You are John James Green, mutant vagrant.

The cold stings your fingers, but it doesn’t hurt, exactly. It reminds you of old, careening skies, so far and heights your current life that they may as well exist in the ancient past. The snowman was a difficult project, even with the abundance of raw material scattered about the scar, coming together slowly and almost painfully. You suppose that’s half of why people generally create in pairs – writer and artist, homeless mutie and other homeless mutie, etc etc. The effort of it.

The other half, you imagine, is the shared satisfaction of having made something. You haven’t felt that in years. It's pretty good.

You rolled up its body and plopped a chest on top of an awkward, distended belly, and then with what was left you made a head perhaps slightly too large. In lieu of shiny black buttons (they don’t exactly grow on trees) you dug a set of stones into its eyes, and then Laura found a few more to suffice as teeth. The scar was short on adorable twigs, so you bent some cords of rebar into acceptable arms, positioning them raised into the air, clearly in praise to the creature’s dark masters.

“It has no nose.” Notes Laura, as you regard the being.

Indeed it doesn’t. The two of you scavenge through the nearby ruins for an appropriate bit of debris, but come up short. Laura does, however, dig up a floppy, star-etched wizard hat, which you secure atop its head.

You step back to appreciate the sorcerous noseless freak that has been born of your handiwork. Laura’s breath glows in the air beside you, her heart stammering ever so slightly.

“What do we do now?” She asks.

“I’m not sure, actually.” You admit. Your recollection of this sort of thing is somewhat groggy, but as far as you remember… you just sort of leave it be. And then someone steals its head and nobody can be bothered to make a new one, so it just sits as a testament to the cruelty of strangers till the cold breaks.

“Just leave it, I guess.”

Laura furrows her brow slightly.

“Maybe someone’ll see it. Maybe not.” You shrug. “The building is really the important bit.”

“I see.” Says Laura, slowly, as though puzzling the words together.

>[X] Go home chill.

Leaving your creation to the mercy of the random passer-by, you head back toward the station, meandering through the snow-swept ruins. Spotting a rather substantial length of rebar, you snap it off the chunk of shattered concrete it was embedded in, explaining that you want to be ready if Mr. Dracula attacks anytime soon. Whatever the guy is, you don’t want to touch his possibly parasitic ass with your bare hands, electrified or not.

One your way back, you pass by the remains of a small fire, a bundle of vaguely reptilian, shed skin crumpled nearby.

“Man.” You sigh. “I can’t believe how weird this place has gotten.”

Laura nods. “We may wish to relocate soon. Any one of these mutants could be a danger.”

You grimace a little. That’s a kinda detached way of looking at it. But it might be true – pretty much anything could be lurking amidst the skyrocketing mutant population. Hell, for all you know, Joseph could be hiding out somewhere in the scar. It’s not a comforting thought to entertain.

“Hey… speaking of danger.” Laura glances up at you. “What about Joseph?”

She cocks her head to the side, a silent question forming in the air.

“I mean, uh…. What was he like? After the cocoon.”

She blinks, and stares ahead once again.
>>
>(2/2)

“He was fast, and strong. He healed nearly at the same rate as I do. And…” Her eyes narrow a little, as if trying to discern the true nature of what she saw that night. “…he caused some manner of innate emotional response in others. It is difficult to explain what it felt like.”

“Like, fear or something?”

“No.” She bites her lip very slightly, and her tone descends into a murmur. “It was something like calm. Like being accepted. Being part of something.”

You can’t help but shudder a little. You think you might know what she means, even if you can’t quite phrase it yourself.

“And I guess Creeper’s been about as hard to track down as him, right?” You ask, a little bitterly.

She shakes her head.

“No. Harder.” After a moment of thought, though, she speaks up once more: “Someone has been supplying Jack within the scar, however.”

You feel the hair on the back of your neck rise. That’s interesting.

When you arrive back at the station you take a well-deserved rest, sitting down beside the stairs and trying to think of nothing. You’ve got that meeting in a few hours, so you don’t want to get worked up over anything and undo all that effort you put into getting presentable. You glance over at your companions and smile a little.

Ask him the extend of his abilities, and if he wishes to train with us, also how he's fitting in with the group.
Give him some base info, about creeper, Typhoon, vampire dude, and scar survival 101, maybe hobo101, if he is interested in listening.
Ask him what he has been doing up to now, and see if he has any useful information. He was pretty knowledgeable about mutant powers before, right? Ask him if he has seen someone like you beforehand, and tips and tricks for controlling new powers.
He has to adapt new powers, since he is absorbing type, his insight would help us a lot.

JJ should show Laura the movie The Iron Giant.

Another idea for Peterwrites: Peter telling Gwen about JJ and their conversation(s) about him. (Sorry if I'm annoying about this topic.)

How strong would JJ be when in Warp Spasm mode?

How strong would JJ be at his weakest Warp-Spasm transformation?

Will this play whenever JJ & Laura train? https://soundcloud.com/miami-nights-1984/reflex-training

JJ's codename is El-ahrairah? "Prince of a Thousand Enemies"

In the HMQ verse, have they made the Spider-Man movie yet?

Was the Terry that blew up due to Jack overdose Terry Raymond? I couldn't find any other relevant Terrys.

Are JJ's ears more visible now that they're more elf-y?

For good fucking reason I should add.
Laura ended up getting tortured in a furnace and JJ got his eyes plucked out/trapped in a cocoon and Noriko had skin in her arm scarred for life.

I think it was pretty good call to send him back home, he couldn't have added anything to the fight.

>[X] Lucas.

Rolling small thoughts between the gears of larger ones, you spot Lucas in the corner of your eye, emerging from the opposite platform. You still don’t know all too much about him, other than that he apparently has little in the way of anywhere to go, and he appreciates a good Godzilla flick. That’s partially your busy schedule’s fault, you guess, but in all honest, Lucas just doesn’t seem to talk too much. He’s got a sort of calm sense of evasiveness about him, like light strobing through heavy fog.

Occasionally, though, you get the impression that that complacent veneer is just that – a thin tarp under which deep beds of explosive anger are buried.

Heaving yourself up, you head over to intercept the younger boy on his way toward the others.

“Hey.” You nod toward the arch from which he emerged. “What’s up?”

“Just doing a little exploring.” He states. “Need to stretch my legs occasionally, y’know?”

You grin broadly. “Yeah, most definitely.” You shit topic with the assistance of an awkward cough. “Listen… I’m sorry about being an asshole back before I disappeared. But you really, really didn’t want to have been there.”

He looks down, turning something over in his head.

“Yeah… I get it, I mean…” He trails off into silence for a moment. “I mean, I know I’m just a kid, but I can help…”

“Right. Which is what I wanted to talk about, actually.” He glances back up at you. “The Hellions are raiding some place Creeper owns, and I recall you wanting some payback.”

He can go up to very very very strong. That level would also be pretty inhuman and possibly not even biped, though.

About triple his base.

Possibly.

That's pretty appropriate.

Nah it was just a guy called Terry.

Yes.

"Most likely will be pretty fucking dangerous, though, warning you now."

And if he says yes, then get Laura to train him in combat? Just a bit of basics, so he can at least stay alive for a while.

He opens his mouth to speak, but you cut him off.

“Don’t get me wrong. I don’t think you should come.” For obvious reasons. But you should probably list them anyway. “You don’t heal like me and Laura, and it’s going to be fucking dangerous. And you’re right – you are a kid.”

For a moment that calm outer shell looks like it’s about to burst right open. You can see it in the movements of those crimson eyes – that ravenous, consuming anger, not concerned with anyone in particular but more than ready to pick a target and let loose. Creeper is probably less a grudge to this kid, and more an excuse to hit something.

“…But, this is personal for you. So I guess it’s your choice.”

He catches himself, visibly swallowing that churning lump of anger, and for just a moment looks vaguely guilty.

“Y-yeah…” He murmurs, staring down at the fist balled at his side. “I’ll come.”

“Alright. But you’re sticking with the Hellions, okay? No running off on your own.” You pause, quietly considering, and add: “If this is gonna become a thing with you, you’re going to start learning to handle yourself. From me, or from Laura.”

You hold out your hand.

“Deal?”

He regards it a little suspiciously, but eventually takes it. You can feel his pulse thrumming through his arm like the purr of a motor.

“Deal.”

And it upgrades our ranged powers, and climbing. Agility is more important right now, as we need the speed to dodge the nasty shit. I wish we could get super speed or something. We can already do plenty of damage to anything that's not inside a tank.
We need ways to deal with phasters/teleporters and most importantly gunmen/snipers.
Seriously phasing 1 or 2 + decent reaction is better than any armor. And makes walls/chains/exc useless. We have no way to deal with that right now, and there are a lot of gunmen out there.

Do we have wings 2 yet?
>>
>>31686459
The text should say "Bork Bork"
>>
>>31686389
That's why we need agility. That way we don't get hit as much.
We can invest eather in bunch of armor, or we can just never get hit.
Agility is pretty shit, as far as skills go tho, but I am phase bro, and still buthurt, so don't mind me. Why you no take ultimate escape?

>>31686403
We are invisible. We don't need anything more than some shock/explosive absorption. We can see the attack coming, and we will probably be able to hide/doge from most tings, and must tings cant see us. With additional agility and strength, we can just rip out a rock or wall piece and put it in front of us. Better than built in shields.
>>
>>31686463
>Do we have wings 2 yet?

No.
>>
>>31686463
sadly no.

Its what I'm voting for though

because not enough people back Druid atm.
>>
>>31686486
We already have agility now, so lets get the invisibility weakness patched before we decide to up that again mindlessly.
>>
>>31686490

I think we should save Wings 2 for later and go with Shadowfield.

Invisibility keeps dropping in fights and we won't need wings when scouting in the building to which Victoria gave us the address.

We could get Wings 2 later, though, definitely.
>>
>>31686489
Ok, wings 2 for reliable escape then. Not sure what I'm going for after that, maybe agility.

>[X] Talk to Gaby.

Telling Lucas that you’ll keep him updated, you stroll over to the group, who appear to have finally moved on from blackjack to some esoteric game somebody probably learned in school (you’re betting Noriko). They glance up, and Nori (ding ding ding) offers to fill you in on the rules of engagement.

“Maybe later.” You assert, not entirely sure how long you can keep up a card game without cheating out of raw instinct. “Gaby, mind if we talk?”

She shakes her head. “Not at all.”

“Uh… mind if we talk alone?”

“Wha-oa!” Sitting on the outskirts of the match, Layla splits into three to finish the intonation as a chorus. Good to know she’s intent on abusing her powers whenever and however possible. “Is Gaby in trouble?”

“No, you butt. Hush up. Gaby?”

She briefly casts her gaze around the group, a note of worry in her eyes, before getting up. The two of you walk a little ways down the platform.

“So, um…” She glances back at Kevin. “What is this about?”

That is a daft argument

Say we hit someone while invis (and we don't drop)
then they counter and strike good because their well trained or what ever, we keep our invis up in muted form and don't pop right out on the opening fisty cuffs.

Not to mention all the other times we might drop from a hard blow, like a blast wave from an AOE weapon etc.

Umm we can now trow stuff, and not punch tings. Big improvement, if someone actually would use it.
But yea, bombs and AOE are problem. I would migrate it with ang/str, not armor, as they offer same amount of active protection, with more benefits.
We do need blast protection. Armor does not give much of it tho. I still think that carrying a shied/being able to rip out stone piece and use it as shield from environment is better idea.
Getting druids sun absorption ting would let us carry shield around, and not be all that tired/hungry afterwards. Str too.

What we need right now is reaction speed, and ability to move out of the way of stuff.

Al tho active defense sucks, if we roll crackbitch.
I guess you are right, we need surefire way to absorb damage wit the way we are rolling.
>>
>>31686896
Exactly!
Hellboy was a being born of hell but uses his gifts to help humanity and reject the demonic beings with his giant right fist and a big ass gun!
She's an apt comparison in this situation. Even if these gifts are 'demonic', there is nothing stopping her from doing good with them until that day you two might find your father's work with mutants.
>>
>>31686986
There's always this.
You could use these to protect vital organs as long as you don't get a direct hit from an explosive and also geointuitive vision + agi should allow bullet deflection to certain degree.

FOREARM PLATES
Requires: Level 3 Claws & Fangs
Cost: 2
JJ becomes capable of protruding a set of armoured bone structures across his forearms and hands. These plates to not cover his joints, but they do provide a certain level of protection to this area, and can be used to block nasty attacks.
>>
>>31686986
WIngs 3 + subdermal = two big shields from your shoulders.
Druid is not required for combat apart from phtosynth 5 which would allow us to break our power limit every now and then.

Sure the throwing is cool, but we don't know about that yet, so until JJ does we have to work with what we have. Not to mention were not always going to have something to throw.

Hey im not against strength or agil upgrades, but right now shadow field and subdermal are the better choices, especially against AOE weapons or just random bad luck.

>[X] All the things.

“I-is this about”–

“Nah.” Actually, you’re not sure what she was about to say. But it’s almost certainly not what this was about. “Look, Laura told you about that Joseph guy, right? The one that was involved my little vanishing act?”

“…She didn’t mention him by name, but… yes…” She knots her clawed fingers together nervously, as if awaiting something awful and possibly incriminating. You get the impression Gaby spends a lot of her life like that.

“Good. This is going to sound... insane… but he knew about my father.”

“Doctor Green?” Her voice lights up. So do her eyes. You can’t help but hate that.

“…Yeah. He knew things about his work, about his past... and he was trying to, I guess, finish what my dad didn’t.” What exactly that is, you’ve no idea. Joseph wasn’t entirely forthcoming about that, despite his various implications. A small part of you wishes you’d spoken to him longer, gotten more out of him… “I’m telling you this because you and are obviously, in at least some way, products of my father’s work. So Joseph could very well come after you if he ever finds out you exist.”
>>
>(2/2)

“Why would he…”

“I don’t know.” You admit. “But he’s insane, Gaby. So you should really start trying to figure out your powers, because you might have to use them someday. If not to keep yourself safe, then Layla or Kevin or any of the others.”

For a moment she just stares at the ground, tiny beads of moisture growing under her eyes. Then, in one quick, shameful motion, she brushes them away and smiles very faintly.

“I thought… when I found something about Doctor Green… it wouldn’t be like this…”

You feel a sympathetic gnawing in the bedrock of your stomach. You may not exactly understand or like her hero-worship of your dad, but you know it’s important to her.

“Look…” You pace your words carefully, biting your lip a little. “I have a friend. He’s pretty smart”– Possibly. But that sounds better than ‘he has access to a computer’ –“and he’s looking into my father for me. So maybe we’ll hear something good from him.”

“Really?”

You nod vigorously, and she blurts out one of those sudden, relieved little laughs.

“Thank you, John.”

Multiple layers. If you put like 5 trashcans in a row, they are bullet resistant. Maybe make makeshift glove/claws for extra arm protection.
As for metal Street signs have some, but the old metal trashcans are the best.
Also helps with pipes/fists/exc blocking, and puts some weight in our punches.
>>31687472
Well we could make that, but bracers are easier to conceal. I would like something like that too, but that might be really noticeable.

I seen people make shields from street signs.
They are not bulletproof, but if you layer them, its still metal wall. If we can manege an inch, it should be bulletproof. Inch of metal (or bit less) is pretty bulletproof.

Checking the time on your phone, you decide it’s time to head out. Saying goodbye to Gaby, you head toward the stairs, stopping briefly beside Laura. She looks up from her quiet meditation.

“Hey. I’m heading out for a bit.” You make to leave, but then a thought strikes you. “Um, just wondering, would you mind teaching Lucas a little about not getting beat up? I just feel like he’s gonna get himself killed otherwise.”

She furrows her brow a little, turning her eyes toward the rest of the group.

“I don’t mind.” She says, at length. “I do not believe the others enjoy my company, however.”

Um… You flounder inside your own head for a second, unsure of how exactly to respond to that.

“Well… maybe…” Think. Think. “This would help with that? I mean, spending a little time with them…”

She answers that she’ll consider it, and you make your way out into the cold, silently berating the winter weather for clinging to New York for so long. Spring should be just on the horizon by now, but the frost and the snow just won’t let up. It’s like the world knows exactly how to make you miserable.

You don’t know exactly where you’re going, but you have a vague idea. It helps that New York is now a patchwork of familiar and unfamiliar scents, winding around you in threads of ten thousand shades and widths and textures, each one adhered to a host of memories, of associations, of things said and unsaid, thought and known and unknown. You let your nose fill in the blanks left by your memory of the area, and soon find yourself turning into a narrow, winding road, the streets lined with old, tightly-packed houses, each one rising a good few floors to make up for their lack of elbow room.

Checking the address once more, you trail down the sidewalk, keeping watch for door number 88.

It doesn’t take you long to find it, but the look of the place doesn’t really inspire much confidence. Sure, it’s all fancy and Edwardian and stuff, but it’s a house, right? It doesn’t really look like an important office where important detective things happen.

Then again, Holmes just had an apartment on Baker Street, right?

Right, well, you’re not knocking on that big old door quite yet. There’s being early, and then there’s being desperate. That was one of the few worthwhile lessons you learned from Creeper. That, and the importance of knowing who you’re dealing with, along with – often more crucially – who they’re dealing with.

Glancing about for passers-by, you wait till the street is clean of human activity, and take a short stroll up the wall of the building. Ideally, you’d just circle it, but there’s no meaningful gap between one house and the other, so instead you just make your way up onto the roof.

It’s all old red tiles and weather-worn brick – there’s even an old-fashioned chimney up there. Making your way across the roof, you glance down over the other side, and are a little surprised to see a balcony veering out a little ways over a small garden. Judging by the indents along the brickwork, there used to be more – meaning this was once a flight of relatively roomy apartments that someone decided to convert into a house.

Huh. This really is Holmes’ place. Except, that’d be more Georgian than Edwardian, wouldn’t it?

You lean in over the wall and press your ear against the old stone. The subtle tensions of the mortar fill your ears, and you sweep them aside, almost like opening a portal through space and time, reaching down into the innards of the building. You hear water boiling, steam hissing, a foot gently tapping at a carpeted floor. Four fist-sized drums, heartbeats, igniting over and over.

Four people, then.

Someone’s tapping away at a keyboard. You can almost hear the words forming, the each key associated with its own singular tone. Given an hour or two you could probably build a steady enough webway of associations to actually learn the sound-language of typing, and know exactly what’s being entered.

Someone leans back on a chair. You hear the wood groan minutely. A female voices rises through the swirling vortex of noise.

“Johnny?” You almost fly straight out of your skin, before rationality catches up to you and you realize that she couldn’t be talking to you. “You kept a journal on the Marko affair, no?”

“Oh, uh…” Male. Somewhat raspy. Drawls in a way you associate with stoners and people who sat ‘dude’ a lot. “Yeah, yeah, it’s all around here somewhere… Or maybe on my pad?”

“I’d like a quick look, if you don’t mind…” Her voice lounges, like something sleek and watchful, something pouring across silk…

“Yeah, uh, it’s…” He pauses. “I’ll get Gert on it.”

The girl titters a playfully. Someone else snickers.

“Well then, if she’s to be indisposed, perhaps you could tidy up some? We have a guest arriving, if you recall.”

Someone else snickers louder.

“Uh… actually, I’ll find it.” Replies ‘Johnny’.

You stay there a little while longer, listening to the sounds of someone heaving stacks of paper around, before checking your phone for the time.

I just realized that wings would probably be the most useful power for if we get the detective job.

If JJ needs to find someone he could just do a flying nose scan of the city while invisible. And, if he's following someone that gets into a car he could just following it from the air. (I'm not saying he's faster than a car but traffic in a big city would slow it down a lot)

>[X] Go knock at the door.

Climbing back around to the street, you take a moment to look yourself over before knocking on the door. It’s not long before you’re hearing footsteps pound their way down a set of stairs, and eventually the door creaks ajar.

You crane your neck around, and are treated partially to the sight of a narrow hallway leading up to a set of stairs, but mostly to a short, frumpy-looking girl with decidedly McGonagall spectacles set atop her nose and pink hair framing her face.

She peers out at you with small, suspicious eyes, scanning you from head to toe. You might’ve been a little unnerved were she not like fifteen or something.

Still, she clearly knows how to look confrontational and abrasive. Her parents must be so proud.

“You the invisible guy?” She asks, her tone flat with the affected boredom of teenagerdom. “JP or JD or whatever?”

>[X] “It’s JJ.”

“It’s JJ.” You say, keeping things nice and formal.

Still, you can’t help but wonder how the hell you could mess up ‘JJ’. Its two damn letters. Technically ONE letter, twice. JP sounds like an abbreviation for some low-brow beer and you’re pretty sure JD was that guy from the doctor show your sister used to watch.

“Gertrude.” She states, swinging the door open. You notice she’s not offering to shake your hand, but you’re willing to chalk that up to fear of hobo plague, rather than general impoliteness. “Does that hood ever come off?”

Stepping in, you can’t help but shoot her an almost-glare (God bless reflective shades, they make these things so ambiguous), pulling back your hood. Your ears twitch reflectively under the unfamiliar exposure, and the girl breaks out a tiny grin.
>>
>(2/2)

“…What exactly do you do here, Gertrude?” You just have to ask.

Her grin, or whatever semblance of a grin this surly teen is capable of, vanishes.

“Everything, apparently.”

She leads you up two flights of stairs, passing by a set of closed doors on both landings. Eventually the two of you come to what was once a large apartment, but hasn’t been for some time. It’s one big room, one side dominated by a low table and a set of couches, while the other looks more like some ancient workaholic’s coffee-crusted office, reminding you just a little of that stuffy room your father used to tuck himself away in. Tightly-bound folders lie sprawled beside a computer desk, where there sits… honestly one of the prettiest young women you’ve ever laid eyes on.

She’s wearing some kinda silky red dress too. And… a domino mask. Brushing her luxurious blonde tresses aside, she glances back at you, smiling almost knowingly.

“Welcome to the Blonde Phantom Detective Agency, Mr. Green.”

“Hey, dude.” Says the voice from earlier, the one marked Johnny. He emerges from behind one of the couches, floppy brown hair hanging across his… mask. His grey and gold mask.

“Uh… what’s with the masks?”

“I ask myself that every hour of every day.” Interjects Gertrude.

“They part of the uniform or something?” You continue, ignoring her. The ‘Blonde Phantom’ (you assume she’s the Blonde Phantom, anyhow) rises off her chair, chuckling very lightly. Her every move is a study in elegance, like she just stepped out of some old-timey flick about classy rich folks, most likely involving gangsters and gumshoes and set sometime during Prohibition.

“Not exactly. We wear them for the same reason there’s no sign up outside. Anonymity is important when dealing with the people we deal with.” She sways over to you, extending a hand. “I’m the Blonde Phantom, obviously. The man of mystery foraging behind our couch is Ricochet…”

He waves with a gloved hand, the outline of a big, dopey smile forming behind his mask.

“…And you’ve already met our intern, Gertrude. She and two of her friends work odd jobs for us.” Her eyes take on a tiny, mischievous gleam. “Their situation is somewhat similar to yours, so I’ve heard.”

Taking her hand, you remove your shades, possibly in some kind of spontaneous fit of classy-lady-induced-politeness.

Her eyebrows rise under her mask.

“Oh my. What immersive eyes you have. And so very much like, well”– She nods over your shoulder, and you detach your senses from her just long enough to sense the approach of heavy male steps across the landing.

A thick, spicy-sweet accent hits your ears:

“Bonjour, mon ami.”

While Raindrop Prelude was always going to be JJ's theme, I recently realized that there's a Quincy Jones song almost custom made for him and Creeper, respectively.

>>
>>31691173
Why would we ever use it willingly when we are not half dead and really angry?
Kinda waste of the points, in my opinion. If it nullified some of the penalties, then maybe, but we are better of getting strength, and calling it a day.
Seriously its a berserk rage, we don't think clearly, and are fucked afterwards. This has too much backfire potential, and only real effect we ever gonna use is probably increased strength.
>>
>>31691252
Agility 3 as well

Is JJ's little mutant commune lacking anything? Mattresses, blankets, ect...?
Is the Ship still toppled over in the port or has it been dealt with? Asking because we could scavenge some good stuff there like beds and such (in the crew quarters not the cargo bins)
Has the orphanage been cleaned out?

>>31691376

We can fly invisible but we need to practice a few more times. We've only tried flying twice. The first few times we try going invisible while flying we'll blink in and out of visibility.

Human After All could be a good Laura theme, I guess, though the tempo's probably a bit fast for the way I write her.

Also, while none of their songs are really theme material any means, it should be noted that Joseph prefers to do science while listening the Beastie Boys.

Before I forget, I tend to listen to some Vangelis while writing this quest. It doesn't suit anyone in particular, but it just has that almost-hopeful ambiance, you know?
