"Target." You say calmly. You squint as you do mental trigonometry to figure out distance. "Distance twelve-sixty. Partial cover. Crosswind six nauts West." Long distance shots are the bane of tankers- past a thousand yards there are dozens of things that can affect a shell's trajectory- windage, relative elevation, ambient temperature. Hell, even things like air pressure and humidity could affect the shell's drag and therefore it's ballistic drop. Modern tanks have computer-aided targeting systems that are largely able to control most of those variables and allow more accurate shots at distance. "Bringing you on target." You say calmly as you hit the commander's override on the turret controls. "On target."

You are Commander Russells of the M26E1 Pershing Heavy Tank "Black Jack" and with late-WWII era sights, most of what you have is training and hope. And your gunner, Rose, who responds evenly. "Target acquired." She tends to count for a lot. "Firing."

Aside from the sound of a Ford V8 engine rumbling and the whine of the turret servos, the turret was silent. And then Rose hits the trigger and your world rocks backwards and up under the counterweight of a 90mm HVAP shell leaving the barrel at nearly four-thousand feet-per-second. The tank isn't even done rocking before your eyes are glued back to the scope watching the HVAP shell arc delicately towards the target and impact The cardboard cutout- roughly the size of a Tiger II's front profile.

>Take another shot- finish the target.

FUCK THE POLICE
>>
So it turns out the reason that this is so quiet is because captcha is borked. Woo.
>>
>Move to the next firing position.

No reason to assume Erika is going to be kind enough to stay put while we kill her.
>>
"Richard." You say, squinting at the tiny, gleaming hole in the paper- you can barely see it under magnification. "Can you bring us back to that little hill we went over? About... Grid two-two? The steep one we had to brake down..." You pull back from the periscope and look down at Rose. "We had line of attack from there, right?"

"That's close to two-thousand yards." She says, her tone is neutral but you've known her long enough to know incredulity and doubt when she's trying to hide it. Richard, for his part dutifully puts Black Jack in reverse and gracefully spins the tank to head for the new firing position.

"But line of attack, right?" You keep your own tone light- Rose is good- perhaps in the top percent of gunners in the world. You've got know doubt that if she'd had a competent crew and had been dropped in the middle of World War II, she would have a dozen rings on her barrel. But today you won't to take her to the limit of her abilities and find out just how good she was.

Two yards is a long-shot- historically most battles were fought at less than half that distance. You're not even sure that the T54's HVAP round would have enough energy at that distance to penetrate.

>Keep going- Rose can make this shot.
>We're not sure that we can even penetrate at that distance- why try?
>Other.

Also, it's still kind of funny to think of them in Japan using yards instead of meters.
>>
>>31551521
Well, they *are* Americans, so yeah. I ribbed Jack about it because he said 'knots' (well, 'nauts') instead of meters/feet per second and he said something like 'fuck metric'.
>>
>>31551585
It does make sense. It's just gotta be a bit awkward with the rest of the team on metric.

But yeah fuck metric.
>>

What do you have against sensible measurement, BJ?

Why do you hate good things?

Fuck your sensible measurement. I'm American- My president is black and my tanks are olive drab, nigga.

Liberia. And Burma.

Those are your contemporaries, BJ.

Well Liberia has freedom right in the name! Sounds like an awesome country. And Burma has buried Spitfires and pythons.

Don't get uppity, I know for a fact that you Commonwealth types only use metric in official settings.

I rest my case.

It takes some time to get to the hill- the steep incline that you had to progress down would've been impossible to get back up- but eventually Black Jack stands tall on top the hill, cannon angled down at the target area. It takes you a bit longer to estimate distance this time, especially with the elevation. "Target, partial cover. Distance..." You bite your lip for a second before giving the estimate. "...Twenty-Two-Hundred. Windage..."

"...I've got it." Rose says calmly. "Quiet." Again the turret is deathly silent as she looks down the sight. You can see her breathing- long, slow, controlled breaths. After a second she shifts, getting a more comfortable firing position. Her hands work the manual elevation and traverse gears ever so gently- her changes so minute that you barely even hear the moving parts scraping against each other.

"Rose?" You ask quietly.

"Quiet!" She hisses- it seems like the only part of her that moves is her jaw, the rest is stock still. You move your eyes back up to the scope and then you see the moment she's looking for- the wind dies down for only a second.

"Firing." Black Jack speaks and you watch the shell fly outwards- you can just barely see the target, but you see the 90mm's thin trail leading straight through it.

You swallow- it seems even the engine is a little quieter after that shot.

"Hit."

All the armour in the world means nothing, victory is decided by who sees who first.

Rope in the other teams for another paint match!

This. Another paintball round will help, not just prepping for Erica, but helping everyone stay in the zone. Without hacking off the mechanics by doing needless damage to the tanks.

An hour later, you're walking Miho home. Ever since her sister's disapproval of you, she's seemed a lot more aggressive- far more willing to be openly affectionate towards you. For once she asked if you'd walk her home, instead of bashfully accepting your offer. You shake your head- "Two-thousand yards..." You sigh in disbelief. "I wouldn't have believed the shot if I didn't range it myself- that's a long shot for a modern tank, but she did it with seventy-year-old scopes and manual gear traverse..."

Miho lifts her head off your shoulder and nods. "She's amazing. If she were Japanese, Kuromuromine would've picked her up in a moment..." She smiles a bit- there's a hint of malice. "That's why they'll lose- Kuromuromine and Erika especially are too obstinant- they refuse to adapt, they just refine the same old strategies and tactics. To be fair, their biggest rival have never really challenged them- Pravda has always been about finding and using a bigger hammer." She smiles looks at you and smiles. "They aren't used to creative elegence."

>"Elegent? Not exactly a word I'd use to describe my crew."
>"What about Kay? They've won the the tournement before, right?"

You laugh a bit. "Elegant isn't exactly the word I'd use to describe my crew." You say with a smile. "Or Black Jack. Or how I fight." You stick an arm around Miho's shoulder and give her a short hug. "Don't forget why we're on this team- we're bruisers. The tanking equivelent of blunt force trauma." It's true- as far as you could tell, except for a few Pravda's heavy tanks Black Jack has one of the deadliest weapons in Senshado- and your job was to put it in a position to do as much damage as possible.

Miho accepts the hug. "You're direct. You don't mess around with complex strategies. You don't try to outmaneuver your enemies or show how much smarter you are. You don't need to." She looks down at the ground. "It's simple- you find your foe and you beat them. That is the heart of elegence: Purity and simplicity."

>"I still say we're bruisers."

Elegance through simplicity huh? Not quite what I'd have called "elegant"

>"So, heard anything about that party?"
>"So, how's the new main gun on the Pz.IV?"
>>
You shrug. "We're still bruisers." You mutter, before deciding to change the subject. "So, how's the KwK40?" You ask brightly.

"It's amazing! Very accurate, much flatter trajectory." She nods and smiles enthusiastically. "Thank you so much for finding it!"

With that reminder, you practically feel your big toe throb with pain. "No problem..."

"Can't wait to use it during a match!" She fawns. "Flatter trajectory and higher velocity means Hana will be even more accurate with it." She smiles. "She's really come along as a gunner, too!" She looks down. "I was actually a bit worried about her for a while- when I first met her I didn't think she would have the enthusiasm to make a great tanker." While not as downright morose as their driver Mako, Hana always had been very quiet, especially compared with her more outgoing friend, Saori.

You laugh a bit. "Roy was the same way- Total opposite of his sister, really." It smile as you remember back years ago when the crew first started coming together. "He was really sort of... Awkward. Didn't have many friends, mostly hung around the library reading books." Of course, you were awkward too, but for the reason of being the new. "Me, Patrick and Richard found him while we were researching Black Jack- he was the nerd at the library that knew where all the books were..."

Miho nods, listening. "And now he's your loader. He seems to have come out of his shell!"

"Well, he's got a girlfriend, finally." You shrug. "Guess hauling around fifty-pound shells all the time helps." You bring up your arm and flex your comparatively flabby arm. "Yeah, I shouldn't have done that..." You grin. "Anyway, being part of a crew, riding a tank... It changes you. I mean, it's not just Hana and Roy- look at Yukari and Mako!"

"It's confidence..." Miho says. "Thats why it's been so popular as a sport- it builds poise and confidence in women." It makes sense- nothing makes you feel bigger than riding near-on fifty tons of armor, gun and bad attitude.
