Last time on Last Calibur:
You traveled to the city of Alpath to learn about your destiny. Sadly, it seems like neither you nor your magical sword have any particular fate about yourselves. After evading an Imperial ambush by destroying a large portion of the town and its waterways, you made your escape.

--

The tavern is full of noise and laughter as you and your friends, the witch Tayka and the demigod Rikki, take your seats at a table. You're feeling particularly confident and happy today, so you order the first round of drinks without even asking them their opinions on the matter. Tayka, always the more brash and outspoken one of your group, raises an eyebrow at you before beginning her usual lecture.

"Spending more money, Ekard? Did you knock your brains out back there? We don't have the money for luxuries when we're on the run like this!"

Rikki, your more soft-spoken, but earnest companion nods along with Tayka. It's not like her to oppose you, so even she must be worried about the group's expenses. But that's not really going to be an issue anymore. After all, you're a King now: One of the ten most powerful men in the world, given magical strength by your holy blade. You pat the weapon of legend hanging on your hip and tell them not to worry about anything.

"That sword isn't going to do you any good. It doesn't have the power of the Crown. You know, the absolute authority over commoners? Unless you plan to rob this place, you're still going to have to pay for all of this!"

Oh ye of little faith...

You pull up a canvas bag onto the table and let its contents spill out over the wood. Huge, fist sized sapphires and opals catch the candlelight of the tavern, glittering and catching the attention of all around you. You give Tayka an smug look and arrogantly cross your arms.
>>
>>31665784

"Is this...from the Shrine you just destroyed? Ekard, did you rob a Shrine!?" Tayka shrieks at you, but takes the drink the barmaid hands to her all the same. Rikki seems a little uneasy, but after a moment, she perks up, and you can see her inhuman ears twitching beneath her heavy hood.

"It's fine. We gods are supposed to owe allegiance to the Kings anyway," satisfied with her conclusion, she claps her hands together and offers a small prayer before beginning her own feast.

You lift the mug to your lips and smile. This is where everything turns around for you. You've got the money, you've got the power, you've got every excuse to go live your dreams now. A true adventurer! A life of constant excitement, of new sights, smells, and sounds. New people, fantastic situations, romance, action, exploration... Everything starts with this one mug of ale.

--

You wake up. Your head is pounding. Just how long were you out for...?

You feel your arms bound up in chains, and you look around yourself. You're in a cell in a stone keep. You can smell smoke wafting in through the window above you, and there is the sound of battle outside. You try to stand but you find that your hangover is more intense than you thought it would be. You look over yourself and notice that while all your other possessions are with you, your sword, the Nameless Blade, is missing. Damn! Just what happened here?

You can hear footsteps coming down the dungeon stairs. Someone is coming.

>Stay here and ask whoever is coming down what has happened.
>Break loose. No adventurer stays bound for long!

You put on your best brave face and let whatever is coming make its way over to you. You see a man approach, wearing a large leather coat. Across the back of his jacket is an odd emblem, a horse with a horn, drawing entirely in white. The man himself is strange as well, with his sideburns having grown out long enough to jut forward from his face, and his hair greased up into a large, almost cylindrical projection. Isn't that what they call a pompadour? The man looks over to you in your cell and his face lights up.

"Bro! There you are!"

Bro?

The man reaches behind his back and pulls forth...your sword! He tosses the weapon between the bars of the cell, and it lands at your feet. He jumps and shouts down the hallway, calling out to others that he's found you.

"Bro, am I glad to see you in one piece! Get outta there, the Black Unicorns need your help again!"

Black Unicorns? You yank yourself free of the chains and then, using the invincible edge, slash open the prison bars blocking your path. As you straighten out your clothes and hang your sword at your hip once more, the man beside you begins to talk.

"Bro, we thought you were done for! The damn Imperial bastards have got us cornered up in here, Bro. We're gonna need your muscle to beat them down and run them outta our town! You ready, Bro!?"

You raise an eyebrow. You don't have a clue what he's talking about...

You won't say no to a good fight!

"That's the Bro I know!"

He leads you up and out of the keep, which you now realize is on fire. You see a battle being waged all around the keep, as Imperial Soldiers and these "Black Unicorns" deliver mounted charges at each other, their lances breaking upon shield and horse. The Black Unicorn who rescued you walks you through the Black Unicorn's camp. Every which way you look, you see men in similar uniforms, all with the same ridiculous hairstyle. Fashion seems to be a number one concern at the camp, as a full third of the men are constantly adjusting their hair, and reapplying a waxy substance to keep it in place. The others are tending to their horses, which would have been normal, except the horses are also having their manes shaped into the odd pompadour.

"Bro, you are gonna be happy that you have me, Avan, to take care of you. I've kept your prized steed safe and sound over the last week, even through this battle! He's been waiting for ya."

Avan leads you into a tent where you lay your eyes on...a genuine unicorn? The magical beast is almost half again the size of a normal horse, and its horn crackles with magical power. You heard that Unicorns are normally white, but this one is a jet black color. Was it dyed that way?

"I'll leave you to to get reacquainted. We'll start our second charge in a moment, Bro. You just get yourself ready!"

You nod and return your attention to the magical beast in front of you. Did you really ride this thing?

'Yes, you did, you drunken half-wit.'

What? It spoke!? No, wait, that was all in your head. What's going on?

'I'm speaking into your mind. Ugh, there's nothing in here. At least you're sober for a change. I swear, the entire time I've seen you, you've just been stone dead drunk.'

Whoah, whoah. Just wait a second here. How long have you been drunk?

'Oh, at least a few days.'

At least?

'Yes, you were drunk when I met you. These buffoons have been trying to rescue my actual master for some time now, but of course none of them could actually ride me into battle. So you stumbled into town one day, climbed into my saddle, and that was that. You've been leading these idiots for a while now. Do you really not remember?'

Not a damn thing.

'Well, it doesn't matter. Hop on! The final attack is today, and I shall be reunited with my one true love!"

Uh, that doesn't really sound like your problem...but what the hell!? Not everyone gets a chance like this! You jump into the saddle and lead the titular Black Unicorn out into camp. The men cheer as you strut through the middle of their ranks, the magical energy flowing off both you and your legendary mount. They line up next to you as you survey the horizon. You see the battered keep and destroyed township. Mounted soldiers form up opposite you, readying their lances. You can hear the fevered chanting of their sorcerers, and the roar of their Blast Pikes being primed. The Imperials have really outdone themselves this time...

You unsheath your sword and cry out, charging at their ranks without a second thought. The men trail behind you, waving their clubs and spears as they tear across the battlefield. The enemy responds in kind, taking off at you with a reckless abandon, their formation breaking on their own enthusiasm. They must be tired of battle and are hoping to end it in one fell swoop. Too bad for them that you're here. You sweep your sword across the field, letting the crimson wave of magic cast them aside. Still they charge, their lances skimming the ground as they head straight for your mount...

Your power overflows, surrounding both you and the Unicorn with a nimbus of red light. With a burst of speed, you swing wide around the lance charge, crashing through their ranks as you approach the rear of their formation. Your sword flashes out, cutting down men like stalks of grain. The magic sparks through the air, blowing all those who aren't directly touched by your blade aside with great waves of power. You're untouchable, and the Unicorn sees to it, dancing away from blows before you can even pull on his reins.

'Oh, you're much better when you're not drunk.'

You hiss at the Unicorn, telling it to can it. You raise your sword, throwing off a bright beacon to your comrades in arms. They rally to you as the enemy forces gather together again, their lances brimming with magical power. More Blast Pikes, huh? Though longer and with a stouter frame, you recognize that violet swirl of power. Is that the cavalry variant? It doesn't matter. You've defeated them before and you'll do it again. You charge through their columns of energy, dodging left and right as they fire off magical beams wildly. Your steed narrowly dodges another shot from their Blast Pikes before you see the enemy switch positions, operating some mechanism on their weapons. Are they out of power at the moment? Then, this is your chance!

You rush them with everything you have as a second line steps forward, their Pikes rippling the early morning air with arcane might. You see their fingers reach forward, grasping some small lever on the underside of their weapons. The magic bursts forth in a great arc, ripping up the ground as it draws near. Your sword glitters as the sun peaks over the horizon and you feel a surge of power with the coming dawn. You raise your weapon to meet the magical beam...

The enemy has been firing their big powerful lasers wildly. Though they're reasonably organized into a loose line, they're not taking any particular aim, destroying the scenery in a devil may care fashion. It's a crash.

You meet the beams of light head on, thrusting your sword into them. Though you throw your weight into deflecting the magic, and you can feel the Unicorn beneath you digging into the dirt to oppose their power, you're thrown free of your mount, skidding across the ground as you tumble into the fray. You're up in an instant, swinging your sword around you as you cut more Imperials down, sending their horses crashing to the ground in your counter attack. You see the Unicorn being surrounded by Imperials and begin to dash towards it, but more soldiers intercept you. Though you can kill them without a second thought, their numbers prevent you from advancing any further as you are.

Without warning, you're snatched up into the air and plopped down onto the back of a horse. The rider looks back at you and flashes a smile.

"Hey, Bro, I got your back! Let's get you to your horse, baby!"

Avan kicks the side of his mount, causing it to jump over the heads of the Imperials. He swings his spear down, knocking their Blast Pikes aside as he pulls up to the side of the Unicorn. You give him a nod as you leap from saddle to saddle, finding the Unicorn with a natural ease. No sooner have you landed than you have to duck a flurry of blows from enemy lances. Like a storm of wood and steel, they come down upon you, and you meet their attacks with your sword, turning aside what you can as you fight to get control of the Unicorn.

You pull hard on the reins of the Unicorn. Without warning it leaps up many stories into the air. The lances beneath you crack and break upon each other, and you fall upon them in an instant. The glint of steel and the flash of magic is all the fanfare that their deaths get. You flick the blood off your sword as you turn and face the remainder of the forces.

'You didn't have to yank that hard, you know. I am a majestic creature.'

Oh, shut up. This is war! You charge the enemy, slashing through what remains of their ranks, their limp bodies being torn to bits by the magical energy you release. Elsewhere, you can see the Black Unicorns holding off their reinforcements, throwing their horses upon their shields without care for their lives or their safety. You're not sure if you like their style, but they've got some serious guts!

With a wave of your sword, you cast the forces around you back. A sudden gust of wind and the cracking of earth topples their mounts and breaks their will. Only a few stubborn remain at the rear guard, standing in from of the keep with a resolute bravery that you would admire if you weren't about to chop them to pieces. You have a passing thought about the pointlessness of this battle, but you quickly forget about it as you point your sword at the sky, letting your light act as a rallying point for the remaining Black Unicorns. In a moment, they are at your side, ready and waiting.

You urge the Unicorn forward, bringing your sword to the side. The forces at the keep have set their Pikes in the ground, huddling behind their shields as they start to fire their Blast Pikes. Their shots grow infrequent and weak as they run out of ammunition for their fearsome and advanced weapons. That suits you just fine! You're already sick of these annoying weapons, and you'll gladly take an opportunity to hit them when they've got nothing left!

You shout, filling the air with your battle cry. The Unicorn responds to your fury by speeding up, the magic spilling out into the surrounding area. It goes faster and faster until the both of you practically disappear from sight, only leaving a red blur in your wake as you make straight for the Imperial shield wall. You look down at the Unicorn to see its black color fading away, being replaced by a shining, pure white coat. Magical lines of power course around it, flashing the same hue as your sword's aura. You see now, the Unicorn is absorbing your strength to go faster. Well, that's fine by you! You charge down the shields, the Unicorn's horn plowing straight through their point guard. The men are cast aside by your speed or trampled underfoot as the Unicorn continues past them as if they weren't even there.

You turn back to see the Black Unicorns mopping up what remains of the Imperial forces. You have doubts about their combat prowess, but with the Imperials so decidedly broken, you can't imagine that they'll fail. You call for the Unicorn to stop, but it doesn't listen, climbing up the steps without a pause in the action.

'No, my love is close! I won't rest until my master is free!'

Well, you'd like to see who this person is. There's been a week long battle fought over them, so they better be impressive. The Unicorn eventually reaches a large, heavy gate at the end of a hallway and nods to you. The door is glittering with magical runes and constructed of a strange, opalescent metal. You wonder to yourself just how all this works, but figure that without Tayka here, there's no way you'll get a straight answer. The Unicorn nudges you with its nose, calling your attention back to reality. Apparently, this is your job.

Well, the battle's over. While you'd like to do some dramatic flourish to cut down the door, you're not sure if someone may be on the other side. You raise up your hand and knock loudly on the door.

"Yeah, yeah, shut up! I'm still here, okay? Damn!"

You raise your eyebrows and look to the Unicorn, who nods at you. Well, you've got to open this thing now. The question is...how? You put your hand on the door and start to trace along the carvings. It seems to light up at your touch, and a small receptacle opens up in the door. Seems you could fit something in here if you wanted...

Through a remarkable process of elimination, you try your sword. There is a bright glow and a low hissing sound as the door seems to dissolve. You look inside the room to find it actually quite cozy. There's a fluffy bed, plenty of light from candles, plush carpeting on the floor...even a toilet in a small side room. You see that there's a selection of dried meats and a sink with running water. You'd be bored, but this room would be quite liveable.

Your eyes fall on upon the room's only occupant. It's a woman, maybe a little older than you, wearing the same jacket as the men outside. Her hair has been slicked back, and it runs down to her waist in length. A red handkerchief is tied around her neck, and you see sharp brown eyes glare at you as you enter. At her hip, you see a curved sword dangling in its sheath.

"So what, you the new guy here to try to convince me? Well you can piss off! Screw the Empire, this King ain't gonna bow!"

She raises up her middle finger at you and sticks out her tongue. It looks like she has the wrong idea here, but maybe you could play around a bit...

You climb into the saddle and extend your hand to the woman. You tell her to get on the Unicorn if she wants to live, striking your best pose. How's that, huh? You're pretty confident that you were cool. The woman stares at you for a moment, blinking a few times. Then all of a sudden, she doubles over, laughing her brains out. She falls on the floor, snorting and giggling as she tries to get control of herself. Hey, come on now. She's really hurting your feelings here!

"Sorry, sorry. You just sounded like a retard. What was that? Did you think I'd swoon or something?"

Uh...honestly, you were hoping that something to that effect would happen.

"Well you sure screwed up," she wipes a tear from her eye and stands up, "I am Karla, King of the Beasts, wielder of the Calibur Astalon, leader of the Black Unicorns. It's good to meet ya, stranger."

She pushes you aside and takes the reins of the Unicorn. It whinnies and starts to lead you out of the castle. Karla can't stop chuckling the whole way down, occasionally mocking your speech and pose to herself with a toothy grin and rosy cheeks. As you reach the outside gates, she gasps.

"Whoa-hoh! Holy hell, man! The entire fourth army was stationed here! What kind of army did you bring?"

You shrug and tell her that the Black Unicorns really helped you out, including the very mount you're riding. More importantly, you've got to find your friends. You've had a really long black out and really need to catch up with them.

"What, these useless losers? Defeat the fourth army? You're pulling my leg!"

"He's right, Big Sis," Avan runs up to you, waving around his spear triumphantly, "With Bro's help, we stomped these Imperial dregs and got you back! He was even able to ride the Unicorn!"

Karla jumps off the Unicorn and smiles, "Okay, now I'm interested. Who the hell are ya, stranger?"

You tell her your name and where you're from. You try to leave out how you've got a Calibur and everything, but her jaw immediately drops.

"Ekard? The Drunken King? You've been tearing the whole Empire up for a month! I started my little rebellion here when I heard you weren't gonna take it lyin' down anymore!"

You're not really sure she understands how that all went down...

"This is incredible! I knew this good-for-nothin lot couldn't have busted me out of there, but to think the Drunken King came to rescue me himself. You don't know what this means to me, Bro!"

What? More of this Bro nonsense? Not her too...

"So you're lookin for your friends, right? Well why don't you let my pathetic underlings find em for you? You can stay here a few days, get your head on straight, and we'll find a few leads."

>Sure.
>No, you think you'd better move on ASAP. Avan just needs to tell you where you came from.

Note to self: don't touch booze ever again.

Woah woah woah. Let's not go crazy there anon.

>Sure.

We might be retard strong, but a group of people can cover a lot more area.

Note to self, stop getting drunk, it ends in month long rampages.

Okay we've learned two things so far
1. Stop being so indecisive
2. We're a fucking alcoholic
>No, you think you'd better move on ASAP. Avan just needs to tell you where you came from.
>>
>>31672865
Luckily enough alcohol can solve one of those problems.
>>
>>31673010
Technically it solves both.

Okay, let's call the vote here. I have to work tomorrow, so I have to end the thread here for now. I MAY have time to run tomorrow, but I also owe DXQ some time this week.
>>
>>31673069
It wasn't clear, so I'll do one last post for the night.

No, no. You have no idea where your friends are, and apparently you've left more than a big enough trail for someone to find them. You need to get moving and find them as soon as you can. If Avan can just tell you how he found you, maybe you can piece something together and start retracing your steps. Avan frowns, putting a hand to his chin. After knocking his head around for a few minutes, he eventually snaps his fingers.

"That's right! I found you coming in from the north road! That means you could have only come from the Demon Woods or the Kici Pillar City! I don't know any more besides that, Bro, but I hope it helps."

That will have to be enough. You give Avan and Karla a nod before you start to head off. Before you get a few steps, you feel someone pull on your cloak. You turn and see Karla giving you a big thumbs up.

"You really saved my skin back there, Bro. It's going to take a while for me to get my kingdom back under control, but once I do, you can count on my help. I, Karla, the King of Beasts, will always be your ally!"

"Bro, let us help you out, even a little bit! Here, take my horse!"

Avan leads his steed over to you and gives it a few pets. You get in the saddle and set the horse to a trot, waving goodbye to the strange group. You head up the north road for a few hours, watching the smoke and fire of the battlefield fade into the distance. Eventually, you reach a fork in the road. The first heads into a deep forest in the distance, and this can only be the Demon Woods that Avan talked about. The other fork must lead to the Pillar City, though you can't quite see it in the distance. It must still be a good few days away... You shake your head, your destination can only be:

>The Demon Woods
>The Pillar City of Kici
>>

>The Demon Woods
Obviously this is the "dangerous" option OP would never expect us to go here because this is the right way.
Plus the witch would come here instead of going to the city seeing how she ran an apothecary and was a witch plus easier to hide
>>
>>31673481
>The Pillar City of Kici
Weren't we supposed to lo0king for some pillars or something anyways? For once my poor memory is entirely justified in character.

Anyways, at least going towards a city we can ask for news and see if we're on the right track.
"So, did a drunken King go one a bender through here?"
>>
>>31673481
>The Pillar City of Kici

I like pillars in architecture, I especially like how they look when they start falling over.
>>

>The Pillar City of Kici

Alright, that's the vote. Next time, we'll head to the Pillar City of Kici. I wish this thread could have been longer, but moot ate up so much time today. If it's still alive tomorrow afternoon, we'll get started on the pillar city. Otherwise, I'll try to remember to archive it before I go to bed.

A fun quest, thank you for running.

How exactly does one confine a god to a shrine? They aren't exactly easy to manhandle.
The only method I can think of is them being dependent on faith to continue existing, and even then they can just go around smiting to get that.
>>
>>31687594
Force. Originally, armed guards and Knights would be stationed at Shrines to keep them in. After a while, the gods accepted being confined and the only guards stationed are honor guards and the like. A god's magical powers typically aren't as suited to direct combat as a monster's, and monsters are still hunted for trade and sport.

I'm starting to realize that gods in this setting aren't the instruments of power that Gods usually are.
>>
>>31688832
Generally not. They're sacred and valuable, but not inherently deadly or stronger than humans.
>>
So no more today?
>>
>>31691052
How many people are even here?
>>
>>31691133
Dunno, but I just stumbled in.

Fingers crossed we continue.
>>
DXR do you have an endgame planned out for Double Cross quest, or are you just going with the a vague idea of an ending?
Because personally things seem to be reaching a breaking point in the story.
>>
>>31693725
He's discussed the ending with some other QMs in the hugbox.
>>
>>31693725
We are approaching the climax, yeah. Another arc or two.
