Victory has always been yours. Fear is an afterthought you often forget.

You are the only three-time champion of the Imperial Remote Operations tournament.

Drenched in sweat, you enter the deisgnated building: an old, run-down school. Right as you enter, a woman behind a large wooden desk greets you. Her dark blue uniform, sharp facial features and emerald eyes behind small glasses make her seem stern, but you can already tell it's a lie.

"Welcome to the New Babylon IRO tournament registration facility number 153," she says. How can I help you?"
"I'd like to participate in the preliminaries."
"Name?"
"Darius Duravi."
"Software version?"
"1.3.789.37.77."
"Gender?" A smile plays on her lips.
"Fuck you. Male."

The woman fills in the blanks with a fountain pen - a staple of the Imperial bureaucracy since centuries ago - and does something with her cell phone. She extends you a brochure.

"Would you like to review the basics while you wait for our personnel?"

>[] "Sure." Gotta gather intel whenever possible; they might've added something new.

"Sure," you say. You thumb through it.

"Welcome to the Imperial Remote Operations tournament! We are glad to see you eager to serve the Empire! The IRO tourney environment is an excellent place to showcase the military might of our glorious Fatherland, allowing you to see what goes on in the borderlands on daily basis. Before proceeding, please make sure your software is up to date..."

You immediately regret accepting the "informative" piece of literature. Saturated with propaganda, it outlines the basics of what you're about to be doing, to wit:
-Laying down in a bed and connecting to the plug.
-Selecting a loadout for each of your 6 pieces of infantry and a vehicle.
-Killing the cowadooty kiddies dead.

More interestingly, the prelims are open to the general populace, requiring nothing more than a plug and a fairly old version of software. The place would've been filled to bursting a mere 20 minutes ago, but this shit is about to start in 5-8 minutes, at the most. A bored-looking girl in a lab coat approaches you, shares a nod with the desk woman, and asks: "Are you ready?"

You slam the book closed with a satisfying thud and throw it on the desk in disgust.

You know why you're here. It's time to make some cash.

She leads you to the gym, which is lined with countless beds, an IV drip next to each occupied one. A few thick wires come up to every bed, as well, and a little disk, almost like a button, lies on every fluffed pillow. You approach one of the free beds, take off your loose undershirt, and lie down, reaching for the perfectly flat disk and popping it into the indentation at the upper end of your neck.

"I assume you can do without the tutorial, Mr. Punctuality," the girl says.
"Not like there's time for it."

Now, your loadouts. This year is pretty important, because the Imperials reset everything so as to give newbies a chance. That's part of why you're here: so they don't. You need your pastures green and liberated from the cattle which might graze on it.

Two minutes and 13 secons on the clock/ You don't bother to make any changes, but give the armaments a once-over.

Marcus - Assault
Aurelius - Assault
Gaius - Support
Octavius - Support
Julius - Engineer
Augustus - Recon

Your two Assaults are armed with standard-issue assault rifles, the Supports have a light machine gun each, the Engineer gets a submachine gun and your Recon has a single-shot sniper rifle. Bog standard. In addition to the issued firearms, each gets 3 grenades. Here's where the class distinction starts to kick in:

Assaults also get two "flashbangs" each. Akin to chaff grenades, these scramble visual and aural receptors to render combatants vulnerable for a varying amount of time.
Recons completely shut down for two minutes, unable to move or even communicate. Dead with a timer.
Engies take it better, but not by much. Immobile, deaf and blind for 30 seconds, but they still ping on radar.
Assaults get bamboozled for 12 seconds. Mobile, but not much else. Spray and pray is sometimes useful here.
Supports shrug it off, their visual and aural gets "runny" for about 4 seconds and not much else. If you're not a first timer, it's not even enough to drop your performance.

Supports pack C4. Four blocks each, hefty and powerful. Also two claymore-likes. C4 is C4, but the claymores have a neat feature: when they're tripped, they send out a small EMP, so infantry pieces drop from radar before they're killed.

Engineers have rocket launchers as "back-up" weapons. They tend to pack a lot of ammo in "quivers," but given that these are prelims, you have to do with just 10 missiles. High velocity, structure-unfriendly.

Lastly, Recons. They usually get better rifles than single-shots, but this'll have to do. They paint targets, move more quickly, have better camo indices, and have very high-performance visual and aural data acquisition.

You close your eyes. That's a pretty important step - you remember one time when you didn't, and when you disconnected, you couldn't see anything for a goddamn week. Not like the medical staff could have, you know, closed your goddamn eyelids or something. Fuck them.

The world suddenly goes pitch black as far as the eye can see. A deafening silence drops on you. You resist the urge to scream out just to make sure the world hasn't been drained of sound. Most people do, but it's a physiological reaction rather than an expression of fear. Like vertigo.

You slowly begin to acquire visual and aural data. Then, sensory data. Little by little, it trickles in. And in. And further and further in.

This is the second point at which people start to scream. 6 individuals and a vehicle's sensors. A seventh of the data from all of these is already enough to make a normal person feel slightly uncomfortable. Half is enough to render all of their pieces immobile and plunge the operator into a short-term coma. You don't feel like recalling the full list of things that happen when an individual receives one hundred percent.

It feels like the information goes deeper, but that's an illusion facilitated by the fact that you get it from different sources, and thus have to de-thread it before processing it in the neo-mammalian brain. But forget that mumbo-jumbo, no sane person cares.

At this point, all 6 pieces have fully activated and you open their eyes, one by one.

A desert on one side, a dusty city on the other. You're some 500 meters away. Two other spawn points can be seen, and including yours, they creat an arc on the abandoned city's periphery. They see you as soon as you do them and put up their guns.

All they'll hear is clicks, though. They can't move, either. All they have is their land vehicle in the center, should they have chosen it, and their 6 pieces of infantry arranged in a circle, each facing outside.
>>
>>31751477
Only one of your neighbors has a Goodfella in the center. Which means...

Your ornithopter stirs to life in the middle of a small plaza. As a VTOL, that's all it needs. Too bad you can't see enemy positions. The radar ping tells you it's close to the city's edge, though.

A sandstorm picks up. The match is about to start. Before the sands obscure your vision entirely, you see that enemy pieces put down their firearms. A rational move. A flash of red is all the warning you get before the sky explodes in smoke and the ground around you in sand.

>[]Attack the kid without the Goodfella. He's new and lacks cover.
>[]Attack the kid with the Goodfella. He's new and won't be expecting you to tackle him right away.
>[] Dash to the city. Cover, support, tactics. You'll be able to use all of these there.

You get that familiar feeling again. Like butterflies in the stomach of a giddy schoolgirl. Forget about victory. You came here to MURDER and GET PAID.

Augustus extends his shoe platforms and dashes directly forward, Marcus and Aurelius arc away from the city and towards the spawn point. Augustus jumps, soars some 50 meters into the air and Octavius immediately opens fire on the spawn point.

The Recon enters visual range only to find two supports a little distance away, lagging behind the rest of the retreating squad heading for the city.

One shot. Two shots.

Marcus and Aurelius quickly pass Augustus by and unload their rounds. Two mags empty as casing fly in the air. One round hits an assault in the head. Another 20-something hit the other in the torso.

At this point, your second support and Engineer have made it to the city, since their use on the outskirts was insignificant.

The ornithopter finally takes off, the smoke directly above it has dispersed enough. Two enemy soldiers enter the plaza right as it lifts off the ground and get chewed up by machine gun fire.

One squad is kill. Here's where it gets hard.

>[] Guerilla warfare. Scout with Gaius and Julies, Support and Engie.

Gaius (S) and Julius (E) move forward, sweeping a few streets with suppressive fire and catching two enemy pieces in the process.

Augustus (R) reaches the city first and leaps on top of a building. A few more leaps and he settles down, takes out his rifle again and affixes the bipod.

Marcus (A), Aurelius (A) and Octavius (S) are still lagging behind. Gaius (S) and Julius (E) start taking RPG fire and hole up in a building.

Augustus can see the two pieces that fired on Gaius and Julius.

>[] Open fire. The second won't have time to duck and cover before you get him, too.

You keep your finger on the trigger, but look elsewhere, searching for the enemy Recon in hiding. He's gotta be around here. Waiting for you to reveal yourself.

Gaius and Julius keep taking RPG fire. Another two rockets hit the building they're in and break two walls, bringing the second story down. As the Support and Engineer were in the back, near the staircase, they now have a barricade in front of them. Their only escape now is through the window.

The two pieces make haste. Augustus still hasn't finished scoping out the nearby roofs, but there is a worrying number of enemy Ornithopters in the air. Marcus, Aurelius and Octavius are caught up, a few meters away from the other two direct-fire pieces.

>[] Raise the Ornithoper. You can take down at least two enemy VTOLs safely, which are the only ones in weapon range, and proceed to provide CAS.

ENGAGING HOSTILES.

Up the aircraft goes. Two enemy machines sight it but don't manage to open fire quickly enough. Rounds begin flying everywhere, and a few ricochet off the front-facing window. You almost wince. The exchange continues.

One ornithopter gets a lead stream right in the kisser and explodes, knocking the other off to the side. A chance! You fire all four barrels, intending to hit it before a stray round hits the wings.

Your Ornithopter, Caesar, saves the day. The enemy has blown a wing off, but flight performance doesn't even stutter.
>>
>>31752552
Gaius (S) and Julius (E) begin to circle around the now-crashed building, approaching the enemy Engies. The two assaults and support come in from the other side.

WARNING WARNING WARNING

An alarm blares right into your head and you swerve Caesar out of the warpath of a missile as it just barely skims the surface of the ornithopter's hull.

An explosion follows. The other missile hit.

Too little, too late for your CAS, but your squad remains intact. The entirety of your squad lay down fire and drop one of the two Engineers. The other escapes into an alley.

Augustus meanwhile jumps off his roof, climbs into the window of another structure, and situates himself on another roof. From there, you clearly see that the place of retreat is two-story house filled with enemy soldiers. Two squads, maybe three. About 10 pieces in all.

>[] Storm the building. They haven't seen you yet, and inter-squad comms are off, but they'll get the sign language quickly enough. Blitz is the only way.
>[] Blow the building up. A few C4 charges will leave no chances for the survivors. You don't need to lose pieces.

Marcus and Aurelius toss a flashbang each, one for each floor.

BANG!

One piece manages to jump out the window in time.

Gaius and Octavius roll in at max speed. An Engineer. He points his SMG at Gaius but Augustus reacts and a shot through the head halts the attack. A click and a clack and barely 20 seconds later, the charges are planted successfully. One for each wall, they emit satisfying beeps. You pull the trigger and smile.
>>
>>31752876
An explosion roars. The structure blows up sky high, not a single survivor remains beneath the rubble.

You yourself have put down the equivalent of 3 squads, and you weren't too lucky. It is now likely to be the endgame. Only 20% of those that started out remain, and you have to decide on your strategy.

>[] Take position in surrounding buildings. The hunters should be out in full force by now. With the slightest bit of luck, they'll engage each other.

You sprint to the heart of the sprawling mess of wrecked architecture. All 6 of you.

The Recon and Assaults reach it first, taking cover behind a low wall in an alley branching out from the central plaza. You see nothing of note.

In a flash, all three are headed for different two-storied structures, rushing up to the second floor to check for anything of worth. Dead bodies are, unfortunately, all you find. You search building after building, and despite all your efforts, turn up nothing.

The rest of the squad comes up to the plaza. Shots and explosions ring out. Far off.

Augustus leaps and scopes out the nearby area. It doesn't take long. Pillars of smoke dot the city.

Two pillars of smoke approximately 250 meters away, grenades still flying everywhere.

Another two a little further away, 300 meters or so. Heavy machineguns fire on helpless targets and one building falls after another.

FWIP!

Augustus drops. The rest of your squads scurries into the buildings next to the Recon's fresh corpse. Marcus (A), Gaius (S) and Julius (E) in one and Aurelius (A) along with Octavius (S) in the other.
>>
>>31753237
Soon enough, an enemy squad rolls in. Four Recons. They pass through an alleyway and into the plaza, crouching next to the walls.

They tote their characteristic rifles and bristle with grenades. 5 on one, 6 on another. The other have the 3 they started out with.

All hands are on the motherfucking deck and ready to go. Marcus and Aurelius tighten their grip and shift their weight slightly, locked on to the grenades two of the Recons carry with their assault rifles. Gaius and Octavius raise their LMGs up to shoulder level and dutifully brace them, taking proper firing stance. Julius readies his rocket launcher.

Two Recons raise their high-accuracy rifles, two more take out two grenades each.

They know they can't win. But they might not have to lose.
>>
>>31753337
Pretty sure it's 27.1%. Easiest way to construct the problem is 1-P(all three are between 2 and 19), which would be 1-(0.9^3). I suspect what you did was calculate P(at least one 20) + P(at least one 1) without accounting for the overlap (where there is both a 20 and a 1).

Granted, message stands: a lot of QMs who use best-of-3 fail to account for the hideously high crit rate and severe upshifting of values; I am pretty sure you'll get at least a 16 ~50% of the time, with the 95% between 8 and 9.

In a single moment, the plaza bursts into hellfire. A storm of gunfire breaks out and bullets scream death as they pass each other by. The final standoff is here.

A single bullet from Marcus' rifle flies true and worms its way into a grenade dangling off the torso of an enemy Recon, setting it off and detonating the rest. A missile sent from a nearby position, courtesy of Julius, strikes the ground between all four opponents, but not before two deft shots drop Gaius and Octavius. The Supports barely let off five rounds before ceasing to function.

An explosion envelops both of the grenade-enriched hostiles, the blast from one's supply of explosives serving as a primary explosive for the other's line of anti-personnel weapons. Dust, sand and pieces of rock fly up from the missile strike, obscuring the view.

A mere second later, a grenade clinks as it hits the ground at Aurelius' (A) feet and now-deceased Octavius' body. Another hits the floor beneath Marcus' (A) feet.

BA-
BANG!

Limbs everywhere. Battery fluid streaks across both rooms and metal shards howl and tear apart everything they encounter. Aurelius and Marcus forcefully deactivate in the blink of an eye.
>>
>>31753665
But, through some sort of statistical wonder, Julius (E) lives, by virtue of Marcus' body shielding the piece from excessive damage. One arm is unusable, but fuck that. You've got a piece left standing, and the match isn't over yet. Everything rides on how you proceed from here.

The debris settles and you see the Recon looking through his scope. At the wrong window. You open the hatch. Take out a missile. Load it in. Aim. Fire.

Nary a second passes. Nary a hope remains for the opponent. Only the whoosh of your projectile interrupts the silence.

The Recon notices. The Recon reacts. The Recon explodes.

And just like that-

You come to, slowly and unwillingly. The gym is empty, hollow. Only the lab coat-wearing girl from before is here, looming over you with a cold expression on her face.

"Still haven't recognized me?" She asks.

You rummage through your memories. She's a familiar face, with a familiar voice, but it doesn't ring any bells. Time to wing it.

I like the way you think. Alas.

"You look familiar. Who are you, again?"

This earns you a smack upside the head.

"I was your co-belligerent half a year ago, before the finals. How did you forget, you idiot?"
"Sorry," you say. "I've been a bit busy."
"Busy doing what?! Hitting the booze?"
"Well, yeah. Been preparing for the big day, today. Wanna get wasted with me?"
"I'll pass."
"Pfft. Suit yourself."

You get up, find your undershirt and put it back on. It's washed and freshly dried, slightly moist with water. At least, you doubt it's still sweaty, given the flowery scent it gives off. It's faint.

"Did you wash this for me?"
"Don't be ridiculous."
"But it smells-"
"It's in your head. You reek of sweat from where I'm standing, so I don't know what gave you the idea that I would ever touch your clothes. Least of all in that state."
"Fine, fine."

You jump off the bed with a spring in your step and stretch.

"It's too bad you didn't bother to participate in the prelims. Could've been fun. Then again, they don't have knives in the prelims, do they?"
"That's not why. I just don't bother to bully kids that can't even keep their firing stance straight. I'm guaranteed a place in the War Palace, as are you."
"I make a living with this, remember? No job, no welfare, no nothing. A guy's gotta eat! Speaking of which, where's my prize?"
"Here," she takes out an envelope. "25,000 ICUs."
"Great. Then I'll be off," you say, starting off towards the nearest door.
"Hey! Don't you remember my name, at least?"

Aw shit.

"Well, don't get rusty before the finals!"
"It's Ayumi, you asshole! Ayumi Goudou."

"Sorry! I'm bad with names."
As you head out the door, you rummage through your loose cargo shorts and find a slip of paper. It's the address of Ashley's new workplace - incidentally, a bar - where you promised to meet up with her today. Drinks on her, she said.

On the other hand, your "uncle" is waiting for at his car shop on a hill. The old man is grumpy and impulsive, but he gives good advice. And he's been telling you to come over for a man-to-man talk for fucking ever. Might as well oblige.

Of course, you just blew off Ayumi completely. Knowing her, she's still there, fuming, in her own, silent way. She's not the type to hold a grudge, you can tell that much. It'll ruin the dramatic effect if you return, though.

You head straight for the nearest hill. It is, quite possibly, the only hill in the entire district. Your uncle doesn't like to be kept waiting, and if you procrastinate any more, you may as well never come. Better do it now.

The trek through the picturesque South Akkadia district of NBC clears your head. You wind down a bit, a warm buzz filling your head after the satisfying brawl. With a content expression and through half-lidded eyes, you take in the beautiful streets. The downtown of New Babylon City just screams "everyone here is filthy fucking rich and doesn't know what to do with their money." Even the government. The government, for fuck's sake! The bureaucrats can't manage to tax this place to death, the corruption in the city can't possibly keep up with the always booming commerce. And it's not even the richest place in the Empire. Not even close.

Damn, you love living in the Empire.

Your uncle is a very emotional man.

As you open the door, you have all of 0.3 seconds to note the chunk of metal hurtling towards you at an alarming pace. You turn, swivel and duck, evading the wrench by a large margin. You hear your not-blood-related relative from a room up ahead:

"Go get it for me, ya bum."
"Didn't you just throw it out, uncle?"
"Did I stutter?"

With a grumble, you nonetheless go and get the instrument. As you get back, uncle Sam comes up to you.

"So what have you been doing, kid?"
"Making cash."
"Oh, is it harvest time already? I must've lost track of the seasons. How about you stop milking the welfare cow and get a real job?"
"I can't work, uncle. I'm studying at-"
"Studying? You call visiting once a fucking month studying?"
"I already aced all their tests and finished the biochem curriculum. What else do you want me to do?"
"I want you to go to class."
"But then everyone else I know will miss me. And besides, if it ain't broke, don't fix it, right? That's your policy."

Uncle Sam sighs and runs a hand down his face.

"You're killing me here, kid. Let's talk about 'everyone else,' huh?"
"Sure thing, boss."
"When are you gonna fuck that classmate of yours?"
"Which one?"
"Oh, did your harem grow while I wasn't looking?"
"Oh! Ohhh, her. She's class prez, uncle. Get it right. And anyway, what do you mean, when?! I've known her since middle school!"
"Exactly. And you're still not together. What are you, some sort of faggot?"
"No! No, uncle, but I can't just up and fuck her just like that!"
"You gotta be shitting me. I've seen the way she looks at you, kid, and I wager you could. In fact, why don't you go and try right now? Might as well."
Can we just- Can we stop talking about screwing the class president for a second? I'm not going to-"
"Alright, what about Marina? Your friend's sister. She's a real firebrand."

"I will as soon as you man up. You've got how many women circling around you? And how many have you fucked?"
"..."
"I can't fucking hear you!"
"None."
"Still don't hear it. 'None' what?"
"I haven't fucked a single woman, uncle. That's how many women I've fucked."
"I'm glad we're clear on that. Do you see the problem, here?"
"Yes, I see the proble-"
"No, you don't. That's the problem. The problem is that you know at least three women after your cock and you're a virgin. THIS is an issue."
"I'm just trying to make the right decision!"
"Let me look for a fuck to give, numbnuts! I don't care if you fuck them all in the same night. In fact, go and-"

Ashley. Ashley Hassan, daughter of Sam Hassan.

"Ashley's been gushing about you since I don't even know how long ago. When are you gonna stop making her wait? And didn't she invite you over today?"
"Yeah, but you-"
"And you blow her off for the sake of having a shitfling here with me. What was your reasoning, chucklefuck? 'He's gonna rip my balls off if I don't show up, so might as well?'"

Bam. Hit the nail right on the head.

"Alright, if you don't want to fuck them all, you don't have to. Nobody can force you to. You said you're making money, right?"
"That's right," you begin proudly. "I made 25 thou just today. I even got another match in a few days."
"Right, right. You're three times champ, right? With that gold bird and whatnot."
"Yep. 3 golden trophies, but I don't see how that mat-" Oh no.
"And how many women have you met during these 3 years? You know, preliminaries, municipals, regional, nationals? Didn't you brag a year ago how you were chosen for the big imperial championship? With all the winners from the last 10 years?"
"Yes..."
"What happened there, huh? I get it. Even across 3 different women, you didn't find one you fancy. It happens. But what about the dozens and dozens of them you've met over the years? With your funds, you could easily move to a different city, hook up, get a job. The government is pissing itself over how much it wants to stick you in some military position, isn't it? You've been telling me as much. Even showed me those letters - dozens of 'em."
"Look, uncle, I don't think you get it."
"Just give me a straight answer, already. You've got a shit ton of golden opportunities in one hand, an equivalent amount of tits and ass in the other, and you don't bother to capitalize on either? I'd say I get it if you were the chickenshit sort, but you're smart enough to ace a year's worth of classes in two months and ballsy enough to put yourself in six soldiers' worth of shoes and murder everyone."
>>
>>31755202
You sigh.

He continues.

"I just can't handle it - watching you settle for mediocrity. You need to grab the bull by the horns! You could be the living the dream life, right now! Why aren't you?"

You bite your lip. Might as well tell him.

"I've been biding my time. Lazing about all day, getting drunk now and then, easy and exciting ways to make cash - that's the life of dreams!"
"That's the life of fuckwits."
"Ugh. Well, I've wanted to change, too. In fact, my dream is-"

The battles are cool. Inventive, quick and the people who should know what they are doing are shown to actually do the thing well.

You could generally work a bit more on exposition though. So far, what I've managed to gather about the setting is:
>We're a tough, coolguy who doesn't give a shit, OR DO WE?
>We're in a dusty. deserty(?) place with a futuristic internet cafe, a bar and a hill upon which your inexplicably crass uncle's workshop stands
>We fought in a virtual city with a lot of buildings
>Sometimes people would go inside buildings, shoot at eachother from within or beside buildings and move on to other buildings
>You dropped a bunch of names of things and people, who we can only assume are things and people because you told us so

Just turn it into the harem quest you actually want to write And I want to read already.
>>
>>31756756
I'd rather he did not. Harem quests are always shit. I have not seen or heard of a good one yet.
>>
>>31756756
