A few weeks after slaying the dire wolf together with your comrades Kor and Leon, the three of you finally make it down from the northern territory to the land of the horse lords. The great plains and rolling hills are home to a myriad of nomadic peoples who worship various gods, but none of whom seek violence with a Ranger, a giant, and an island woman. At the edge of the greater forest, Leon sells off the cart in favor of horses, a better mode of transportation on the rugged plains. You pass through unassaulted, and in fact welcomed by a few people you come across. You swap stories and share fires with them, and even get to hear some of the strange tales Kor's people tell on her island.

Finally, after many weeks of travel, you enter the salt plains, home to your city of Lumen. You draw closer with each hour, cutting through the mist of distance until you see the great shining walls. Leon leads you up to the top of a hill and calls everyone to a stop. He dismounts and begins stretching his back.

"Alright, we just have to wait her until nightfall, and it'll all be good."

You hop down from the horse, followed by Kor. Leon sets down in the grass and begins reclining against the hill. The noon sun shines down warmly, feeling so very familiar on your neck. Kor sits beside Leon, and the two of them begin sharing drinks from Leon's waterskin.

You ask Leon to borrow a few of his things, and he's happy to oblige. You dig through one of his bags and find his razor. With a little help from Kor, you're able to chop your hair to a respectable length, as well as use a bit of water and soap to shave down to fine stubble. You're afraid to go for a very close shave with no mirror, bit Leon assures you that you look just fine.

The three of you then proceed to watch clouds until dusk, at which point Leon stands and brushes himself off. He finds his bow and quiver, then asks you to hold an arrow for him. You do, and he splashes a bit of oil on it and sets it alight. You wonder what he means to do, until he sends the shaft high into the air.

"That should do it. Let's get moving." Leon runs and leaps onto his horse, motioning for the two of you to follow.

You and Kor both mount your respective horses and follow after Leon. He leads you on a strange path along the perimeter of the city walls and over to a large gathering of stones that form a curious circle on the ground. Here he dismounts again and approaches. The two of you follow.

Leon begins digging around in a patch of freshly upturned soil and eventually seems to find something.

"Gotcha. Hey brother, mind giving me a hand with this? We're supposed to use a tool but I'm not gonna lie, I lost it. You should be able to lift it though." You approach and Leon points out a metal sort of handle sticking out of the ground.

It's a lot harder to do than you would have expected. You buckle down and put your full strength into it, and soon the handle lifts and with it appears a metal door from beneath the dirt. It opens, revealing a ladder down into a dim light tunnel.

"Good job, man! I knew you could handle it. See you at the bottom." Leon jumps down and grabs onto the ladder, beginning his descent.

There is nothing, but at the same time you feel a nagging in the back of your head that tells you you are looking at the same stretch of tunnel as the last time you turned around. In a moment, you realize it is doing no harm, and strain your neck to see it. There appears little but a hood without a proper face.

You are startled to find as you turn, not the tunnel you were just in, but a small, dimly lit room. Around you are Leon and Kor, as well as Pietra. Over in another corner is a scraggly man with a patchy beard and dirty, bare feet. He smiles as he peels his hand off of a small chalk circle on the wall.

You tell Kor that she's free to come along with you to the palace. She seems exited to see it up close, and together with Leon you head up. Pietra and Maurice stay behind to seal up the tunnel, promising to meet up with you later.

The three of you travel through empty and rather damaged looking streets up to the palace hill. You see almost no one who isn't a part of the church, not even vagrants or people on nightly escapades. When you make it to the palace, you see the same paladin standing guard. The years have been kind to him, but then again he has always had a stern and wrinkled face. He allows you entry, and you make it to the chapel.

Inside you see a few clerics praying in their nightclothes. They don't seem to notice you enter at first. Leon tells you that the bishop has been awaiting your return.

You tell Leon to watch Kor while you speak to the bishop. He agrees, and you begin making your way to the office on the other end of the palace.

The halls are as sturdy and powerful as you remember. It feels quite melancholy to be back amidst such familiar and yet somehow alien scenery. You pass several other members of the church on the way who stop to wish you welcome, and even see some new members who you don't recognize. This prolongs the trip to the office, but is quite welcome if only for the warm feeling it gives you.

You make it to the office and knock on the door. There is shuffling inside. At least she isn't asleep. In a few moments, you are invited in. You see the bishop sat in her chair amidst a pile of charts and ledgers. Far to the side is her brother, who's looking as grey and disgruntled as ever. The bishop runs out from behind her desk and takes you in a warm embrace.

"Welcome back, child! Oh, how we've worried about you since you left. We wanted nothing more than to find you, but we had no idea where to begin, and since the events around here have begun, we can't spare a single member of the church. I hope you'll forgive me."

You ascend the tower with the others. As you do, Kor asks Maurice a barrage of questions on all subjects. He seems happy to answer, at least. Meanwhile, Pietra leans over to you.

"So what's the deal with her? She seems tough, but why bring her?"

You tell Pietra that you owe her for feeding and helping you in the pit for all those years you were gone. You also tell her about Leon's desire to plow the metaphorical field. Pietra laughs, calling the others' attention, which she must then deflect.

You reach the top of the tower, and with the combined clout of you and Pietra, you get past the guard and into a large, circular room. There are shelves full of books and charts, and at the center is a long table. On either side are Leman and Annalise, both looking very tired and agitated.

You leave the others behind and approach the table. You pour over a chart of the outer perimeter of the city, which displays the various stations and facilities within the wall. As Annalise and Leman discuss strategy and logistics, you chime in occasionally to give your input. You're slightly disappointed by how negatively the suggestions are received. This continues until Leman realizes what's going on, followed shortly by Annalise. They both seem to stare blankly at you for a moment. Then Annalise steps forward and slaps you lightly on the cheek.

Leman steps forward and pats you hard on the shoulder. The three years in the pit and the long trip have definitely weakened you, judging by the slight pain you feel. Annalise dashes over and gives you a brief but warm hug before informing you that you smell like rotten wood and dog breath.

"It's nice that you're back, but we've got a lot of work to do before first light. You can wait at the house with Pietra for now, and hopefully we'll be able to talk in the morning." Leman goes straight back to the map and begins toying with some small figurines at his right side. Annalise sighs and joins him.

You scoop Annalise up and carry her out of the room. She lets out a sharp wine as she clings to you. Leman laughs as you carry her out of the room. You enter the stairway and meet up with the others. Pietra and Kor both clap and laugh, embarassing Annalise to the point she resorts to burying her face in your neck. As you pass, you stop and realize something. You tell Kor to look into the room you just emerged from. She seems confused at first, but does as you say. There is a great gasp and a scream as the door slams shut. This is followed by crashing from inside the room. You, Pietra, Annalise and Maurice merely shrug and continue down the stairs.

You come to the foot of the wall. Maurice bids you good night and heads for the palace, leaving you with Pietra and Annalise. Annalise fidgets and asks if you wouldn't mind letting her walk from here.

The three of you head back to the house like this, and get past the guards outside. Annalise hides her face from them, but they seem to recognize her as well as Pietra well enough.

You enter the house and let Annalise down. Judging by how dark it is, everyone must have gone to bed by now. Pietra hooks an arm under Annalise's.

You head off to the bathroom to wash up. Just like the palace, the familiarity of this place couples with the sort of distant oddity of it to create a strange feeling in your chest.

You run a bath and relax for a few minutes, reflecting on the time you've spent away. Things seem to be already settling back to normal, if not the same normal you remember. You take this time to also brush your hair out a bit, to get the scruffiness of the windy road out of it. Once you're washed and scented, you step out and dry off, then enter the hallway in your underclothes. With everyone either gone or asleep, you have no need to cover up anything you don't need to.

You make your way to Leman's room, following memory.

You enter and are hit by the smell of steel and perhaps light cologne. You find the lamp and light it, then have a look around. Things seem more or less the same, with his large elevated bed and racks of exotic weapons. You do notice also that there is something in the corner, hidden under a tarp. You wonder what it could be for just a minute, then feel your right knee buckle beneath you. You can barely stand. You decide that sleep is best for now.

You find a spare blanket that doesn't smell too much like ladies' perfume and wrap it around yourself. You douse the lamp and lay on the floor, quickly taken by sleep.

That night, you have a brief dream. There is a river of black water, running through a valley of blue grass, lit by a full, white moon. The river feeds into the mouth of a great silver and black gate. You spend the majority of the dream sitting outside the gate, with your bare feet in the water. You watch the river run by, and only near the end does the gate begin to creak and crack open. Unfortunately, before you can see what lies within, you awake to a bright morning, and Pietra curled up against you.

You decide that first and foremost on the agenda for now is gains, and you head to the kitchen to fix yourself something.

When you arrive, you are surprised to see a middle aged woman in a black uniform. She's quite shy about bearing witness to your half dressed form, but after a quick explanation, you realize that she is the new housemaid. She offers to prepare breakfast for you, but you decline, letting her get on with more important work. She bows before leaving the room. She seems less rough than her predecessor.

You crack a few eggs into a pan, over a few browning sausages. That, along with two toasted slices of bread with jam make up a filling meal. You bring the plate out to the dining room in time to see Annalise entering. Her hair is messy from her pillow and she is still dressed in her nightclothes and robe. She smiles, bids you good morning, and sits down beside you, snatching one of your toasts.

The streets are more lively during the day, but still there aren't half as many people as you remember walking around. Most of them hurry about their business and get back inside as quickly as they are able. One woman nearly leaves her child behind after he trips, dancing in place as he gets up and chases after her.

Eventually you get to the wall and bypass the guards. One of them asks you to sort out "the woman you brought with you", which you can only assume means Kor. You find her sat outside Leman's war room, sulking.

You pat Kor on the shoulder, and offer her a chance to come in with you. She declines.

"No, I think it's better I stay out here and think about my flaws for a while. This stupid body has caused a rift between us that can never be crossed." You shrug, wishing her good luck, and enter.

You find Leman pouring over the same map of the wall, only now his figurines are spread out along the edges. He grunts as you enter, never looking away from his chart. Once the door is closed, he speaks through gritted teeth.

"It was sure nice of you to bring that woman all the way here, so I could reject her all over again. It's a wonder you can stand this man, Annalise."

"Would you give a chance to a woman with three heads? Don't answer that, because it's no. I'm not into it, man! I prefer, and forgive me for saying it, women like my mom. Classic good looks, more refined style. Her complexion was one thing, twelve years ago, but now she looks like she could rip most of the sisters in steel right in half! "Did you two come here just to piss me off, or is there something important you wanted to say, because in case you haven't noticed, I'm slightly busy trying to keep ten thousand ugly fucking orcs from beating down these gates and burning the fucking city to the ground!" Leman's shout reverberates off of the stone walls. Annalise seems as though she wants to hide behind you. Leman looks you dead in the eye, expecting your response.

You confront Leman directly. This seems to surprise both him and Annalise, as if they never expected someone to attempt to talk back to him.

Leman scowls and prepares to say something, but he holds his tongue. He looks away and takes a few deep breaths, then comes back to the conversation much calmer.

"I'm sorry, this whole thing is just one giant pain in the ass. We don't have nearly enough people, and every time they attack we lose more. We have no idea where they're getting these numbers from either. Look, you just got home and Annalise has been working around the clock. You advise Lema to try to get what rest he can for the time being. He agrees, and both you and Annalise step out to give him some time to think.

Outside in the stairway, you notice that Kor has disappeared. You ask the guards downstairs if they've seen her, but they only know she left a few minutes ago and headed toward the palace.

"I'm sure she'll be alright, she's a big, very big girl. You wanted my attention last night and now you've got it, so lets go explore the town a little. There's a coffee house in the market, and Pietra seems to like it so I've been wanting to try what it is."

You tell Annalise that you feel responsible for Kor, all the same. She agrees, reluctantly, and the two of you go up to the palace, following the clues of people who seem to be surprised an island woman is amidst them.

You reach the palace and pass the gate guard, and eventually find yourself outside the weight room. Inside is the familiar cheering and clanking of metal. According to the accounts of people along the way, Kor is inside. Annalise follows you in, and you spot Kor in the far corner. She has stripped down to bandage wraps, catching the eye of some of the brothers, and sits in a circle of sisters who are impressed by her ability to angrily outlift most of the men in the room. Each time she squats, you can see her temper being tested beneath the immense weight. The sisters cheer her on, making it feel like there is some sort of estrogen wall between you and her. Annalise seems impressed as well, by the look on her face.

You cross the room with Annalise, weaving through the usual crowd of sweaty paladins with varying degrees of body hair to reach Kor. By the time you reach her, she's already moved over to the bench to give someone else a chance at the squat rack. She presses what looks to be at least twice Annalise's weight as the sisters cheer her on. You might not find this odd if she looked like she could do this so easily, but not even the brothers are able to move such weight so quickly without slowing down after a few dozen. Kor on the other hand, keeps going without signs of exhaustion.

You squeeze through the crowd of sisters and get in close enough to speak to her.

"Can you believe he turned me away? After all the time I spent looking for him, he just told me he wasn't "into girls with dark skin or large frames". I spent years doing this to myself to make him happy and he doesn't even care! Stupid, arrogant, weak little man!" The sisters cheer and whistle, alienating the brothers just slightly. "You know what, though? I don't even care. I can have any man I want, and if they don't want me back, I'll just take them! That's what these muscles are good for, right?"

You advise Kor against such a course of action. She scoffs at your disapproval.

"Please, what do you know? The only women you can handle have to be a head shorter than you or else you feel emasculated. That's how all you continental men are." The sisters cheer again. "Back where I'm from, any person is only worth their strength. A man isn't even allowed to look at a woman who can throw more weight than him. But here you're all so insecure that you need your wives to be dainty and delicate!" The sisters begin rooting for Kor, and adding more weight to the bar. Annalise seems nervous.

A) "You're only speaking out of anger right now. You don't mean all this."

"Who cares if a bunch of stupid pale weaklings like me. Do you know how many men on my island would line up to walk on coals just to have a chance with me? A lot more than him, I'll bet."

Soon, she must release the bending bar and sit up to catch her breath.

"It's fine. I don't need him to get my throne. I'll just sit on it, and anyone who has a problem with that can say it to my fist."

"Oh, that's so romantic! Alright then, you two have fun. If you need me, I'll be around town." Kor releases you and dusts her hands.

Annalise leans into you and whispers. "Maybe we should invite Kor to stay at the house too. She probably doesn't have anywhere to go."

You go through every event that you can remember, from the brief stay in the prison cell to the long ride north through the bitter cold. Falling into the pit and the hot water spring that caught you, as well as meeting Kor and sharing mushroom dinners. You retell the occasional battles with the mad prisoners which resulted most often in a few bodies, as well as your futile efforts to escape until Leon's arrival, at which point the story quickly wraps up as the three of you battle the dire wolf and return home. Annalise seems to hold onto every word along the way, asking the occasional question on this or that. By the end, the two of you have covered nearly a mile just walking along.

"That all sounds really exciting. I'm sort of sorry I wasn't with you, but then again I don't know about fighting a beast like that. I wonder if I'd be able to do what Leon does." You pass very few people on the way back who aren't part of the church. By the time you arrive, the house seems to be well lit and lively. The two of you move past the guards and through the gate, then into the front door.

The parlor is full of laughter as you enter. All three of Annalise's sisters are here, including a very pregnant Anastasia.
