Your name is Volkov Marulovich, and you are a strapping young man of 18. You have been under the tutelage of your master for 4 years now. You are a bone mage in training and have specialized in the art of crafting and using artifacts. After putting down a minor rebellion with the help of your master, you were promoted to being an independent mage capable of taking on contracts by yourself.

You wake up feeling not as rested as you hoped you would; all night long you were plagued with unpleasant dreams. Not quite nightmares, but they were enough to keep you from sleeping as soundly as you could have been. You get dressed and geared up, grabbing a small snack of salted meat on your way out of the door.

You arrive at headquarters shortly, not even bothering to make conversation with the receptionist and passing by her with a brief wave on your way to the contract room.

You give a quick look through of posted jobs, and find that there hasn't been much change in the availability of what's available at your level.

>[Material Request] Saw-Teeth Leopard skulls: A request has come in to hunt down some Saw-Teeth Leopards for their skulls and jawbones. Payment is 20 gold and the remainder of the leopard skeletons. [Solo-mage job]

>[Mercenary Request] A feud has erupted between two wealthy families, and one of them has requested the aid of Association mages. Payment is 40 gold with room for bonuses based on performance. [Multi-mage job]

Eh, the authorities are on it. What can we do that they can't?

He's also a full-fledged bone mage of many years, and we won't be able to grab his pistol this time.
>>
>>31480350
Not a whole lot with just one and no sharp bits. Sharp edges and more pulse changes things, though.

>>31480397
He's also been under heavy lock and key most of the time. But you are correct in that there isn't much more that you could do that the Association or town guard could do.

>>
>>31480435
Would attaching drake spines or saw leopard teeth add more penetrative power to our Melee weapons or gauntlets?
>>
>>31480460
That is a possibility. You could also have double impacts. Or double pulse. Or triple impacts if you pulled the one out of the other gauntlet.

>>31480514
It would in the physical sense since there would be sharp bits hanging off your gear, but magically no. Drake spines are just an all-around good quality crafting component that handles magic well and isn't too hard to get with the advent of farming.

The teeth need to be used in the actual crafting of modules to have a real effect.

Also, mercenary request has won, so writing.
>>
>>31480514

Saw Leopard Teeth add additional potency when crafted into Fray Modules.

We could probably purchase some Bone Enriched Steel or something and graft some spikes onto our punchy-gauntlet though, and such a small amount of material wouldn't cost much nor would the modification take long to do. Of course, we would accordingly get relatively little meta-mechanical benefit out of such a modification...but hey it'd look and feel badass.
>>
>>31480586
You said that impact combines nicely with barrier. Double impact with a barrier thrown in?
>>
>>31480628
Last thread I offered the chance for people to get a new bone enriched steel weapon of their choosing and I think no one wanted it. Perhaps in the future.

>>31480687
A possibility as well. Remember, just because you have modules in place doesn't mean you have to use all of them or none of them at once.
>>
>>31480724

Eh, it was just a bit expensive. Last thread was also strangely slow/sleepy.
>>
>>31480724
>Last thread I offered the chance for people to get a new bone enriched steel weapon of their choosing

Those bastards

I vote either
>double impact with a barrier
>Impact, shatter, freeze
Prefer the first one since it's direct damage. And has defensive ability.

You decide to grab the Mercenary Request, feeling like you need a change of pace from all the solo work that you've been doing as of late. You bring the contract up to the clerk and he goes through the motions of recording your acceptance of the job.

“You've been pretty busy, haven't you?” The clerk says, trying to make small talk as he sets things up for you.

“I'm trying to build up a reputation, you know how it is,” you reply.

“I guess so, I'm not a mage myself,” he replies.

“Really? I thought everyone that worked here was,” you reply, shocked.

“You would be surprised how many people work here that aren't mages. Alright, be back here in a couple hours so you can meet the rest of your coworkers for this job.”

Seconding that config.

Could we test it's efficacy on a dummy in the house, and the efficacy of the barrier/2impact glove and the efficacy of our barrier/impact glove just so we the players get the feel for the effects of all of them?
>>
You are still unsure as to what would be an optimal balance of modules for your gauntlet; on the one hand, the number of times that you have actually needed them has been very few. On the other, in the event that you REALLY need it you don't want to leave yourself high and dry. With this in mind, you tell the clerk that you should be back soon and head back home to test out the configurations in detail a bit more.

With the help of your master, who was actually around for once, you manage to get the training construct back in working order, with orders to do simple strikes of varying strength. The results of your testing show you that the single Impact+Barrier combination is adept at knocking most attacks back with enough force to disrupt the guard of the attacker, while the double Impact with single Barrier combination will outright knock attackers off their feet.

What will the final configurations be for this mission?

>>
>>31481763

I think that we can make up for any shortage of impact modules (except where synergy is an issue) by just choosing to cast multiple instances of the Impact Spell, using our gauntlets.

Presuming our gauntlets are capable of casting that spell. What spells from our list are our gauntlets capable of casting, Saucy?
>>
We have a total of six weapons including the gauntlets. I kind of wish we had some non-combat modules to choose from. Like healing or something.

Maybe we could incorporate a spell focus into one of the gauntlets instead of a module.
>>
>>31481824

Spell foci are just like necklaces, so we've got them no matter what.

And currently we have 1 Medium Focus (Either 3 Small Sustained Spells, or 1 Medium Sustained Spell [we don't know any medium spells]) and 1 Small Focus (1 Small Sustained Spell)

>>31481792
The gauntlets can be used for those spells as they're basic enough for them. Bigger, more complex spells require a proper focus.

>>31481824
The gauntlets technically are foci themselves, although they have a more limited range of capabilities.

Counting, writing.
>>
>>31481862

Nah, they can cast spells man.

Spell Foci are for sustained spells. You use your Spear (versatile, good combat potential) Staff (most versatile, eh/neh combat) or other implements (including gauntlets, which have a rather limited range of spells) to create resonance between your own mana and their internal mana to cast offensive spells out of them.

You finish reconfiguring your gauntlets once more, this time deciding to not make anymore changes for now. Your current configuration is unchanged for your left gauntlet, your right now equipped with an Impact/Freeze/Shatter set-up. You say goodbye to your master for now and head back to headquarters.

In addition to the normal foot traffic that the main lobby experiences, you spot a group of people hanging around near the front desk. One of the people, a young woman, calls out to you as you attempt to head towards the contract room. You head over to the group to see what they want.

“You are the one they call Volkov, yes? We were told you were the final member for this job,” the woman says through a Rothish accent. She wears a standard Association uniform with minor additions of gear here and there of her choosing. On her back you can see a rather large double barreled long-arm. She continues speaking.

“I am Amelie, this is Robert,” she says gesturing to a man much larger than you, both in height and musculature and equipped with a lance. Robert gives you a quick nod. You return the nod and hear a cough to your side.

“I am your other coworker, Frederick,” comes a voice from the side. You turn to see a rather extravagantly dressed man with an extended hand. You return his handshake.

“I'm Volkov, although you already know that, don't you? Know anything about this mission that wasn't written in the posting?” you ask to none of them in particular.

“I heard the families involved in this feud end up doing this sort of thing every century or so. Apparently one of the daughters of one of the families stabbed one of the members of the other family,” Frederick speaks up.

“Do they always hire soldiers when they do?”

“Seems so, although this is the first time the feud has heated up with mages for hire,” Robert interjects, “if I were a betting man I'd say that they intend to finish things this time, winner take all.”

“Well, if we were hired by one side that means the other won't have any mages themselves since the Association won't have it make its mages fight against each other,” you say.

Amelie shakes her head.

“Apparently the other side brought the mages in first, non-Association, too.”

“Military mages,” you say in a hushed tone.

“No, most likely just ex-Association mages,” Amelie says. You give her a puzzled look.

“Sometimes mages get kicked out of the Association for misconduct, which while technically legal is frowned upon by the higher ups. Other times they just don't like how things are run and leave in a huff,” Robert says, shrugging.

The four of you continue to talk until a man approaches your group with a parchment in hand.

“Alright, you four are the ones that took the Gareme contract, correct? This way, please,” he says motioning you to follow him. As you walk deeper into the building he continues to talk.

“I don't know why, but this client was willing to pay extra to have you four teleported in. Must be extremely urgent. Anyway, you'll be briefed upon arrival to your destination, good luck.”

>>
>>31483259
You arrive in a large room full of people rushing to and fro, a series of smaller arches lined up against a wall with parcels and letters coming in and out of them. In the center of the room is a large pillar surrounded by smaller arches that attach to the pillar at the crest of the arches. Your group is directed to stand under the arches connected to the pillar. The man begins a countdown, and a team of mages begin to channel a spell with the pillar as a focus. When the countdown ends you feel the strangest sense of vertigo as the world shifts around you.

When you come to your senses, you and your group are located in a field outside what looks to be a major city.

“Is everyone alright?” Amelie calls out, which is answered with various grunts and groans as everyone struggles to their feet.

“If we were being teleported in, wouldn't the client have us sent to his property?” Frederick asks.

“Probably,” Robert grunts.

As you look towards the city, you see a pair of figures riding out towards the field that you landed in. The others take notice of your gaze and see the pair approaching.

“So, how do we want to do this?” Robert asks, cracking his joints.

“Seriously, what's the plan? Guys?” Robert asks. He looks around only to find none of you are in sight. He turns back around to face the riders. From your hiding place behind a low stone wall you can faintly hear him curse to himself.

You carefully unsling your rifle and ready it in the event that this is a worst-case scenario, hoping your team members are doing the same. From your hiding place you can hear the conversation between Robert and the riders unfold.

“Halt, Crotan city police, state your business,” one of the riders says.

“I haven't even done anything,” Robert says.

“You are guilty of, err..”

“...Loitering?” Robert finishes for him.

“Yes, that's it, loitering! You'll have to come with us,” the first rider says.

“Really? I'm not even in the city, though. You two are awful at this,” Robert chastises them. “You aren't even wearing uniforms!”

“I told you this was a stupid plan, get him!”

You leap up from your hiding place, rifle ready, along with your other in-hiding allies that also have their weapons ready.

“Alright, we have questions for you two, and it will be in your best interest to answer them, yes? Now then, how did you know we were coming and why we did not arrive at the correct location?” Amelie asks.

One of the men spits.

“We ain't sayin' nothin',” he says.

“Oh good, I was hoping things would go this way, is much more fun,” Amelie says popping open the breech on her break-action shotgun. She extracts what appears to be shells of lead-shot suspended in bone marrow and then loads a small pebble before firing it at the ground between the man's legs. All of you, the bound men included, scream when she does so except for her.

“You can't just go around threatening men's important bits like that,” Robert yells, “it's not right!”

“We'll talk, just keep her away,” the man she threatened screams, nearly hysterically.

“You can't though, if you do Robin will kill us,” the other man yells.

“If you want your future children killed early, go ahead. As for me, I want to remain a whole man!”

After Amelie's persuasions, the men are quickly compliant with your lines of questioning. Apparently, they were just hired by an individual named Robin not an hour ago to come pick you and your group and stop you from getting to your client, an Augustus Gareme. Aside from this, they have no further information of use to you. You decide to bring them with you to the client.

Although the city is very large, with the knowledge of who your client is and his general level of wealth it doesn't take too long for your group to arrive to his estate. What was once a normally immaculately maintained stone wall with wrought iron fencing has been scorched in places with massive gouges missing from others. As you approach the gate you are accosted by a team of armed guards on the other side of the gate. After a brief exchange with them, they open the gates and allow your group entrance onto the grounds. On your way up to the house, you can see small craters doting the lawn and walkway, passing by the occasional bloodstain that has yet to be washed away by rain.

What kind of feud gets this out of control?

As always, time for nightly Q&A.

What were your thoughts regarding tonight's thread?
>>
>>31484365
apparently one of us is a psychopath
>>
>>31484365
Are all bone mage users psychopaths.

I liked it, I wish there was a way to streamline crafting and shopping and such but I don't see a way to do that while keeping the level of detail you have right now (and I quite enjoy the level of detail we have right now).

Tonight's thread was good
A couple? Of Anons me included got a little crazy at the end but goo nonetheless.
So when's the next thread?
Also is it possible to make hybrid weapons? Like a gauntlet with a firearm installed in the knuckles? Or a staff that doubles as a rifle?
Final question how strong can the skeleton constructs we create be? I got this idea of us being followed by dwarf sized skeletons called the "Three Musketeers"

I'm thinking Wednesday for the next thread.

Yes, you can have crazy-ass hybrid weapons, you are mostly limited as to what you can have by gold and knowledge.

Skeletal constructs can be very powerful, depending on your various skill sets.

I think he's getting skeletal constructs and reanimated skeletons of creatures from Speaker confused.

If we wanted to get into making constructs, what skills would we pursue?
>>
>>31484499
Well, constructs can fall under either Shaper or Speaker, although with sufficient skills in both you could make a construct that utilizes both trees. For a Speaker construct you need Animate at the very minimum, although Gild and Empower increase the usefulness of those constructs even more.

For Shaper constructs, you can't really get autonomous constructs, however you can make very powerful shells, which can be designed to be operated by a person, either by being physically in it or controlling it via an artifact, or by casting Animate on it. Shaper constructs start to become possible once you get to around Shaper 3, and only get more powerful the higher up you go.

So, to get the most powerful construct that you can get you'll need to be fairly deep in both trees, although you can get by with just a small bit from either tree

Hmm, you werent kidding when you were talking about bone power armor.

I look forward to seeing the gear on some upper level mages when we get there.
