You are Anthony Grant, or you were. Now you are Ambrosius, a cleric in a cart traveling to Big Apple. A few hours ago, when this all began things, looked like they were going so well. You had a cart, a plan, and a bag full of potions. Now the monotony of the Mojave desert landscape is beginning to tear at your mind. Bushes, road, and sandy dirt. Every so often you saw a tree. Despite the rarity, the trees did little to rekindle your excitement. With Canis driving now, you have the luxury of turning around. When you do, you see everyone else looking just as bored as you do. Certainly there is something to do, but what?

Your line of thought is broken by Canis asking, “Alright. I'm hungry. Hand me some food.” He holds his hand out to you, but keeps his eyes on the road. You open your inventory only to realize the horrible truth that you completely forgot to get food.

Couple things that I thought about after the second thread.

Check how much the gate lever went down, depending on the amount we may not need to go to the south.
Check with other guild memebers/friends that have people on their friend list who are in the south american server so that we can make sure that we can coordinate the reactivation of the gates.
Figure out if party/guild/raid telepathy works between servers, just because friend telepathy doesn't work over servers does not exclude other forms.

Oh, by the way, does anyone else think that pretty soon we will have some sort of border town start up between the North and South American servers?

How could you tell Canis that you forgot the food!?

That is when Lilac pulls a loaf of bread out of her bag and places it into Canis' extended palm. The Wolf-Hair then begins to munch on the bread. “Not much of a taste” he comments.

You look stare at Lilac for a short while.

She returns your gaze. “Want some too?”

You can't think of anything else to do so you nod.

She hands you a loaf of bread. You tear a piece off and pop it in your mouth. There doesn't seem to be any taste at all, just a slight texture. It is better than nothing, is what you tell yourself, but looking down at the bread, you quickly lose your appetite.

Minutes pass and the tyrannical boredom returns. You need to do something...

"I am a humble samurai with no home!" He announces, "A ronin: The most justified of all the samurai, revered for their combat ability and sense of Justice!"

You thought about pointing out he mentioned justice twice, but you decide not to.

"With my samurai sword in hand, I shall wander here and there! Hither, thither, and yon! I will correct all that is wrong, and punish the wicked!"

You can feel yourself getting dumber with each word.

"Never again will people be forced to toil under the yoke horrible ... stuff!"

Each of his words ripped at your brain. It was like he exuded some kind of anti-intelligence. No man could be this stupid, right? He must be joking, surely.

"When I come to town, there will be no more suffering and all evil with be killed by my blade! Anyone who stands in my way is no different than the evil I hunt, so don't get in my way!"

There is no God here. Only the horrid wailing of the mad and the infinite expanse of suffering.

"The samurai code tells us that we must know our enemy to know ourselves, and there is no greater knowledge of oneself than our taste!"

This must be what going mad feels like.

"That is why we must eat everything we kill!"

You can't take this anymore. You must change the subject or you will die of brain damage. "So, why did you join us?" You ask, left eye twitching, foam forming in your mouth.

"I was kicked out of the city!" He announces, "Being exiled is the first step in becoming a ronin!"

You hold your head in your hands. There was madness in talking, and madness in not talking. There has to be something better to do.

That is when you spot a giant cactus walking around on the road. It meanders left and right, but still travels down the path towards you.

Okay, everyone. I made a combat system, but I have no idea how it will work on tg. This is a flow chart on how these things will work. For the sake of simplicity we will skip the Formation Stage for this fight.

Things will look really complicated, so I'll talk everyone through everything for this fight. If this system becomes a disaster I'll just scrap it.

This is what a battlefield looks like. You'll notice that each card does something on a roll of 1-12. That's because you are going to be rolling a 1d12 to determine what happens. The roll counts for both the Party Members and the Enemy, so knowing what squares the enemy attacks on what roll is important.

First roll is a 4, which is the Cactus Man attacking the Front Center slot (Trove) for 4 damage, but due to Trove's armor, the damage is reduced to 1. Everyone leaps out of the cart and falls into formation almost naturally. Trove pulls out a flintlock and fires upon the beast, taunting it. In response, Judicature unleashes a barrage of knives. You didn't even know there was a ranged spec for duelist.

The Cactus Man begins shaking back and forth. "Everyone get back!" Lilac commands. Since when did she become party leader?

"I'm over here, you bilge rat!" Trove yells out, "Yarr harr!" With another shot from his pistol, the storm of needles goes raining on Trove, who had run far from the group. Trove simply smiled as all the tiny bits of damage bounced off of his armor.

The cactus went running up to the Pirate, unleashing a backhanded slap upon him. "Is that all you go, you powder monkey!?" Very minimal damage to the pirate.

With the creature distracted, Lilac raises her staff to the sky. "THUNDER BOLT!" A decent amount of damage. Quite amazing damage for someone 23 levels under.

It slaps him across the face, dealing its own massive damage.

The cactus then begins to shake back and forth again. "Yarr! Me taunt's still on cooldown!" The needles go everywhere. The needles can't pierce your armor, but everyone else is being pelted with damage. Judicature shoves Lilac out of the area of the attack, taking the damage for her.

You smack the Cactus Man one last time and it slams into the ground before bursting into bubbles, gold, a mana potion, and a cactus fruit.

Brilliant light surrounds Lilac. For that single fight she seems to have leveled twice.

You hand Takeshi the fruit. He opens his mouth and brings it part way inside when he suddenly stop. He holds the fruit and looks at it, then looks at you. He flings it up in the air, and with one mighty slice, cuts it in two, and sheaths his sword in one fluid motion. He grabs both halves and hands you one. You take it.

"This way, we'll both grow stronger." He says with a thumbs up. You look down at your half and realize your 'half' is quite smaller. Takeshi shoves his share in his mouth and gives you a "Mmmmm!"

You raise an eyebrow. He is trolling. This has confirmed it. This fruit tastes like nothing and he is messing with you.

He motions for you to eat.

With a sigh you put it in your mouth. It is sweet and watery, almost like a watermelon. It's actually quite good, you decide. "Mmm!" You comment.

"Mmm mmm, mmm?" Takeshi responds.

"Mmmm..." You nod in agreement.

It suddenly dawns on you that this has taste.

"Holy shit!" You exclaim, "I can taste this!"

"What?" Canis calls from the cart.

"Cactus fruit has taste!" You yell to him.

"Like... taste taste?" He calls back, "Not fake taste?"

"Nah! Real taste!"

"Let's go farm up some cactuses!"

The pirate chimes in, "Yar har! Let's turn their fruit into grog!"

"Stop!" Lilac announces, "Wandering this zone at night is a bad idea! We should just stay in camp!" A pause, "Also, it's cacti."

The sun was almost gone, but that fruit had TASTE!

"So he spawns and then what happens?" You cut her off.

She stops. "He's twenty levels above cap and counts as a raid level creature."

They're something that only pre-30 players get to help them level faster early on, and I think they're like the True Levers in that there isn't any (known) way to duplicate them. Of course you could always kidnap a bunch of scrubs and force them to give you their EXP pots every day... but that would be wrong and Shiroe would come beat you up for it.

I'm looking at the wiki, and it looks like you'd need Alchemist AND Pharmacist. Alchemist will study the "chemicals" that make up an EXP pot, and identify ingredients with similar properties, while the Pharmacist mixes and matches the ingredients and maybe other potions to create something with a similar effect.

Night falls and it is time to go to sleep, but as you lay in your tent, looking at the fiber covering you, you can't seem to fall asleep. So much has happened and you just can't seem to calm down. Cthulhu-Illuminati. Coyote heart thieving. This world felt very dangerous suddenly.

You toss and turn in your sleeping back, but no position feels good. You get up and leave your tent. Trove and Canis had gone off to drink grog and sing sea shanties. From the flame in the distance and the sound of them singing, you assume that they are over there at a second camp fire.

You nod, but you have no idea what she is talking about. "Yeah, that Le-Miz sure is... a thing."

"It's a musical... and a movie."

You simply continue to nod.

"Stars is my favorite song."

You just nod. This is extremely awkward.

"I was watching the movie when I was a kid, and my father walked in. He went on this..." She tried to find the word, you assume, "Diatribe about how the movie was terrible." She nods to herself, "Then he pulls out these mp3s, going on about the 10th anniversary and how it was the REAL Les Mis."

You continue nodding, still having no idea what she was talking about.

"And... I don't know. I just felt like singing." She says, "You ever feel that way some times."

"Can't say I have." You respond.

There is another long silence and then, "Ah. Well. I'm just going to go to sleep, then."

"Okay." You respond.

She walks off and you are just glad this conversation is over.

Best I can say is to try and push updates out faster so you can maintain peoples interest and cover a lot of ground. Fledgling quests are pretty rough the first few threads; but rapid updates can help.

Also take a look at other quests. It feels like you're rushing a lot of things. Describe the environment, the characters, don't be afraid to be a little floral with your language.

Your combat writing... leaves a lot to be desired; check out combat heavy quests like the all but dead Bleach Quest for some ideas I guess. Right now they feel like chores.

I'm pretty lost on the combat system; but I love the card idea and their design (lot of work clearly went into those, so kudos for taking the effort). Consider dropping some aspects of your combat system and streamlining it.

I'm not sure how to streamline it further. As of right now, you roll a d12 and that's the entire round of combat, but I will agree that it feels pretty complicated and I'm doing a terrible job of explaining it.

I like the card concept a lot especially if we can upgrade and switch cards out when we get new gear or teammates.

As far as how to accomplish your goals to make things, simple, highly strategic. and hands off... the only way I've seen that done in quests is to give the players free reign and have them write out what spells and actions they should take.

But they you'e having to make and balance dozens of abilities or preventing your readers from controlling the team as a whole.

When it boils down to it; think of how to simplify the explanation of how the mechanics work, but be more fluid in your descriptions. Right now it sounds like a play-by-play of a card game.

This works for the demo which our first combat was, but don't be afraid to expand on the combat scenes you write and really paint a picture.

We skipped the Formation Stage, where the players would normally be able to change the formation of the party.

You'll also later get to swap out effects on cards, but I was going to hold off on that until I was sure that we would use the system. For example, Lilac would spend her skill points to upgrade Thunder Bolt and increase the spread, so it would work on 3, 10, and 7 OR she could use it to unlock a new spell like Chain Lightning, which works on a 3 and deals 3 damage, but triples damage against enemies with the Group sub-type.

This is the biggest problem the questrunner Cosgrove has. He spends so much time slapping players shit for doing things; then when players get mad because they took the safe option and bad things happens he gets pissy that they're mad they got bad results from playing the quest the way they assumed he wanted them to play.

Honestly, with regards to combat I might just go with a skills pastebin that lists the MP cost/Effect/Cooldown of our powers, list the HP/MP/status info of the combatants, and each round of combat list the most obvious choices for what we might do in that situation, with our party members doing stuff based on either their best judgement (or lack thereof) or the battle plan if we had time to plan. For example:

Ambrosius, Trove, and Takeshi are fighting a pair of cacti!

Ambrosius: 100/100 HP, 80/100 MP
Trove: 120/150 HP, 50/70 MP, being attacked by Cactus 1, taunt on cooldown for 2 turns
Takeshi: 30/80 HP, 30/70 MP, being attacked by Cactus 2
Cactus 1: 40/100 HP
Cactus 2: 70/100 HP

[blah blah blah narrative text explaining what the fuck is happening and everyone yelling at Takeshi for being a retard and drawing aggro]

[ ] Use Holy Light, help Trove finish Cactus 1 off so you can both help Takeshi next round! (5MP, 20 damage, DC5 roll because Trove is tanking it and Cacti are dumb, 1 turn cooldown)
[ ] Holy shit Takeshi is low, why the fuck didn't he stick to the plan? Use Heal to cure him! (5MP, heals 30, no roll required, 2 turn cooldown)
[ ] Jesus tittyfucking Christ Takashi might die, run over there and use Holy Pocket Sand to save him while Trove deals with the other one. (10MP, 10 damage and [blind] each turn for 3 rounds, DC10 roll to target the spell while running, 5 turn cooldown)

Takeshi reminds me a lot of me as far as his abilities go.
I'm just chilling in the back being an affliction lock; doing my dots and making sure things stay debuffed when HOLY SHIT BOSS CHARGES ME and people are yelling that I pulled threat when I was doing my damn job so we try again and I change my style up and refresh DoTs less then people yell at me that my DPS was low.

This was a month before I learned that I needed to do raids to get better armor, but I couldn't do raids because my gear didn't have a high enough score so I got caught in a neat unescapable loop of inactivity.

This was a month a a half before, when finally doing a raid and seeing a super rare 5% item drop I needed and lost... to the GM. Who was a tank. Because he wanted to give it to his mage alt his sister was using during the raid.

I quit the game immediately after.


Takeshi is an annoying faggot, but don't push him too hard. Don't let him make the same mistakes. Don't make him quit the game.

Raid and all that will be fun as hell, but grinding is just that. Grinding. It's awful.

/tg/ prefers talking and story over combat, but if combat is fun, immerse, and filled with clutch moment it's well liked.

Just remember that while numbers, spreadsheets, and min-maxing are fun and good for table tops; sometimes you need to put all of that aside for questing and be more free form.

On the other hand you REALLY want to avoid power creep especially early on. So beat /tg/s face in whenever we try that.

Sure, if they go and take on Coyote and get wrecked, no one is going to bat an eyelash, but what if a horde of goblins rise up to go wreck a town? I assume /tg/ is going to make some "We must justice!" speech and they are going to stay. What do I do then?

Sure, realistically they would wreck your shit, but /tg/ could easily go on a rant about how the MC should do XYZ, ensuring victory. If I ignore the plan, I'm an asshole who just punished the players for choosing option 3 instead of option 2. If I have the plan not work, it's the exact same thing. The most I can hope for is a "You succeed, but at a cost." which over time will allow for all kinds of bullshit to happen.

People may get buttblasted at how our party was unable to defend a small town from 80 marauding native american themed knights; but numbers dictate that fight was not going to go well no matter what we did for instance.

Sometimes you HAVE to show your players that making stupid choices gets them fucked up. If however /tg/ lays out a plan and you think it could work; run with it and see what happens. You can always blame dice.

If an idea people are rallying around won't work in this world, just say so. You can also have our little caster act as your own voice of reason.

In short use your best judgement and do what you think is fun and remind players they will not succeed every single time on everything they do.

Quests tend to be more technical with players rolling dice and using stats to play. They're more like pen-and-paper tabletop games played over the internet.

CYOA are more verbal. No dice are used and only player inputs (usually no customs) are given leaving nothing up to chance. Stats are rarely used. These are more like Choose Your Own Adventure books.


Both ways are completely valid and lend themselves better to certain audiences and types of stories.

If you want you can always use the basics of the d20 based combat system I made. It boils down into three categories:
HP
Attack
Armor

HP is the highest stat almost always. Attack adds its value to the dice rolled while armor negates it.

For instance lets say a player has 8HP, 3 Armor, and 2 Attack.

The enemy has 6HP and 7 Armor.

They roll an 11, so it becomes a 13. The enemies armor negates 7 points of that damage, turning the attack into a 6 which is just enough to kill the enemy.

Of corse you don't have to make note of an enemies armor or other stats it may have; but it's a pretty simple system I'm happy with.

Giving your character non-combat stats like Intellect for solving puzzles can also be considered.

This also allows you do do inventory for your characters which I recommend since it's an MMO and what's an MMO without loot and a little micro managing.

Say you get a mace that gives you +3 attack and heals you by 3 for each 3 you roll during combat.

My two cents on that:

1. Lilac is already set up to be an excellent IC mouthpiece to deliver "you're a dipshit and are going to get us all killed" warnings. By contrast, Takeshi can also serve that purpose since anything he thinks is a GOOD idea can logically be deduced to actually be a BAD one.

2. Death is nothing more than a setback in this setting from a practical standpoint. The only time I could see it legitimately causing major buttfrustration is if we were like ten feet from the next hub town and Dickbutt ganks us out of nowhere sending us back to square 1.

As for that specific hypothetical I could see "sacrifice our lives to give the villagers time to escape" being a legitimate plan if we really felt like going Full Paladin, not that I think we would with this character though. Not dying when we're killed means that death and success don't have to be mutually exclusive as long as the conditions for success don't hinge on "make the enemy dead before he makes you dead".

I think our character might still be operating under the assumption that it really is still a game to some extent, our internal monologues haven't changed much.

That, and we saw people die during the little mini-riot when Takeshi killed the Lever and the town guards went apeshit, so the fact that people still respawn may have just been glossed over since us players all know it anyway and making a big deal about it would just be rehashing stuff covered in the first episode of the anime.

Item crafting still has level requirements and ingredient requirements.

Mamare has said that making modern weapons has a requirement above the in-game level cap.

Shiroe's contract to turn Rudy into an adventurer was made using a bunch of ingredients dropped by raid bosses that aren't in the game anymore and required pre-expansion max level in his sideclass to even attempt it.

Same for Chefs if they attempt to cook food that has passed their level cap they just ruin all the ingredients.

Yeah, that bit is pretty important. If it were VR then nobody could really be blamed for assuming that it was just a sweet new content patch that had horrible unintended consequences.

It's also kinda interesting to consider that back when it was a game (or more accurately, before the game-world and the real Elder Tale world got smashed together into one with magic, which is probably what happened.), 1 real-world hour counted for 1 in-game day so characters belonging to older players who had been playing for a few years are actually centuries-old heroes with Lander records of their exploits stretching back for generations.

And then one day (from the Lander perspective) every Adventurer suddenly woke up and stopped being the monster-killing economy-stimulating archtypical heroes everyone knew and loved and instead turned into a roiling mass of panicked computer gamers with superpowers.

Sadly, while the technology may be there to pull it off, the videogame industry really has no interest in big hyper-ambitious projects simply for the sake of doing something awesome when they can keep doing what they've been doing for the last decade and maintain their income stream.

Not to mention the fact that after a steady stream of "WoW-killers" that flopped because they couldn't possibly compete with Blizzard's unlimited development bucks or established userbase (the most important thing in an MMO), most companies are pretty content to just let WoW have that entire section of the MMO market and make their money elsewhere.
