You wake in the morning to a face full of hardwood floor. As your nose aches from the impact, you flip over onto your back to see Leman putting the sofa back to rights.

"It's almost ten. Get to the wall on the double, we've got a big day."

You rub your nose and ask Leman what the hurry is.

"The hurry is you were due to report an hour ago, and the enemy is preparing to charge the gates. We need everyone ready to push them back if they manage to get through. Now that you're late, you get to fight on an empty stomach, and you get to borrow the sweaty spare armor."

A) "Alright, I'll be there soon."

You get to your feet and gather yourself. Leman pats you on the shoulder, shaking you a bit.

"I need you out there today, I'm counting on you to help defend the city." Without another word, Leman takes his leave of the house, followed by the two inquisitors set to guard the house.

You head down the hallways to find your comrades. You enter Leman's room, but Kor is nowhere to be seen. You leave it, and try to find Annalise. You come to her room, but find it locked. From inside, Pietra informs you that the two of them are getting dressed. You find it very odd that they'd need to lock the door to put on mail and strap on their weapons.

Annalise is back in her usual combat attire, and Pietra sports a fancy new set of boiled leathers as well as a decent sized belt covered in various containers for who knows what. Annalise seems surprised to still see you here.

"Didn't Leman want you to get to the wall quickly?"

You tell the others that it can wait until you aren't occupied. Pietra and Annalise both sigh, telling you to get to the wall quickly. They run out together, leaving you behind.

You pull on your boots in the doorway and start heading toward the wall where Leman is stationed. The walk takes about half an hour. When you arrive at the base of the wall, you see dozens of other paladins armored and standing in formation in the warm midday sun. Leman walks along the top of the wall, shouting orders to what you assume are inquisitors readying themselves for attack. As you approach, one of the other Paladins, a man you once trained with, grabs you by the arm and pulls you to attention.

"What in the name of all that is holy are you doing wandering around!? We've got three hundred killers posed a mile outside these walls and you're staring off into fucking space!? Get your ass into the armory and suit up before I toss you over the wall myself and let the orcs pick you clean, you lazy pile of rat shit!" He shoves you away toward the tower and the door which leads into the inner part of the wall. You nearly fall over from the force of it.

You pick yourself up and run to the wall. Inside, you find many of the other members of the church, mostly clerics, scrambling to get things set up for the battle to come. Thinking back to your short time on wall duty long ago, you find the armory and begin gathering a suit. There really isn't anything that's just right for you, and putting together something full would take a while from the scraps you've got available.

You spend time gathering enough pieces to make a full set, although they aren't all the same size and actually constrict your movement just a bit. That being said, you feel much safer wrapped up in steel. You even manage to find a helmet, albeit one that smells slightly of sweat. You don it, just as a great crash and boom sound in the distance, followed by shouting and the thunder of footsteps from afar.

The attack is happening now, and you need a weapon.

You move to the weapon rack and pick up the biggest sword on display. It appears rather mundane, with the sun's visages molded into the pommel to help it serve as a symbol. You sling it over your shoulder and make your way out of the armory and toward the inner wall.

When you get outside, you can hear shouting from above as they loose arrows across the fields outside. The paladins gathered before the gate are standing at the ready. You look toward the gate and are frozen into place. The enormous wooden doors have been blown right off the great hinges, and are now burning and singed by hot fire. As you stand staring, there is a pain on the back of your head. You turn and see the same Paladin from before.

You place your free hand on his shoulder and tell him to have faith. He quivers under the weight of your hand, nearly dropping his sword. He stutters, explaining that he's never even held a sharp weapon before. You give him a crash course in which part goes into the enemy, and tell him to try his best to hold his water until the battle is over, or at least until he has enough time to pee on an enemy. This does seem to relax him a little.

Within a minute, the crowd of people has drawn close enough that you can now tell each individual apart. Humanoid people with leathery skin ranging from green to brown, all wielding wooden tower shields and various weapons. The arrows from above continue to rain down as a voice from the back of the group orders everyone to begin marching forward. You follow, or more lead the others forward. Without a gate, the officers seem unsure as to defend the wall exactly. In the past, it served as an effective buffer, but whatever tore it down has made it nothing but a large hole. The few dozen paladins, at most sixty, begin moving forward and out of the gate. The officers at the rear order you to stop, and brace yourselves. The archers above, mostly inquisitors if you had to guess, continue firing, but the wooden shields of he orcs stop most of the arrow rain.

The orcs are now within good earshot, allowing you to pick apart various tones. Soon, you can make out their faces. Finally, their eyes come into view.

You plant a foot on the ground before you and look into the crowd. Some of them seem to look right back. They roar and growl fiercely. Your comrades begin preparing as well, raising shields and spears as well as readying various other weapons.

There is a brief moment when your eyes connect with one of the enemies charging at you. You lock with him, and the world begins to slow down. For that brief moment as he charges at you, and you specifically, everyone else in the world vanishes. All the sounds are drowned out by his roar and your own heartbeat.

He brings a heavy club down at you, which you deflect easily, and then proceed to run him through along the length of your sword. He thrashes and struggles to pull himself off of the weapon. He does, and falls to his knees, clutching the gaping wound in his stomach as it bleeds. The rest of the enemy body clashes with your brothers, driving some back, and falling to others.

You bring your weapon back, and swing it hard, separating the orc's head from the rest of him. As his body slumps and blood pours from his stump of a neck, you move forward through the crowd of his comrades.

For all their size, they have little form or organization beyond simply gathering into a crowd and pressing forward toward the gate. Your brothers join you in pressing back against the enemy, letting the archers on the walls focus on peppering the rest of them with arrows. One of your brothers shouts for you to hold them at the gate as long as you can.

You eventually find yourself doused in blood and somewhere in the swirling crowd of man and orc, battling for field dominance. All around large bodies both bare and armored are collapsed in the dirt. Despite your efforts, the enemy has indeed pushed you back and into the great doorway, hoping to get the last few yards in and spread throughout the city. Your brothers work to push them back, but it proves quite difficult.

Suddenly, you spot something across the field. A single orc, a head or more taller than his companions, is standing tall at the back in a suit of plate and a thick, horned helm. He shouts at the others, wielding a strange rod in one hand and a waraxe in the other. Anyone could tell him as an officer. The question is how to eliminate him.

You cut down more of the orcs as they come, one of them getting dangerously close to smashing you like a fly before one of your brothers raises a shield for you, and the two of you impale him with sword and spear. You tell him you've spotted their commander in the back, and he agrees to help you. Word spreads through the line in a matter of seconds, and soon you are at the head of the charge.

The other paladins form a spearhead around you, pushing away the orcs at the cost of giving them ground and letting themselves be surrounded. This plan is simple, but should it fail the gate will be left wide open. Still, you swallow your fear and call for the charge.

You enter the crowd alongside your brothers, who rush to cover your flanks. They press against the crowd and slay as many as they can. You get through nearly half the enemy formation before coming up against a rather ornery looking fellow with two large axes. He spots you and makes a dash to attack.

You take a cheap shot, and stomp the orc in the place you really hope orcs keep their balls. This turns out to be at least partly correct, as the heavy boot powered by your muscled leg does cause the orc to collapse into a heap and drop one of his axes. You move behind him and stab him in the back of the neck before moving on.

You rush through more orcs, each time trying your best to outfight them if not overpower them. The number of brothers helping you grows thin, and in time they are just about overpowered. You must work quickly now.

You spot the orc commander just a few yards away. He shouts at his troops, and clearly sees you approaching.

You plant your feet and point at the orc commander. All around you there is steel and blood. You point two fingers at him, and call him out. He sneers and sends two of his underlings at you. The first goes for a swing at your leg, but you raise it and bring it down hard, trapping his weapon as you lop of his head. The second sees this and slows, sealing his fate as you impale him and twist the blade, then kick him away. You then turn back to the commander, and motion for him again. He scowls, then throws his head back in an earthshaking roar that nearly halts both armies. He rushes at you with a great wand made from a branch and a monstrous skull.

Still, you continue working to tire and enrage the commander, to better your odds against him.

You can feel his immensity crushing you even as the armor works to protect you. After a moment, the commander rises, dragging your sword away from your grip as it sticks itself in his stomach. You stumble to get up, and he grabs a hold of you. His enormous hand nearly wraps around your head, as he pulls your helm off. You can see him better now, and smell him better as well. You run up to the orc commander. The height difference between you is quite large, but you are determined. You get beneath him and crouch down. You allow all the power of your spell to flow into your legs for just a moment. The orc commander looks more confused than anything, as you rise up and push off the ground, bringing your body up to him. You drive your fist up and into his nose, hitting so hard that it collapses into his face. He lets out a great groan and a bit of flatulence before falling backward and hitting the floor. The smell of him is awful, but his fall is enough to cause the remaining orcs to sound a retreat. You wave him away, and assert that the paladins and inquisitors who are still able of body need to give chase, and make sure the horde doesn't return. Those nearby you cheer at this, despite some of the rear officers vehemently disagreeing. A small scuffle begins, and the officers are left behind as the paladins pull you with them to run after the horde.

You chase on foot, being without nearly enough horses to make them worth it. Soon many of the inquisitors descend from the wall and catch up to you. Armor makes it difficult to move quickly, but with the help of the inquisitors' quickness with bows, you are able to hobble the stragglers and eat at their numbers little by little. The chase last nearly two miles before your comrades are simply too tired to carry on. The crowd slows, watching as on twentieth of the force that attacked limps away and into the hills. Your brothers and sisters sheer, raising a cry to the heavens in thanks for their victory. before you know it, you are swept up by them and carried back to the wall on their shoulders.

Before long the crowd winds down and things settle into a low murmur and laughter. You recall the set Leman gave you years ago, but think it must be long gone by now, if not adorning a hall somewhere.

A few of the sisters make passes at you, but they either mean it only playfully or are corrected, and told of your relationship with "Old Donnel and Anna's pup." You turn them down, and decide instead to return to Annalise's house for the night. The others nudge you and make suggestive remarks, asking if you plan to take your sword to the forge after the battle today.

The brothers laugh and punch you playfully as you split from them and head back to the house.

The walk is quiet, save for the clatter of the flimsy mail you still wear. It's made a bit more interesting by the slight buzz, even as it clears away from the chill wind of the night. You make it back, and see that the usual guards are gone, but the house seems at peace. You enter, and discover Leman sound asleep in the parlor, one boot still in the midst of being kicked off while he dozed. There is a light blanket over him, and a glass of water on the small table in front of him for when he awakes. You wonder who did all this exactly.

You leave Leman alone as he turns on the sofa and head to the bathroom.

When you enter, there is a wafting cloud of steam still hanging in the air. Someone else must have had a bath not long ago, and used something that smells like cherries for soap. You fill a basin with hot water and strip down, washing your face and arms of sweat and blood as best you can. You leave the armor in the corner of the room for now, pulling only your tunic and trousers back on.

You leave the bathroom and bump into Anna. Her eyes are as droopy and exhausted as Leman's as she heads to her own bedroom. She mumbles something about a job and maybe steaks as she drags herself down the hall. Seeing her makes you quite tired as well.

A) Try to get to Leman's room before Kor

You make your way to Annalise's room.

The door appears unlocked now, but there is no light coming from within. You open it and see nothing but a bed with a sleepy bulge beneath the sheets. You speak, but there is no response.

You shut the door and enter the room. As you approach the bed you can hear her stirring and sitting up. You sit on the edge of the bed and yawn, rubbing your lower back to relax the tense muscles. She seems to catch onto this and helps you, massaging your shoulders. You can smell the cherry soap now.

A) "I didn't mean to wake you up. This just seemed like the best chance we've had to be alone like this again."
B) "You would not believe how tough work was today."

You hear her giggle under her breath as she wraps her arms around your shoulders. She places a kiss on your cheek and leans in close to whisper.

You lay down and relax. She presses herself against you and lays her head on your shoulder, pulling your arm around her. This position feels familiar to the point of being quite soothing.

You feel her hand come up to your cheek. She presses her lips to yours, holding them there for a moment before settling back down. She certainly has gotten more aggressive with time. It isn't long before the two of you fall asleep.

You wake the next morning to an empty bed. The sheets are tossed aside next to you. Looking at the sun, it seems you slept quite late. You stand up and stretch out. The barricades will be in the capable hands of builders now, leaving you with the day off unless ordered to do otherwise.

You do some light anaerobics before heading to the kitchen to get some breakfast.

Luckily for you, the new maid is already hard at work appeasing Leman's appetite, and he invites you to sit with him. You accept and you are served a plate of hotcakes and sausage links with cheese.

"I heard about what you did yesterday. Challenging their commander to single combat was a stupid, arrogant, and all around imbecilic thing to do. I'm only sorry I wasn't the one to do it myself."

You try to stay modest through Leman's praise. He smiles as he shovels piles of fried potatoes and eggs into his mouth.

"I'm glad you made it out more or less alright. I can't say the same for a lot of our brothers. The south gate suffered just as bad, but the north wasn't even touched. It seems like their numbers are running thin as well. What's even better is we've gotten word from my dad. He says he's got news, but only the bishop has read his letter so far. The other heads and I are going to have a meeting later today about it. "

A) "I thought your dad retired?"
B) "Well the sooner we can go back to normal the better."

"He stepped down as head, but he's never been the type of person to stop walking around like he's got business everywhere. He volunteered to lead a band to the southwest to find some way to deal with the orcs. Fought his way out with some of the others as they were attacking the gates." Leman seems quite proud of his father's inability to calculate risk. "I doubt the orcs will try again in the next few days, if at all. For every brother or sister we lose, they lose a dozen, and it's starting to show. We have much better medicine and magic on our side, and that's made all the difference. If we're lucky, they won't come back, but I think we should keep en eye out for the next few weeks regardless." Leman guzzles the remainder of his glass of milk and wipes his mouth before standing and belching. "I've got to get back to work. I need to talk to you about something later, so remind me when I've got some time." With that, Leman grabs his sword from the table and heads out. The maid clears away his dishes promptly.

You finish up your meal just as Annalise returns from wherever she'd been off to. She yawns and waves to you as you wipe the last of your food away from your stubbled chin.

"Morning. Did you sleep well?"

Annalise seems glad to hear it, smiling through tired eyes.

"I wish I could say the same. I kept thinking about the wall, I barely got any sleep. Still, now that things are settling down and my dad's getting back, hopefully things will be better. Oh! Before I forget, Pietra took Kor to get some proper clothes this morning. She was really starting to smell like the weight room. They should be back soon, so when Kor gets back tell her she looks good in whatever Pietra picked. Apparently she was really against going out in the first place."

You tell Annalise not to force Kor to do what she doesn't want to just because she smells like powder and iron.

"Hey, it wasn't my idea. I just ran into them on the way here. I wouldn't want to make her change either, but Pietra seemed really excited about it, so I didn't stop her. Anyway, I'm going to get in a nap. Feel free to come in if you get bored." Annalise smiles and heads back to her room. The maid clears your dishes, leaving you free to spend the morning as you like.

You decide that there's no time like the present to get back on the wagon and begin working out again. Hopefully it won't take as long to regain your old form as it did to gain it in the first place.

You stand up from the table and go to the doorway to grab your boots. Just as you reach for the knob, the front door opens. Pietra jumps at the sight of you, and Kor is sulking right behind her. You ask about their shopping excursion, and Pietra shamefully admits to forgetting her money in the house.

"I'm just gonna run up to the room and grab it. Good morning by the way, you look like you slept really well." Pietra laughs as she weaves past you. As she passes around you, you catch the smell of cherries.

1. Wrapping here, already archived so no worries.

2. Easter is tomorrow, and I'm going to have to spend all morning getting the child ready for the egg hunt in the park, so no thread sadly.

3. Thanks to everyone who played, expect another new thread on Friday. As always, details will go up on twitter once they're hammered out.

4. Love you all, hope those of you that care about easter have a good one, full of chocolate and confetti.

Hope you and your kid have a happy easter though. Hopefully one devoid of dark gods and insanity inducing horrors.
