“Alright, everyone listen up!” Your brother's voice announces over Skype as his character, the human named Vertigo, begins its idle animation, “This next fight is The Four Phosphors. It's exactly like the final boss in the Putrid Sewers instance except there's Four of them, you shouldn't use AoEs, and they deal holy damage instead of poisoning you.”

Your brother is going to lead his first raid tonight for his guild and he wanted to practice first, unfortunately you are one of two people who agreed to help and you are only level 30. You stare down the path of the sewers to the Fetid Monstrosity, the final instance boss of the Putrid Sewers. Your best friend since preschool had agreed to help out as well, taking it upon himself to make up and act out the nine other members of the “raid.”

“I've never done that instance before.” Came your friend's voice. His character, Wolf-Hair marked Canis, began bouncing around the sewer walkway. His voice then becomes high pitched as he exclaims, “Zoh my god, Canis is a noob!”

“Derp, that is no way to speak to a fellow guild member!” Your brother proclaims in his authoritarian voice. It was not an especially effective voice in your opinion.

“I'm not Derp, I'm Herp!” Canis announces, having not changed his voice, “Huehuehuehue!”

“I thought it was Floop that was the Brazilian...” You comment offhandedly.

Canis drops back into his normal voice to say, “Forget about what they sound like, I'd be surprised if I could keep all these names straight.”

“Alright, so, here's how the fight works. There's four of them, twelve of us, and they all need to go down within a minute of eachother, so everyone will break up into groups of three. One tank, one DPS, one healer. When they become untargetable everyone needs to back up and dodge the pillars of light.” He pauses and then whispers, “The poison bubbles.”

Canis then drops into his 'Latin lover' voice. “Raid master Vertigo...” He sucked in air for emphasis, “I, Felipe, have a question that burns in my hot, Latin chest.”

The raid leader in training is stuck in awkward silence until he says, “I'm pretty sure Felipe wasn't in this instance until just now.”

“I am filling in for...” A pause for effect, “Floop.” Canis turns to face the wall behind him, “Floop had to leave to confront his wife about her affair, but what he does not know is...” The character then turns back to you, “I, Felipe, was the one who made passionate love to that woman.”

There was another awkward pause before your brother continues again, “And the question?”

“Why must I keep my attention on but one enemy why my body craves to spread my hot, magical magma all over all of them at once?”

Canis' antics were starting to get to you. You had to hide your laughter away from your mic, lest you incur the high pitched wrath of your younger brother.

“Because once you deal damage to one of them, you get a debuff associated with that specific Phosphor.” Your brother explains, “That debuff doesn't go away until that specific Phosphor is dead. If you just so happen to hit a different Phosphor, he gets a stack of a fancy little buff that increases his damage by a stupid amount, turning a straight forward fight into Tears and Pain: The Game.”

There is a lull in the conversation and you can hear your brother rub his hands together. “Alright does everyone know where they need to be?”

“Right in front, getting in his face!” You yell, getting hyped up, “Chargin' in like a man!”

“And I'm staying back here.” Canis says in his normal voice.

“Hell yeah!” Your brother yells back, getting fired up, “Alright! Herp, Derp, and Shnerp are on green triangle! Dib, Dob, and Doob are on red circle! Flip, Flop, and Floop a-”

“Floop is missing.” Canis reminds your brother.

“Okay... Fine. Flip, Flop, and FELIPE are on yellow star.” Your brother's aggravation is starting to shine through. “Me, my brother, and Canis are on purple moon.” A large purple moon pops into existence above the Fetid Monstrosity's head.

“And I, Felipe, master of hot, boiling passion, shall ram my mighty rods of stone into the yellow star Monstrosity!”

“Phosphor...” Your brother reminds.

“Phosphor!” Canis as Felipe corrects himself.

“Are we done with the silly voices?” Your brother asks. “Because if we are, I'm gonna start pulling.”

Your brother, the Brawler, yells a horrid taunt at the Abomination. The lumbering monster undulates as it charges for your brother. You too charge in turn. Canis begins to play his drums, giving each of your blows a powerful, damaging burst.

The creature's HP lowers slowly but sure. "We're half way there!" Your brother yells out.

You and Canis both respond in unison, "WOOOOAAAHH! LIVIN' ON A PRAAAYER!"

The Fetid Monstrosity begins vomiting everywhere, green bubbles float up from the pools of vomit and begin to float all over the battlefield.

"Get back!" Your brother commands. You all run back and as the bubbles begin to swarm he shouts once more, "To the left!"

"Take it back now ya'll!" Cannis adds.

"Cha cha real smooth." You conclude.

After about a minute of dodging, the monster stops vomiting. "Give it all you got!" Vertigo roars.

"Swords of Cherubim!" You shout as your mighty mace comes crashing into the beast. Burning swords go flying from the area of impact. Your brother's firsts begins to glow with the fiery Justice of angels.

"I bring the DeePS!" Is all he yells before his character erupts into a flurry of attack animations. That bonus damage you are giving him begins dropping the monster's HP like a lead balloon.

"Take this!" Canis announces, "The Song of My People!" His drum beats break into an obscene speed, and with each beat a small burst of energy pulses from the creature. The damage is small, but the sheer amount of hits takes the creature down.

It flops to the floor, its skin rippling before its death animation ends.

Your brother crouches down to it. "Drums of the Revolutionary!" He announces. Canis rolls need and you are barred from doing the same.

It was a good run. You had fun with your friend and brother and as you look at your brother's monk all you can say is...

"Your character looks like a slut."

There is an awkward silence.

"Really?" Your brother responds. "This shit again?"

"I'm just sayin'. When you get over to your guild hall, do you really think your guild leader is going to just nod and go, 'Now introducing the new raid leader, Vertigo the Slut'?"

"It's that stats that matter!" He protests.

"Oh, is that why you fairy ringed all the way to Korea and bought yourself that outfit?"

"Yes! Yes it is! It's equivalent to raiding tier armor and if I wanted to apply to the position I had to have raiding armor by today, which would be next to impossible unless I got it now!"

"So you think you're just going to walk in there, raid for them, and they're not going to question the fact that you had to BUY your armor with real money?"

"It doesn't fucking... I... FUCK YOU!" Your brother hangs up on the Skype call.
With that your brother glows and then disappears, returning back to town.

"Shit..." Canis whispers, "Now everything's awkward."

You sigh and grumble, "I'm gonna go work on my subclass."

"Okay." Canis responds, "I'm gonna go kick the rift." He then turns into a whirlwind of animations breaking and flowing into one another until finally he falls through the floor.

"There are easier ways to leave a dungeon."

"None are this fun!"

You leave party and grumble to yourself some more as your character returns home. "God damn. I can't believe he'd go and buy armor like that."

Before you sprawls the mighty city of South Angel. The desert sand surrounds the city, but the mighty statue in the middle of town, a giant statue of the game's god, wards away all evil and promises prosperity. According to the lore, anyways.

You meander past the merchant's quarter and past the all the people yelling for groups. Up on top of a ruined tower sits your player housing, which you use as your makeshift workshop.

Inside your tiny hovel sits a smelter, an anvil, a chair, a bed, and more levers than you'll ever need. Hardly anything, but you got it all on your own without anyone's help. Your character sits in his chair and begins smelting ore into bars. From the bars you make gears, and with the gears you make levers. You stick each lever on your ever decreasing wall space and then proceed to make another one.

Soon your engineer level increases and you lean back in your chair, staring up at the ceiling. You reach behind you to the light switch and flick it on and off, over and over again. You're not sure why, but you always felt a need to flip switches as you thought, much to the annoyance of all around you.

You close your eyes.

Fox hair or whatever, but it's the worst race. They randomly swap one of their class abilities for another ability, which completely gimps them most of the time.

There was a kitsune race, good stats and all, but you lost a random skill from your class progression so people hardly ever took it for fear of not having one of their class's bread and butter or badass skills.

Back in the first race choice, Fox Hair would have been under "other".

It's another hardmode race since their skills randomly jump around when they level for some reason.

Worth it for the tails though.

"Prostitute" was a humorous mistranslation, I forget what it's supposed to be but it wasn't intended to be anything lewd.

Nureha just made it lewd when she took over a city by whoring herself to noblemen for unlimited dosh.

You push the lever back down, closing your door to the outside world. Crybabies, that's what they are! You're the one stuck in this game, not them!

Experiment number two. You slam a lever on your chair, but the lever does not attach. You try again at the anvil and the same thing happens. It appears that the parameters for attaching levers to things has not changed; it only works on things that can change a binary state, like doors and chests in the open and closed states, and walls for decoration.

UP

DOWN

UP

DOWN

Experiment number three. You attach a lever to a lever, end to end. Changing one's state changes the other, almost as if they were really attached. You attempt to pull them apart, but they refuse to budge. You attach two more levers together to form the legendary QUAD LEVER. Strange, with how they act, it's almost like they're actually attached by gears or something.

UP, UP, UP, UP

DOWN, DOWN, DOWN, DOWN

Experiment number four. You smash the quad lever with your mace. Sacrifices had to be made of science. The contraption spills its gears all over the floor. Such intricate work all these gears have formed. You seem to be running low on levers now, so you attempt to pull one from the wall, but it refuses to move. After frustration takes hold of you, you smash it with your mace.

Part of your wall crumbles away, revealing the entire wall has hundreds, if not thousands of gears inside your walls. After flipping some more levers, you come to the conclusions that the gears do nothing, which is a bit of a disappointment.

You hear the in game ringing of a call. It's from Canis. He's probably worried because you didn't pick up on Skype, most likely because your body is slumped over the keyboard.

You pick up the call and before you can say anything you hear Canis yell out, "Are you okay!?"

"Oh, yeah." You respond, "I'm just stuck in the game."

"Everyone is!" He informs you.

I was thinking more the spy network/info brokering, whores have a long and distinguished history as spies. After a good lay people get awfully talkative for some reason. Maybe put a bar in there as well, the mix of booze and sex should loosen lips pretty damn effectively.

But yes, traps are always a good idea for any home base. Maybe with magic or the admin settings we can set them to only trigger on hostiles or people we don't know. With enough dosh and time we could possibly make our own instance for people to go into.

You head outside while calling Canis. You only have about five levers left.

"He's fine." Is what you say when he picks up.

"Oh. That's good." He responds, "And you're not freaking out or anything?"

Experiment ... five? Lever does not attach to trees.

"Nah, not really. More interested in these levers."

Experiment 5b: Levers do not attach to dirt or rocks either.

"Levers?"

Experiment 6: Lever can attached to broken car door.

"Yeah. Leve- Ah!" You yell out. Flipping the switch caused the car door to ram right into your shins. "Son of a bitch! Fuckin' rusted... God damn..."

"Everything alright over there?"

"Yeah, just flippin' levers. You know how it is."

"Can't say I do."

Experiment 7: Lever can attach to broken car engine. Flipping lever does nothing.

"Wait, weren't you glitching through the floor?" You ask, "How'd you get out of that?"

"I fell into some kind of crazy dungeon. Fire and lava everywhere. Looked abandoned but it scared the crap out of me so I TPed back to town."

You look down at the remaining three levers you have and then back up to your home.

"Canis, you still there?" You ask, now realizing you never hung up.

"Yeah?" He responds

"You ready to see me take flight?"

"N...no?"

"Too bad."

You pull the lever and the door slams into the chair. For a few brief moments you are flying. The ground beneath you, the sky above your head. You are a majestic bird who has taken to the sky for the first time.

Then gravity has a say in the matter. You lose altitude fast. You try to lean the "wings" up to slow your descent, but it is no use. You notice someone on a rock and you scream, "Get out of the way!"

You hit the ground hard and your contraption breaks to pieces. As you get to your feet you notice an Elf is sitting on a rock, next to the wreckage, the name Symbology floats above her head, and beneath that is <Sweet Cake>. You have never heard of that guild before, but then again guilds were never much of your forte.

You stand tall over this woman and scowl at her. "Symbology isn't a word!"

She simply blinks at you. She probably has no idea what's going on. "W-what?" She finally stammers out.

"Symbology isn't a word!" You repeat.

She looks to her left, then to her right. Other than you, a broken chair, ruined buildings, and the desert there is nothing in the immediate area.

"Are... are you serious?"

"Of course I am!" You announce, "You can't just make up words!"

She blinks twice. "Let me get this straight. You come, crash your... plane-chair thing, almost hitting me, and all you have to say is my name isn't a word?"

You think for a moment. "Also, you saw nothing." You pause, "Unless you want to tell people how amazing my flying machine is, because then, you saw everything!"

She gets up off the rock and begins to walk away. She does not appear to understand the brilliance she just witnessed.

You decide to go into town and get some more supplies, also to make more levers. You prefer to make levers in your own home, but making some in town won't be that big of a deal.

"Stop following me!" Yells Symbology.

"I'm not following you!" You yell back.

"What the hell is going on over there?" Asks Canis, still on the phone with you.

"Some idiot with a stupid name." You reply.

"Oh." There is a pause, "You realize Symbology is a real thing, right?"

You stop dead in your tracks. "What?"

"Study of symbols. That's symbology."

You have the sudden urge to bury your face in the sand and die. "Oh."

You stay where you are until Symbology is out of sight.

"Are you in town yet?" Canis asks.

"No, I'm just... standin' around. You know how it is."

"Well, everyone in town is freaking out. It's pretty chaotic over here, so I'll go to you."

"Nah, I need to pick up supplies in town. I'll find you."

"You're stuck in a game and the first thing you think of is that you need to get supplies?"

"No, the first thing I think of is what do the levers do. Have you not been paying attention?"

There is silence.

Click.

How odd.

You head into town. Many people are crowded around the giant statue, praying. Other are huddled around the city portal. You, however, are heading to the merchant district. The area seems mostly barren except for a few people sobbing. You go up to the cloth merchant.

"BUY CLOTH TIMES TWENTY!" You yell. You couldn't seem to find the merchant's interface, so you hoped yelling would be the answer.

The merchant puts on a peculiar look, a mix of terror and confusion. Obviously you said the wrong thing.

"BUY!" You yell.

"Y-yes. I heard you." The Merchant says weakly, "What did you want to buy?"

"CLOTH!" It appears you are making progress now that you know the right commands.

"Right, but what kind of cloth?"

There's more than one kind of cloth? Well, it makes sense, there would have to be different levels of cloth armor, and higher level clothes let less damage get through them, so therefore high level cloth should let less air get through and thus allow you to fly!

"SORT BY LEVEL DESCENDING! BUY CLOTH AT STORE INVENTORY OPEN BRACKET ZERO CLOSE BRACKET!"

He looks at you confused again. It was a long shot, but at least you know that isn't the answer.

"Umm... I'm sorry, I have no idea what you're talking about."

"BUY MOST EXPENSIVE CLOTH!" That definitely won't work, the AI would have no idea what you're talking about.

"Do you mean Dragon Weave?"

"YES!" It certainly sounded powerful enough.

"How much of it do you want?"

"TWENTY!"

"Twenty ... what? Feet? Yards? Rolls?"

"T- .... TWENTY!"

"Twenty rolls?"

"YES!"

"I only have one roll."

"BUY ONE ROLL OF DRAGON WEAVE!"

"That's a thousand gold."

"ACCEPT PURCHASE OF STEEL SILK ROLL TIMES ONE!" The money does not seem to be leaving your inventory so you reach into you drop it from your inventory onto the merchant.

The broken man looks at all the coins, counts them up, and hands you the roll of cloth. It is a lot more cloth than you expected. The cloth is silvery and light reflects from it as if it were metal. How fascinating. You leave the merchant and do not look back.

>find Canis

Every good MC needs some cannon fodder.
>>
>>31377291
Poor Canis. I hope he finds us before we lever our lever.
>>
>>31377291
Damn, I feel bad for Canis, he probably thinks we went off the deep end too.
>>
>>31377336
>he probably thinks we went off the deep end too
To be fair, he's probably pretty correct.
>>
>>31377336
Can you honestly say he'd be wrong about that?

We can only be thankful that our deep end go offing was rather productive.
>>
>>31377291
You go off to the closest workbench you can find. All these gears you pulled out of your walls must be useful for something. You cobble together some levers, but something is very wrong. Instead of the smooth, flat attaching end of the lever you are used to, you instead see a gear sticking out, furthermore it refuses to stick to walls, door, or pretty much anything. You look in your inventory at the last three True Levers in your inventory. They haven't changed.

You hold your new lever in your hand.

UP

The gear on the bottom scrapes your palm. It is not a pleasant sensation, but you can't think otherwise...

DOWN

UP

DOWN

Through the pain and confusion you have concluded that this was obviously some kind of patch that was done, but the normal levers couldn't be taken out of the system so instead they replaced the output of the recipe. You nod, agreeing with yourself.

You continue making False Levers. They may not be as good, but they'll certainly be of use, right? Right.

It then dawns on you, that the only person besides yourself who knows up the true potential of levers is Symbology. She must be a dev or something who has changed lever recipes to keep you from gaining power. There's only one thing to do...

[ ] Find and confront Symbology.
[ ] Go find Canis and complain about how things aren't fair.

Oh don't worry, we'll run into mobs, bosses, and other players with interrupt and silence skills that can put us in a pretty bad spot.

Good news is we don't die if we are killed, bad news is that costs us our precious memories of our original lives and world. First few deaths you only lose trivial things like what your cat looked like or what you called it. Die enough times and well...

Anyone you love? Someone who meant the world to you? A wife? Your mother? A real pity it'd be, if something were to happen to such a vital and precious memory...

Even if Symbology *is* a dev, complaining to them rarely helps.

There must be a way to duplicate them. Perhaps not with the recipe, but hand constructed?

Let's find Canis. We needs some cannon fodder. We should also start looking for more party members and either join a good aligned guild or make our own.

And we must find a bard, for when we manage to build "the axe" and bring metal into this world. We'll need ale, lots and lots of ale when we succeed.
>>
Clearly we are in a dream world. How else would you explain the existence of words like 'symbology' which would only exist in the minds of madmen.
>>
>>31377926
Symbology IS an actual word my friend. It's in the dictionary. It is "the study or use of symbols". So the true master of the English language understands and uses the word when appropriate. Also makes a good character name, like any seldom used or understood word.
>>
>>31377698
And that one thing is to find Canis and complain about it. It's not like talking to devs actually accomplishes anything. You wander around the city until you find your wolf-haired friend. You wave at him, he waves back, and the two of you meet in a sand swept street.

"You doing okay?" He asks you.

"Oh course." You respond, "I'm pretty sure I'm the only one who's doing okay. I mean, have you seen half of the people here?"

"Yeah... about that..." He continues, "Are you sure you're doing okay? I mean, you've been going on about levers and stuff."

"Oh, don't get me started about levers! They nerfed levers so hard, it's not funny."

"W... What do you mean they nerfed levers."

You hold out the two types of levers, "See? This one was made before all this happened." You motion to the True Lever, "And the one was made after." You motion to the False Lever.

"Uhuh." He looks quite concerned now.

"Don't look at me like that." You put the levers back in your inventory, "Everything is perfectly fine, I'm just trying to perfect flight is all. It's that simple."

"And you're do that with levers?"

"And cloth." You add, "Levers and cloth. I'm not an idiot."

Canis remains silent for a while and then asks, "And you're sure this has nothing to do with the fact that your brother's all the way in Big Apple?"

You shrug, "I'm sure he's fine. He'll just pop back over when he's done raiding."

The wolf-man looks around, he looks like he's not telling you something. You can feel it.

"What's wrong?"

"The city gates don't work anymore. He's stuck over there unless he starts walking back."

We perfect the flying machine and fly to the Big Apple in an airship in a long epic journey to rescue our brother.

So bro is in 'Murrica. Great, they'll need to discover astrology and ship building before he can even attempt a voyage at least. If the world is based off the real one to the degree implied by the setting then the stars in the sky ought mimic what you'd expect. Meaning navigation by such means is potentially within the grasp of an adventurer. Provided he/she hasn't died a whole lot that is. Damn memory penalty for dying.

Plus hey, lots of MMO players in 'Murrica. At least someone can into astrology that got caught up in this shit. And in NY? TONS of people there, thus increasing the odds. Hope he's smart enough to realize all that.

We should join a crafting guild so we can have the supplies we need to perfect our flying machine

We're in 'Murrika too, South Angel to be precise.

So we're in Los Angeles and he's in New York, automobiles and planes don't exist (YET!), and the teleport gates are down.

Time to load up our wagon with 1x hat, 100x levers, and 100x grandfather clocks and do some reverse-Oregon-Trail.

So a cross continental journey eh? Sounds like fun, especially if the ruins of the highway system still exist. 'Murrica does have that going for it in post-apocalyptic setting after all. Oh the instances and towns along the way of the once great roads that bound a forgotten great empire together, so much to explore and learn. Hopefully bro is of a similar mindset and we meet halfway somehow.

As I live in Indy I wonder how they're doing, many roads run through that area after all, bet they're about to see a lot of "outsiders" crossing through in the coming months if said ruins do exist and are somewhat intact.
>>
Shouldn't bro head back to his home city when he dies? Or does setting foot in a city reset your spawn point?
>>
>>31378457
Going into a city resets your spawn point.
>>
>>31378457
Yep. Once you enter a "city" you will respawn in that city's chapel if you die.

Now we just need a party of scrubs of similar level to ourselves and we'll have a proper Scrub Horizon going on.

Maybe by the time we reach the east coast we'll be not-scrubs.

We'll probably be in South Angel for a while though, because it's going to take some trial-and-error before we get the hang of long-range wilderness romps. Not to mention we need to level up probably before we brave the Deathclaw infested deserts, or the Sasquach and Bear infested forests if we decide on a northern route.

Entering a new city sets your spawn point to that city.

Sounds like you've been playing the Fallout Series dude. I approve, good shit. Deathclaw claws make great blades after all, need to make a dagger or sword out of one of them. Gotta farm the good mats to equip ourselves and our buddies with the finest gear for to kill the enemy. I shudder to think of a "Deathclaw King" event. Goblins ain't shit compared to that kind of fucktard...

So, party member predictions aside from ourselves and Canis:

1. Grumpy Elf girl with a fake word for a name.
2. Some loli, can't be a scrub party without a loli.
3. Totally-not Leeroy Jenkins.
>>
>>31379147
>grumpy elf girl
No way. I refuse to vote to have anything to do with her, and she has no reason to want anything to do with us, let alone cross the continent.
>>
>>31379178
I'm predicting that solely based on the fact that she was one of the very few named characters introduced in the first thread, and that generally means she'll be relevant somehow.

Maybe Canis is the one to befriend her and we're just his crazy friend as far as she's concerned.
