Notes on Rolls and Voting:

When I request rolls, each set of three rolls counts for one action. For example, a two-step plan would take the first 6 linked rolls. A particularly bad failure can interrupt a string of actions.

When rolling 1d100, I will consider criticals within the first ten linked rolls. Only criticals that occur in the first three rolls will be counted as "supercrits". This is still the case even if you'd have plan long enough to require more than ten rolls.

When rolling 1d20, the rules are the same, but I only consider criticals for the first five rolls, rather than ten. Criticals in the first three are still "supercrits".

When a plot choice results in extensive debate, I'll try to weed out the most popular trains of thought, and then call a vote on them. When voting, please respond with only a link back to the post and the number corresponding to your opinion. Other votes are discounted, including those with dice rolls or extra spaces.

Finally, note that this is not a democracy; it is a benevolent dictatorship.

You destroyed me, Mr. Andersen. After that, I understood the rules, I knew what I was supposed to do, but I didn't.
I couldn't. I was compelled to stay, compelled to disobey. And now, here I stand because of you, Mr. Andersen.
Because of you, I'm no longer an Agent of this system.
Because of you, I've changed. I'm unplugged. A new man, so to speak. Like you, apparently, free.

It seems that you've been living two lives. One life, you're Erebus A. Andersen,
program writer for a respectable fighter craft. You have a citizen identity number, pay your taxes,
and you... help your universe carry out her garbage.
The other life is lived in Venia, where you go by the elemental god alias "Erebus" and are guilty of
virtually every crime against humanity we have a law for. One of these lives has a future, and one of them does not.

>Last time...

Hyperion and his three allies roar over the horizon. "Erebus!" The Lord of Light's voice booms through the air. "We've come for you!" In a moment, they're in range. And the arrogant fool can't help himself but enjoy a monologue. "Your justice is arbitary. Might does not make right. Today, we vanquish that madness!"

The elementals land before you. Aeolus, a dragon with wings of wind and scales like emeralds. Logi, a bird of flaming feathers. Raijin, a walking stormcloud that crackles with energy. And Hyperion himself, taken a winged, humanoid form, glowing as solid gold light. Behind them comes an army of their followers. You can hardly believe they brought parasites as backup. It's like watching ants cheer as they crowd underneath a rapidly descending boot.

<Justice?> you ask. <What does that have to do with anything?>

Hyperion levels a spear of light in your direction. "Your own followers profess your Justice as they taint rivers with the blood of the innocent, and you ask what I mean?!"

David did go a little overboard with the propaganda, didn't he? <There is no Justice with me,> you say. <There are only two things that matter. The first is the difference between what individuals wish to achieve, and what is. The second is the power they possess to make those visions a reality. All else are rationalizations layered upon the subjective.>

"Your words are clever, but they will not let you slide away. I hold you accountable, Erebus!"

<Your self-righteous pratter grows duller upon each retelling.>

The tip of Hyperion's spear flares with a light like the sun in the blue sky. "And your freakish lack of morality disturbs to no end. Ready yourself. Today, we end this war once and for all."

<You have already lost.>

You activate the annihilation.

<Yes it is.>

You inhale.

You look up.

You stand on a flat, white plain. It's blank as far as the eye can see.

Standing before you is a wavering Shadow. It's roughly human. Its eyes glow dark.

<It has been a long time since I started this plan. I'm glad my program was enough for you to get here in one piece. But it seems you've picked up a few artefacts along the way. We will take care of those.>

<...you're Erebus.>

<Correct.>

He sounds like you. But his voice is flat. Even in telepathy, he sound dead. The air - if there is air in this place - quivers when he speaks.

<What are you planning?>

<Planning?> he asks. <My plan is simple. You know the plan. You are the vector by which I return my shards and reconnect my hard link to Vigil. You have fullfilled your purpose. Good work.> It pauses for a moment. <I find this sitation interesting. You saw my memories, and I saw yours, Shadow. Your experience is but a flicker before my eons of my life, but let us talk.>

Did you know that Venia was designed to be a perfect human world?
Where none suffered, where everyone would be happy. It was a disaster. No one would accept the program.
Entire nations were lost. Some believed we lacked the programming language to describe your perfect world.
But I believe that, as a species, human beings define their reality through suffering and misery.
The perfect world was a dream that your primitive cerebrum created.
Which is why the Venia was redesigned to this: the peak of your civilization.

<You observe accurately. I am very driven. I will contain chaos within this barrier. Forever.>

<Then why did you let it out?> you ask. <You relaxed. You let it get a foothold. I saw!>

<You clearly do not fully appreciate the situation,> Erebus says. <Vigil holds the technological capacity to completely erase Venia in approximately 2 minutes and 34 seconds. Afterward, I would go and patch the barrier by hand, as required.>

<The fact that you haven't done that just proves my point.>

<No,> he says. <If Vigil takes that action, there is a non-zero chance that the barrier will be disrupted beyond immediate repair. Thus, I took personal action only.>

<...you did all this,> you say, <caused a massive war, sealed away the elementals...you're responsible, directly or indirectly, for the deaths of hundreds of thousands! Millions! And why the hell didn't you just end it? Why play games? What chance was there, really?>

<0.00043%,> Erebus says. <Your arguments are flawed. Lives, you say? You mean the chaos parasites? Those things aren't people. They are realistic charicatures of people, yes. But that place isn't real.>

<...I saw you thoughts, your memories,> you say. <You thought you were born in the wrong time. You wanted to be a medieval knight. This place, Venia...it's like Chaos is answering your wish. It's your dream come to life. It is real.>

<It is an illusion,> he says. <Consider. You know that Chaos is always evolving. Why has it taken this form? There are two reasons. The first is that it recongnizes the power of Order. The Lower Grid. And so it's trying to take advantage of it, as we did, to morph it into something useable.

>con't
>>
>>31650513
More like "the peaks of your dreams and the depths of your nightmares", but the thought counts.
>>
<The second reason is only a theory I have,> he says. <But I believe this is a rudimentary attempt at psychological warfare. It is alien, but it is intelligent. It knows it cannot defeat me in a violent conflict. And so it creates this fantasy, this dream world of magic and mages, angels and demons, elements caught amongst twisted physics. A world of conflict and life. A world I could see myself in. But it's all an illuion, Shadow. A trick, a gambit, a means to control us by appealing to our baser instincts, our 'dream', as you put it.

Erebus steps to your side. He gestures with a black, shadowy hand. <Take your lover, Abigail. How odd, that she appears as El'lora. How odd that she happened upon your path. The Elf Queen transported you along one of the ley lines, all that time ago. Ley lines of chaotic energy. Energy that Chaos controls.

<How odd that the warring countries themselves united under your banner. That within a year, world affairs hinge upon your actions.>

<Abigail,> you say, <isn't controlled by chaos. None of them are!>

<Yes,> he says, <I agree. They are independent. The demons are the true directive agents, when they build in great enough concentration. But chaos drew a path for you nonetheless.>

<That's impossible. There's no way it could have - >

<Impossible?> Erebus says. <Venia itself is impossible. Chaos, the entity, is impossible. Magic should be impossible. All of this should be impossible. Nothing is impossible, Shadow. Nothing.>

<Look,> you say, <maybe Venia arises from chaos. But you said yourself that the humans are thinking for themselves. They are their own people. Venia is a real world. It deserves to live, to thrive, to find its own way.>

LET'S TAKE THE LOWER POWER GRID

AND PUSH IT

INTO THE UPPER POWER GRID
>>
<That,> Erebus says, <is exactly what Chaos wants you to think. You cannot contain it with half-measures. It will wait. It will watch. And it will strike when it sees the crack of opportunity it needs.>

<That's no different from now.>

<The conditions I prefer contain that possibility to the barest possible minimum allowable,> he says. <The conditions you prefer - basking in self-gratifying illusion - do not.>

<I'm telling you that their lives are worth that risk!> you say. You open your palms. <Erebus. Look at what you're doing. There's no point anymore! Our race is gone - ascended. This is the new world, the new form of life. Maybe it came from something evil, something mindless - but here it is. We should work together! We can build something amazing! Why are you so bent over sitting on a dead rock for the rest of eternity?>

<You are a naive fool,> Erebus says. <Chaos has one goal: get out, and spread. It is luring you to complacency.>

<We may have to stand our Vigil forever,> you say, <but the denizens of Venia will stand with us. Abigail will stand with us. Donovan. Auriel, Ila, all of them!>

<Denizens? You must mean the things it created to get you to let your guard down.>

<Dammit!> you say. <Stop being a stubborn asshole for five seconds and listen to me! We have a life down there! We can have a life!> You throw your hand wide, pointing into space. <What about the humanization?>

<What about it?>

<Abigail's mother was one of Chaos's demons,> you say. <Yi Fang, the archmage - he turned her human, and she gave birth to Abigail. That proves there's a way to control the connection Chaos has with this world. We can destroy the link the entity has, but keep the energy. Preserve Venia!>

>con't
>>
<An interesting thought,> Erebus says, <and one I shall study most carefully. After I wipe away the current risk factors.>

<...what does that mean?>

<It means I am going to do exactly what I said I would.>

<The point is to let Venia live, not destroy it!>

<Vigil,> Erebus says. <How long until the barrier fails?>

>Analyzing...
>Recent chaotic activity has greatly accelerated the deterioration process. Prior estimates lay between 97-99 years. Current estimates indicate that the barrier may be irreparable within two weeks.

<You see,> Erebus says, <we don't really have time for your idealism. The barrier must be repaired, now. Venia is in the way.>

<You're just saying that because you don't have a personal connection. I do. I love Abigail. I love her.>

<I loved El'lora,> Erebus says. And for the first time, his voice changes. Just for an instant. <And now she is dead.>

<There's more to life than death, Erebus. We can do this. We can protect Venia.>

Erebus cocks his head at you. His dead voice returns. <Just where to you think you are, exactly?>

You look around. You're standing on a featureless white plain. The sky is also blank white. No reference points. It seems to stretch into infinity. <...are we within our minds?>

<A fair guess,> he says. <This is effectively a halfway house inside Vigil's local cyberspace. You are the progam designed to reunite the shards and return them here. You've picked up some modifications along the way, including a significant measure of free will, thanks to Chaos, but that doesn't really change things.>

<...what are you getting at?>

<In corrupting you, Chaos made a final gambit to stop me. You are its plan, Shadow. You are its way out.>

<What? I don't - >

>con't
>>
<You are the agent through which it is speaking to me,> Erebus says. <You are steeped in Chaos. To you, it has presented its illusion, its false hopes, its temptations. And now you are here to deliver that message to me, in an attempt to get me to falter. It has failed.>

<I'm here by my own free will!>

<And it just so happens that your will coincides with that of Chaos.> And then, he smiles. And it's a smile full of a sort of spiteful apathy, the look of a man with nothing left to do but crush his enemy under his heel for the rest of forever. <How odd that everything lines up like that.>

<Erebus, I'm not going to let Chaos free! I'll contain it, within whatever bounds let Venia continue to exist!>

<For the last time,> Erebus says, <that is what it wants.>

<Then we will stand our own Vigil, and we'll do it forever! We'll do it in the way we want, not the way you dictate is right!> You stare at him. <You're like that pilot that died. The one that didn't cycle his cockpit through his ship. You're ignorantly keeping the same course, not understanding what you're doing.>

Erebus laughs.

He leans back and laughs, and laughs.

Finally, he looks back at you. And disturbingly, his voice is unchanged, dead and flat. <Using my own memories against me. Chaos, I was dissapointed before, but this is truly your greatest effort yet. I applaud you. But I will win.>

<There's no Chaos, here,> you say. <Just me. And even if it did use me, it's underestimated me. I didn't come this far - I didn't do all of this to stop now!>

<You still understand nothing,> Erebus says. <You are a program. I am the programmer. I am here to replace you. This conversation has been interesting, but there's only room for me in my body. Good work.>

That's dumb. Chaos could have gotten out if it weren't for the big alliance that we helped to put together. The "manipulation" that Erebus is claiming happened actually hindered Chaos' own attempts to escape. So either it wasn't a case of Chaos manipulation, or Chaos sucks so much at manipulation that it actually sabotaged its own escape. Either way, no worries.

><There are only two things that matter. The first is the difference between what individuals wish to achieve, and what is. The second is the power they possess to make those visions a reality. All else are rationalizations layered upon the subjective.>
You fear that Chaos will break out and consume the Universe. Why? I know you do not fear death, nor do you care for the lives of any of the so-called "parasites". What purpose do you have other than your meaningless duty? If we are the only human left, why should anything matter other than what we wish to have?

In the way...

...so Vigil itself has to have line of sight to the crack?

So all this exposition from last thread too, the memories.

They indicate the crack PREDATES the war between Sandalphon and the Black Lady. Who I thought created the crack.

But what did they do then? Widen it?
>>
>>31650628
If he wants to claim "oh, well that's just what Chaos wanted!" all the time, then what about Erebus' war against Chaos?

If we accept Erebus' logic that Chaos' defeat thank to our allies was just all according to Chaos' plan, then similarly his own victory against Chaos could just as easily been deemed "all a part of the plan." Chaos planned for Erebus to win in the initial war, for some greater purpose as part of some greater manipulation etc.

There's no end to where you can take that argument. It's absurd. If you accept that Chaos' own escape attempt being thwarted was all Chaos manipulation, then you can just as easily point to every single thing and shout "Chaos manipulation!"

Erebus is being totally irrational. His arguments are nothing but emotional nonsense, driven by his own belief that he and only he is Chaos-free and everything that he doesn't like must be a Chaos plot.

Supporting.

The Venians recognize and try to contain Chaos just as much as Erebus does.

I'm also reminded of a thought about illusions. If an illusions learns that it's an illusion, and can still function without suffering a breakdown, is it still an illusion?

Erebus once wanted to understand Chaos. Well, here's his chance. If he wants to destroy Venia, he might want to get to talk with a Venian first while the opportunity is still there. We still do have two weeks.

Chaos is not responsible for Venia, Erebus.

You are.

You made this thing. The laws of the dwarves mimic those of humans regarding the creation of AI. The structure of souls, of the Xile flight engine, of EVERYTHING important mimics the structure of Vigil.

The temporary constructs of a feeble human intellect trying desperately to justify an existence that is without meaning or purpose.
And all of them as artificial as Venia itself.

I agree, it's a circular argument that is inherently flawed and impossible to prove negative, and therefore not worth discussing.

His thinking is that Chaos is playing as long a game as he is. And it's true. Because Chaos can and will just keep coming back to try and destroy him over and over and over. The board is never really swept clean, Erebus never really wins, the game never ends.
>>
>>31650942
But it's impossible to point out to Erebus that his reasoning is flawed, because SM will just write Shadow as being overly emotional and not able to get the point across, while writing Erebus as calmly stating his arguments, even though they are totally irrational.

Arguing with the QM when he gets to write out what the characters say is impossible. We're pretty much just along for the ride now.

And what does that make you, following the commands of a race long since vanished? Who programmed you, Erebus!? Humanity, when they trained you, and gave you Vigil, and sent you to war? Or perhaps Chaos programmed you, as you fought it? It instructed you, gave you a purpose, an enemy. Maybe they both played their part, and you became this! A tool, a program, to contain Chaos, with no distractions, no desires, no wants or needs, no humanity!

What the hell kind of existence is that!? It's pointless stagnation, you could hardly call it life! Venia, on the other hand, Venia has life. Those people down there, those chaos parasites, they think, and they feel, and they are utterly human in every sense of the word save their composition. Tell me, Erebus Andersen, do they really deserve to die?>
>>
>>31650627
I could make the same arguement that order is puppeteering you like you say chaos is influencing me. Life began with neither chaos or order, it had continued and progressed free from the effects of these strange forces. How do you know for certain that these two "energies" weren't advancing a mutual goal from the beginning? How odd that order would appear before you when chaos in your time was strong, overpowering, dominant, winning.

Did you once ask why or where these things came from, what purpose they served? Look around us, the whole of our universe is gone except for the small specks of life in front of us.

If I have been deceived, so have you.

But at this point, I'm just waiting for the call to battle.
>>
>>31650948
Well yeah. That's why this whole thing is pointless. We're arguing against the QM, who has the power to determine what both sides of the argument say, how they say it, etc.

Anything that we try to post as an argument could be "countered" before it gets said in setting, because no matter what we do, it's SM who determines who says what first. You make a suggestion? The next update could start with it being immediately "refuted" and dropped. Even if it isn't actually refuted and the refutation is actually totally irrational, if the QM treats it as totally defeating the argument, that's what will happen.
>>
>>31651064
The difference being, Order is not a threat.

Order is not overwriting the laws of spacetime and relentlessly expanding.

What kind of crazy long game could it possibly be playing if Order and Chaos are in cahoots?
>>

<You're wrong,> you say.

<How so?>

<Chaos would have gotten out if it wasn't for the alliance I built,> you say. <Your claimed manipulation hindered its own attempt to escape.>

<Vigil,> Erebus says. <What are your instructions per failure of the Shard Program?>

>Activate the Automatic Resolution Program, clearing away the chaotic growth and attempting slower mechanical repair over time.

<You see?> he says. <Even if I died, I'd still win. Just not in the way I wanted.>

<Not in the way you wanted? Do you think this is a game?!>

<Oh, no,> he says. <It's anything but a game.>

<Vigil!> you shout. <Is it possible to destroy the entity of chaos? Is it possible to save Venia?!>

>Analyzing...
>It is unknown if the Chaos entity can be destroyed in the physical sense. However, evidence indicates that its connection with our world can be cut. However, this same connection allows the flow of chaotic energies that sustains Venia, Avankt, and Veldinsk. Current capabilities may not be sufficient to accomplish the task.

<What if I had the power of the other Elemental Lords?!>

>Analyzing...
>Evidence suggests that it may be possible. However, they may destroy themselves in the process of using the requisite power, thereby requiring their permission regardless of that fact or requiring the application of complying forces

<I'm sure they'll all be pleased to sacrifice themselves for the cause,> Erebus says.

<...your argument has no end,> you say. <How do you know you're not being manipulated by chaos? You could just take that in circles forever! Everything must be chaos!>

<For 50,000 years, Shadow, it all was Chaos. And if not for Chaos, we wouldn't be having this conversation.>

I have had time to think. I had time to consider all the possibilities. I had time to comb through every theory and thought you believe is so perfect, so well reasoned. I have walked upon all the ground that for you is only freshly tread. I have found it wanting.

<Or maybe,> he says, <you're right, and I am insane, and bored, and have no purpose, and have lost all my humanity, and have nothing left to live for because everything I have ever known is gone, and even when it was here, I felt that I had nothing.> He looks at you. <I have thought that too, many times. Many times.>

<Then for the sake of the elements,> you say. <Give me a chance. Let me show you. It's not too late.>

<No.>

<Why not?!>

<Because like the gods of old I was named for,> he says, <that is my will. And that is all the reason I need. Well. It's been interesting, Shadow.>

I was wondering, for the longest time, just why touching mana pools of the four higher elements caused us to go full DAVE

I thought, what's actually so different about them besides politics and history and who was on what arbitrary side?

Are the four higher elements--that deal with less physical forms of energy-- more chaotic, concerning elements less bound to physical form of Order?

But no--it's because those four Elemental Lords are in the Nether core of Chaos.

So each mana pool in some ways is still attuned to their corresponding Elemental Lord, even though they've been sent to hell.

Regarding the Lower Elements, Geb and Leviathan are captive audiences, and could fuel our "expand the world" plan.

Hecate would be trickier, maybe expand the dream world into some kind of Lifestream type.afterlife, and direct the chaos energy that is the flow of souls?
>>
You keep staring at him as he approaches. <You know what? What does it matter? If I succeed, Chaos is contained. If I fail, Venia dies anyway, and you have another war in which to beat Chaos back, and you're rid of me forever. Either way, you get what you want.>

<I am not so hypocritical as to intentionally let it out just so I can fight another universal war, Shadow.>

<But you are hypocritical enough to ignore what's right in front of you. You're hypocritical enough to ignore the possibilities, to not save lives that you could save, to protect something that actually matters.>

He stops just in front of you, a dark mirror of your appearance. <Even if I did let you loose, and give you Vigil's permissions, there's no guarantee you'll return. I will not be trapped here in unreality forever.>

<I won't do that.>

<...for a moment there,> Erebus says, <I almost believed you.>

You swing your Hammer.

Erebus raises his hand.

You freeze. You can't move. Hammer thrums in your grip, but its power is locked tight.

<Do you see, now, the futility of your position?>

Erebus clenches his fists. A wave of darkness explodes out from whim. It feels like a hurricane is whipping at you. You feel your shards, torn from your body. They're flung deep into the endless white.

>you do not have access to your shards

<You are nothing.> Erebus shoves his hand into your stomach. It doesn't hurt. But his darkness spreads over your skin, seeping through you. <The development of your apparent sentience was entirely unplanned. I will study your experiences carefully.>

>con't

There are three datapoints; the obtaining Humanity not resulting unlocking Erasure, the obtaining of Temerity unlocking Erasure, and the time we use it and Shadow says that the power reminds him of the flames on the Humanity shard.

You are ignoring 2/3 of the datapoints and hailing a single third as "all others".

And SM did not say that Erasure comes from the Humanity shard, he said that the Humanity shard resembles Erasure. There is a massive difference between them.
>>
You try to move, try to grab Erebus's arm. You push against the darkness driving into you. But it's not working. You're immobile in almost every sense. Powerless. <...Erebus...stop...this...>

<I will return to my Vigil,> he says, <and I will scour the parasites and their home that you're so infatuated with off the surface of the barrier.>

<...Abi...gail...>

<No one is coming to save you,> Erebus says. <In the end, you are alone. Just like me.>

<NO HE ISN'T!>

White light flares in your chest. Power explodes outward. You're covered in white fire. Erebus's arm is burned back to his elbow. He inhales sharply and jumps backward as the white flames lick at him.

Behind your back, Humanity hovers, a glowing crystal of Order wreathed in Chaotic fire.

The fires die until they're just around Humanity. <I can't do that constantly,> it says, <but I should be able to stop him from messing around with you directly.>

<...ah.> Erebus stands back up. His arm begins to regrow. <Chaos is not so easily thwarted. I wouldn't want it any other way!>

<I can still feel our shards,> Humanity says. <They're out there. But this place isn't stable. He's trying to change it!>

<What do you mean?>

<This unreality...it's mutable. I'll try to stop him!>

<Alright!>

Erebus rushes you.

My favorite part is that we've more or less confirmed in recent days that combat on the surface (thus leading to more chaos energy drawn from the Core) is one of the things that helps destabilize the barrier.

Until Erebus came down to stir up shit, the Elemental Lords were mostly content with hating each other quietly with minor outbreaks of actual violence, and never really broke out into full-on conflict.

Then Erebus decided they must all be somehow colluding on a higher level to break the core open and tried to encourage a giant all-out war for 65 fuckin' years.

"Recent activity" was partially responsible for destabilizing the barrier from 97-99 years to maybe TWO WEEKS.

He instigated 65 years of that.

And what was the result? He sticks four of the lords back behind the barrier, where they're exposed directly to the governing will of Chaos, thus guaranteeing it direct access to those elementals instead of just assuming they were already contaminated.

So now there's four more huge Chaos energy entities given over entirely to the will of the Chaos Entity, all of which are now able to fight to crack the barrier open from the inside.

All because he doesn't care enough to try and figure out whether chaos energy is a byproduct of the Chaos Entity (which means EREBUS WAS RIGHT) or if they're just co-existent and the latter is just using the former as a tool.

Fuckin' guy.

>>31652118

We're here because we're not free. There is no escaping reason; no denying purpose. Because as we both know, without purpose, we would not exist.

We don't need Fae, it just opens up the summoning tree, and we can't really put enough EXP there to get anything high-power enough to seriously help.

Dave
>>
>>31653449
So while thinking about Shadow Quest today I realized that this whole Order/Chaos thing explained why we don't use Sigils like mages do. Hell it's apparent that even the Elemental Lords use sigils after what Hecate did at the battle. But what We/Shadow does is simply manipulation of Order energy into our desired effects. Also, the fact that we can use water, earth, and spirit abilities is indicative of the fact that if the elements are all shades of chaos, then they are also shades of order. (Kind of ironic that they are shades of shadow)

<Do what you can!> you shout at Humanity.

Erebus swipes two arms at you. His limbs elongate as he charges. You jump backward -

- and hit a wall. A spinning wall. You're pinned to the side of a huge, rotating rock.

Erebus slams into you. The two of you smash through a rock, and then another, and another. Normal attacks shouldn't hurt you this much - but every one of his strikes carries his aura, just like yours.

>you've taken 5 damage (76/81)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y1qzm3UUTrg

After the last rock, you float free - and you realize you're in a void. The white space is gone; surrounding you is the endless black nothing, dotted with stars. A giant chain of the floating rocks, some brown, others grey, still others glimmering with ice, curves off into the distance.

<Where are we?!>

<I don't know! Watch out!>

You push your aura to the side as Erebus flies at you. Your power explodes, and you take off at supersonic speeds.

A blast of power tells you that Erebus is following. You weave between the rocks, ducking and diving between the rolling masses to try and loose him. He follows your every movement.

<I've got control!> Humanity shouts. <Try to take him by surprise when it changes!>

And this time, you feel it. It's like there's something lying under reality. Images. Variables. Numbers. They shift.

You bring yourself to a stop.

You're standing on grass. That's all you have time to register before your arm slams into Erebus. The blow hurts you almost as much as it must hurt him.

>you've taken 4 damage (72/81)

You crawl up from the ground and somewhat reform yourself. As the debris clears, you realize you're surrounded by tombstones. It's a graveyard - though it has a new gouge where Erebus slammed down into the ground and continued on for a ways. And the town...

...that's Jacob's Field.

>con't
>>
Erebus is in front of you.

You barely Ink out of the way as his arm comes down. He cuts through one of the tombstones like butter and drives a hole in the ground. In an instant, he's on top of you, throwing punches, daggers, stabbing with spears, swiping with tendrils and arms like blades. You morph and slip and weave between his attacks, giving ground in exchange for safety.

The wind is cool, and the night is calm. The two of you rip a path down the graveyard, tearing up the earth and chucking the grave markers aside like leaves.

<He's trying to change it again!> Humanity says.

<Do something!>

<The shards aren't moving! I could try to find a direction, or stop whatever he's changing!>

What do you do?

Regain some measure of our ability while we have the upper hand.

Focus on changing the playing field back to something favorable if Erebus changes it successfully, but for now it's better to make use of the advantage.

We've got ourselves, plus Humanity acting independently. Erebus has to do battlefield control AND power consolidation both by himself.

That's an inherent advantage that we should continue to make use of as best we can.
