Hive Queen Quest 1: A Hive of One

You awaken. In your first moments of consciousness you take note of the vast nothingness that surrounds you. Your cocoon has been sealed within a pod and is now hurdling through the vastness of space. Your mind is immediately bombarded with data from the pod’s navigation unit. The Thinker drone is likely a brother of yours; born to keep your pod safe until you had developed sentience.

“New Queen! Worker worker! I find things, serve well?”

The thinker drone is giddy with excitement as it detects your presence, eager to help however it can. It seems to have been collecting sensor data while you slept, passively analyzing the stars. The constellations are unfamiliar to you, meaning you must be in uncharted space, and you detect no artificial signals from any star in range of your sensors, of course, your pod’s sensors don’t have very good range, so you can’t be sure.

Your pod is an oblong lump of organic mass grown around your cocoon in a protective shell and embedded within a small asteroid. An FTL device at the back and a small sensor suite at the front are the only things that would give away your small pod as anything other than a rock floating through the void of space. For now, your cocoon is able to provide all the life support you need, but your pod seems to be running on dwindling supplies. The thinker calculates that there is enough energy left for one FTL jump, but where will you go?

“I find! I find for you!”

The thinker leaps at the chance to help, collating the star data into various piles and running them through dozens of algorithms. Many of the stars show signs of having planets, but only a select few seem to be able to support life.
>>
>>31423707

The first is an arid planet in close proximity to its star, the day would likely be too hot for extended surface activity, and by the looks of it the system is filled with the debris of stellar formation. The planet would likely suffer regular asteroid impacts, although such impacts would have also made the planet very rich in metals and other such resources. Finding food and feeding your drones would likely prove difficult, but it might be worthwhile.

The second seems on the surface to be far more inviting, a lush temperate climate that shows all the signs of a world teeming with life. The abundance of nutrients would likely make starting up a hive much easier, but you suspect that with so much life competing with each other, evolution would have likely made more than a few dangerous predators. In addition, the heavy metals and compounds needed for more advanced industry don’t seem to be nearly as prevalent.

The third is an oddball. The planet’s orbit is highly elliptical, causing extreme temperature variations throughout the year. The atmosphere is incredibly dense with water vapor and other greenhouse gasses, making analysis of the surface impossible. On the bright side, the chance of life is very high, and water is clearly not hard to find, but nothing else can be discerned at this distance.
It seems your first decision as Hive Queen could very well be your most important one.

The best insects live in temperate areas anyway. Probably.
>>

That is correct. Nutrients are used to give birth to and feed your drones, metals are used to build hardened structures and more advanced equipment and modifications. One will come in handy immediately, the other will come in handy later.

3 for temperate, 2 for mystery so far, will keep voting open for a short while more.

"Do good?"

You reach out with your mind and direct the thinker's attention to the strange planet shrouded in cloud cover. The abundance of water holds the promise of life, and if you can't peer through the clouds, neither will any who would wish you harm. Or so you hope. You decide to take your chances.

The thinker plots a course and you feel your pod come to life with energy. In a blink you skip the distance of several lightyears and immediately assaulted with the pull of gravity and the battering of air against the outer shell. You can see nothing past the dense clouds, and have no way of knowing if the spot you land will be suitable. The thinker looks for a landing spot out of instinct and panics when he finds none. Your thoughts sooth the drone. You will have to steer it through the clouds and hope you land without incident.

"Fast! Too fast!"

Your pod falls into the atmosphere, quickly heating the rock shell and sheering off chunks in burning heaps. Your sensors quickly begin to burn, and the pod enters a tumble. As the last of the natural heat shield falls away you break through the cloud cover, only to find more fog. With your sensors in disarray it is all you can manage to try to slow the pod's descent with the last of its fuel. A sudden impact rocks the pod and you enter a spin. You can feel yourself rolling down until you come to a sudden stop.

"Queen, I am wounded!"

The thinker shows you signs of damage to the hull, and the sensors and drive systems have been burnt to a crisp. But you are both alive.

As the pod bleeds, you extend a series of eyes affixed to the side. They are useless in space, but prove to be just the tool you need to peer at your new home.

The air is thick with fog, and the ground is covered in a soft moss. Upon closer inspection it appears to be a sort of fungus. In fact, nearly everything seems to be a form of fungus, including the dense trees and vegetation. The air is saturated with spores of unknown varieties, but it holds plenty of oxygen to breath.

This is the place then, you must make your home here. Your cocoon shudders and cracks, and you struggle to break free. Eventually the chitinous armor gives way and you pull yourself free, slumping to the mold covered dirt. Your wings are weak and soaked with mucus, and your antennae are numb, but after a short time of grooming you feel yourself ready to move out.

Your six limbs are slender and elegant, as any queen's are, the front two perched up in front to serve as manipulators, your wings fall behind you like a cape to show your royal breed, and your head peeks in a magnificent crest to serve as a transmitter to broadcast your will to your drones. You are beautiful, and you will spread your beauty to this world.

All around you is dense fungal jungle, and your thinker pod still bleeds fluid on the ground.

Success! Soon the bleeding stops, the blood thickening into a crusty scab in the pod's hull. The thinker feels confused at your deed, he had expected to serve as your first meal, sacrificing itself for your survival.
"You serve well." Your thoughts are sent to it, and you can feel it nearly hop out of the crater it had made with glee.
"Serve well! Serve well!" It chants again and again.

Now how will you go about this jungle? The canopy is thick, but you hope instinct will help you where experience will not. You open your wings and with a rapid humming buzz that kicks up the mold you ready your takeoff

You launch yourself into the air, aiming for the hole your pod punched through the canopy, as small as it may be. Jumping from tree cap to tree cap you reach the top and punch through, your wing beats sending the spores into a torrent around you. The fog is difficult to see through, but you think you can see some shapes in the distance.

To the south is a rolling mass, moving across the land. A herd of something, perhaps?
The the east are a series of large shapes, standing idle at the edge of the jungle.
To the north the jungle continues, but a mountain can be seen in the distance, and the glimmer of something. A river, perhaps? Runs along its base.
To the west you see... nothing. A few rocky structures that lead off into what looks like a cliff, or at least a down-sloping hill. The land past it is featureless, but you swear you can see it shifting slightly.

A shrill screech can be heard in the distance. Your landing did not go noticed, but you do not see the source of the sound.

Thinkers don't have much of a physical form other than a brain. You dart toward the mountain to the north, a lone citadel standing in the foggy mists. You hope it holds a promising place to nest. As your wings send the spores of the air flying around you, you make out a strange sound. A high pitched hiss from above causes you to whip your head to the sky. You see a shape in the clouds! It banks to the side and dive bombs you, its cone shaped head split open like a radar dish. Your antennae pick up a piercing wave of infrasonic peeps as it homes in on you, now in free fall.

You flip and attempt to dive out of the way, but the creature's massive wing side swipes you. You feel the exoskeleton of your hind left leg snap, but the bone within seems undamaged, even still the pain is agonizing. The creature banks sharply, letting out a loud hiss as it gains a burst of speed and thrusts itself back toward the clouds.

You make your way to the canopy, ducking under the caps of the massive fungal trees for cover. You can hear the strange flying wing circling above for a short time before it moves on in search of a slower meal.

You hop from tree to tree, buzzing your way across the gaps. Your leg stings but the injury appears to be minor, and before long you make your way to the base of the mountain, and find the river that pours from the rock face. The liquid appears crimson in color, and runs slightly thicker than water should. You suspect it is filled with spores.

You follow the river up the mountain and find the source, a number of caves spaced across the mountain, the entrances are small, but the interior seems relatively devoid of spores, and the air is much cooler. You feel your way along the cave, tapping your claws along the wall to sense what lies beyond. The caves appear to be a network, likely carved out by the water. It could make for the beginnings of an excellent nest, although whatever is tainting the water may need to be cleared out before it could be called a proper home.

As you enter you find that the chamber is dimly lit my a bio-luminescent mass of fungus sitting in the center of the room in a pool of reddish jelly. The water seems to be filtered through the substance, taking the spores with it. You must admit the mass seems pleasant to the eye, although you are unsure if it is toxic or not. Removing it would be difficult and time consuming, but you detect no signs of activity around you, so you suspect you are in little danger at the moment.

You scoop up a claw full of the jelly and taste it, sloshing it within your maw before building up the nerve to swallow it, immediately you feel the effects of the toxin... which tastes oddly sweet for a deadly fungus. You let some time pass to ensure it has no ill effects, and soon you feel fairly certain that the only unusual thing about it is that it is a sweet fungal jelly. Perhaps none of this stuff is toxic? Perhaps it just happens to be fungus? With your hopes built up you move to the mound and taste a lump from it and immediately regret your decision. It doesn't just taste foul, it feels like it burns your mouth! You spit the substance up and spend several minuets choking on the residue.

Once you regain your composure you take a closer look at the substance. At the edge of the mound there appear to be small tendrils reaching out into the jelly, and the jelly itself seems to ooze from several dozen small sacs bulging from the side of the mount. It appears that the mound produces the jelly to absorb the water, and the spores it releases in the water hold some kind of nutrient contents.

You find it appropriate that your throne should ooze such a sweet substance. Your hive will flow with honey and you will sit upon the source of all life of the river valley below. Yes, this shall be your hive. Your abdomen is not yet swollen with the eggs of your eager children, but your first clutch will serve to set up your hive, and you suspect that the water will give them the nutrients they need. As your hive grows you will likely need to find alternate sources of food, but for now you are glad you can delay such worries.

You find a suitable spot in the chamber and begin your work. Your abdomen pops open and you release your egg sac, placing the bundle your precious children in an alcove. The first children are the fastest to hatch, but they will also be the weakest, as they have not adapted to the local environment. You spend the next day musing over the little blobs of oozing mucus, such adorable things they are, and soon they crawl forth. They are still small and feeble, but they are willing and able to work. Their simple minds link to your own and you feel their joy as they stand before you.

They eagerly await your orders, seeking only to make your will manifest. What are your first commands?

The pod can be a source of food, soon. Once we get it back to the hive, Thinker will no longer need it for protection (probably)
>>
>>31425889
The thinker drone is a logistics and support drone. They are best used to run infrastructure, but can also serve as command and control units when the drones around it are outside your range of control. Any roll done by a drone that is being assisted by a thinker will get a bonus, but a drone that is operating only via a thinker will get a penalty, which is still better then slipping into a coma.

Once you start building bigger things thinkers will become useful to operate sensors, defense systems starships, heavy industry and other such fun things. They are not sentient, but are the closest thing to it. If left alone, a thinker will perform the last order it was given, until it dies or it succeeds, if it succeeds it will attempt to return to you.

I change my response then, send 10 and accompany them as a denfense/deterrent, hopefully this way we can move it faster.
Set the other 10 to setting up a nest to better support our next batch of eggs

Question, is there a way to interface the Thinker with the Jelly mass?
>>
>>31426029
the mound produces the jelly, the jelly filters the water and releases spores into it. The spores hold a high nutrient content that can provide for the daily diet of a small hive, including yourself. So long as the mound and the water remain the food will flow.

>>31426032
any details you would like to specify as to the nature of the nest?
>>
>>31426032
i concur with anon.
>>
>>31426046
Something stream-lined, maybe dig out a shallow section the water (the jelly like nutrient stuff?) can flow into, like a lagoon. This way, even our fresh hatchlings can access the food in a relatively safe way, with nothing more than our command to "eat until reinvigorated"

Should be sturdy, who knows how heavy we'll get eventually when we're immobile and just churning out eggs. Are we able to make a nest out of rock at this point or just out of biomass?
>>
>>31426046
The deepermost part should be our throne room. There should be some dormitories for drones. They should begin tunneling around the mountain to anticipate further expansion.
>>

You watch with joy as your little dumplings march forth in search of your pod. With the thinker in hibernation you are unable to feel its thoughts, but you sense it is still alive within the jungle. Your workers make quick work down the mountain, climbing over each other to form ladders and bridges as they reach the river at the base of the mountain. Apart from the occasional screech from above nothing seems to be in the area. It is difficult to retrace your steps on the ground, but eventually you find signs of your crash. It must be near.

"Sounds!"

Your workers think in unison as they hear the jabbering of some creature, maybe several. The workers cannot tell, but you notice a distinct pattern to them. Could it be a language? Using sonic vibrations? The thought seems like madness to you, that any species that couldn't communicate mind to mind could ever develop language, but still, the patterns are there, and they seem to be coming from near your pod.

Your workers scale the mushroom trees with ease, their claws sinking deep into the soft trunks. One remains behind and approaches the sound, staying low and using the spore covered brush for cover.

"Queen! Queen! Things here, I find yes! Scary things poke at body!"

The thinker links back with you as it detects your drone's proximity.

"I learn code! Scary things make noise! I do well? See code!"

your thinker sends you a mass of thoughts. Patterns arranged seemingly at random, but the thinker sorts through the mess with impressive ease. He has indeed done well, and you let him beam with pride while you make sense of his data. It is a language using sonic vocal patterns, astounding! What's more, they seem to include minor visual expressions, although the thinker can't seem to make sense of them. Your drone moves in for a closer look.

They are ugly creatures, standing haphazardly on only two limbs. Four in total, they seem to have a strange, rubbery hide with patchwork symbols blazoned across it and a clear bubble covering their small, bulbous heads. Their eyes are small and appear ocular in nature, lacking your clearly superior compound eyesight they must be nocturnal creatures, or perhaps they use scent? Their noses are small and soft looking, as is the rest of their faces, and the tops of their heads are covered in matted fur of various colors. They poses two arms, and each of them is holding something. You suspect they may be weapons of some kind. You use the pattern the thinker assembled for you to decipher their garbled mess of a language.

"It ain't natural, i'm telling ya this thing looks like a ship of some kind."
"Well then where are the engines? Or life support? It doesn't even have a radio."
"I'm with Zoe on this, I think it's just another spore or something"
"Don't you see this thing? I swear this is circuitry! It's organic, I've never seen anything like it!"

They continue to argue over some petty nonsense.
>>
>>31426411
"Queen, Queen! They are digging in me!"

You notice one is tinkering in the opening to the pod from which you emerged. The others seem nervous, but this one is interested in your pod for some reason.

We could make a scary noise to scare them away.

You know, killing them would let us acquire their weapon for Thinker to examine.
>>
>>31426452
Your beautiful children are shorter than their next generation will be. Your current drones are over half the height of these things, but the next batch of adapted workers will be nearly equal in height, and warriors will be larger still.

Your workers posses powerful mandibles used for digging in rock and grinding it into powder, and long retractable blades within the manipulating claws used for tearing apart scavenged food, plowing soil, sawing building material and other such things. They could be used as natural weapons if the worker could close the distance.
>>

Yes, with drones there is no need to leave the nest. You are needed in the throne room to lay more eggs.
>>
>>31426598
What if we scare em off? Like, say, have one drone feign being hurt, make a noise in the bushes. When their attention's away from the pod, the other drones either scare the intruders off, or just heist the pod entirely.
>>
Guys, we're still at the nest and our drones are slow midgets. Let's just wait for them to leave.
>>
>>31426614
Of course, your workers are capable of performing dexterous tasks with their claws, as well as feats of brute strength.
>>
>>31426640
Then how about we have the drones pelt them with rocks from multiple angles and then scurry into the brush in an attempt to make them leave faster. They won't want to hang around the pod if they're getting pelted with rocks.

They never have to see our drones if we stay hidden in the brush, and if they go on the offensive to try and hunt down the rock throwers, we gank em in the forest.

Your drones stand idle, waiting for the creatures to loose interest in your pod.

"Okay, you found your space rock, now can we go? This forest is bad news. Ryan and Lyon never came back from that scouting mission, and something in here is making weird sounds at night, I haven't slept a full night since we set up camp."
"Oh buck up Zoe, if I can get this thing working we might be able to contact someone and get help!"
"Help from who? If this thing is a ship, do you really want to meet whatever came out of it? It looks like some kind of egg or something."

"Queen! They are digging in me!"

You feel you have no time to spare. You don't want to start a fight, at least not without knowing their capabilities, and certainly not with your first batch. Your workers scatter, surrounding the pod and begin chattering their massive mandibles.

"The fuck is that?" one of the creatures snaps his device upwards, whipping his head about in a frantic panic. "Shit, we need to go."

Your drones leap from mushroom cap to mushroom cap, presenting shadowy figures leaping past the creatures pitiful peripheral vision and shaking the trees as they move.

"Shit shit shit! Pack up your stuff Trevor, we're getting out of here with or without you!"
"Ok ok! What is that? I've never heard anything like this since we've been here."
"You can contemplate on that when it isn't about to eat us, come on!"

The four creatures begin running through the forest with great haste, much to your surprise. You would never had guessed a creature with two legs could move so quickly or with such balance. Regardless, they are easily frightened. Your drones quickly move in to take the pod and haul it back through the forest, making quick work of the journey up the mountain side. As you guide them up the cliff face you stutter your wings with the humorous thought of those strange beings fumbling at such a simple task.

Your workers have returned, and so has your thinker.

>>31427017
Wasn't sure. I figured I'd see how the first session went before I did that. My work schedule is a bit erratic so I'm not sure how helpful it would be.
>>
>>31427007
How fast do mutations happen?

Is it something that can be organized, like programs to install, or are each permanent and generally long-lasting choices that affect the whole population? How is the Queen affected by mutations, etc.
>>
>>31427058
I'm going to just assume you're really tired and don't realize how stupid what you just said is.

If your schedule is erratic, you -need- some way to inform players of thread times since you will not be able to set a standard quest schedule that you can stick to.
>>
>>31427081
As the queen you have full access to the genetic makeup of your workers. Any alterations must be done prior to laying the egg and will be permanent for the drone in question, but other that that you can alter them in any way you want, so long as it doesn't cause catastrophic organ failure. Modifying a bunch of stuff may require a roll to do it right. You will be able to pick from four drone types, and customize from there. Worker, warrior, thinker, and specialties. Specialties are single production drones that are build for a single unique purpose, and will usually need a thinker to control it properly.

>>31427088
I am tired, but what I meant was most days I don't know if I work until I call in that morning, so a twitter probably wouldn't give that much forewarning, but I do see your point and will try to set one up.
>>
>>31427156
So the Queen herself cannot gain adaptations?

We should look into weapons and armor then.
>>
>>31427156
Can you get more than 2 hours of advanced notice? If yes, then a twitter is worth using. If you can notify players more than 5 hours ahead of time, then it is very worth it.
>>
>>31427180
Good point.

>>31427179
Don't see why not. You would be unable to lay eggs while the mutations are done though, as you would need to cocoon yourself for the changes to take hold. When you emerged from the pod you automatically adapted to the local air, so the spores are no problem. Your first batch will suffer mild asthma though, and are more susceptible to local toxins. What kind of adaptations were you thinking of?
>>
>>31427234
Confused. Why would they suffer asthma? We've already adapted.

When do you plan on running again?
>>
>>31427234
let's see here...

>Porous Blades
Large, relatively light blades that aren't terribly resilient but can cut down mushrooms really well.

>Throwing Spines, Spine Launcher, etc.
>Acid
For combat, crafting, chemistry, and tunneling

>Re-allocate Limbs
We can have drones carry us if necassary, as unused limbs are inefficient.

>Specialised Limbs
for crafting, flying, recoil dampening, tunnel travel, etc.

>Telepathy upgrades
Make faster, more complicated orders to more drones

>Air Filters

>Mushroom Beds
On the body if they confer beneficial effects

Still thinking.
>>
>>31427326
You have, but the first batch of workers did not. They essentially have prefab genes that are able to function in a wide array of environments, but excel at nothing in particular. Essentially the first batch are very quick to mature so they can help set up the hive for better workers to live in. Think of them as super cheap starter units.

>>31427334
I like the way you think, although as queen you won't need to perform many tasks yourself other than create new drones. Your subjects, on the other hand, are a blank canvas of opportunity.

Queens still need to negotiate, hide, and defend themselves in times of emergency.

Also, how the hell are we doing culture? That's a question for another time, though.
>>
>>31427517
Culture would usually be discussions and negotiations between two or more queens of different hives, usually to trade new and innovative adaptations, negotiate for land and resources, or engaging in warfare when negotiations fail. Queens in more crowded areas may even pledge fealty to much larger hives, but you have not detected another of your kind thus far, so how you deal with other races, or even if you acknowledge them as people is entirely up to you.
>>
>>31427589
That's not quite what I meant. I mean if Queens keep certain decorations or mannerisms, if drones pick those up, if drones are capable of/allowed to develop their own little things to differentiate them, if Queens have heraldries or other symbols in the form of physical objects or pheremones, etc
>>
>>31427649
Your appearance would be largely the result of your own mother's genetic alterations prior to birth, so some similarities may crop up depending on the personality and intentions of the queen in question. The drones themselves are not fully self-aware. A thinker would be by far the most intelligent and it could probably be compared to a dog. Whatever you wish them to do immediately becomes the single designer and driving goal of their existence, and apart from the thinker, who hold excellent memory, most drones will forget an event the moment it no longer is effecting them. Especially if it doesn't pertain to their current goal. They have instincts, so if you tell them to build a tower they will know exactly how to do it, but if you put them in a room and tell them to relax and enjoy themselves they will likely freeze up in a nervous panic, completely devoid of purpose and scared to death that they might accidentally mess something up.

As for the queen, they love their drones as children but fully understand their disposable nature. Some might drift between the two extremes of protecting their drones dearly and throwing them at problems until the problem is solved I'll leave that up to you guys. You can decorate the hive however you wish. I would imagine a bit of a bloated ego would be par for the course, but other than that I'm waiting to see how you guys behave before considering the queen to have a specific character.

Dude, I wouldn't start thinking of Queenie as some sort of hero unit. I bet once the hive is fully developed, she'll be like most insect hive queens and be too swollen to move. Best to start thinking of this like a strategy game, the Queen acts by directing her underlings.
