>Guard Failed!
>Your Advantage: 2
>Enemy Advantage: 1
You look down at your feet and notice the grenade just a second too late. The explosion sends fragments of metal and ceramic through your body as the explosion knocks your feet out from under you. Reflexively, you push off the ground with your hands and send yourself crashing through the window, plummeting to the ground below. As you fall, you look up to see your assailants chasing after you. Two people, dressed in black, covered in straps, pouches, and heavy padding. Their faces are covered with black masks, and goggles with red lenses cover their eyes.

Today is just like yesterday, tomorrow will be just like today. You've been attacked four times now, all by the same group. You and Claire have managed to fend them off every time, but their relentless surprise attacks have got you on the ropes. Today you were sloppy, and didn't notice how the mall had grown eerily empty and quiet. You and Claire decided to split up, each handling two. You didn't expect them to be this talented with half of their number missing.

You hit the ground, feeling your bones break under the sudden impact. This...this isn't right. You should be able to take a fall like that by now! Not to mention your wounds...You look at the large gashes running through your abdomen and legs. Though the bleeding has stopped, they remain open and throbbing with pain. Those should be healed by now! For some reason, ever since your run in with that Doctor, nothing has worked quite right.
>>
>>31565986
You stand up on shaky legs just as your attackers land, one on either side of you. The black-clad mystery men each draw a blade, roughly the length of their forearm. You know it would be imperceptible to normal people, but you hear a high pitched whine coming from each of their long knives. Before you know it, they've attacked, dashing past you and making quick swipes at your joints. Just like normal, they're not aiming to kill you. Instead, they're trying to dismember you. One of them puts a finger to his ear as you dodge another pincer attack and begins to mumble. He must not think you're able to hear him.

"AIR One showing signs of exhaustion. Request authorization for support fire..."

As if you'll let him! Even though he's engaged in conversation, neither he nor his partner let up, circling around you and darting in and out of your reach. Before his request can be answered, you've got to do something!

You won't let them! You rake a hand across the ground, spinning in a circle. The pavement beneath your fingers is torn asunder, flinging huge chunks of concrete all around you. The men in black swiftly dodge, doing elaborate cartwheels as they weave around your projectile attack. Frustrated, you raise up both hands and slam them into the ground, sending shockwaves through the road. The grey asphalt breaks apart, forming a stone cage around you. Even as your barrier of concrete and tar goes up, you see their short swords slashing through the hard gravel like hot knives through butter. With a roar, you slam your fists into opposing sides of your concrete shield, sending the slabs flying.

Your assailants are pinned against the pavement, being flung with them to opposite ends of the road, slamming into cars, fences, and even other buildings along the way. You don't hear the satisfying crunch of bone or the wet slap of torn flesh, but rather a large crash as their momentum suddenly halts. You don't wait around to figure out what's going on. Using what strength you have remaining, you leap to the top of the nearest department building and run across its surface to the next building ahead of you. You leap from roof to roof until finally you've left the heart of the city behind, stumbling down into your normally quiet neighborhood. With the frenzy of battle behind you, you stand up straight and try to walk normally. You make it only a few steps before you fall over.

Shit, you opened your wounds back up. Why won't they heal...? You fight to stay conscious, but your wounds overtake you. The darkness comes swiftly and without warning.

--
>>
>>31566923
Your eyes open back up, and you're in your room. Bandages cover your injuries, and you can feel that most of the wounds have at least clotted. You turn your head to see Claire staring directly at you with her usual unblinking gaze. Though you should be used to it by now, it still makes your stomach leap into your throat. You try to get out of bed, but you're taken by a sharp pain and are frozen in place.

"Don't rush yourself, darling. You're seriously injured."

Claire rolls off your bed and heads toward your desk. From here, you can tell she's also had her share of injuries. Her left arm is in a sling, and you can see stitches going down both of her legs. She might not heal like a Chimera, but just what could do this kind of lasting damage to her...? Claire returns in a moment with a clear glass of water in her hand.

"Here, Captain. I've brought you a pain-reliever."

Huh? Where is it?

Claire opens up her mouth, and you see two small blue pills on her tongue. Even after your acknowledgement, she continues to hold out her tongue, letting a droplet of saliva fall down on your bed. Does she mean for you to...?

You stare at the pills in Claire's mouth, completely bewildered. From this distance you can feel the heat of her breath and the sugary cinnamon smell of her favorite treat overwhelms your nose. You imagine that her drool probably tastes like syrup or something like-

You feel a pain in your head and you sharply turn your head. What were you thinking? You're definitely not interested in anything that's been in Claire's mouth! You snatch the cup of water from her and take a drink. Forget the pain pills, you should be fine soon enough. You get out of bed, grunting as your torn skin and broken bones remind you of your malfunctioning powers. How did you ever get through life without that healing factor before?

"So, if you two sickening lovebirds are done, can I start my examination? Or would you like to hold hands and talk about your day first?"

What? Void? You see her sitting in the corner of your room, her arms and legs crossed. A dark expression is on her face, and she has an irritable energy to her. You didn't even notice her before now! When did she get here?

"The Chief called me here, you horny bastard. I wouldn't bother checking up on someone with such a fulfilling life as you without an executive order."

You're glad to see that she shows such concern for you.

>You don't need an examination, you'd like to see the Chief first.

>>
>>31567971
>worst pot
Ha, a fucking optimist. If you've read Ellis' "No Hero" you might have a better idea of what's coming.
>>
>>31567774

Oh, you are so not in the mood to put up with Void's sour attitude right now. If she's going to be jealous of you having a creepy stalker, you might as well make her as unhappy as possible. It's not like she'll ever understand how much misery Claire puts you through.

You clear your throat and announce that while you'd like to have your examination done, you'll need a much, much cuter nurse to do it for you. On command, Claire nods and spins in place, mimicking an old show you remember watching many years ago on T.V. What was that show about, a girl who could become an adult to solve problems? Nevermind that, with a brilliant flash, Claire has changed her attire into a stereotypical nurse's uniform, complete with a small cap. If you weren't using this to be an absolute dick to Void, you'd think it was really cute. Even with her arms and legs still bandaged up.

As Claire goes through standard check ups like blood pressure, heart rate, and so on, you make sure to rub how Claire is so much better in Void's face. She's so young and adorable, unlike a certain nurse you know that already has wrinkles and grey hairs at age thirty. Void scrunches her face up, with her features becoming shrouded in shadow. Her fists tremble, and you see her biting her lip. Oh boy, here it comes. You brace yourself for a horrible retaliation but instead, Void suddenly sniffles.

"It's not fair," she cries jumping out of her seat. She runs towards your window, throwing herself through the glass and to your lawn. As you lean out of the window, you can see her running off in the distance.

"You should die! Get ED and die already!"

Huh, that was a bit more effective than you planned. Well, your joke's over so Claire can take off that uniform now. Before you can finish your sentence, Claire is already on your bed, raising her behind into the air.

"Isn't it time for my love injection?"

No, it's time for Claire to get out of your room.

You take the cup of tea Dead Maid offers you. Once more, you find yourself staring down Chief as you report the day's events. For her part, Chief has done little to really change how she does things, except for swapping all her butler servants for maids. You can't say you don't approve of the switch, but you're not really sure how this is really a change in management style...

"So, it was four men this time? With the same high frequency swords?"

You nod. The Chief sighs, putting down her cup of tea. At her side is the latest issue of Heartbeat: Darkness You never thought she'd get that addicted to it. You rarely see her without a copy any more. She puts a hand to her head, then mumbles something so soft you can't even hear it. Then she turns to you and says a single word.

"Strangers."

Stop being so cryptic, Chief.

"The Japanese Special Operations Team. They employ and hunt other Overed and even stranger things. If they're targeting you, then things are worse than I imagined. Listen up, you're not to go anywhere alone until we resolve this."

Fine, fine. You get it. If this is such a big problem, maybe you'll put just a little trust in the UGN to get something done for a change. After all, they should be used to dealing with something of this level, right? It's just some guys with swords, so there shouldn't be an issue. You would handle it yourself, but your powers have been off lately. Not that you've bothered to share this information with anybody. You don't even know what they'd do if they knew you couldn't even bring your claws out.

"It's good to hear that you've finally seen reason, Wild Card. I will see to it that this place becomes an impregnable fortress against those who would target you! Of course, I shall be directly overseeing your protection," Chief begins to fidget,"So, so you will have to stay where I can see you until this is over. Understood?"

Hey now, you didn't agree to that. You don't want to hang around this lech any more than you have to.

"Lech!? Must I remind you again that this is romance! Romance! I am a romantic!"

You stick a finger in your ear, already tired of the Chief's lecture. Every time she speaks, it feels like your ears are ringing. Hm...? Is that actually a ringing? No, it's more like a hum? A whistling? What could that-

The next thing you know, your house is engulfed in flames. A blast throws you off your feet and knocks the Chief to the ground. Before you can figure out what's going on, your arms and legs are impaled by swords, a bag is thrown over your head, and you feel yourself being carted away.

The least thing you hear is the Chief's scream.

The bag is ripped off your head and the bright lights sting your eyes. You try to look around the room, but your eyes won't seem to adjust. You can make out the smell of disinfectant, and the sound of a heavy duty fan. Your limbs have been pinned to the table with some sort of stake. The whine of a tiny motor reaches your ears and you feel sick to your stomach. More high frequency weapons? Overed-level poisons? Then this must be...

"You know who we are, then? This makes it easy. You've been captured by Strangers, AIR One. We ultimately mean you no harm. Will you cooperate with us?"

"Against a Regiment-Class Pureblooded Overed, we could not afford to take any chances. Even with your capabilities being lower than our original reports estimated, you have still managed to incapacitate fifteen of my clansmen and fellow operatives. It couldn't be helped, we needed to implement a swift and decisive strike."

Well, they've soured any chance of a peaceful talk. Just what are they after anyway? What the hell is AIR One?

"Don't play dumb. We know that you've never undergone a reconditioning. Tell us the true purpose of the AIR Project and what your capabilities are."

You snap at them, you don't know anything about some stupid AIR Project. You're a normal guy who was unfortunate enough to catch the Renegade. You don't even work for the UGN! From the darkness, a knife flies at you and embeds itself in your shoulder. The pain is immense, but worst of all, you can feel something seeping into your veins. More poison? Or something else?

"I'll refresh your memory. Our intelligence departments believe that the AIR Project stands for Applied-In-vitro Renegade Project. Shortly after the Renegade outbreak, the United States government started a project to create natural-born Overed with a 100% certainty. When the UGN was formed, the project was immediately shut down due to their meddling. You alone hold the secrets to their research, as their only successful Overed-birth."

What a bunch of nonsense!

"Nonsense or not, that is what you are. We, Strangers Unit 2, have been given the mission to get the secrets from your body. You can cooperate willingly, or you will cooperate against your will. In either event, we will have your secrets."

Looks like these guys aren't willing to listen to any sort of reason. You're still feeling weak, but if you put your mind to it, maybe you could break your bonds. It might be better to endure it for now and wait for a better opportunity, but who knows what they'll do to you in the meantime?

>Break out.
>You just have to endure it.

>>
>>31569716
It wouldn't make us gain encroachment.
It isn't making us feel inhuman, and shouldn't require the use of any Overed powers (though it invariably willinvolve them, regardless).
I agree it would seriously hamper our rate of encroachment loss, however. We wouldn't gain more than normal, we'd just negate less of it.

Not as such. In Captain's current state, sexual relations with Claire could incite a loss of control, which bump up his encroachment. In general, sex=human interaction=good thing.

Captain's suppressing the Renegade right now, but not as effectively as he was at the start of the quest. This is why his powers aren't working, he's afraid of the Chimera and what it could make him do. Realizing that he's capable of controlling it should fix the problem, but that's for later in the arc.
>>
>>31570016
Fair enough. Anyway, welcome to the madhouse.
>>
>>31569985
[So there was a tie between break out and antagonize, I think (maybe I can't count) so we're going to let you do both halfheartedly!]

All anyone in the Overed world does is just talk talk talk, spouting nonsense acronyms and menaingless phrases at you. And when they're not talking, they're trying to kill you and take what's left of your corpse. Well you already put up with enough weird organizations trying to kill you and take your stuff. You won't hand it over to some weirdo wannabe ninjas!

"W-we're not wannabes..."

Shut up!

You roar, summoning up what strength you have. If only your powers weren't so weak right now, you feel like you could do this in an instant, but you struggle to move the stakes out one inch at a time. Each time you throw your body forward, the ground shakes under your strength. You hear dozens of blades slipping out of their sheaths, the soft sound of metal on leather, but it's too late for something like that!

With a final shout, you break free of the table, sending the stakes out in every direction as your bare feet hit the floor. It's cold, and you feel woozy, but you're not going to stay here long enough to think about it. You charge into the darkness, ignoring everything in your path. When you find a wall, you smash through it, feeling your bones turn to dust under your strength. Your arms now swing uselessly at your side as you tumble through this strange place. The darkness seems to creep after you as you run through this new and strange place.
>>
>>31570293

It's old, you can tell that much. Rusted steel and weathered concrete are everywhere. There's a smell of mold, but you can hear the sound of generators and running equipment. Maybe one of the bunkers on the Island? No matter, you've got more important things right now! Ahead of you is a group of soldiers, carrying automatic rifles. Each of them has on a strange mask, obscuring their face. As they take their stance, you feel none of the instinctual pressure that an Overed gives off. Are these just normal humans? You impulsively release your Warding, but as you get closer, you find that they're not moving. What's wrong with these guys?

All at once, they begin firing their weapons in long but unerring bursts, the recoil from their firearms not affecting their aim in the slightest. The rounds penetrate the steel beams and tear up the concrete flooring. These aren't antipersonnel rounds, they're anti-armor! It's only your overwhelming speed that's preventing you from being shot at the moment, but as you approach them, you know you'll have to deal with them somehow...

If these guys won't back down, you won't either. Your strength flows to your legs, and you leap from the floor onto the wall, continuing your advance. As their aim adjusts, you leap to the opposing wall, and then to the ceiling. Your own tremendous speed carries you through the gravity defying action, until at last, the soldiers coordinate their fire to cover all angles. But by then, it's too late. You apply a burst of speed, blurring your form as you appear behind them. To you, it's like they're turning in slow motion. You have more than enough time to leap into the air, slashing across all of them with your extended leg. You catch one in the crook of his neck and drag his body through the others. Though you expected the snap of bone or perhaps a dull thud, you instead feel the unmistakable strength of steel within them, and the now familiar sound of rending metal as you send them into the bunker wall. What? Are these guys made of metal or something?

"My clansmen who are not lucky enough to be Overed have all undergone their own transformations. It seems that even this pales in comparison to a true Overed."

A portion of the wall simply falls away, as if it were nothing more than a piece of cloth. That same eerie darkness swirls about, and a figure appears. The voice is the same as before, so you can only assume this is the Stranger who was questioning you. You struggle not to laugh at her stereotypical attire. Billowy pants, a simply robe, sandals, a mask over her face. It's like she was trying to appear as silly as possible.

"Don't laugh!"

Oh, did it show on your face?
>>
>>31571034

"It's not proper form to do it, but I'll show you that we're legitimate! Behold my clan's killing stroke! Yozora-no-Setsudan!"

Now, you're not good at Japanese, but that sounds incredibly corny...But you don't have time to think about it much. The ninja draws her sword across the air and the light seems to drain from the room. A crescent of pure blackness tears the air in the room apart and rolls towards you in a wave. The air around it is sucked inside, and you can see the ground buckling under its might.

Even as it approaches you, you can feel your skin tearing apart and the very light being stolen from your eyes. You're pretty sure this isn't actually a ninja technique, but it's still dangerous!

You hop in place, getting the feeling back in your legs after dealing with those augmented soldiers. As you bounce from left to right, you immediately notice a large hole she's left in the corner of the room. You thank her for making this easy on you and you derive a small amount of satisfaction from the confusion on her face. In the second it takes for her attack to reach your position, you've kicked up onto and off the wall, closing the distance instantly. She backs off, surprised at your sudden appearance, and you see an opening. Her neck is unguarded, and you're just a few inches away. You unhinge your jaw without a second thought and lean in to-

You shake your head. What were you going to do? Right, that's right. You bring your head down, cracking your skull against hers and sending the imitation ninja face first into the ground with a satisfying crunch of bone. You jump past her prone form and keep moving forward, aimlessly running down the twisting corridors. It occurs to you that you have no idea where you're going, but anything is better than just standing still!

You burst through several more waves of Stranger soldiers, growing more and more weary as time passes. The unflagging stamina that you've grown so used to is just not here, and you're left gasping for breath. But here you are: in front of what can only be the way out. A large ladder is just twenty feet in front of you. It must be the way out of this bunker. It must!

"Just hold on!"
>>
>>31571808

The wannabe ninja appears once more, leaping out of the shadows at the corner of the room. Before you can say anything, she divides into almost a dozen copies of herself, and takes positions up all around you. Each of her copies holds three knives in each hand, ready to throw them at the drop of a hat. And throw them she does. You roll out of the way, weaving between the ninja clones just to avoid being hit. A trail of knives follows the ground, sinking all the way into the hard floor and walls as you just barely avoid being skewered by her hail of steel.

"I won't let you out! We'll finally learn your secrets!"

Are they still on about that? You roll under a clone and make a mad dash for the ladder. If you can just push her back one last time!

[I gotta step up my game]

You won't be fooled by this petty trick! Claire has done this to you so many times in the past, illusory doubles of this level won't confuse you at all. Your eyes immediately lock on to the true ninja, hidden behind all of her clones, at the base of the ladder. You growl, blowing past all the shadowy fakes, taking the knives head on and watching them glance off your skin. You spin around and plant your foot right in her gut, watching all the energy drain out of her as you force the air from her lungs. Before she has a chance to recover, you bring your other leg around with all the force you can muster, flipping yourself over in the process and sending her screaming up the ladder. You hear a dull ringing as she hits what must be the hatch for the bunker, and her unconscious body falls to the floor moments later.

You force your injured arms to move as you climb the ladder. The hatch seems like it's entirely too far up for your broken and battered body, but you force yourself up the distance. Opening the hatch is torture, but when you do, you're met with the open countryside. The Island's mountain is just a short distance away, and the smell of fresh air and green plants is refreshing. You limp out of the bunker and make your way into the foliage. You've got to put some distance between you and these crazies. You never thought you'd be eager to find the UGN...

"In medias res" is a Latin phrase describing a storytelling convention where the story starts in the middle of the action instead of having a conventional expository buildup easing into the action. This arc of DXQ started in medias res because the first thing we saw was Captain in the middle of a fight scene that had started "before" we started reading, facing opponents that he already knew about but we the readers didn't.

Gonna dump this here:

DXR, I feel like one of the big failings of DXQ (also LCQ) is the ridiculously opaque decision points. I can't, off the top of my head, think of a decision which both a) felt important (i.e. plot stuff) and b) felt like I knew what the options did. You frequently give us points points where something important is happening (e.g. confrontation with Arachne), and we know it's important, but we have no idea what the options actually translate to in terms of results.

With the plot decisions, it feels like rather than voting being "solve this problem," it's "read the QM's mind to figure out which option has the result you want."

I hope you found this post at least a little helpful, and I'm not just talking out of my ass and other anons have felt the same way.

Peace.
>>
>>31586721

>>
>>31586721
It's kind of like he asks you to vote on how Captain reacts, rather than asking you to vote about how to solve problems. I don't think he's asking you to solve the problem, because it seems like Captain is going to do something about the problems no matter what you choose. It's just choosing the kind of story you might want to read.

Yeah, the decision points aren't plans of action. They're butterfly ripple effect sorts of things where Captain's split second reaction creates a new chain of events. It is hard to tell what each one is going to mean in the end, but I like that
