Your spear slams into the sand beside you, striking solid stone and quivering as it shatters the rock. The wind whorls around you, natural winds picking up as the skeleton stands to full height with its new arm. Magic arcs from its head to the arm, and it changes, shifting to match the rest of him.

With a smooth, deathly graceful motion, it points its curved blade at you, sand behind him blasting back to clear away from the ruins.

You rise, watching Melodi leading Monica away from the fight. It seems like Monica wants to help, her weapon out, but Melodi doesn't believe she will be any help. With a grunt, you pull the spear from the stone, looking up at your foe.

The ruins, once masked by sand, are now clear. This was once a temple to some Tou Goddess. Broken statues litter the area, low walls frame a large building with a single room. The standing skeleton's free hand gestures at the various skeletons that are scattered all over, then points at you as it takes a combat stance.

Magic whorls around it, anchored in the sand behind him that spins in a small dervish. An arena of flat stone.

You set your spear and launch forth with a roar, feet fast on solid stone. A blast of sand slams into your shoulder, pushing at you like a solid limb.

But you keep going. Five steps away. He raises his weapon. Four steps, you raise yours. Three steps, he raises his hand. Two steps, he points. One step - and the armor around your shoulder explodes out, sand blasting out from under it and making you stagger. And that's when the skeleton steps gracefully and slams his blade through your shoulder.

Pain sears you, making you gasp. This is no slouch. It's not a magically animated skeleton, it's not a construct. And it's strong. With a single motion, he tears out the sword, leaving an ugly gash before he kicks you away, sending you rolling.

Monica has broken from Melodi, and is rushing to assist you, determination on her face as you rise, gritting your teeth against the agony.

With that, she and Melodi flee. Good. You grip your spear tightly, focusing on the magic in the air. Deep breaths. Deep breaths... He points again, sand launching over his shoulder. Your fist, behind the shield, goes to meet it.

You meet his charge, swinging your spear harshly. It strikes his shoulder, which shatters, and continues through his ribs, collarbone, and hip, sending him to pieces. You pant as you support yourself on your spear.

+Annelin!+ Ja'al comes in. +Annelin, I've discussed what's going on with the demon you told me to summon. The thing you're fighting, it's a demon! A new tribe!+

You look at the scattered bones. +They're called the Undead. Demons who wanted more than anything to live. As such, they have supreme control over dead things. Like bones or rotten meat or dead flesh. They're powerful fighters, and they are always in a soulstoned state, controlling the dead thing from within it.+

The skeleton you were fighting seems still now.

+Seperate the soulstone from the flesh it controls.+ Ja'al says in return. +It could be anywhere, and once you start breaking things to find it, it'll probably get wise and try to flee.+

+So I have to keep it away from the other corpses?+

+Yes. Undead typically fight in a location full of bodies that they can take advantage of.+

Again, you look at the broken skeleton before you. One leg, half a leg, both arms, and the skull are intact.

+Is it dangerous?+

+Not in and of itself. But many of these deals work in the demon's favour. Step lightly if you step at all. Otherwise, just... I don't know, put it in a cloth bag.+

When you finally reach the town, the first thing that strikes you is the heavy magic in the air. You cannot place it, but the place is covered in some form of enchantment. It's incredible, and the amount of power required to uphold it must be massive. The second thing you notice is how well-built the town - no, the city is. Organized roads, well-made housing, even fountains and the like.

The Tou, of which you had only seen their diplomat, almost seem to be two races - the tall, strong, beautiful women, and the short, sly, cute men. Youths are covered in downy fur that bounces with their steps, and music seems to play from every corner.

Probably to keep the dancers in beat. You flush upon seeing their outfits, but females stand nearly always in eyeshot, beautiful and graceful, twisting and smiling in the dry heat, wearing shimmering and shining clothes that more emphasize than cover. Monica is flushed as well, but Melodi is grinning from ear to ear.

A Tou male stands there, arms crossed, a smile on his face.
"Ah, the cavalry." he says. "To use your parlance. "Please, inside." he says, opening the doors. You all pile in, and a human doctor immediately begins to tend your wound more closely.

Who is Melodi?

Your bodyguard and helper for this mission - or rather, Monica's bodyguard.

"Alright. So... Security?"

"Security is handled by Miss Sanska." he says, "And her twenty handmaidens."

"Any laws we should know?"

"Nothing comes to me at the moment." he says, "Simply observe your usual laws. Ah..." He pulls out a necklace, three of them. "These will translate our language for you."

"So... Why did you call for assistance?"

"Ah... That matter." he says, leaning on a table. His tail, black and white, snaps at the air as his ears twitch. "It's hard to explain. But you've been told of how we came to become independant, yes?"

"...Yes."

"Our princess is preparing to ascend soon. We fear attack at a vulnerable moment. We value the expertise of one who has dealt with similar matters of security, and we desire your knowledge on the matter. Further... We wish to offer her hand to a suitable human, to show solidarity in times to come. Since no noblemen are currently available..."

+Monica, please...+

+No! I came here to help, not to... to cast away Micheal!+

She sprints out of the room, and you sigh as your wound is stitched shut, touching your forehead. Melodi sighs along with you as the Tou watches her go.

"Good. Now what she's out of the room..." he says, "I'd like you, Mistral, to show me any security holes the palace may have. Would that be alright with you?"

Ah...

"Most of your defenses are magical. By polling me you hope to circumvent them, since I am adept at doing so, yes?"

"In essence. We're serious about that proposal, by the by. If you could calm her down, I'm sure that Miska would love to meet her."

"Sometimes a shock helps." he says. "We knew she would not be happy. I wanted to give her something to remove her mind from things. Micheal's father suggested it."

You release the Tou. "My name is Yan." he says, rubbing the spot. "Everyone plays a part in this job. As we say, 'Chase not the sandstorm, but run from the wind'. The human empire is strong. We wish... Not to anger them. To consolodate with them. To become safe through their strength. Make sense?"

"Very well." he says, leaving the room. You seat yourself. About ten minutes later, he returns with a red mark on his cheek. "And they told me human ladies were quiet and demure." he grumbles, as he passes you.

It's a short walk to the castle, which is majestic. Tall, sleek walls, no windows. One door, no balconies. White and solid, not even bricks. In a way, it is elegant, and yet... Dead. Like less of a building and more of a roof and four walls put together very well.

You are lead inside, and further discover there is a basement, which is secured very well, and live-in staff that never change out unless there is a long and careful review process for the inquirer.

"Yes." Yan admits. "Rakshasas want us all dead. They want to break our people and send us all back into slavery, if they can. 'The natural way of things'." he scoffs. "More than once we've had to drive them off. They summoned demons, and we put up wards. They used illusions, and we made anti-illusion spells on the entrance. They attempted to sneak in, and we removed the balconies. They slipped in with size alteration spells, and we removed the windows. They dug in, and we sealed the soft earths and the boltholes."

He sighs. "And now it's like this. Like... A trap. We don't know what we should do, to be honest. Any way out is a way in, and the princess, may she always dance, can hardly sleep."

You touch your chin.
"Bodyguards?"

"Constantly." he says. "She is only left alone to eat, sleep, bathe, and use the bathroom." he explains. "Even when courting men or women... It is such a sorry state of affairs, and the poor princess, she is ailing. She puts up a strong face, but... We can tell."

His eyes and his words speak of a worried citizen who truly loves his ruler, and his stance is tired. Have they really exhausted everything?

Yeah, we're gonna have to talk with Ja'al on this.
Ask exactly how do they fight the Raks one on one.
>>
>>31605403
Well what the fuck can we do? I don't see us magically solving the problems they failed to solve.
>>
>>31605563
We can check with the demon we just defeated. No doubt he was summoned by the Raks and can provide us info.
>>
>Do you have a training academy where I could ask some questions?
>>
>>31605403
Ask if the Rakshasa are more or less racially united in opposition to the Tou, or if there are more progressive elements within their culture.
>>
>>31605403
'It occurs to me that you spend so much time on defense that you tire yourself out. You can't attack, so eventually you will be defeated. So you need to accept SOME risk, allowing some life and a way to both combat it and strike back.'
>>
"Hm." you look up at the ceiling. "The Rakshasa... would you say they're united in this? No rebels within their ranks?"

"None, I believe. Those in power tend to hold a lot of it. Those not in power tend to be swayed by those above them." Yan says.

...The demon. Maybe it was sent after you, or them...

>>31605713

"What if I could find a weakness in their power?" you ask. "Defending all the time only drains your resources. You need to attack eventually. If I find a way..."

"...We have always been a defensive people. But..." he frowns. "If what you say can be done, we could rally the handmaidens and prepare."

How about a conference between Jaal and Yorick. We ask Yorick questions and relay his answers to Jaal to make sure what he is saying is legit.

"Alright. I'll need some privacy."

You're directed to another room. You sit down, setting the soulstone on the table, and your finger on it. Then you contact Ja'al.

+Well... Okay. Our mission is to gain information. This should be doable... Just be patient. The demon may still be bound, so be aware of that.+

//Oh, hey! You didn't kill me. Fantastic. Still want to make a deal?//

Let's begin with who is ordering him, and how independent he is.
Then have Ja'al walk us on working the main points. Se how much he knows about the Tou-Rak conflict.
>>
>>31606910
>Dominate
No way cutting deals with demons otherwise
>>

That entirely depends on what you can tell us about the Rakshasas
>>

and also

How hard would this be? Ask Ja'al.

>>
Apologies for delays.
>>
+Help me out?+

+Just keep on business. They can't take souls, really, not the whole thing. Memories and skills, mostly.+

"Okay, so... Who is ordering you?" you ask. "Who's your client?"

//Right to the big one! Haha, I like it. I'll tell you in exchange for one memory. I'll give you good details for two. And for a category of memories, like, say, all your memories of, say, Appals, then I can give you the whole skinny! But you choose the category.//

"And what can you tell me about the Rakshasas?"

//Excluding what you don't know - and I'll find out when the deal's made - pretty much anything you could ask! But then again, I can't tell how much you value a memory. So I can't gaurentee satisfaction!//

>I want to know about your master.
>I want to know about Rakshasas.
>I want to know about something else...
>>
Wait, Avalon, do we lose memories forever?
>>
>>31608799
I'm sure there are some arena spars we could do without. Like our first serious ones and all the jitters.

>I want to know about your master.
With details
>>
>>31608858
Yes.
>>
>>31609069
Those are the best ones. I'd rather just jot down notes on what happened between the massacre and becoming a gladiator, and give those up.

Our parents sucked.
>>
>>31609170
We give a few, then we see if Dominate would pay off.
>>
>>31609320
What does dominate even mean in this context?

It's a skeleton rock
>>
>>31608799
>>I want to know about your master.
>>
>>31609808
Beats me. I doubt we'd have a flying skull familiar, or if we could send him into soulspace to do shit. But if we're giving up memories, also trying to have a rock skeleton should be in the cards.
>>
>>31609808
It's raw soul condensed into a stone, so I imagine it would involve exerting your will over the soul
>>
>>31610319
>>31609808
>>31609320
I'll explain, then. Apologies.

Domination is enforcing your will over the soul in the stone, with your own. Succeed, and the demon must obey you until you release it. Fail, and it takes a portion of your soul. It is on a 1d100. Strength of demon determines your DC.
>>
Nnnnnope, we already lost a limb, not putting up with that.
>>
>>31610557
Come on, what good are memories of our childhood to use now?
>>
>>31610643
they define our character and identity for fucks sake
>>
He's twerp level, but I guess it's a bit much if we don't get to weaken it with demonology or whatever.

Still going for boss details question. Give away spar bullying or amateur fights.
>>
Voting absolutely no on memory-selling.
>>
Question, would say our memories of some specific rare food or fruit we've eaten once or twice count as a 'category of memeories'?
>>
>>31610758
Dude, he only trades in memories. Our other option is Domination.
>>
>>31610530
is there a way to get back that portion of our soul if we did try and failed? and relatively, we've not much to compare how strong this demon is

if we do sell a memory, I'd say only two for details and no more, and they've got to be innocuous memories we don't cherish or need/want, like something bad we did when drunk years ago or something similar
>>
might need to do a vote on how many/ if we give any memories to get consensus and then if we do, what we get in exchange
>>
>>31611016
Yeah, I'm not really in favor of giving him any memories, but dominate is too risky.

I doubt he knows much about an impending attack anyways. You don't exactly tell your enslaved cannon fodder all your grand plans.

Lets just table this for now and talk to Monica
>>
bump
>>
"It seems too steep a price." you finally admit.

//Well. Then there is one last option. Contract me to be your servant, Miss Whoever-You-Are, and for the low, low price of a fragment of your soul, I will be duty bound to help you in any way I can!//

+That's true. Those sorts of contracts are ironclad, since your soulbit maintains ownership and can... Well, ruin them if they do not comply properly.+

//Still. I should probably warn you.//

"What?"

//You don't exactly have a helluva lot of time.//

"Why?"

//Because I was told to finish crippling the defenses by evening tonight. Took me a whole week to wipe out that temple and strip it clean, but I managed to keep the fact hidden until the last moment. Pretty masterful. Never thought they'd hide the focus there, so far from town, and so badly guarded.//

And that's when all the magic you had been feeling in the city vanishes in one fell swoop. //Yeah, so, about that contract? I can take payment plans~//

Thanks for the thread Avalon, liking the new setting and can't wait to see how the Princess and Monica get along, any idea when next thread will be?

IIRC we brought some potions and healing stuffs did we not? Now might be a very good time to use one to ensure we're good for whatever is coming.

That you did. Everyone assumed it was bandits on the way there. Melodi was distracted, Monica was too worried.

well hopefully the 'palace' has a bunch of strong males to help magic up a defense while we protect the princess and work on killing whatever demons try their luck with our spear

The palace is a fucking fortress, so we should probably consolidate forces there if we are against a bunch of magical illusion spitting tigerdudes. We are also going to magic eye fucking everything and everyone, as well as look at everyone's hands.

Furthermore, if anyone is either missing a hand or has a magic armor hand like us, treat them with extra suspicion.
