The dead lay upon the ground in the once hallowed city of Alabaster. Creatures dance around as it’s some kind of momentous occasion. The ivory streets that were once bustling are now silenced. You, a figure adorned with a black mystifying cloak, step forward into the devil’s maw.

“Magdalene.” you mutter to no one in particular.

Miasma springs up from your body, swirling into a formation in the air above you. The naked body of a woman. There are no eyes, no mouth or nose. White hair extends down to connect to her pasty white arms. Where the legs should be are cut off at the knees. Her breasts and stomach are only slightly exposed to the outside. The rest of the body is covered up by bandages.

The devils, or as they’re named in this world the “Adrift”, spring toward you without hesitation. They roar, screech, wield their weapons to charge into battle.

Magdalene sits above you, awaiting your command.

You draw your…

>Normally rolls would be averaged but since Magdalene possesses the ability Low-count, the lowest of three rolls will automatically be selected to benefit you.

You pull out your trusty halberd to do battle with the monster in front of you. “Magdalene, destroy them!”

With a cry of anger, your Visage throws herself forward into the fray. The Adrift charge low to try to catch her off guard. The Adrift have no way to gauge the strength of the enemy through their mindless behavior. A lot of the time this is why they end up dead. They’re worse than animals since they don’t even have an active survival instinct. Magdalene’s arms tear through the monster humans like a hot knife through butter. Their remnants fall to the ground along with a long stream of red.

You don’t pay much attention to the devils trying to attack you from the front. You stay your distance, lunge with the halberd when needed and just keep walking. The Adrift circle around you, finally showing some sense of intelligence. They are easily dispatched.

The monsters didn’t pose much of a threat. You take in a deep breath and release. You throw off the cloak since it was already getting pretty stuffy.

Your name is Quinn Redmond. From what you can remember, your mother named you after a famous Archer from the Eastern Lands. The last name was your father’s fault since he made your mother take the surname Your sex, on the other hand, was a bit more complicated than that. You had parts but what exactly did you do with those? You weren’t too sure. All you know is that you were made fun of when you were a kid. Didn’t result in much hate being bottled up since you took it all in like a sponge. That just stands as a testament to your own density.

“Magdalene!” you shout to your Visage, “Let’s keep doing our best, alright?” your voice wasn’t quite feminine or masculine. It was on a fine border that could only lead to the confusion of others as they try to pin that sex of yours.

The monstrous Visage gently pats you on the head for a spot of encouragement. Your black hair gets in the way. Magdalene pulls it out of your face so you look as best as possible when slaughtering the legions of the Adrift.

Which direction where you going to go in now? The castle in the background looks ominous enough. Plus there were monsters everywhere so a battle was going to break out again.

Not that you had to worry considering how monstrously strong Magdalene was.

The archives of Alabaster are sure to have an answer to why these Adrift are here. You leave the crimson roads to go to the Alabaster Archive which is located just on the outside of the large castle. While walking up toward the castle, you put a hand on your head as if you were wearing a fedora. “People come, people go. As long as neither understand the other, the darkness will settle in. The dark is the heart, the heart is torn. I… uh.”

Your Visage whaps you upside the head to stop acting like a tool. You get the message, “Sorry, Magdalene, sorry.” you draw your halberd then walk on without any delay.

There was a large building in front of you. It had columns that supported the front of the grand structure that extended straight up into the heavens. It was a winding tower of knowledge and mystique that would leave any old man awestruck. Fine engravings running up a winding belt speaks volumes of the architectures rich history. “Now I’m a little nervous.” you smile wryly to Magdalene who gives you an encouraging thumbs up. “Alright.” you nod. You walk straight into the building through the broken, ravaged front double-doors.

“Let’s see here.” you mumble while walking along the large bookshelves. “Got it.” you find a book, exactly what you needed, in fact rather easily. The title was ‘Losing Souls’. You begin reading each passage that was relevant to the topic of the Adrift.

‘The Adrift, as we know them, are monsters with many forms. Man can become Adrift, Adrfit can become man. They are a mystery even to the scholars of today. With our understanding of the Miasma, of the Art of Magic, of the unknown in this world. It is becoming likely, incredibly likely that this mystery will never be solved. Many have given up. Many have accepted the fate the Miasma as a fact of life. They have accepted that those with Visage are the only ones who can combat this neverending, ever present threat.’

Accepting fate? That was something you don’t think you’d be good at. Hell, that’s why you’re here to begin with.

‘Visage: Caricatures of the soul molded from the Miasma. As the Adrift can become man and man become Adrift, the Visage are of the inbetween. They are a balance of the Miasma with the soul of the body. Having one is both a boon and a curse. Sometimes a Visage can assume control of the body, taking control of it, causing it to go haywire. Causing them to turn into monsters called the Betrayed. The name comes from the idea that the Visage is a comrade, and when a comrade goes against a friend, what do you call it?’

‘Adrift: The Miasma invades the soul. The soul becomes corrupted. Magic floods in. The body is mutated. There is no hope from there. Even then, if an Adrift doesn’t come from a human body, they can form just from the thoughts, the feelings of people around. If there is intense hatred and there is Miasma around to give it life, it will be given life. That’s how the monsters in this world have come to life. If there is anything to blame on for the Miasma, it’s humanity. All of humanity. Why, by the Gods, do we exist? Why are we destined to be hounded by our own thoughts, our own beliefs? Is there a way, anyway that we can recount for these sins?”

Alright, this guy is really rapping on about how life is hopeless and how we should just commit suicide to rid ourselves from sorrow. How juvenile, you think, while putting on an academic beret from the floor nearby.

“Magdalene,” you look at her, “You wouldn’t… make me a Betrayed, would you?”

To that your Visage embraces you in a soft hug. Really, that was all the assurance you needed. “Thanks for fighting with me.” she floats away while leading you toward the exit. “Oh, okay, I’m coming.”

You follow your Visage out to the front of the archives after the binge.

There’s nothing else for you to do here except head to the castle. Your Visage leads you out into the town where there are more Adrift. They pose little to no threat as Magdalene demonstrates by eviscerating them before they even come close to harming you. If there are any stragglers you simply impale them. The road toward the large, sky-piercing castle leads you to a fruit stand in a bizarre. There are tomatoes there! A bright idea enters your head on how to look more threatening. You grab the tomatoes and start crushing them to dye your cloak red like it’s the blood of your enemies.

You put some on your halberd too! “Hey, Magdalene, come here!” she turns around at your command. Though the idea was to douse her in tomato juice to make her look like you. Except she was decorated in the blood of the Adrift, so there was no need. Oh well, your work was already done for you. “Never mind.” you drop the fruit then pursue on to the castle.

You step onto the courtyard where there is nary a soul to be found. The Adrift have ran from this place because there was something exerting its presence here. The large gateway to the castle had been locked. That wasn’t strange if there were people alive inside of there. If there wasn’t, wouldn’t the castle be opened to the public of Alabaster? Yes, there were people here. Maybe you could have that audience that you wanted?

The ground shakes as you start getting your hopes up. “TTtthhhhh.” there’s a strange sound, like air escaping confinement. “THhhhhhhhhhhh.” it continues. No, that’s not what you think it is. From the ground comes a large cluser of what seems like spiders.

Small arachnids in a cluster. They scurry around the floating mass in chaotic sequence. You pull your halberd up, ready to fight against the creature.

“Magdalene!” you call. She appeas in front of you, ready to fight.

Your Visage disappears into thin air. Magdalene appears above the enemy with a powerful thrusting attack. The ‘bladed’ arm tears into the sphere of insects, causing a few dozen to splash onto the ground like water.

The spiders that were separated from the main body right themselves up to not attack the Visage, but you.

The battle ends as soon as it begins. The vicious Visage grabs the balled up cluster of spiders and starts smashing it into the ground repeatedly. Each time the ball loses even more of its kin.

Smash. Smash. Smash.
The ground goes from a dead gray to a grimy green from all of the spider blood.
Smash. Smash. Smash.

The spiders coming your way, however, are a bit harder to deal with. By gauging the speed of their advance, you think you have enough room to keep them at bay. They go down with one or two lunges each. Not hard to deal with at all, right? Now they’re increasing the speed of their charge.
You back up to keep the same distance from when you were attacking the first wave.

You stab, another dies. You perform a flurry of attacks. One, two, four, eight more go down. A wide sweep kills some more.

“Ahah, you can’t beat me after all.” You do a second sweep. This situation just got a whole lot more manageable.

You peer up to see that Magdalene just finished massacring the Chaos Spider. Now that the stragglers have been defeated and the ‘core’ destroyed, there was nothing stopping you now.

There’s nothing keeping you out of the castle besides that pesky locked door in front of you. “Magdalene.” There’s no need to tell her what to do. The Visage rolls up to the castle gates and pries it open with little to no effort. “Thanks.” you appreciate her just doing that without even telling her too. The Visage slams the door closed behind you to stop any straggling Adrift from entering what should be a heavily protected area.

The inner castle walls seem oddly peaceful considering what’s going on in the city of Alabaster below. The plants are still doing well, still well-tended. In fact, there are actually gardeners on the other side of the area near the main castle entrance. “Hey!” you call out. They immediately panic then run inside to take shelter. Maybe they thought you were some kind of monster? Your eyes meet Magdalene’s face.

Ah, that’s why. For now you dismiss her in hopes that she doesn’t scare anyone while she’s out and about. You put your halberd away too just to be extra safe. You start walking forward while taking in the area.

The smell of the flowers, the assorted colors of the greenery. It’s hard to believe that this place is under the influence of the Miasma.

Now you’re standing in the middle of a ‘protected’ area, free to do what you’d like.

The gardeners were hard at work tending to the garden before you came in through the front door with a start. Guess they didn’t like that too much since you were a strange person with an admittedly frightening Visage in Magdalene. “Hmmm.” I you look at the colored flowers. The temptation to deduce yet another poem arises in the forefront of your mind. It’s there, egging you on.

You do your best to avoid temptation. To avoid becoming a whim to your simple impulses. “Red is the color of blood, of the brood. Blue is the color of zest yet unfounded. Just like the world, turning to dark, turning against the sun. They will continue to grow yet whither in the hopes that they create new life. In that, they alight new strife.” you realize how much of a tool you sound like right now and drop the flower in the garden where it belonged.

“Ahhhh…” you mumble with dissatisfaction. There was something that you were supposed to do in this large, taunting tower. “Oh, uh - excuse me, I don’t mean any harm!” you shout to the gardeners, “My name is Quinn Redmond. A traveler to these parts. I seek an audience with his majesty King Alabaster the XI.” Did that get to them? Did your genuine plea get their attention?

They look out from a crack in the door. Convinced of your words and that you weren’t a mindless Adrift that would attack them, they come on out to greet you with placid smiles. “W-we are very sorry, Ms… we didn’t expect visitors.” there is a red haired maiden with freckles upon her cheeks. She dresses just as a gardener should. Overalls, puffy shirt and a hairnet for some reason. The other one next to her is speechless, nervous at the sudden intrusion.

>”It’s of no consequence. Please, tell me why there are so many Adrift here?”

“No no, I must apologize. Please, let me see the king as soon as possible.” You remember the reason why you came here to begin with. The spreading of the Miasma is coming from a chasm just at the foot of your home village. The village of Orndirk. A place primarily inhabited by dwarves and humans. It’s known for its mining and metalwork which is why its such a well to do place.

“Where the king is..? I’m… sorry but you won’t be able to see him.”

“I won’t?” you blink in surprise. “Is he sick or something? I can probably ask my Grandmother for her soup recipe if he has a cold.”

“Huh?” the two gardeners look at each other. “Well, that’s nice but I doubt that would help. You see, child, he’s not sick. He’s been held up in his study for a long time… and, well, it’s not a good idea.”

Not a good idea? This man is in his study while his city is under attack by the Adrift. This man has the gall to call himself king? “Ah.” you narrow your eyes, “I see, well, that’s sad but I still have to see him. He has to know that his kingdom is infested with the Miasma.” Saying that makes you realize that the castle itself hasn’t been put to siege by the vile mental poison. “That makes me wonder… how come you all are unaffected? I mean, I’m pretty sure these castle walls wouldn’t be able to put something like this at bay.” you take a look around then fixate your eyes back on the freckled gardener.

“Please, child, please return to where you came from. This is no place for you.” There someone goes again. Telling you you can’t do something because you’re young.

There was only one choice here. “I’m sorry.” you say that in a low voice while throwing your foot up into the door. The force of the blow doesn’t even cause the black wooden door to budge. “I just had one desire and you couldn’t even grant IT!” another blow with your foot. The door finally gives slightly. Splinters pull inward from the point of impact, revealing what’s on the other side of the door. “Again, apologies!” The third well placed kick busts through the door, big enough for you to slide your hand in. You do just that to unlock it from the other side. The room you’re presented with now has a nice red carpet, a few cabinets with collective silverware and pictures of the royal family. The two gardeners have already turned tail to find a place to hide. That was convenient for you.

“Now I’m inside.” you mumble while walking around to see if there was anything worth looking at.

Quickly you realize sitting around in this room won’t help you accomplish the task at hand. Suddenly you hear a series of footsteps from beyond the hallway. There were two, three - no four people coming. There was the clatter of armor so of course they brought help.

Damn, well this got bad fast.

Ask them if stopping us from seeing the king is really worth this much hassle.

If they proceed to attack, try to deal with them nonlethally if possible, intimidating them with our Visage. Seriously, this is getting stupid.
>>
>>31607244
Blast em with no face. This shit is ridiculous.
>>
This is getting ridiculous. You have to see the king for everyone back home. Before they get overtaken by the Miasma, before anything bad can happen to them. You HAVE to do something. “Magdalene. Knock them out. We’re charging in. We’re doing playing.” the Miasma works up around you, forming the no-faced woman for a second time.

Sure enough, the Visage understands the intention. She bursts forward down the hallway. She smashes into the gardeners and the knights that were probably meant to apprehend you. Flop, onto the ground they go. You sprint down the hallway, following after your comrade.
>>
“Huff huff.” you strain your breath while navigating through the halls. Through every corner there were other knights patrolling the premises. They got knocked out. Anyone that was going to send for more help? Knocked out. Neither you or Magdalene were in a playing mood right now. There were people counting on you for an audience. For help with something much bigger than them. “KING ALABASTER!” you shout while sprinting down the hallway leading into the central throne room. “KING ALABASTER, I NEED TO TALK TO YOU!” the knights protecting the main gate found themselves through against the columns nearby. Their armor clatters as they fall face first to the ground.

Your Visage busts through the large double doors leading to Castle Alabaster’s most important room. Of course you follow in after her. “KING ALABASTER!”

No, the king isn’t here. That was obvious since the throne was empty. “Where is he?” you question no one in particular. “KING ALABASTER!” no response.

“Ahhhh, that noise.” finally, someone hears your plea. “That noise. That noise.” it’s the fumbling of an old man who starts walking from around the throne. “I’m busy… v-very busy, yes, too busy. Too busy to deal with you… mm yes, go away, go away child…” the ramblings of a madman.

This is King Alabaster?

>”Sir, please, I need your help. My hometown is under siege by a chasm filled with Miasma. You must help me!”
>”What are you? You can’t be King Alabaster, you cannot be the ruler of this realm. You’re just some decrepit old man.”

“What are you? You can’t be King Alabaster, you cannot be the ruler of this realm. You’re just some decrepit old man.” the truth finds its way out.

“Not a king? No, no, I’m no king.” he shakes his head from side to side. “N-no, haven’t been a king for… yes, how long ago was it?... No, too long ago, cannot remember.” he rambles, “Not a king, yes, not a king… why have you come here, girl, if I’m not a king? Scat.” he waves a hand at you. “Get on, scat!” he throws his hand out again.

After coming all this way you get turned away at the door, “No, you have to help me. Orndirk is in trouble. The humans there can hardly stand to live. The dwarves are doing their best to cope… we will not last long. Please, help us!”

“BEGONE, CHILD. THE FILTH OF THE EARTH WILL RETURN TO THE EARTH!!” he screams so loud it grates your ears.

“W-what?” Where did that even come from?

“Sins are sins, yes, sins… are sins. Those who commit them pay. Pay with their lives. Pay by becoming Adrift.” he continues to ramble to himself, “You should join them, yes, you should.” he nods repeatedly. This makes you think of the people that have become Adrift in the city. The strange monsters that have spawned there. The people that have become nothing, hollow.
>>
“What happened to the people in town?” you walk forward, rage seeping into your voice. A hand goes out to grasp the neck of the ‘king’.

“UNHAND ME FILTH.” he manages to free himself, “That’s right. That’s right, you’re filth. They’re filth. All filth.”

The value of life doesn’t mean a thing to this man. “You’re no king.” you grasp your halberd. It’s hard, very hard because your hand is shaking. It makes sense now. The people inside the castle are ‘worthy’, they’re protected because they either serve the crown or the land around here is sacred. People are safe from the Adrift here. The people on the outside, the people in the city were doomed. Transformed. Forgotten. Those spiders that Magdalene killed could’ve been people once before. They could have been nightmares of the Adrift or the people in the castle. Either way there was no way to save them.

This was too much. A king that sits idly by letting this kind of destruction happen. A castle who’s residents sit by to let thousands of others suffer. There was no refuge for your family, for your friends and for Orndirk. You bite your lip. Blood runs down your cheek.

“GUARDS,” the man bellows, “TAKE HER with the trash! Let her sit, yes, let her sit.” the man starts to hobble back behind the throne.

>”You BASTARD!” (Fight in the throne room)
>”I’ll never forgive you for this…!” (Run away into the ‘study’)

“You’re not getting away.” you start walking forward now with your halberd at the ready. “Magdalene.” you say her name. The Visage moves forward to the despaired king. He sets his eyes upon her surreal figure.

“Magdalene…?” he loses his voice in surprise. “The Flesh of the Holy One?” awe turns to fear. “AHh… ahhhhhh!” a scream escapes his mouth, “STAY! STAY AWAY! STAYYY AWAYYYYY!”

“What?” now you’re at a complete loss for words. What exactly is so scary about Magdalene? She’s a pretty warm soul toward you. Toward everyone else, though, she must be the most grotesque thing they’ve ever set their eyes upon. Almost like you, really, when you were a child. Maybe that’s why she chose to help you when she did?

“AHHHH!” his scream gets louder, making you cover your ears.

“Please, stop that…” of course the king doesn’t heed your words.

“YOUR HIGHNESS!” the soldiers run forward through the front gate that you left open. The shuffling of their armor just makes this headache of yours worse. “Stay where you are!” they yell. God, that just makes it worse.
>>
“Tch,” you look to the knights. Back to your Visage.

“It’s her FLESH! DO NOT APPROACH HER! D-do not… do not!”

>”Why are you all so scared of her? She’s only helped me. Unlike you screwballs.”
>”Are you trying to insult her?”

“Why are you all so scared of her? She’s only helped me. Unlike you screwballs.” It’s true, no one in this room has helped you. The king has done nothing but drivel on about ‘filth’, ‘FLESH’ and ‘STAY AWAY’. Not exactly prolific things to be saying when his entire city, the one he should be ruling, should be helping, are all screaming in agony as their lives end with their shift to the Adrift.

The knights do as the king says and do not approach. Plus the knights calling this man the ‘king’ does prove that he’s what you believe. “Oh, excuse me.” a new voice comes from behind the king’s throne.

“Ahhh, Stasia, Stasia!” the decrepit man seems oddly happy to see this girl appear. You take a good look at her. She has short, blue hair that stops just at the waist. A clear face with no scars, no cuts. Her eyes are the same color as her hair. It matches a clear sky. It’s a surreal kind of blue. “P-please, deal with her. She’s ruined my study, s-she’s ruined my efforts! My… efforts.”

“I didn’t ruin anything, unlike this farce of a king.” you snap back with words of your own, “Who are you?”

“Stasia and this ‘farce of a king’ is my father.”

So a princess. Great.

>”A man who doesn’t help his own subjects is a failure as a king, dear.”
>”Stasia? What kind of name is that?”

“A man who doesn’t help his own subjects is a failure as a king, dear.” Magdalene floats toward you to protect you from any possible attack.

“He’s done enough to realize that this situation is quite hopeless.” Stasia walks past her father to take center stage in front of the throne.

“What?”

“Why do you think he is the way he is?” she jerks her head in his direction. “He’s been in that archive for the past month desperately trying to learn how to stop the Miasma and the Adrift from entering the kingdom.” she frowns, “Though it’s a bit too late for that.”

“All.. filth, it’s… all filth.” he ignores everything around him to berate his own hope.

“I suppose the only real problem here was having hope to begin with.” Stasia shrugs, “It’s just the world that we live in.” Is this girl saying it’s wrong to have hope? To think that things will get better?
>>
“I don’t think so. My home, the village of Orndirk… they may have treated me badly as a child.” You remember the bullying. The terrible names they called you. The children were cruel, yes, but the adults always encouraged you. And the children that once insulted you transformed into the Adrift. That’s why you were the only hope. You were twenty-one now. Old enough to fight, old enough to hope, old enough to make a difference. That’s why you were here. “I don’t think ‘not hoping’ is the answer.”

“Huh? Well, it doesn’t really matter if you give up hope or not. That’s inconsequential.” the blue-haired maiden draws her sword. “Right now, in this room, in the present, you broke into Alabaster Castle without an audience, threatened the king and now stand in his throne room with weapon drawn. What do you think we’ll do there?”

“You’ll die.” you mutter, “You will die, I know that much.”

“Ah, you think so?” she smiles a devilish smile, “CORNELL!” Miasma blasts out of Stasia’s back, forming wings of ‘dark’. The wings quickly form into a hulking mass of a monster. No, not a monster, it has a human shape with vaguely defined features. Horns extend from the side of its head and forward above its small black slits that can only be called eyes. A helm of white. Jagged fangs that could sheer skin off of your body with little effort. It wears full body armor with hands that drip its own blood.

“RAOOOOOOOooooooo!” it releases a powerful roar. Yes, that was a Visage. An extremely powerful one at that.

It seemed that a fight was going to start.

“Orthodoxy.” There was no getting through to this girl. If this kingdom had lost all hope - if the rulers were as corrupt as you thought.. what good were they?

“...” Magdalene opened her arms like a loving embrace. The world around began to vibrate. It started to melt away like ice in heat. Slowly it receded to the ground, only to be replaced by the vast imagery of a starry sky. The ground in which you stood was a vast spiraled galaxy.

“This is really beautiful, Magd-” your Visage’s arm goes clean through your stomach. Your eyes go wide as blood rains upon the ground. “AAaghhh, damn… that really hurts!” you groan, “Please, hurry up…!” Miasma starts flowing out of your body into Magdalene’s hand. It feels like your spine is being ripped out from the front of your body. The pain is unbearable but it only lasts a second. “Nnnngh.” you brave it for your comrade’s sake.

When the deed is done, Magdalene wields a very large, very long blade of refined blue energy. “What in the hell is… mmm, it doesn’t matter. Cornell, go!” the hulking monster of a Visage that Stasia commands lunges forward with a roar.

Magdalene's bandages fall to the ground. The Miasma blade tears through the air. It sinks into Cornell’s head, waist, tusks, eyes, mouth and back all at once.

No, not really all at once. Magdalene keeps slashing from your point of view. Your eyes are refined enough to keep up with her since she’s your Visage and no one else’s. How many times has she slashed? Ten-thousand times? One-hundred thousand? The numbers keep racking up. Each time she slashed, a small rip occurred in this personal star space. Your ‘special vision’ that allowed you to see Magdalene's attack of sheer finesse had ended. With it the flow of time began again.

The space around shattered like glass, returning everyone to the throne room. The damage done to the ‘space’ shows up on Cornell’s body. The body cracks like glass. With each ‘crack’ light pours through. His waist becomes nothing but shambles. The large, hulking arms that perfused his own blood fall to the ground like a sack of rock and shatter like fine pottery. The rest of the Visage follows. The powerful Cornell became nothing but dust.

“The filth of the earth will return to the earth.” you place your halberd on your back. “And now-” your eyes go to your hand.

That’s… when they go wide.

Your hand covered in tattered cloak turns a pasty white. It looks like it’s been replaced with porcelain. “W-what?”

Magdalene turns around. The eyeless face now has eyes. The mouthless jaw opens up. “Magdalene?” you take a few steps back.

There was no response from your own Visage. You look across the room to see that Stasia has fallen over with no color left in her face. “Magdalene…?” you look up into her eyes.

Her black.
Her cold eyes.

Her teeth grow.
She grabs you with both arms then pulls you up.

It rains crimson.

“AHHhhh… Magdalene! W-what are you doing? S-stop!” she bites into your shoulder, tearing it from the seam. You see your muscles tangle in her sharp teeth. The bones crunch into a fine dust.

“M-ma…” she continues to eat. To sate her hunger. You see your flesh get torn off bit by bit from your arm down to your waist. “..Dalene…”

At least there is the reprieve of darkness.
No more pain.
Just the relief of the absence of pain.
