Notes on Rolls and Voting:

When I request rolls, each set of three rolls counts for one action. For example, a two-step plan would take the first 6 linked rolls. A particularly bad failure can interrupt a string of actions.

When rolling 1d100, I will consider criticals within the first ten linked rolls. Only criticals that occur in the first three rolls will be counted as "supercrits". This is still the case even if you'd have plan long enough to require more than ten rolls.

When rolling 1d20, the rules are the same, but I only consider criticals for the first five rolls, rather than ten. Criticals in the first three are still "supercrits".

When a plot choice results in extensive debate, I'll try to weed out the most popular trains of thought, and then call a vote on them. When voting, please respond with only a link back to the post and the number corresponding to your opinion. Other votes are discounted, including those with dice rolls or extra spaces.

Finally, note that this is not a democracy; it is a benevolent dictatorship.

Recent Events Summary:

Hecate agreed to take Auriel to see Donovan within his dream, though things between them aren't particularly peachy. While they were gone, you had a strange conversation with Adavan, in which he implied that Hecate's goals might not align with your own. You also learned that Hecate can hear any nearby telepathic speech, reguardless of if it was directed only at particular persons or not.

Auriel informed you that while Charmeine is stuck in her position as a moderate influence within the Ring City, the more enigmatic Raphael wants to speak with you the following morning. In the meantime, you're going to see Fang and cook up some airship-related trouble for Kan-Abar's forces.

Duke Vellik was also meeting with Fang; he apparently wanted to retrieve a few undisclosed items from a secret cashe outside Evinbrook. You broke into and pocketed the Bolt, one of Kelvere's airships, which created quite a distraction. After leaving an illusory army behind to fool the demon lord, you're gliding back to rondevouz with the duke on the other side of the river.

The duke revealed that he'd saved three empty dynamo shells. By working with Steward, you were able to charge up three dynamos with the Shadow element using the Shadow mana pool at Haven, along with a chunk of your own life force. In exchange for charging them, you kept one of them for yourself.

You spoke with Raphael that morning. While he still stands with the Ring City, he made it clear that if push came to shove, he would not support Sandalphon's plan.

You decided hunt for patrolling airships. After spending the day scouting the border between Arland and Kelvere, ran across the Incision, a Water-powered long-range gunship. You made quick work of the the engineering crew and Pocketed the airship.

You're returning to the Nemesis to feed your aquisition to your growing carrier ship, with plans to strike at the enemy airforce once more before they have a chance to fortify their naval defenses.

>Last time...

You can't get caught in this. It looks hungry.

You look down, and in a Blink, you're on the ground, safe and sound.

You can't help but look back up. You're shocked by what you see. There's a face in a sky - a skull, a screaming ghoul, formed in the outline of the winds. The shrieks build to a crescendo of howling anguish. Ghostly faces rip apart the helpless crew like scraps of paper. Nothing makes it out. Nothing.

You're glad you decided not to stay. You doubt you would've gotten much of anything out of that mess...

Considering the maelstrom you've baited, it would probably be a good idea to keep flight to a minimum for a little while. But then, you'll just have to keep at it as needed. Duty calls.

The sun is on the edge of the horizon, now, a half-exposed gold disc. It's about 7pm in the evening. You're just west of the Evinbrook Basin, in the Kanian Hills.

You decide that you need to allow the Nemesis to snack on the Incision - and then go hunting once more, before the enemy has a chance to adjust to your strategy. The fewer airships on their side, the better.

You create a portal back to Arland. From the roof of the castle town, you can easily see the Flooded Gardens, where the Nemesis has been landing. You're in luck - the slight indentation of mud and grass tells you that the ship has touched down for the day. The cloak remains on, however - you all want to hide how much the Nemesis has grown, of late.

You fly down to the Nemesis. You're familiar with the structure, so it's not too hard for you to find the invisible entrance. That, and Haven's mages, while spread through the gardens on guard duty, are slightly more concentrated around the hidden ramp. You make your way through the halls and glass-covered courtyards to the bridge.

Tyrael is standing at the control console, looking over the ship's health display and idly tweaking nobs. There seems to be a screen which gives varying views of the ship's own internal structure. That would be very useful if it was ever boarded.

"Tyrael."

He flinches slightly, then turns to face you. "Light. Shadow. Hi there." He frowns. "That's funny. I guess the ship's systems can't detect you."

"Where's Auriel?"

"Auriel? She's training with Ila and Abigail down below. They've been going at it all day. They even had food brought into them. The captain's obsessed with something at the moment. Did you say anything to her?"

"...I helped her see Donovan on a Dream Walk. That might have something to do with it."

"...you really are a strong mage," Tyrael says. "Well, I guess that probably motivated her. How are things going?"

"I caught another airship," you say. "The Incision."

Tyrael's eyes glow with the sort of evil anticipation you might expect from a child about to kick down a sandcastle. "The Incision, huh? You, uh...have any plans for it?"

"I think you know. And I want to pick up another one before they start figuring out what I'm doing."

"Say no more." Tyrael picks up device wired to the control console. "This is Lieutenant Tyrael. All hands to the Nemesis. I repeat, all hands return to the Nemesis. Takeoff is in five minutes." He punches a few buttons on the console. You feel Wind hum under the ship. "I'll get us over to a ravine a little upriver. That should be quiet enough." He points at a map of Venia on the console. "By the way, the Jump Drive is working. Steward told us it would probably take about 5 days to charge back up after using it."

"Good to know. Should we get the ladies?"

"Eh," Tyrael says. "If I interrupt the Captain, she'll just yell at me."

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2A5e8_8TDQQ

About a half-hour later, the Nemesis lands in a wide gully along the Kanian Feed. You fly out behind the ship and unPocket the Incision so that it sits between the docking arms extending from the back of the carrier. The Nemesis's docking systems automatically hook the ship in. You fly back and land on the edge of the gully just as the cannabilization begins.

The Incision is split apart. Black beams drive into the seams and cracks between the armored plates, and they separate, floating into the air. The various armored pieces morph as they rotate about the Nemesis, slowly Inking into a solid jet black.

The heavy armor slams into place on the front edges of the ship. The carrier is simply too large for the Incisions parts to reinforce every single part of the ship, but the bow-end is now heavily protected from frontal fire. The glass-walled bridge and arms control center are now equipped with heavy metal shutters to protect them from direct physical damage. The innards, rooms, storage space, and halls connect with the back of the Nemsis, adding significant extensions to several of the decks.

The long-range cannon of the Incision drifts to the top of the ship. Purple energy crackles as it settles into a niche that seems to have grown for the sole purpose of accomodating its shape. It is now by far the largest and heaviest gun the Nemesis controls. The Water dynamo fits into place below that main cannon, which makes sense, being the main power source for the weapon itself.

The Nemeis should be able to produce its own fresh water with that core, too - a small but important tactical advantage.

The Nemesis seems less like a carrier, and more like a floating city. In time, it just might become that. You wonder - with and Earth dynamo, could they effectively produce some of their own food?

When you return to the bridge, the ladies are all waiting for you. Auriel is lecturing a sheepish-looking Tyrael. "Show a little judgement, why don't you. For something like this, it's alright to put the brakes on training. This kind of thing is important."

Ila smiles when she sees you. "Shadow. You've been busy lately."

"Just a little."

"Ah, Mr. I-can-do-everything-by-myself in the flesh," Auriel says. "Don't think you're going airship hunting again alone."

"It might be easier if I went alone," you tell her. "I can pocket the whole thing myself."

Auriel waves you off. "Flying that much in the open is dangerous. You'll be a lot less effective in battle if you can't even take wing because the skyserver is targeting you."

"I want to help, too, Shadow," Abigail says. "You shouldn't have to do all the work alone."

"...I just don't want anyone to get hurt."

"Nonsense," Auriel says. "Besides, there's something I want to try."

"What's that?" you ask.

"That armor on our front side is pretty significant," Auriel says. "We'll have to see about using it."

"For what?"

"Stick around and find out," she says. She pushes Tyrael's shoulder. "Get out of my chair."

Tyrael hops out of the console as if stung. Auriel seats herself. The chair automatically adjusts for her height, raising her up an extra few inches to the main control consoles.

>let Auriel take the lead

If we wanna go Airship hunting, let's do it.
>>
I love how if we ever give grand tours of the Nemesis to anyone knowledgeable about the worlds' airships they'll be able to pick out which ships we took by looking at which kinds of dynamos we have and which ships went missing.

but they still won't know what happened ehe he heh heeh AHA HAHAHAHAA

>>
I just had an evil idea.

Who wants to assimilate a Gundam?
>>
>>31390725

With a full-on frontal assault by the Nemesis, we should actually have a pretty easy time infiltrating other ships.

I'm hoping we score at least another two airships by the time of the battle. At some point, though, it will be more tactically efficient to keep these other Airships rather than continue to add them to the Nemesis.
>>
>>31390702

The Nemesis is totally going to be the Centre-piece of the Peace-keeping military which will be implemented thusly removing the requirement of anything more than a police militia for each nation...

Actually aren't some of Velliks former ships out on patrol for the Kanians around Kelvere somewhere?
Maybe we should objectify which airships would be best to take.

>>31390590
Ask Auriel if she knows which enemy ship has the best DETECTION systems! If we take that one then we get them instead, and they can't be used against the Nemesis.
>>
I wonder if it would be possible to create some sort of humanization chamber to create soldiers?
>>
>>31390791
I'll second this statement. We are still mostly a trump card secret to be pulled at the best opportunity. Even the Kan-Abar spies should only know that it's an invisible weaponless carrier.
>>
>>31390426
Curse you SM. I wanted to go and sleep tonight. Guess that plan just went out the window.
>>
>>31390590
I was going to say let's hold off on cannibalising the airship until we can figure out how to integrate individual parts. My main worry was that with all these miscellaneous parts and armor being added, the engines and their power system might not be able to keep up, and the ship would become too massy, but I guess it's done now.

Is that still something to worry about?
>>
>>31390872
Shouldn't end up being an issue with the airships' dynamos being integrated as well.
>>
>>31390872

Eh, if anything, I'd see that the individual dynamos would become less interdependent and more networked - i.e. the Wind dynamo focuses more and more on actually powering the flight of the ship, while the Shadow dynamo becomes more relegated to basic functions and the stealth module, etc.
>>
>>31390872

we can always just install more Dynamos..... we give the airship carcases to Velik and feed their Dynamos to Nemesis... He has two shadow dynamos to replace whatever cores we appropriate...
>>
>>31390838
Now we're thinking like an ELEMENTAL.

Also, something I noticed about our construct, automaton, and Machina Vita abilities.
They have no limits on how many we can make except materials and how many we can "command."

SM, is the Command Limit a hard number amount limit? As in, if we made a Golem besides Shade could it still listen to somebody elses command or are we stuck with just one robro?
>>
>>31390918

This is actually a pretty good idea.

If we ever need Dynamos of a different element, we can always remove them from the Nemesis's Core and replace them with more Shadow Dynamos.
>>
>>31390902
It could compress dynamos of the same type into one.
>>31390923
We can only command one at a time.

>>
>>31390902
>>31390916
>>31390918
Power was only my secondary concern here really. What I mean was we're increasing the ships mass with lots of auxiliary armor. Taking the parts is fine, but what happens to the heavy structural components they're built on? It's adding mass to the ship, and I don't want to be caught in a fight and find out that we can only accelerate barely fast enough to get away, you know?

Plus, I think it would just be cool to experiment with the cannibalisation function.
>>
>>31390923
I think I know where you're going with this, anon.
Because provided the right materials we could make a cheap maintenance labor force for the Nemesis that work directly as servants for our forces inside. But they need power cores, man.
>>
>>31390977

A fair point.... in that case, we shall add more engines...
>>
Can we go steal the Velarions wreckage now?

So, guys, from the talk with Steward earlier we can conclude that Venia itself is pretty much a dynamo, and much like dynamos to fuel things around them, I get the feeling that all magic (except perhaps Order magic, which probably comes from the Void Beyond/Erebus' void castle thing) in the end is drawn from the chaos core. The reason magic has been growing rampant for the past few hundreds of years is because of the core becoming more and more unstable.

I'm surprised so little speculation came from that dialogue, despite how much it implied. I mean, Venia itself would be the "fifth layer". The very world around the Chaos Core is akin to the HP we sunk into the shadow dynamo. I'm getting a feeling we're heading towards a sort of Tiamat-style creation of Venia (for those unfamiliar with the goddess Tiamat: she basically died and her body was split in two, one part forming the sky and the other the earth).
>>
>>31391102

>It could compress dynamos of the same type into one.
If this were the case, it'd be 100% worth the chance of suffering minor power drops in order to confirm that there's a way to modify intact dynamos (and by extension their casings) without breaking them.

>>31390977
The point was that the dynamos used to have to power their respective ships' engines in addition to auxiliary systems.

With the cannibalized ships' dynamos power now being focused on specific systems, it takes strain off of the main dynamos that would otherwise have needed to augment those systems. The Lightning dynamo can put full power to weapons, Water to the primary cannon and habitation functions, Shadow to shielding and Wind to propulsion, rather than all four dynamos each needing to handle propulsion/shielding/weapons/etc simultaneously.

Amusingly, this sort of compartmentalization of function in an attempt to optimize performance is exactly what Erebus was doing by splitting himself into Shards to begin with.

If he could somehow get past the fact that we're doing it with Chaos as the power source, OG Erebus would probably be proud.
>>
>>31391195
And in times of emergency power can be diverted.

Say for example we really need to book it out of there and shooting does no good we can divert power from the Lightning Dynamo to the Engine for a boost.

Let's just be sure that The elements aren't opposites. I think we could get High/Low to work together but not direct opposites.
>>
>>31391169
It's interesting enough to speculate about the world's lore, and SM occasionally throws us a bone saying if we're thinking in the right direction. I think most immediate concerns have been well discussed at this point.

I guess we'll learn a lot more about it once we actually get the time to try and reach Erebus' void castle.
>>
>>31391195

You know, this might be retarded, but maybe part of the reason Erebus split himself up in the first place was the recognition that he was fundamentally incapable of achieving his goal, whatever it was, in his correct mindset.

Maybe he was setting up a kind of schizophrenic personality battle of all his component selves in the hope that the strongest and best personality would win out and find a solution to the problem that he could not.
>>
>>31391273
Nah, he almost did.

If we hadn't choson to save abby then he would have.
>>
>>31391273
But he was capable of winning, in fact he almost did and he would have if not for us
>>
>>31391270
Some of the speculation I'd like to figure out but haven't are the major threads of info that we've been given directly in character the past few threads, that like Hecate we don't really know what we do we just 'do,' and that we don't really understand completely how our powers work.

It's been nagging me personally since there's been five total instances where it's been emphasized over the most recent threads, and it may be hinting at something we're missing about ourselves right now...
>>
"Auriel, we can produce our own water now, correct?"

"Well, what else would a water dynamo be good for?"

"So what about an Earth dynamo?" you say. "If we could feed ourselves, or even just produce some food, the Nemesis could stay airborne for even longer."

"...the space required makes that tough," she says, "but we could do it with just water. Still...the Earth dynamo might help quite a bit...hmm..." She nods to herself. "Alright. Everyone strap in!"

Auriel slaps a black button near the top of the console. You feel a tremendous Shadow pour forth from the shadow dynamo and wrap the ship. That must be the stealth reactivating. The Nemesis rises out of the gulley. The Wind around the ship redirects itself to the rear, and you leap forward at a tremendous pace. You grab a nearby railing for balance. The others already took seats at the table behind the console, at the top of the bridge. Apparently they were expecting the lead foot of a captain.

"Don't get too carried away," you say. "We want to keep things secret for the battle."

"Obviously." Auriel leans over the console. "Trust me, Shadow. I've been at this for a long time."

----------
----------

It takes you about four hours to locate an airship. By then, it's nightfall. Clouds have moved in, and the moon isn't out - it's relatively dark.

The glowing lights of the Green Oasis grow in front of you. It's a relatively large ship - bigger than any others besides you own that you've seen thus far. Even from here, you can feel its churning Earth dynamo keeping the winds of the world at bay. It is equipped with a variety of guns, but its main distinguishing feature is its heavy armor plating.

>>
The Nemesis cruises above it, quietly gaining altitude at a safe distance. "What kind of ship is it?" you ask.

"Juggernaut class," Auriel says. "It's the kind to break fleet lines, withstand direct fire. You made me think of it, to be honest. We've got more armor, now, but the Nemesis is a huge target. That's the kind of upgrade we need."

"Ok," you say. "I can go on alone from here."

"Heh." Auriel keys in something on the console. The Nemesis's targeting systems lock onto the enemy ship.

"You're firing?" Abigail asks. "I mean, that new gun is big, but - "

"Not firing," Auriel says. "Ramming." She grabs the intercom device. "Gunners, to your stations! All hands, brace for impact. I repeat, all hands, brace for impact, now. I'm not kidding. You'd better get a grip on something!" She slaps the receiver back onto the panel.

"Captain, that's nuts!" Tyrael says. "We can't punch through its armor to board!"

"We don't need to." Auriel flips open a switch and thumbs it down to a particular part of the menu - Cannibalize. She hits the button. "Hang on!"

She guns the ship forward. The Nemesis rockets down from the cloudline at a tremendous speed. The oblivious Green Oasis cruises below you, oblivious to the impending black death descending upon it.

Auriel thumbs up another control dial. The armored shutter flaps down over the bridge with a rickety clanging, sealing itself tight, and cutting off your vision.

A moment later -

-BOOOM-

Shadow, Water, Wind, and Lightning explode against a wall of earth. The sound of shrieking steel rocks the bridge. The armor in front of the window bends and buckles, but the glass is unharmed. After a moment, the sound stops. The armor straightens itself back out, forced by the ship's magic energy into its original position.

Auriel thumbs the shutter back open. And then you have a view of something you'd need to see to believe.

>con't
>>
The docking limbs of the Nemesis have moved. Like long, grasping hands, they've rotated to grip the Oasis, forming a sort of four-pronged mouth. The ship is being carved up by the black tractor beams. Slices of armor move from the ship and onto the Nemesis, or float around the sides, attaching themselves here and there in some pre-calculated order you don't yet understand.

"Light!" Tyrael shouts. "We're eating an airship!"

<Awesome!> Abigail shouts to you. <This is just like you, but...bigger!>

The Oasis steadily falls apart. Once its dynamo is separated from the fuselage, the angry Winds begin to slice and hack at the rest of it. You see crewmen plummeting into widening gaps, or torn apart by the magic. It's like a floating earthquake combined with the storm force of a hurricane.

In moments, the vast majority of the enemy airship is free and clear, claimed by the Nemesis as the spoils of victory. The carrier's guns begin to fire, shooting bolts of Lightning powered by the Ragnarok's old dynamo into the chaos of wind and shredded adamantium. Cleanup is swift and sure. The mages on the bridge cheer and slap hands.

Just two minutes after impact, the Nemesis reactivates its stealth. The Earth dynamo inserts itself toward the back of the ship, and the deck extensions grow still longer. Every window has an armored shutter, now - you'd only seriously be in danger if an enemy fired on the carrier from directly behind or above it. Assuming you didn't just absorb the magic, anyway.

>con't
>>
"What's the earth dynamo powering?" you ask Auriel.

"Seems like general systems power," she says. "It's reinforcing the adamantium armor, too. Though...I'm not even sure this thing is made of adamantium anymore. Damn." She rubs the console lovingly. "Who's a good girl? Was that a nice snack?"

"...I think the captain is going crazy," Tyrael mutters to you.

"I heard that!"

"...shit."

"It's getting late," Auriel says. "Let's head back. We can't exhaust ourselves before the main event."

What do you do now?

Yeah, I've been a bit worried about Hecate too. I'm getting the feeling that we won't be able to entirely get her to cooperate with what we have in mind. Seems like she intends to rule SOMETHING no matter what.

>"...Also this combat-untested function is the one that, if discovered, would reveal that we're capable of integrating the other "missing" airships into the Nemesis rather than having to rely on multiple crews, thus potentially revealing ALL of our unknown capabilities simultaneously."

>"...And also we know from the first Cannibalize attempt that the consumed ship is physically integrated in a way that doesn't harm the crews, because otherwise it would've smashed Tyrael into paste. Which means that could possibly risk distributing the enemy airship's crew of unknown ability and composition seemingly at random all throughout our ship."

Hoooooly shit, this could've gone wrong in so many ways. Not that it wasn't awesome and that Auriel cooing over Nemesis isn't entirely adorable in a kind of weird way, but still.
>>
Shouldn't we put some Shadow Totems on the Nemesis?

We should also remember that we may want to change the anchor to the planned battlefield again, as well. Just in case we need to skeedaddle from Kan-Abar to the front lines.
>>
>>31391828
Pourquoi?

Vellik can have his Kelvere ships.

But Kan-Abar's airships are surely fair game.

I mean sure, Prince Obis might want them back after the war. But he can consider it restitution for the war thing.
>>
Maybe we should run a sweep of the Nemesis for intruders?
>>
>>31391856
It would be a minor cost at worst.
>>
You decide to talk to Ila and Auriel about lord Waterford.

Unfortunately, they don't really have much to report on that front. They've been so busy with everything else that investigating him in depth might have to wait until after the war.

You then decide to tell Abigail about Hecate. You relate to her what Adavan said to you, especially emphasizing how Hecate doesn't seem to obey the normal rules where telepathy's concerned.

"...I don't know how I feel about that," Abigail says. "I don't like the idea of her spying on everything just by being there. But...I want to believe she has good intentions."

"So do I," you say, "but Adavan was careful in telling me that before she returned from the Dream Walk. In fact, he threw it in right at the end, just before she got back. He wanted to make sure I knew that."

"...why do you think?"

"The only reason that makes sense," you say, "is if he's a little worried himself. Freeing her from her seal has been his only goal for so long. Now that she's back - well, maybe it's shaking him up. He might be realizing from the comparison how much the world has changed. How everyone's moved past the elemental lords, learned to live without them."

"I don't want conflict with Hecate," Abigail says. "I think that she can help us. I want her to help with Archon, to help our people. But if she thinks she has some sort of innate right to choose things for us, then we might hit a rough patch."

"Yeah. My thoughts exactly."

"Ok. I'll talk with my uncle about it, too."

"Are you sure?"

"He needs to know," she says. "We prepare for the worst. But hope for the best."

"Yeah. Good point."

The ship arrives in Arland not long after midnight. Some of the crew return to the castle; others stretch their legs briefly before returning to their quarters. The ship was relatively spacious before, but now you don't have nearly enough people to fill the halls. Maybe, in time, Haven will grow.

You decide that you need to check in with Melody and Fang on the status of the Staff of Winds. Luckily, neither of them need sleep.

You walk up through the castle to the Black Lady's suite. You knock on the door.

"Just a moment," comes a woman's voice.

The door cracks open. Melody stands there.

She's wearing a blood red dress. You'd describe all her outfits as almost excessively conservative, but this is...revealing.

"...Melody?"

"Shadow." She clears her throat. "What is it? I was...about to retire, for the evening."

You smell wine on her lips.

"...I was wondering about the Staff of Winds. I know you were hesitant about its use in the upcoming battle..."

Melody looks down, then back up. "...I've...I think I have reconsidered, Shadow. The Archmage has plans to bring up his fleet alongside three of his airships. They're already modified for the task, so I don't believe he'll be making use of Haven's craft."

"Good." You awkwardly shuffle back. "Well, good night."

"Yes. Good night."

She shuts the door - but not before you have time toe extend your senses into the room. No hiding that pressure of Spirit - Yi fang is inside.

The wood clicks closed, and the enchantment Melody uses to keep her privacy glows back into place.

Steward tells you that your Kinetic Bombardment project will be completed 24 hours before the battle. You can pick up the shaped charges at that time.

----------
----------

You try to decide what to do. You don't just want to rest on your laurels. Everything that can be done before the battle must be done.

You shards could definitely use some strengthening. If you get caught without them in reserve, you could take a beating. It's been more than 24 hours since you started attacking airships - the enemy has probably caught onto the fact that their navy is being attacked. But one less airship to deal with means you have that much more of an advantage...

You stand in the Shadow mana pool at Haven, holding aloft the Shadow dynamo. You couldn't be dipped in more Shadow if you tried.

And then you mediate. You feel yourself grow still. Your mind relaxes. You seek the shards of power within yourself and push that force you feel around you into them.

It feels a bit more effective than usual. But...though you strengthen their core Orderly structure, the Chaos holding them together still takes time to grow.

Despite that, your work goes as well as you could have hoped.

(Ardor) - Strong
(Maker) - Empowered

It's now about noon. You have 60 hours left until the attack.

You notice a few robots observing you from the edges of the mana pool. Perhaps they're relaying information to Steward? Good, he'll probably need all the date he can get.

What do you do?

Guys I had a thought.

What if we could plug the Shadow Dynamo into Abby's power ARMour like a boost battery or something? We could probably even pop it back out afterwards.

Or we could put it into the Nemesis for to double the power on one of the systems and even further reduce the time required on the Jump Drive charge. Right now the ship only requires 2 or 3 days. Imagine how cool a ship that could jump DAILY would be.

"Shadow, you must wake from your slumber. Shadow. Shadow, you must wake from your slumber. Shadow. Shadow, you must wake from your - "

"Steward?" You blink your eyes open. Steward isn't there - one of the robots has a mouth open, though, and a small speaker is projected through it.

"Yes. I have been trying to contact you for one hour. It seems that Matthel Flint has escaped his holding cell. The time of his escape is currently unknown. It is recommended that you return to Arland immediately. Our allies are convening below the castle as we speak."

You immediately Pocket your dynamo and manaport to Arland.

In a flash, you're back at the castle. It doesn't take you long to find your allies - they're down in the dungeons.

Matthel's cell was relatively plush; a decorated room with a large bookshelf. The bars in front of it, however, are melted open. The steel curves inward, suggesting that the spell worked from the outside, in.

Fang, Melody, and Auriel are there, along with Arcturis. Valeria Kavanere and Hemmelus are examining the bars. Hemmelus prods at the melted ends with his fingertips.

You stride forward rapidly. "What happened?"

"He escaped, is what happened," Arcturis barks. "And he had help. The damn angels found out we were holding him down here."

"How?"

Fang shrugs. "It was a matter of time. We excused his absence by saying he was busy working with other noble houses, but there's a lot of coordination between the various parts of our combined army. Sandalphon would have surmised that he wasn't anywhere in plain sight, and then he'd draw the obvious conclusion from Metatron's absence."

"You don't seem very worried."

"He's barely recovered from overusing the Windburn. He won't be able to contribute to the battle." The archmage shrugs. "A minor moral victory for his core of zealots. I care not."

>con't
>>
>>31393474
Good point. Steward is a bro, but we don't really need a ship AI.
>>
>>31393403
We could also look into integrating some of Va'ad's machinery, and some of Steward's drones. It's cool that the ship's water dynamo can produce clean water, but imagine if it had an internal factory that could mass-produce things like cruise missiles and drone aircraft. It's already capable of repairing docked ships, but I don't think it can manufacture whole vessels. Yet.

"Well, I do," Artcuris says. What he needed was to sit down here for a good long time and think things through. Now Sandalphon will get him pumped up again. Matthel. Dammit." Arturis grips the intact bars with his hands. "...I always thought he was the reasonable one. Shows what I know."

"Yes," Auriel says, "it does." Arcturis frowns, but says nothing. Auriel steps forward. "What?" she asks. "No biting response? No sarcasm? No gruff words from the Lord of Arland?"

"What is it you want from me, Highest?"

"If it wasn't for your own foolishness," she says, "Matthel wouldn't have turned into one of Sandalphon's cronies right under your own beard. Your eldest wouldn't be a selfish heap of arrogance. And Donovan wouldn't be where he is right now!"

"You try raising four boys without their mother, and tell me how it works out for you."

"A poor excuse if you ask me!"

"Auriel," you say, "maybe some fault lies with the Lord Flint. It's also true that he wasn't told the whole story. Either way, this is not the time to fight amongst ourselves."

She takes a long, shuddering breath, then heaves it back out. "...we need to find him."

"Really?" Fang asks. "How are you going to do that?"

"...I don't know. Shadow?"

"I could try to locate him."

"Don't bother," Fang says. "If I were Sandalphon, I'd put him on an airship and send it out of the way. And he definitely won't be letting you take a little tour of his navy any time soon."

"Then what are we going do about this?" you ask him. "Sandalphon wouldn't have gone out of his way to rescue Matthel unless he thought it would give him some sort of advantage."

"It surely will," Fang says. "Matthel will make an excellent meat shield when the time comes, and he can probably squeeze a bit more power out of himself before dying outright. Isn't that right, Lord Flint?"

Arcturis hasn't said anything since you spoke up in his defense. He doesn't meet Fang's gaze. In a way, Fang's comment was its own admonishment.

"Then we can't let it alone," you say. "We have to find Matthel."

"I'm telling you not to waste your time," Fang says, "or risk discovery by a certain angel who is quick to anger." He continues to look at you. <When the time comes, the Nemesis's cannons will surely slay Matthel from afar. The boy is too far gone, Shadow.>

You use Deep Focus.

Everyone glances at you as your senses reverberate off the walls of the dungeons. You don't pay much attention to the skies above, however, instead putting the weight of your Focus on the bars of steel.

"...it wasn't just Light," you say. "...fire. A small part of it was fire."

"I suspected the same thing," Hemmelus says.

Auriel takes a second look at the bars. She squints, moves in closer. "...this is that bitch's work, alright. Anahita."

"That's the 6th Highest, isn't it?" you ask.

"Yeah," Auriel says.

"I take it you don't think highly of her."

"Not in the slightest."

<Well, if you're that determined,> Fang tells you privately. <Anahita commands the Red Sun, which should be nearing Vischon right now. I can't aid you publicly. Stay quiet, get in, get out.>

What do you do?

>try to intercept the Red Sun immediately

Why was Adavan even bothering with the mission of four keys if only Erebus is suited for this mission of freeing her?

Kelvere - 4 Airships (now possessed by Kan-Abar)
>The Second Hand (wrecked)
>The Bolt - Lightning - short but speedy assault gunship (returned to Duke)
>The Inquisitor - Spirit - supply and support cargo ship
>The Incision - Water - long-range gunship (Nemesized)

Kan-Abar - 5 Airships
>The Burning Fist - Fire - long-range gunship
>The Pheonix Flame - Fire - assault gunship
>The Painted Sword - Fire - long, fluted ramming airship
>The Vanguard - Wind - fluted and narrow-tipped boarding airship
>The Green Oasis - Earth - Heavily armored Juggernaut (Nemesized)

The Inquisitor (formerly one of Vellik's airships) has a Spirit Dynamo. It is a relatively fast support and supply airship with medium armor. The duke was using it as a cargo ship.

The Burning Fist, the Phoenix Flame, and the Painted Sword all have Fire dynamos.

The Burning Fist is a long-range gunship, like the Incision. However, it forgoes the Incision's armor for more power to its main cannon.
The Phoenix Flame is a rapid assault gunship, not unlike the Bolt and Ragnarok.

The Vanguard has a Wind Dynamo. It is a small and exceptionally fast airship designed for ramming and boarding.

Dice gods know what they're doing.

Damn, those were pretty good rolls. You might collect the most passive bonuses you've ever had very shortly.

Alright, I'll write a nice scene with Abigail. Gimme a bit.

Another meditation puts you at ease. It was right not to dive after Matthel without thinking. You're glad Fang was there to set your head straight.

Your shards are rapidly approaching top condition, but Abigail enters your mind. You don't know if she's had much time to test out the full strength of her armor, practicing with Auriel and Ila - you'd probably be a better sparring partner. If there's an accident, well, you can take a hit.

You manaport to Arland and locate Abigail in a meeting room on a mid-level of the castle. She's actually speaking with Yong Xu and Tae Wong, the councilors, coordinating some last-minute affairs - but you catch them just as their wrapping up.

Xu gives you a stiff nod as he leaves the room. Wong, the general, is significantly warmer, gracing you with a smile as he departs. Abigail practically jumps at you.

You hold her in your arms. "Well, I'm glad you're happy to see me."

"...yeah. Too much stuff going on right now. What's up?"

"Well, I was thinking you should test the limits of your armor. Really see what it can do."

"I've been really wanting to do that. Where do you think we should go?"

"Well, I think a nice spot out in the Archon Highlands would be good. I doubt the angels would bring their navy anywhere close, and it should be isolated."

"Alright. Can you take us there?"

"Definitely."

--------
--------

You manaport to Archon and run with Abigail out far east of the city, deep into the cliff-studded highlands. You find a long steppe between two hills. Abigail sets your lunch on the grass behind one of the hills, and then you set yourselves a dozen yards apart.

"Watch this," Abigail says.

In just a second, she's completed coated in that heavy armor. Her scythe flashes into existence next to her, and she catches it in her hand and twirls it around.

"When did you learn to use pole weapons?"

<...in the dream,> she says. <Remember the dwarf?>

"I do."

<I...some things are fuzzy,> she says. <I can't even remember his name. But I remember what he taught me. At least, the me I was then.> She looks at her wide-angled scythe. <This isn't much different than a glaive. The timing's just a little different.> She holds the scythe in both hands, pointed at you. <Ready?>

Abigail swings her scythe at you in a flat arc.

You jump backwards, dodging. She jumps at the same time, following your movement - and now you can't dodge.

You automatically throw up sharpened arms to block. You remember too late that her scythe isn't really something that works like that. A rending gout from the void slashes through you, neatly cutting off your right arm and the better part of your body.

>you've taken 18 damage (63/81)

You both carry through the air. Abigail, though, isn't your usual foe - she won't be surprised when your body reforms in an instant. You take a swipe at her to keep her at bay.

She's suddenly not there - rather, behind you. But you've played the trick one too many times to be fooled. You're already turning, bringing around your arm in the shape of a long sword. But Abigail sweeps her arm back and out, relying on her heavy bracers to deflect the blow. Your arm is turned up and wide over her head.

The scythe strikes you again, catching you straight-on across your body.

>you've taken 22 damage (41/81)

Abigail jumps back as you reform yourself. <That's incredible. You can regenerate instantly?>

<Easy for you to say...> You grunt as your body stitches itself together like liquid ink. <It's not regeneration as much as it is keeping myself in one piece.>

You wave Abigail off for a moment, and Heal yourself several times.

>you've gained 28 HP (69/81)
>mana: 62/76

<I guess my scythe isn't a good weapon against you.> You're surprised she's still skeptical, but to her, it must look like nothing happened. Abigail raises her left hand. <Try this on for size.> Purple light flares in a disc on her palm. You sense a tremendous amount of shadow magic starting to rapidly build up.

What do you do?

Illusions explode to life around you. Several dozen copies of you split off in various directions; one takes to the air, most run along the ground. A wave of monsters, bats, feral wolves, and tentacled monstrosities fills the gaps between the obvious shades.

You let your human form dissolve and Blink away.

You're glad you did.

Abigail's magic flares. It turns into a purple wall of destruction that detonates in front of her. A massive cone-shaped hole is gouged in the ground. Dust and rubble flies into the air, smacking into the hill that marks the north boundary of your arena.

In the confusion, she seems to have lost track of you. A goodly portion of your illusions escaped the blast zone, and the sound they're making is a good distraction.

You flatten yourself out behind a small boulder and wait it out. Abigail turns. Her helm shifts back and forward, taking in the illusions.

She grips her scythe in both hands, grunts, and swings. A howling half-moon beam of Order roars out from her and pierces through one of your shadow clones. It vanishes.

And then you're behind her. You grab her under her arms, lift her into the air, and drive her back into the ground behind you.

Abigail flops onto the ground, rattled, rolling slightly. She gets up to a knee. You can hear her breathing through her helmet.

<Gotcha.>

<I guess you can't keep your hands off me.>

You freeze up a bit. "Uh, well, I mean, that's not what I - "

Abigail starts laughing. <Auriel was right. It's easy to tease you.>

"...not that easy."

<Heh.> You can practically feel her grin radiating out through her helmet. <Well, two can play at your stealth game.>

Abigail vanishes from sight.
