“Soooo, nineteen…”

You lip curls up in annoyance (disgust?), “Are you going to make this thing?

Wendy smiles in self-satisfaction, “No thing. Just sayin’. You just look older on account of the whole eyes that look dead on the inside and everything...although there’s a lot of other stuff but whatever.”

Her arm is still wrapped around you. She squeezes you a little tighter.

“But you’ve, you know…”

She makes a circle with her right hand and sticks her index finger from her left through it a bunch of times

“Right? I mean, like...do you need the talk or something?”

You are Michelle St. Claire, and today is your second day on the job.

Well, sort of. After a busy day yesterday executing a handful of teenagers in a way that would make the islamists blush (never thought THAT would happen…), today you clocked into the office only to be given the day off.

Cool.

Wendy took (kidnapped?) you to buy a handbag after you told her you didn’t have one. Quickly picking one even as the girl behind the counter made fun of you to Wendy (although she stepped in...eventually), she eventually took you where to you really wanted to go in the first place: the mall.

Now you’ve bought a bunch of stuff. Keeping the modern sort of theme with everything you bought, with a lot of black wood (not ebony, but…) and aluminum and steel.

Except for your dining table. That’s made out of a walnut sort of brown wood that’s apparently handmade in Maine from driftwood. Neat. Sort of reminds you of the one your parents had.

Wendy thought it was stupid but Wendy can go fuck herself, you have excellent taste.

Your bed is a low, black framed with what you thought was a supremely comfortable foam mattress, with high thread count sheets to match (not dark colored ones, though...you’ve had enough of seeing stains on navy and black sheets).

You picked up a fairly simple TV (it doesn't even project a hologram!) and a black wooden cabinet for all the bits and bobs to go, but Wendy said you should get a real stereo.

There’s a whole bunch of other shit too, but the only one you care about are a pair of lounge chairs for the back deck. They’re even hydrophobic, so that’s cool.

Oh. And you bought a couch.

OH. THAT.

You pull out from under her arm. “Ew. Gross. Wendy, please. Timing..”

Wendy laughs and laughs.

“Disgusting old hag…”

Not so funny now is it Wendy? She frowns at you. ...but you’re not sure it’s all because of you.

She doesn’t try to put an arm around you again, but she gets real close to you.

The two of you walk in silence for a few seconds as you push your cart towards all the bath and shower and stuff section of the store.

“Look, can I talk to you about something? Real talk, not just calling you names.”

She looks serious. Looks pretty similar to her “time to kill people now,” face, but maybe a bit less...empty? The only place people say grim is on the trids or crappy books.

Uhhhh….this got weird (is getting weird?) pretty fast.

“Whaaaat’s up Wendy?”

You didn’t mean to stretch it out, but...yeah, it happened. Maybe she won’t notice. You can just blame it on the weirdness anyways.

“About yesterday.”

Oh. Yep. Weird.

She preempts you, “I’m sorry I unloaded on you after that...thing. You know. It wasn’t really fair for you and I’d been with Skyler for days and having someone who answered back with more than a few words was, like, unbelievable and then you came in here super badass warrior amazon lady and then he got up behind me and I’m not exactly designed for wrestling, right? Oh yeah.

“-as going to piss myself because I hadn’t been able to hit a bathroom in like twelve hours and the last sensation that I was ever going to feel was shame because I couldn’t hold it in.”

Wendy scrapes a painted nail (french tipped...although they’re getting pretty worn) at the corners of her eyes.

“So….yeah. Sorry for doing it again.”

She looks at you somewhere between expectantly and relieved

You mumble under your breath some incoherent words at Wendy as you wrap her in a tight hug, selfishly (and deliberately) inexpressive so as to repress your own tears.

That doesn’t stop Wendy, though. She buries her face into your collarbone (by fate or design she’s on the one that attaches to a real arm…) and you can feel the warmth from her tears dribble down your neck and soak into the collar of your shirt.

It grows cold as it evaporates.

You wonder what the other women are thinking as they watch you hold Wendy as she cries and you try and fail to speak.

You keep your hands high on her back. Maybe you care a bit what those women think.

Wendy stays there for what feels like a long, long time.

A memory is dragged up from a pit you forgot about. Trid from a deployment? It feels...older, than that.

Maybe it came from your parents. You don’t remember when or where, but you do remember the phrase.

You rub her back a few times and tell her, “We’re all gonna make it.”

“We’re all gonna make it.”

Eventually, slowly, Wendy pulls herself off you and looks away as she wipes at her eyes. She spends a few seconds with her shoulder towards you before making eye contact with you again.

She coughs and rearranges her hair.

Her eyes are red and inflamed.

“I hate this job.”
Yeah...you’re fine with the way the two of you promptly and politely ignore and move on from breakdowns.

That’s a nice policy.

“So, you know...maybe we should stop and eat or something? Low blood sugar or whatever…”

Wendy wipes her nose, “It’s fine. Let’s just get everything I need to make you tolerable to work with then I’ll try to figure out how to stretch three grand so you look less homeless.”

“Wow. Thanks.”

Well...at least Wendy’s back. Probably.

She walks quickly, pulling you and your shopping cart behind her. Maybe this is therapeutic for her.

“So, like, obviously you look like ratman got a bad haircut from a blind guy with janky clippers, so I need to actually ask how much do you know about, you know...being clean and not being grody and just generally existing in polite society?”

“There’s, ...uh… some stuff you put in your hair and…

“I don’t know, do do we not just use a bar of soap and stick your head under the water? That’s what I’ve been doing.”

Wendy makes a pinched, pained looking face. “I just don’t understand how you have any hair left at all. I’m going to make all your decisions for you since you’re clearly a retard who needs the state to feed you through a tube and change your diaper.”

She’s kind of a bitch sometimes. She walks through some shoulder high display cases with tons of...stuff, on it.

“I can’t believe I have to do this. This is shampoo. It cleans the grossness out of your hair and makes it smell good. It’s pretty important. You will use it every other day until you run out, so help me whatever god will have me. Probably want to wash twice. I usually have to go twice through but if it’s been a really gross couple of days sometimes it’s three.

This is conditioner. This is what makes hair insanely soft and sexy and why men (and lezzes, I guess) get hard. Let it chill for at least ten minutes in your hair. Shave your legs or whatever, I don’t care. Use it after you shampoo.

All the rest of the stuff doesn’t matter because you don’t have any hair. Once it grows back I’ll get angry some more.

I prefer floral and woods and nature smelling shit, so that means you prefer floral and woods and nature smelling shit too. It seems to do a better job warding off the smell of death than fruits or whatever. I think it smells better in the cold air up here anyways.”

She hands you a pair of 500 mil bottles of a matching set of shampoo and conditioner. You unscrew the top of one of the bottles and inhale.

Smells like trees with a little bit of vanilla and mint. Smells better than the soap you stole from the hotel room, at any rate.

>>
>>31485346

“I’m feeling pretty hungry now.”

“Weren’t you just sayi-’

She cuts you off. “I say a lot of things. I want to sit the hell down.”

She looks uncomfortable for the first time for a few seconds as she shifts her weight a few times between each foot.

“No matter how many pairs or how long you wear them they never feel as comfortable as boots.”

She smiles brightly. Sadly. at you. This is the first time you’ve seen her in pain, not just fear or terror.

She wants it so bad.

“Allright…”

You leave your shopping cart behind one of the registers and in the hands of some faceless, perfectly formed attendant and tell her (it, at this point…) that you’ll be back after lunch for it.

Wendy drags you to where the small restaurants and stalls and vendors are, and orders two of the same thing from a restaurant you don’t understand.

Wendy called it “fusion food,” but you don’t know what that is. She says you’ll like it but Wendy says a lot of things.’

The two of you sit down at a small, perforated painted metal table with the sun hanging overhead, only a few clouds in the sky somewhere deep from Michigan or Eerie.

Wendy takes a sip off her drink through her perfectly, daintily held straw and says, “I hate days off,” as she looks at the world around you.

Never really had days off, so its new for us, ask her about the legalities surrounding self defense and personal weapons, we feel slightly naked without something to reach for when shit hits the fan

Also, was Karan taking care of getting us a vehicle or were we going to do that after shopping to not be a hobo?
>>
>>31485440
Karan offered to help, but (I think, I'd need to double check if it's contested) she was either not given any direction at all, or incredibly vague instructions.

From my records:
>"You push past it. “And I would appreciate some help finding a vehicle. Maybe a motorcycle? And maybe something with some utility. Lots of maybes. Also, yes, I will be getting a TV.”

So...some, but not a lot. You could call her if you want to give her additional instruction.
>>

thread #7 we discuss it but don't really act on it
>You should probably start with a car. Maybe a motorcycle? You suppose you have the income to maintain both...not to mention plenty of space to store them...although you’re not exactly going to ferry much luggage on a bike, and you kind of need to furnish everything.

>So...some, but not a lot. You could call her if you want to give her additional instruction.
we could, we should ask her to find us a list of suitable vehicles for sale that match what we want, so something with plenty of utility, a cheap/mid-range sedan with plenty of boot space or a cheap/mid-range cab chassis ute/truck and for a bike, something not really too racy, but powerful enough, modern-ish styling and cheap/mid-range for price

or you could always just post cyberpunk images that are appropriate for the setting and Michelle's chosen line of work
>>
>>31485920
>>31485922
That seems so...spammy and impersonal, though. I don't want to just flood everyone with images because then the visual representation becomes oversaturated and washed out.

The images I post of things aren't all that "special," but they're important/relevant within Michelle's context/self-narrative.

Less is more, you know?

'Less' is not always 'none', though.
There are exactly three images in this thread; the OP, unrelated Worst Idol, and a shitty 'reaction' image.

well it does not really help if your lurking and not posting when theres only one or two other players anon, even just seconding a vote or your thoughts helps things out

as long as its somewhat appropriate to the quests premise, setting, environment, or the characters and their lives, it helps add to things if you post a picture with an update

“I wouldn’t know. It’s not like we got days off. Just days where we were told to hurry up and wait. Sometimes I watched people die, sometimes I watched people die from behind the leaf sights. One day I got shot in the face and now here we are.

Aaanyways...don’t you feel naked or vulnerable or whatever without a gun? I mean, you know…”

You shrug loosely. Hopefully she “knows.”

Wendy spins her fork in...noodles? and shrugs back at you.

“I dunno. Doesn’t really bother me, I guess. I feel more normal in a dress and nice shoes than I do in a vest holding a gun and that’s basically all I want. I mean not obviously EVERYTHING I want but any day I don’t have a smoking gun in my hand is an ok day you know? Besides...can you imagine the shit that would happen if you actually had to draw or whatever or, Jesus Christ, kill someone?

No thanks. I get enough of that at work, I don’t need to bring it off with me. I don’t know the law, though. The only gun I own anyways is this ancient Nagant I bought from some hick somewhere south of here and the Gulf of Mexico.

If you’re serious you can talk to the company, I guess, but I don’t think they’d be thrilled. Best-case scenario someone on their payroll is going to go to trial, worst case someone they spend a lot of money on is dead, and both cases cost them money, and the company hates it when things cost them money.”

She shrugs. “Sorry. That was a lot. Do what you want and talk to whoever you want about it, but the company will leave you out to dry if it costs less.

You know...the whole “don’t trust the company,” thing. I mean, after all...they pay us to kill kids. Probably won’t have our backs if we get made. Just something to think about before you start popping up on the grid or...you know, flashbacking to wherever the shit they sent you-”

"Middle east I was in the middle east.”

Jesus, it’s amazing you’re not even crazier - and now a family of four is dead because you snapped.”

You say, trying to parse and internalize everything that just came out of her mouth (Wendy eats and waits as you move your mouth trying to form words), “That was a lot of shit, Wendy.”

She makes an mmhmm sound through her noodles.

“I thought this was supposed to be an easy job.”

She snorts, sending hot water all over her mouth and nose. Ow ow ow ow. She wipes at it quickly with a paper napkin.

“Buy a time machine and go beat the hell out of your past-self for making awful choices, because that’s about the only option you have left.”

“This job fucking sucks.”

Wendy laughs and looks proud. “And it only took you two days to figure it out. Maybe you’ll live. Anyways, how much more do you want to do today? I kind of (totally did) depressed the shit out of myself and blah blah pain is just weakness leaving the body and whatever but Jesus my feet are starting to hurt I might as well be walking on asphalt in these things so I was thinking I’d buy myself something nice and pretty an-

Oh! Yeah I totally forgot because it’s not for another few months but the company has this yearly “formal event,” which is basically just a black tie party where everyone gets shitfaced off the open bar and tries to forget about the past year of sin and murder...or, well, that’s what I’ve heard anyways I haven’t been long enough to go to one so if we live (which I’m sure we totally will!)”

She sounds strained, as if she can’t quite believe the lie she’s telling, “Then we’ll get (have) to go. >>31486331
I will wrangle up an image that's at least representative of the unit Michelle has and get that posted when available.

In a purely text format, it's matte black alloy and semi-gloss carbon fiber. The overall structure is more or less 1:1 with the human arm, except that her arm doesn't have any "skin," or "muscle." It's just a man-made humerus, with an ulna/radius copy. The wrist is covered in carbon fiber. Michelle's synthetic hand and fingers are nearly identical in size and shape to her real hand.

It's stronger (but not by a whole lot...it's still anchored in her very-flesh-and-blood shoulder and back), and her wrist can rotate a full 360 degrees (which is a neat party trick/good wiping your ass).
>>
>>31486389

You consider the offer for a while. Wendy makes some pleading-looking eyes at you.

“Allright, ok...you should have to get battalion level approval to deploy that.”

Wendy’s mouth moves as she laughs but her eyes don’t really budge. “Ha. Service humor. Funny.

We’ll go after we’re done eating. My place is closer to my house.”

The two of you finish eating your...lunch. It tasted like pasta with some sort of soy/peanut sauce, but those were definitely wheat flour noodle like the Italians do. It wasn’t...bad. Better than MREs, at least, and you suppose that’s good enough.

You quickly pay and organize delivery for all your purchases, and take what you have with you back to Wendy’s car and load it all into her trunk.

She plays a CD of her favorite company idol. The ride feels longer than it probably was.

She says you get used to it. You don’t believe.

And...the two of you are in a tiny strip mall somewhere in the suburbs. The parking is kind of tight, but you’re small enough so it’s not really much of a squeeze, just a bit of contortion so you don’t ding Wendy’s paint.

Wendy’s “salon,” is more like Wendy’s “discount shack.” It smells like lacquer and while you don’t hear any English, you do hear lots of Spanish.

You look at Wendy, confused.

“What?”

“Just...you know.”

“Are you saying a white girl can’t be with her people with a bunch of strong independent latina women who don’t need no ma-”

Wendy laughs, but this time her eyes show it too. “Sorry, I couldn’t get through it. They spend most of their time complaining about husbands or boyfriends or children. I know it sounds horrible and awful and selfish but hearing them tell me about it makes me feel a little less, you know, lonely and broken and whatever.

I also totally know Spanish even if I sound super white. Let’s go.”

She walks inside and greets everyone. Of the eight chairs in the small salon three of them actually have women in them. The others are standing in a circle in their insanely(!!!) tall high heels and tight pants and loose blouses and big hair.

Wendy just walks over and sits down in a chair (you assume that’s her favorite’s chair) and she motions for you to sit next to her as she kicks off her flats.

You do so.

She chatters at the women and two of them peel off and start getting to work.

“Hey, dumdum. Shoes.”

Oh...yeah. You’re pretty you don’t want anyone seeing your feet, yourself included.

“Not optional.”

“But-”

Lets get it over with so we don't have to put up with hobo feet anymore

How did Wendy get into our chosen line of work, she doesn't seem like a former soldier

Man, I did not realize it's already so late. Christ.

I'm going to end the session in one or two more posts.

Also tonight's a blood moon, so everyone should check that out if you can!

“Really? Wendy, please…”

“Take your shoes off, Michelle.”

When she talks like a boss lady she’s kind of fucking scary. You pull your black socks and your beaten shoes off.

Wendy gags a little as she looks at them, a small high pitched squeak. To her credit, the woman who’s going to be doing your nails seems unphased.

You try to relax in your seat. It’d help if it wasn’t quite so...sticky.

“You just never stop being fucked up, don’t you?”

“Oh fuck off...you wanted this.”

Wendy looks smug and disgusted.

Are her eyes watering?

It’s not THAT bad..right?

“Hey, Wendy, can I ask you something?”

She waves you forward.

“How did, you know, you end up working there?”

She makes a long mmm sound. “Can we talk about this at your place?”

You shrug. “I guess.”

The both of you lean back into your chairs and relax.

Thanks for the thread OP, any idea when next session will be?

Whoops. Totally forgot my manners. How rude of me.

Thanks for playing everyone! Extra thanks to everyone who sticks around until the ass end of the morning with me.

Sorry if it seemed kind of bumpy in regards to images. Sort of caught that bus a lot later than I should've.

Good news about that is I did pull off a bunch of stuff from my old HDD and it looks like a lot of it might actually be totally relevant.

Regarding my earlier statement about an image of Michelle's prosthetic: I did not find one. For now text descriptions will have to do. Sorry about that too.

>>31487056
First off, you're welcome! Secondly, hmm.

Gut instinct says probably not until next Monday. I've got a lot going on this week and it'll be very unlikely I can block off a big chunk of time to dedicate to questing.

I'm a lurker! fun quest.

also what exactly is her prosthetic? i'll check my charart folder

"it's matte black alloy and semi-gloss carbon fiber.

It's stronger (but not by a whole lot...it's still anchored in her very-flesh-and-blood shoulder and back), and her wrist can rotate a full 360 degrees (which is a neat party trick/good wiping your ass)." taken from >>31486391

it looks more fashionistic and chic than utilitarian and something they'd give a vet soldier

the image I had in mind before the description was something like pic related, its oddly hard to find a cybernetic arm which replicates the skeleton without any skin or muscle although Deus Ex: HR has some very nice cybernetic arms, but they might be a little too gaudy for Michelle's
>>
>>31487183

also this is an amazing site for cyberpunk art in general. GO BROWSE

>>
>>31487193
Purely for personal use, I agree. Michelle's arm is stripped the hell down.

The Human Revolution art book was my first stop. There's some good stuff in there but nothing that quite captured the minimalist feel I wanted.

That image is getting warmer, though. That's pretty neat. I love that "bicep."

I like that one too. I doubt there are many images of a prosthetic arm with a distinct ulna and radius. From a materials science perspective (the only kind that matters for something like this, really...) it makes a lot more sense to have a single tube rather than mimic the bones.

Still hoping there might be one though.
