Notes on Rolls and Voting:

When I request rolls, each set of three rolls counts for one action. For example, a two-step plan would take the first 6 linked rolls. A particularly bad failure can interrupt a string of actions.

When rolling 1d100, I will consider criticals within the first ten linked rolls. Only criticals that occur in the first three rolls will be counted as "supercrits". This is still the case even if you'd have plan long enough to require more than ten rolls.

When rolling 1d20, the rules are the same, but I only consider criticals for the first five rolls, rather than ten. Criticals in the first three are still "supercrits".

When a plot choice results in extensive debate, I'll try to weed out the most popular trains of thought, and then call a vote on them. When voting, please respond with only a link back to the post and the number corresponding to your opinion. Other votes are discounted, including those with dice rolls or extra spaces.

Finally, note that this is not a democracy; it is a benevolent dictatorship.

You are the Archmage Yi Fang, and you stand with your commanders on the hills east of the Evinbrook Basin. Your troops number about 113,000 - less than half the enemy forces. Luckily, your air force outnumbers them by similar margins.

Auriel is slowly bullying back the enemy airforce in a chess match of altitude and spacing. Nothing much has come of it but some exchanged cannon fire in the clouds high above.

Below you, your forces, having baited the main enemy legion, are now retreating back across the top of the basin. The enemy is marching forward slowly.

Councilor Yong Xu recommended you take the opportunity to bloody the enemy's front lines, but Tae Wong maintained caution. You decided to let things play out on their own, for now.

Things proceed as planned. The main enemy force continues to move down and into the valley.

"Fang!" Arcturis shouts.

"...yes?"

"Let's have a little action!" he says. "Their front lines are exposed. My men and I are set to charge."

"Patience is a virtue."

"Well, I'm sick and tired of waiting!"

"We'll be moving up our first line in moments," you tell him. "If you'd prefer to lead, you may. Just remember to retreat when the time is right."

"Hmph. Well."

"The plan depends on it."

"Is that the only word you know? Plan?"

You sigh.

Arcturis may be a capable leader of his men, but can you really rely on him to get the job done? Things are at the most sensitive stage.

You decide to:

>Let Arcturis lead stage two of the plan: the feigned main attack, and subsequent repeated retreat. He may be a bull, but he'll be able to tear himself free when the time comes.
>Assign one of your councilors the task. You can't let the hothead send you all to the Nether.
>This might be a good chance to rid yourself of that leech, Prule Waterford. The front lines tend to be dangerous...

Your hand is full of cards to play, and they can be played at any time.

>The Black Lady's main force lies in wait east of the river. It can be commanded forward at any time.
>Steward will be necessary to cap off the north end of the valley. His construct will have to be summoned with the right timing.
>Steward himself tells you that he can burn his mobile platform in exchange for a burst of power. That may prove useful in a pinch.
>Haven and Vellik's forces serve as a reserve to assist if there are any sudden problems.
>Vaz Grak's orc warriors and Great Tree's werewolves are both highly resistant to magic. They'll prove formidable shock troops.
>Melody has the Staff of Winds, and you have your fighter fleets. The enemy won't see that attack coming.
>Your Bone Titan will come in handy at some point. But not too early.
>You can take to the field yourself, if the troops need a morale boost. But you can't afford to become overly-exposed, or dragged into prolonged conflict.
>The angels - while they ostensibly remain on your side - are a precision tool of destruction. You might need them when the enemy puts together a targeted offensive, but if you rely on them too much, you could be exposing your backside.
>Abigail is nearby, resting in the tents with Shadow, and one of Haven's representatives, Ila. You could consult with them, if need be. They'll make a powerful strike team. Shadow is keeping in close contact with Auriel, and has told you he might travel to the Nemesis at some point.
>Hecate and Hemmelus are higher on the ridge behind you, waiting to cast their spell.
>You can always use "That". But you'd like to save it for Sandalphon, if possible.
>Consult with allied commanders, or consider the situation. Sometimes it's better to think before you leap.

Briefly, you consider throwing Waterford to the wolves.

But no. If his leadership fails, your lines may suffer.

"Alright, Lord Flint," you say. "Lead the charge. But remember, we're building a line to tempt them into splitting us apart. When the time comes, you must retreat."

"I'm not a fool, Fang. Watch and learn."

You sigh again. You've been at this longer than he's been alive. Aging grey-haired men just can't seem to wrap their heads around the fact that others might have more experience. "Be sure to come back in one piece. I have plans for you."

"...fucking plans..." Arcturis secures his helmet and turns to his knights. "Forward the cavalry!"

The order is shouted down the line. "Forward the cavalry!"

"Forward the cavalry!"

"Ride for Arland!"

"For Arland!"

----------
----------

Arcturis, together with his lords Waterford and Andersen, lead the charge. Your own massed pikemen bring up the flanks, maintaining formation on either end of your core of mages and soldiers. The cavalry trots out in front.

Melody's primary force swings in from the river on the right side. The men retreating from the oncoming demons escape between your two lines, then turn to form up and seal the gap. Now, the stage is set - the lines close in quickly.

A point of Wind gathers around the front of the cavalry. The horses break forward. Lines of green light flicker and enclose over the speartip of the cavalry charge, coating all of the mage-knights. But it's not just from Arcturis - every knight is contributing to the spell, forming a massive stormfront that roils before the galloping horses.

You've seen this before. It was how Sebastian defeated you outside the then-piddling town of Arland.

The demonic forces lob magic, globs of fire and bolts of lightning. The wall of Wind deflects and shreds the spells, tossing their remnants upward, where they explode and dissipate harmlessly. Waves of arrows attempt to stem the cavalry, but the wind knocks tears the wood to pieces.

The enemy lines hesitate. The volleys of magic grow erratic as the mages become desperate. Archers are still firing. They have no response.

Perfect.

The cavalry slams into the demonic lines. The Wind seems to move with the horses, trampling down their enemies and making them wince with cuts and scrapes, pushing them to turn up their spears and their shields. It's a long time before the spell dissipates and the cavalry is brought to a halt.

Arcturis, thankfully, knows better than to get embroiled in melee, where his mounts are more vulnerable. The charge wheels about. While some men die as they retreat, the damage inflicted on the enemy is worth it. Your own mages use magic to cover the Arland knights as they make their escape.

Melody's advance force takes advantage of the confusion, pressing into the demons' broken front line. For the moment, you have a strong and decisive advantage.

The second main legion of demons is marching around the left flank of the first, in a slow and inevitable flanking maneuver. They're entering the valley.

"...it's working!" Xu says. "Ha!"

Wong rolls his eyes at you. You smirk. Well, the young are prone to such outbursts.

I'm expecting that Eclipse will end up being used when Sandalkong starts doing his big >MUH HYPERION speech and we have to storm the sigil.
>>
>>31498019

As soon as there is a crumbling weakness in the demonic lines, I'd suggest sending in the Orcs and Werewolves.

If we can decisively crush one flank of the army, we'll be able to wheel around to crush the remaining forces.

At the same time, Melody's forces to the North can move forwards, giving Kan-Abar a dilemma where to place its own troops.

Never give your enemies a problem - give them a dilemma.
>>
>inb4 the Shadow Magic Tree completion bonus is constantly having Eclipse active
>>
>>31498019
Can we have the airships provide us with recon? I suspect that Sandalphon's meddling might have allowed the enemy to plan around our strategy.

If not, can we send Ila on recon to make sure the Kanians are all where we expect?
>>
>>31498019
>let things continue
From what i gather things are moving as we want and the cavalry charge just now made things favorable. I don't see how we can improve.
>>
>>31498137

No support for letting our shock troops enter the fray into the damaged flank of the demonic army?

I'd really caution AGAINST letting Kan-Abar's lines stabilize and begin to push back. We've dealt them a heavy initial blow - we must keep our momentum and ensure that the enemy does not regain morale.
>>
>>31498266
I'd support it but I think people are waiting for something to go wrong before playing their hand.
>>
>>31498219

You have this intelligence. They've taken the formation that you expected.

At the moment, they're moving how you want them to move.

You suspect that if Sandalphon is in contact with Kullia, he likely omitted specifics about the attack. At the end of the day, he does want the demons dead; needless bloodshed isn't his priority.

However, you wouldn't put it past him to imperil Archon's forces by some means.

--------
--------

The cavalry makes its full turn relatively unmolested, but the demons are quick to recover - very quick. They react to pain, but they don't fear it, or death - no. You have to keep in mind that it's like fighting undead.

The lines are drawn, Melody's forward force on the right, your own mages and Arcturis on the left. The first legion spreads out across your entire line, although it's quite a bit deeper than yours. The fight continues for some minutes. Reports start to come in, mostly on casualties. A trickle of wounded begins to form from the back of your lines and into your rear encampment in the hills. You can sense the healing magic start in the gully near Hemmelus.

The demons are massing in the center of their line. You suspect that they're going to try to wedge between Vampiria and Arland.

Meanwhile, the second legion has almost made it around the end of its first. They'll soon start to spread out over your left flank.

There's an intelligence report that a large number of mages closer to Evinbrook are gathering. They're probably planning some sort of heavier counterattack.

What do you do?

>Signal the retreat now. You don't want any unnecessary damage.
>Send in shock troops to deter the enemy wedge. Batter their weakened lines to help cover your subsequent retreat.
>Risk sending a team behind enemy lines to investigate the report (specify)
>some other strategy
>>
>>31498266
I think it's more not wanting to overextend ourselves before they've used their trump cards. It's only the beginning of the fight, they're guaranteed to restabilize at some point. it's not going to crumble that easily.
>>
>>31498381

I say we signal the retreat now.

If we pull back now, it will look like we're losing our nerve for the counterattack.

No point in wasting men when we plan on retreating anyways.
>>
>>31498381

>Send in shock troops to deter the enemy wedge. Batter their weakened lines to help cover your subsequent retreat.

>>31498427
This sounds like a good idea.If they see something too dangerous, the Nemesis can shoot while cloaked, right?
>>
>>31498428
>>31498431

Thirding this. We probably cannot stop the wedge from forming entirely, but we need the retreat to look legitimate.

Maybe toss some of our summons into the mix if we can extend them that far.
>>
>>31498471
It can.
>>
>>31498471

I'd prefer to keep the Nemesis itself cloaked until we have a clearer picture about where the BIG FISH are going to be battling, but we could definitely send another heavily-armed Airship that way.
>>
>>31498471

Auriel reports that she is currently using the Nemesis's cloaking abilities to frighten off the enemy airships. She's partially cloaking the airship, then flying it elsewhere, then uncloaking another segment. This is projecting the illusion that we have more airships than we actually do.

She can fully cloak to investigate the enemy activities but it will slow down the effort to establish aerial superiority.

WE'VE BEEN RUSED
>>
You reach for you radio and click the button to speak. A bit of Wind sparks inside of it.

You'll have to look into this device, later.

"Auriel."

"Fang? That you? I'm a little busy!"

"As are we all. A report tells me that the mages behind the legions are gathering. They could use a volley of airship fire to help them along, don't you think?"

"I'll see what I can do!"

"Thank you."

You attach the radio to a holster on your armor. You raise your hand, and focus a bit of magic. A sigil appears there - a shorter range form of communication, when compared to the radio, but good enough for a battle. "Councilor To."

"Archmage." You hear the sounds of clashing weapons. An explosion echoes through the sigil. "Things are getting heated. Do you have orders?"

"Put some summons on their center. Don't let them push us back before we retreat."

"Understood."

Your sigil fades.

In the distance, you feel twin eruptions of Lightning and Water. Everyone around you glances to the north.

Parting the clouds are two beams of magic. One crackles with a gold light; the other glows with a blue haze. They barrel for the flatlands north of the basin.

A black dome, formerly invisible to the your senses, flares to life. The two cannon strikes are diverted, but explode on the ground nearby. Apparently there's a demon lord there, but you probably caused them a significant amount of collateral damage.

Auriel's voice crackles through your radio. "Fang, they've got one of the lords down there."

"I noticed."

"I don't want to fire again so soon, I'll give away my position. I put a nice crater in the ground, though."

"Good work. Keep an eye on them."

"Aye-aye."

Meanwhile, you sense magic back on the field. You turn to look. Councilor Ming To forms the core of your sudden summoning battalion, focusing on a variety of Shadow summons, including one Colossus. And just in time - a huge force of minotaurs comes stomping out of the enemy lines.

The summons clash. The herd of minotaurs beats at the feet of the colossus, but the summon, four men tall, simply ignores them, swinging its arms to smash them back. In response, they conjure a wave of netherfire. Many of the summons are burned away, but the colussus is merely singed, and with it as a pillar, your lines remain stable. A good thing you didn't call for undead...they would have been burned to a crisp.

"Good choice, Archmage," Wong says. "But I think it's time for the retreat."

He's right. The second legion is already splitting around your line. At this rate, they'll meet with your troops in less than a minute. And Melody already seems to be backing off on the right side, retreating toward the river.

What do you do?

So one of the Demon Lords is hanging back near Evinbrook.

As expected they're hanging back and waiting until the chaotic energies reach their maximum before coming forward, very likely continuously summoning reinforcements in the meantime.

Perhaps we should send a general query out to watch out for places of congregating mages, that may shown where the others are hiding in undetectable black domes.

"Sound the retreat," you say. You grasp your radio to give the order to Arcturis personally - just in case. "Lord Flint."

You hear something that sounds about like Wind tearing apart bone. "HAA! Take that you stinking filth!" There's another sound like a weapon sinking into flesh.

"...Lord Flint?"

"Ah? What? Fang. What do you want?"

"It's time for the retreat. Get your cavalry back here. My mages will cover you."

"Right. I'll see you shortly!"

The radio cuts out. You hope the fool can keep his wits about him long enough to see this through.

But your worries are unfounded, because soon enough, the lines start to part. Ming To's colossus sacrifices itself to cover the backs of the cavalry. After repeated walls of fire, and minotuars gouging at its legs, it collapses, and is then set upon by a horde of satyrs and blasted apart by imps.

>con't
>>
Melody's forward force is baiting the back line of Kanian mages while the two legions converge to pin Arcturis. He continues to back off, and you signal your own main force foward. Your lines of soldiers march out from between the hills and down into the basin.

The flanking legion, seeing the oncoming army, is forced to turn - that stops Arcturis from being cut off. Meanwhile, Melody's men have their backs to the river. The gathered mages are still there, preparing their spell, and apparently shielded by one of the lords. Aside from its defensive maneuver, it hasn't moved.

All exactly as planned. You prepare to give the Order to Melody and Steward to forward the main forces and cap the valley.

Something oozes from the lines of the first demonic legion - a gas, a mist. It rolls across the ground like an opaque black fog.

You remember the way it was described to you before - the demon lord responsible for infecting your men with that disease. It's howling toward Arcturis's retreating lines, trying to destroy him before he can meet up with the main body of your mages.

What do you do?

>warn Arcturis - tell him to use the Windburn to drive off the gas
>send out Abigail and Ila, who are resistant to disease, to combat the demon lord
>sent in the orcs - they'll probably be somewhat resistant to the infectious poison
>some other strategy

>warn Arcturis - tell him to use the Windburn to drive off the gas

If necessary, have Abigail and Ila harass the demon lord for a bit before coming back.
>>
>>31499491
Considering Archon created Orcs, shouldn't Fang know if they are resistant to ailments?
>>
>>31499491
Do we know exactly where the demon lord is?
>>
>>31499491
>send out Abigail and Ila, who are resistant to disease, to combat the demon lord

I think that Arcturis will get too tired if he uses windburn, and he's probably really good for the troops' morale, so we want him to stay fighting for as long as possible. Abigail was going toe to toe with Shadow, so her and Ila should be able to hold it off... maybe.
>>
>>31499491
SM could Shadow pretend to be Abigail's summon without anyone realizing what he really is?
>>
>>31499491
>warn Arcturis - tell him to use the Windburn to drive off the gas
Wind seems like a good way to combat a gas based threat. Also, Arcturis being able to use the Windburn is no news to anyone. Abigail's armor and the orcs are still secrets.
>>
>>31499491
Since the mages near evinbrook are continuing their spell while being protected by the Demon Lord, is there anyone who we could specifically warn about that?

For the poison gas send Abigail and Ila, since they're literally immune.
But warn Arcturis to haste or do something windy to blow away the gas anyways, since the Demon Lord responsible for it isn't quite in view yet.
>>
>>31499491

1) Warn Arcturis! Tell him of the fog that will infect his men, but let him know that he doesn't have to use the Windburn - just keep the smog at bay. Between Arcturis and the knights, they should be able to combine their Wind magics and hold out as they retreat, right?

2) Send in Abigail and Ila immediately, maim the Demon Lord but tell them not to dig in, we're just looking to distract the Lord. Once the fog begins evaporating, Ila and Abigail should retreat.
>>
>>31499577
Arcturis used Windburn for a long time against Meta. He knows how to pace himself, and he's coming right back to our lines anyways.
>>
>>31499491
What's the range and size of Spirit Squall? Could we use it to repel the poison mist?

Alternately, would dragons have sufficient size and wing power to repel the mist by hovering?
>>
>>31499567
Good point
>>
>>31499491
>>warn Arcturis - tell him to use the Windburn to drive off the gas
>>
>>31499644
Spirit Squall is short-ranged. Think of it like Fang's version of Void Ring, except monodirectional.
>>
>>31499644

Wait, can we do something Archmage-y, SM?

Can we cast a low-powered Spirit Squall to slow the fog and potentially give Ila and Abigail more attack time and Arcturis time to retreat?
>>
>>31499583
>SM could Shadow pretend to be Abigail's summon without anyone realizing what he really is?

You consider the idea, and remember that he could very easily hide in her shadow, just in case she gets in over her head.

Which, knowing your niece, is a likely possibility.

>>31499575

The orcs were designed to be resistant to magic. While this is indeed the case, a demon lord's abilities are on another level. Some of them may die outright; others impeded. The strongest would likely be unharmed.

>>31499535

A combination of strategies might be more effective...

>>31499627

Steward, who will be in close combat with that force once he caps the valley, is monitoring the situation.

>>31499644

Spirit squall is large but is centered on an area in front of you.

---------
---------

So:

Warn Arcturis about the poison gas, and send out Abigail and Ila to deter the Demon Lord. Shadow can hide in Abigail's shadow.

It's a dark night, and mostly cloudy, but there will still be a sliver for shadow to sit in.
>>
>>31499491
Warn Arcturis about it, but don't necesarily tell him to use the windburn immediately. if he needs to, sure, but if other magic will suffice, then use it. in the meantime, Abigail and Ila should distract the Lord from producing any more. not to kill him, but just to interrupt the flow.
>>
>>31499491
While the windburn is forceful it's mostly cutting and slashing with the occasional super friction burning that Matthel pulled off. What we'd want Arcturis to do so blow the fog back enough that it goes into the enemy forces and avoids his cavalry. Get him and his knights to summon a gale behind them to push it back instead.

Prep Ila and Abigail, they'll be needed if that Demon Lord advances.
>>

You grab your radio. "Arcturis, watch that mist! Anyone that inhales it is as good as dead!"

"I see it. What the hell is it?"

"One of the demon lords is making it. Get your men to summon a wind, push it back. I'm sending help." You turn to the tents. <Abigail, your presence is required. Bring the Ila girl.>

Abigail strides out. She's decked from head-to-foot in hard leather armor that you enchanted personally. Ila wears full-body chainmail covered by armor on her legs, forearms, and torso.

<You told me that Shadow's protection gives you immunity from disease?>

Abigail nods. <Yeah.>

<That's right.> The calm voice of the Elemental Lord that calls himself after his element echoes from Abigail's shadow. <No disease will effect us.>

<You're sure?>

<I would stake my life on it.>

<But would you stake Abigail's life on it?>

The Shadow pauses for a moment. <Yes.>

<Alright. You'll run distraction while Arcturis makes his escape. Just drive the demon off - don't get into a deathmatch.>

<Got it,> Abigail says.

<Understood,> Ila says. You like that girl, Ila. She doesn't talk much, but she seems quite capable. Hopefully she'll prove a voice of reason for the other two.

<Then move out.>

Abigail and Ila start running. Wings spout from their back. Scales of shadow grow over their spines, legs, and arms, forming a sort of embedded armor. You've never seen magic like that.

It strikes you that Erebus himself is romantically attached to your niece.

While he hasn't realized his true powers, the relationship is beneficial. You know he expected you to balk when he revealed his true identity, but in giving immediate approval, you cemented the relationship he has with her. You're glad you thought quickly enough to lock him in. As far as political marriage goes, there aren't many higher candidates than the Lord of Darkness.

You take a breath to clear your thoughts, then begin to focus on a spell. A sigil glows under your feet. You channel the mana carefully, creating a direction, constructing the forces, placing its point of unleashment out and deep into the black mists.

A strong Wind blows over the encampment, ruffling tents and whipping flags. It grows as it nears the knights. A green tinge of mana enters it, and the fog is stopped, pushed at by the pressure of the wind.

You unleash your Spirit Squall.

A flickering storm of orange light erupts at the edge of the mists. A hole is blasted in the spoke. Whips and crackling Spirit strike back the fog as if it's a visceral thing. That gives you an important clue - that magic can only be counter by magic. You're glad you chose that solution...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HfBlM_fo61A

As the hole widens, you see the demon lord itself, standing in the center of its foggy cloud. It's a grotesque, distorted creature. A twisted torso sits upon the enlarged body of a spider. The long limbs have too many joints, and each ends in glistening claws.

Abigail and Ila dive into the hole in the mist. Abigail strikes first, leading with a blast of Shadow magic from her left hand. The creature nimbly leaps, and tries to land upon her. Abigail tries to turn, but she isn't as skilled with her wings as an angel.

A warped tendril of shadow - or of something - strikes out from underneath her, landing a blow right in the spider's belly. The demon lord is flicked away.

Without its constant focus, the mists are beginning to dissipate. It retreats slowly, keeping its front legs off the ground and swiping threateningly. Abigail and Ila stand along in the middle of the field, watching it. Apparently it doesn't want a straight fight...another clue, then?

The enemy lines are approaching rapidly. The demon lord begins to melt. It turns into a sort of black sludge, and then sinks into the ground. You can feel it retreat through the trampled dirt and rocks just under the surface. Abigail and Ila decide better of standing in the open and move back with Arcturis.

Melody's forces are crossing the river en masse. The push on the mages looks like it's working so far.

Your main force is lining itself up to take the oncoming rush of enemy forces.

Your radio crackles. "Steward 001, reporting."

"Steward. What do you have for me?"

"Enemy spell is achieving criticality. It appears to be a counter to Vampiria's river crossing. I am debating two options."

"Continue."

"First. I wait until the enemy spell is completed before capping the valley with Battle Platform 003. They will focus all of their attention on Vampiria, leaving me with a clear strike upon many of their mages."

The thought of leaving Melody to deal with whatever they're cooking up does not strike you as appealing.

Melody. You try to steady your breathing. Why is she out here, again? She's alive, for the sake of Spirit, she's alive, and somehow she decided you were still worth the time.

No. Can't be sentimental. You can do that after you crush your enemy.

"...what is the second option?"

"Second. I bring forward the Battle Platform immediately. They will focus their attention on me, instead. It is a determination of which variable is more likely to succeed."

"What do you think?"

"The Battle Platform will hold off a demon lord in direct combat, but not indefinitely," Steward says. "Eventually, I will be forced to burn its fuel reserves to make a direct impact. However, I am more inclined to sacrifice artificial constructs, rather than unrepairable organic souls, should the benefits be clear."

Let's believe in Melody. She is a god-tier mage, after all. Let's make sure to warn her now, though.
>>
>>31500313
Airship Nightblaze that shit.
>>
>>31500313
If we decide to let them mass against them, can we warn Melody of what we're planning so they can create their own counters before the spell hits? we want to minimize casualties on all sides of our forces.

>tell Steward to hang back; Vampiria will take a hit, but it will be better in the long run

Inform Melody of the plan.

"Melody, Steward is going to wait until that big spell goes off before moving 003 forward. Can you hold your position?"

Giant robot time SM?
>>
>>31500313

1) Warn Melody immediately.

2) Tell Steward to hold off, we need the proper timing for the Mobile Platform.

3) Have the Nemesis prepare to fire onto the Mages - the moment that the spell is released, have the Nemesis fire main Water Gun on location.

>>31500414

They are going to unleash the spell in less than a minute. It is unknown what sort of a spell it is.

>>31500423

You raise your radio. You almost say Melody - but you stop yourself. "Vampiria, this is the Archmage. Come in."

There's a crackle. "Fang? This is the lady."

"The mages you're baring down on are planning something big."

"I know. I can feel it."

"Steward can take the hit for you, but it would better if he had an open field. Can you hold your position?"

"...I can."

Try to analyze that spell. We have Genius-level Detect Magic, don't we?
>>
>>31500313
Actually, We can probably do well with sending in 003 first if we also send some kind of back up with it.
Since this is mages, We should send some orcs. Vampiras forces, if theyre are actually vampires in it, are going to get ganked by magic.

>>31500548
I thought they were going back to the ship.
>>
>>31500564

Correction - one of the strongest being in the SQ universe and she also has the fucking Staff of the Winds and advance notice of the spell
>>
>>31500509
This could work, actually. Can we send Orcs in to soak some of the magic, then 003 in at the mages?
>>
>>31500518

Defensive Cards:

>backup battalions including the werewolves, orcs, Felnoir rangers, Valeria's elves, Duke Vellik's soldiers
>your mini-airship fleet, in conjunction with Melody's staff
>Bone Titan (not at maximum effectiveness yet)
>Yourself, in person
>Abigail, Shadow, Ila strike team
>Adavan-led Archon strike team (note that Adavan is currently chilling with Hecate and Hemmelus
>"That"
>>
>>31500576

Less than a minute, that isn't a lot of time to find a high-flying airship.
>>
>>31500579
Right, that. Let's emphasis to her that this is a spell cobbled together by several mages and a demon lord, we could even expect blood magic as a possibility as well. Use all means to deflect it, basically.

Could still have the Nemesis do a disruptive flyby when they try casting it.

Yi Fang's Little Box of Horrors.

It must never be used.
>>
>>31500651
What, act as human shields between Vampiria and the Demon Lord?

The spell might not need to go through them.

And the mages are protected by demons, so the orcs' direct assault wouldn't be so great.
>>
>>31500704
It'll look like Abigail does it?

>>
>>31500691
I really don't think letting one of the cap off forces that are needed for the central plan just "take" a hit before they're stuck in the real battle is the best idea, if we can actually deal with it in better ways.
>>
>>31500713

I agree with your assessment. Sending in the Orcs with no back-up is a bad move and doesn't give us anything.
>>
Was Erebus gay? Was that why he Arbiter'd Dave?
>>
>>31500737

Yes?

>>31500749
Obviously.

>>
>>31500739

Melody's whole purpose in this battle is to attract attention and prevent the northern armies of Kan-Abar from joining with the southern armies.

They'll be okay.
>>
>>31500625
>>31500579
I'll second these. Encourage the use of the staff for defensive purposes. Though she'd be sensible to do that anyways.
>>
>>31500758

>>
>>31500704
Having Abigail unveil her armour might move the suspicions and/or blame to her.

Nobody has seen it thus far. it is not as if anybody knows what the hell she is capable of, it might cause the demons to freak out and move her up in target priority.
>>
>>31500752
They can also both go into super stealth mode with their shadow majjyks and get close to the mages to do it.

By which I mean just Abigail. No one will see the source of the spell right.

>>
>>31500758
>Have Shadow fire off a Nightblaze, make it look like Abby and Ila did it
>>
>>31500758
No, how plausible is it to send Abigail and her shadow running in to Nightblaze

I forget if the range he needs is known.
>>
>>31500798

Sending in the mini-fleet with no understanding of what the spell is might be a poor tactical decision.

Anyways, the mini-fleet should only be utilized when we have air superiority - otherwise the enemy airships will shoot our tiny fighters out of the air.
>>
>>31500758
What. No. Those are terrible on their own. Get her to use the staff for defense.

>>31500798
Because this is for her forces and the Nemesis is doing a drive-by so it can stay in stealth without having its location given off, which is what the mini fleet would do.
>>
>>31500752
Actually, can we proxy buy tree gift and give Ila purple shadow tree? Then she could really use nightblaze...

>This is the most sensitive part of the plan. The Black Lady's smaller force will move up the river in a feigned flank attack. This is designed to split the enemy forces."

>He draws a triangle with his finger around the northern green, orange, and black blocks. "We'll appear to be attempting a flank along the river with a smaller force, while making ourselves a wedge. In reality, we're baiting them into attempting their own flanking maneuver. They'll see the weak swinging arm from Vampiria and think to simply drive them into the river. At the same time, their vastly larger battalion will try to move deeper into the valley and swing down around us. I've predicted their movements with the red arrows.

>"This is the most dangerous time," Fang says. "If we're too slow, there's a real chance we could be encapsulated. But I don't think that will happen, because we still have plenty of room to withdraw - and withdraw we shall, back right where we came from. The northeastern segement of the Kanians will see us apparently abandoning Vampiria to avoid the larger, more devastating flank, and press forward.
>>
"Alright. Hold position. Get ready, you might need the staff."

"I will decide when and where that is used, thank you."

"Just a suggestion."

"Are you concerned?" You hear her chuckle. "How sweet." Her end cuts out.

You re-tune the signal. "Steward. Hold position until Melody is fully engaged with the enemy. Use 003 only when you have the right moment."

"Understood. Secondary report: the construct that has replaced Shadow is now engaging the demon lord in Kan-Abar. Sandalphon is holding position outside the palace."

"...alright. We might have company soon. Auriel, go in low again if you can, fire at that spell."

"Got it!"

You put the radio away. Hopefully that construct can hang on a while longer. Things aren't right where you need them to be.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n0fQSHCHPl8

The spell erupts on the north end of the battlefield. Everyone turns again. Sparks of Shadow and Spirit fly into the air, forming a wide cone shape. You see things moving inside of the cone - people? No. They're flying.

Crow demons. Hundreds, thousands of them. They pour from a gateway in the ground, flock after flock, storming into the air with a hail of feathers and cawing shrieks. The massive horde of the monsters turns in the air and plummets straight for Melody's front lines.

Your radio crackles on the general frequency. You hear her voice. "They're going to regret that."

You see a Green-Black spark in the middle of Vampiria's forces. It flickers unsteadily for a moment as Melody struggles to control it.

And then you feel the results. Something is gathering in the sky. The clouds begin to turn unnaturally. Grey thunderheads build at an alarming rate.

A tornado extends down from the sky. Flecks of green light extend from the cyclone. A face is at its end - a skull, comprised of the souls trapped in the skysever, caught by the will of Melody's staff. The smoking specter, trailing its tornado tail, slams into the flock of crows.

Battle shrieks turn into cries of pain. Their wings are ripped of, and then their bodies eviscerated. You see beaked demons catapulted at amazing speeds away from the winds, only to smash into the ground, dead. They're the fortunate ones. The others are sucked into the cyclone and eaten away to the bone.

"Holy shit!" You see the Nemesis between the clouds, for a moment. Your eyes widen. The airship is huge - larger than when you last saw it, at least twice the size. Its cloaking seems to have been temporarily disturbed by the sheer force of the winds. "I'm glad I pulled out of that!" It vanishes back into the sky.

The tornado begins to dissipate. "...ah...that oughta...hold em."

You take up the radio again. "Me - my Lady. Are you alright?"

"Quite. Just tires me out a bit. I'll be fine in a minute."

"Alright."

Steward's voice crackles in. "Threat eliminated. 003 is on standby."

We're an agent of darkness created by a secret alliance between Va'ad, , which was used to assist in the creation of the Alliance in heavy support of Archon and the rebel Haven mages. It coincides with Fang letting Sandles take us to the ring city to free shadow mages, something Vampiria would want in on for obvious reasons from his perspective, and it would be corroborated by Matthel who witnessed us withstand the windburn and would've told Sandles by now that he thinks we're from Vampiria.

Everything with his own paranoia perfectly works in line for him to believe that we, are in fact; a Robot.

"Steward, it's time."

"Understood. Preparing Launch of Construct 003 Model 68."

At the far north of the valley, even past the fighting lines of the mages and Vampiria's soldiers, you see a rising brown glow. It looks like the aura in the skies of the frozen north - a sort of unsteady, wavering light.

"Initializing Rapid Transport Protocol."

The brown light grows higher. It's massive - almost as tall as the distant ruins of Evinbrook castle. The cylinder of brown light touches the bottom of the clouds still rolling from the Staff of Winds.

"Transport Commencing."

-wooooooOOOOOOSSSH-
-BOOM-

Earth magic echoes out from the north side of the battlefield. One moment, the space is empty - and in the next, is a truly titanic construct. While vaguely humanoid, you think it pass for a moving castle.

A heavy rumbling roar like ten thousand horns from ten thousand lighthouses shakes the air in your very chest.

"Sound serves to disrupt morale. Do not be alarmed."

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GzpyUYIKp9I

"Synchronizing intelligences."

Six lights glow on the construct - one on each shoulder, one on each knee, one in its center, and one on its head. Earth magic connects each of them in a dazzling show of flickering browns and greens that gives the staff of winds competition.

"Commencing attack."

The construct steps forward. It's like the aftershock of a small earthquake with every thundering boot. Dozens of missiles fire from the construct's back, clearing a path in front of it with explosions. It reaches the enemy lines and proceeds to smash directly through them with a kick. A wave of bodies flies into the air.

Question.

Is there any reason, given the huge number of corpses lying about, why we can't summon a Bone Titan, then summon another one once the first one dies?

The mages are dazed, but the respond fiercely after taking the first few blows. Waves of flying summons - ghosts, wisps, succubi, imps, and surviving crows take to the skies. They're intercepted by smaller flying constructs, and the field in front of 003 devolves into all-out melee.

Beam of light lance from 003's carapace. The lasers of Earth strike only its enemies - the constructs seem to know exactly when and where they're going to be fired, and move out of the way only as the last moment. The flying creatures are swatted from the sky likes flies with a robotic precision.

Stands to reason.

Melody's armies take the opportunity to surge out from the riverbanks. With the Kanian lines caught between walking adamantium death and Vampiria's battle-hardened elites, they have no choice but to give ground.

Powerful beams of shadow catch your attention. 003's earth magic flares, protecting it from the full power of the attack - it doesn't have the speed to dodge. Still, it now sports three scars down its steel-adamantium casing.

"Demon Lord engaged," Steward says. It fires its horn again.

Meanwhile, the battle has entered full swing on all other fronts. Your lines are pushed against the demonic hordes and the Kanian soldiers all across the length of the valley - the positioning stages are complete. You're holding in most areas; some parts of the valley have devolved into melee. But Steward's mighty call is like a battle cry for your forces. You're holding strong, with a definite advantage in casualties.

Things have progressed quickly. Sunrise is still distant.

"Just a little longer," she says. "They know we have the advantage up here. We've even gotten some unanswered shots in on one of their airships, but they won't back down. It might take a ship-to-ship battle to drive them back."

"We're going to need cover fire soon. The trap is sprung. They're going to start unloading the big guns."

"Alright. I'll see what I can do."

As if in answer to your prediction, another roar echoes over the battlefield - ugly and coarse. Something is growing in the middle of the enemy lines - and growing, and growing. It's like a twisted, mutated satyr, far too muscled for the size of its body. Its skin splits and trembles as it swells. Soon, it's towering over everything around it, man and demon. The second demon lord storms forward. A swept fist cracks through five men together.

You've got to counter that, and soon.

You prepare a few of the summons you have at the ready - four reapers and a dark colossus ought to give it a pause.

You reach for your radio and contact someone you'd rather not. But she is Sandalphon's designated stand-in, while he's away...

"6th Highest, come in. This is the Archmage."

"It's 5th Highest, now, Fang. What is it?"

"You're on board the Red Sun, yes? Can you see the demon lord chewing through my front lines?"

"Aye, we spotted it."

"We could use some Light to fend it off. Can you send a battalion?"

"Our own lines are getting chewed up," Anahita says. "I can spare anything right now. Sensors are telling me that sludge of a lord is heading my way."

You haven't received any reports confirming that, but none to contradict it, either. You look south from your perch on the hills. From what you can see, the empire is barely skirmishing with the demon's southern front. Atlantis, for their part, is at least pressing their lines in for direct battle.

You try to choose your words carefully. "It looks like they're letting the pressure off. If you can manage to - "

"I said no, Fang. You'll have to deal with it on your own." The radio cuts out.

"Useless bitch." You slot the radio away and sigh.

"What did you expect?" Xu says.

"I'm not quite sure. Maybe I'm growing soft in my old age."

Talking with Anahita wasted precious time. The demon lord has doubled in size. Every swing of its arms is tossing your soldiers into the air. Ethereal summons are rushing to fill the gap, but their natural resistance to physical attacks doesn't seem to be helping them. This creature is a little more deep than it seems...

In the distance, to the west, you spot an enemy airship. It appears to be smoking, but it's headed toward the front lines.

"Auriel, there's an enemy ship closing in."

"I see it. They're getting desperate. Consider it shot down."

You suppose you'll have to take her word at that.

What do you do about the demon lord?
