>regen 4 hp (31/81)

You use Suicide Squad!

An army of explosive shades burst out from your form - some of them your duplicates, others clones of humanity. They fly across the field like a living minefield.

You leap forward into the mix, determined to keep Erebus busy so Humanity can keep this field intact.

<ENOUGH.>

A wave of inverted light radiates out from Erebus. As it strikes your shades, they vanish, dissipating into vapor. He charges straight at you after unleashing his power, hitting you straight on. You fly backwards, rolling through the dirt.

>you've taken 3 damage (28/81)

<You've showed me that move before, Shadow. One time too many.>

The field shifts under you.

When you stand again, you're on a featureless white plane - right back where you started. Only Erebus, standing a few dozen feet away, gives you the sense that you're standing on something flat. His aura flickers - but not as fiercely as when this battle first began.

<You have your shards,> he says. <So no more tricks. I'm going to rip you into your component pieces.>

He starts forward. A magical spell charges in his right hand.

What do you do?

HOLY SHIT I MISSED THE LAST THREAD AND JUST CAUGHT UP TO THIS ONE AND THIS IS AWESOME AND HOLY SHIT ALL CAPS!

SM please. Here is an adorable picture of a purple gryphon-thing to slake your wrath.
>>
- Sir Donovan Flint - A knight of Dobshire, the capital of Arland, and fourth son of the lord and ruler of Arland. Wears adamantium half-plate and wields a two-handed longsword enchanted strongly with the wind element. He also wears a magical cape that repels magic, especially that of the Shadow element. 29 years old.

Sir Flint is an exceptional fighter; his skill is built from hard work and experience. He can enchant his blade with light magic to give it a powerful cutting edge, possibly his most useful skill. He can also make a small light and shoot a weak projectile of light magic. He is capable of healing, but it's an unrefined skill and drains him greatly.

Erebus's Nightblaze slams into your budding spell. The force of Water collapses.

I don't think your puny 3rd millenium code would do anything anyway. At least, you probably wouldn't be able to write anything that would have any major impact given the sheer number of variables involved here.

You barely get your head out of the way as the power slams into the whiteness behind you.

There's no sound of destruction, no torn ground, no crater. The void bombs simply continue down through the floor and vanish into the infinite whiteness.

The world shudders.

You're underwater again.

A huge pressure pushes down on you. You glance around. It's as if someone replaced the floor with sand and then filled the rest of the space with water. <Humanity?>

<I figured an ocean was our best bet!>

<Still fighting, Shadow?> Erebus says. <Still struggling?>

<You're the one playing games!> you shout at him. <The actions you took started a war that weakened the barrier! We're at the threshold of destruction because of you, not Chaos!>

<I've had enough of your philosophy debates.>

His aura shrinks. It stops flickering, and settles on his skin, a calm, dark film.

His eyes turn up to look at you. The dark points of light are as dead as his voice.

<Shadow,> Humanity cautions. <He's up to something.>

You know that look. You've -felt- that look. <...he's gone Berserk.>

Erebus charges straight for you, propelling himself by digging into the sand as much as swimming forward.

<Maker!>

A ball of earth gathers in your hand. It's like sludge, designed to stick to the enemy and drain their strength - but a new power washes over it. Your palm cracks with the white-black crystal of Maker, and the ball reforms, spinning, tightening itself into a more efficient projectile.

You Blink.

Erebus Blinks with you - just like you expected.

You Blink behind him.

His arms waver through open water. You drive Erode straight into his back. Brown light coats his aura, dampening its power.

>mana: 49/90

You use Darkness within.

Your vision starts to haze over, until there's a darkness at the periphery. You only see Erebus.

And you're here to wipe him out.

You swing your fist. His own collides with yours, knuckle on knuckle. The impact is strong enough to send a pressurized sphere of water outward from the two of you. The tiny vaccum implodes inwards, sending a shockwave through the ocean.

Retribution shines in your limb. Veins of white chaos twist up your elbow. Erebus's arm crumbles backwards, and your strike carries through to hit his body, hitting hard enough to bend him sideways.

You pound him again, and again. He's fast. His blades meet yours, he deflects your stabs. He follows your every movement. But even though he's fast enough to keep up, you're far stronger.

You grab him, and drive him into the sand. You drag him forward along the sea bottom, smash him through a wall of coral, and then ram him headlong into a boulder.

He tries to ink out of your grasp. Another arm, powered by Retribution and instinct, arcs up, then down, grinding him into the mud.

The brown light on his skin fades - faster than usual - but you've already got the advantage. You turn your arms into ugly saws and cut him to pieces as other hands continue to punch at him.

He's stubborn. As resilient as you are. He nicks at you, cuts your arms, rips some free from your body. He gets back up on a knee.

A white-sheathed fist blows his leg inward. A vaccum ball echoes out from the point of impact, and the water implodes again. You grab him as he falls, throw him under you, and stomp on him as if you're trying to shove him through the sand itself.

You reach for your hammer.

It appears in your hand. The outside glows with an angry light. You raise the weapon high.

<You chose this.>

Violet light forms a cube around the struggling form of Erebus. You slam Hammer home. The space containing him implodes.

The world wavers.

------
------

You're back on the featureless white plain. Humanity burns next to you, staring at the barely-twitching form of Erebus. You step forward. This is the power you need - the power you came here for.

<What are you doing?> Humanity asks. <Finish him. Use me. Burn him to ash.>

<We need his power, Humanity. I didn't destroy Temerity, either. I can't destroy Erebus.>

<You can't consume him. You heard him, you know what he is - it's not worth the risk. We'll gain all the power we need by assuming full control of Vigil.>

<Is that your balance, then?> Erebus says. His voice is weak, but he can still move, just barely. <Destroy everything in your path. Yes. True balance.>

<Don't listen to him! He's not like Temerity, he's not part of us!>

<You'll never save Venia without me,> Erebus says. <But I don't care. End it. End it, Shadow. My life has no meaning. Not anymore.>

<I have to consume him,> you say.

<He's trying to trick you! Don't let your guard down, not now!>

<End it!> Erebus shouts.

What do you do?

You roil over Erebus, and steadily, you absorb his essence, take in his strength. You can feel it surging through you, bringing you to new heights -

Humanity's flame flickers, and dies. <SHADOW!!>

<The first thing we need to do,> Erebus says, <is get rid of that.>

The black crystal of humanity drops. It clinks to the white floor.

<You did a very good job,> Erebus says. And suddenly, you aren't consuming him. He's consuming you. <All the way to the end.>

<What is this?!>

So 66 is not good enough, meaning that the chance of getting a success on each die was less than 1 in 3.

Assuming that the DC was something more like 75, we would need to hit a 1 in 4 chance 2 out of 3 times.

The odds of doing that are the odds of succeeding all the rolls, plus the odds of each of the combinations where we have one failure.

The odds of all three succeeding are 1 in 64. The odds of a combination where we get a single success is 9 in 64. So the total odds that we would succeed were 10 in 64, or about 15%. And that's assuming that the DC was 75. If it was 80, the odds would be even worse.

And with each failed attempt, the DC gets higher.

I suspect that we are now in single digit percent chance of success.
>>

Let me break down the decision.

We warn our allies. Erebus either scours Venia clean, or our allies manage to fight him off, and then Chaos breaks out shortly afterwards.

We try to fight, we lose because the DC is probably 90 or so, and Erebus proceeds to scour Venia clean.

Fuck it.
>>
>>31674083

This is really our only prayer - that we manage to keep a shard of ourselves alive with Chaos and consume Vigil's network from within.
>>

>>
So that's it. We finally lose. We end up being the ones devoured.

Warning them won't do them any good. The last time they fought against Erebus, it nearly tore the world apart. Without the other Elemental lords, they wouldn't last a day. Erebus gets his wish; he'll be alone again. Probably forever.

I hold no grudges. It's been a lot of fun.
>>
See >>31674053
For the odds.
Success resisting Erebus is extremely unlikely. You would have better odds playing Russian roulette with five bullets.

We should warn our allies, get them to fuck us/Erebus up, and that might change things up enough to have a chance.
>>

This isn't the end. For some reason everything thinks the quest will end if you're consumed.

SM, I want to let you know that no matter how this ends, you're still beautiful.

Even if everything that we've worked so hard on and tried to create comes crashing down around us as we pathetically try and fight back, but there is no fighting back. This is The Happening.

There are no breaks. There are no stops.

This is it.

Killing him outright was the safer choice that gave up the possibility of more power. It would have meant not having these high DCs here, but everything else afterwards would be harder comparatively.

Consuming him was the high risk high reward gambit. It lumped high DCs onto us now in order to possibly have everything lower later.

You shout out of yourself, into the void. You shout for the ally who said she'd be there in your time of need.

<HECATE!>

Your voice rings out into the emptiness. Your thoughts, your hopes, travel into the distance.

You hear no answer.

<Not from here, Shadow. Not from the depths of my fortress.>

He pens you in, subsumes you. The white landscape of the virtual reality fades away.

You see the crystal of Humanity lying on the floor, still, silent. You reach for it, grasp it. But it has no power to offer you, not now. But it's something to hold onto.

<Did you ever really think you'd win?> Erebus says. <I'll pen you in like I penned in Chaos, all those long years. You will never see the light again.

The world goes dark. And warm. And quiet.

Far away, you think you feel a bit of Spirit.

You are Abigail Fang, and something is wrong.

You can feel it. Something inside of you is afraid.

It's the banshee. She's worried.

"Something's wrong," you say. "Something..."

"What?" Auriel asks. "It's only been a half-hour, Abby. I'm sure he's fine.>

You're seated on a chair you brought with you, near the hatch where Shadow left. You tap the armrest with a finger. "I don't like this. Is the Jump Drive charged?"

"It's not ready to fire, but it's charged."

"Highest, can you do me a favor?"

Auriel sighs. She grabs the nearest intercom box. "Engines, this is the captain. Get the Jump Drive ready to fire."

"Aye aye."

Auriel hands up the intercom. "Better?"

"Yeah. A little."

Adavan jerks upright.

"Lien?" Sir Flint asks. "You ok?"

<This is Hecate,> Adavan says. Her voice echoes out from him. <I am speaking through him. Something is wrong. Shadow has been defeated.>

You leap to your feet. "What?!"

<Calm yourself, my child. Your must return to Venia immediately. I have little power in the void. If Shadow is alright, he will survive there alone for a time. If otherwise...leave. Leave, now.>

Adavan slumps back into his chair. A moment later, he stretches back. "That's always annoying. What did he say?"

Auriel grabs the box. "Set coordinates for the edge of Venia, now! Jump immediately!"

"Aye, gotcha."

"Why not inside?" Donovan asks.

"I don't want to risk jumping straight through the Skysever. We know we can ride it out through the outter barrier."

"It's Shadow!" someone points. "He's back!"

You stare out the small window in the hatch leading to the hall. Two eyes stare back at you.

"That isn't Shadow," you whisper.

"It feels...cold..." Sir Flint presses his hands outward. "Auriel, make a shield sigil that I can push my power through."

Auriel doesn't hesitate. Immediately, Sir Flint shoves a massive amount of Light into her sigil. A wall of magic coats the door.

And then, the darkness is there, without sound, without warning. A condensed ball of Order smashes through the Light. <So, these are Shadow's companions. It'll be fun hunting you through his own airship. I have a thing for playing with my food.>

"What did you with to Shadow?!" you shout.

<I buried him where Chaos will never reach him again,> the creature says. <And now, you die.>

The ship leaps.

You feel like your skin is being pulled away from your body.

<I didn't expect that.> The voice echoes in your soul. <But I'll see you soon. Abby. Sabby.>

The Nemesis slams into place before the barrier. The ship rumbles as you crash through the Winds around Venia. You race up to the bridge, closely followed by Sir Flint, Auriel, and Adavan.

Ila, Tyrael, Steward, and Hemmelus are already there. Steward turns to look at you. "Councilor Fang, what is happening?"

"No time! Tyrael, punch it!"

"Heh, you got it, councilor." He shoves the throttle forward. The Nemesis jumps into the crackling thunderclouds.

A tremendous clang rocks the entire ship.

"That wasn't the storm," Hemmelus says.

"That's not possible!" Auriel shouts.

The ship rocks, again, again. You know it's trying to tear through the hull.

You hear groaning steel, and start to think it might be successful.

Lightning crackles over the windows as the Nemesis enters the full body of the skysever. You seen green Wind flicker. It's harsh - harsher than you've ever seen it. Dozens of skulls are flying at you, the howling spirits of mages sacrificed to power the ultimate spell of vengeance. For a moment, everyone on the bridge is frozen.

The spirits pass up and over the window.

"...what was that?" Ila asked.

"They're going after that thing!" Auriel says. "It was made for Shadow mages!"

"But Shadow enchanted this ship," Adavan says. "How - "

"Shadow wasn't all order. His magic was different. He was different!"

I thought Hecate was a woman...a woman-elemental, whatever you know what I was trying to say.
>>
The howl turns into an angry shriek, and then a bloodcurdling chorus of anger and hatred.

And then, the Nemesis is through. Auriel elbows Tyrael back and wheels the Nemesis around. You grab a railing to hang on as the ship rotates.

The storm clouds shake. And then, a massive black splotch appears amongst them, slamming into the Winds. The very air vibrates with a heavy bass tone, as if the world's largest gong has been struck by the world's largest hammer.

The black power vanishes, and then strikes again. The air trembles. The feeling resounds in your chest. But the Winds hold.

Again, the Shadow strikes. And again, it's driven away.

And slowly, the sound fades.

"By the elements," Hemmelus says. "The skysever. It's protected us!"

<Indeed.> You all turn. Hecate is standing next to Adavan, shining in all her glory. <I am glad you have returned safely. We must move swiftly to counter Erebus. I do not know how long the sky engine will sustain the strain of his full might. Perhaps the Staff can be used to reinforce it.>

"How did you get on the ship?" Auriel asks.

"Where my children are," Hecate says, placing a hand on Adavan's shoulder, "so am I, angel."

"...that was Erebus?" you ask. "No." You feel the tears rolling down your cheeks. "What...where's Shadow? What happened to Shadow?!"

<He has been subsumed by Erebus. He has failed.>

"What does that mean?!"

<It means,> she says, <that if we want him back, we will have to proceed very carefully. I sensed his last thoughts as he called out to me for aid, when he knew his defeat was inevitable. We have hope, still.>

"...hope," Hemmelus says. "We have you, my Lady, but with all due respect, you cannot defeat him alone."

<No. But there is one thing Erebus feared.>

"What is that?"

<The might of every elemental lord combined.>

Except he didn't fear them, he was just trying to avoid a 0.000034% chance that utilising his full power and wiping them all out in seconds would break the barrier.

>The players will spread vitriol and anger to other posts, and make the whole board unpleasant. Not because they are bad people. Just because they hate whatever happened so much. You cannot return to how it once was. The happy days are over. Expect one of the Trifecla for sure. Shadow Quest is undergoing a constant Shitnado and will probably keep going until Flint is fixed or the quest ends.

>>10/10: The Great Brown Spot.
>The Great Brown Spot is a theoretical shitstorm. Psion Quest was the largest shitstorm that the questing community could shoulder alone. But professionals have studied the shitstorms, and have come to one conclusion. There exists a level above The Mother Shitstorm. They have dubbed it The Great Brown Spot. This will have all of the qualities of The Mother Shitstorm, but it will spread. It will infect the Quest Thread Generals, it will go to the hugbox, it will even spill over into the board proper. The constant raging torrent of solid and liquid fecal matter will even attract greater powers. Moot himself will look upon such an unholy abomination, and create a board for separate quests. This Shitstorm will create the questing board. And it gets worse. All quests on all other boards are banned. The acronym for it is filtered, and any who try to post it get autobanned. I pity all who must live through such a thing. But luck is with us, and there is no such Brown Spot in sight. A word of warning though. There exists a single quest currently undergoing a constant Shitnado that may climax in a Great Brown Spot. Do not let Shadow Quest reach this level.

It sounds like he has to move Vigil into position. It will probably take a bit before it's ready to destroy Venia.

Erebus said he can wipe out everything in like 2 minutes and 30 seconds once we weren't standing in his way, this is over.

He said that so we would want his power.

Inb4 Erebus changed his own memories and the Core of Chaos is actually ascended humanity.

>>31675294

It's Abby-Sabby quest, for the most part, but I might throw in extra scenes if needed. Shadow has the advantage of being able to get around very quickly, so I never needed to switch perspectives. You could always be where it was important to be.

You'll get her character sheet next time.

>>31675315

30 threads out, using the Sword of Damocles to achieve this result sounded pretty good. I felt like cackling and rubbing my hands together.

But then, when you were standing in Vigil, learning everything that there was to learn, I realized that I was really glad that I didn't have the sword anymore. Seeing all the player speculation, I felt like your agency was truly restored, I'd put down the rails for good, that it was finally the open-ended finale and that you'd do whatever you needed to do.

I tried to warn you, hint at you, guide you away from consuming him. I showed how much raw power had when your fight with Erebus started - how he was able to start corrupting you right off the bat, until Humanity intervened to save you. I tried to give you all the power you might need up front with the shard completion program. I tried to show how despite having all your shards he had a tremendous amount of control over the world. In your conversation, I emphasized how you were just his program, possibly subject to things you didn't know about.

But when I called that vote I did realize that it looked just like the Temerity situation. I wasn't sure if my hints would be enough to overturn the thought that, if something worked before, it would work a second time. My gut told me you were about to consume Erebus. Maybe some of you thought I didn't have the balls to take it this far. I dunno.

But here we are. Luckily, even now, there is hope for man, because I still have my semi-worked out ideas from the dark times.

Hecate knew the epic sigil didn't actually require elemental lords. Probably she'll instruct Auriel to draw a light sigil and tell Flint to go nuts.
>>
>>31675461
This isn't fun. This is wading through despair.

I'm just sort of ambivalent about the whole thing right now. I can only assume SM created his narrative without realising that key variables we don't know about and can't see are the only thing which makes the situation salvageable, and so what we've been left with is an equation where the only possible outcome is suffering, because it is missing half of it's functions.
>>
You know what else wasn't around in Erebus's time, that might prove an enormous thorn in his side?

Steward.

He's an AI, which is something humans never really worked with, and we have given him EXTENSIVE opportunity to study us and how we work.

But he didn't.

I look forward to wading through the despair SM. I've enjoyed the quest up to this point, and still do, despite some bumps in the road.

>I tried to warn you, hint at you
I'm not upset or anything with how things turned out. I will say that it was difficult as a player to understand how anything would work out in the cyber-realm. There seems to be no fundamental reason as to why Humanity could bend the rules sometime, and not at the end. The whole "I have a counter specifically set if you you try to consume me" was pretty cliche. But so it goes, and here we are. I believe in the SM.

It can't be helped. Playing in a quest is accepting that you're only one of many people voting on the direction the story takes.

The possibility exists that all those people are going to pick the bad option at the worst time.

I'd be mad as well if the choice basically ended in a GAME OVER: NO CONTINUE, but it didn't, and the story continues. The creativity and time invested are still there, have shaped the story up until this point, and we have more story left to enjoy. Both it's ups, and downs.

Besides, It's not like it's totally inconceivable that Shadow wouldn't have picked that option. It could have been worse.

Just want to point out to you guys that beyond the whole "use the other Elemental Lords to seal the barrier" plan Erebus showed interest in Abby's mother's humanization when we brought it up as a way to counteract the Chaos Entity.

Since we're playing as Abby now we might want to explore the idea of being a humanized demon since I'm thinking getting rid of the demons as agents of Chaos is going to be a necessary part of any good ending/Balance plan.

There was a logical part in me saying that Erebus was right, and that the loss of Venia, while sad, and a big deal, would be preferred to the potential loss of the entire universe, which is a bigger deal.

The voice is still there, but it's smaller now that Erebus is shown to not just be running on that logic, but is also a massive dickbag.
>>
>>31676116
Why did you feel you were railroaded? If a third option becomes popular enough, SM usually goes for that or at least calls for a revote.
>>
>>31676048
I did.

I would've said something about how Erebus would never 'want to die', he's too driven, and thus he was clearly just telling us what we wanted to hear.

But I ALSO wanted to see what stealing his full power would be like, just in case I was wrong about this high risk, high reward choice.

Either outcome, I'd have been gleeful about.
>>
>>31676128

Good night, SM! See you Saturday!

No. I kept suggesting alternative plans. Forging Erebus into a shard. I was reading our character sheet again and scratching my head for a creative way out when the second vote was forced.

Also sharding Erebus was shut down completely as well, and various past suggestions I made.

tl;dr buttmad

He isn't running on logic at all. Well, maybe on a personal level he is, but as an overarching character he's fucking insane.

And personally, I hope he suffers. I need catharsis after this bullshit. Erebus Andersen is a terrible person, and I need to watch this entirely fictional character suffer tremendously.

Okay, bye.

We don't have those powers until we gain access to Vigil itself. Kill or consume were genuinely the only choices.
>>
>>31676217
Yeah really. Not to mention the sheer POTENTIAL for life.

We could become even more God-like and create new species with Order powers.

>No
>Forging Erebus into a shard.
So... the answer is "YES", you wanted to "make up an ability we didn't have" like a "there must be a way!!!!" fucktard.

I don't think there's much left that can make him REJOICE besides breaking the Barrier and releasing Chaos.
>>
>>31676217
Well, Erebus never brought it up as a reason we should give in.

Like if sacrificing Venia meant protecting trillions of sapient beings from Chaos, then maybe I would have heeded his words.

It's possible that Erebus is so warped he couldn't even conceive of that as something anyone would care about, but I doubt it.
>>
>>31676252
And you are part of the problem.
>>
>>31676189
I wanted us to merge and become whatever the combined personality of Erebus and Shadow would be.
Which is why I didn't vote I didn't like ether options.

I'm pretty sure if "Merge" was an option that would have been what everyone voted.
>>
>>31676304
Don't you fucking dare talk to me about the problem.

I voted to kill him. I had to watch as a bunch of shitheaded fucktards flew in the face of common sense and went HURR CONSUME like fucking Darkxis.

I hate Darkxis. He's an obnoxious, irritating little shit.

You should have read SM's posts more carefully.
>>
>>31676321
A program? Merge with its creator? How silly!
>>
>>31676334
>>31676275
The fact you're both raging and trying to force an argument onto me I never made is why you are problem players. I almost ignored you because of your response.
>>
>>31676304
Making shit up and wishing it was real is your problem, not ours.
