Welcome to Academy City. The time is lunch, the weather is air-conditioned and the date is August 8.

You are Kyril Torikov, ‘Level 2’ Telekinetic Child Error and you are sitting around at a fast food joint. A lot of people were surprisingly willing to cede their seats to you since you were expecting company. It was the wheelchair you were in no doubt. Tolour, your contact at THIEF had asked to meet you here for lunch. It was something you were told to expect the first time he snuck in to your apartment to introduce you to his organisation.

The reason you were here was to obtain some information for Kaoru who had hired you specifically for this task. She, along with Stiyl you suspect, was going to take a crack at a place called Misawa Cram School. Apparently there was an important item there being guarded by an alchemist that hasn’t been too friendly to anyone. If you remembered correctly, Teacher was gunning for him as well. It wasn’t long until Toulour walked in, waving and ordering his food. When he sat down he didn’t look in your eye. Reflected on his glasses was the sight of a girl, or rather her buttocks before your short cough brought back his attention.

“Sorry, sorry, didn’t want to get distracted now,” he adjusted his glasses, “Now, did you have something to talk to me about?”

There was no need to talk business just yet you think. Toulour doesn’t disagree and you both start consuming your burgers and chatting of smaller things.

“How are you feeling?” Toulour asked as you popped a pill.

“Nothing a painkiller won’t fix,” you answered.

“That’s good. I guess I should congratulate you on handling Big Spider,” he adjusts his glasses, “Though I think making their ex-leader gun down his own gang was a bit overkill.”

Your expression doesn’t change as you washed down the fries with a soda.

“That also means we open for application,” he just can’t stop fussing with his glasses, “You’re welcome to try for that when you feel up for it. I’d wait until you’re at 100% but that’s just my opinion.”

“The doc said a week or two,” you finished the rest of your meal, “Now on to business.”

“As you wish,” Toulour seemed finished as well, “I thought you’d have some job lined up.”

“Yeah I’m going to help some friends get in to Misawa Cram School.”

“Heard some weird stuff was going on in there,” Toulour looked pensive, “Nobody else is gunning for it as far as I’m aware so you’re in the clear here. Was there anything else?”

“I’m going to need some blueprints,” you continue.

“Well since you’re an Independent Associate we can only accept money as payment,” he then lists a sum.

It was definitely affordable. With the doubled pay from Kaoru you’d still make a profit.

“You’re sure you can’t lower the price?” you asked.

Toulour leaned back in his seat to contemplate your question. You weren’t really hoping it would work but it didn’t really hurt to ask. He adjusted his glasses again before replying,

“Yeah nope.”

At least you tried.

“The info is accurate and up to date I hope,” you confirmed.

“Absolutely,” Toulour’s eyes lit up, “With the way that Academy City keeps records we even have the historical blueprints if that’s what you’re looking for.”

“No, I need the latest one for Misawa Cram School for tonight.”

“Working fast I see,” he pulled out a piece of paper, “This has the account info you will transfer the money to. We’ll drop off your goods within the hour once we’ve received payment. It’ll also have the new number you’ll use you contact us.”

You didn’t waste time and transferred the money. Toulour pulled out his own phone after it seemed to chirp.

“Great, payment received,” his fingers wandered to shift his glasses, again, “Do you have any preference where we’ll drop it off?”

“Just drop it off in my room.”

“Right, nice doing business with you. If that’s all I think I want to get going for my next appointment.”

“Wait, before you go, what were the rumours about Misawa Cram School?” you stopped him.

“Rumour has it that all the teachers at the school were involved in some kind of cult and that they’ve been conducting some weird ass rituals. Nothing’s happened so far but it sounds like some Lovecraftian shit they’re up to,” Toulour answered.

“Yeah I can imagine,” you weren’t surprised, “And what about the membership test?”

“I was hoping you’d ask,” Toulour smiled and moved his specs, “Here.”

It was another postcard of Academy City. Instead of some invitation, there was an application form. There were the usual fields like name, age and gender. Of course there was nothing to indicate what the test was all about.

“This doesn’t actually tell me anything,” you turned back to Toulour.

“Everyone says that, figure it out, we’ll take it from there, ciao,” Toulour only smiled and left.

It was probably some kind of code on there. You could figure it out later and tucked the postcard in to your pocket and wheeled yourself out. It was time to go back home.

The time is now afternoon, the weather is sunny and the date remains unchanged.

You find that your books have been delivered home with a note from your doc to tell you rest up. The blueprints for Misawa Cram School were also resting on your bed along with a joke receipt. Kaoru had informed you that she would be arriving in a few hours so now you have some free time.

There wasn’t much reason to study the blueprints when you would be doing it later with Kaoru and her friends later. Briefly you wondered where Sivan was given that he wasn’t sleeping in your room. Thus you decided to read a book to pass the time, specifically the physics textbook. The others were stacked on your shelf telekinetically, except Fowl Gods. That one went in to the trash which you were planning on burning later.

It was a mind numbing and boring slog through the next few chapters. Numbers were never your strong suit in school but you supposed that since your Ability was tied to it, you might as well put some effort. Three hours were sunk trying to understand the mathematics of thermal and fluid dynamics. Honestly, you didn’t think they’d be useful and by the time Kaoru showed up your opinion hadn’t changed.

In her company were Stiyl and Sivan. The former stubbed out his cigarette before stepping in whilst the other hobbled, using his bardiche as a crutch. Kaoru wasn’t looking much too happy herself however.

“Torikov-san, I hope you’ll agree with me when I explain the situation.”

Stiyl rolled his eyes and said,

“I am mandated to use all resources at my disposal and that kid would be useful.”

“And I repeat that there is no reason to involve him at all,” Kaoru retorted, “he is better off as a guardian of The Index.”

It looks like the issue was whether to bring Touma in or not and it looks like you’re the tiebreaker.

Your friend Touma had a hand that somehow managed to nullify powers, and his own luck. For a job like this you thought it would probably come in handy. Stiyl tried hard not to look smug but failed as Kaoru grumbled lightly at the decision. Touma arrived as summoned a few minutes later and you all filled him in on the situation.

“So let me get this straight,” Touma started, “There’s an alchemist who’s taken over a school and has been using it as a base so he could lure vampires in there and kill them. He’s doing this using something called Deep Blood otherwise the vampires would already killed him and your plan is to steal it from him?”

“Yes?” Kaoru answered.

She seemed to not see a flaw with their plan.

“It’s not like we’re trying to kill him here or anything,” Stiyl added, “If we’re lucky he’ll never notice. That’s where your friend comes in.”

“I’ll try, you guys have a plan?” you replied.

“Yeah, with four of us we can split up in to two groups. I don’t know what means of communications will be blocked so we’ll try using both magic and science to ensure Torikov-san has as much information as possible. We’ll pair off those with and without cellphones.”

At least it was a plan.

You weren’t worried about the plan so much as you were worried about Sivan. He didn’t look to be in top form, much like you were. You hazarded that Teacher’s blow to his chest probably took a lot out of him but you didn’t know so you asked him,

“You’re going to be okay there Sivan?”

“I will live if that is what you’re asking,” he replies, “Do not worry about me. I only am slow now because I am conserving my strength for the fight to come.”

You only look at the other two magicians in the room and they shrug. Well if Sivan said that he was going to be fine then you’ll just have to take his word for it. Gathering around your table, the assembled started inspecting the blueprints while Stiyl and Kaoru start literally working their magic. He stacked the floors on top of each other and with a little rune trickery managed to make it a selective 3D map that would focus on spell Kaoru weaved on the entry team. There were several floors and four towers but you all managed to isolate the most important parts through scrying.

Since the job wasn’t going to start until night fell, all of you settled in for dinner that you cooked up with some help from Kamijou. Kaoru, amused at your domestic skills recorded a video of it.

“It’ll be very obvious and stick out like a sore thumb,” you answered, “Of the five of us here right now, only Kamijou-san would not be able to recognise her immediately but it’ll be no problem since we’re going in a group.”

“Who’s Teacher?” Touma was the only one out of the loop.

“He a ‘mortal’ magician from China,” Stiyl told him, “He’s more dangerous than a vampire. I am curious what you right hand would do to him though.”

“Maybe we’ll find out,” Sivan added.

“Yeah no, if you see an old man in a suit and white hair then you fucking run alright Touma?” you warned your friend, “He set himself on fire to catch a vampire in the flames and he wasn’t even pissed then.”

“Right, I’ll keep that in mind,” the increasingly perplexed Touma replied.

“So now that’s out of the way, how’s Sparky?” you continued.

The magicians returned to their meal and started arguing about terminology and vampire nomenclature. It wasn’t as interesting as your question though.

“Actually, I haven’t seen her in like a week or something,” he started wondering, “I hope I don’t though, she’ll probably try to pick a fight again.”

“Eh who knows,” you shrugged.

The time is now sunset, the weather is calm and the date remains unchanged.

You’re still sitting at your table, as the away team approached Misawa Cram School. You could only see because both Touma and Kaoru were streaming video through their mobile phones. As they moved closer to the school you could see dots appearing on the blue prints. They’re still outside though but they’ve stopped.

“We’ve come up to a magic barrier. Looks like there’s been a huge hole torn in to it and it’s trying to repair itself,” Kaoru’s voice came through the phone.

“Well we either tear it down or exploit the gap,” Stiyl weighed in, “Well do your job Torikov.”

Looked like someone went through before your team and suspicion instantly fell on Teacher but of course it could be anything. Hopefully you could take advantage of the distraction and accomplish the mission without even fighting. Thus the team elected to slip in quietly. They arrived at the lobby of the ground floor. A staircase led up to a second floor whilst what looked like a knight in full plate lay dying by one of the columns. There’s a student or two standing by the knight though and when they see your team they wave you over.

“Hey, this man is dying, we need help,” one of the students started shouting, “We somehow can’t get out of here and we have no idea how he came in.”

“Looks like the barrier was keeping the magic side out,” Stiyl commented bitterly, “We may have to get rid of witnesses.”

“There’s no need for that if you can pass off your spells as an Ability,” Kaoru added, “I have a harder time of it than you do.”

Stiyl only snorted as Touma approached the students and the dying knight.

“That goody two-shoes,” Stiyl muttered before joining him, “You two go on ahead as planned, I’ll look after the kid and catch up later.”

“As you wish, let’s go Sivan,” Kaoru started off.

You elect to follow Team Kaoru as they make their way up one of the staircases. It’s the one on the left relative to the main entrance and studying the map reveals that it’s mostly full of offices. There was an eerie stillness in the air though soft clacking could be heard. It sounded like someone or something was typing on the keyboard. If this was a typical office you’d actually hear people communicating, taking breaks or wandering the corridors between cubicles. Not so here, instead only the constant clacking of keys can be heard.

Using her phone to peek around corners, Kaoru asks you describe the picture you see. The picture you got was a bit grim. Sitting slumped in the cubicle was a bleached white skeleton. It wasn’t animated but it was certainly unnatural to be so intact. You described the scene quickly before Kaoru and Sivan went in to examine the corpse.

“That can’t be natural,” Kaoru started, “Skeletons can’t support themselves so neatly like this.”

Sivan only pokes it with the end of his bardiche. Like an illusion was dispelled a corpse flashed took its place. It’s been rotting for a few days by Kaoru’s reckoning and ID in the pocket revealed it to be one of the teachers. The constant clacking sound continued on.

There was no more magic in the room however and you didn’t really get a good look at the mana. Streaming video wasn’t exactly the best for your special sight. That also got you wondering how your mana sight worked through video but you probably didn’t want to go there right now. Thus Kaoru and Sivan continued on inspecting the cubicles.

Like you suspected there were more skeletons. Still inert and unnaturally posed, they would turn back in to a full corpse when Sivan seemingly dispelled the illusion. Along with Kaoru you inspected the flow of magic as the illusion dispelled and came to a grim conclusion. It wasn’t actually an illusion. What you saw before dispelling was the end result of the spell. It siphoned off the life of its victim until there was nothing left. Where that energy went and what it was being used for neither of you could tell but it was definitely not something good.

The clacking continued but Touma’s team had started clamouring for your attention now. It seems they found something on the class room floor but you’d actually have to switch to video to fully appreciate the summary of what seemed to have been a battle of their end.

It sounded like what Touma found was important so you let Kaoru continue at her own discretion. Switching streams you are met with a hallway with splashes of gold coating the floor and the walls. Well, some of the walls were missing like something blasted straight through them. Stiyl drew up on his experience, which was surprising you thought, and concluded that a fight started at the elevator and ended closer to the stairwell. It was like someone tossed a wrecking ball around the place and if the gold was any indication it was probably your alchemist or at least something related. There were two trails leading away, one was a set of footsteps whilst the other was a line of gold. One was clearly the winner and the other was not.

Stiyl was rather intent on following the trail of gold. If it was your alchemist then the chance of striking the final blow was high. Taking him out would allow your team to freely search the school without threat of potential attack. Then again you suspected that this was too easy. Touma for his part was actually concerned that there had already been some killing involved and could only get worse from here.

Kaoru for her part hasn’t found anything of note yet.

The goal here was not the alchemist you reminded Stiyl. Though he grumbled he did agree and the two of them set off after the footsteps. It led them to a floor higher and from the light smell of food they thought it was the cafeteria. As they entered they were greeted with the sight of students laying flat on their backs save for one. The students were still breathing of course and the one that was conscious was attending to them. Dressed in red and white like a miko, you safely guessed that she was probably Deep Blood.

“Deep Blood,” Stiyl confirmed, “Or rather, Himegami Aisa, I’d like you to come with me.”

From the camera you could see Stiyl brandishing a cross on a necklace. It’s also here that Kaoru chose to interject on your phone.

“We found a vampire,” she was panting, “It has broken loose inside the school and I’m chasing it down now.”

Thankfully it was a three-way audio call despite the streaming.

“We found Deep Blood, head across the sky bridge and go up two floors, can’t miss us,” Stiyl instructed.

He then offered the girl, Himegami, the cross in his hand.

“Put this on if you want to suppress your curse,” he told her, “But if you do, you will have to agree to come with me.”

“I can’t,” she spoke reluctantly, “I’m doing this to help someone.”

“Your alchemist friend is a marked man missy,” Stiyl replied, “He’s not long for this world I bet.”

As if on cue the building shook and even you could hear an explosion coming from upstairs.

[1/2]
>>
>>31569937
Then appearing down the corridor was another man dressed in a dishevelled white suit. The edges of his hair were singed so judging from that he probably had barely escaped the explosion. Stiyl turned and brandished his rune cards.

“Kamijou, get her out of here, now,” Stiyl instructed, “I’ll handle the alchemist.”

“Handle me? You’ll handle me?” the green haired suit asked, “You know your predecessors had much more respect.”

Your spiky-haired friend still seemed to be in a daze at the rapid chain of events. If you recall, she could easily kill the vampire headed your way though you’re not sure how. Staying put would let you regroup with Kaoru faster since she didn’t have to chase after Kamijou but you’re not sure how dangerous the alchemist was.

You had the objective in sight and Touma was freezing up like an idiot. Well that was probably normal you suppose. Sitting comfortably back at home doesn’t quite equate to being in the middle of a magical throw down and potentially more unseen dangers. Still you encourage Touma to take the girl and run, though not before taking the cross from Stiyl with his left hand. You only managed to catch a glimpse of Stiyl being flayed alive before being flung down the hall. Whatever the alchemist was planning to do next was interrupted by another explosion bringing down most of the hallway.

Touma had managed to get out of there quickly enough but Stiyl wasn’t in a condition to be moving. In any case, both of you urged Touma on as he sprinted back down the stairs with a bewildered Himegami. Of course the both of them ran in to the Vampire soon enough, the red aura a dead giveaway. With Touma’s right hand hold Himegami’s, the humanoid creature seemed confused about the air and it hasn’t noticed the two of them yet. Sneaking by would probably be good since you don’t fancy Touma’s chances against it going by your experience. Then again you could use Deep Blood.

Quietly shushing Himegami, Touma led her around and out of the sight of the vampire as it started wandering about and trying to pick up a scent. You don’t know if it was luck, or patience but the two managed to give it the slip as another explosion rocked the building. The interval between them was decreasing and you wouldn’t want your friend and your employers around when that interval became zero.

They met Kaoru halfway down the next floor. Sivan was not with her.

“Kamijou do you have the cross?” was the first thing she asked.

“Wait,” he held up the cross, “Where’s Sivan?”

“He fell behind,” she answered offhandedly, “Put that cross around her neck. We can’t waste time here.”

You could still see the dot on the map that represented Sivan though it wasn’t moving and neither was Stiyl’s. Kamijou did as he was told. The plan was for him to reach the barrier downstairs and dispel it, allowing the non-magical students to escape. Kaoru had seen two great balls of fire impact the upper floors of the tower and she didn’t want to know what it was that could damage the building that the Gregorian chant had apparently no effect over.

As the mobile half of the team reached the ground floor there was one final obstacle standing in front of them. It looked like the alchemist if he replaced his arm and leg with solid gold. He didn’t look likely to give way and you had numerical superiority.

It was definitely a clone. You may not have gotten a good look at the alchemist that fought Stiyl but this was a being that oozed of the colour blue. It wasn’t the same yellow aura that other magicians had.

“Touma you’re up, take him out,” you shouted over the line.

Trusting you so far, he finally lets go of Himegami as the alchemist clone smiles wickedly. A wave of gold came out from the flail-like object in its hand. It shone brightly for you given that it was also ringed in yellow light. Touma simply swatted it aside with his right, bringing out a mean flicker jab as he stepped in.

“That’s impossible,” the same voice as the alchemist came out.

It looked like a light tap but the clone, the dummy, recoiled in shock as it sent more and more gold towards Touma who had to actually duck and weave out of the way. Your sight is temporary cut off as Touma puts his phone back in to his pocket. Kaoru luckily still had the camera running and she herself was running along with Himegami towards the exit.

“Torikov-san, I can break down the barrier myself but it will take time that Kamijou might not have,” she spoke, “If we switch out we’ll be able to save more than just Deep Blood but I am not confident in my chances against Limen Magna.”

>Have Kaoru break down the barrier
>Switch out Touma for Kaoru
>Just call for a retreat, job’s already done

“If you’re going to take a while you better get started now then,” you replied.

Without objection, Kaoru got started after handing the phone to Himegami. You trusted that Touma would be fine. With the way he stepped in you’d bet he was a street fighter. His right hand probably forced him to lead with it too, making him a southpaw, like you. Himegami doesn’t talk at all as she turned her sight, and the camera, towards the sky. It looked like a movie with the way that giant fireball was headed down to earth. There was no doubt that Misawa Cram School was its target. There were smaller streaks of fire too as the mass broke apart and impacted the school. You finally understood the magnitude of the explosions that rocked the building. Damn the rules you were screaming at Touma to get out of the building before it hit.

When it did hit, you lost visual but the sound was deafening, almost drowning out your screaming if not for the tinny phone speakers you were listening from. It was a blinding white light and when it all subsided there was only rubble. Himegami, the camera as well as Touma looked to be okay. Kaoru had her Kirpan up in time to shield everyone but you could see that she had some burns here and there along her forearms. Amidst the approaching sirens and the roaring of the fire you could make out another sound. It was a deep throaty sound, halfway between mad laughter and choking sobs.
