Last time on Last Calibur:

You are Ekard, the monster hunter. While you dream of one day leaving your quiet village behind, you have never left the rustic and outdated place of your bith. Recently, your friend and neighborhood witch, Tayka, created a magical generator to display at the local Festival.
>"I have created my own Luciton generator! Behold, the Lightbox! With this, you'll never be dependant on the Empire again for your daily needs! It's a revolution! A revolution!"
But not all were happy about this. You and your friends were attacked by the Empire's representative.
>"I am Alexi DeLanger, Knight of the Winter King, loyal subject of the Emperor. We had been hearing reports of some heretical research being done in this village, and it seems the reports were true."
You managed to stand your ground and distract the knight from Rakki, the outlawed demigod who tends to your shrine, but ultimately you were pushed back. Things look bad, but now it seems there is yet a glimmer of hope...

Deep within the inner courtyard of the mountain shrine, the very same shrine you visited almost every day since you were born, you find yourself struggling with a new experience. The normally peaceful inner sanctum, the holy ground where the gods live and stand watch, is racked by terrible wind and mighty quakes. The tiled stone floor which held the sacred sword in place for ten thousand years crumbles away under your strength, revealing a prismatic display of strange crystal and even stranger metal carvings. The bedrock is sheered away, leaving a man-sized chunk on the end of the blade. As you hold the weapon, it sparks to life, surrounded by a crimson light which blows the remaining earth off the tip of the weapon. The magical radiance surrounds you, closing your wounds as curious symbols and script swirl around you.
>>
>>31475390

"T-the sword," The azure knight Alexi steps over the rubble as he enters the shrine, knocking aside what petitioners still remain in his path, "It's impossible. You are no King! I won't acknowledge it!"

You raise the sword, no, the Calibur above your head. You can feel the light around you, almost as if it were an extension of your own body. With a thought, you scatter the display, leaving only sparks of red to blow away in the wind, mingling with the pink blossoms of the shrine's garden.

You don't know about this King business, but you're ready for round two if he is. You think to yourself that this might be a good time to give him a chance to run if he wants, but also remember that he who strikes first tends to strike last.

Can't really address the Tayka issue while Alexi is still hanging around thinking he matters.
And I think successfully whipping his ass might be reported as a declaration of war upon the Empire, probably want to postpone that as long as possible.

Forget this blue bastard, the whole reason you got into this stupid fight was because of your friends. You take a step forward, and Alexi raises his weapon to intercept you. With a single movement, you're already past him, leaving behind a shimmering scarlet trail. Alexi never had a chance to stop you as you streak past him and toward the little shack where Rikki lives. In front of the ramshackle door, lying on the dirt, is Tayka. She's bruised almost from head to toe, but she seems in better shape than she was before. Rikki is kneeling next to her, the demigod's hands folded in prayer. A soft white light is surrounding the two of them, and it's a phenomenon you recognize. While Rikki is no true god, she can work a minor miracle to dull the pain. Sweat rolls down her forehead and her normally active and bouncy tail is perfectly still. She must be using her full concentration for this. As you approach, she flicks an ear towards you and turns her head. What calm and composure she had in the prior moments fades as soon as she sees you, and a waterfall of tears falls from her eyes.

"Ekard," she whimpers and sniffs, "Tayka's hurt real bad! Why is the Knight hurting both of you like this?"
>>
>>31476219
Well, it might have had something to do with how you tried to clock him in the middle of town, but you decide to omit that and tell her that Alexi didn't like Tayka's invention. Rikki wipes her eyes and stands up in a huff.

"That's not right! I'm going to give him a serious talking to!"

You try to get Rikki to stay where she is, telling her that Takya needs her help right now, but Rikki is having none of it. Tears still falling freely from her eyes, she shouts at the Knight, calling him a variety of names, including "jerk", "bully", and "poophead".

For his part, Alexi seems to have regained his senses and walked to the edge of the mountain staircase. He issues a peculiar whistle, and you hear dozens of boots stomping up the stairs. He is joined by Imperial footsoldiers, you'd recognize their stylish segmented armor anywhere, each of which is armed with their signature weapon: the Blast Pike. Each of their spears has a small nozzle fitted under the head, and if the rumors are true, they expel a magical blast on command...

You're feeling a little more nervous about this, and decide it's time to take the situation into your own hands and...

You've got to escape while you still have a chance. While it wounds your pride deeply, you're not sure if you can protect Tayka and Rikki against all those soldiers and a knight. You slip the sword into your belt and grab Rikki without warning. While she gives a yelp of protest, you don't have time to really consider her delicacy at the moment. You reach down and scoop up Tayka, throwing the witch over your shoulder before you look around to plan your escape.

To the stairs, you see the armed guards and the knight. No good. Behind you is the shrine. No exits, no good. Up the mountain, maybe? You don't have anything for the cold. Pass. Your eyes fall to the side of the path. Just over the railing is a steep drop, but it opens up into the back country. From there you could make it to the road and...
>>
>>31476869

"Grab them! They're affronts to our Emperor's law!"

No more time to think. You take a running start, feeling the magic flow through your body as you pick up speed. Everything slows down as you toss yourself over the wooden railing and onto the side of the mountain. You can see Alexi's face twist into shock, the festival participants cowering in fear, Rikki screaming at the top of her lungs, and most of all, you see that there is nothing but a sharp drop and sharper rocks beneath you as you fall.

With a grunt, you slam your feet into the side of the mountain and begin to skid down. Your boots and leggings are torn open by the cliffside, and a cloud of dust and broken rock gathers up behind you as you skim the side of the mountain. Though there is tremendous pain on your heels, your feet remain intact as you race your way to the ground. As the valley floor approaches you, you realize how poorly you chose, and brace yourself for impact. There is an electric shock as your legs hit the ground and your knees buckle under the strain. Your vision grows fuzzy and you double over, but there's no time to waste. You hit the ground running, even as your body screams for you to stop. You urge your body forward, not paying attention to where you're going or the protests of your passengers until your consciousness finally fades and you collapse.

--

"..up. Get up!"

You feel a sharp kick in your ribs and you roll over. You're by a campfire. The smell of cooked rabit reaches your nose and you look up to see the village witch. Tayka still looks a bit sore, but most of her bruising is gone. You look over to see Rikki sitting on a nearby stump, wagging her tail and smiling at nothing in particular. As she feels your gaze, she turns over and gives you an energetic wave before returning to her glassy eyed staring at the scenery.

"Finally with us, moron?"

"Figures," Tayka throws her hands up in the air and takes a seat besides Rikki. She pulls her hat down and sighs, "First thing on your mind is food. I guess you're just fine, jerk."

"Mmhm! I told you, Tayka. Ekard's super tough! You should have seen it, he didn't even cry when he jumped off the mountain! I was so scared I almost wet myself!"

You do remember your arm feeling a little warm and wet when you jumped...

"I said almost! Really, Ekard!"

Rikki puffs out her cheeks and offers you some skewered meat, which you gulp down without a second thought. That really hit the spot, you haven't had rabbit in forever.

"Look at you, eating like you didn't just assault the Emperor's Knight in public..." Tayka crosses her arms, "Hard to believe an empty headed fool like you is really my King."

King...? Oh yeah, that's right. You pulled the Calibur from the Shrine. Funny, you don't feel much more noble and enlightened. So where's your castle and subjects? Where are the dozens of women? Where's the ten-course meals and scores of bards to sing of your legend?

"Those come after you've done something worthwhile and gain followers! And for your information, I'm not going to be one of your groupies! I'm not sure if it's just because I'm so disgusted with you at the moment or you just have no charisma, but I can't feel the pressure of the Crown at all. Are you sure that's a Calibur Rikki?"

Rikki looks taken aback, but produces the sword you pulled free. It looks quite a bit cleaner from the last time you used it, has Rikki been polishing it?

"It's definitely real. The Sword of the King, the Right to Rule! Our shrine carried the last known Calibur. I'm not sure what its special power is, but it's definitely one of the sacred swords. I can feel the power from within it!"

"Well, that's that I guess," Tayka shrugs, "So, do you want to try giving us an order, or do you actually have a plan for dealing with our current situation? In case you forgot, we just committed a capital offense and ran away."

>Try giving them an order. Test out the Crown.

If you're a King, it's time to test out your unrivaled authority. While Kings are all fearsome combatants and masters of magic, the reason they stay in power is because of the Crown. When a King gives an order to one of his subjects, it becomes almost irresistible. No order, no command, is beyond the authority of a King to issue. In that case...

You eye Tayka and Rikki. A hundred different thoughts run through your mind, each more demanding and more degrading than the last. Eventually, though, you decide to honor the validity and purity of your friendship with these two young women. You take the Calibur back from Rikki and raise it above your head. The magical power leaps forth, and you can feel the surge of energy swelling behind your words.

Tayka and Rikki, listen to your King. Henceforth, you shall refer to your King as "master" or "my lord"!

You point at them dramatically only to feel the magic fizzle out, leaving you uselessly with a dull pop. Tayka crosses her arms and raises an eyebrow, while Rikki only offers you a salute.

"Yes, your lordship!"

Rikki, you had a good thought, but that's wrong...

"Looks like you don't have the power to order me around, Ekard. You know what that means?" Tayka pokes you in the chest, a scowl clear on her face. Oh, you can certainly guess what this is going to mean.

"How dare you try to get me to call you master! What kind of sick bastard are you!?"

A fiery explosion rocks the small clearing. It is twenty years before new plant life is able to seed the area.

--

"Even though you don't have the power over men, this Calibur is quite something. Interesting..."

A few hours later, you find yourselves on the road to a border town. News would take a long time to reach here, so Tayka felt it was safe to lay low there for a while. For the time being, she has taken possession of the Calibur and is inspecting it carefully.

"It shares many things in common with the Pillars of Light. For something of this size, it puts my old Lightbox to shame. If I could only study this more, maybe in conjunction with the Pillars themselves, I could make something truly remarkable! Ahh, but that's for later."

Tayka throws the Calibur back at you, and you sheath it without a second thought. Seems being a King isn't going to be as fun as it first sounded. Rikki walks beside you, having covered her unusual features with a heavy hood and long robes.

"Hey, hey, Ekard. If you'd like, I can take you to the Shrine in Alpath. That's the village we're going to. My clan told me that the gods there are some of the oldest! If you want to know more about the Kings and what you should do, maybe you could ask them?"

Yeah, talking to someone with some more perspective might be good.

"Hey, I know plenty about Kings myself! You should just ask me!"

Talking to someone who doesn't put you to sleep with their lectures might be better than listening to Tayka again. You're surprised you even managed to learn how to read and write from her with the way she just keeps droning on and on. Tayka sticks her tongue out at you and you continue on down the road.

Alpath, as you know it, borders the Empire with the unclaimed lands to the South. The Southern Lands are an odd bunch, if you remember right, dressing in flowing robes and herding sheep and llamas for their living. In the far, far south, Tayka has told you there is a Pillar in the middle of a giant desert, but you're not sure if you'll really believe her on that.

From a distance, you can already pick out the white stone construction that marks the Southern Lands, and Alpath is no different. Though it is still a far distance from the sands, the warm winds of the lowlands are very different from the cold valley and mountains you grew up in. As you enter the town, you can see the a stark clash of cultures, as Imperial tunics and leggings are crossed with loose robes and billowing cloaks. Water flows freely through pipes, pushed through by the power of the Empire's technology. Even with the sun bearing down on you, you can feel cool air rush out of every open door and window. All around you, vendors are selling goods and imported items from the sands.
>>
>>31479052

"Whoah! It's so different from home!"

Rikki pulls on your arm leading you from stall to stall as she takes in the sights. As impressive as this is for you, it must be something else for her, who was never allowed outside of the Shrine. Speaking of Shrines, weren't you supposed to go see the gods of this town?

"Right! If I remember Lord Fenri's teachings, the gods of Alpath live in the water underground. I wonder where that is?"

You take a look in your coinpurse. Sadly, you were unable to take your life's savings with you before you fled, but you did make enough money from that Stone Lion to last you a little while. So long as you don't go spending all your money in one place, that is. For now, you need to find a place to rest. That little stop you made in the woods was not a real night's rest, and you doubt that whatever the gods tell you will be so urgent that you can't get a good meal and bed in before you do it.

You look around, trying to find an inn that won't destroy your wallet, before finally settling on one with a picture of a red goat on the door. You're sure that a place such as this won't be so sophisticated that you'll break the bank. You enter the inn and find a modest bar and a scraggly looking keeper by the door. His beard is patchy and grey, and dark spots cover his face and arms. He looks up at you with an unfocused eye before opening his book.

"How many bells will you be staying?"

What, bells?

"The bell at Ondine's Shrine rings once an hour. I'm asking you how many hours you'll need to finish your business."

You might be here for a few days. The innkeeper looks at you, then to your companions, and snorts. He scribbles something down in his book and holds out a hand.

"Five-piece for the night, then. You can tell me if you're still up for more in the morning."
>>
>>31479853

You take out a coin, breaking it along the grooves until you've got five bits. After paying the innkeeper, you ask him how one gets to the Shrine around here. You've got to go pay your respects to the gods.

"Religious? In the Age of the Emperor? Hah!"

You're serious here. You need to go see the gods.

"...You must be from the sticks or something. If you want to see Ondine, you have to go at midnight. The Fountain at town square rises in the middle of the night to recaliboot or something. I don't know, it's Empire mechanics and stuff. Anyway, Ondine lives down there."

You nod and thank the innkeeper before turning to your companions. Tayka is the first to speak up, pushing her hat back so she can glare at you properly.

"If we have all day, I'd like to go see more of what the Empire has to offer. I won't pass up a chance to see such a complex waterway!"

"Oh, oh! Me too! I want to see what a toilet is! I've heard that they're the best part of being in the Empire!"

You decide you'd better go out on the town with them. It would be bad to let them go off on their own, wouldn't it?

"You're wastin your coin, stranger."

You give the innkeeper an odd look before going outside with your friends. It might help for you to figure out more about this place before you go see Ondine anyhow. You start your walk with the odd pair, glancing back and forth at the scenery, taking in the strange culture around you. Every few steps, either Tayka or Rikki stop to gawk at something new and interesting: whether that be a stranger with an interesting cloth wrap about his head or an odd pipe that sprinkles water onto a villager's plants, they always seem to find something that catches their interest. After a little while, Tayka falls back in step with you and begins to lecture you once more. Normally, you'd zone out, but the atmosphere of this place keeps you paying attention.

"I can't believe this place is so advanced. It's hard to believe that Alpath was a frontier town just a few years ago. Imagine the capital! What kind of amazing technologies have they rediscovered?"

Ah, right, all of this comes from the Celestial Kingdom, doesn't it? You're surprised that it all still works since it's that old. Tayka flicks you in the forehead and clicks her tongue.

"Weren't you paying attention in my classes? Even though the Celestial Kingdom invented all this technology, we can still copy it just fine. How do you think I made my Lightbox?"
>>
>>31480723
You sort of assumed that Tayka just thought it up wholecloth one day. It seems like something that a smart girl like her would come up with. Tayka gives you a wide grin, but flicks you again all the same.

"Flattering, but not true. The Lightbox was made based on my understanding of the Pillars of Light. These pipes, hoses, and fountains are all the same way: replicas based on our limited understanding of the ancient's technology. It's very interesting right? I can't even begin to think about how much more advanced their understanding of magic was!"

Yeah, sure, you bet that's totally fascinating to a nerd like her. Tayka grits her teeth and you take the opportunity to leave her behind. Speaking of left behind, you haven't seen Rikki in a little bit. Did she run off again? You start to scan the area for her, and after a few minutes of searching, you eventually find her. She's walking around with a very pleased expression on her face. You hesitate to ask, but you would like to know what's made her so happy.

"I found out what a toilet is! I've never felt so clean!"

Well, good for her, you suppose. Maybe now you can see something you're interested in?

You put a hand to your chin and think. Would it be best to have fun? Would it be best to be responsible? Perhaps some scouting is in order? Or maybe you should just forget about it all and take a nap?

"Lame."

What was that? You look up to see Tayka shaking her head at you.

"You can't even decide on what you want to do for an afternoon outing. How can you call yourself a man, let alone a King?"

"She's right, Ekard," Rikki pops in, pointing an accusatory finger, "Indecision is a big, biiiig minus point! You've gotta be more manly!"

Well, you're sorry for being overwhelmed for once in your life. You've never even left your village and you're already supposed to be taking charge of everything? To begin with, wasn't Tayka your leader?

"You're the man now, Ekard! Don't try to blame your shortcomings on a woman! That's cowardly!"

While Rikki tries to lecture you on the finer points of manliness, all you can see is Tayka flashing a devilish grin at you. Damn it! This is just like every other time you've had to make a decision. It's not fair that they get to take all day to decide on something but the moment you take five minutes to consider your options, you're a spineless coward.

To hell with this, you're going to go off and have fun on your own! You storm out of the town square, taking random roads as you try to calm down somewhat. Eventually, you decide that you're going to show them and decide to do something all on your own. At the end of this dirty back alley, you see two signs. The script is a little odd but you've already made up your mind to go into one of them!

You boldly swing open the door to the Blossoming Rose, and your nose is assaulted by the heavy smell of incense and tobacco smoke. Satin draps hang from the ceiling, and the interior of the building is of noticeably higher quality than the exterior. Maybe they were hiding the place? You don't know, but you walk up to the counter and demand service. Like a man. An elderly woman is behind the counter, and she takes a long drag out of a pipe before answering you.

"Oh, a fresh face. A traveler, are you? Well, I can help you get the service you need. Don't tell me now, don't tell me. I've been in this business long enough to know these things. You like nice, young flowers, don't you? Those that have only begun to bloom? Yes, yes, you prefer the ones that are still green, still full of vigor and life. Still," The matron takes a puff and blows the smoke over you, "Fresh and clean?"

Well, all of that sounds very good to you, but you don't know what she's talking about. You just nod and she leads you up the stairs and into a small room with a bed. You can only assume that this is some kind of incense shop or something, given all the references to flowers and the overwhelming smell. You look beside you at the night-stand and see a bottle of spirits and what looks like a sheepskin. Did someone leave their wineskin here?

In time, you're joined by a young woman...no, perhaps it would be more appropriate to call her a girl? You're not sure, but either way, you two begin to have a pleasant conversation and you consider it overall very relaxing. You learn her name is Saffron, what an odd name, and that she enjoys things like green tea, pleasant walks on the sands, and fine cuts of meat. You tell her that she just missed out on a good haul, as you killed a Stone Lion not a day before.

"Oh my. How very dashing," She giggles, "So, why don't we get started?"

Started? Started on what? Before the question can fully sink into your mind, you see Saffron reach back and release the straps on her dress.

Oh.

Oh no.

--

Minutes later, you find yourself in the Fountain square. Completely embarrassed and out of breath, you make two firm declarations to yourself. First of all, you will always strive to be decisive and bold in choosing the course of your life. Secondly, you vow to never again visit strange establishments in back alleys.

"So how long are you going to keep wandering around in those torn up clothes, Ekard?"

You look down at yourself. The burlap and wool working clothes you woke up in yesterday have been completely destroyed by your trip down the cliff. Your boots are especially worn down, with the soles ripped away and left somewhere in the forest. While you'd like a decent pair of shoes, you don't mind so much about a rip or tear in your dingy attire. You tell Tayka that you'll get new clothes later, when your budget is better and the situation demands it. The witch shakes her head and sighs deeply before jabbing you in the chest with her finger.

"Are you crazy *and* stupid? Not only does it look like I'm traveling with a beggar, but you stand out like a sore thumb in those clothes. You're going to have to get something new just to avoid attention, and a bath is in order as well! You reek!"

You lift up your arm and take a sniff. Well, you do stink, but you have to object to being attention grabbing. Hell, that huge hat and her ominous, black rags make her look like the villainess out of a fairy tale! Tayka goes red in the face and pulls you up by your shirt.

"This is the traditional garb of my coven! Unlike your sorry excuse for clothing, it's supposed to look this way! And I don't look like some two-bit villain."

Rikki puts her hands to her face in shock, "But I thought you liked looking scary?"

Tayka immediately switches gears, dropping you and tending to your canine friend, "Scary? If you thought I looked scary, why didn't you say so? Why don't you and I pick out some new clothes while Ekard gets some replacements for his own?" Tayka casts you a dirty look over her shoulder, "Gimme some money."
>>
>>31493941
You suppose there's no helping it. You'll have to buy replacement clothes for the both of you. If you get Tayka something nice, you'll have to make do with something on the cheap side. This might keep her in a good mood. On the other hand, you could do with something a little more expensive. Maybe people will take you more seriously...

>>
>>31494222
You think you'll keep most of this money for yourself. The days of being Tayka's flunky are coming to an end!

"Cheapskate. We'll meet up by the Fountain at midnight. We'll see you then, Ekard."

Tayka snatches up the few coins you give her and takes off with Rikki, who waves at you until she falls out of sight. With those two out of the way, you'll need to go outfit yourself. Your first thought is to get something cheap and simple, then spend your money on armor. Then, showing a rare display of foresight, you realize that marching around in armor is a good way to turn some heads, and you pass on that plan. After a minute preparing yourself mentally, you stride out into the bazarre to get yourself some new duds.

A few hours later, you've collected everything you think you'll need for an adventure, including a spare set. While you lamented spending money on it after felling the beast a day before, you procure sturdy boots, leggings, a warm cloak, and gloves; all made from the hide and fur of Stone Lions. They'll turn a blade of average size and strength and keep you warm in the winter and cool in the summer. You usually don't go for flashy colors, but you spent a good amount of coin on some well made linen tunics and shirts to round out the attire. All in all, it's a lot more respectable looking than you usually go for, but you at least made sure it was all functional. After having finished your shopping, you slip the Calibur into a new sheath on your belt and head back into the town square and wait by the Fountain. Judging by the last bell, it's only a few hours more until you can visit Ondine, so you take a seat.
>>
>>31494599
In a short while, Tayka and Rikki show up. They've exchanged their old attire for dark and light travelling robes and cloaks respectively. While their garments seem to have been made with care, their designs are simple geometric patterns that remind you of the tribal aesthetics of home. Tayka's clothes are a little more tightly cut, and she seems to have put away her hat for a travelling hood. Rikki continues to favor her red and white color scheme and is covering her ears with a white muffler, wrapped around her neck and the top of her head. It reminds you of the hooded scarves you've seen on the traveling priests.

"Ekard, Ekard! Does it look good? Did we pick well?"

>>31494687

Anybody think those Blast Pikes that the knight dudes had were flamethrowers? It seems unusual that people in this setting would be able to contain magic in a liquid or gas form.
>>
>>31495042
The Blast Pikes aren't quite flame throwers, but you're on the right track.
>>
>>31495042
While I wouldn't be surprised, since the magical artifacts in the setting either are, or are at least analogous to scientific technology, I would expect the blast to have been specified as fiery if it was, since that is pretty distinctive. Describing a flamethrower as 'blasting' is being a bit metaphorical anyways, since it fires a jet with non-damaging pressure.
>>
>>31494882
Well, it's a bit of an exaggeration, but you comment that they both look really good. You make up some weird excuse about how seeing them in different clothes has really reminded you about how cute they both are. While Rikki jumps for joy and seems elated, Tayka just raises an eyebrow. You think she's caught onto your little ruse, but she doesn't say anything and turns to look at the Fountain.

Ondine's Fountain is the center of Alpath and one of the most fanciful things you've laid eyes on to date. Made out of limestone and covered in the strange, copper pipes that carry the water all about the village, the watery mist it sprays out catches the moonlight, creating small flecks of colored light as it falls down. Atop the fountain is a large, bronze bell. There's not a spot of rust on it, so you guess it must be constantly polished by the Imperial soldiers that roam the town. You imagine this place must be a popular spot for young people on their romantic interludes, but you can't believe that it actually houses a god. Is this thing genuinely a Shrine?

You find the answer to your question sooner than you think, as the bell rings out twelve times in succession. Suddenly, the ground shakes, and the fountain begins to rise up. A pillar of stone spirals out of the ground beneath it, carrying the waterworks high into the air. The now disconnected spikes spray water everywhere until they are empty, creating a sudden downpour which drenches the immediate area. As the rotation slows, you see an opening at the base of the newfound tower. Guessing that this must be the way into the Shrine, you boldly step inside, motioning for your friends to follow you.
>>
>>31495407

The inside of the tower takes you to a spiral staircase which goes down for what feels like forever. The way is illuminated by countless glowing gems, which are cool to the touch and all of a slightly blue color. As you descend, the air gets colder and colder, and you feel a definite dampness to the air. As you reach the bottom of the pillar, it all adds up. This Fountain is connected to an underground spring. You step out from the Fountain and into a large cavern, where a deep pool of water lies in front of you.

In the middle of the subterranean lake, you see a large palace. Covered in sapphires and cut from what looks like jade, the palace glows softly with a bluish green light. As you step out, you can see the gods of this Shrine going about their daily lives through the windows of the structure. The children playing, the elders relaxing, and those still of firm mind and body going through their daily chores. The gods of this Shrine are different, being marked by odd fins and scales, as well as a vaguely green tint to their skin. You suppose that all Gods are different in their own way.

Before you can make it to the shore, a God steps out onto the water. He is ancient beyond believe, with his long green beard trailing behind him as he hobbles across the water to you. He stops, just short of land, and coughs. After a moment, he holds himself up, revealing his shimmering blue robe and the bright red Divine Seal on his forehead--marking his allegiance to the Empire.

"Greetings, travelers. I am the eldest of the Ondine...Why have you come to visit our Shrine today?"

Here we go
>>
So apparently gods can age in this setting. I hope this means that they can also bleed.
>>
>>31495706

You came here for answers, so you're damn well going to get them! You explain to Ondine everything that's happened, and ask him what he thinks you should do. He's a god, after all, now's the time for him to offer his advice.

"I see. So you, like so many others, have come to me seeking your destiny. I should have you know that I have been alive for a thousand years. I have seen many kings pass through here on their pilgrimages. Please, show me your Calibur, so that I might divine its true power and name."

You hand him the sword and wait. The old god looks over your weapon, turning it in his hand. After a few minutes, he begins to mumble to himself, chanting over and over again. Ripples spread across the water, and you can feel the air growing heavier, more dense. An otherworldly light surrounds him and then...it's gone. Ondine looks confused for a moment, then attempts his ritual again. When his ritual vanishes a second time, he looks to you and speaks up.

"...Please excuse me for a moment."

He rushes back inside his palace, and you can hear fevered shouting.

"I got nothing."

"What?!"

"Is it broken?"

"I thought these things couldn't break!"

"What do we do?"

"Hell if I know. Why are you asking me?"

"Haven't you done this before!?"
>>
>>31496084
After a few minutes, the Ondine returns to you, visibly frustrated. As soon as he approaches you, he smooths out his appearance and clears his throat.

"...This sword's destiny is still an unknown. Will you be a hero? Or a villain? Do riches excite you? Do women? Do you seek glory and fame? Or is it justice you are after? Crownless King with a Nameless Sword, I can only offer you this advice. Seek the Pillars, seek the Celestial Kingdom! Your sword yet sleeps, and you must call it into this world if you wish to protect yourself and your friends."

He bows and offers your sword to you.

"I shall now answer any questions you may have."

What a load of crap. He might be right, you don't seem to have the powers you should, but could anything be more predictable as this? While you think about whether or not you'll accept this 'quest', you think about some questions you may have.

>Why did the sword respond to you?

>>
Alright then, time to write
>>
>>31496378
Let me guess, our sword is technically no longer a Calibur, right?
>>
>>31496378
Just why did the sword respond to you? You decide to omit the part where you ripped it from the ground against its will first.

"It is proof that you have the blood of the Celestials, the ancients within you. When the Celestial Kingdom fell, its people spread out far and wide over the world, mingling their blood with their former subjects. The Caliburs were among their most prized weapons, and thus only those of such a noble lineage may master them. Those without the blood find them impossible to access their powers."

Rikki claps her hands, "Wow! I didn't know you were so special, Ekard. Is that why you were always the strongest in the whole village?"

"No, no," the Ondine interjects, putting his hand up, "The Celestial blood in of itself does not grant such power. Whatever strength your friend had before he pulled the sword was his alone. Unlike you, my young girl, the power of Kings is not so easily passed on."

"Huh...that's really weird. Then how do Kings keep their families on the throne?"

"Well, that's..."

Tayka interrupts them, stamping her foot, "Obviously they're cheating somehow! They didn't earn it like Ekard did, and are just getting their kids in because they're selfish. I bet the Sun King's lineage is the same way!"

"T-that's blasphemy!"

She spits, "See if I care!"

Well, with that out of the way, your next question should be--
>>
>>31496699
It's obviously excalipoor.
>>
>>31496793

"Hold it!"

You turn around to see a dozen Imperial soldiers guarding the exit to the Fountain. Their armor is gleaming in the artificial light, and their Blast Pikes are readied and waiting. Their leader, made obvious by the large red plume on his helmet, steps forward.

"I've been following you all day! You must be the traitors from Valleyheid! Surrender yourselves quietly, and I will see to it that you may be given life imprisonment over execution!"

You snatch your sword back from Ondine feel the magic invigorate you. You're not going quietly!

Well they were described as "Each of their spears has a small nozzle fitted under the head, and if the rumors are true, they expel a magical blast on command." so I assumed it was either a liquid or a gas that gets released.
>>
>>31497021

The Imperial Soldiers take formation, leveling their Blast Pikes at you, tucking the butt of their spears up against their shoulder. The strange device slung under their spear point shines with a violet light, and the Imperial Captain raises his hand.

"Fire at will!"

Magic arcs from their Pikes towards you, creating a concussive line of force. As the deadly purple haze approaches you, you raise your sword and slash downward, parting the wave of energy. The blast crashes into the water behind you, taking out huge chunks of the Ondine's palace.

Unconcerned with the fate of the Ondine's ritzy house, you turn back to check on your companions. Seems they took cover behind you as the wave approached, both of them relatively unscathed. Tayka lashes out with curses both literal and figurative as she launches a bolt of fire to scatter the Soldiers. Their formation broken, they begin to encircle you, their Blast Pikes already burning with energy.

"Watch your Pike's shot-count, men! Don't forget we're underground!"

Hm? Is being underground limiting them somehow? No matter, you raise your Nameless Calibur and leap into action, attempting to break their circle before they can fire. With a single stroke, you cut down several men, slashing through their weapons and armor as if they were empty air.

"Focus on the swordsman!"

You spin around to see all the remaining soldiers aiming their Pikes at you. You can see the blast of energy leaving the barrels of their spears--you only have a split second to act!

>>
>>31497324
I'm inclined for
>Strike
since it's a massive blast of energy. Statistically speaking it's also the safest choice if we are unsure.
>>
>>31497324
>Guard
This is too coordinated to be a crash.
>>
A strike it is, then.

>writing
>>
>>31497565
Uh oh?
>>
>Cross Counter!
>Your Advantage: 1
>Enemy Advantage: 1
As >>31497405 and >>31497540 deduced, the overall precise and organized nature of this attack contributes to its typing as a Strike. Furthermore, because the attacks came in volleys, they qualify as a speedy attack. Lastly, remember that "small arms fire" is generally counted as a Strike. This still holds true even when it's a speargun.

Screw waiting around, you're going to take these guys out head on. You charge through the barrage of magical energy, feeling the power smash into you as you continue to advance upon the soldiers. Your Calibur darts back and forth between them, felling them in an instant, leaving only the captain and his honor guard to oppose you. Unfortunately, these men seem much more skilled than their former companions, and immediately lock their spears together before smashing their barrels into your chest. In an instant, they all discharge their Blast Pikes, throwing you back against the cave wall. Your new shirt...already ruined.

You get up, finding within yourself a new resolve to beat the living daylights out of these Imperial bastards. Before you can act, however, you notice that they've turned their attention on your friends. Though Rikki has made a makeshift barrier with her divine power, the power of their attacks is already cracking the flimsy barrier of light. Each of them appears to have spun their spears around, now using the discharge from their Blast Pike to add power to the weight of their blows, turning a few feet of steel and wood into the equivalent of a battering ram.

You have to step in here, the only question is how!
>>
>>31497844
[Other objectives in Combat. Sometimes, it's not enough to simply beat someone down in combat. Sometimes, you must accomplish other objectives. While you still use the same three attack options, they may mean something else in a new context. The right counter might not always be the best move for accomplishing your goals. You may have to accept granting the opponent Advantage, or even accepting defeat, in order to win in the long run.

In this case, you must protect Rikki and Tayka somehow. Think about how you can help them.]

Ah fuck, our body is tougher then her barrier huh?
>>
>>31497858
Going to have to agree with >>31497883.

Guard.
>>
>>31497883
>>31497953
Or you know, we could stab them in the back while they're distracted. I don't think DXR would dick us on the first example of a mechanic. Go Strike and slash them before they remember we still exist. They probably think we're still dead
>>
>>31497975
Yah, but I don't think we have enough time to set up a Crash and they'll probably break through if we go with a Strike... I'm just hoping Witch girl can lob some fireballs at them while hiding behind us.
>>
>>31497858
On the one hand, they're attacking fairly rapidly. On the other, they're hitting like trucks with those fast attacks. They also are no longer focusing on us so we can probably get in an attack on them that they won't see coming.

If we guard the attacks that will probably give Rikki and Tayka a chance to counter attack safely, but if we strike them with their backs turned they may still be able to break through the barrier before we get them.

So I'm going to say
>Guard
against the attacks.
>>
>>31497858
Crash
>>
>>31497858
Guys. They've engaged our squishy, human support in CQC. We need to dislodge them. A guard might not be enough to do so. We should seriously consider charging to break them off. Yes, it'll result in a near draw, but I think I it's worth it to not have our companions get squished and for us to regain inertia, so

>Crash
>>
>>31497858
>Strike
Looks like they are crashing since battering rams aren't exactly accurate.
>>
>>31498069
>Regain inertia
You realize the spearman are Crashing right now, right?

Oh gosh a combat debate. Okay, I'm going to stop the count now and see what we have. If there's a tie, we'll do some kind of sudden death vote. I hope this is more interesting than annoying.

>Strike Successful
>Your Advantage: 2
>Enemy Advantage: 1

In this instance, because it was a new mechanic, both Strike and Guard would have gotten you Advantage and protected Tayka and Rikki. It won't be as forgiving in the future, and many of you had valid points on both sides. Again, I hope this mechanic is exciting rather than annoying.

In an instant, you're across the cave, your sword taking off the heads of the captain's honor guard. The blood flies around you, and Rikki looks like she's about to pass out from the sight. Luckily, Tayka has a stronger stomach and drags your mutual friend to safety as you turn to face the Imperial captain. His Pike depleted, he readies his spear in a fighting stance and charges at you. You easily deflect his attack, sending him flying across the cave with little effort.

It's not your style to hit someone while they're down, so you sheath your sword and give him the opportunity to escape. There's not much a single man can do to you alone anymore. Is this the power that lets Kings shape their destiny? You have to admit, it is rather appealing. You turn to your friends and begin to tell them it's over when you suddenly feel a pain in your side. There's a knife wedged just under your ribs! Had you still been a normal human, that would have been a mortal blow.

You turn around to face your opponent, but all you hear is a splash. Looks like he wants to play games. Well, you're done playing games. You grasp the hilt of the Calibur and feel the power within you well up. Like you said, it's not like you to kick a man while he's down, but this guy's just not giving you a choice...

Disappointing. There should be some low level fallout as a teaching point from the tutorial. "Future failures will carry a price worse than 'X' " type deal.

>Victory Achieved!
You draw the nameless sword from its sheath, letting the burning red magic spin around you, causing the earth to quake as your rage reaches a boiling point. You've had it up to here with these Imperials. Damn their stupid laws, damn their stupid soldiers, damn their stupid knights! You're not going to tolerate this kind of crap a second longer. Your eyes scan the pool, looking for the Imperial captain hiding somewhere within its depths. Unfortunately, you can't see him at all. But somehow, you have a feeling that not being able to see him isn't going to matter in a moment.

You bring the Calibur over your head, your anger and indignation as plain as day to anyone who looked at you. You are vaguely aware that Rikki and Tayka are saying something to you. Hop? Mop? Drop? Something like that. Oh well, it doesn't matter now. The magic flows from the sword, filling the entire cavern with its radiance, cracking the earth, and parting the water. The soldier, now bereft of his camoflague, is plain to see. With the target of your ire in sight, you bring the sword down in a single overhead chop.

The scrolls say that the Day of Two Dawns is a local event, situated within the Southern Reaches of the Empire. A magical explosion released by the Crownless King Ekard erupted from underneath the village of Alpath and continued many leagues into the sky. The event was visible by every village in the south, and many still celebrate as a holiday, claiming it is a time for mischief. Though it caused only minimal damage to the town, the Shrine was reduced to rubble and the waterways were out of comission for several months while Imperial Sages toiled away to rebuild the mechanisms. When questioned about the Crownless King, the Ondine had this to say:

"That brainless oaf destroyed our home and ran away without even apologizing! May his meals and beds be cold and unwelcoming for the rest of his days!"

well, when we're king, we'll give him reparations.

When Ekard gets rich he'll build them a house that's twice as good as their last one. That ought to appease them right?
>>
>>31499049
We're the king of badasses. Property and net worth are things to accidentally destroy during glorious battle, not worth accumulating (like liquor). Besides, he's a god and his followers already fixed his stuff, fuck 'im.

Ohhh, yes. Well, you don't have to be a bachelor for that to happen.

>>31499238
I based Ekard's level of destruction off the persona you guys have helped shaped over these two threads, which is now mostly set. He's belligerent and kind of a jerk like that.

Eh, that's considerably farther than I was suggesting we go. Just don't like the idea of letting friends get killed while we wander off somewhere else during a fight.
>>
>>31499867
I was making an overstatement.
