You have split your drones and scattered them throughout the area hoping to find valuable resources and food. The main force has been dispatched into the dense jungle to the south of your mountain hive, while the other two groups followed the river to the shore to the west, and the mossy plains to the south of the jungle. The rain makes the way muddy and difficult, but you hope it will be worthwhile.

Deep in the jungle your drones discovered another one of the strange bi-peds, gravely injured but still alive, and you have ordered him taken back to the hive. Your drones load up the unconscious creature and the corpse of the predator it had slain and prepair to make their way back.
“Broken.” A drone states plainly, starring at its limp leg. The drone was grazed earlier by the bi-ped’s lighting gun, and now the leg is no longer functional, but shows no sign of injury apart from a small burn along the carapace. The drone will be slowed down by the injury, and likely expose the rest to attack. You could leave the drone behind, or even order it to be consumed, or is the worker worth the risk?

Miles away your other drones report their findings, and await your command to progress in their investigation. To the west at the shore your drones have found an ocean covered in a strange, orange colored film and to the south a flat plain of moss. Has the Queen it is your will that will determine their actions.

"Broken." Your drone repeats the thought as it tries in vain to move its leg. It will surly slow down the rest, and may attract predators.

Hm...
>1 Consume drone
It's a first batch, after all, yes?

>Investigate shore next.

Also, do we pick research options now? Or no?
Nice map also. Helpful
>>
>>31608746
yes, first batch, and yes, you can select your research now, but it will not take effect until we get all the drones on the same page. Technically, they are all doing their things around the same time.
>>
>>31608673
Awesome. Nice to have you back, QD.
>Consume the worker.
It's just one worker, a First Clutch at that.
>Investigate the shore
See if the film is useful in any way

How do we go about research? I'm assuming we can only do one thing at a time for now since we only have 1 thinker?
>>
>>31608582
Alien biology

We need to be able to live in this place before we start dealing with the other visitors.

>>31608673
>Consume the drone +3 nutrients -1 worker
>investigate the shore
>>
>>31608808
Ah. Then I wish to study Alien biology then.
>>
>>31608812
correct. The tinker will analyze the item you want researched, and will need 1 worker to use as a tool to handle the item.

In the future, more thinkers mean faster research, and more things can be researched at once.
>>
>>31608808
>>31608812
Consider that I also vote for alien biology. We'll probably want to the lightning gun next, to further offensive/defensive capabilities.
>>
>>31608860
How much to new thinkers cost?
>>
>>31608874
We'll need to find a source of metals and other things to fashion into new guns. I doubt we can make space lasers out of dirt and fungus even with all the research in the world.
>>
>>31608884
Worker – 5 nutrients to lay egg 2 upkeep per day, 2 days to hatch.
Warrior – 10 nutrients to lay egg 5 upkeep per day, 4 days to hatch.
Thinker – 6 nutrients to lay egg 3 upkeep per day, 3 days to hatch.

Sorry, I had meant to add that to the pastebin. Which I also forgot to post. I kinda rushed home after Easter dinner.

Hm...that should be one priority we have next. Research is super important.
>>
>>31608673

Investigate the shore
Research the lighting gun
Has there been any discussion on what kinda of queen were going to be?
>>
>>31608962
Might want to rush a Warrior. If it can pull down more than 5 nutrients per day by hunting, then it's worth it.
>>
>>31608993
At least one, yes.
>>
>>31608582
Research alien biology.
Hatch 2 warriors.
Hatch 2 thinkers.
>>
>>31608988
Not peaceful. No diplomacy.
>>
>>31608962

We already have a Thinker. If anons wanted to make 1 or two more I'd be find with that (I want to find a way to get more yield out of our fungal-jelly thing...or generally improve our nutrient income). I tend to side with this anon (>>31608993) that warriors are probably a better investment at this point though. As well as 'updating' our workers, so to speak.
>>
>>31609100
We can recycle 10 workers and hatch 10 more. The second wave will be more useful.
>>
>>31609100
Indeed. I'd like at least one warrior, 2-4 Thinkers, and then focus on drones for resource gathering.

Sound good?
>>
>>31608673
"Worker help hive!" the worker exclaims with glee, as it drops to the ground, at peace with its purpose. Its brothers assemble around it and with their claws quickly dismantle the worker, devouring it entirely.
The ocean stretches far into the horizon, much farther than your drones can see with the rain impeding their vision. A worker walks up to the thick film slowly, and with an outstretched claw pokes the substance. It is surprisingly resilient. With a more forceful jab the film is punctured and a thick brown-red ooze bubbles up from the orange growth. Satisfied of the safety, your workers begin taking samples in the shallow water, and discover the film is nearly two inches thick in some places, and contains a thick membrane of syrupy juice. Under the membrane tendrils of dark green strands stretch deeper into the water, like roots.

>Take samples back to the hive
>eat some of the samples
>write in
>>
>>31609152

Have one of them eat some of the samples, and take samples back to the hive regardless of the results. Poisons are just as useful as food.
>>
>>31609190
Second.
>>
>>31609123
>>31609139

I'd approve. 2 warriors though, they're expensive but I feel like 2 warriors supplemented by workers should be able to take down any threats we'll face in the immediate future. Also, dat redundancy.

Anyone think we should dam up the stream so it doesn't leave our mountain (and we can develop reservoirs of the nutrient-water)? If I were a curious organism and I noticed a red-tinged stream (like we did when we came here), I would follow it to its source. Which is where we've made our home.
>>

Thirding.
>>

>Eat the film

But yeah, this guy: >>31609329
Juice, roots, film.
>>
>>31609291
>juice
We've had good experience with that.
>>
>>31609329
It is probably the exact same substance.
>>
>>31609291
Juice first. If the juice is toxic, there's no way in hell we're going to be able to test the other two now since they'll get covered in juice during extraction and we have no way to clean them on site.

If the juice is poison, we'll just have to grab samples of the other two and test them later.
>>
>>31609359

But the water in the stream was red, and this water is brownish. The fungal masses producing both of these are very different as well.
>>
QD, next time you probably want to post the pastebin in your OP, makes it easier for us to find.
>>
>>31609291
Have 3 drones eat them all. Don't you want to be sure of their effects? Drones are so expendable. It is worth sacrificing them to learn even the smallest thing about something.
>>
>>31609395
If all three drones eat all three, then we have no one to bring samples back.
>>
>>31609395
Drones are a resource we need to carefully marshall until we reach the mid triple digits.
>>
>>31609367

This unit of the collective makes good points. I concur with it.

>>31609421
I think we assigned 5 drones to each scouting group.
>>
>>31609291
Your drone scoops up a lump of the thick syrup and quickly swallows it. It tastes sweet, and slightly spicy. After a short while you sense no ill effects and command another drone to do the same with the roots. They are stringy and salty, and seem to hold no nutrition at all, likely they serve as anchors for the film, or as a way to collect food in the water. You command a third to eat the film itself, and the worker begins to hack and wheeze as the surprisingly dry substance breaks into powder in its mouth. You wait a short while, but the worker reports nothing abnormal.

Something is off about it though. You are unsure as to what, but the thoughts from the worker feel strange, as if they are on a delay.
>>
>>31609505
Dropped your trip?

But: great, a narcotic.
>>
>>31609505
>Delay
Hm...drug of some sort, perhaps. We should take a sample to a thinker to look it over, maybe?
Either way, we have found a nice source of nutrients.
>>
>>31609530
this is me
>>31609530
You are uncertain. The worker detects nothing wrong, but you feel its senses distorted, and your control diluted.
>>
>>31609580

Very good, bring back samples of all 3. The powder sounds like it will make an excellent stiptic powder.
>>
>>31609567
>Hm...drug of some sort, perhaps.
How about we take a sample, present it to the biped once we begin to figure out how to communicate to it.
>>
>>31609505
They won't be eating any more of that.
>>
>>31609597

Styptic* oops.
>>
>>31609505
Your drones gather the samples, pinching them into the crevices under their blades.

Meanwhile, on the mossy plains your last 5 drones spot a number of objects in the misty rain. They seem very large, and your drones can feel their lumbering footsteps even from here, but the plains are open and there is no place for them to hide. You know there are air born predators in this area, if such a creature were to attack you doubt your drones would find cover in time.

>move in and investigate, it is worth the risk

How large is "very large"? What's the scale in relation to the captured biped?
>>
>>31609738
Hm...Follow the tree lines. Would provide a way better scouting territory.
>>
>>31609738

Return to the hive, we can search the area later with superior drones and some warriors.
>>
>>31609804
It is difficult to say at this distance, but it must be many times its size. By the trembling of the ground from their movement, your thinker estimates nearly ten feet in height.
>>
>>31609738
You decide they are far enough from home, and recall them back to the hive. They begin the trek around the jungle, and by the time they reach the shore your drones have finished collecting their samples. Your drones reach the hive entrance soon enough and present their findings to you and the thinker, placing them in separate locations to be analyzed in more detail.

New research options
Study samples - medium, may offer new source of food, or offer warning of toxic chemicals

>switch research
>continue research

You look upon the bi-ped's broken form. Now that it is in your hive and away from the spores, it appears to be breathing more regularly. Its legs appear damaged, but the bleeding has stopped for the most part, and pieces of its suit have become swollen and rigid around the areas of the most critical damage. What will you do with it?

>>
>>31610150

>Switch research: Study Samples

>Carve out a cell to hold it.
Station 1 worker by the cell. Of course its weapons has been removed, right?

Consume 10 first-gen workers, hatch 10 workers, 2 thinkers, and 2 extra-heavy/fighty warriors.

Assign 9 (one's guarding the human) to create reservoirs for the Nutrient-water to flow into, and try to dam its flow out of the mountain.

Also
>Stick to walls of hive
God that shit is so alien. I love it.
>>
>>31610241
of course. The bi-ped's lightning gun has been taken away for later research.

You have 19 workers and 1 thinker available and 155 nutrients.
>>
>>31610150
>>stick it to the wall with your workers' saliva

It's injured, it won't have the strength to escape the hold.

Also, that suit sounds like it's got some fancy damage-reactive protection going on. We can strip it from him and see how it works. Maybe if we evolve it on our drones, it'll provide them with temporary injury negation.
>>
We need to hatch thinkers so we can just research all of this at once.
>>
>>31610150
>continue research
>carve out a cell to hold it
The cell can be used for other things later as well

Let's hatch>>31610206, because >>31610241
is a bit much, we won't be able to sustain them.
>>
Let's hold off on hatching anything before we make sure new food is safe.
>>
>>31610345
We need nutrient income to support the thinkers or they'll all just starve at the start f the next cycle.
>>
>>31610392
We will have enough. We have 150 in reserves.
>>
>>31610401
He means sustaining. We don't have the income to support researchers for too long. Our bank is all we have.
>>
>>31610150
You order your workers to take the bi-ped and, grinding up several mouth-fulls of stone, quickly encase the creature's limbs and torso, embedding it in a rock-hard cocoon attached to the wall of your cave. It may still take some time for it to wake, but you will figure out what to do with it when the time comes. For now, you must grow your numbers.

19 workers are idle. Thinker bonus lost due to research.
155 nutrients available, net income 2

What kinds of drones do you wish to create, and how will you delegate work to your current workers?
Your hive is currently little more than the single cave of your throne room, with three caves leading out and to the mountain side.
>>
>>31610300
Multiple thinkers = multiple research projects going on?

I say we birth at least one more thinker and some workers to help the thinkers with research.
Set a thinker to examine local flora, then we get a farm going on and plenty of nutrition to lay shittons of eggs for anything we desire.

Alternatively, we research the lightning gun fully, to the point we can create biological versions of it, and we hatch some augmented warriors.

Then we eat roasted millipedes year-round.
>>
>>31610474
I don't think we will able to evolve biological versions of conventional technology. To build things like the lightning gun we will need industry and metals.
>>
>>31610453
>Workers
Head out to search anything we have yet to search with our workers. New food sources, especially.

>New workers to create
None, YET. I want us to have a healthy income before we make anymore drones.

But...
Can we eat all our workers, and then remake them without losing anything?
Also, let's dig out a section of the cave to be our 'granary' if we need such a thing.
>>
>>31610474
Think of each thinker as a little autistic research point, which you can assign to any project independently, or combine them to research more quickly. They can also operate drones on your behalf if you are too far away, or don't want to be bothered with them.
>>
>>31610535
Actually, one addendum: Add ONE thinker to our hive
>>
>>31610453
Warriors would be nice.
We are kind of vulnerable.
>>
>>31610453
Create 3 thinkers and 2 warriors.
>>
>>31610453

2 Thinkers, 2 Warriors.

I like this proposal up here for actions: >>31610241
>>
>>31610535
eating a drone will give back about 75% of the initial cost to make it. For workers you will get 3 each.
>>
>>31610590
Hm. What is the benefit of remaking them? Tougher? Faster? Anything like that? Or do we not have any good mutations yet?
>>
>>31610453
Worker – 5 nutrients to lay egg 2 upkeep per day, 2 days to hatch.
Warrior – 10 nutrients to lay egg 5 upkeep per day, 4 days to hatch.
Thinker – 6 nutrients to lay egg 3 upkeep per day, 3 days to hatch.

Send 16 workers out in the forest again. Tell them to look for edible flora and potential game.
3 workers keep a lookout in our cave system, one for each entrance.
We can birth a few warriors and thinkers in the meantime. We'll consume our first clutch workers later so that we have nutrition for our warriors and future workers. Not sure how many to make just yet.
>>
>>31610608
If they die we can recycle them.
>>
>>31610608
your current workers are cheap and relatively weak. New workers would be stronger and more effective, and you would be able to alter them prior to laying them.

It should also be noted that drones have no upkeep prior to hatching, so if you lay any now, you will only need to feed them upkeep after the incubation period.
>>
Hatch 10 drones. We will consume 10 of the first wave when the second hatches.
>>
>>31610649
So, at least laying them is a good idea, because it means we can save a lot of time?
Nice...I like it. Let's do that.

Also OP, I don't think we'll agree. Perhaps call a vote for the most logical choices?
>>
>>31610588

Seconding this for consensus.
>>
>>31610453
It seems we have a few more focused ideas

>replace all workers (lay 20 workers, eat the others when they hatch)
>replace some (how many)
>lay 1 thinker
>lay warriors (how many)
>>
>>31610723
>replace all workers (lay 20 workers, eat the others when they hatch)
>lay 2 thinkers
>lay 2 warriors
>>
>>31610746

Seconding.
>>
>>31610588
>2 Thinkers, 2 Warriors.
That's a total cost of 30 nutrients over three days for the two thinkers and 60 nutrients over four days for the two warriors. At a combined total cost of 90 over four days, it'll significantly eat into our 150 nutrient reserve, dropping it down to 60.

If we were to spend ninety nutrients for workers, we get 10 more workers over two days and use them to more quickly enhance our nutrient collection process, build out the hive and create some basic camouflage/defensive structures.

>>31610584
That would be an expenditure of an additional fifteen, which we could use for one more worker. It might be good to have another thinker to double our research capacity.

Basically, what I'm saying it, let's think about getting the most bang for our buck. Instead of focusing on specialized units now, let's build up our resource intake and infrastructure over fifty percent more quickly by adding ten workers.
>>
>>31610723
>Lay one thinker
>Lay one Warrior
>Replace 10 Workers. Have this half stay home to help around the hive, and scout, while the rest head out for deep scouting (suicide mission basically)
>>
>>31610723
How about a vote for work distribution, too?

>>31610746
Pretty much this.
>>
>>31610723
>replace all workers (lay 20 workers, eat the others when they hatch)
>lay 1 thinker
>lay 5 warriors
>>
>>31610723
>>replace all workers (lay 20 workers, eat the others when they hatch)
This is not doable.

We have 155 nutrients. If we lay them all twenty, we'd spend 200 nutrients, knocking us down to -45. If we can go below zero, we would recoup 57 back by eating our current workers, leaving us at 12 nutrients. Then we'd have to pay upkeep on the workers that just hatched, knocking us down by 80 nutrient to -68.

We'd be roundly fucked.
>>
>>31610763

I'm sorry, but I don't understand your math.

20 nutrients for the 2 Warriors, in 4 days they hatch and start costing 10 nutrients per day.

12 nutrients for the 2 thinkers, and in 3 days they start costing 6 a day.

20 workers will cost 100 nutrients, then 40 a day in two days. However, we'll get 57 nutrients from consuming our 19 first-gen workers.
>>
>>31610763
>>31610820

In these posts, people don't know how into math.
>>
>>31610826
I thought we paid upkeep starting after the eggs were laid, before they hatched to reflect incubation, nutrient intake by larval state drones. That kinda thing.
>>
>>31610820
Did you make sure that the upkeep from the first clutch is converted into the upkeep for the workers?
>>
>>31610858

We pay the immediate cost for laying eggs, then there's a period when they incubate where we pay nothing for them (this has been stated repeatedly), then we pay half the initial cost per-day as upkeep.

Only Queens and other very complex bugs (maybe a few specials) have a larval stage.
>>
We have enough. We will send the warriors and our workers to kill those beasts in the plains. They will yield a nice amount.

We should send 2 workers north and 2 workers east to scout.
>>
>>31610723
>replace 10 workers, hatch in 2 days
>lay 1 thinker, hatch in 3 days
>lay 1 warrior, hatch in 4 days
It's looking like this is the consensus, for a cost of 66 nutrients initially, and a rebate of 30 in two days for a total of 36. (this is probably more math than there needs to be, sorry.)

This sound right?
>>
>>31610943

I thought this got support: >>31610746

Or at least replacing all of the workers.

Nothing has been decided on so far as actions for the workers while they await death though.
>>
>>31610943
I am okay with that, since it was my vote. We can always make more later, I figure.
Time to crown a knight
>>
>>31610960
Hmm, your right.
recycle all workers (100, rebate of 57)
lay 2 thinkers
lay 2 warriors
total cost, 75
>>

Go to suptg, search the tag "hivemind" to find all the previous quests.

There's also another series of quests under the "hivemind" tag that I frequent. They're very good, but they're very much the 'hardmode' of /tg/ civ quests and probably don't make good beginner fare.

Seconded
>>
>>31611133

I approve.

3 on guard duty (1 for each entrance), split the work evenly between the remainder.

Let's build a reservoir for the stream. I'm sure our workers aren't drinking constantly, so we're likely missing a ton of possible nutrients right on our doorstep.
>>
>>31611133

A reservoir will likely not offer a sizable increase in nutrient income, but will offer a more stable source of water in the event of drought. The jelly is the main source of the nutrients, while the water is, well, watered down.

Organic doorways can also have some eyes on them, allowing us to keep watch on the outside like they're cameras. We could even give the doors camouflage, to keep our nest better hidden.

>>31611364
Instead of a reservoir, we could always just create honeypots. We live on a planet that constantly goes from hot to cold, right? Droughts can easily happen, and we'll be prepared with honeypots keeping our nutrition from expiring.

Your drones receive their commands and embark on their duties. They split up into teams as you begin your work. Your eggs are placed around you on the soft pile of mold, each carefully placed with love and care as you manage your growing hives activities.
It is not long before your guest awakens. The creature twitches in the cocoon, but to no avail. It whips its head around, wide-eyed and shaking with what you suspect is a fight-or-flight response. It seems to have trouble seeing in the dim light, and it takes some time to notice you, at which point it begins to scream. Your head shifts to meet its gaze, your face engulfing its field of vision. You are unsure if the creature knows you are sentient, but it is clearly frightened, how do you proceed?

Do we have any method of speaking at all? Or just soothing clicks and whistles?

In the mean time, gesture "Shhh..." to it too.

you do not have vocal chords, you communicate through telepathy, but this creature does not seem to have the biology to receive your thoughts.

You can make chittering sounds with your mandibles, or perhaps a hissing sound if you tried, but you have never given it much thought before now. It seems like such an inefficient way to communicate to you.

The creature quickly looses its breath and begins to gasp, emitting bursts of terror filled whimpers in between coughs. You call for a worker who quickly arrives, in its claws is a small bowl of stone it had carved from the room-to-be it came from, filled with water. You take it and hold it out to the creature's fragile looking face, and watch as it quickly goes from terror to confusion. The creature starts making a strange, rapid cawing sound as air escapes its mouth in short bursts.

Eventually it accepts the water, choking on the first gulp as the strange taste hits its senses.
"Y-you're....intelligent?"
You give a courteous bow, officially greeting him into your domain. He starts making the whooping sound again, louder this time.
"I can't believe it! You understand me?"
You give another nod, clicking your mandibles for emphasis.
"a-and, you're...not going to eat me or anything?"
You must admit, you had given it thought. Probably for the best not to mention it though.
"O-ok, well this is-AGH!" It screams again, only briefly this time, as it shifts its weight. "This is great and all, but... could I get down. I need to get back to the others."

Its face scrunches up for a moment in, deep in thought. "Y-you didn't see another one of my kind, did you?"

did we at least remember to give some of our new children the ability to speak the language of these ugly bipeds? this was heavily discussed last thread but not mentioned when you laid the eggs

also, cut it down, its legs are broken and it can likely be convinced to not make the suicidal trip... and it doesn't know where it is, and we can follow it to its hive and locate it (lucky they don't have telepathy) if it somehow does find its way back, but honestly it will most likely just sit here due to its injury.

You grow closer, your blades unsheathing from your forelimbs. He jerks back in his cocoon and lets out a small yelp and in a swift motion you slice the cocoon open. The bi-ped drops the short distance to the ground, legs buckling under the weight.
"Ghah! My legs, I think there broken." The creature adjusts a device sewn into the sleeve on its arm and the legs inflate rapidly, then constrict into a form-fitting tube. A small cylinder emerges from the sleeve and is quickly jabbed into the neck. As the strange series of self-repair procedures come to a close it turns to see that you have scrawled a crude map of the forest, with the mountain marked at the top. You point your forelimb to the drawing as you look into the bi-ped's eyes. The message seems clear.

"Right, you show me yours I show you mine." With a finger it quickly scribbles a circle due east of the jungle. "We have a camp here, not too far from where the life boats from the Clarke came down, but with far fewer predators. We had scouted up into the river not too far from here but we never found any sign of intelligent life. Shows what we know."
You chitter your mandibles inquisitively.
"Uh, right, what I was saying before. We were on a patrol, surveying new systems for colonization. We were ambushed by a fleet of apples and...well I doubt you would have met them. In any case, they have been fighting with the Union, that would be us, for a while now. Our ship was destroyed and our life boats fell here."
An interesting story.
"Oh!, I almost forgot, I'm technically not allowed to handle first contact, but the tech guys give us all these things to hand out to new species." With a flick of the wrist a small tablet emerges from a sleeve and is handed to you.

on the one hand, i want to withhold that info and make it think we are native, on the other hand their thinkers will likely figure it out.

Their inability to contact their kind is a boon to us. we can get info but not vice versa. we can determine whether an alliance is better after learning more about their enemy. Or if we want to kill them all and study whatever tech they have here

a vocalization specialization would make a worker much less efficient. Bio bomb. although I was thinking of it not as a weapon but as a way to keep our secrets should something try to dissect it
that is, it can start a chain reaction that would dissolve its insides and destroy all genetic and structural data. either intentionally or if killed.

OHO! the fungus, the one that was utterly nasty to bite into? it must be a defense mechanism against things eating it, is our control over genetics good enough to replicate whatever it is that it is producing to make our flesh taste foul?
It could deter predators (then again, the cost of that is inability to recycle... unless we produce specialist recycling drones that detox)

I Like the self-dissolution. It is unlikely to suffer life threatening injuries in service as a diplo drone that weren't meant to kill it. Also, such a gland wouldn't be as difficult to make as you'd think.
>>
Are we going to make the Talker more humanoid-ish for the purposes of not making them all scream and freak out thinking it wants to eat them?

Even if we don't we need to make sure to have it observe the bipeds and determine what physical characteristics make them feel non-threatened. Can't make them do what we want if their first thoughts are "OH GOD BUG MONSTER!!!!".

Meta as fuck, but big eyes and round heads with fluff/hair on top would go a long way if we can make it not look too much like a creepy doll.

A worker breaks off from the never ending line of shifting stone and takes the device. The small tablet lights up immediately as the worker carries it away. To look over properly.
"Queen! Thing is key! Many numbers, makes sounds and symbols."
You look it over through your worker, it appears to hold a series of very basic tests, one involving color coded patterns, another displaying a series of exponential number sequences, and another that seems to test memory. Upon completion the device displays a series of images that seem to represent the bi-peds.

humans have living cells that are "unattached" to the rest of the body. males manufacture sperm cells in their testes, white blood cells are alive and are single cellular things, red blood cells are produced by bone marrow (and consume their own genetic code and cellular machinery to increase their efficiency; so they only last 2 weeks or so).

Basically, have it able to "shed" an eyeball and then grow a new one, and the shed eyeball has legs and telepathy to it.

It would be easier just to make spy drones and send it towards the Talker drone, whom we will know the location of at all times.

I think we should cast a vote

ok, final form Speaker drone
vibrant colored carapace
vocalization organs
no back adaptation
standard legs
extra dexterous arms
no blades
standard antennae (sensitive to sound)
special: self destruct. enzyme rapidly digests body upon death

final cost 6 to lay, 3 upkeep. 2 days to hatch.

>>31614931
eh, I am the original suggester of the idea (the detachable thing, not the carrier of seperately hatched drones refinement) and I voted against it when I saw how it would come out as well as said "it would probably be too expensive" in a reply to myself
This was brainstorming rather then a debate since there weren't really sides. just people refining each other's ideas and accepting when they are wrong.

there is little to be gained by killing it, while sending it back would create significant good will and allow us to milk more info. even if we end up killing them all after we finish getting all the info we want from them (since they cannot communicate it to the rest of their species).

honor, family, tradition.
that being said, sepuku is the pussy version of harakiri.
Harakiri is splitting your stomach open and dying over 2-3 days from infection. Sepuku is splitting your stomach open and then receiving a mercy beheading by a friend or a loved one to spare you the pain and suffering and giving you a clean death

>>31615118
I guess the only danger left is if they by luck disable the part of it that receives telepathy, yet not kill it, leaving it comatose.

You lay your latest egg, a special son born to a unique purpose. It will be your voice to the 'Humans'. With the device the one known as Ryan Lee gave you you have learned that it is known as a 'he', and that their kind have only two casts, male and female. To make up for their bleak genetic heritage they seem to have adapted artificial devices to supplement their bodies. You still feel that altering the body is a more direct and efficient rout, but you can only assume they have some problem preventing them from doing that.

"Ugh..." Lee grimaces at the new egg as he adjusts himself on the floor.

>give him the egg

oh, their suit contains some interesting tools and we saw a torn discarded suit where its companion was killed and eaten by the predator (it didn't eat the suit), we should have a drone carry it back to hive for study as well. (and perhaps there was another gun there as well)

Keep him in the hive until the egg hatches, after attempting to ascertain if he will be able to live that long.

If he won't live that long then give him the egg and have a couple workers (at least 5, because this place is hella hostile) take him to his camp. Leave him outside it for them to find though.

It seems to do several things in a specific order
1, test to see if the subject is sentient
2, display a series of math equations to convey basic biological appearance, and basic terms
3, display language information (written and spoken) using math as a universal decoder ring

He has also told you the location of his settlement. It is extremely unlikely that they know of your existence, or of his situation.
>>
>>31615423
His survival isn't that important, actually -- if he dies, it's not like we get blamed, and we can attempt diplomatic contact again.

However we should scout out a more precise location of their camps to the east.

Well don't necessarily devalue his survival. It's 'important' in so far as if we lose him we lose a significant boon.

His death carries a high opportunity cost, is what I'm trying to say.
>>
>>31615486
>His survival isn't that important, actually -- if he dies, it's not like we get blamed, and we can attempt diplomatic contact again.
true, but if he survives we appear more friendly to them then we really are. and they are more likely to share info with us.
torture, betrayal, and revealing info under duress is a foreign concept to us

Lets write for him that we want him to wait a few days for the egg to hatch for proper communication, and for him to take it with him back to his camp.
>>
>>31615326
You notice his discomfort. Such a shame it must be to have such a soft outer layer. A worker arrives and vomits up a gooey glob of mucus and quickly molds it into a mat for him to sit.
"Uh.... t-thanks..." he says as he scoots himself over and slowly lowers himself onto the soft bed. "Oh god, I think it's seeping into my trousers..." You are unsure what 'trousers' are, but at the very least he seems to be in less pain. "So....does this mean I'm stuck here for a while? I mean, it's nice and comfy here and all, but if I don't get back they will start to worry about me."
You take out your blade and trace into the dirt a circle. You then sketch out another circle next to it and trace a ring twice around the first.
"Ok...pictionary, I can do this." He stairs at the scribble for several minuets until you click your mandibles in impatience.
"Ok, ok. Two something.... two orbits, you years!"
You cover your face with your claws. Even across species you feel shame on his behalf. This must be why he said he was not permitted to do "firt contact".
"Oh! Two days. Ok, that's cool."

Can we study the human corpse and try to create a symbiotic parasite to communicate with the bipeds more effectively?

fealty is not acquired via torture, but the promise of survival.
You live on to run your own colony, you just serve in a greater alliance of queens.

I doubt any humans IRL have been "converted" into becoming vassal nobles via torture (rather then just being killed and replaced)

>The implication behind Thinkers being "as close to sapient as you can get without really being sapient" is that we can't.
we obviously can, queens do it and we can birth queens.
I think it would just be extremely expensive to do so (incubation time in years instead of days, high nutrient costs, require thinker to manage incubation, etc)
>>
>>31615665
Your workers continue their duty, and the human rests. Most of his time is spent staring at a device on his arm. Our of curiosity you try to steal a look, but it seems to be complete gibberish. Something about young humans fighting other young humans. You find it all to be quite brutal. At one point he seems to notice your interest. "Just some old story. Bit close to home honestly." You disregard it and focus on more important tasks.

"Queen, I have finished!"
Your worker emerges from the corpse of the predator, a grotesque visage covered in splattered gore. You have uncovered some interesting findings from the creature. It has no eyes, but seems to have outstanding sense of smell, and in each of its feet there is a small spike, which is connected directly to a small nerve cluster. It has no true brain, but a distributed nervous system. The small spikes under the feet seem to detect electrical impulses, likely to hunt prey under ground.
>select new research

One of the drones that has been out hunting has gone astray. You have never known of this to happen before. You can no longer feel it, but your other drones can see it walking into the jungle. It does not respond to you.

hell fucking no we aren't bringing back the parasites.
kill it, dissect it (thinker drone cannot move and performs research via remote control of workers), when research done destroy the corpse AND the drone who did the research in case it was infected too and have them burned. also, start developing biological countermeasures based on your research (like, a special worker which produces enzymes which kill said parasite)

You order two of your drones to break off and follow the stray. You must discover what could possibly sever your connection to your worker. The worker stumbles about the jungle, a shell of its normally graceful self. You focus all your effort to peering into its mind, and eventually you get a single thought.
"Climb"
The worker struggles to climb one of the mushroom trees, its carapace cracking as if stiff at the joints. As it nears the top it sinks its mandibles into the trunk of the tree and you can feel it drift away.
What could possibly have caused this? You give your thinker a new task, to study the substance from the ocean. It must hold an answer.
You hear more cracking. The worker is still moving, but not of its own volition. Its limbs twitch and convulse. You order your workers to flee as quickly as they can and as you do so the stray's head bursts like a blossom, fungal spores, thick with blood fly across the clearing as tendrils of alien fungus sprouts from every crack in its carapace.

>>
>>31616406
>They all must be ultimately deriving energy from geothermal sulfur vents or something instead of photosynthesis.
there aren't any fungus on earth that does that. deep thermal vent creatures are not fungus

on earth fungus gets its nutrients and energy by either forming a symbiotic relationship with a plant. or by being a parasite, or by consuming corpses.

the defining traits of fungus is philia. fungus is a multi cellular organism whose cells form a strand that is 1 cell thick and very very many cells long. Each cell has a fungal cell wall (different from baceterial cell wall and plant cell walls in structure), and the cell walls between each adjacent cells have holes in them which allow for free flow of nutrients and sometimes even DNA between them.

Fungus sexually reproduces by two strands from different individuals meeting and combinging their DNA. they then fruit, creating a mushroom which disperses spores

Not him, but we're playing a quest with a giant psychic bug crustacean thing as the MC. Are people really going to complain about the fungi being unrealistic?

honestly, when I say fungus I mean
>alien shit that looks like fungus and has spores
It has evolved in an environment totally isolated from actual fungus, so if we get down to it, it wouldn't classify as anything properly when compared to earth life. Same goes for the queen. Fungus is just a really convenient term that conveys how it looks and functions really well.

>>31616568
>there aren't any fungus on earth that walks on two legs and eats things either, or that covers the entire ocean, but here we are.
he seemed to be referring to earth fungus in his post which I quoted, so I explained earth fungus to him.

it's really a decision for after that, dependent on what we learn.

can we lay an egg from which hatches a drone which is basically a sack of self igniting organic naplam and everything else is atrophied (basically has to be carried somewhere)

or we could make a drone that has extra bestest sensory and dissection tools and the self immolation ability.

Or we are just over thinking it and freaking out over something that is easily solved. I mean, we have zerg tier genetic manipulation here. we can just make ourselves immune to this thing with some study in the future and in the meantime, just keep it away

>leave it, and don't go near it again (future research permitting)

Your drones turn away, and rejoin their brothers on their hunt. They have gathered an assortment of small plants and animals...or at least you think that's what they are. Some of the things that looked like plants either tried to fly away or tried to kill your worker, so you can't be entirely certain where plant ends and animal begins on this world. In any case, they seem edible enough. Your workers even got lucky and encountered the remains of one of the large worms you witnessed before. Several drones load it up and they make their way back, loaded with supplies.
+86 nutrients

As your workers finish their duties, your first eggs begin to hatch.
"Ah!, uh, something happening!" Lee yells as the eggs around him begin to shake. The first one ruptures with a long, slender claw and a worker slowly seeps from the soft shell and onto the floor.
"Kinda cute when there little."
You find the notion ridiculous. Your children are always beautiful.
"We are hands, mother!"
your children chime in as they attune themselves to your will. Such precious little darlings.
As your first clutch workers return, they drop themselves next to the eggs, and the new hatchlings quickly turn on them, tearing them apart and devouring any trace of them. Lee nearly jumps out of his suit.
Unsure of what to make of it, he eventually calms himself and states simply "Quite the recycling program you have..."
>>
>>31616877
such a thing would decrease our ability to recycle our dead, increase costs, and decrease efficiency of all future units.
we have already built A unit with such a sac. we should not make it standard issue yet. maybe if cordicepts gets out of control

>>31616885
From now on, only one drone gets to come in and out of the queen's chamber. to dispense from the food fungus syrup. Food Drone only leaves to put stuff into food storage and otherwise stays with us in quarantine.

Everyone else stays out.
>>
>>31616923
Hm. Luckily, he's a perceptive fellow. I guess he recognizes the activity here. Good.

Alright then! We got us a little food. That is good. Now, we should focus on scouting for/finding a way to farm more resources. A steady income is what is gonna allow us to spread our brood.

Any ideas on creating farms? Because I am not 100% on that...

For now, let's deal with the human I reckon.
>>
>>31616933
>a substance that neutralizes any foreign substance
...that's like saying "a bottle of an acid that can dissolve anything"

It sounds OP and not entirely logical.

I doubt it's possible to neutralize any substance we've never even seen before and thus can't recognize.
>>
>>31616933
a panacea like that doesn't exist
>>
>>31616940
>and otherwise stays with us in quarantine.
the idea of a quarantine is NOT to keep your most valueable unit (us) and resource (+50 food a day spring +water spring) with the infected stuff.
it is to make a quarantine room that is isolated from the rest of the hive. so whatever is there cannot infect us, cannot infect our water, cannot infect our food, and cannot infect any of our drones.

also, if the hive is infected, that one drone going in and out will bring it to us, so its not a real quarantine.

We could and SHOULD eventually create a special quarantine for the queen chamber where things only go out and not in (by having her lay new eggs and then have those carry out the harvested food as they hatch)

heck, we should have a seperate chamber for the queen from the food spring
>>
>>31616970
>>31616976
simple at first that can be updated as we discover new pathogens and neutralizes spores and such not EVERYTHING
>>
>>31616967
>Any ideas on creating farms? Because I am not 100% on that...
we have this foul tasting fungus that creates delicious jelly spores in water. If we find other suitable springs we could plant more of it. or we could artificially replicate the conditions it grows in.
or we could farm anything else really (there are tons of different creatures/plants on this planet). we would basically have to do research on what is farmable and which is most efficient to farm
>>
>>31616923
Start with the talking. You can pretty much skip the interactions unless there's a funny quip to make.

Carefully quarantine all samples SEPARATELY, and research the brain fungus.

also, damn you for the brain-fungus, I'm about to go to the doctor to see if the odd lump on my wrist is completely benign or more dangerous than I thought. I don't need this paranoia
>>
>>31616985
Yeah, but unfortunately we committed to the queen's brood lair being in the same room as the steady food supply.

using it as a throne.

so it was the closest thing.

either we need food, and someone has to come in to bring it to us, or they need food, and they have to come in and take it from beneath our big fat butt.
>>
>>31617010
>>31616967
the humans must be getting food from somewhere, combined efforts could yield farming of some kind

>>31616923
>>31617022
>Start with the talking.
did the ambassador drone even hatch or only the workers?
>>
>>31616923
Now for our fabulous rainbow beetle to start singing and dancing.
>>
>>31617034
we could have the queens chamber just off to the spring. one drone goes back and forth to it to bring her food and water.
daily, newly hatched workers carry water and food out from here to the rest of hive.

alternatively we can just harvest her food at the source, but rest of hive can harvest a hundred feet downstream.
>>
>>31616923
As your eggs hatch, you pay close attention to one in particular. As it emerges it is obvious even to Lee that it is quite different. It's head is much more rounded than normal, with its mouth a wide maw of solid, chitinous teeth. Two flaps of skin struggle to cover the adapted mandibles, and as it seeps from its egg it tests its unique ability.
What does it say to the human?

seemed obvious from mentions of industry, metal usage, and the fact we had an FTL engine bolted onto our egg
>>
>>31617813
Yes, you have access to the Blink Drive, but it will need a lot of infrastructure to create and develop fuel for. It permits instantaneous travel from point A to point B, but as the distance increases it becomes more and more inaccurate. Range is mostly dependent on sensors.
>>
>>31617790
We can have multiple sets of antennae on speciality drones?

We really should have at least one for EM radiation.

To detect the radio frequencies the humans' technology uses, and figure that stuff out.
>>
>>31617858
You would need to make room by weakening other senses, such as eyesight if you wanted multiple, but I don't see why not.
>>
>>31617858
>To detect the radio frequencies the humans' technology uses, and figure that stuff out.
we don't know that it uses radio (if it even uses radio, maybe it has quantum entanglement communicators)
>>
>>31617880
what about my earlier idea of scout/hunter drone?
a small flier (size of eagle) that has poison sting. it can sting a giant flyer predator or large carnivore predators and then workers will carry the carcasses to hive

also, when fighting it can augment warriors by stinging enemies. it mostly works off of being really fast, mobile, and poisonous
>>
>>31617880
Oh, the carapaces for our newly hatched replacement Worker drones.

Are they camouflaged according to the local forest?

And they handle the atmosphere much better than the first clutch, right.
>>
>>31617916
what does it sacrifice from the standard model in exchange for these advantages?
>>
>>31617945
it is tiny in comparison to the standard model, it is much weaker. it has no real carry capacity at all. it has no non-poison means of dealing effective damage (in case it encounters something immune to its poison).
it probably has higher metabolism (however that is balanced by its much lower mass). poison has limited storage amount and needs time to recharge obvious.
>>
>>31617916
That sounds fine. Wing adaptations are unique in that they cause changes in other adaptations, such as lowered durability (less health) and smaller in size. It also gives them a higher metabolism, which gives them a slightly higher upkeep cost. Poison, venom, or other toxins could be researched (lord knows you are surrounded by the stuff already) to make a stinger adaptation.

>>31617923
Yes, but they do change slightly with their diet.

>>31617945
It would be fast and small, so hard to hit, but if anything did hit it it would likely be down for the count. Stinger effectiveness would be determined by what you research, and swooping attacks would get a bonus to damage, but would be less accurate.
>>
>>31617991
We can begin mining at any time?

What would be the... first 'step' in tech tree climbing -- you know, the first tools required to make more complicated tools, which are required to make more sophisticated technology in turn , etc.
>>
>>31617991
perfect. I wanna research that then. we shall use it to hunt the flying predators. with the predator population decimated our species will be safer from attacks AND will be able to assume their role as the top of the food chain (something has to keep the population of creatures lower on the chain in check lest they over-breed and consume all natural resources and all starve)
>>
>>31618026
Yup, although you can't just dig anywhere. You need to find an ore vein. I'll just lump all metals into one big category for simplicity, and once you find one I'll roll for richness.
It should be noted that mechanical and organic tech are not mutually exclusive, and you can mix and match them as much as you want. It might end up a horrible frankenstein bug monster, but you can still try.

>>31618032
wings or stingers? you already have wings, and you will need to research a poison, venom, or other such toxin to incorporate it.
>>
>>31618092
>wings or stingers? you already have wings, and you will need to research a poison, venom, or other such toxin to incorporate it.
the entire design
wings, stinger, and toxin.
and while we are at it. make it as small as it can be while maintaining full range of vision and telepathy. (not sure how small it is).

... actually, what sizes are workers, warriors, and thinkers?
>>
>>31618092
What's the minimum size for a controllable drone?

Is this modified for whether we want it to be able to fly, in addition to see and hear and crawl?
>>
>>31618127
stingers are just a delivery system.
wings you have.

you need toxin SAMPLES to research and duplicate it sounds like.
>>
>>31618182
It will certainly take work to get such a thing working, yes.
I was just describing what I want to achieve.
>>
>>31618156
At current tech, i'm gonna say about 2 feet if you start stripping other parts to make room while still being a functional drone. You could research genetic miniaturization, but it would take a while.

>>31618127
workers are about the same size as an average human, around five feet.

Thinkers are just a brain in a box, so they are much smaller. About a foot in diameter and they look like a beetle. Their legs are bundles of nerves that can 'plug' into other drones, but they can't move, eat, see, ear, or do anything other than sit and think.

Warriors are quite large, and well worth the big cost increase. Almost seven feet in total. They are much, much slower and less dexterous than workers, but they can shrug off small arms fire like it was a squirt gun. They may have a harder time stopping a lightning gun, though.
>>
>>31618231
five feet high?

seven feet high?

what about length and breadth?
>>
>>31618231
So question.
Do you have an idea of what a alien bug queen hive should look like internally?
Because I don't.
>>
>>31618250
I imagine ant/termite nest. If it gets big anyway
>>
>>31618250
That part is really open-ended. It's daunting, i have no idea how to begin to plan 3D base layout.
>>

>>31618243
That would be their height when standing upright, as which point you could imagine them having dimensions similar to a centaur, so about the same in length.

>>31618250
Personally, I have always preferred to describe actions and let the reader assign what appearance they think is the most appropriate, although the closest thing I can think of would be pic related.
>>
>>31618250
I feel like QD should present a couple options for us to pick from with the option of mish-mashing parts if we want.

I mean, fuck, we're supposed to have an extensive genetic memory with all kinds of shit. We can shit out a warp drive but we can't get a couple of options for digging a hole?
>>
>>31618303
To anyone wanted to provide drawings, I would encourage you just draw the first thing that you think of when you think of the queen or a drone. It's open ended on purpose.
>>
>>31618313
There are some basic things we can guess, though--

Like, digging deeper into the mountain, but not LOWER.

because lower, you might dig your way into a water way and flood yourself.
>>
>>31618231
>Warriors have harder time taking a lightening gun
future drone type research.
Speedy fighters: as fast and agile as possible. those drones fight by wielding a lightening gun. They rely on camoflage, shooting first, dodging, cover, etc to kill their enemies.

>>31618231
>At current tech, i'm gonna say about 2 feet if you start stripping other parts to make room while still being a functional drone.
sounds great. so, for my fliers we would make them 2 feet (vs the 5 feet tall workers) stingers. they will die to a single strike from pretty much anything. but hopefully they get to sting the enemy to kill it. call them kamikaze drones. (and gotta research them of course)
>>
>>31618303
The only reason I ask is because...well I mean, I want our 'palace' to end up multi-level, sprawling, and too complex for mere humans to just walk in and snipe our Queen.

Can we like have, Hive 'levels', where the structures grow more complex if we dedicate time to it, increasing 'defense' or something?

It's a bit hard to tell you when and what caves we want carved out, after all.
>>
>>31618330
Sadly, the only drawing I could do is MSpaint. And you do not want to see me do that. It's terrible.
>>
>>31611020
Oh hey this was the final decision right?

So we just tripled our Thinker power?
>>
>>31618303
>pic related.

I missed it the first time I read the sentence too, but they were asking what a 'hive' should look like internally, not what the queen looks like.

Nothing could be worse than my art, trust me. It's like I have two left hands, and I'm right handed.

>>31618378
yes, when they hatch you will be able to research 3 things at once, or combine them to make research faster and safer, or research something while giving a passive bonus to your drones.

>>31618391
ah. Same pic I suppose, but the background instead. The workers eat rock, grind it up, and mix it with saliva into a cement-like compound, so termite-like.

>>31618357
possibly. You would end up with areas some of your drone casts couldn't fit in though.

>>31618342
as to the lightning gun, think pic related, but in a compact rifle form. Shit accuracy, but high damage.
>>
>>31618425
>possibly. You would end up with areas some of your drone casts couldn't fit in though.
Oh? Would you mind expanding on that a little bit?
I'm curious.

Anyway, I am really getting excited for this quest. After we secure a solid income, our hive can grow big time. Just need to get farms and shit down.
>>
>>31618451
Well warriors are quite large, so if you are looking for architecture that limits enemy movement, it would probably be too small for most warriors. Of course, you could make a caste of smaller warriors made for close combat in that environment.

I want to make a map of the hive, but I have a feeling it will quickly become a cluster fuck of tunnels going in so many ways it would stump a Wankavator.

I'm really glad people like it. I just thought it would be a fun premise, spent a bit of time thinking on how it would work, and just ran it. It's new territory for me, but a hell of a lot of fun. Wish I could run more often.
>>
>>31618425
No, they just wanted more complexity to the hive to confound human navigation without perfect telepathy I think?

Like making the hive purposely unnecessarily confusing, like a labyrinth.

Anyone with mapping technology wouldn't be slowed down for long, but it'd force them to make a lot of exploration and guesses.
>>
>>31618504
>Smaller tunnels
Nah man. The secret is LOTS of tunnels, going EVERYWHERE. That's how real ants do it. Confusing for anything but their own men who know the scent trail to follow.

But if you did a map for it, you don't need to do all those tunnels dude. Just do the basics
>Palace/Throne
>Storage
>Birthing/Egg room
>Etc etc etc as needed
Only show the rooms, and how they relate to one another via distance and 'floor', and the paths that lead directly to and from. That's all that matters, right?
>>
>>31618425
>safer

All on the lightning gun! We're gonna be insectoid electric eels, guaranteed.

Think we can also recover a biped suit and figure out all the neat bits and baubles it's got? Our current specimen seems to be using his at the moment.

I'm also surprised we're diplomancing with non-queens already. We should be prepared in case the bipeds want to try and exterminate us while we're still so vulnerable.
This one has already expressed displeasure towards our attempt at creating a more suitable medium for communication for some reason, so who knows how others like it will react.
>>
>>31618537
Yeah we can just keep a running descriptive greentext in that case.
>>
>>31618569
Yeah really it's far too early at such a vulnerable state.

Fortunately, they are isolated and cut off from their civilization.

Which means we have a time limit to GIT GUD before they can Exterminatus.
>>
>>31618569
We're not so much...diplomacizing...as we are determining hostility. This individual is okay, so we shall attempt to communicate with his kind. If they displease us, or withhold valuable resources, we will do what we must to survive. The hive comes before all. The swarm must survive.
>>
>>31609088
Man, that went right out the window with the new thread didn't it.

/tg/ never resists the urge to diplomance.

One can only hope Spaceman Lee will adhere to a request to keep the hive location secret.
>>
>>31618521
Oh, yea that could be done rather effectively. In fact, even without trying it will end up confusing for others to navigate just because of the lack of windows, signs, or major landmarks. Intruders would defiantly have a major penalty to finding their way around unless they have some kind of tech to overcome that.

>>31618537
Yea, I figured I would try that.

On an unrelated note, if ever want to get in the mindset of a hive insect, you should check out The Besieged Fortress. It's been described as "Apocalypse now on six legs" and that's the best description I can think of. It's about an African termite colony that goes through a series of Dorf Fort grade FUN.

>>31618569
honestly, I was surprised when you elected to not eat the four humans you found at the pod right then and there, but pleasantly so.
>>
>>31618602
>REVEALING YOUR EXISTENCE AT ALL
that's where you fucked up.

it's not worth the risk at such a vulnerable stage.

they only want off this planet, but who knows what other people might recognize us as matching the description of a threat from a foreign star system?
>>
>>31618609
>Labyrinth is go
Sweet. Protecting the queen is priority.
Oh, speaking of: Can we make 'Princess' drones that can evolve into a queen, should we parish? Or is there no such luck right now?

>Besieged Fortress
sounds interesting. Termites are one of those types of bugs-terrifyingly effective.

>Spoiler
Heh. Could 20 babby drones kill four armed (well, at least one was armed) humans?
I am not 100% on the strength of each drone currently.
>>
>>31618604
oh, and just so you know, the term "spaceman" was taken from the military rank "Airman", and is not meant to be as pulpy and golden-age themed as it sounds. It seemed like it made sense at the time, but now I keep picturing Buck Rogers when I read it.
>>
Man, I can't wait until we start doing ridiculous projects like flea circuses, or gold-plated carapaces.

All of our attempts at simulating human culture will be hilariously wrong and unbelievably disgusting to them; we know inside that our children are beautiful.
>>
>>31618628
No no anon, we will not reveal ourselves at all. Only the drone will speak.
>>
>>31618630
...what you are suggesting is laying queens.

Making queens that only become sentient on your demise would be ridiculously OP extra lives.

They aren't you.
>>
>>31618635
I do too. I picture the bulky ass space suits Neil wore.
I enjoy the image.

>>31618646
Hey, it was just a thought, anon.
>>
>>31618635
I keep picturing these guys as astronaut cowboys. So yeah...
>>
>>31618630
You were in a good enough position to try, but would have defiantly taken heavy casualties. I can say that for sure.

As for queens, yea you could, but you would have no control over them...or the hive they themselves control, and yes, your kind has known very bloody wars over land, resources, and living space. (of course, the billions of drones lost are not really mourned all that much.)
So you can, and she would still consider you a relation, but you should keep that in mind.

>>31618656
>>31618657
retro ascetic is best ascetic.
>>
>>31618645
it's a little late for that!

Spaceman Lee saw the hive, the eusocial structure, the disregard for individual lives.

they know everything they need to exterminate us if they wanted to. or anyone they ever talk to wants to.

even just revealing the Speaker drone is revealing your existence enough regardless. Questions will be asked. You can lie and say you're that body alone... then they'll want to know your whole deal and life cycle eventually. And knowledgeable xenobiologists might recognize a mildly modified worker drone and see through the ruse anyway.

That being dependent on terminating Lee.
>>
>>31618711
Ah. Good to know then. So no Princesses for us, then.

Hm..
Wow. then we'll need to come up with stuff to increase our queen's range of telepathy then I guess if we want to control the planet.
I guess the question is: Why do we exist? Was one old queen desperate for the continuation of our species, and launched us deep into space maybe?

A good tactic for a losing war, no doubt.
>>
>>31618733
You have no idea.
I was wondering when somebody would ask that.
>>
>>31618714
That does not mean they will pursue our death, only learning about us. Our drone would of course deny it, and if they threaten, it will just dissolve.

I also highly doubt the human will be able to retrace his steps through severeal miles of fungal monster forest he's never seen before. Besides, we were friendly to him.

All that said, I definitely think building a few warriors is a good idea. If only to be sure.
>>
>>31618733
>our genetic memory kicks in at the sight of a particular hive
>we become engulfed with a singular driving thought, more powerful than any fungus could suggest: Kill them.

I like this plot twist.
>>
>>31618756
I've been assuming it was just standard "spread my genes throughout the stars" manifest destiny.
>>
>>31618756
I have been thinking it, dear QM. But ah, so many questions I have.

I like the idea of keeping a pod of like, 500 Princess, and launching them in all directions in space should our hive become under dire attack. Those that find anything, will continue our blood line. And it's also a big "FUCK YOU" to the 'x extermination race'.

I also desire to become more like the Rachnii. Not necessarily hostile, but expansionist and territorial. We will not make the mistakes they did against the Krogan...
>>
>>31618765
>That does not mean they will pursue our death,
I never said it would. The point is:

a) nobody knows you exist: nobody can destroy you
b) somebody knows you exist: not impossible for them to decide to destroy you

which is preferable? when you haven't even hatched warriors yet and still eke out new nutrient sources?

>I also highly doubt the human will be able to retrace his steps through severeal miles
...he can see the river anon. right here in our hive.

he just has to follow the water upstream.
>>
>>31618798
I suppose you make a good point. Yet still, there is possibility for knowledge here. These creatures are quite skittish. There is very few ways we would be able to speak with beyond one on one that WON'T end with us getting shot.

I guess what I am saying is either we're nice to the human, and try to speak to them this way, or not at all, and risk them finding us as our hive grows and attacking us out right out of fear.

This way: We are seen as intelligent, worthy of speaking to (and hell, it appears to be worthy of some sort of information, too, whatever that device was.)
>>
>>31618832
If they encounter and discover our existence and hostilities are initiated, THEN we can sue for peace by bringing our Mr. Speaker to them.

>>
>>31618832
>that device
It's intended to teach new aliens English, to make first contact possible without involving half of NASA to spend years on xenolinguistics research. Mostly it's to try to keep the grunts from embarrassing the human race in front of alien diplomats.
I must admit, I'm a fan of the 'starfish alien', so inter-racial relations tend to be a bit awkward.
>>
>>31618868
Starfish aliens are damn hard to pull off in a sentient manner, too. I look forward to what you have in mind, QD.

>That device teaches english
Heh. The ultimate "Learn the language" policy, hm? Still. It implies the explorers are meant to make peace with new species.
>>
We should only bring the Speaker to human camps while it's with an actual human.

If we send a Speaker to a sapient race that doesn't know who or what we are, they're going to assume we're some sort of face-wearing murder insects and try to kill us before we kill them.
>>
>>31618888
I mean, we ARE, but still.
>>
>>31618883

Just thought of something absolutely terrifying.

We evolve up and create hundreds to thousands to millions of fast Locust drones that can eat any organic substance on a given planet.

After making the whole planet barren, or whatever parts we demand to be barren, we shovel all extra nutrition in Honeypots and start creating anything and everything we desire.

Locusts could turn into Honeypots on demand just like real ones, so that we wouldn't have to to keep birthing Honeypots, or getting the Locusts to carry around freshly-hatched Honeypots. If we do this, we will replace all life on the planet with Honeypots.

Although we should only do this to other planets once we establish a home. It'd be a pretty nasty thing thing to do.
>>
>>31619126
