quest? Humanity started pushing the Martians back hardcore right before Mars devolved into civil war.
>>
>>31357395
True, but I seriously doubt the war ended with absolute annihilation of all martian troops earth-side.

"We can handle our stuff without your help, Air Force..." Kazanski said, trying to still sound indignant.

"Obviously," Holly chuckled. Kazanski vaulted up to the crates, sitting back-to-back with the Colonel.

"Appreciate the sentiment though," Kazanski gave Holly a nudge to the back with an elbow. "I guess I owe you an apology for yesterday, and for today-"

"I haven't been much better-" Holly interrupted.

"I'm sorry, Colonel... and that's the best you're getting outta me."

"I'll take what I can get," Holly said.

'I'm gonna have to make her upset one more time,' she thought sadly.

"How's Bishop been?"

"Fine... I guess," Kazanski shook her head. "He hasn't really wanted to discuss what happened in detail... I can't imagine what he went through. I didn't see him go down myself, but cameras on the ground sure did, it's been on the news practically every day since then." She shuddered. "Whatever, he doesn't need to tell us anything if he doesn't want. I'm just- We're glad he's back, that's all that counts."

"I'm glad he's back too, I still owe him for ripping a Flanker off me." Holly coughed awkwardly. "Hey Kazanski?

"Yeah?"

"Wanna give me another punch?"

"Where'd that come from?!" Kazanski almost fell off the crate again.

Slipping off the crate, Holly walked in front of Kazanski, taking a deep breath as she prepared herself for the worst.

"I'm sorry. I knew Bishop was alive," she began, watching as Kazanski's expression changed from surprised amusement, to jaw-clenched rage. "I knew where he'd been shipped, and I even had a good idea of his condition, and I didn't tell you anything."

For a long moment, Kazanski simply glared, while Holly stood resolute, trying to brace for the punch she knew would be coming her way.

I changed it to 'neither planet wanted anything to do with the other' because, from I remember, it's been all but outright said that we're getting Martian War 2: Wyvern Boogaloo.

And then there's the fact that underwater martian colonies are a thing.

And, yes, I did read the '45 interlude. I've been here for every single thread Ghost has ran. Every. Single. One.

"I... had a feeling..." Kazanski managed to say. Holly blinked, utterly confused. She was still expecting to find herself waking up on the ground with a sore jaw.

"I'm really sorry, I know that might not mean much-"

"Goddamnit MacLeod, I was begging you for information! You should have told me!"

"It was a request from the healwitch responsible for putting him back together," Holly said, reflexively leaning back as Kazanski raised a hand, only to brush it through her hair with a sigh. "I felt compelled to honor that request... not that it makes what I did okay, b-but-"

"No, it doesn't!" Kazanski fumed, looking away from MacLeod. "I- We had a really rough week hoping for any news whatsoever! You're goddamned right I'm pissed!"

"I almost told you, a dozen times this week, I just couldn't do it," Holly frowned. "I mean, when I heard they'd sent him to NavHosPearl-"

"Pearl?!" Kazanski exclaimed. "Jesus, how bad was he?! How could you *not*-"

"They didn't think he'd survive the trip there at first!" Holly argued back. "Th-the healwitch in question was Georgette Mackintosh, she told me she didn't think she could save him, didn't want me to get people's hopes up-" She shook her head rapidly. "After seeing your reunion, I almost thought it was right for me to have lied to you like that! If I'd been wrong, if I said he was okay, only for him to die afterwards, I didn't even want to think of dealing with that, I didn't want to put your squadron through that. And I know what I did wasn't any better! I just... I didn't know how to approach you about it... I kept thinking how I'd act in your position and..." she trailed off after that.

"Cry in the shower and hope nobody else notices?" Kazanski asked quietly.

"I think... I'd be pretty loud about it," Holly said truthfully. "It was so easy to hide the news from you, at first I even justified it to myself that I was somehow protecting your squadron from further harm."
>>
>>31357598
I imagine the world's navies have some serious firepower ready. After all, the UN does have the Arkbird and shit, if I remember rightly.
>>
>>31357615
"You can't protect everyone from everything."

"You're only the third person to tell me that this week," Holly sighed.

"We're trying to make you a better commanding officer." Kazanski was clearly fighting to suppress a grin. "I'd call BS on the Mackintosh thing... but somehow I don't think you'd just throw that name out there. Now, if you'd said Admiral Nixon had ordered you..." Kazanski rolled her eyes.

'Bullet dodged,' Holly thought.

"I understand where you're coming from, MacLeod... I'm just kinda surprised you care so much about Spellcaster, considering we're Navy-"

"And obviously inferior witches." Holly pounced on her chance to fire off her own sarcastic barb.

"Walked into that one..."

"But you're still witches, and you're under my command for the time being. Everyone in my command gets this treatment whether they like it or not." Holly looked away. "I kinda have a reputation."

"Of being a meddler?"

"Of being a *worrier*!" Holly's cheeks puffed with further embarrassment. "I just... saw your reaction to Bishop going down and I did the math in my head! I mean it's obvious you all love the man so much-"

"Love?" Kazanski squeaked, coughing harshly and pounding her chest, trying not to choke on thin air. "What are you even talking about?"

"Well I mean I did see you try and tackle him to the ground," Holly said carefully, watching as Kazanski turned bright red when she recalled the moment.

"We just missed him a lot! You're trying to weasel your way out of this, aren't you?"

"I am *not*!" Holly insisted. "I've been worried sick about this all week!"

"Obviously it was because you're afraid of me." Kazanski didn't fight her grin this time.

"Yeah..." Unconciously, Holly rubbed her jaw where Kazanski had first punched her. "You've got a mean right hook." They laughed together at that, and what tension remained between the two seemed to face away."

"I'm not gonna forgive you, Air Force."

"I don't expect you to, but I-"

"You're alright."

It felt good to hear that.

The two witches eventually wore out the discussion of How Frank Bishop (and those like him) Pissed Them Off, and split up to take care of some personal business, wishing eachother luck for tomorrow's mission. Holly felt incredibly relieved that Kazanski didn't seem willing to hold a grudge. All things considered, they were finally square. Between that, and one brief phone call home, her sleep that night was dreamless and energizing. Once again, she'd awakened before her alarm went off, Chris trailing only minutes behind.

Breakfast was light for Holly. Her stomach felt upset enough as is as she went through her morning routine. A quick trip to the life support and intel shops did little to stop the shakes wracking her body with every step she took. She felt cold even as she hugged Will's poncho against herself that much tighter, even as she allowed her familiar to manifest.

She walked past Kazanski and Bishop sharing a private moment and some coffee, and decided to let them be rather than to butt in.

By the time she reached her hangar, Chris was already geared up and ready to go, waving at Holly as she walked up. Will was at her side within moments, handing over her MFD and HUD display goggles in exchange for the poncho, her boots, and her hat. As he helped her into her ballistic vest and combat webbing, she felt the shakes come on worse than ever as the straps tightened around her body.

"You good?"

"Yeah."

One final pow-wow, all of the witches gathering around Holly for a quick refresher on who was doing what, where, when, and why. Nobody asked questions, everyone knew their roles. Holly liked being thorough, and nobody ever complained while indulging her on this.

A brief prayer. She wasn't particularly religious, but she believed, and found herself hoping more than ever that the big guy was watching out for her and hers.

Returning to Will, they did a final *final* check of her weapons before she holstered both sidearms and shouldered her rifle, still wracked by shakes. When it came time to mount her strikers, he climbed up the ladder alongside her. As always, the interfaces accepted her legs without any faults detected by her MFD. To her right, several dozen feet away, Chris was already rolling forward towards the tarmac, flashing Holly a thumbs up.

Will was still at her side, hanging onto the striker stand as she prepared to move out. His mouth moved as he tried to say something to her, but she couldn't quite hear him over the roar of her strikers firing up, joining those of her fellow witches.

"I'm sorry, I can't hear you," she mouthed at him, frowning slightly.

He leaned closer as though to whisper into her ear, and Holly felt herself tense up as his voice became crystal clear.

"I said I'll be waiting for you. Good luck... and come back to me."

The shakes vanished as she pulled him into a hug.

Minutes later she was in the air with her witches, believing that she had no regrets.

You bet.

Tarin is so obviously cleanup crew material, the sort of people who erase all evidence should something go wrong. She's above suspicion, because she's practically a tool.

Janice is practically matron material. She's handled sensitive ops, she's got the experience and the temperament. She's the next handler in training for the black ops people.

Red was originally a hostage if you will. "Behave or we send her into an active warzone" dealie. But she took to it too well, becoming more and more of an asset. Very promising, being able to go toe to toe with a tankwitch on foot. Field agent material right there.
