You are a daemon and quite a powerful one if you do say so yourself. Well... Actually you were a demon, but a human who decided he wanted to carve out his own empire on the continent decided to summon you in a rather complicated ritual and seal you into a weapon. His own weapon no less. His name was Avitus,

At first you were pissed, since you know, sealing you in a weapon is totally not cool. But then you realised, as he cut down yet another mook, that this deal ain't have bad, I mean sure you're stuck forever in the form of a sword, but you got to eat the souls of anyone he killed, and oh how did he love to slaughter, in exchange for simply improving your form and granting him enough power to kill his enemies. Life was kinda good in the hands of Avitus.

Then came the end to the conquest. Avitus finally conquered the continent and returned to his capital to live out his days in peace. You think he'd give his heirs the sword to continue on the conquest for the entire world? Oh no he fucking didn't! Avitus was kind of paranoid you see, he thought that I'd take the first chance to escape and ruin everything he'd build, not putting any faith in his sons ability to control me. So the fucker buried himself with you.

A long time passed, don't ask how long because however long it was it was still an outright eternity of absolute boredom sitting on the corpse of the fucker who betrayed your trust. Then one day, you heard the sound of someone entering the tomb of Avitus the Conqueror at last...

You hear the stone mechanism of the puzzle lock on the door opening... You can't even begin to describe your anticipation. Something is finally happening after all this time! You hear the door mechanism clicking with a final sound. You can imagine it, the doors that stod closed for who knows how long finally laying bare.

There is a clatter of footsteps that seems to stop before the sarcophagus. Then you see the lid being carefully taken off as light streams into your world after hundreds of years of darkness. You would cry if it were physically possible.

As the lid is completely removed you see your saviours. A rather pale man in dark robes that are covered in charms and bones. His companions seem to consist of skeletons and walking cadavers. Their eyes, or eyes sockets, glow with an unnatural icy blue light. You think they are the souls of the already passed away mortals stuck into corpses to walk amongst the living again. Magic must have developed quite a bit after you were gone...

The fellow seems to look you once over and you are sure he sees your magnificent form of...

Your magnificent form of a sword! For some reason that doesn't sound as good as you thought before... Anyway he sticks his hand into the sarcophagus and peels Avitus' mummified fingers off your beautiful hilt and take you into his hand. How do you see this? Well you can see from every part of your surface! You can't see yourself without a reflection though.

He looks you over once again and seems to frown. He says something in a tongue you don't immediately recognize, but that is irrelevant because you translate to yourself only after a moment, "This is the great sword of Avitus the Conqueror? All I see is a rusted piece of scrap metal. The gems might be valuable though..."

...

You have to restrain yourself from lashing out at your only chance of getting out of this place. But the nerve this one has! You were made of the finest metal! You were decorated with ornaments made of pure platinum and the finest gems on the continent! At least that's what you looked like the last time you saw yourself.

You do know that your power has diminished drastically to maintain your concious. You feel that you are weaker than you were first sealed into the weapon. Nevertheless you will be restored once you can get to drink some of those wonderful souls! But first... You need to make sure this guy will take you in...

First order of business: introductions!

>He is described in the Lemegeton as a goodly warrior riding a black horse, and possesses the abilities of locating lost or hidden treasures, teaching trivium (grammar, logic and rhetoric) and making a man into a warrior of his own likeness. He holds the rank of marquis, and is served by 20 legions. Much the same description is found in the earlier text of Johann Weyer's catalog of demons, Pseudomonarchia Daemonum (published 1563). Earlier still is the Munich Handbook of Necromancy (Clm 849)[1] which lists an entity named Tuvries with much the same characteristics, except that he has 30 legions of servitors, and can cause a person to cross seas and rivers quickly.

Though you do not wish to scare this guy away, you can't just be insulted like that and take it! "You dare insult me mortal!? Armies have been felled by my blade! I have sundered giants!" You shout in his mind through the connection you establish by him holding you.

This serves to surprise the pale man and he responds confused in his mind, 'You can talk?".

You would rolls eyes if you had any. "Yes I can talk you meatbag. You have the honour of being speaking to the great Kimaris."

"Never heard him,' he says to your chagrin. Well you can't really be surprised, you have been stuck in this place for a long time.

"That is because anyone who has is dead! No matter, I have named myself so it is, from my understanding of human culture, only polite to name yourself, no?"

He looks at you with a thoughtful expression and then opens his mouth, "My name is Varyn... And I am, as you can see, a necromancer, a mage who uses Mana to bring the dead back to serve them, among other things..."

"Hmm... And why have you sought out this tomb... 'Varyn'?" you ask.

"You apparently. I have ambitions... And I need artefacts like you to accomplish them..." he trails off.

"Go on..."

"I seek immortality, though that is cliché and easily accomplished with enough skills in necromancy. My real ambition... It is revival. Necromancy denies death by forcing souls to remain in already dead bodies. I want to find a way of restoring a life completely."

Well that might clash with your goal of consuming souls...

>>
>>31734250
>>31734267
you are overthinking this. he's already shoving souls into corpses so he's neither overly virtuous or careful about maintaining friendly relations with things. he's determined on a goal that probably requires violating some more natural laws as well as chopping up a lot of dudes. he's not going to reject anything that will let him do that, and will probably be well under our control by the time he even gets that idea.

also it's likely to make him fight something and we want that ASAP.
>>
>Necromancy denies death by forcing souls to remain in already dead bodies.
I'm inclined to think of the undead as soulless beings: dead flesh and bone animated by a mysterious force. That makes them more frightening. They're just automatons with nothing inside. Most fiction has this view. I'm not sure abandoning it is a good idea.
In general I dislike attempts to explain magic or even to give names to the forces at work. Magic is fundamentally mysterious.
>>31734163

>>31734267

>Do we have such knowledge?
Probably not. But he doesn't know that.
>>
You could tell him that you eat human souls for Essence... But he didn't exactly ask... So you aren't going to tell him.

"Well... As you have said, you need magical artefacts. I am one such artefact. Though I do not look like much at this moment, simply let me drink the Prana of your enemies and I shall be restored..." What you said is true, though Prana will simply restore your reserves and repair any surface damage. Essence will allow you to grow in actual power.

Varyn looks at you with that thoughtful expression of his and says, "Very well, let us not stay in this dusty tomb any longer." He looks around for what you assume is something to sheath you in. When he doesn't find anything he simply takes a sword belt from one of his minions that's not really using it. Once he's safely straps you in you depart for the exit.

While you are walking through the halls of the tomb you see many battered remains of Varyn's minions from numerous traps and also a few of those fancy golems. Not as good with no Daemon in them but they did their job pretty well, until Varyn brought in his veritable small army.

You finally walk outside after centuries of staying in that tomb... The landscape is... different from what you remember... Interesting times are upon you once again...

Watch it's going to be something completely awful like a Fate Stay Night setting.
>>
>>31734407
It really helps make it clear why Necromancy is evil in the setting. If you're just making automatons from corpses then you're not really in moral quandary territory. Now if you're denying souls both their afterlife and their free will then suddenly you're in a lot more trouble morally speaking.
>>
>>31734543
Steampunk? There is already explicitly magic involved. Or it would be steamfantasy or something like that. Can't say I'd hate it, but it'd need to be grimdark to be interesting.

Well it won't be regular fantasy anyway, since that was apparently the case last time Kemaris checked, and it changed since then.

I hope it won't just be from one taste of fantasy to another, with full-speed medieval stasis in effect. But hey, I'd be fine with that.
>>

I think it's more of a "grab soul from whatever plane and trap it in a body" deal.

Where does it say that? The only thing stated was that things changed. Stop making assumptions based on assumptions.

It's been several days now since you've left Avitus' tomb. You still haven't killed anything...

Varyn, it seems, prefers walking to be his mode of travel. You don't understand why doesn't he use one of the undead horses some of his minions use, but hey that's his decision. Though it is grating that you haven't tasted blood yet. Watching the landscape change as you travel once again feels nice though.

You've been talking with Varyn along the way, asking him how has Avitus' empire fared and what has changed in Mediana general.

Apparently the empire fell into chaos once Avitus died, all of his sons vying for the throne. Eventually only eight remained (Avitus had a lot of children), out of those ten one abstained from all of this foolishness.

The seven potential heirs scoured the land in search of one thing that would allow them to gain legitimacy above the others, the emperors blade, you.

You cannot help but laugh at all of this. Serves that fucker right! His own paranoia brought down his dynasty without you having put so much as even an ounce of effort. You are sad that you missed out on all the fighting however. The story was not yet over...

The seven could not find the blade and gave up on finding it. However they found different goals. Each of them seeked out a Wyrm, the dragons that are were to have lived from the beginning of time. Each pleaded their respective Wyrm for power to best their peers. The Wyrms were amused by their actions and granted them powers beyond former understanding.

While previously magicians were people who simply imitated having great power through the use of spirits, the seven sons gained knowledge of how to use their personal Prana to accomplish feats of power beyond that.

Each son gained dominion over a particular plane: Water, Earth, Air, Fire, Light, Darkness and finally, Creation.

I don't know. I'm just an anon pointing out why this works as a setting element. Also it might not necessarily require the corresponding soul to raise the body.
>>31734842
Or it could be that the terrain shifted heavily from when the tomb was made. For example some mage accidentally turned the forest the tomb may or may not have been built in into a barren wasteland or vice versa.

Minor Nitpick: Sword sheaths have to be individually crafted to the sword to ensure a snug fit.
Assuming that the skelly's scabbard is not too small for our heroic girth and length, its likely too loose with much rattling and bumping.

Petty I know, but this is the sort of thing that a sword would complain about. We need to badger Varyn to comission a swanky scabbard for our infernal glory.

The sons had finally had the means to wage war upon each other, each using their new found knowledge to each others of their crafts. Thus came forth the first generation of Mages.

The war that followed was called 'The Clash of the Seven'. The war itself was horrible and lasted many years with various consequences to the continent. There was death and devastation everywhere. As the elemental clashed with their powerful disasters and Light and Darkness played their dance, Creation made horrible experiments on fellow humans. Thus came about the non-human races.

The eighth brother, the one who did not want the siblings to fight, saw what his family had truly brought to this world. Death and Destruction. He still did not involve himself, content with staying with his wife and child to a peaceful existence as a woodsman. Alas, fate had different plans for him.

The forest the eighth brother had built his home in became the sight of a battle between all seven armies. All apparently seeking him, so that they're ruler might gain better legitimacy with his support. The battle resulted in the death of his family...

Maddened by grief the last brother threw himself into study after he had surrendered himself into the hands of the brother who had the power of creation. He studied the way the seven used their Prana, and devised his own style.

He was the very first to wield the power of Death.

Thus came the end to the war at the hands of the eighth army. An army of the living dead coming to take revenge upon the living for waging such a foolish war. An army controlled by Endor, the Lich King and his 10 disciples.

Together they crushed the armies of the others with their growing power and killed the seven.

Thus how 'The Clash of the Seven' ended by the hands of the eighth.

Are we inscribed with runes of power (our name perhaps) on blade or hilt?
>>
>>31735350
We could have him raise some powerful undead, like an ancient Knight or something, and have it wield us. That way he doesn't have to get dangerously close to combat to have us gaining power, and with luck we can shenanigan our way to assuming direct control of the body, and warp it to our desire, thus regaining some sort of physical form.

"To this day the Lich King lives in the ancient capital of Rabah, now called 'The Necropolis' in the Shadow."

"The Shadow?"

"The result of the war, all the smoke from the destruction would have blacked out the sun for the continent for at least centuries, but he uses some Air Prana artefact to converge it into one area so the rest of the continent can survive."

"Hmm... An interesting tale indeed... But now that the empire is gone, what country are we in now?"

"We are located in the Kingdom of Breland in the northen part of the continent. It's a pretty peaceful place, though there are bandits running about... Speaking of which..." he trails off to gesture at a group of men in fur skins who jumped out of the brush and surrounded your party that consisted of Varyn and 6 of his remaining servants.

"Your money or your life you pasty fuck!"

"Perfect! Replacements!" Varyn says while cheerfuly clapping his hands together, "let me see how much truth were in those tales of your power Kimaris!" he says brandishing you with a small smile.

"Hahaha! Look at this git waving his rusty kitchen knife!" you are going to enjoy this...

What plan of attack do you suggest to Varyn?

>Charge in. Once you get to drink that essence heads will roll!
>Let them make the first move. You don't want to get your second wielder killed too fast.
>Send in the minions first. They could probably soften them up for you, though some might get killed and you wouldn't get your fill of souls...

>Failure

Varyn charges at the enemy at your behest. Unfortunately he fails to kill one and only injures him heavily when he dodges. The others are upon you by then.

Though Varyn's minions hold off the attacks from the back, he himself is hard pressed with half the gang trying to cut him open. To Varyn's credit, he mostly snakes his way out of their attacks while delivering a few of his own, but he is still accumulating wounds that are wearing him down and will become dangerous if not treated soon.

You need to kill one already. There are three targets of opportunity.

>A big bearded fellow with a battlaxe. He has a bit of a limp, if you can get his leg than he's yours.

Varyn lunges at your designated opponent with deadly precision, weaving around the others and ducking before the powerful swing of the mightily bearded man. As soon as he's in reach he goes for the man's throat. He is too slow to react and combined with his inconvenient limp his throat gets quickly pierced by you.

You feel yourself being cleansed by his lifeblood and repaired by the Prana you are sucking out of him. But what's most important is that you feel that indescribable taste of Essence as you force his soul to enter your body and add it his Essence to your own. You feel potential build up after such a long time, it is euphoric you must say.

I am surprised that there is three separate stats for mass, length and density, when density is basically a function of mass and length (more or less). When we upgrade one, we automatically affect at least one of the other two. Unless the sword gets ridiculously thick/thin.
Think about it: if we upgrade length, either the sword also get heavier, or it get less dense, or it gets ridiculously thin.

Your only limits are practicality and your wielder.
>>
>>31737868
Problem is, unless we can revert at will, we're going to suffer. Huge, ultra heavy swords are not the end-all, do-all.
Adding width as an upgrade won't solve the problem, because touching one will still touch the others. We're going to spend souls that are going to invalidate upgrade we already paid.
Mass and sharpness are pretty much the only physical upgrades we need. Maybe put some shape limitations to avoid stupid munchkining like monomolecular mile-long blade, and that's enough.
Beyond that, we should be able to morph pretty much at will, with time and maybe prana limitations.

>>
>>31738371
>>Block and counter attack him
>>
>>31738371
>Dodge at the last moment and go for a surprise attack on someone else

Pasty McMilkface is faster than this scrub.
>>
>>31738371
get out of the way, blocking two blades with a knife is hard unless Varyn has a shield or off-hand weapon
>>
>>31738371
>Get out of the way and attack one of the guys at the flanks

And captcha kept me from leaving my dice on.
>>

Why would you want to increase mass? To make us slower?

The blade is not yet good enough.

Get some weight behind those swings son.
>>
>>31738470
OP QTG is not important ignore at all cost and pray anons don't advertise your quest there
>>
>>31738450
>be a light fucking sword
>dude wants to slap a bitch with us
>she barely even recoils
>hurr durr mass is bad
Example: Guts from Berserk. The sword is so heavy he slashes through (several dudes in) plate armour.
>>
>>31738485
Hell no, don't ever advertise in QTG, that's a recipe for disaster.

You should make a twitter and announce threads there.
>>
>>31738450
Not becoming a piece of paper when we extend ourself.
>>31738485
I think to read the qm start guide.

too late
>>
>>31738485
No, unless you want a torrent of undesirables to flood your quest.

Sharpness + Length >>> Mass

Our current owner is a mage not the Hulk.
>>
>>31738530
yeah, because that's completely realistic

>playing as a magic sword

you people

It's greatly overblown but shows mass ain't a thing to fuck with.
>>31738657
We ain't a HF blade. Enjoy being useless against armour and anything that's shielded from sharpness.
>See that dragon?
>You can't slay it because your sword is an overly sharp and light piece of shit.
>>
>>31739056
>we ain't a HF blade

Why not?
>>
Varyn charges at the one on the left flank before mister twin dagger can pounce him. And it seems that he is against the longsword wielding bandit. One day you'll be the best bloody sword in this fucking continent! Varyn strikes, but it isn't enough.

Apparently this particular bandit had some merit. Though Varyn did put a wicked wound on one of his hands, sadly it wasn't his sword arm so he stroke back. Varyn managed to dodge the hit put he had to put in some extra effort on his part. His wounds are wearing him down more and more...

>Sadly I have to end it here. Can't stay up anymore.
If I have time I'll run tomorrow. Though first I have to read Remarck's All quiet on the Western Front in one day and also prepare for an important maths test and a presentation on the Cuban Crisis.

Comments and constructive criticism would be appreciated.

Good night.
>>
>>31739056
>can't slay a dragon because blade is too sharp and light
as long as it's sharp it can cut, and therefore kill

also
>Enjoy being useless against armour and anything that's shielded from sharpness.

>implying shields against sharpness exist
>implying their shields could hold against our might.
>>
Also, someone please archive the thread. Thanks.

Ignore trolls. Learn to quickly proof-read. Practice writing often, if not nightly.

Lurk more. Honestly. Find popular quest threads and digest them.

What, are we aiming to become the Angel Wing Razor?

They should read good quests, not popular ones.

I don't know what that is
but sure

Artifact level sword in D&D 3.5. It was so sharp it outright ignored all item hardness, creature damage resistance, and was capable of cutting through effects of pure force.
>>
>>31739242
fuck yea sounds legit
what book was that one in
>>
>>31739118
now that you have the rough shape of things plotwise, consider what gaps need to be plugged in the worldbuilding. Anons will tug at strings, especialy on the weapons/military side of things.
