"Leaving Dog at home today?"

"Yup! Papa is taking care of Dog, me and him are on a date today!" Carna answered the house-wives as the two of you walked by. The 'date' she was talking about was an idea she thought up last night, and she was mashing on your window this morning to make you go with her.

"Hm, let's get me some flowers." The entire 'date' so far had been Carna dragging you around to the usual places, and doing the usual things. It seemed she didn't have any idea what a date entailed, but you hardly knew better.

"Ah! Let's go get some bread from the baker!" Carna always ran you ragged by the end of the day, but you didn't mind, if you weren't with her you'd just be sitting at your desk bored.

"I wonder if the lakes are warm enough to swim this time of year..." Carna was running short on ideas, you just sat and waited for her to come up with more, for her there always had to be something happening, but for you, it was enough to just be near her.

"Aaaaah! I'm so bored now!" Carna kicked her legs back and forth, the two of you sat on top of the fences outside town, you watched her incase she lost balance, a common problem when you loitered around here, "Hey! Hey! I have an idea, listen, listen! Let's try kissing!"

It took you a moment to process what Carna had just said, and your face went some shades redder in an instant. The shock sends you reeling, you started to topple off the fence top, but Carna stuck her hand out and grabbed yours, pulling you into her safely. Your face stopping just inches away from her pretty hazel eyes.

"It's a date right! Let's practice!" She beamed her smile at you, leaning a little forward, and you leaning a little back.

"I don't know if this is a good idea..." You sheepishly mumble.

"Don't worry about it, okay?" Those words always made it hard to argue against Carna. She closed her eyes and puckered up her lips, very childishly, very cutely.

You take a gulp and...

>Kiss Carna

>But still sort of worry about it, okay.

>>
You hover back and forth, coming in close to her, then pulling away, back up close, then away again. Taking a deep breath, you make your decision...

"Aaa! I just realized!" Carna's eyes pop open her arms fly out, shoving your chest and knocking you off the fences onto the grass beside them, "If I give you my first kiss, then I won't have a first any longer! Only a second!"

You rub your bottom as you stand up.

"Whew, that was close. I was saving it for a prince!" Carna hops off the fence and stretches her arms, "A mayor's son is kind of like a prince, but only kind of! You have to be at least somewhat like a prince, you know?"

Her non-sensical logic aside, you were a little thankful to have the situation taken out of your hands. Though a little bothered that you'd fought your own thoughts for nothing.

"Why a prince anyways?"

"Well of course, if I'm going to be a princess then I can only kiss princes! That's how it works!" Carna does a little spin, the afternoon sunlight dancing off of her, "Come on! I'm hungry, let's go see what your mom made!"

You stick your hands in your pocket, and follow Carna's lead home. You didn't need her kisses, you didn't need her touch, for you, it was enough to just be near her.

And so the dream ends.

>Year 484 of the Raschan Calendar

Ten years ago you lost her, Carna; with lips like little cherries. Ten years later, no girl has ever caught your thoughts the way she did.

The last two weeks have been awkward ones, after your little bet with Yu'yen, the atmosphere among the students has been a real mess. Rein and Leona have started going to classes earlier with Sheryl, leaving just you and your Lunese friend to brainstorm over his upcoming 'date' with Rein alone. Anlak seems as calm as ever, but you haven't quite been enjoying his company lately.

Worst yet, Rein and Yu'yen's outing after numerous delays was set to be tonight. Yu'yen had no interest in Belgran women, especially Rein who he described as 'A good friend, but definitely a terrible wife'. You had your objections to the latter but you held them to yourself, you were without a plan on how you would help save Rein's fragile heart, worn by years of inferiority to her sister and far too many romance novels.

A scratch to the head brings your thoughts back to the class, Silvest stands on your desk with an annoyed look.

"Now, as I was saying..." The cat teacher makes way back to the front of the classroom, "Demons as you know, reproduce asexually. Although you'll find some demons to be more feminine, and some to be characters of masculine prowess like myself; there are no proper genders among them."

>CONT
>>
"From the sounds of it, you haven't." A quiet jab comes from Sheryl in the corner, Silvest's face looks pained.

"Ahem. New born demons split off from the parent, starting off as tiny balls of chaos. Within hours, the demon will develop form, inheriting powers as well as some memories from it's parent. Sub-contractors will often consume from the infant demon before it manifests to take in the parent's power before the infant develops an identity."

"Have you ever... er, been a parent, Mr Silvest?" Leona asks.

"Well, I've birthed before, but well... I usually eat them."

An uncomfortable air settles in on the class.

"Birthing demons takes power away from the parent, and there isn't much reason to let other demons run around. They take away prey, and with enough power they'll certainly return to consume the parent. Left alone, many of them will be rejected by the world after manifestation if they don't stumble onto a contractor in time... so most demons just eat what they lay." Silvest yawns, and stretches himself out in a very feline manner, "Well, that's enough of that. We'll talk more about this tomorrow, I'm thinking of taking a cat nap in some yarn." Your teacher leaves class, just a few minutes before it would normally end. An improvement over Kita at least, who would let you out as soon as the day started when he was too hungover to teach.

You immediately turn to face Yu'yen's seat, listening in closely as Rein made her way over.

"Hey. We're still doing this today... right?" She shyly avoided his gaze, it was painful to see.

"Yeah. Yeah we are." Yu'yen responded, rather flatly.

"Okay then, I'll meet you outside The Archives in three hours, alright?" She did a poor job at hiding her excitement.

"Yes. Yes you will." Yu'yen's eyes looked past Rein and over to you. Rein skipped back to Leona and Sheryl, it seems that where romance is involved the girls quickly gathered. They left the room together. Anlak was already gone, leaving just you and Yu'yen.

"Okay friend, what's the plan. Today is the deadline on us putting an end to the evil we have wrought." He didn't need to say it like that...

Apologize to Rein about the over-the-top public spectacle of it being at least somewhat our responsibility for getting Yu'yen riled up.

As long as she's able to go into this as an interesting life experience kind of thing rather than taking Yu'yen's public IT WAS TRUE LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT; THY SILKEN HAIR, THY GLEAMING EYES spiel at its word, they'll probably both come out the other side way less upset with the whole ordeal.

If they can both keep a lid on their knee-jerk reactions and keep an open mind, it'll be a positive experience for the both of them.
>>
"Just do it." You slap Yu'yen on the back before picking up your things, "Rein's a..." You think carefully over your choice of words, "Charming woman. She cooks, cleans-"

"Hits hard." Yu'yen interrupts, "Yeah. Fine. I'll work something out after my best friend in all of Rascha leaves me out to dry after getting me into this mess. I bet this is how Nyne felt when The Shepherd killed her sheep."

"We'll explain things properly to her if we can, but just sit through it for her sake." You make ways towards the door.

"What if she REALLY wants me!? I can't settle down yet!"

"You said you were looking for a wife!" You yell over to him from the door.

"Yeah, a Raschan noblewoman! Or a Lunese pure-blood! Or a Daktori whore! Not a Belgran assassin!" He yells back at you.

"Just... don't worry about it, okay?" You leave him those words, making your exit...

...It is out in front of the dorms that you see Leona pacing about, Sheryl sits by the entrance holding Chance in her arms just idly keeping the bookworm company.

"Oooooh! I'm so worried! What if it doesn't work out? What if it works out too well!? Ah, mother would be furious..." You often hear Rein worrying over Leona, but right now you see the opposite happening, "What if she gets pregnant!? Oooh, I'm too young to be an aunt!"

"You're over-reacting." Sheryl says, twiddling Chance's ears.

"Let's spy on them! We'll spy on the date! That's what we trained for right?" Leona says, Sheryl gives her an odd look.

"I don't know if spying on a date is exactly Seeker work..." Sheryl answers.

"Sure it is. The entire reason we're here is because of our curiosities, I'm sure Mr Kita would encourage us to them." Leona says in a matter-of-fact way.

"We're studying to read ancient texts and steal valuable treasures..."

"There's no treasure more valuable than a maiden's heart!" Leona thrusts her chest out. Sheryl sighs and nods.

"You're planning on following them?" You approach the two girls, Leona shrieks when she sees you, hopping back on one foot, her arms freeze up crooked. Sheryl nods.

You'd be lying if you said the thought hadn't crossed your mind, and Yu'yen had suggested it often enough but it might not be the most gentlemenly thing to do to Rein.

"Oooh, please don't tell Rein! She can't know!" Leona claps her hands together and closes her eyes, giving you repeated bows. Sheryl nods.

"Well, I was going to see her first..." You mumble.

"Ah! Don't tell her, please!"

At least part of our expedition was about going out on the town and doing male bonding and assorted Yu'yen-y activities, after all.

Just explain that he was still in Maximum Flirt mode, and that we're pretty sure most of his sweeping-off-of-feet bravado isn't quite as true-to-life as he makes it seem.

>Offer to join the girls to spy on the date

>convince her to take the date as an experience
I'm not sure we should explain that it was all a bet, but we should at least apologize for how over the top Yu'yen was. It's mostly our fault he was in maximum turboflirt mode, on top of a couple drinks.

We just want them to both set aside the mostly needless (if playful) antagonism for one night and have a pleasant time, or god help us we're going to tie ourselves one of those Weave chairs and tell it to run off into the freakin' woods in atonement.
>>
"I won't tell her," You tap the nose of Leona's glasses lightly, "No sense sabotaging myself when I'm going to be watching her with you."

Leona's eyes light up when she realizes what you're telling her, she places both of her hands on one of yours and shakes it up and down, "That's great! The more the merrier."

Sheryl nods.

"I still need to see Rein though, so I'll meet you later." You tell Leona, and she lets loose her clasp on her your hands as you step into the dorm. She doesn't have to hear about the bet from you, but you're sure you can at least ease her in case Yu'yen lets loose with it.

You make way through the main entry and past the little passage into the girl's hall. You knock once, and Rein's voice sounds out from behind the door, "Hold on! I'm not decent!" You can hear things dropping, and soft little curse words sounded out. You wait for some minutes but she doesn't answer. You knock again, and there's a small thump on the door from her side.

A little worried, you reach for the knob, but Rein's shout stops you, "Don't come in!" A little softer she says, "I'm still getting dressed... let's just talk through the door. Who is it, Leona?"

You answer her with your name and take a seat outside of Rein's room, sticking one leg out on the wooden flooring and pulling your other knee up, staring at the wall opposite as you lean back against her door.

"Sorry... I'm just so nervous about today." She whispers through the door girlishly.

"With all the times he's delayed it, I was worried that it wasn't going to happen." Rein says, you can hear her curling up against the thin door that separates the two of you, "I was worried it might be some kind of joke."

"Don't worry about it... okay?" The last word slips out on it's own, you didn't mean to add it.

"Are you sure he's serious? It was pretty loud the way he asked for the date."

Yeah, you don't have the heart to tell her about the bet. You're not sure you ever will, "Yu'yen and I were out drinking before the party, I don't know. We might've gotten into talk about wooing over the drinks, I guess I must've goaded him into going dramatic about things."

"But the date is real, right?" Her voice cracks a little.

"Of course it is." You lie to her, "But don't worry about taking it too seriously, just enjoy yourself. It's a learning experience."

"Yeah, I guess you're right..." She sounds a little calmer, it seems that the little white lie was the right thing to say, "Here I am naked listening to love advice from someone who's spent ten years chasing after an unrequited love."

"It's not like that."

"Oh? Did you ever get a date?"

"Just one before she vanished."

"Oh..." Rein's voice goes quiet, "Sorry about that, it was insensitive of me."

"It's fine." You do your best to make some humour out of it, "I'm sure I'll find her again, she didn't even give me a kiss." You get up from your position.

"Thanks." Rein tells you, before you leave ear-shot.

Leona watches you with anticipation as you return to the entrance, not aware of what you were doing but still eager to hear the results. Chance lays down, his belly facing up and Sheryl just rubs it.

"She'll be fine." You tell her simply, and thankfully she doesn't ask for more than that.

"Okay! Good to hear! Now, I have cloaks in all of our sizes I picked up in case something like this ever happened, and I think if we work fast enough we can catch a pigeon outside and teach it to deliver messages if we get separated! Oooh, I wish Masoch taught us some weaves for trailing people." Leona spits out her words at an amazing pace.

"I don't know about the pigeon..." Sheryl finally says something.

"Let's just try to be quiet when we're following them. I don't think we should worry about them keeping an eye on us." You know that Yu'yen isn't likely to say anything even if he notice you trailing him, and you can't imagine Rein is at her most alert state tonight.

I kind of want to go back and spend some more time with Yu'yen, if only to make sure we're both on the same page.

People've been stressed out these whole two weeks, and some last-minute encouragement (or an opportunity for him to at least take out some of his frustrations on us for getting him into this situation to begin with) could very well help him stop freaking out so much that he decides that enough's enough during the date proper.

He was yelling at us about being worried that this one date might lead to MARRIAGE for crying out loud. We don't want him to be flippant about it or anything, but he's definitely getting more worried than he should be.

"I'm going to see Yu'yen." You tell the girls before leaving the dorms...

...You find Yu'yen laying out on a bench closer to The Archives, a familiar bird, Rum sits on his nose, making small pecks at him in timed intervals.

"Is this really that depressing for you?" You poke Rum with a finger and he hops off Yu'yen onto the ground.

"Yes friend, yes it is."

"It's... literally just a date with a classmate."

"A Belgran classmate! When someone tells you that a Belgran woman is a keeper, he's not saying that she's worth keeping, he's saying that she'll keep you! Men die suffocated in their muscular breasts, their pel-"

You stop Yu'yen there, "I talked to Rein to calm her down about it. Just be yourse... well, less yourself and more of a gentleman. We'll be watching you from behind."

"We?"

"Leona, Sheryl and I."

"Fantastic. Two Belgrans to pummel into oblivion, and Sheryl can greet the valkyrie when she takes me away."

There's really no reasoning with this guy.

"Better behave yourself then." You reach into your pocket and toss a few pieces of bird seed on him, how long does that stuff stay good? Rum flies back onto Yu'yen and aggressively snaps seed off of his body, your friend kicks and screams while it happens.

"Well, I'm going to make preparations on my end. You... you sort yourself out." You go to return to the girls.

Dressed in a dark cloak that Leona insists will help you remain inconspicuous, you listen to her plan.

"Alright. We follow them, remain completely unseen. If you get separated, keep your voice disguised and yell out 'Pudding'."

"Pudding?"

"That was the name of a pegasus I once kept."

"Won't Rein know?"

"...okay, if you get separated, keep your voice disguised and yell out... 'Cookies'."

It seems that without a messenger pigeon, Leona's plan ends there. You, her and Sheryl hush your voices while hidden in the bushes outside the dorm, watching as Rein steps out from it. She has on another unfamiliar outfit, a short black skirt and a dark red sweater. Her bob is tied back into a small ponytail. She takes a deep breath and makes paces to the meeting spot, the three of you make paces following her.

"Ah, you did show up!" Rein says excitedly when she meets Yu'yen at the front. Your Lunese friend looks little better than he did when you last saw him, but at the very least he's cleaned the birdseed off of himself. A few red marks lay apparent on his mid-drift, likely from ferocious pigeon attacks.

"Of course." Yu'yen says, mustering up a smile, "Well, let's go to town. There's a nice little place to eat by the square I found."

The two walk off, and you follow behind them...

>CONT

Despite a little trouble finding good places to hide on the road from The Archives into Deneb, stalking the two is a much easier task than you initially expected.

All the way from the trails into the city square, Rein and Yu'yen talk about little things. The classes with The Seekers, the culture in Belgrand, their favorite Lancet teams. The conversation carries, but it doesn't sound any different from what they'd talk about going to classes in the mornings.

"Should we really be doing this?" Sheryl voices some disapproval of the plan already under-way.

"We're watching out for our friends, it'd be wrong not to do this!" Leona is obviously more excited than worried.

Keeping together using the passing townsfolk and various stands as cover you keep a close watch on the two. Eventually just a little pass the square towards The Calico District, Yu'yen points out the little spot he found. A decently sized restaurant, 'Valae'. Named after the bird goddess of love, curiously.

As you make to go follow them inside, Leona grabs the back of your cloak and pulls you back down, "Wait! Wait!"

"What?" You ask her.

"Valaes is a date spot! You can't just go in alone."

"Well, I thought the three of us were going in together."

"You can't just go in with two girls either! It's for couples, we'd draw so much attention if we went in as a group."

As ridiculous as that sounds, you think you'd best do well to heed her advice...

This has gone on long enough, but I got here too late to have a better plan:

take Leona and maybe even Sheryl aside. Explain that a first date is almost never going to lead to anything, because Rein doesn't even know what kind of person she wants. She's too wrapped up in the IDEA of a relationship and not the person she's talking to. Mention romance novels very clearly when we say taking hammy confessions like that to mean marriage on the first date is a sign of a terrible attitude towards relationships.

Yu'yen is experienced at this, so honestly, the best thing he can give Rein is a lesson on how to take these things maturely. Now-please tell Rein for me, because I can't get through to her like this. It didn't exactly work the last time I told her.

As for Yu'yen himself...let those 2 have a proper, ADULT date, and get to know each other better. He's nervous himself because of all the misunderstandings that might be happening.
>>
>>31718189
The fuck you saying nigga why must you hate fun.
>>
"Couples eh... well, I guess I'll keep a watch out here." You say.

"We can't just sit around outside while who knows what is happening in there!" Leona argues.

"We won't. I'll keep a close eye out here and the two of you will go watch them." You place a hand on Leona's shoulder and give her a look to tell her how serious you are.

"What? We're both girls!"

"And Deneb is a progressive place. Quick, before they escape!"

Leona and Sheryl get up and exchange looks, they take simultaneous breaths and begin to walk towards the door.

"You won't fool anyone that way! You look two play yard friends! Hold hands!" You direct them.

Sheryl gives you a dirty look and grabs Leona's hand, Leona's cheeks flare up. The elf girl sighs and leads the other into Valae.

It's about five minutes into your wait outside that you run out of bird seed to count. Interested in making sure things are going according to plan, you skirt around the side of the restaurant. You find a tree positioned nicely to see inside the windows, and skillfully scale it when you're sure no eyes are on you. Nestling up behind the leaves, you spy into the restaurant.

It seems that Rein and Yu'yen are out of your sights, but you can count on the girls to watch them. You must instead take on the duty of making sure nothing bad happens to the two ladies. Leona and Sheryl are seated, their food hasn't yet arrived. Sheryl just blankly looks away into the restaurant, Leona fiddling with her silverware.

Although Sheryl seems to all business, it appears that something has gotten Leona distracted. She takes regular sips from the glass of water in front of her, biting her lower lip between each one and shifting her eyes nervously. You slowly climb forward on the branch, hoping to come close enough to listen in.

Leona's lips move, and you put to work your lessons on lip-reading, "You're really cute today Sheryl." You assume she says.

"Cute's the only thing people ever call me, it's nothing compared to you Leona." You assume Sheryl says.

"Oh stop it, you're just flattering me..."

"Flattering? No, I mean it. Your breasts are so voluptuous, and those lips of yours, why I bet they taste like fresh strawberries."

Leona is about to answer whatever Sheryl just asked when the server puts down a plate of food between them, and two smaller ones in front of each.

"I've never had a girl say that to me..." You do your best to make out Leona's words through the glass.

"I bet there're a lot of things you've never had a girl say... or do to you Leona." Sheryl reaches out and takes a haunch of meat from the largest plate, "I'll show you what I want to do to you..." She nibbles on the food, her little tongue exploring the flavour.

Leona takes a fork and reaches for the meal, but her elbow knocks over her glass of water, spilling it over on her, "Oooh!" She waves her arms around frustrated, "You've gotten me all wet Sheryl..."

So you assume they say.

You hop down from the tree and brush off leaves as you make way back to the meeting spot, swiftly and quietly, just in time to dodge back into the bushes as Rein and Yu'yen exit, walking further into The Calico District.

Leona and Sheryl meet with you moments after, and you point them in the direction the two went, deciding to get caught up on the way.

"They didn't really say anything, mostly just sat around and ate." Leona tells you, "I guess they had fun but it didn't look romantic at all."

"Not compared to your dinner huh." You say to her, she just gives you a confused look as she wrings some water out of the bottom of her shirt.

Rein and Yu'yen stop in front of the rising fountains in the Calico District, you recognize it being just between the boy's school and Renfel's Spices where you picked up fireseed. The two stand there watching it, but neither of them make a sound.

"Ooooh, what a romantic sight. I bet it looks even better at night." Leona whispers.

"I'm not sure they agree." Sheryl points forward, where you see Rein and Yu'yen playing rock, paper, scissors.

"Pay attention." Sheryl says back to her, her tone just a little annoyed.

"Then in that case, I wish... for a beautiful woman!" Yu'yen tosses a coin into the fountain as well, not being the least bit shy about his wish. Rein punches him in the shoulder.

"Ooooh? And what do you call me?" Her eyebrows furl up but there's a small smile on her face.

"Belgran women are never beautiful." Yu'yan crosses his arms and nods to Rein. She responds by slapping him across the head.

"What'd he say!?" Leona pulls up her sleeves and starts to stand up, Sheryl stops her from revealing your group.

"Just calm down, she's not angry."

It doesn't look like things turned out as romantically as anyone had thought, but it doesn't seem to have exploded either. Yu'yen runs towards the fountain away from Rein, and cups water in his hand, splashing it at her. She angrily kicks at him in turn, but the two of them just look like a couple friends at play.

You nod to yourself and turn to leave them alone... but something catches your eye, delaying your exit.

"Peh. We finally find you and you're getting your arms up in another women haaaah?" The man shouts to Yu'yen as he comes towards the fountain.

"Cre'mahn?" Yu'yens eyes widen at the appearance of the strangers. He steps between them and Rein.

"Took us long enough to find you. Heard around Ridhome that some foppish Lunese kid was hanging around Deneb." Cre'mahn cracks his knuckles. The thugs beside him draw their swords.

"Couldn't have waited for my date to end could you." Yu'yen clenches fists, unarmed.

"Don't worry, it's over already. Send the lady home, I prefer not to get violent in front of women." The thug rushes at Yu'yen, drawing his sword. Yu'yen pushes Rein away and twists his body, narrowly avoiding the swing that cuts into the cloth of his shirt.

"Yu'mao wants you back home, it's time to stop playing mouse Yu'yen." The three thugs circle around your friend.

You draw your blade as the scene unfolds.

You step out of the bushes and make quiet strides forward, coming in swiftly behind the thug standing furthest back, you slash at his ankles and he topples down. Sheryl follows your lead nearly synchronized and does the same to another.

The de-facto leader Cre'mahn turns around, and thinking quickly you bring your fingers up and snap them, flashing light into his eyes. As they fade, with his vision blinded you run at him with your sword in hand and swing... only to be married with a skilled motion of his blade.

"It failed?" Sheryl says in surprise.

"Oh no! You caught me well surprised, but where I come from..." Cre'mahn presses you off of him and sends a kick coming high at your head, you narrowly avoid it, seeing the bottom of his boots sweep by your vision, "You learn to fight dirty, and you learn to beat dirty fighting."

Yu'yen lunges at Cre'mahn from behind, but the man proves to be worth more than both of his companions put together. He lifts a fist up and catches Yu'yen in the gut with it, flipping him over onto the ground beside you. Leona runs towards Yu'yan from the bushes.

"What a spell that was..." Cre'mahn spits on the ground, "I'm going to need glasses."

...did we see where Rein went after Yu'yen got her clear of the fighting? I'm kind of hoping she's going to be sneaking around to one of the downed thugs and liberating a sword from them while the big guy's attention is elsewhere.

I can't imagine a guy his size would be using a thin blade if it was going to break after a few impacts.

You point your sword at Cre'mahn, and he gestures for you to come at him. Dashing forward, you swing your blade straight at him in an effective but clear way. He takes your bait and brings his blade up side-ways to catch your blow.

Steel to steel, the weapons connect. You can tell your opponent is a fair deal stronger than you, and with a moments mistake he could easily slide his blade down from yours and cut into your flesh... but you don't intend on making a mistake.

You twist your blade forwards as he presses his forward, and the edges of the swords catch against each other head-on. Lunese weapons are well known for their speed and beauty, but not their strength. Mustering all the strength you can, you shove into your sword hard, and your efforts press your weapon straight through his, splitting his blade into two pieces. You carry your blow through, cutting into his chest as you push him back.

The man, he looks down to the sizeable wound you inflicted on him and then to his shatter sword. He growls at you, "Damn Raschan dogs."

You look back to your companions, Sheryl and Leona respectively keep both of the Cre'mahn's men down, their weapons drawn and ready.

You turn back to Cre'mahn and ready yourself to finish off your opponent... but the insidious bastard disagrees with your intentions.

He tucks his large body and rolls over some paces, to where Rein is still getting up, dazed from being pushed and confused by the sudden events.

"You'll stay right where you are!" Cre'mahn grabs Rein by the hair and changes the momentum of the conflict in an instant, though his sword is shattered in half, he still makes dangerous use of what remains of the blade. The edge now extends no longer than five inches, but each one of them now rests just beside Rein's neck.

Yu'yen pulls himself over beside you, clutching at his gut where he was struck. He makes half a step forward, but Cre'mahn twists his blade, bringing it just slightly closer to Rein's neck, stopping Yu'yen in his tracks.

"Where I come from; you learn to beat dirty fighting, and you learn to fight dirty." Cre'mahn snarls at your group, "Let my friends go and hit the floors, or we'll be turning the lady's neck inside out."

Leona steps off of the man she has down and lowers her weapon, you can see her shivers as she watches her hostaged sister. Sheryl hesitates to pull her blade away from the man, not quite ready to follow through.

"Don't listen to him." Yu'yen whispers to you, "I know that pig, and he has no intention of letting her go. We'll need to get her away ourselves."

You don't look Yu'yen's way, afraid of giving away his intentions. Instead you...

Try and get him maneuvered so his back's to the fountain.

He'll probably be inclined to back up reflexively to get some distance, and if he ends up unexpectedly starting to go backwards over the side, he'll likely let Rein go (at least long enough for her to escape if we can signal her to what we're trying to do) when he reflexively attempts to steady himself and/or grab on to something solid so he doesn't fall.

"Cre'mahn, right?" You lower your weapon, but don't quite drop it. He tugs harder on Rein's hair, but she'll just need to bare with it for you to save her, "Yu'yen here tells me that we can't trust you. I think it's pretty clear that if you lose your hostage, there's no way you're getting out of this alive." You feel sick for playing along with the idea of Rein being a bargaining tool, but you have to do it, "Let's work this out... let's rotate so that you'll back up to the fountain."

Rein looks over to you with wet eyes, you stare back at her difficultly.

"The fountain? Trying to make it harder for me to escape haaah?" Cre'mahn doesn't say it, but he responds to your suggestion by moving like you said, you and Yu'yen make small steps to match.

"Alright, now let Rein go and we'll let you leave with your companions." You tell Cre'mahn, leading with an unreasonable idea so that your follow up can sound better.

"Hmph, if you were serious about that then you would've cut to it. No go, send my companions over here first and we'll talk."

"Alright... Sheryl, let them go." You look to Sheryl who looks back at you with shock, she shakes her head but Yu'yan and Leona both nod to her, and slowly she relents. Taking her sword away from the fallen man's neck, and taking a step back while he and his other companion make a clumsy scurry towards Cre'mahn, still bleeding from the legs.

"Now let Rein go." You say.

"Hm... nooooo." Cre'mahn flashes to you a disgusting smile.

You didn't expect him to follow through in the first place. But your plan is in place, "Fine... Yu'yen, go over there."

"What?" He turns to you surprised.

"They want you, not Rein... so we'll make a trade." You shift your gaze to him, and look him in the eye. Yu'yen's surprise gives away to a sly expression, it seems he's caught on. He holds his hands up and walks over to where Cre'mahn and his men are.

"Haaaaaaah! Raschan dogs are so stupid, giving us two hostages instead of one!?" Cre'mahn begins to laugh at your seemingly foolish ploy, one of his men grabbing Yu'yen's arms and pushes him down without struggle.

You've only got one shot at this. Hopefully Yu'yen understands well what's going on, because he'll need to act in just a moment, "Let her go you bastard! We agreed!" You yell to Cre'mahn, pointing your blade at him.

"Drop your sword and put those hands up fool, I never deal with Raschans!" He snarls back at you. You furl your brows and lift your arms, letting your sword drop. With your hand now free... you snap your fingers.

Gambling on the instant, you flash light once again. You're not likely to catch Cre'mahn blind this time, but the second is enough. Yu'yan acts kicks into the already injured ankles of the thug holding him, knocking the man jaw-first into the stone fountain. Though neither the strongest nor the smartest in class, you know well that Yu'yan's speed is second to none. He rushes at Cre'mahn.

The distance closed already by your elaborate act, Yu'yan grabs Cre'mahn's wrist in the second that his eyes are closed to avoid your weave and pulls the blade away from Rein. In the instant the light fades, the four of your classmates stand to your side. The group of three thugs standing opposite at you, two of them unarmed, and the last one clutching at the pains in his loins.

You lean down and pick up your sword, pointing it at Cre'mahn, "You surrender?"

It's not half an hour until you have the group bound by rope, courtesy of the shops nearby.

Calico is about as far away from The Archives as it gets here, but you're certain it won't be long before The Seekers arrive now with their eyes and ears everywhere. You can leave the mysteries to the professionals, but right now you want to see how Rein is holding up.

Sitting on a bench with Leona at her side, Rein is held by her sister tightly. Her clothes and hair are both a bit dishevelled by the mess, but it looks like Leona is more overwhelmed with emotions than Rein is.

"I was so worried..." Leona cries onto Rein's shoulder, Rein holds onto her glasses and whispers softly to calm her down.

"Are you doing alright?" You look to Rein, and she gives you a strained smile.

"Well, I'm not doing as badly as I was right before the date so I can't complain." She laughs to herself.

"It's fine if you complain," You look for your words, "Sorry about... well, this. I should've found a safer way to negociate." You don't quite find them.

"It's okay," Rein lowers her head, but her eyes stay peeking up at you, "I trust you."

You're at a lost with a response.

"Just don't do that again." She sneaks in. Her body is still shaking a little, there's no way she wasn't scared through it but still, Rein's holding up surprisingly well.

"I'm so happy you're okay Rein." Leona hugs her sister closer, you simply nod at Rein, not wanting to interrupt.

Masoch and Kran arrive at the scene shortly after you confirm Rein's safety. The thugs try to resist their orders at first, but bound in rope and facing the Kran's demon Graps, they give in without any more resistance than some dirty words.

"Sorry, we got here as soon as we could. We'll look into these men and get back to you when we can." Kran offers her apologies to your group before leading the men away. Masoch simply gives you all a nod and passes Leona a handkerchief to dry her tears.

You wait a moment for the sisters to gather their emotions before the five of you begin making your way out of The Calico District, the way there is quiet, no one quite sure what to say. The silence is broken when you arrive at the square.

"Hey." Yu'yen says, "You guys head back first. There's something I need to do." He doesn't offer any more information than that, turning and making way towards the back-streets with a certain ferocity in his eyes.

"I'll see what's going on." You tell the girls as you head off after Yu'yen. The sky has gotten dark and it's a difficult to catch up with him at his paces, you call out his name a few times but if he hears you he doesn't respond. You're led back to where he took you some weeks ago, later than the first time, the drunks of the street are at full-throttle, some drinking merrily and others looking to forget that they're drinking. A few unsavoury women of the night call out to you, but you ignore them as you pursue your friend into the little unmarked bar tucked in the corner of Ragamuffin Way.

As you push through the door just behind Yu'yen, you catch him shouting angrily, "WHO TOLD THEM I WAS HERE!?"

Yu'yen's eyes are on fire, a few of the men sitting at the tables put aside what they're doing, putting hands on their weapons as they stand up.

"Calm down boys, he's looking for me." A Lunese women stands up from the bar counter and makes seductive strides towards Yu'yen, her long dress carries an sign marked with her ethnicity. Her long black hair trails loosely behind her, her bangs cut bluntly.

"Yu'minh..." Yu'yen growls quietly as the woman puts a hand on his chin.

"I saw you at the ball some weeks ago, don't tell me you didn't see me... or perhaps you decided to ignore me?" She grabs his ear and pulls on it sharply, her long nails leaving marks as they drag along the skin.

"You told Cre'mahn that I was here." Yu'yen glared at the woman but you saw strength leave his arms as his fist fell loose and open.

"He paid me a visit, and I told him about recent events. It's not as if I ran tattling on you."

"Then what're you doing in Deneb."

"Well I figured if he was going to pay you a visit I may as well have him take me up here." Yu'minh runs her finger-tip along Yu'yen's chest.

"...what about my father?"

"Yu'mao doesn't know that you ran off here yet... I'm set to meet him soon though, should I tell him you sent him regards?" She leaned in and breathed the words onto Yu'yen.

"You won't leave to tell him."

The woman let out a giggle, not the cute sort, a malevolent one. She grabbed Yu'yen's hands and brought them up to her neck, guiding his grip around it, "Then stop me. Choke my life out if you want... or if you don't..." She took her hands off of his and moved them lower, feeling around his waist and moving inward slowly, "I'm sure there're other ways, that you. Could. Keep. Me. Quiet."

"...get away from me whore." Yu'yan responded coldly, taking his hands off of her skin.

"Have it your way." The lady walks by Yu'yen, and passing by you, you smell her scent. Perfumes, liquor, blood.

It takes some time before your companion starts moving again, he turns around and goes for the exit, paying you no attention.

You follow behind him, closely this time, enough to make sure that he hears you.

You're not immediately sure what to say as you follow Yu'yen back towards the dorms. But still you match his paces. As the two of you arrive at the end of the path leading into The Archives and the start of the path leading into the dorms, Yu'yen stops. He clenches a hand into a fist, and smashes it up against the stone walls of The Seeker's building.

"Hey friend, could you listen to me talk for a bit?" He turned and faced you, all the energy he had built up vanished through his now bleeding fist. His eyes are ragged, worn.

You nod, and lead Yu'yen up to the nearest benches.

"Ah. Where to start..." Yu'yen shakes out his hand, blood dripping about freely, "I told you about the prince bit right?"

"House Yu huh."

"Yeah... I wasn't kidding, my family was nobility in the Lunese courts once. That was a long time ago. Long before I was born, long before my father was born." Yu'yen brushes back his hair with his good hand, but it flops down messily right away, "My family has never regained it's nobility, but it's managed to regain it's wealth... cowardice and shrewd dealings I said."

"Looks like your blood is dug right into Rascha's criminal underground."

"Yeah, and it's infectious..." Yu'yen smiles weakly at you, "For generations now, the former House Yu has been one of the larger slave trading rings in Rascha."

"My father Yu'mao inherited it from his father Yu'gao. And him from his father Yu'za, and so on, and so on. I was groomed to be the newest generation of slave masters."

"The woman back there was... Yu'minh?" You inquire about the lady, and hope it wasn't Yu'yen's sister.

"She's a cousin." Yu'yen says, "And I may have been... engaged to be wed to her."

You nod, not wanting to pry into it.

"Look, I'm not proud of my heritage. The Lunese people are supposed to be honourable and strong, it took me years to come to it but when I just realized one day what was going on... I, I don't know. I had to leave, I had to do something else." Yu'yen slumps back against the bench, his head hanging off the back.

"So you came to Deneb."

"Yeah..." He doesn't say anything more, just sitting beside you as the clouds crept under the moon, "Sorry. I just really had to get a load off of me... I'm going to bed first. Good night, friend."

You send Yu'yen off after hearing him out, your gut tells you that you'll be hearing more about this soon... but until he's ready, there're other things to do.

"I managed to sort things out, without mentioning the bet. Told her it was in the heat of the party under a few drinks, and anyways, me and her work best as friends." Yu'yen leans against the door, his arms crossed. He winces a little when he touches his bloody hand to himself.

"So you can make friends with Belgran now?"

"The men were never a problem! The women... friends, okay. Lovers, never." Yu'yen turns to enter the dorm, but he stops himself to say one last thing to you, "Ah. I did tell her something though..."

Knowing that Rein is coming was not enough to prepare you for her though, "Leona, I know today was emotional but you can't keep sleeping wi-" Rein looks at you surprised when she sees you, expecting Leona. You look at Rein surprised when you see her, wearing a dark nightgown. Her important bits are all covered by thicker cloth, but the area over her stomach and the cloth around the legs is cut thinner, and you can see her shape through it.

She opens her mouth ready to scream, and you lift your legs up ready to run... but the sound never comes. Instead she just shyly looks away, and backs up towards her bed. She picks up her blanket and drapes it over her front, taking a seat on the mattress and looking at you annoyed, "If you want me to know it's you, then knock louder!"

"Everyone is sleeping, and how can you tell it's me by knocking louder?" You step inside and close the door, standing up against it. A candle keeps the room dimly lit, and a sweet smell drifts off from it.

"Because you knock loudly, and Leona knocks softly!" Rein raises her voice, then puts a palm over her mouth covering it, "Anyways... if everyone is sleeping then why'd you visit me." She says more softly.

"It wasn't different from going out with friends."

"Like Leona?"

"Not like Leona... like with you." She grabs a pillow and tosses it at you, it hits you softly in the face, "We got you those clothes that one time, remember?"

It was awhile ago, but you vaguely recall the event, "So how do you feel about Yu'yen?"

"I don't think we can be more than friends." Rein answers, "Plus anyways, he said..." He trails off. What in the world did Yu'yen say that they're hiding from you.

"What did he say?" You came here for an answer, and you want it.

"Reeeeally?" Rein underneath her sheets, Rein pulls her knees in closer, she pokes her face out from them and gives you a teasing smile.

"You can cook, and clean, but you're handy in the fields and you've got strength of character," You explain to her, as a voice screams at you to leave quickly, "You're a very charming woman... don't sell yourself short, somebody will notice that someday."

"Somebody huh." Rein keeps her smile, but it doesn't look quite as playful as it did a moment ago, "You should tell Leona all about her good traits sometime too."

"Sometime." You open the door, hiding your desperation to leave, "Good night." You close the door behind you slowly.

"Good night." Her voice barely catches your ear, as the door closes firmly shut.

You make way back to your room, where this sick feeling came from you're not sure of, but when you enter your room, you can't work up the strength to find out, you hit your bed and close your eyes.

It seems the date between Rein and Yu'yen ended as well as you could hope it would, though he seems to have made you a scapegoat. You think back to your date with Carna, those many years ago. You regret failing to come to a conclusion right then, about the relationship between you and her.

And so life goes on.

This quest is great. Too bad I'm generally asleep when it runs.
