Sabbatine almost drags you as she runs towards the dormitories pulling you by the hand. You enter the building through the same door that you it through. True enough, she lives across the hall from you in room 088. You notice she simply opens her door, without a key. None of the rooms are lockable.

Sabbatine comes back out of her room holding a pile of clothes and a towel, then says, “Well, what are you standing around for? It's already 06:35 and we're both in need of a shower. You'll want to wear your dress uniform, like I said. Oh, and try to take a quick shower. There's shampoo and soap in the head, extra towels too.”

You go into your room, and grab the dress uniform from the armoire, electing to wear the pants bottoms. You're supposed to have a roommate, but there's not sign that she's been here. As you get your clothes, you notice a wrapped package underneath all of them, about the length of your arm. It has a familiar seal, so you go to open it up, but you hear Sabbatine tell you to hurry up.

You follow her to the “head.” It's set up with communal showers. She finishes a minute before you do, then tells you she'll be waiting outside. About five minutes into your shower, the water turns cold. You shriek, and you hear peals of laughter from outside. You finish up quickly, your hair finally neat.

Sabbatine is waiting out in the hallway, fully dressed, and says, “Well, let's go. The service starts at 07:00.”

In another hallway, you hearing a banging noise. You look to see a robed man carries a hammer and hits it against a round shield, a burning lho-stick between his lips. His bearded face looks somewhat familiar.

He is shouting, “Wake up already, lazy children! Are you telling me”

“Ah, I'll be right there. Just need to...do something first. We've got still got a bit of time left.”

You're afraid she'll question you, as it's the morning of your first day, what would you have to do? She raises her eyebrow a tiny bit, but only says “okay,” reminds you not to be late, then departs.

You return to your room, intending to find out exactly what that package is. You shut the door as firmly as you can and close the shutters of the window. You take out the package from the bottom of the armoire and sit down on the bed with it in your lap.

It is wrapped in simple brown paper and twine, and almost as long as your arm. On one side of the package is a wax seal, though it serves not to actually seal the package. Examining it, your mind goes back to your lessons under your private tutor on Alamos Primus. You had been made to memorize all the names, heraldries, and mottoes of every noble house of your home planet. But you'd recognize this one anywhere. It was all over your house. This is the seal of House Fuentes.

You carefully open the package, and find a note in the first fold of the paper. It reads:

“Your father left this in my possession before he died. I now return it to you. Use it well.”

Sitting on your lap is a main gauche, a parrying dagger. It is quite a beautiful thing, with its ivory grip and metal furnishings. This belonged to your father, and his father, and his father's father before him. It is a family heirloom, passed down to the heir, almost a sign of recognition and authority. This should have gone to your brother, instead of you, the eldest daughter. On the length of the blade is inscribed the family motto, barely visible, the blade being no stranger to use.

Gained: [Fuentes Blade of Succession: gain +1 to sword combat rolls]

seeing as its our dress uniform, which traditionally means a ceremonial sword or sabre is worn when appropriate, and its Emperor's Day, and it was left with our clothes, and the picture of Sabatine has her wearing one, its pretty obvious we can and probably should wear it, and besides, its much safer on our hip than in our room where it can be stolen

Though you wonder why this has gone to you and not your younger brother, a tear almost comes to your eye. You feel proud that your father felt fit to bestow this upon you. This may be the be the only thing you have of home for a long time. You think, though, that one day you may have to return this to your younger brother someday, but that could be long past leaving the Schola, as he's a mere babe now.

On the blade is the family motto, which reads, “Faith and Valor, From Ashen Fire, to the Sky,” reflecting history of military tradition in House Fuentes. You sheath the blade and put it in the belt of your uniform. All the materials used in its making come from Alamos Primus, the leather of the sheath and the ivory of the grip coming from a large boar-like beast. You wear the sheath on the belt of your uniform and head out. The chronograph on the wall reads 06:45.

As you step out of your room, the hallway is abuzz with young girls going about their morning routine. The drill abbot is still banging on his shield, yelling at all of them to get ready. The occupants of this floor seem to all be your age, but you see a few older girls about. It's a bit weird to see the drill abbot in the middle of the commotion of girls in varying states of dress. Everyone seems to be changing into dress uniform, and you see a few sabers hanging from hips, mostly on the few seniors. Is it an honor of some kind? The abbot sees you, fully dressed with your blade, and nods. You exit the dorm.

As you pass the male dormitory, you hear a yell from above you, “Dynamic entry, think fast!”

There's a blond boy jumping out of a window, saber coming down in a slash at you.

Weapon Skill: 10 3 5 = 2 successes

Your back is to him as he falls, saber in his right hand held up for a downward slash. You pivot counterclockwise on your right foot and draw your parrying dagger. He attempts to deliver the blow right before he lands, and you execute a downwards circular parry. There's a crack, and the upper half of his blade clatters across the pavement. He lands, off balance, and you kick his leg out from under him. He topples over onto back. Your boot is now scuffed.

There's another shout above you, from a dark-haired boy who comes to the same window who says, “Barty, you idiot, that's a ceremonial blade! This is the third time!”

You wonder what's going on here. You look to the side to see a drill abbot heading towards you, a large hammer slung on his back.

You don't have time for this. You should be heading straight to the temple. Wouldn't want to be late. You sheath your blade and turn away from the boy on the ground. The drill abbot lets you pass without a word, and you hear him shouting something about broken blades, PT, and payment as you walk away.

You arrive find to Sabbatine waiting at the doors to a side chapel, tapping her foot and pouting. You enter the chapel behind her. To call it a chapel though, would be like calling a grand cathedral on a shrine world a regular-sized church. The campus temple is the fourth largest single building on campus, right behind the gymnasium and dorms. This side chapel seats several hundred.

As you walk in, Sabbatine whispers, “We're celebrating separately from the rest of the schola today.”

She doesn't tell you why, only leaving you to wonder. By now, the chapel is filled up for the most part, uniformed students kneeling in prayer, facing the large stained glass window of the Emperor at the front of the chapel. There's small group apart from the rest on the right side, a stern faced abbot nearby them. The chapel is quiet enough that you can make out their whispers of confusion. They wonder why they are here. You recognize them as the sleepers who you arrived with, though you can't find the boy who's shoulder you slept on.

You take a seat in the third row from the front when Sabbatine recognizes her roommate. She introduces you to her as Alizabeth Davine. The red-haired girl gives you a nod, but stays silent. Her eyes, are...haunted. Sabbatine mentioned that most of your class were together since they were kids. You wonder if it's related to the “Wind” she mentioned.

The last ones to enter are a group of four boys. It's your attacker, his roommate, and two other boys. One of them is the boy from the truck. You're a bit surprised he's not with the others.
(1/?)
>>
A bell rings to mark the hour. A door opens to the front of the church, on the side. Gelus steps out. He begins the mass.

As a celebration of Emperor's Day goes, it's nothing different. After it ends, nobody leaves and Gelus turns to face the seated students.

“I am Drill Abbot Prime, Coriolanus Gelus. Today is your first day as cadets of the Schola Progenium. Many of you have been here since you were much younger, but today marks the start of your new lives. You orphans, rejected by fate, will be turned here into the chief cornerstones of the Imperium. You shall only ever rest on the Emperor's Day. My colleagues and I will be the hammers at the forge of this Schola. Education starts tomorrow. A practical lesson on the local planet. Sleep tight.”

With that, he dons a gas mask. Clouds of gas pour quickly into the chapel. You feel woozy. Not again.
