Having just helped Caillou defeat a giant mouse for its snacks, you, Tear and Louie went for the treasure chest while Caillou went straight home. What you find inside almost blows your adorable mind.

A large golden ornament, about half as big as you are, molded into the shape of a dragon. The craftsmanship is absolutely amazing, every single scale individually carved into the beat, its eyes etched so carefully that they gleam almost as if the thing is alive. You almost feel like you can make out the individual muscles of the neck under the scales supporting the dragon's neck as it stares you down.

"This... is amazing," Tear breaths beside you.

Louie is equally awed, "it looks so real."

You at least have the presence of mind to ask the real question: "Ne, Tear, how much is it worth?"

"I don't- I've not seen something like this before. It must be worth at least half a million."

"Half a-!!" you don't finish the thought, instead turning to stare in awe at the masterpiece.

"I'd have to get it checked with some contacts, then we must find a buyer right away! I don't even know of anyone in the city who could afford something like this."

No-one speaks for the trip home. You get back to the store without incident. After a while, Tear finally nudges you, "Recette? We still have the rest of the afternoon to use."

"Oh... right, yeah! Capitalism ho!"

Still in a light daze, you flip the store sign to [OPEN] and take your place behind the counter. Louie moves tot he back room to have a sit down. You're not sure why he's so overcome by the treasure. It's not like he'll ever see the money it fetches you.

It doesn't take long before you regret opening the store this morning. The first people to enter are a small band of thugs. They're all dressed suspiciously similarly to the last gang that tried to press you for protection money. You gesture for Tear to fetch Louie, but none of them seem to want to start anything. In fact, they are simply browsing your wares. Even the one in the suit is only absent-mindedly gazing your way every so often.

You crack your signature beam, addressing the men as one. "Good afternoon, gentlemen. Is there anything I can help you with? Perhaps something you're looking for?" A few of the rougher thugs flash their eyes at you, a hunger for violence burning clear.

The suited man answers for them, "Ah please don't mind us. We're just browsing." Louie appears at your side, one hand resting casually on the pommel of the sword at his hip. The suit cracks him a friendly smile, before returning to browsing your store.

"Hmhmm," Tear smirks to herself. "A rookie mistake," she whispers in your ear, "he admitted that they are all together. A fact which should not be revealed until they meant to act. Though it was obvious in any case. They are likely just scouting the store for now. They know their last group got this far before they were overcome, but nothing else."

"If you're not intending on buying anything, sirs, would you mind please leaving the store?" The suit gives you an icy stare, before nodding to his men. They start to file out of the store. "Thank you, sirs! Please come again!"

Tear frowns as the last one leaves. "We could've used them. If we could have taken that suit in for questioning..."

"But this is our store," you cut Tear off. "I don't want fighting in my store! Keep your gang wars to yourself!" Tear nods her acquiescence, giving no more argument to the matter. Louie sighs with relief, letting go of his sword and stepping back into the back room. You settle down again and await some hopefully more real customers.

Your hopes are dashed when the doorbell next rings and a cardboard box waddles its way into the store. You can hear some muffled voices from under the box.

"Hello, Box! Welcome to Recettear! Is there anything I can help you with today?" The box doesn't respond, but continues to shuffle its way around the store. "Uhm, Box? Hello? Can I..."

The voices in the box whisper to each other some more. "...knows we're here."
"Impossible! No-one could see through this ingenious disguise!"
"No, she can see it alright." You kick the box.
"AAAAH!"

The box is tossed into the air. A young blonde girl in a pretty purple dress springs to her feet, a hurt expression on her face. Beside her, a small brown fairy floats lazily up to head level.
"WHAT WAS THAT FOR?"

There are two stars of calamity!

>>
were really divided on this, eh?

So we have 2 for buttering her up, 2 for casually dismissing her, 1 for accepting a destined rival, and 2 for asking who she is?

We're the spirit of capitalism. We cannot dismiss something that may turn into an opportunity to profit.

On the other hand, rivalry is the opposite of monopoly, and we need monopoly.

I'm for asking her if she want to buy some of our (exensive) items and makes her leaves if she doesn't.

Do we have our shiv at hand?
>>

Monopolies are inherently self defeating so long as there are no substantial barriers to entry.

"Rival?? I, uh, I don't know about that. Who are you?"

"Ho? You aren't even educated enough to know that much?" Her haughty tone grates on you, but you keep your beaming smile as perfect as ever. "My name is Alouette, I am the future owner of Big Bash. I'm sure even a lowly plebeian such as yourself has heard of it." She puts her hands to her hips and puffs her non-existent chest out in pride.

You've heard of it. That's the giant supermarket chain that has at least one store in every town in the country, and a few outside! You keep your face as neutral as you can, though. "Big Bash? Never heard of it."
Her face visibly twitches at the outrageous lie.
Tear appears at your shoulder, "perhaps you should stop playing with the customers, Recette." She looks to the girl, "My name is Tear, pleased to make your acquaintance, Alouette."

"Hooo," Alouette smirks at Tear, "so you have a fairy helper? Perhaps you are a worthy rival after all. I, too, have a fairy. Prime!"

The little brown fairy beside her lets out a bored sigh. "Yes, Mistress?"

You zone out for a little while as she introduces the fairy, the fairy mocks Tear for a while, who gets riled at the mocking but otherwise remains civil, and the girl continues to direct insults at your store.
"...and to believe you would have such a display as your storefront!"

You cut her off: "Actually, it does need changing. I was thinking of putting some of my new stock up there. Maybe you could help me? I could really use help, I'm still new to all this. Oh, I'm Recette by the way, pleased to meet you!" You thrust out your hand, which Alouette takes gingerly after inspecting it closely as if looking for traps or tricks.

"Wh-why should I help you," Alouette asks, "for what reason would I assist my rival?"

"Well, I can't be a very good rival if I don't know what I'm doing." She ponders on your statement for a moment, face creased into a thoughtful frown.

"I suppose you have a point. Very well, I shall assist you in arranging your storefront so that you can be a better rival!"

As she helps you rearrange your store items to better look like a respectable item store, you make sure to leave the new dragon ornament out so that she might stumble across it. And when she does:

"W-wow! What it this? It's beautiful!" You find her standing before it in awe, not fully able to compute that a store like yours would have this in stock.

"Oh, that," you answer casually, "I'm not really sure what to do with it. It's an amazing piece but I don't know anyone who would really appreciate it, or afford to buy it. I doubt even your 'Big Bash' could take it."

"I- I'll have you know I could buy this right now, if I so choose!" You seem to have struck a nerve as she puffs her chest out at you again. "In fact, it's such a lovely piece that your store doesn't deserve to hold it! I shall buy it from you. What price?"

>Ask her to come back in a week

We can't put a price tag on this, we can get fucked as hard by this sale as her. We have a bare minimum prize from a glance appraisal, but no real hard facts. By delaying a week, we can incorporate multiple ideas.

1) We can pretend we've had lots of people wanting to buy it
2) We learn the real prize so we can sell it for more than it's worth

These two play nicely into stuff like >>31515192 and >>31515059

We have their definite interest in the item, by waiting we can get them anxious and desperate. Especially with "other offers being made".

She squints at you, searching your face as though looking for any tells. "Prime, fetch my money."

"Wha- but Mistress, you really shouldn't-"

"Don't question me, Prime! Go, now. I shall finalize the price before you return."

"Eeeeh. Whatever." The trashy little fairy floats her way out of the store, while Alouette stands, smiling triumphantly at you.

"Taken."

"What?"

"Taken. I'll take it now, Prime will be here with the money shortly."

She... can be this casual with that much money?? You're too stunned to react as she steps outside and snaps her fingers. A heavily built man in a fine suit (very similar in cut to some other suits you've seen recently) steps into the store, nods in your direction, then leaves with the dragon. A few moments later, Prime flutters into the store with a large briefcase. She drops the thing with a thud on your welcome mad, waves and leaves.

After a long minute, Tear manages to pull her mouth shut, approaching the suitcase carefully. She prods it, as though expecting it to explode, then flicking the latches open. Inside is one and a half million pix bills.
She nods silently to herself, locks the case again, then carries it into the back room. As she passes you, "We really should've had it appraised first. Let's just hope it turns out to be a genuine piece, or at least hope she never finds out."

Some time later, you've recovered your senses and are back behind the til. You get no real custom for the rest of the afternoon however, and soon enough dusk is setting in, bathing the store in a warm amber glow.

"He-hey Tear?" A short pause before she pushes the door open. She's wearing your cooking apron. It's comically over-sized on her, but your suppress you giggle to ask her a serious question. "You said... put a dent in it. How big is my debt, anyway?"

Her soft expression fades into a troubled one as she looks you in the eye. "Are you sure you want to know? It might not be easy to hear it out loud."

That sounds daunting, but- "Yeah, I think I need to know."

"Okay, well then. Your father originally borrowed 8,200,000pix from Mr. Terme." You blink a few times as your mind tries to take in the number.

"Eight million and... two..."

Tear averts her gaze."And that's before the interest."

There's no escaping this one way or the other. Might as well get this out in the open now.

"And how much did the interest add?"

Tear hesitates, "you know you can't un-hear what I'm about to say, right?" You gulp, nodding slowly. "As you know, your father was lynched for his debt last year. This week marks the tenth month since you accepted his debt." You nod, that's about right. "And the interest rate set by Terme Finance is 12%-"

"Well, that's not so ba-"

"per month. Which brings the total owed to," she pauses, doing some mental arithmetic, "25,467,955pix. Minus the 300 you've been earning per week for the last 43 weeks, would be 25,455,055pix left."

You're pretty sure you heard a number there somewhere. You're only pretty sure though, since your mind is currently too distracted by the way the world is spinning and the darkness is blacking out your consciousness.

Perhaps we can petition Mr. Terme for a loyalty perk, or perhaps some other jobs that would result in such things? A reduction in the interest rate would relieve a lot of the monthly debt pressure.

We got to kill the man and his organization. It would be FAR FAR more cheaper and less difficult than to pay this fucking man.

3 MIL PER MONTH? NOPE.
>>
>>31518342
then kill them too~
>>
>>31518474

I have a feeling that Mr. Terme has other plans for Recette other than making her make him money. He did spare her from the usual fate that awaited those with impossible debt, and included that clause. If we prove ourselves to be clever and valuable, he might offer us a better deal or a cushy position; with another gang moving in on his turf (which may or may not be related to Alouette moving in), there may be a lot of positions opening up soon.

Or we make enough connections to twist his arm enough so that he frees us from our debt and any other assorted obligations with his organization.
>>
>>31518595
Or he can keep us down and in consistent debt, and he can keep sucking money forever from us.

That what a business man would do.
>>
>>31518661

Either way, we're not in a position to do anything about that immediately. We need to build up connections, curry favor with the other powers in Pensee, and get a solid core of powerful adventurers who like us enough to take on a huge criminal organization. If Terme decides to cut us a break, we're free and powerful. If Terme decides to keep us down, we can make his life very interesting.
>>
>>31518726
I vote for 'Be adorable at Alouette until she'll give us enough guards to storm the city'.
>>
>>31517998
No, actually that's the amount you'd need to PAY every month. On top of that comes all other expenses, including money invested in expanding the business. Should be possible to renegotiate that interest rate, though. If Mr. Terme decided to put Recette in a position where she has this much freedom and opportunity, he surely can't intend to antagonize her in such an obvious manner. It's counterproductive because it only serves to restrict her so that she can't be as useful to him while at the same killing any reason for her to remain loyal.
>>
>>31517944
It's dark outside when you finally come to in your bed. The room is empty apart from yourself, and you're still fully clothed bar your shoes. You can hear voices downstairs, and the smell of cooked food wafts up to you.
This bed is awful comfy, though, and it's been a while since you've had a room to yourself.

You take the stairs slowly, careful not to make any noise on the creaky wooden steps. At the bottom, you can finally make out that one of the voices is Charme, the other is Tear. They appear to be arguing with each other.
"...at least have the decency to be honest as to why you're helping her. Everyone knows it would've sent a stronger message to send her off for parts like the old man usually does."

"I don't know what you're talking about. This arrangement has thus far been profitable to all parties, Mr. Terme included."

A pause. "Ah, heh. So you're in denial yourself. Well, whatever. Nothing I say will get through then. I'm out of here." The shop door slams shut, the bell tinkling as she goes. Tear lets out a sigh, before the backroom door opens and Louie's voice emerges.

"Miss Tear? There's a little food left. Want me to take it up to Recette now?"

You scamper back up the stairs and into the bedroom before Louie can turn the corner and drop into bed as he's following you up the stairs. When he opens the door, you feign waking and stretch out, yawning a greeting to him.

"Ah, good to see you awake, Recette. Here, I brought you something to eat." He hands you a plate full of something grey that you guess once used to be the fresh chicken you had Louie pick up from the market the other morning. It's also been served with some black things that may once have been potatoes, and a green mush whose origins you don't even want to guess at.

"Is this..."

"Yeah, Tear's cooking. It tastes better than it looks. Honest." He smiles, sitting down on the bed beside you.

"Okay, I'll try it. Thank her for me!" You take the plate from him and start to attack the grey lumps, sawing at them in the hopes of breaking them down into bite-sized chunks. It's hard going.

Louie smiles again, "you got it." He starts to push himself up off the bed before stopping himself and turning back to you. "Hey, Recette. I heard about the whole millions of pix of debt thing. I'm, uh, well I can't really know how it feels to be in debt, but I know what it's like to have nothing. Just, well, if you need someone to talk to, I'm here. And you've been good to me, so I want you to know I've got your back. We can get through this thing together, right? Especially if we keep getting lucky like today! You'll be debt free in no time!"

"Yeah, thanks Louie," you beam your heartfelt gratitude at him, "I'll remember it." He sits awkwardly on the edge of the bed, eyes locked with yours for a long moment before suddenly remembering himself.

He shoots upright and makes for the door. "Right, yeah, well I'll go tell Tear and stuff."

"Louie," you call out just before he passes through the door. He looks back over his shoulder, "If this isn't as good as you promised..." You lift the forkful of grey matter to your lips, using your tongue to guide it into your mouth. As you chew on the mass, you pull a face to show your distaste, but still making the effort to swallow the load.
"...I guess I'll just have to eat you instead." You fix him with a seductive gaze.

"Alright, well I'm sure I can find you something else to satisfy you."

"Yeah, I'd definitely like a creamy desert."

He nods once, then apparently clocks to what you just said. "Ah-aba ah..." His face quickly goes scarlet, his mouth working but no further sound coming out, before he spins on the spot and flees through the door. You pout, then shrug and start chewing your way through the 'meal' before you.

You sit contentedly, waiting for Tear to notice you. You've managed to finish the entire cup before she blinks a few times, finally registering your presence. "Ah, Recette. You're awake? I didn't think you'd be up until morning with how soundly you were sleeping. Did you need something?"

"Yeah, sort of. Hey Tear, what exactly did Papa do? To get this much debt, I mean. Does Terme usually lend out that much money?"

Tear seems somewhat flustered at the question. "Ah, well you see, I'm not really sure how much I'm allowed to tell you just yet. Though I'm sure you'll find out yourself, given enough time. She chuckles at the question. "I could ask you the same. What's it like being a big person?"

"Well yeah, but you're different to the norm around here. I mean, where do you get your clothes tailored?"

"The same places as you. Clothing merchants in these parts provide for those of my stature. There are few of us, but we have discerning tastes and often come with a full coin purse, what with our standard lines of work."

"Oh," you intone. "How do you fly when your wings don't seem to be attached to your body?"

She smirks at you. "Magic. What, you expected a different answer?"

"Not really. How do fairies get work in human cities?"

"We have fairy networks, spread out throughout the human realms. We can stay in contact with each other and let our fellows know of openings when they become available. Not much different to how you'd find work by asking your fellow humans, really."

You can see her drifting off into deep thought again, answering your simple questions almost on autopilot. You choose this moment to strike the hammer blow. "So why was Papa special?"

And that's it for this evening, folks!

I hope you all enjoyed this as much as I did. Thanks for participating, and thanks for being such a good crowd as always.

I'll be lingering for a short while if I'm wanted, but otherwise I hope to see you all next week!

Aside from the canon characters (i.e. Louie, Charme, Alouette), will there be other significant Named characters in the quest?
>>
>>31522667
thanks for running kaelun. Will we have a chance to make up with Charme? She seemed pretty pissed at Tear
>>
>>31522700
Named characters? Potentially. Significant? Not so much.

>>31522817
You'll have to tune in next week to find out!

Good thread. Thanks.

So how much of this money is gonna be used for store redocorating?
>>
>>31523405
I hope we at least funnel SOME of that cash into the shop.
I mean, our current short term goal should be to increase our monthly profit, not paying off the debt.
I'm sure Mr. Terme also understands this, since he is a businessman. Don't eat the goose laying the golden eggs, breed more geese instead.

Wait, I just realized.. The debt must have been frozen once it fell to Recette since no more interest was added after that.
43 weeks is almost an entire year, yet there was no interest for that time.
Making a few assumptions, mostly for ease of calculation (1 month = 30 days, money is paid off before interest is added, and each month the debt is rounded off upwards to the nearest whole pix), the total debt should have been 79,076,025pix, if my math is correct.

Goddamn Mr. Terme is really going easy on her.

It sounds like her father was a talented and loyal agent. He may have lost his temper and then later regretted ruining such an asset?

If that's true, that really means a lot. If Recette can pay off a debt like that, there's probably a very profitable relationship awaiting both of them.

Yeah, I'm starting to believe that it is more a matter of saving face than actually getting the money back.
The debt is too big to just kill everyone who could repay it and send them to the "human chop shop", but on the other hand he doesn't seem to be interested in bleeding Recette for every little penny she can scrape together either.
She's been given a surprising amount of freedom for what is basically an indentured servant. The only real limit to her freedom is A. she can't just up and leave, and B. Tear is there to make sure that she makes more money than last week.
He even provided her with the shop and a skilled accountant/manager. Not something you'd do for a regular debtor.

I think the debt is actually more like an excuse to mold her into the ultimate capitalist-loli so that she'll be all but printing money by the time she's an adult and she'll be so well intergrated into Terme Finance by that time that she won't have any reason to leave.

>I'd prefer to eat you.
Really, OP? You might be comfortable writing THAT option, but it won't end there. The players will take it as an implication that you're willing to go a lot further.
Be careful.
>>
>>31524509
Considering that she gets Arma and Griff on her side, I would say that Terme is a very shrewd man.
>>
>>31526150
Obviously. He wouldn't be in charge of a company that can lend a few million pix to a single person if he wasn't.
The question is just on how many levels?
>>
>>31524509
Honestly I am starting to think it is a dual thing
He is looking after recite for her father in respect for the work he did for them
And he wants Recette to become a trusted agent who can earn the money they need and handle all kinds of jobs while being unsuspected because of her appearance / reputation. Possibly even leading up to right hand or successor type roles

>>31524223
Probably more he had to kill him to save face but he made sure his daughter had a chance.che probably didn't want to kill him in the first place if the guy was such a good agent but sometimes you need to send a message or your workers and rivals think you are going soft
