You are Flying officer Julian Reber of the Royal Air Force. You joined the RAF to fight the BETA, aliens who threaten to exterminate all life on Earth. You're currently supporting the defense of the Italian front, which has been having problems with tunnels dug up by the BETA. You identified the new giant worm-like strain of BETA responsible for digging the tunnels and designed a missile that should kill it, or at least wounded seriously.

You've also just finished converting one of your assault cannons to a missile launcher. It's shoddy, but it should be enough to get the job done, if you can find the worm again. And if there's only one of them.

Vivian is currently pouring over a map of Italy and doing her best to track the worm's movements based on reports from TSFs in the field.

"This is a complete mess," she says. "We can get a general idea from seismometres, but we can't risk anyone to get a visual confirmation."

"We can make do with what we have," you say. "It won't be the first time."

"I suppose so." Vivian sighs. "The safest thing to do would be to track it down in the tunnels. It'd still be dangerous, but at least we wouldn't have to give it any bait."

"That's a lot of tunnels to search through." You look at the map. "Do you think we could lure it somewhere?"

"Maybe," she says. "We do have a rough map of the tunnels. We could try to lure it to a juncture and flank it. If we can get it out on the surface somehow, we might also be able to call in a naval bombardment. It should be fine so long as there are no lasers nearby."

>"Let's just track it through the tunnels."
>"We should lure it to a junction and fire a missile at its flank."
>"We should lure it outside and get a naval bombardment going. I want as much firepower as possible."

"We should lure it outside and get a naval bombardment going. I want as much firepower as possible."

Vivian nods and draws some circles on the map to indicate areas that might be within range of naval bombardment. They're close to your fire bases, but that's to be expected.

"These are the spots we can use based on the tunnels the BETA have made so far," she says. "The problem is finding a way to get the worm there."

"We'll need to find it first." You take out another map with topographic data of the area. "While we're at it, can you pinpoint the spots we'll have to check for lasers?"

"Sure." Vivian marks the spots that would give lasers the best vantage point on your potential areas of operation. There are far more than you'd like. "The good news is, we are checking the tunnels and that are no large movements of BETA overland. If the BETA have lasers with them, it'll take time for them to get into position. We should have time to intercept."

"We're better off hoping they never show up at all," you say. "Anyway, that still leaves us with the original problem."

The two of you stare at the map. Vivian's eyes move back and forth as she nervously taps her pen against the table.

>"We'll never get anywhere at this rate. Let's just send in a few squadrons and shoot at it until it surfaces somewhere."
>"If the worm tracks targets like the lasers do, it'll be attracted to electronics. Maybe we can group together some TSFs as bait."
>"I still have my notes on the BETA reactor components. I might be able to put together a transmitted that would attract the BETA to a specific location, but it might attract more than just the worm."

"I still have my notes on the BETA reactor components," you say. "I might be able to put together a transmitter that would attract the BETA to a specific location, but it might attract more than just the worm."

Vivian raises an incredulous eyebrow.

"You can do that?"

"Of course. Probably. Maybe." Your confidence falters, but only slightly. "This can't possibly be harder than inventing a completely new missile in a few hours."

"I'll take your word for it." Vivian rolls up her maps and then kisses you. "I'll bring these to the Group captain and finalize the strategy while you work. Good luck."

"Thanks."

You go down into the bowels of the carrier, where the tech crews keep their pseudo-scrap yard of workable spare parts. You're going to need a computer, some transistors and some kind of antenna.

You quickly gather all the materials you'll need and assemble a transmitter. You decide to forgo the antenna entirely and transmit the signal through your TSFs. It'll give the signal more range.

You spread out your notes and program the computer to emit a signal which will, if you've decrypted the first signals you detected correctly, attract the BETA to you. You even manage to remove the signals that are most likely associated with the standard BETA strain. Among the remaining "dummy" signals should be one that will attract the worm. You won't get swarmed by a hundred thousand BETA the minute you flip the switch on this thing.

The next step is to connect it to your Typhoon. The carrier's mechanics are very eager to help after the verbal beatdown they got from Vivian, but you can't trust them with something this sensitive. Besides, you don't really need them. It's enough to plug the transmitter into one of the ports you use for your maintenance laptop and secure it in place with duct tape so it doesn't move around in the cockpit.

Vivian climbs into the Typhoon just as you finish, dressed in her fortified suit.

"I hope you're done," she says. "The squadron on duty needs to be relieved, so we're heading out one way or the other."

"I just finished," you say. "If this works, it'll attract the worm to our ambush spot."

"Excellent." Vivian smiles. "I'll let the Group captain know while you get changed."

The locker room isn't that far from here, but you also keep a spare suit in the Typhoon in case of emergency and it'd be fun to mess with Vivian a bit...

You delay just long enough for Vivian to call the Group captain and report on the situation. Then you take out your spare fortified suit and toss your jacket in a small cargo compartment. Her eyes go wide as she realizes what you're doing, but it's not like she can just hang up on the CO.

Vivian blushes as you take off your shirt and completely loses track of the conversation when you take off your pants; the contours of her fortified suit are very inspiring.

"What?" She startles for a moment. "Oh, yes sir. No, no problem, sir."

Trying to fit a fortified suit over a bulge is never, ever pleasant, and you haven't had to do it since your first few weeks of TSF training, but that just makes the whole thing feel nostalgic.

Vivian sighs in relief when you finally finish putting your suit on. Then she looks up and gives you a mock glare.

"Please don't distract me like that," she says.

"What?" You shrug. "It's nothing you haven't seen before, and I thought you deserved to be teased a bit."

"Well then, the joke's on you," Vivian says. "Elaine's been watching since you took off your jacket."

"Best ass in the RAF," Elaine says from behind you.

"Duly noted," you say. "Anyway, what's the plan, aside from the parts we've already covered."

"Secure the area and lure the BETA in," Elaine says. "The two of you are basically in charge of the operation, so you get to decide how you want to handle it."

You look to Vivian.

"Do you have any particular requests?"

She shakes her head.

"I'll coordinate the squadron either way," she says. "We can help clear the area, or we can stand by until we get the all-clear and activate the beacon."

You'll need to carry the missile launcher, so your weapons will be severely limited.

"I'll see you in the field then." Elaine waves and goes off to prepare her Tornado for launch.

Meanwhile, you plug into the Typhoon's cockpit and double-check everything, particularly the missile launcher. You'll have to carry it around until you're done, but if you're careful, there shouldn't be any problems.

"What's our expected contact," you ask.

"It should be Grapplers and Tanks, mostly," Vivian says. "We think there might be a few Lasers as well, so fly low."

"Understood."

You launch alongside the rest of your flight and head towards your designated area. Code 991 flashes in your HUD when you get close enough to spot the BETA, but you silence the alarm. It's just a distraction.

"Contacts confirmed," Vivian says. "Looks like Grapplers, Tanks and a few Lasers."

"Arthur Vanguard, this is Arthur 2," Elaine says. "Engage the enemy at will."

The fight is a one-sided extermination. The Tanks and Grapplers are so tightly packed together that they can't manoeuvre. In fact, all they do is block the Lasers' line of sight. The warm of aliens dies almost immediately and Vivian ends up spending most of her time coordinating the other Arthur flights. It looks like they're doing as well as you are.

"Area of operation is clear," Vivian says. "We may now begin."

"Is there anything else you can tell me before we do this?"

"Give a moment..." You wait for Vivian to look through her data. "Naval bombardment is on standby. I'll coordinate their attack, so don't worry about it. Aside from that, we need to decide how we're going to deploy the TSFs. We can send detachments to ambush it in the tunnels, or we can all wait for it on the surface."

"All right, I'll call everyone over," Vivian says. "We'll be surrounding one of the tunnel entrances. I'm sending you the exact coordinates."

Vivian pings the location of the tunnel entrance on your HUD and you position your Typhoon just outside of it. You'll be the first to engage it, but since you're the one with the missiles, there's no one else who could do it anyway.

You patiently wait for the rest of Arthur squadron to form up around you.

"Arthur squadron is in position," Vivian says. "All TSFs are operational, 120mm ammunition is full in all TSFs and naval bombardment is on standby. We are ready to proceed."

"The emitter is active," you say. "Keep an eye out for hostiles."

"I'm monitoring all your sensors," Vivian says. "I have a contact at our perimeter, but it's moving very, very fast. ETA is 30 minutes."

Thirty minutes is plenty of time to prepare. You check the missiles once again while Vivian uploads real-time data to the Royal Navy destroyers in charge of the bombardment. You're certain everyone involved has their finger just a hair's breadth away from their trigger.

The worm is soon close enough that it shows up on your own sensors. It's even more massive than you'd previously imagined, more than a mile long total. The upside is that it doesn't seem to be accompanied by any other BETA.

The downside is that you don't have a lot of targeting options. You were able to outfit the 120mm armor-piercing shells with radio transmitters for your missiles' targeting systems, but that won't do you any good until someone actually shoots at the worm. By then, you probably won't need the targeting assistance at all. However, you might be able to patch your missiles through to your Typhoon's sensors and get a lock that way. It'd be a little difficult you might be able to shoot it down before it even emerges from the tunnel.

You could also just wait for the worm to emerge and shoot it then. Given its size, there's no way you can possibly miss it at this distance.

Carrier-class
Nickname: Megaworm
As it is a rarely-sighted and unconfirmed strain, there is no official scientific/binomial name. Its first appearance was when a single, massive specimen, measuring at 176 meters tall, 1800 meters long and 176 meters wide,[10] appeared inside the Original Hive during Operation Ouka, carrying an extremely large amount of smaller BETA inside of it. Its sound signature was identical to that of whenever the BETA were moving deep underground, which suggests that one of them is used whenever they do so. During its first appearance, it was identified as "unconfirmed large strain" (未確認 大型種/mikakunin oogata-shu).
The Carrier-type BETA are currently the most-seldom seen strain that is not part of a Hive structure; one is encountered by STF A-01 in the Kashgar Hive during Operation Ouka, while two Carrier-class make an appearance in The Day After during the Defence of Seattle; one retreats, while the other is destroyed in combat by the use of an S-11 Device. During combat, its size and outer body covering allowed it to resist battleship fire, making it one of the toughest variants of the BETA yet.

Your finger hovers over the trigger, but you wait for the perfect opportunity to launch. After all, you only have three missiles and you have no idea what will happen if you hit it in the tunnels. It might retreat or get stuck so you'd be forced to dig it out.

You can feel the ground rumble as the worm approaches and soon, you can hear it and see the nearby trees and rubble shake because of the worm's approach. Behind you, Vivian counts down the seconds until it emerges.

Then the ground explodes outwards. The first thing you see is a maw of fangs. This, it seems, is the head of the beast. Your finger pushes down on the trigger just as Vivian calls for the naval bombardment.

The missile directly impacts the alien's mouth and explodes in a flash of white light. Your heat sensors go nuts and it's only because of the distance and the direction of the charge that your Typhoon isn't blow back.

The first thing you see when the dust clears is the massive, gaping wound that the worm's face has become. It looks like its still moving, so it must not have any vital organs in its "head," but it must be having a very bad day after taking that hit.

The second thing you see is a pile of BETA corpses right inside the worm's mouth.

"Vivian, for future reference, please note that the worm is actually a tunnelling land carrier," you say.

"Un-understood." You can't tell if Vivian's surprised because of the explosion or because of the worm, but you don't have time to check. Your missile launcher is ready for a second launch and the first round of artillery should be arriving any second. The rest of Arthur squadron isn't making a dent, but the Royal Navy and you might be able to.

You fire a second missile down the carrier's throat just as the bombardment starts hitting. The artillery isn't doing massive damage, but it is hurting the parts of the carrier that had already been damaged by the first missile and it's certainly hurting the normal BETA that are crawling out of the worm. Either there weren't any lasers in the first place, or they've been taken out already.

The second missile explodes about halfway through the BETA. The ground in the surrounding area bursts out and the sinks. The explosion must have been enough to collapse the tunnel and cut the worm in half. The parts you can see certainly aren't moving anymore.

"It looks like the worm is dead," Vivian says.

"Half of it seems dead, at any rate," you say.

Some of the BETA are crawling out of the thing's corpse, but between the bombardment and the rest of Arthur squadron, they're not making it very far.

"We'll need to send someone inside the corpse to confirm everything inside it is dead," Vivian says. "And we'll also need to verify the other half of it."

"Okay, we'll check out the back half," you say. "We'll need the last missile in case it's still alive somehow.

"I'll give the order," Vivian says. "Arthur vanguard, this Arthur 3. We are moving to investigate the other half of the BETA worm and confirm the kill. Please provide escort."

"Arthur 3, this is Arthur 2," Elaine says. "We'll form on you and follow your lead. We've had a good run of it so far, but we need to be careful."

You lead the flight to the second section of the worm. Getting there feels a hell of a lot longer than it should.

The ground tunnel has indeed collapsed and it looks like the worm has been split in half. The second half doesn't seem to be moving and you don't see any BETA corpses nearby. It looks like most of the reinforcements were at the front of the carrier.

And we can use it as a prototype to make more of those.

Save the missles, these are anti-worm missles.

The more intact the more able we are to study the corpse.

You've only got one missile left and you'd like to have a prototype to send out for mass production as soon as possible.

"Vivian, I'm going down to confirm the kill," you say. "Let me know if anything's wrong."

"There doesn't seem to be anything left alive down here, but I'll keep close watch," she says.

You carefully fly your Typhoon down to into the collapse tunnel. You quickly cycle through your external cameras, but you don't see any BETA, dead or alive. Nothing aside from the carrier, anyway.

The carrier itself isn't moving either. The top of it is sagging slightly, but considering the hit it took, it's holding up surprisingly well. Then again, it has to be tough to carve out tunnels.

You enter the carrier and go in as far as you can, but it's not moving anymore and it's clear there's nothing inside.

"Kill confirmed," you say. "Looks like things are going to quiet down around here."

"I doubt it," Vivian says. "The EU will want to secure the area. We'll probably have to go on a few thinning operations in northern Italy."

"I guess it's not like I can complain about being asked to do my job." You shrug. "We'll just deal with it like we always do."

And that's it for today. Next Muv Luv Royal Quest will be Wednesday April 23rd since I'm assuming people will be busy on Easter. However, I may run a one-shot called Fixer Quest on Sunday just to test the waters a bit. In any case, I'll make an announcement on Twitter.

'Night folks.

Holy shit, the amount of accomplishments Julian Reber do in his tour is fucking amazing.

The S-11 Missle, The BETA signal, the reactor shit, the whole LaserJagd shit that is historical recorded in his instant 1/4 laser death strike, getting the black widow, the AI, saving England and Europe from terrorists. Even help out Richard Hall in the Beta Reactor Research.

This is getting fucking real.
