You are John James Green, mutant vagrant.

Today has taken a turn for the very weird.

The snow crunches under your feet, and for a moment you just listen to your own footsteps, feeling out the curvatures of ancient, cracking coke cans and glass shards and little specks of debris. Lots of old stories here, sealed tight under the veil of snow. Scar’s gonna look hella different when winter finally parts its fringe and lets the sun back in. In a way, you might miss it a bit – gonna be hard to store any amount of food without all the ice and snow lying around.

You left Layla with Nori and Lucas. She’s still got a bit of a fever, and she’s taking the sudden changes in her life… very well. You wonder how much enthusiasm for being superpowered will survive her first encounter with the boys at Mutant Control.

Then again, what if she’s not even a mutant? Self-cloning – or whatever she’s doing – is pretty far out. Lots of stuff other than muties out there.

Kevin and Gaby converse quietly up ahead. You could listen in, but you don’t. Laura trails a little ways behind, padding softly through the snow.

You hope these Young X-Men people aren’t total shits.

>[X] Laura

You glance back at Laura, her eyes catching yours momentarily. For a moment her gaze seems to slip across the icy sheen of the scar, pattering off the sides of old, skeletonized buildings and burnt-out cars. You know that reaction. It’s that silent, awkward second right after someone’s caught you staring at them.

You didn’t think Laura cared about that stuff.

“Uh…” You cough very light, slowing your pace a little. “…You alright?”

She nods. “Yes. I’m not hurt.”

“That’s not really… I mean, I’m sorry about taking off this morning.” You scratch nervously at the scales on your shoulder. “I shouldn’t have done that. It just doesn’t really feel like I’ve been gone for a week, I guess.”

Silence. Eventually, she looks up, quickening her pace a little.

“It’s fine.”

You make your way over a cluster of old vehicles, fused by some terrible heat into the pavement. She’s not hanging back quite as far anymore, but she’s still pretty quiet.

How about this:

we sort out our meeting with the YX men, sort out our job situation so we have an income, then do some light scouting until we formulate a plan.
>>
>>31365132
Actually I just double checked. I was mistaken.

>He can rechannel the absorbed energy through his body for biokinetic concussive blasts or in the same form that was absorbed but with twice the force/power, including Storm's weather effects. This rechanneled energy is apparently able to damage beings normally immune to their own powers.

He can. I theory amplify Noriko's power. But right now Bishop is 16 years old and probably doesn't have enough control or knowledge about his power to use this blast power.
>>
>>31365170
Actually, he can use it.
He told us in the ship that he absorbs energy and shoots it out and we gave him an electric charge so he could cover himself.
>>
>>31365139
I'm okay with that. We've be sitting on that information for a large part of the quest, before thread 15 I think, so I thought it need to be brought back up.
>>
>>31365201
I thought he only used our charge to increase his strength. We charged him so that he could rip the doors off the containers.

>Bishop can also store absorbed energy within his personal reserves, whereupon the energy increases his strength, speed, stamina and recuperative abilities, as well as affording him a measure of invulnerability.
>>
>[X] Talk about what she’s been doing while you were gone.
>[X] Talk about her.

“So…” You slow down a little, winding down to match your pace with Laura’s. She watches you out the corner of her eyes. “You’ve been keeping the gangs on their toes while I was cocooned, right? How bad is it?”

She considers it for a moment, her eyes shifting ahead.

“It will be worse soon.” She concludes.

Oh. Okay. That’s good to know.

“You know…” You scratch the back of your neck, your brow furrowing with the awkward weight of the question you’re pulling into reality. “…I don’t really get why you even stayed. I mean, did you really think I was alive?”

She shifts uncomfortably, her shoulders drooping a little inward.

“I’m not sure. I don’t…” Her voice trails off into a long silence, and you get the very distinct impression that she’s stuck somehow on some redoubt of thought.

“Well, whatever.” You say, hopefully just shooing the whole thing aside. “I guess I owe you. Again.”

“Yes, that seems to happen a lot.”

You can’t help but smile very faintly.

“Well, what do you want this time?” Your answer is a grinding, thought-stricken silence. “Whatever you want. I mean… what kind of things do you like?”

She squints into the distance, and her voices crackles just very slightly when she finally speaks up.

“I don’t know.”

>[Insert Suggestion]

“Want to play tag again?” What is this, preschool? You’re a grown man, JJ, you – “I mean, that would probably be fun.”

Her eyes widen very slightly, and she turns her gaze back to you. For a moment you just listen to the weight of your own breath as she scrutinizes you in silence.

“Yes.” She turns back to the path. “I think I enjoyed that. You should wash first, however.”

“Right.”

You don’t smell that bad, do you?

You walk for a good twenty minutes or so, occasionally weaving through the remains of some fallen building. Eventually, Kevin stops at the base of some long-abandoned municipal building, its frame drooping just very slightly askew. It’s in remarkably good condition compared to much of the scar, though most of its windows and doors appear to have been blasted open. Probably gets pretty drafty.

“This is it?” You ask.

“Mhmm.” Answers Gaby. “This is where we met them last, anyway.”

“And these guys know you?”

“Yeah…” Kevin replies, his voice trailing away a little uncertainly. “I mean, some of them do. I dunno how many of them there are.”

Someone was talking about writing some Laura JJ smut. But he never got around to finishing it.

I think it started with Laura training JJ. She used some kung fu and ended up on top of him with his arms pinned down. Then he just kind of leaned forward and kissed her.

Not saying this would happen during tag or anything.

>[X] Declare yourselves.

Well. These guys are the ‘Young X-Men’, right?

They’re probably not going to shoot you or anything.

“Hey!” You shout. “Young X-Guys! You in there!?”

Your senses expand over your surroundings, detailing the interplay of wind and snow, the dead earth under your feet, the slight, invisible pressures of the ruins slowly slumping inwards…

Something moves in the snow to your right, over by the caved-in bowl of debris that was once a delicatessen or a café or something. The wind shifts and you catch the scent of dry sweat and wet fur, and stains seeping through unwashed corduroy. As you scan the ruins for any visible sign of movement, someone emerges from one of the blasted-out windows of the big building across the road, casting a brief glance over your group.

“Uh… hi?”

It’s some scrawny blonde kid with neatly-cropped hair and a coat way too big for him. His face is a tentative, careful mixture of bemusement and caution.

“You called, I guess?”

“Hey. I’m looking for a guy called Jeb.” You’d extend a hand or something, but you want to be sure that he won’t disintegrate it or turn it to jelly or something. Might seem a little paranoid, but you live with Kevin goddamn Ford, who could be the poster boy for unwanted mutant-related afflictions. “My friends told me he hangs out with you guys.”

“Oh, you’re a friend of Jebediah’s?” His expression softens visibly.

“Not exactly.”

“But, uh, we know Borkowski.” Interjects Kevin, pointing to himself and a nodding Gaby.

“Right, well…” The guy takes a deep breath, before trying what you’d guess is his best at a diplomatic tone. “He’s not here right now. I’d invite you guys in, but we kinda have a bit of a situation going on, so…”

Her brushes his hair back, the minute details of the action suggesting a certain level of nervousness.

Damn, you’ve gotten pretty good at this whole enhanced senses thing.

Well, fair enough. They’ve got a problem, you understand problems, you can just come back some other ti –

“Maybe I can help?”

It just comes out on its own, like a rash burning to the surface. JJ Green and his inability to mind his own business. Gotta put a stop to that someday. Maybe get an ointment for it. Not today, though – now that you’ve committed yourself to idiocy, it’d make you seem like a total flake if you backed out. And you don’t wanna be a total flake.

The guy seems a little taken aback, his brow rising in surprise

“Well… don’t take this the wrong way, but, uh…” He smiles in possibly the most non-threatening way possible. “What can you do? Mutant-wise?”

“I can do lots of things.” You reply. “Possibly some things I don’t even know about.”

“Well… alright, then, I guess.” He smiles again, a knowing glint in his eyes. “I mean, I can tell you want to help.”

What was up with that? He a mind-reader or something? God, you hope not…
>>
>(2/2)

He motions for you to follow him inside, and you do, picking your way over an old, sodden carpet laced with tiny smatterings of debris. The place looks like it was hit by a shockwave rather than an actual blast, its walls notably lacking in the blast-shadow department, some areas even retaining some shreds of wallpaper. As you make your way along what looks like some kind of fire exit or side passage or something, you begin to hear hushed voices discussing something further inside.

“Oh, I’m Douglas, by the way.” Notes the guy, offering his hand. You shake it tentatively, still a little worried about being turned into bees. “Everyone calls me Doug.”

“John.” You reply. “Everyone calls me JJ.”

The others introduce themselves as you make your way further in. Soon enough you turn into a large room that you immediately recognize as a library (or what’s left of it, anyway), sparsely-populated bookshelves converging across the floor toward a small clearing in the middle. A few young figures stand around a bunch of tables they’ve clearly dragged in from elsewhere, looking up from a conversation as you enter the hall.

“Doug?” Says the smaller one, some Asian girl with big, exaggerated bangs, her voice going through that broadening, teacher-esque tone that suggests something is out of place. “Who are these guys?”

“It’s okay, I know two of them…” The second, less brusque voice belongs to a young man whose skin is entirely green, a spiny cap of reptilian scales crowing his head in the place of hair.

And then there’s someone on the table between them…

>[X] “Hey, I’m JJ, these guys are… these guys.”

“Well…” Begins Doug, looking a little nervous. “These guys kinda turned up and” –

“Hey, I’m JJ, these guys…” You motion to your companions. “…are… these guys.”

“Seriously?” Chuckles Kevin. “That’s all I get?”

He nods at the green guy, who nods back.

The girl seems thoroughly unimpressed, nursing her temple with one hand and muttering under her breath about… properness, or something. Dark bags under her eyes. Stooped posture. Irregular ticks in the way she holds herself. She’s gone for some time without sleep – or not enough of it, anyway.

“Right… that’s great, and I’m sure you’re great…” She sighs heavily. “But we’re kind of busy here. If you need a mediator or something, Doug can help you…”

That’s interesting. You’re not really listening, though. You’re much more concerned with the guy laid out on the table, mostly because he’s giving you some serious déjà vu. The way he slumps softly to one side, breath rattling almost silently through his lungs, his every inch devoid of the tiny, human ticks that invade us during our sleep… it’s identical to the state you found Sam’s brother in...

“…Hello? Are you listening to me, shades?”

You start back to reality, focusing on the girl, who is giving you some optimum stink-eye.

Don't really need to ask, unless its to ask if they saw the guy who did it.

We should really try smelling the person responsible on the unconcious one, they probably had to come within contact, so some scent might be left.

“Cool it, short stuff.” It just comes out, wriggling to the surface. The girl steps back a little, more shocked than angry, and you think you hear someone stifling a laugh behind you. “I just wanna help, okay?”

You nod at the patient strewn out along the table, pulling down your shades.

“Mind if I take a look at him?”

“…Sure.” She shakes her head, resting her eyes for a moment. “Fine, sure, just… go ahead. Victor, make sure he doesn’t hurt him.”

Looming over the unconscious youth, you shift your vision along the thermal spectrum, studying his internals for signs of injury. As you examine him, Lizard Boy – Victor, whatever – speaks up, angling his gaze upon you, a hint of suspicion in his eyes.

“Hey, uh…. Do I know you?” Hmmm? “Did I meet you on the boat or something?”

>[X] “Probably.”

“Probably…” No notable irregularities, thermally speaking. His organs are all in order, his flesh and blood sit perhaps a little below average temperature (not surprising, considering the lovely weather), and he generally seems stable. But that’s about what you were expecting, isn’t it? “…I’d imagine a lot of people ran into me.”

Gently, you turn him over, just to get a better look at his eyes. Much as you were expecting, there’s none of the tiny twitches you’d associate with REM sleep.

“I was one of the guys opening the crates.”

You hear Victor get up behind you.

“Seriously?”

You nod. The girl snorts dismissively, rolling her eyes.

“Don’t believe everything people tell you, Vic.”

“Well, whatever.” You sniff carefully at the patient. “Believe what you want. That whole episode ended in nothing but trouble for me.”

Digging through the rushing, bloody scents of the human body, you finally come upon something useful. Scents that you presumed unique to Joshua disentangle themselves from the miasma, streaking out into a working picture – you get the same vague flesh tones, the same haggard sweat, the same breaths, the same filthy jeans and running makeup. Oddly enough, you get the same waxy smell you were picking up from Joshua’s wings, too.

Maybe they were attacked at the same time?

>[X] EVERYTHING

You feel like you’ve got all the pieces, but they don’t quite fit yet. Or you don’t have the glue. Or something. Metaphors aren’t really your thing.

“How’d you find this guy?”

“We didn’t.” The girl straightens up, loosening a low, long-suffering sigh. She’d been taking a quick rest against one of the bookshelves while you proceeded with your examination. “His name’s Vance, he’s a telekinetic. His friends brought him in when they found him, said it looked like he’d been throwing around some furniture before… whatever happened, happened.”

“And I’m guessing you’ve got no idea what that was?”

She shrugs, but you notice her brow crease in shame, or maybe just disappointment.

“Well. I’d say whatever did this was fast. Or quiet. Vance isn’t any kind of pushover.” She allows herself a small smile. You definitely get the impression that she’s the kind of person who ‘allows’ herself things like that. “To be honest, he’d probably flatten me in a straight up brawl.”

Useful. Ish. Mostly what that tells you is that you want to leave this whole thing alone.

“And what’re you going about this?”

Her smile fades immediately.

“You have no idea how many times I’ve heard that question. News spreads surprisingly fast here.” She rubs her eyes, taking a moment to collect her thoughts. “Well, for now, we’re not making any assumptions. We’re taking in anyone that turns up with the symptoms, but we’re not starting up any kind of witch hunt.”

Well, that seems surprisingly reasonable. Especially for something out the mouth of a teenager.

“Corsairs’ll be looking for blood, though.” Comments anole, a nervous tick to his voice. “Or at least some light bruising.”

“Well…” You consider this for a moment. Do you really want to put yourself in front of something that decked a telekinetic? “…I’ve managed to pick out some pretty interesting scents here, so I’ll have a root around the scar.”

“The what?” She raises and eyebrow.

“Uh… nothing.” Oh, yeah. You forgot that that was your little way of referring to the place. To everyone else it’s the Mandatory Exclusion Zone. “Anyway, this guy smells of a lot of the same stuff Jeb’s brother does. He’s in pretty much the same state, too.”

Victor springs out into your periphery, his emerald features contorted in concern.

“Oh my god, is he alright?”

“He’s not dead.” Yep, that’s about as nice a bowtie as you can wrap around the guy’s situation. “Just tell this Jeb guy that he wants to go see his brother yesterday. He doesn’t want to know what it feels like to utterly fail a sibling when they need you most.”

No he doesn’t.

“So…” Moving on, somewhat. You glance at Victor. That comment about your local mutant larceny ring perked up some curiosity in you. “What’s up with you guys and the Corsairs anyhow?”

“Uh…” He grins a little lamely. “It’s complicated…”

The girl cuts in.

“For now, I trust Jono not to let things get too crazy. I don’t like what he’s doing, but he’s helped a lot of people, and things haven’t gone wrong yet.” Yet. You can’t help but notice that. “Hopefully, when it does, Jono will have enough control over the situation to keep it contained. And then maybe everyone will realize how dumb they’re being.”

She glances up at you, taking in for the first time the details of your appearance, her gaze soaking in your boots, traveling up your legs to and arms and shoulders, finally settling on your eyes. You can’t help but notice a hint of discomfort, as if there’s something vaguely unnerving about them.

“Well done on grabbing that scent.” She says, eventually, her tone softening somewhat. “We’ve got a sensory enhancile here” – what in the hell is that, some PC term for mutants that smell good? –“but she couldn’t get anything significant from him.”

“Probably just needs practice.” You reply, keeping things diplomatic.

“Oh?” That tone. Sounds like she’s just successfully landed a big fat carp. “Maybe you could give her some pointers?”

Oh…

Well, whatever.

“Sure.” What would be the harm in it? “That said…”

You jerk your thumb in Laura’s direction.

“My friend here, she’s the real nose expert.”

The small girl shifts awkwardly as all eyes turn to her, her posture suddenly blitzing through a succession of small twitches you’d generally associate with being a deer in the headlights. A moment of uncomfortable, expectant silence passes, Kevin and Gaby both cringing very slightly, before she finally opens her mouth:

“Yes…” She pauses, and you catch the slightest movement in her eyes, as though flicking through her surroundings for some hint as to what should come next. “…My nose is very good.”

Hah.

“For example, I can smell all the waste products to have touched, or been in close contact, with Jonathan’s coat in the last six months.” Wait, what? “Twelve milligrams fermented milk, approximately seventy-eight hours beyond its recommended period for consumption, ten grams sliced banana, roughly…”

JJ will still get popped out of invisibility if he gets hit or exerts himself too much. All Shadow Field does it make him look mostly transparent and hazy immediately after leaving stealth.

Crusty, is our sense of smell on par with Laura's now? Is JJ gonna have sensory overload from his own B.O. next chapter?
>>
>>31370319
People generally turn off their own B.O. After a bit you just stop smelling tings you smell all the time.
>>
>>31370259
Maintaining your invisibility is about regulation of thought and energy, the latter of which means regulating your breathing. It's actually easier to grapple while invisible than it is to punch or get hit, as those take more 'wind' out of you in a single instant.

Proper conservation of energy will help you fight normally while invisible. Using abilities above a certain extent, though, will always hijack almost all the energy/concentrating needed to remain out of sight, however.

Super strength, for example, will always switch off your invisifield.
>>
>>31370319

We really need to bum some money to get these clothes washed at a laundromat or something if we're actually going to keep them, to say nothing of getting a proper bath/shower.

I'd say Laura listing off all the filth we're covered in (and Gwen's reaction last time) would be a good enough impetus to finally take some time and get JJ's hygiene in order next chapter.

Well then, a good option to practice:

Yes, I'm sure JJ would have no trouble tracking down Hawkeye, who in turn would have no trouble listening to a random rancid-smelling hobo mutant's request for a really good bow.
>>

I'm talking about suspensions here. Should not be impossible to make a bow out of car suspension, though technically it would be closer to ballista in draw weight.
>>
>>31371309

>>
>>31371191
Why would JJ use the fire breath rather than electrohands for a job they're equally suited to, considering he's petrified of fire and has no such problem with electricity?
Do note - 'why JJ'. Not 'why you'. I'm not having a go, but this has come up before. I'm hoping this time someone has a half-decent reason that isn't blatant metagaming.

>>
>>31371554

>Hot gases that have a tendency to spontaneously combust.

Near an actual flame, which is something I think JJ would have been able to parse.

>Again, what's the impetus on JJ to do so?

To make sure he has it under enough control so as not to accidentally pepper spray someone? He just discovered he has two new abilities. He's already gone our and tried to get a handle on how his wings work. Figuring out how his heat breath functions, even as a preventative measure to avoid using it accidentally, should be a priority high on JJ's mental list.
>>
>>31371554
>Hot gases that have a tendency to spontaneously combust. As evidenced by the bloke we set on fire with it.

That caught on fire because of the spark of the gun being fired.

We can do that without having to make an unmodified DC18 (it's still 18, Crusty hasn't declared otherwise) check when we do.

True. Both of the times we beat the phobia it was because there we're situation modifiers. If a friend is in danger the modifier is equal to our relationship level with them.

If Laura is in trouble that 18 becomes a 14.
>>
>>31371897
Thing is, unless we train, there isn't that much that's different then taser-hands.
>>
>>31371621
Apparently so, though I will point out that petty insults do not help your position.
To me, it reads like you want JJ to get over his fear - a goal I fully agree with, by the way - and so you intend to use the improvement of basic hygiene as a lever to achieve said goal.
If this is incorrect, please; enlighten me.
If not...
Problem.
First off - in no way does this address the original point. Electrohands serves as well as the breath - you have not given any reason for JJ to use the breath outside of 'I want him to get over his fear.'
Second - this particular motivation lacks impact. The position of 'it'll help me be cleaner' is not sufficient when compared to 'too scared of fire to even look at a working stove in the middle of a New York winter'.

Don't get me wrong. I agree entirely that JJ could try to confront his fears. Given the right set of criteria, he would - he has in the past, in suitably dramatic fashion.
If he was given a sufficient shock to the system, something caused by his fear itself, I accept that he might even become proactive in getting over his fears. Doggedly so, in fact. Slap his fear in his face right, I fully expect he'd do everything in his power to overcome it.
Given a sufficiently plausible in-universe justification - AGAIN, from JJ's point of view - I will spin on a fucking dime and join right in with the trauma training.

But.
And this is an important but.

JJ, or indeed ANYONE, deciding overnight - without appropriate stimuli - to go against half a lifetime's experience with such crippling terror that he can't even light a sodding match, makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.
>>
>>31371897
If Laura is in danger i am never going to think now is a good time to try and get rid of thefire phobia. You know when is a good time? When you are trying to heat some bath water. For fucks sake, it would have to be the last and only resort if we will use it when a friend is in danger.
>>
