You are John James Green, mutant vagrant.

You dream. Somebody shouts and gestures. You feel your skin burst with ravenous heat. Black spots, sun spots, clawing in your vision. Rattles, rattles. You lift them up and sink your teeth in, the heat of your tongue fusing their bones together, cooking them in their own fat. The blood bubbles against your gums and you smell it all.

You awaken by the side of the platform, body plastered with sweat. Light pours in from the stairs, cold and clear, and you hear birds conversing outside. Layla snores nearby, and Lucas, too. And Noriko, and Kevin, and Gaby. Laura is silent, but you feel the warmth pulsing off her body.

Rubbing sleep from your eyes, you pull yourself up, thinking back. You went out to eat with Laura last night, spent some of her money (can’t believe you’re more broke than she is now). Eventually she had to go to work, but not before she received an enthused text from Chat, listing an address and a time suited to the girl’s employer. You’ve got it written down somewhere, you think, on a napkin or something.

Your stomach grumbles. Damn. How’re you still hungry? You ate just last night!

Hunt down some birds. We are eating hobo style this morning. Also we don't want to be late for work. Check someones phone for time.
Also look for metal pipes, if we have the time. Teach the electrical's to channel electricity.

Probably going to be the consensus.

Lets throw waking someone up in with that, don't want to go wandering off alone again. Laura would be best if she has had enough sleep.

concerning the other still haven't options:
We should probably nip the vampire problem in the bud before we go see the corsairs.
>>

>>
>>31521543
Could we leave a note?

Less hassle.
>>
>[X] Check the time/address for your appointment.
>[X] Eat.
>[X] Hellions.

Lurching groggily toward the bag of groceries slumped over by the stairs, you forage through your pockets for the note. Turns out it was on the back of one of those little flier things they sometimes hand out. The address isn’t familiar to you, but you know the general area, so you’ll have to feel your way from there. As for the time, they want you to drop by at 14:30.

Guess you should head out to see the Hellions too. Those guys.

You paw through the bag, scrutinizing its contents. Bananas, no. Why do you even have those? Candy, no. Potato chips, no. A small surge of victory flooding through you, you withdraw a packet of lamb chops, tearing open the container. You bite into the raw meat, teeth working greedily, the smell flooding your nostrils.

Then you realize what you’re doing.

You spit out a mouthful of tangled meat, but most if it’s already down your throat. The taste lingers in your mouth, like a note dragged on far too long, or not long enough, promising, urging, coaxing…

It tasted good. It made your chest burst with heat, heart applauding frantically. You stare down at the bloody meat in your hands, repulsed, hungry, disgusted, wanting, wanting to eat. You try to forget the allure of that coppery, crimson-soaking taste, and set it down. People don’t eat raw food. You’re a person.

Shuffling over to Laura, you kneel down, gently shaking at her shoulder. She awakens slowly and purposefully, eyes creaking open, forming a bleary, silent question. She sniffs at the air and glances at your hands. You ignore it.

“Hey. I’m heading out to see the Hellions quickly. You want to come along?”

She nods drowsily and pulls herself up. The two of you cook a quick breakfast, eating quietly so as to not disturb the others. Then you set out through the scar.

You take a slight detour, one of your usual byways through the desolation closed off by an awful, awful scent – like rotting meat swilling in milk, in pus, in everything you don’t want to ever taste. Can’t say that it doesn’t make you wonder, but the smell is too bad for you to stomach getting closer. On your way past an old, scorched playground you see a wiry young man crouched behind the seesaw, breathing heavily. He nods at you, and you realize that he’s covered in thin, spiny needles. You nod back.

Stranger and stranger…

It takes you a little under an hour to find your way into the urban nightmare that is the Groves. With your hood up and your head low, you look like every other two-bit, greasy kid trudging through the early-morning grey of the estate. You forgot the smell of this place, forgot how it seems to be constantly tumbling, constantly aching to die, to be euthanized. Old drains and vomit and cigarette smoke. Trash that never seems to get collected, that just stews out in the cold, in the heat, in whatever weather. It must be like hell in summer.

Then again, you doubt summertime in the scar will be particularly easy on the nose.

As you approach the door, Laura pauses, as if remembering something, and asks if it’s entirely wise to just turn up. You turn her question over in your head.

You guess she’s right. You don’t entirely enjoy the idea of just walking in on Julian and all his friends. You have no idea how many mutants he has running around doing… whatever the hell it is they do… and you’re not sure you ever want to find out.

“Yeah…” You scratch the back of your neck. Scales are a bit itchy today. “I guess we should call? Maybe meet somewhere a little less…”

You grasp for the word. Flies swirl over a nearby heap of trash, their monotonous buzzing punctuated by a parent arguing with his son a flight or two upstairs.

“…depressing?”

Laura nods, withdrawing her phone. The ensuing conversation is short and to-the-point, pretty much as expected, though you’re a little surprised when Laura pauses briefly to apologize for something. She folds the cell away and glances up at you.

“Julian will meet us at a café east of here. We’ve used it before.”

You follow Laura to the meeting point, this tiny grotto doused in the scent of burnt coffee, taking a seat outside. The morning is picking up around you, the occasional commuter stopping by for a hot drink and something vaguely recognizable as breakfast. Eventually, you smell the dark, slick scent of too much hair gel, followed closely by the musk of leather, and turn to see Julian crossing the road towards you. He’s alone.

“Hey there, mystery guy.”

He smirks it out.

“How’ve you been?” You ask, a guarded tone in your voice. You can’t help it. You’re not 100% sure what this guy can do, but you remember that it seemed pretty powerful.

“Me?” He smiles that superior smile. “I’ve been alright. Hey, Olivia!” He calls out into the drab innards of the café, where a small, mousey-looking girl looks up from behind the counter, beaming at him like he’s made of gold or something. “The usual, please.”

She nods, and he sits down, lounging back in his seat.

“Good.” You say. You’re not sure what else to say. “Anyway… here’s the information I promised.”

Laura slides the address over on the back of a napkin. He glances down at it, brow arching lazily over two eyefuls of teenaged arrogance.

“I kinda assumed we’d be having this conversation a little earlier. Me an’ the boys have been shaking down anyone so much as associated with Jack for a week now.”

“Things happened.”

“What, exactly?” He leans in, still smirking. “She”– He nods briefly toward Laura, who, thankfully, is unfazed by his lack of decorum –“told me about that much for going on a week now. What happened, really?”

“I got caught by someone I didn’t want to be caught by.” Best to keep it vague for now.

He raises a curious eyebrow. “Creeper?”

You shake your head. “No. It doesn’t matter who, really. I doubt they have much interest in you.”

“Oh?” He leans back, and slides easily into a charming, good-natured smile as the girl drops by with his coffee. He winks at her as she heads back in, eliciting an honestly very annoying amount of blushing, before turning back to you, his eyes scraping at your shades, looking for some tell in your expression. “Why, exactly, are you so interesting, then? What makes you so special?”

Something small and delicate bends the wrong way in the back of your skull, and you almost hiss. What is he, jealous? Is he just playing with you? You never asked for this. You never asked for all these people in your life, prodding and poking at you. Creeper, Joseph, Barracuda… you wish they’d just leave you the hell alone.

“…I don’t know.” You answer, grimacing a little.

He shrugs, and grins smugly. “Yeah, me neither.”

Oh, you asshole.

“Well…” Pausing to take a sip, he glances back down at the address. “…How do you want to play this? Are you still doing all hands off, or are you looking to jump this place yourself?”

Part of you – a big part of you – wants to just dump it all on the Hellions. Just leave it in their possibly capable hands and get out of the blast zone. But, somehow, you can’t shake this feeling of… responsibility… for the whole mess. It’s your fight. It’s your problem. You wish he wasn’t, but Creeper… you can’t help but feel that Creeper is somehow yours. Your demon. And you need to know that he’s hurt, or know that he’s dead, or at least know that that you don’t have to be looking over your shoulder for him anymore.

“…I want”– Need. Need. –“to at least know that you’re doing some damage. I can duck in and out before you drop your human earthquake guy on the place.”

“Hah!” Still smirking, he stows the napkin away. Without touching it. It just flutters through the air into his jacket. Right. “Timeframe? We should probably plan around your busy schedule of being captured by bad people and… doing whatever it is you do when that’s not happening.”

He didn’t say it, but you know he was thinking ‘dumpster diving’. You can see it all over his face. He’s not even hiding it, really.

>[X] Tomorrow, 11PM.

You’d do it now if you could. But you don’t want to disappoint Chat’s friends/co-workers/whatever – especially after you broke her ankle in your first fit of retard strength.

“Tomorrow.” You decide. “Eleven PM. Scope the place out and I’ll meet you nearby.”

Julian takes a long, thoughtful sip of his coffee.

“How will you find us?” He asks, eventually.

You tap your nose, and this time it’s your turn to grin very slightly. He chuckles.

“Alright, then. Be there on time. By twelve the place will be a crater, whether or not you show up.”

Kinda interesting choice of words, there. You can’t help but wonder if he’s being literal. Alvers seemed like he could take down a house or two, but you’d think that his power would just leave lots of rubble, not an actual crater. The big guy, maybe? Santo? He seemed tough and ugly enough to throw down some serious mutant hurt.

Well, it’s either him or someone you haven’t met yet. That Tabitha chick’s power, if you recall correctly, was getting stoned off her head and vomiting on people.

Eh, not really. But let's ask Peter. He knows about where to get scientists' papers and theses and that sort of thing, so he might be a science guy.

Or he might know a science guy.
>>
>>31524502
Were using a vast amount of energy every time we make and dissolve our wings.

An increase in appetite is normal, and our senses being able to discern good food has probably lead to the meat focus.

Frankly so long as it dosen't escalate it wont be a problem.

However we can head any possible problems off with photosynthesis.

Sliding your chair out, you lift yourself up. Before you go, a thought strikes you, and you glance back down at Julian.

“By the by, someone new has stepped in on Creeper’s Jack game. Thought you’d want to know.”

“I do know.” Says Julian, eyeing you somewhat critically, as though you’ve insulted him in some small way. “We think it’s the Russians. Everyone knows that that Chameleon guy – you know, the one that tangles with Spider-Man? – everyone knows he runs the Bratva here in New York. Word is, though, that something’s come up, and some horrible big-time bitch from Russia is coming in to town to make sure he handles it right.”

That doesn’t sound good. You can almost hear those big, greedy, bloody hands reaching out through the veins of New York, digging their lines in the sand.

“Christ, this kind of shit is never good.” You shiver as the cold washes over you. “Last time things felt like this, it ended badly. Like, beheadings badly.”

You can’t help but feel a trace of adrenaline race through you as you think back to the early days of Creeper’s ascension. The blood, the terror, the gnawing, gut-curdling unknown of it all – it was almost romantic, back then. Hindsight, of course, is 20/20, and real life is no longer a gangster movie for you.

>(2/2)

Julian raises an eyebrow, and for a moment his stare is a little different, almost impressed. He’s back to normal soon enough, of course.

“No shit.” He knocks back the last of his coffee. “Last few days have felt like 1914. A bunch of Tombstone’s boys turned up with – I shit you not – their lungs pulled out through their backs, just a day or two ago. Sooner or later, someone’s gonna set off the wrong spark, and all the knives are coming out.”

You sigh. Not again. Not this again. It sounds worse than before, and you’re in the middle of it all.

“Oh, yeah…” This is gonna sound so weird. “…None of your guys’ve been attacked by a vampire, right?”

He stares blankly at you.

“No. Why the hell would you ever ask that?”

“It’s nothing…” You shrug. “Just some stuff going on in the sca– the Exclusion Zone. Anyhow, I’ll be seeing you.”

“Hope so.”

We couldn't take our family with us. Not even Laura. So that's currently not a good enough reason for the character (JJ) to do so.

We totally should, though (it doesn't mean it will be better elsewhere, though, the Scar has been ambivalent to us).

Mine (not in any order): Subdermal 2, Shadow Field, Wings 2, Claws 2, Photosynthesis 1, etc. etc.

I kind of want the animal affinity so we don't have to constantly check out things ourselves, allowing us to multitask.

For example this vampire thing. With AA lvl2 we could ask rats, squirrels and other small landbound animals to keep an eye for the scent we describe to them.

>[X] Contact Victoria.

“Hey…” All that talk of gangs and drugs and other bad things got you thinking.

Laura turns her eyes up toward you, a questioning forming in her eyes.

“I was just thinking, I never thanked Victoria.” You explain. “She said she helped you, right?”

She nods.

“And you didn’t have to pull her leg or anything?” This is Victoria, after all.

Another nod.

“Huh.” Your last encounter with her was… confusing. Truth be told, almost all your encounters with her were confusing. You guess, though, there’s some genuine part of her that she bared to you, at some point, and that kind of closeness doesn’t just fade away. “…Would you mind giving her a call? I just want to say thanks.”

Laura blinks a little uncertainly, and reaches for her phone. After a second or two she hands it over to you, the other end of the line already ringing.

And ringing. And ringing. And –

Loud music hits you through the receiver. Heavy bass, swirling in the air, just minutely muted by some manner of intervening architecture. You hear voices, heavy, deep, tweedy, squawking. And then one irritable voice cuts through them all:

“What did I tell you?” It asks. “You can’t just phone me whenever you like. I’m”–

“It’s me, Vicky.”
>>
>>31525556
JJ is bullseye now, give him a deck of cards and he can flick cards with high enough speed and precision to cut your throat.
>>
>>31525605
Or we could get a pistol for free.

Much easier to carry 10 shots than 10 rocks, and much faster to use.
>>
Btw, something I've been thinking about. Creeper's presentation here was initially of someone who took pride in being a mutant, but went darker as they got more power. JJ seeing Creeper's face as he did drugs shows that Creeper has some understanding of how he's in too deep.

Secondly, Creeper's choice of jobs for JJ shows he goes very much high-risk, high-reward, but generally ignores (or doesn't want to think about) the INSANELY dangerous things that he's overseeing.

When we finally meet/fight/whatever Creeper, I don't think it's a good idea to kill him, because combined with JJ's difficulty with his animalistic nature, Creeper is ultimately a being that doesn't deserve murder. And killing him might set JJ down a very dark path.
>>
>(2/2)

The voice falters into the background, the thrum of the bass scooping it up, folding it away.

“…Oh my God… Jo”– She presses her phone against her shoulder. You think you can hear her pulse, even over the line. –“One moment, I’ve got to take this…” The music fades, the voices trailing away. Slowly, you hear her steps click-clack out onto pavement. “…John? You’re alive?”

“Yep. I just”–

“Jesus Christ, John! Are you still in the city? I told you to get out. Told you someone would”–

“Someone did.” You cut in. “But it wasn’t anyone to do with Creeper. Would’ve happened either way, I think. Look, I just phoned to say thanks. It was good of you to help Laura. Means a lot to me.”

For a moment you just hear her breathing in and out. Then,

“It was nothing. Don’t worry about it. I assume you’re staying?”

“Looks that way.”

She sighs lengthily.

JJ is 'I can't believe it's not Bullseye', to be fair. Honestly, I don't know why everyone is this interested in killing people. Taser-hands is an easy knock-out, Taser 2 more-so. It's also quiet, which is nice for a stealth build (notice how all of the sup/tg/ tags for the quest have stealth?).

“Um…” Suddenly you’re not really too sure what to say anymore. “Well, I kinda have to go. But keep your head down, would you? This whole situation with Creeper’s territory sounds like it’s gonna get gnarly.”

“What do you suggest, exactly? That I run off with you?”

“You could hang out here for a while…” You answer, a little tentatively.

“That’s… sweet… I guess… but no thanks.” She chuckles a little. Syllables like silk. You forgot how great her laugh was. “I haven’t woken up smelling like trash in years. I’d like to keep it that way.”

“If you say so. Stay safe.”

“You too.”

She drops the line. You hand Laura back her phone and just think for a moment.

You really need to get a new phone.

Taking a short detour into one of the main streets, you borrow a few dollars from Laura, managing to get yourself a nice cheap cell. Promising to pay Laura back, you head back to the scar. It hasn’t snowed since Christmas, you think, but the scar doesn’t get swept, and it still lies in thick, brilliant white heaps. Smiling almost reflexively, you consider the old winters, the old Christmases, back when you used to run down hills and scream, and throw scalding handfuls of nearly-ice, and build snowmen.

And you stop in your tracks.

Laura continues a few paces ahead, her footsteps whispering against the snow, before she realizes that you’ve stopped. Turning back, she stares at you, her eyes silently inquiring.

Why not? Why not? You’ve got the snow. You’ve got the cold. You’ve got the gloves and the big coat and it’s sort of still vaguely Christmastime. This is something people do, out there in the real world. Outside of… mutant town, or gangster town, or whatevertown. This is actual reality.

“Do you want to build a snowman?” You ask.

She stares, unblinking. After a moment or two, she glances from left to right, as if surveying the area, and turns back to you.

“Okay.”

And so, the two of you build a snowman.

Sure there have been.

But we have much better weapons available to us, and ones that we can actually keep hidden on our person.
>>

right. and those 6 other people still won't be able to photosynthesize, and will still need to eat.
So... do we buy food for 7, and not get killed, or buy food for 6 and sunbathe?
Seems pretty fucking obvious really.

Buy food for 7, of course.

when you live in new york, it is impossible to run out of good-sized hard objects to throw.
you don't have to carry them around, they're all around you.
you don't make the bang bang noise, you don't need to carry anything, it doesn't matter if it gets wet, you don't run out of ammo etc.
I'm glad you like guns, really, I am, but theres no good reason to bother.
>>
>>31527169
People kill each other with rocks on a regular basis. Pitchers can kill people on 1 hit with a baseball, rock would do even more damage.

Please faggot, Laura can cut us some knives out of half the shit in the scar. And half the fucks we deal with are carrying around guns. There's more opportunity for a useful weapon than there is of finding a good killing rock just randomly lying 5 ft from us.
>>
I love how Laura is experiencing things that were missing from her childhood.
>>
I think we need to get gabby a longer coat or grab some modified leg warmers so her tail isn't exposed to the elements

We're arguing about ranged weapons to use with geointuitive vision. Melee isn't really a concern.
>>
>>31528009
We would need to spend a long while training to use said weapon. Throwing a knife is difficult, and a great brain doesn't mean we can suddenly do it.
>>
>>31527952
The only thing I want is a decent ranged weapon. A rock, while easy to find has less damage potential than a gun or knife, plus we'd have to spend an action to find said rock in the first place.
>>31528069
We just bought geointutive vision.
JJ can throw a knife.

A hobo carrying around a bunch of rocks isn't suspicious?

Those are practically pebbles, we wont kill anything larger than a housecat with those.
>>
>>31528204
We could just get slingshot ammo or marbles.
>>
>>31528009
Spend your time thinking about why JJ would do this, while reading the threads for reference.

JJ isn't Gambit, Daredevil, or Bullseye just because his body can maybe do something.

This is just like people suggesting we use DB to light fires to overcome our phobia, because people just assume they can do something with no justification for the character doing so.

Why do we need to kill a bunch of people, anon?
>>
Should we check out the rest of the sewer?
>>
>>31528292
You know the one with the brotherhood insignia inside it.
>>
>>31528222
Are we still killing house cats?
>>31528237
A gun/knife/sword isn't used for taking lives, anon. It's supposed to be used to defend them.

A useful ranged weapon for when we need it as opposed to wasting time while getting shot at to find a five pound rock is all I'm arguing for.
>>
>>31528237
>use DB to light fires to overcome our phobia

wanting to overcome your fears is bad?

and JJ isn't a coward
>>
>>31528292
Laura already checked it so it's not an immediate concern. Sure he might find something cool but with His enhanced senses I can't imagine it would be pleasant.
>>
>>31528386
its like you don't remember the super strength

1-2 tons
can do 3 but JJ will throw out his back
>>
>>31528399
True. However JJ would get the same amount of Phobia Remission from successfully using a Bic lighter as he would from DB. Which of those options could go more catastrophically wrong?
>>
>>31528386
>gun/knife/sword
>weapons
>things designed for killing other things
>not for taking lives
What.
>>
>>31528488
I haven't forgotten it, but there's a lot more to throwing power than strength. We're eight times the strength of the average person, can we throw eight times as fast?

>I like how you imply that I don't remember super strength when I've been advocating a throwing weapon.

>>31528547
>Obvious Brit.
Yep, gun's are designed to take lives, the point is that you're supposed to use them when the only choice remaining is you or them.
>>
>>31528465
JJ and her stopped the moment we saw the magneto helmet graffiti. So we should check it out again. If we find a safe place in the sewers we'll have a place to fallback to if anything bad, like MC, goes down in the scar.
>>
>>31528122
>spend an action
this isn't dnd you realize. however much happens in a post is however much happens in a post. there isn't a 'turn structure'
>>
>>31528523
I really wish you would just come and say you want DB to atrophy.

and bic lighters won't count towards the fire checks. Crusty ain't rewarding JJ cuz he flick a bic

In a fight we usually only get to do one thing at a time. That one thing could be firing or throwing a readied weapon or finding a rock.

>>31528603
Scratch her just jj stopped. I just fell it be a good idea to form a escape route if things go bad.

Or that one thing could be drawing our gun and turning the safety off.
you're making a huge, unfounded assumption about how much CJ will let us do in a single "action"as you call it. I'm pretty sure he'd let us grab something and throw as 1 action because, well, this is a comic book, and thats how comic book fights go.
>>
>>31528824
We have enhanced agility 2 and enhanced senses 5.
JJ is beyond quickdraw.
Handy little features, them safeties. You can press it with the thumb or forefinger on either side of a standard semi automatic pistol. Or you could have a revolver with a 5 pound trigger pull and no safety.

Wouldn't recommend the second one for JJ, but he shouldn't be idley fingering the trigger anyways.

>Being this much of a stubborn faggot about muh rocks.

Actually, immpretty sure Crusty came out and said such behaviors as successfully lighting our camp stove with a lighter would help reduce our phobia.

And for your information I love Murder Breath. It's about time JJ took the gloves off and got his hands dirty. I'd just rather drop the DC down to 16-17 before we try using it in combat or diplomacy.

But better than rocks.
More concealable, more damaging, benefits from super strength, and we don't need to worry about missing.
>>
>>31529460
I've got an idea.

We have super strength.

Why don't we give Layla a knife, and throw LAYLA?
>>
>>31529498
Fuck it, we'll just throw Laura. That way we can skip the obtaining a knife part.
>>
>>31529524
We'll never need ammo again.
>>
>>31529539
infinite fast ball special...

ITS GENIUS!!!
>>
>>31529592
But you'll have to abuse Layla to get more clones, so actually we do need the rocks.
>>
>>31529610
we could beat her with a sack of Valencia oranges, that we grew with green finger (a man can dream). teaches her who's boss, more clones, and doesn't leave a bruise
>>
>>31529656
