You hear some kind of commotion outside, so you excuse yourself to go out onto the nearest balcony and have a look. Blood acolytes, Charioteers, and Footmen are all scrambling into their various formations. The Blood Priest stands behind Kullaa. All of this is in response to a procession of men and monsters proceeding up the broad plaza of bricks laid out in front of the palace gates. Leading them is a very familiar lizard-creature wielding two spiked glaives. His scales are thicker than before and reach further up his human torso than before. Scars zigzag across his skin. "Greetings, o great priest of Ligish!" he shouts. "We come in peace. We would like to negotiate a certain... exchange..."

Your blood runs cold. You know that this lizard-man will never forgive you for killing his wife, and the centipede-boy who presumably commands him from Turtak wants you as the centerpiece of his harem. And with your shell still not yet hardened after your molting, you're all but defenseless. You'd give anything to be anyone but yourself right now.

You are Nakurtum. You weren't invited to the blessing for the city, so you're in your room in the great pyramid, sharpening one of your four distinctly different greataxes. You wonder whether you should go see how the Adventurers' School is going. Ninlil is busy having etiquette lessons forced upon her by Tabni-Ninsun and her eunuchs, so you have little else to do. You wonder if you should get a pet of your own. Not a scorpion, but something better then all these idiots who serve Ligish's priestly caste.

Suddenly, you hear Dadanum running around spreading the news to all the guards. Some monsters from Turtak have shown up in the city, and they're trying to convince the Blood Priest to hand someone over to them!

"They take Zuu over my dead body." You crack the knuckles on your shiny red blood-conjured arm.

"They say they just want to talk to Hunzuu. The one they want is Iltani."

You pull on your best bronze armor, a breastplate covered in scratches and overlapping scales for your arms and legs. With your newly sharpened greataxe in both hands, you storm through the pyramid looking for Iltani, terrifying as servant or two as you pass.

Iltani's not in her room. Shit. Fuck. There's hardly anything in her room, in fact. That gives you an idea.

Sure enough, you find her in Rabi-Tammuz's workship, describing the new dress she wants him to make for her. Meluku is tugging on Iltani's skirt and asking her questions. "Hey, is it true that you kidnapped and killed all those people? Nergal-Edir says you almost started a war. That's pretty cool. Can you teach me to kill people and start wars and stuff?"

"Iltani," you say as you lower your greataxe and put a hand on her shoulder. "There's trouble. People are after you. Go hide in the catacombs until I say otherwise."

Iltani shrinks from your touch. "Eww! Excuse me? I'm not going back down there, never again! I was good, and I'm free now! And if you have a problem with that, I'd be happy to show this stupid gray kid what I can do to you!"

> Whatever. She was warned. It'll be good riddance if they take her.

"Are you simple? It doesn't matter where you hide; just hide!" Your turn from her and roll your eyes.

"I don't like you," Iltani says as she gestures for Rabi-Tammuz to roll up his bolts of cloth and put them away. There's only one cloth he doesn't touch, one that's hanging over a big pile of something in a far corner of the room.

"I can't say I like you either. I have no idea what she sees in you, but I'm doing this as a favor to her. Hide. If they tell you to come with them, don't."

As you storm out of the room, Meluku peeks his head out the door. "How about you? Can you teach me to fight?"

"You're too young, kid. Go get some sun; your skin looks bad."

You run up to Tabni-Ninsin's chambers near the top of the pyramid. You bust open the door and barge in on Ninlil's lesson. "You. Come with me. Something's about to go down."

"oh, hi, nakurtum. what's the matter?"

"No time to explain! Come on, now!" You tug at her arm until she rises from her reclining position and starts following you. "In fact, no time for those fucking stairs! Come on, let's do that thing you did that one time."

You lead Ninlil out onto the terrace and leap onto her back. She hops onto one of the two high stone ramps flanking the great stairs that lead from the ground level all the way up to the priests' solar. The two of you slide all the way down the pyramid.

Outside the gates, a group of centaurs and a red giant are escorting some blood acolytes back to the pyramid. This looks bad. "Let us in! All of us," says a centaur. "Your masters want the woman Iltani to be brought forth."

"Fuck off. Ninlil, take us over."

You kick Ninlil's flank lightly and hold onto her waist. She climbs up to one of the guard platforms and leaps over the gates. Ninlil is a lot more easygoing about being ridden than Zuu used to be.

Both of you know the way to the palace, so you just explain the situation to Ninlil as she gallops through the streets on her oversized paws.

A crowd ov people slows Ninlil down as she approaches the great brick plaza outside the palace. The Gold Priest appears to have just finished inspecting the contents of a large sack. The other priests and a mixed company of guards and soldiers face the lizard-man and his other monsters in a tense standoff.

"They're real,"The Gold Priest says. "A tempting offer. I say we take it."

The lizard-man nods and grins. "By all means, take your time! I'd be interested in hearing what the Savoir of the City has to say about this. Tell me, where is she?"

The Blood Priest steps forward. "She has nothing to say to you."

The lizard-man raises one of his two glaives. "Did she tel you that herself? You need not continue the lie. She makes the decisions around here. Ligish is no longer a city of men."

You whisper some orders to Ninlil, and the nods before shouting out to everyone. "STOP!!!"

The weaker-willed people who can hear here freeze in place, terrified. The lizard-man and some of the king's soldiers just look back at you in surprise.

You enter the plaza. "Hunzuu is away. You can't talk her. And Ubar-Sin, whatever they're offering you, don't take it!"

The Blood Priest snarls and points at you. "This is none of your affair servant. I bought you with blood and sorcery. Until your indenture is up, I command you, not the other way around."

Out of the corner of your eye, you see Hunzuu looking out from a distant balcony of the palace. She is not always the sneaky scorpion she wishes to be.

in a world where magic and gods exist

the simplest explanation for a little girl having super strength is because she carries a piece of an ancient monster long since defeated
and not more magic

You spur Ninlil into action. Ninlil roars out anything she things will help as you swing your greataxe to intercept the lizard-man. "STOP! DON'T HURT THE PRIESTS! STAND BACK!"

Ninlil cows many of the centaurs with the power of her voice, but not their leader. Your greataxe digs into the lizard's scaly flank, right between the plates of his spiked barding. You draw blood. You're very good.

The lizard flinches and hisses in pain before turning to face you. "You want to go first, woman? Gladly! Hunzuu is so dear to you? Maybe you're dear to her, too!" Only someone with supernatural strength and skill could use two glaives like that, and he's using them to toy with you, advancing on you slowly as he swings for your hands and your weapon's shaft. He's trying to disarm you. The Blood Priest pulls out a small sealed jar of blood from his sleeve and uses it to conjure a swarm of red insects that are soon swarming and stinging at the lizard's face.

In between her commanding roars, Ninlil lets out little squeaks of fear as she tries to swipe at the lizard with her claws in between strokes of his serrated blades. You've dealt with spooked mounts before, though. You know how to make them behave. You score another telling blow with your long-hafted weapon, cracking his helmet and rattling his head. He reels backwards and snarls.

Both sides join the fray. Centaurs and spearmen crash into each other. The Blood Priest seizes a pyramid guard and draws a knife, preparing to perform who-knows-what foul blood magic.

Ninlil doesn't notice a centaur some at her with a spear. You kick her and try to get her attention. "Ninlil! NINLIL!"

The centaur sinks his weapon into her side, and she collapses with a roar that hurts your ears. You roll and avoid the worst of the impact. You see the lizard-taur slowly advancing on you swatting aside friend and foe alike with his two weapons.

"Ninlil!" You cry out and charge the centaur who ran Ninlil through. He tries to turn around and withdraw, but another passing centaur cuts him off. You bring your greataxe over your had and just about bisect him. Warm blood coats your armor. The mere sight of you is enough to make a couple other centaurs shy away from Ninlil and find better targets.

The lizard-taur is not deterred, of course. He advances, slowly but implacably, cutting a bloody swath through a small unit of guards standing between you and him. You can't help but admire the way he makes his awkward weapons seem weightless.

When he's almost in reach of you, you see that Hunzuu is crying out from the balcony and weeping for you."No! Stop! I'm the one you want! Leave my friends alone!' The lizard-taur doesn't even seem to hear her over the sounds of combat.

You know Hunzuu means well, but you can't let this monster know where she is. You have to protect her. She's all you have.

The lizard respects your skill now. He doesn't blindly charge you, instead leading with his right glaive and forcing you to react before following up with his left. You show him how fast your hulking weapon can be in your hands as you feint and duck and occasionally slash at his forelegs. His leg joints aren't barded like the rest of him, and you easily draw more blood with a few glancing blows.

You hardly seem any closer to killing him, and he has the luxury of allowing you to hit him now and then without dying. When you think he's about to bring both glaives down on your head, he instead swats at you with a clawed foreleg.

You leap backwards just in time, allowing the long claws to merely scratch your armor. The lizard keeps advancing, trampling over Ninlil's whimpering agonized body to get to you. "Where is she?! Where is Hunzuu?! She should be here by now!" He pauses to chop a blood acolyte in half while her back is turned. "I had planned for battle, but I had not planned on her being a coward!" I will show her your head! I will show her the heads of everyone she loves!"

A giant harpoon of hardened blood flies across the field and pierces the lizard's side, making him roar in pain and rage. The Blood Priest appears to be helping you.

> "Why should I tell you? What's in it for me?"
> "You don't want it this way. You want to face her one-on-one, don't you? Run, and she'll meet you in a week at the ford of the river. Alone."

"You've killed enough already." You wind up your axe to one side and make a mighty swing at his human torso. It bends and cuts into his bronze armor, and he catches it under his arm and holds it there. He drops one glaive and grapples you, pulling you in little by little to saw through your breastplate with the wicked teeth of his other glaive.

> You have 1 wound. Though you're a heroic human, you're still merely human, and one more wound has a good chance of killing you.

Hunzuu is completely losing her shit on the balcony, tearing bricks out of the wall and trying to throw them far enough as she screams and wails. "Stop! Stop, please!!! It wasn't supposed to go like this! Your wife said you don't have to fight anymore! She said you two wasted you time together fighting things! She doesn't want you to hurt anymore! I saw her! The lammasu cursed me so I had to face her again! Please believe me! That sounds like her, right? Right?! Please! I'm sorry..."

The lizard finally notices Hunzuu, and he turns his head. Her words give him pause. "She always worried about me. But she always did what had to be done!"

You shrug and try to focus through the pain. "Heh..." You cough and struggle for breath. "Love's funny that way..."

"Love..."

The lizard tosses you aside, picks up its discarded glaive, and flees for the city gates. When the surviving centaurs see him flee, they signal for the fighting to stop. One of them speaks for the group. "Hold! Hold! I don't know why we all started killing each other, but let it end. We do not speak for Turtak, and he does not speak for us. Our offer stands. "Why? What do you want her for?" It hurts to stand up, but you rise and call out to them.

The centaurs get back into formation and hold their weapons out. "You see her as a monster like Hunzuu, power you can use to defend yourselves. But she is something different. I am Trail-Without-Dust, returned from, returned from the far country. We are a free company, deserters who have had enough of serving men. We will take her far away into the east, where she will be no further trouble to you. This is not a trick to rob you of her power. So we offer you relics of equal power.

"We've never used her as a weapon. Ask anyone here. We're keeping her, and you're leaving. Now."

Trail-Without-Dust gives you a hard look and a tense pause, but he finally nods. "Men summoned me back to the dying world. But I have had enough of men. I have had enough of all this. You will not see me again until the world ends." With that, he signals for his company to head back to the gates.

You collapse in relief and just catch your breath. You hope a skilled Blood Acolyte will help you soon with this bleeding laceration along your collarbone. You see that the Blood Priest is busy trying to revive Ninlil, using his dark drafts to draw blood out of the dead for fuel. Ninlil isn't moving. The other great priests are explaining the situation to the king, who's been freshly dressed and looks very worried.

You close your eyes. They'll get to you in time. You saved Hunzuu. You saved Iltani. That will have to do.

You are awakened by the familiar feeling of clawhugs. Hunzuu is holding you close, still weeping. Someone has removed your breastplate and patched you up with basic blood magic. You're out of mortal danger.

You almost tell Hunzuu to be brave for all the people, but you forgot that you might not be out in the plaza anymore. You see that you're in a finely-appointed room, probably in the palace. Outside you hear the distinctive sounds of blood sizzling away by magic. They must have made a makeshift hospital here. "What happened? Is Ninlil all right?"

Hunzuu squeezes you tight and sobs. Her silence says it all.

"Oh, kiddo... I don't know what to say. She was really brave." You get choked up a little. "I would've done the same for you, Zuu."

"Don't say that! I'm gonna take that guy's wife's advice. I'm not gonna let you fight anymore. I'm gonna get a bunch of money together and buy out your deal with the priests, so they can't send you out to fight any more!"

"Save your money. I'm gonna fight for you till there's nothing left of me to put back together." You meant for it to sound kind of badass, but you sniffle and choke back tears at the end of it, which rather ruins the effect.

Hunzuu shakes her head and squeezes you in her claws just to the point where it starts hurting. "Just... I dunno, just be careful. Until a year ago, I didn't have a family. My mom was dead, my dad never knew I was alive, and the most anybody ever did was put up with me. Now I have a... kind of a mother-y sister-y kind of... I have a Nakurtum. And I wanna keep her."

You nod and pat her back. "You will." You don't know what else to say.

Once the dead are sorted out and the king has sent heralds to assure the people that this was not an act of war from Turtak, you make the slow march back to the pyamid. Ninlil's father is waiting outside. The Blood Priest actually speaks to him directly. He has one demand - that a monument to Ninlil be carved inside the pyramid, somewhere prominent. He appears to accept.

When the pyramid gates are in view, you hear hurried, uneven hoofbeats. You draw your knife - you're a little weak to use a greataxe, so Hunzuu is carrying it for you. You expect a centaur still making mischief inside the city. You find a centaur, but it's not the one you're expecting.

Soul-of-Lightning appears, tired, red in the face. "I had to warn you... Centaurs are coming. They come to tell you lies. Do not believe them! A monster like a giant wasp came to Turtak and lured away many monsters, a few humans. Nur-Sin has called for all their heads. They are up to some trouble! I... I didn't arrive in time, did I?"

"No, you didn't. They came and left. What kept you?"

"I... there was a winery..."

he deserves both.
proceed with the confusing slaps then hugs.

well, at least the vengeance won't be directed directly at turtak.
It'll be directed at these pazuzu freaks.

You hug him. He smells like sour grapes and shit. "You'd better be back to stay," you say.

"Well... I could be. I thin they want my head now, too, so going back was not a choice."

"Good. Zuu missed you."

Soul-of-Lightning nods and smiles, relieved that he seems to have been forgiven. "Hunzuu? Where is she? She was kind. Wait..." He realizes that the scorpion walking near you is the same one he knew before. "Hunzuu?! By the dark lady's cunt, girl, you grew! Come let your old friend have a look at you!"

You slap him across the face. Hard. "Don't be late next time, you sack of shit."

"I'll try not to... Look, in my defense, it turned out to be really good wine!"

> I've got to break here. I hope you... well, maybe "enjoyed" is too strong a word, but I hope it made you want to come back next time!

I am sad, anu.
You've made me sad.
Ninlil was cool.
>>
>>31529281
you could have stopped this. You could have told her to run away
>>
>>31529321
I -did- say we should dismount, anon.

Right at the start of the combat.
It would have gone better for both of us.
>>
>>31529255
If anything I loved the change in perspective and while something sad happened i'm glad to see Soul of Lightning again.
>>
>>31529255
thx 4 runin budi gud thred
>>
>>31529380
Oh god, I read that as "thanks for ruining our buddy." Feels were felt this night.
>>
>>31529255
Well, it was a sad thread, but thanks anyways Anu!
>>
>>31529479
I am kind of miffed that ninlil's gone. Intensely miffed.

We can't even go to the afterlife and bring her snacks.

AND if we break the gates for her, she'll be cursed with flesh eating.
>>
>>31529479
b-but I say that literally every quest....
>>
well, I guess next thread is a building ninlil a monument thread.
>>
>>31529479

It seems really pitiful to have a major character killed off by a minor character because of one piss-poor roll. Oh well, at least you have the balls to not pull your punches.

Regardless, if we get some sort of underworld adventure spin off out of this, I'll be happy.
>>
>>31529916
anon I am trying to control my sadness/outrage, please don't poke it with a stick.
>>
Rolled 2, 5, 3, 6 = 16

>>31529937

Let the hate flow through you, anon. Something, something, dark side.
>>
>>31529532
I thought it was a pun...
>>
>>31530009
nah.
I'm just going to be sad for quite a while, and then return to life as normal slightly more jaded.
>>
>>31530058
Anu, how old is the scorpion boy in that other city?
>>
>>31530296
About 10 or 11. You're not certain. Young enough to not care about girls yet. You're definitely one molting ahead of him now.
>>
>>31530327
Oh. That's actually slightly older than I thought. No /ss/ then.
>>
>>31530327

I feel the need to ask for future threads, how does music with rolls work? Is this simply there for everyone's entertainment, or does that mean that you will take later rolls so long as they have music attached?

Also, how low is "catastrophic failure"?
>>
>>31530414
4d6

Well, catastrophic should be...

4.

The Chinese and Japanese number for death. Lovely.
>>
>>31530404
eh, he'll be after us when he's like 15.

we'll go to scorpiprom.
>>
>>31530414
I will take a later roll if it is higher then the first roll and has dramatically appropriate music attached. And you can't use the same piece of music twice.

Catastrophic failure kind of depends on the task. I secretly set a DC for each thing before calling for a roll for it. Falling only 1-3 points short of it is usually a marginal failure, and more than that is a complete failure. I don't have a hard-and-fast number for critical failures, but if a roll is obviously way lower than average, sometimes I'll think of some additional way to make things bad.
>>
>>31530610

Good to know. Also, I'm curious if we have any general idea of how many wounds normal people can take. Seems Ninlil and Nakurtum only had two in them before they kicked and kick the bucket respectively.
>>
>>31530665
yeah, seems like ninlil only had two.

I guess hunzuu has a lot because of armor plating.
>>
>>31530665
People take wounds equal to their Toughness. Average humans and other mooks have 1, Nakurtum has 2, the absolute human maximum is around 3, and Hunzuu currently has 5 because she beastly.
>>
>>31530786
I'm glad we spent like five training sessions in a row working on physical conditioning.
>>
I thoroughly regret the decision to take ninlil along to get some more experience.
worst decision. Fucking worst.

RIP in pieces lion babe.
>>
>>31534457
we didn't get to know her well enough.
I looked forward to doing a lot of combat training with her.
>>
This could've gone better. I feel like some bad calls were made
Then again judging by "they come to tell you lies!" line, this might've gone way worse, I guess
RIP Ninlin, I hope you have your underworld to go to
>>
>>31534602
Ninlil*
Fuck, I thought captcha saved me from that typo
>>
>>31534602
I think she goes to the shitty underworld.
The same one most people go to.
It's a really awful fate.
Maybe we can find her when we sleep.
Maybe we can find other people too.
>>
>>31534616
>I think she goes to the shitty underworld
>It's a really awful fate
Aw, dude...
But she's a lion-lady. Wasn't there a race of lion-people so she could join them?
>>
>>31534648
maybe, but they'd be in the shitty clay-dirt no-sky afterlife where you fade into nothingness forever.

Wheras centaurs get a fancy centaur afterlife that's plains and not eternal existential dread.

Other than centaurs, everyone has the shittiest afterlife.
>>
>>31534671
God damn it
>>
>>31534697
our alternative to this horrible eventual fading to nothingness is... unleashing all the dead souls onto the living as zombies.

so I'm hoping we can at least visit ninlil while we sleep.

What happens if we run into mom?
>>
>>31534712
I doubt we can visit Ninlil in our sleep since I suspect we're limited to scorpifolk afterlife only, and that opening the gate will free only them as well
We could (maybe) strike a deal with the gods to place her there, but even if we open the gate, that would be a horrible thing to do, not to mention it's a very temporary existance
But I feel that this train of thought is a slippery slope and we should just cut our losses
And become paranoid as fuck because we've just been proven that ANYONE can die
>>
>>31534748
I think we just sort of wake up near the scorpions. we've SEEN lizards in that afterlife before. Maybe the scorpions who die land near the lizards who die.
Either way, it's the same afterlife their sharing.

next time we're in scorpiland, we should see if we can just... find some other people.
>>
>>31534767
>we've SEEN lizards in that afterlife before
We've seen A lizard, the one we killed, and it was an "afterlife" brought fourth by the curse
That said, we can barely blame lizardguy. We DID kill his wife, and not exactly in a fair manner too
>>
>>31534785
no, don't you remember?
way back when we were first starting to see the afterlife, we saw a scorpiman who attacked a lizard, and then attacked him for being a bully.

and I really want to blame lizardguy. My feelings are very conflicted.
One the one hand, we expected him to stop the war after killing his wife.
On the other hand, he came into our city and murdered one of our friends and a bunch of guards.
On the third hand, we didn't get his wife's message to him in time.
On the fourth hand, we're too soft to take him now and by the time he hardens he'll be with a bunch of other pazuzu freaks.
On the fifth hand, we need to rampage all up on those pazuzu freaks regardless of lizard guy.
>>
>>31534847
>we saw a scorpiman who attacked a lizard
Oh shit, you're right, I forgot
Maybe we'll see Ninlil then. Maybe she wondered there just to wait for us
>>
>>31534883
hopefully we mentioned in passing we went to ghostland every so often.

I mean, it wasn't a secret. we DID tell people.
>>
>"Oh boy Scorpion Girl Quest! Today is a good da-"
>Ninlil is killed.

I am so sad right now, I really liked her. Curse not being able to participate!
>>
>>31535938
does it make you feel any better if I told you I felt like I REALLY FUCKED UP as a player?
>>
>>31535980

Not really no. On the bright side though, we didn't fall for their lies, which is nice.
>>
Wait, I'm confused. I had to go to sleep just before the battle, so I missed it. That's why I have to ask:
Where did we roll bad enough to pretty much one-shot Ninlil? I'm not complaining (much), just asking for clarification.

The post where Ninlil got hurt by a centaur links to a 16, which is above average for four dice.
If above average is bad enough to pretty much kill a character (not to mention a monster character) in one hit, then what the hell was the DC?
Even if she took another wound when the lizard stepped on her, she should still be a lot tougher than a "heroic human", and two wounds shouldn't be enough to kill her.
Did the dice take a backseat in favor of drama in this thread?
Again, I'm not complaining or asking for a retcon or anything. I'd just like an explanation for how something this terrible could happen without any major failures.
The two rolls which led to posts hurting Ninlil were above average and not "obviously way lower than average".
>>
>>31536025
hooray!
Still fucked up and got ninlil killed though!
I kind of hate that lizard guy, even though he has understandable motivations.
>>31536040
I -was- kind of surprised by how she turned out dead. I thought we were doing reasonably well.

I am holding out a bit of hope that the blood priest is currently arm deep in not-QUITE-dead-yet lion. But that is most likely not the case.
>>
>>31534847
>we need to rampage all up on those pazuzu freaks regardless of lizard guy.

Yeah, We need to get on top of that before it turns into the apocalypse.

An entire heard of Centaurs, some of whom are wounded, must leave a trail. We should set some trackers on them. In 2-3 days, when our shell had hardened.... WE ARE HUNZUU, THE DESTROYER! We need to put the Wasp-Bitch down.

I'm thinking about this confrontation and how they may react to us. Seriously, we put on a hell of a showing at Turhuk. We fucking slaughtered all before us. Our body count was probably close to everyone elses put together.

Most of them would have seen us first hand. They all know what we looked like. The all know to fear/respect us.

Now imagine when they see us for the first time since our moulting.... When we're a hell of a lot bigger. They'll shit themselves. I bet half the Humans and Centaur from Turhuk flee the moment they see us.

We'll mostly have to deal with Wasp-Bitch, Lizard-taur and a few of their red shirts that didn't have the sense to run.
>>
>>31536119
Stupid lizard man. It sticks in my craw that if we were slightly more OR less bloodthirsty, the entire lizard problem would have been avoided as they'd both be dead or both be alive.

But otherwise, yeah, we're taking down that wasp. Thing.
