It's late night as you and queen Amata venture into the grasslands of inner Tianna, heading for the domain of the god Yaraon, to whom you both owe a debt.

During the battle against the Wyldland of the Black Marsh, you promised him a sacrifice. Now, the two of you are bringing him ten heads of cattle, more than you originally promised.

Even though the sky is dark, it's a clear night, lit by stars and a half moon. Enough light to walk by. The scenery is filled with the sound of the wind, the rustling blades of grass, and the quiet moos of the docile cows following you, tied to the rope in Amata's hands. A quiet, pleasant walk.

After a bit of polite chatter where nothing of much importance is said, Amata falls silent, and stays like that along the way, leaving you immersed in those sounds.

>Who are we?
Maka, an exiled noble recently Exalted as a Zenith-caste Solar. She's in the western city of Tianna as a guest of queen Amata, an old friend. Abyssals are targeting the city for conquest, Lintha pirates have infiltrated it with spies and agents, and the Realm is probably planning to get rid of you.
...but, right now, things are starting to look up a bit. You now have friends, allies, support, (soon) a husband and a wife, a small fleet, and are planning and laying out a city, to be named pearl. And you are going to finance it in perfect western style: high seas piracy and treasure hunting.

>Solar? Zenith? I don't know Exalted...
This quest is as newbie-friendly as possible, and I want it to work as a newbie's intro to Exalted. If you have ANY question, ask in thread. For the setting, google "1d4chan exalted".

>Archive?
http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=zenith

>System?
Dicepool-like system. When performing an action, everyone rolls 1d10 when posting. the first X rolls are considered, where X is equal to attribute + ability. Yes, this means that the more people are posting, the stronger Maka is, up to a limit of her attribute + ability.

>XP?
Attributes cost [current score x5] xp. Abilities cost [current score x3] xp, except Zenith costing [(current score x3) -1]. Charms cost 10 xp, except for Zenith-based charms (related to charisma and physical/mental fortitude) which cost 8 xp. At the end of every "session" (thread) you will be presented with a list of possible acquisitions.

Also, given all the talk about UMI: After thinking about it for a long time, i have decided that, to avoid arguments without removing bits and pieces of the game, I will remove the concept of UMI, and change the charms and powers that previously caused UMI to instead work as special kinds of natural persuasion, more powerful but more narrow in scope (but still working with the same rules as natural social effects). I think it's a fantastic idea.

I'm of the opinion that UMIs - while cool and fodder for an interesting story - are nothing but trouble. We WILL argue about whether or not to get them. We WILL argue about whether or not to use them if we get them. And we WILL argue about whether or not using them was justified if we use them.

UMIs are controversial enough when there's just a single player controlling a single character. Controversial powers - powers that let you mind-control, directly enslave, or what have you - will be horrible quest-killing argument fodder in this particular format.

So, yeah, get rid of UMIs. They're interesting and thought-provoking in a normal game. But they're horrible and game-killing in a collaborative quest format.

I think you're making the right call.

We also REALLY need to begin planning for our upcoming campaign against the Lintha. This isn't a thing where we can just wing it because we don't have the resources to bounce back from a disaster.

Ah. Then yes, we could do that, but that's magitech, and requires periodic maintenance and motes of Essence to fuel it for a scene. With how essence-strapped this particular version of the system is, that's probably a bad idea.

You want to know how I want to handle the fight against the Lintha? I want our Water Court allies to PART THE FUCKING SEA the next time the Lintha are in our waters, and then have a goddamn land battle with them. If we remove one of their biggest advantages - a fuckhuge magical ship towed by an actual sea monster - that'll be a massive step in the right direction.

Thoughts?
>>
>>31752681
Our allies only control the sea in the immediate vicinity of Tianna, I doubt their infflunce stretches to the Lintha base
>>
>>31752681
I think only coastal waters are in their domain and the Lintha don't get that close to the coast because of Tianna's Essence Artillery
>>
Rolled 8

>>31752715
>>31752718
The Lintha base is the mobile ship that they use to attack ships in our waters. I'm saying that, the next time they get in Tianna's waters - regardless of whether they're in range of the city's artillery - we drop them to the ocean's fucking floor and fight them in a land battle.
>>
>>31752681
I love the idea, we're just gonna have to do some serious diplomacy (read: mindblowing sex) with Father Ocean because they wont come close to shore. But parting the sea is smalltime boring shit. Maelstroms are where it's at sucka.
>>
Rolled 2

>>31752718
Tianna's artillery would reach - at absolute maximum - one hex away from the city tile. The Lintha have been raiding coastal waters all over the rest of the island - which is all Water Court territory. The idea could work, it just requires laying the trap and waiting for them to make the first move, not knowing where they'll hit.

Unless we lay some good enough bait.
>>
>>31752732
They wont tow the actual base into range it's just the mobile strongpoint that they stage attacks from.

We might be able to piss them off so much they bring it anyway though by heavily ambushing and raiding lintha ships and depleting the attendant fleet that will be at the Atoll at any given point.
>>
Rolled 5

>>31752768
There is no base, it's just the one ship. A single Lintha ship is a giant magical dreadnaught towed by a sea monster. Their living island - that's the home of all the Lintha in the West - is probably halfway across the setting at the moment, and not involved with this.
>>
>>31752782
Ah I thought the talk was about the Atoll itself. Just one ship is far more manageable.

We can't assume there's only one ship though. Rajan got his shit wrecked by the one dreadnaught but there's absolutely no reason to assume that is the only lintha presence in the waters around Tianna. Far better to assume there's a small lintha flotilla. Maybe 2 or even 3 ships or a fleet of smaller support ships that offload loot from the dreadnaught itself.
>>
I doubt anyone is going to listen and everyone who does will tell me that I am wrong but I got an idea for dominating Wavecrest relatively bloodlessly.

One of the things that Wavecrest has been trying to do is trying to absorb Tianna into its government.
I suggest that we make a deal. In exchange for agreeing to join the Wavecrest Archipelago we will get proper representation in the Wavecrest Council.

We send an enlightened mini-solar who's loyal to us and been trained to be a mean politician to be Tianna's representative.
While he/she is doing their thing, we and our circle work in the background with making the volcano gods behave nicely, solving Wavecrests problems with the wyld, and making sure that policies favourable to us are implemented.
Such as making Valeriana the head of R&R for the entire Wavecrest Archipelago instead of just Tianna, appointing Mikahil as head of the western trade alliance and allowing people to worship pre-approved religions, where worship of the unconquered sun will be apart of the list.

As the finishing touch. We can tell the Volcano gods that we have forced into submission to go crazy and refuse to calm down until the feathered one is sacrificed. After the feathered one is gone, we can manipulate the council to appoint Amata or someone loyal to us as the new feathered one.

tl:dl How about we take control of the Wavecrest Archipelago through political means instead of through war and violence.
>>
>>31752757
>>31752782
>>31752827
I thought Rajan was attacked while looking for the island?
>>
>>31752835
Bloodless transitions of power would easily be the best for long term stability but to swing Wavecrest is a far longer term item on our list.

It's a Realm satrapy after all, their fleet is based there and unlike Tianna and maybe Coral we can assume that having solars begin wheeling and dealing on the archipelago will send up a gigantic red flag to the Realm. Maybe enough to warrant a serious response.
>>
Rolled 8

>>31752862
>I thought Rajan was attacked while looking for the island?
The only thing he ever found was the one ship, which alone sank his entire fleet.
>>
>>31752835
Decent in theory, but it seems to be assuming that Wavecrest isn't going to completely bone us once we're in.

Given that they're a Satrapy of the Realm, and our openly shiny Solar faggorty is very blatant, I think phoning up whatever wyld hunt they can muster is going to be their first order of business. *especially* when they find out there's a circle of Solars and Lunars running around.
>>
Rolled 10

>>31752835
Yeah, that's a terrible idea. The moment we supposedly give in and join Wavecrest, they will strip Tianna bare for the rest of the archipelago, because they're poor as fuck. If we give them even a trace of authority here, Tianna will be plunged into poverty too. If we do this diplomatically, we need to negotiate with other islands to secede from Wavecrest and join us, not the other way around.

So, yeah, you're right. I am telling you you're wrong as fuck.

"Say, Amata?" You ask her, along the way, breaking the silence.

"Uh?" She sounds like she was shaken off some train of thought. "Yes?"

"Well... I wanted to ask: when should we hold our marriage?"

"Well, Tia wants to be first, and I thought you had decided to hold it in your Manse as soon as it was finished."

"It was an idea." You admit. "But without using demons or other magical shortcuts for building it... It's going to take months."

"Are you in a hurry?" She jokes. Then, a touch more seriously: "...If you don't want to wait, you can have it in Tianna. As discreet as you want, or as outlandish I can make it. Without spending too much, of course... we ARE still in a crisis."

"If we get our hands on the Lintha's treasure, though..." You mumble.

"Don't think it will be easy, not even for a moment." She replies. "They're monsters. In every sense of the word."

You nod quietly. "...can't we ask the Water Court here to join us in the battle? They could be of great help... heck, the Lintha ships will literally sail ON them."

"The Lintha never come close to coast, and their domain is only the shores. Deeper sea belongs to different sea gods, under Ocean Father's protection."

"He surely has no fondness for the Lintha, though?" You wonder.

"The Lintha are clever. They never do nothing to displease the gods, and give handsome sacrifices wherever they sail. And on top of the carrot, they have the stick."

"The stick?" You wonder.

"Their demon-ships can pollute and destroy the sea if they wish, contaminating it by mingling it with the oceans of hell. They do this if the sea is hostile to them."

"...They literally replace it with a friendly sea." You're equal parts horrified and impressed.

After a few more minutes, you reach the vast, open plains that are home to Yaraon, the "old Creation" that isn't part of the realms your war managed to carve out of the Wyld.

There is no sharp, clear border, but you just realize. The land, the air, the world feels different. You almost feel it being older, or rather, you felt the new lands being "younger" in some way. You don't know if that's because, as an Exalted, you are better attuned to the flows of Essence, or for any other reason.

Amata puts the rope the cattle is tied to in your hands. "I'll admit I'm not good at dealing with gods, or rather, I don't really like it." She explains. "Besides, you're better than me at this. Why don't you do the prayer and sacrifice?"

"I can handle it." You reply, taking the rope and the large sacrificial knife she then passes you.

You pull the cows close to a large boulder in the middle of the flatland, untie the first, and nearly decapitate it with a neat slash. As the blood sprays on the rock, you call: "Yaraon, Plains-lord, king of green valleys under the blue sky, honest friend, proud ally, enemy of my enemies! In payment of our debt and in sign of great gratitude, accept our gift."

One by one, you pull all the cows to the stone one at a time, and slay them one by one, painting the grey stone red with blood as the corpses pile. That's a lot of meat, and money, that Tianna is investing, you reason.

The cows left for last don't seem nervous in the least. They're smart animals, and they should have figured out what was going to happen immediately, but It's not the first time you've heard of gods influencing their consecrated sacrifices like this. No one likes to see a mess in a temple or at a religious event. Much less a chase, with the high priest running after a fleeing goat or veal, cleaver in hand.

That wouldn't look dignified.

As the last cow falls lifeless on the grass, you notice Yaraon sitting on the blood-red boulder, a satisfied smile on his face as the wind picks up speed around you. "You brought more than you promised."

"Well, it's a gift for an ally and a friend." You say, with a slight bow. "Nice to meet you again, Yaraon. How are things going?"

He rolls his eyes. "...So I heard Dancing Smoke got her festival and even a temple in Tianna."

"My, are you envious?" Amata smiles.

"Am I not allowed to be?" he replies, harshly. "You showered that ill-tempered punk with all sorts of gifts."

Apparently, it's true... Amata is not good at dealing with gods.

"Without her help, we probably would not have been able to wipe away this much Wyld." You explain.

"So what? She did more than I did?"

You briefly considering ways to be diplomatic, but if you deny that then he's going to ask why the rewards are so different.

"...Honestly, Yaraon, yes, she did. She flooded a fourth of Tianna in lava." You point out to him, and he winces. "You have done less, and still received a large sacrifice in your name. Are you still unhappy?"

He shrugs. "I guess I should push my case more with the barbarian tribes of the north, since now, with the Wyld gone, they are using my lands as a hunting ground."

"Do you gods ever get tired of endlessly demanding stuff from people?" Amata cuts in.

...You need to find a way to defuse the situation.

"Alright, both of you." You sigh, putting a hand on Amata's shoulder. "Yaraon. Is this a way to welcome Exalted friends and allies bearing gifts?"

"N... no." He slides down the rock, the blood not clinging to him or even leaving stains or marks on his clothes. "...I'm sorry."

"And Amata. Amata?"

"...Alright. Sorry, Yaraon. I spoke too much."

"Good." You nod, putting a hand on his shoulder as well. "We're all on the same side here."

"...How are things going in your lands?" He then asks.

"We're planning the Manse around which we're going to build a new city."

"Are you having any problems due to the land not having any god overseeing it?" He wonders.

"No, not really, although it's probably because not much time has passed." You reply.

"...I have a small favor to ask you. Well, it's a favor, but it's something that will also come to your advantage, so think of it as mutual help." The god says.

"What do you need me to do?" You lift an eyebrow.

"Nothing! Just... You're a ruling Solar, so the celestial bureaucracy will probably contact you before assigning a god to rule your new lands. They don't normally do so with mortal rulers, but I expect you'll get a say in that."

"And what do you want me to say?" You think you can guess where this is going.

"That you would rather wait for my and Smoke's son to naturally develop in the domain." He asks. "So we're not going to have to deal with divine politics, and just keep this whole business between us."

That sounds suspiciously close to corruption to you, but you have to admit that he has a point. Although you're not too sure what "naturally develop" means.

I don't think we're scolding him the same way we are Amata. Yaraon we're telling off for being short sighted about the long-term relation ship we're proposing. He stands to gain a lot more by playing ball with us than trying to manipulate us and we need him to know it. Amata, on the other hand, we need to take her personal distaste for gods somewhere other than the negotiating table. Pissing allies off is a good way to lose them and a bad way to keep them from demanding human sacrifices for any kind of service.

You sigh. "I see no reason why I shouldn't. How long will it take?"

"Well, I don't know when they'll come and see you, or even if, and how big of a deal they'll make it to be." He explains.

"Knowing the Celestial Bureaucracy, probably whatever is most inconvenient to us at the time in question." Amata grumbles.

"No, I meant how long before your child can become the god of my lands." You point out.

"Oh, that depends on you and... well, a lot of factors."

You frown, trying to understand and failing. "I'm sorry?"

"...Well, our birth doesn't work like it does with humans, obviously." He points out. "Gods are naturally born when there is human prayer, thought or belief channeled into something that does not already have a god of its own. Such is the case for your land: it has no gods watching over it, since it's something literally new."

"Yes, but how is this god-to-be then "your and Smoke's son" as opposed to, you know, just any other god?"

"Well, because he was quite literally born, or rather conceived is a more appropriate word, out of us two." He explains. "It is our actions that helped stabilize the land into Creation, and made them fertile and inhabitable. So any god that will naturally spring from it will be our offspring, in that sense."

You kind of manage to follow that line of reasoning. "So he is going to need the natural prayer and belief that, I imagine, will naturally come when people will start moving and living here in large numbers."

"Precisely." He nods.

>Just how much prayer and belief does he need, to be born? Would one person's be enough?

OP, just wanted to mention I greatly enjoy this quest. Wanted to suggest the following ideas as I generally miss when it is running.

1. Irene decoration. If you have someone that looks like a living statue, why not abuse it? See if you can stick Irene in a park or something.
2. Belled collar for Dancing Smoke, so you can tell when she is being bad. It works for cats, so why not? Possibly tail decorations as well.
3. Convince Tia to show Irene or Samiel her dick collection to spur very awkward conversation.
4. What ELSE can Tia build with corpses? A manse perhaps? Ice cream stand? With Tia's imagination and Irene's engineering, I am sure they can make something wonderful.

"Actually, what can you tell me of the way the Celestial Bureaucracy works around here?" You ask him.

"It doesn't." Amata sneers.

"Amata, you should be-" You start getting worked up, but Yaraon stops you.

"...No, Maka. She's right, kind of. Corruption is everywhere, and gods do everything they think they can get away with, regardless of rules."

You don't seem to be better than the others, you think. But don't say that out loud. Instead, you let him continue.

"The chief Censor of the West is Fahkaru, but he's so sick of all the corruption that he's essentially given up. He leaves what he can to his immediate subordinates, most of which are lazy, corrupt as well, or hopelessly overworked."

"So that's why you don't want to involve them?" You ask.

"Yes. Best to solve things between ourselves."

"How would my city being a temple-city work out with all this?"

"Temple-city to?" He asks.

"The Unconquered Sun, obviously."

He takes a moment to think about it. "Then the local god would essentially be an intermediary for the Sun. A Golden God. A bit like that guy in charge of An-Teng."

"As he naturally develops in this land." You ponder. "...How much belief does a god need, anyway? Would a single person's prayer be enough?"

"It happens in stories and legends." He shrugs, not putting much stock in it apparently.

"There was a theatrical play showing in Tianna about that once. Two lovers kept apart by a family feud. They both pray with all their hearts to the gods, while being hundreds of miles apart, and make a wish so strongly that it creates a small god, who then spends the rest of the play trying to get them back together." She smiles at the memory. "It was a nice story."

Not to mention that we have to find the Lintha in the first place.

Well, after making a bit of an ass of yourself like that, you return to Silk's palace, in the dead of the night. A few clouds are passing by, swept by the stiff wind, and obscuring the moon.

"...Why are you so mad at gods in general, Amata?" You ask her along the way.

"Not all of them." She points out. "Only the lazy, corrupt, or violent. It's not my fault nearly all of them are like that." She sighs deeply. "...I'll try and restrain myself from being so aggressive next time."

"Thank you." You reply. You sense that she must've had some kind of bad experience with a god, but it's clear she doesn't want to talk about it.

You return to the swamp and back to the tower of white stone. Everyone is fast asleep by now.

Well, except for Silk, who doesn't need to sleep and you find sitting on her throne. She welcomes your return as warmly as usual (with essentially a body slam). "Maka! Welcome back!"

Fianceé night
>>
With a silent nod of agreement, you and Amata (and Silk in tow) slip into Tia's bed. You both have some lingering frustrations to work out after all, and Tia's the only one resilient enough to be an appropriate victim.

Social + Zenith + IPS = 10 10 9 5 2 9 5 10 8 10 = 11 successes

During the night, you hold back nothing. Maybe you even overdo it.

Scratch that, you definitely overdo it. Fortunately you're overdoing it in private and with people who you know can survive what you're putting them through, and enjoy it as well (and boy, do they enjoy it).

You wake up the next day, as dawn breaks, or rather you realize dawn is breaking: you never slept.
The queen, sturdy but less so than Tia, was the first to just completely give up during the night. Tia fought on bravely, but in the end, you managed to overwhelm even her. The tables have turned since you first met her, and even all her wildest in-bed shapeshifting couldn't keep up with you.

After her knock-out, you spent the rest of the night with Silk, exploring the depths of your master-pet relationship. If at first you were still suspicious of your loyalty, now you know for sure that she'll never leave your side, as hopelessly addicted to you as she is.

Also, over the course of the night she has grown in size and mass, almost tripling, clearly feeding off the passion of the night. Good thing her beds are large enough.

With your two future spouses out for the count, likely for a long count, what will you do?

>wait for them to wake up

For a long minute, you fantasize about dragging more people in your wild night. But in the end, you restrain yourself, instead just wasting an extra hour or so amusing yourself with Silk before getting up and dressed.

The downside of all this is, of course, is that you don't feel fully satisfied yourself. You could keep going.

...But yes, for now it's better to stop. You could pay another visit to the water court later if you want to. Or...

Alright, focus, Maka.

You take a long bath and eat breakfast, as the rest of the tower, sans Tia and Amata, wakes up as well.

Silk is also back to normal size. You can only imagine she went to store the gossamer somewhere or something like that.

well the idea is to get the perspective and knowledge of Mikahil so we know that much more.

He's an obviously well connected man with a fancy boat and a mind for these sorts of things so the sooner we get him involved the more time we have to really hammer out a strong plan.

Plus his connections might mean he will have a better idea of where the Lintha are operating from in the local waters, the number of ships they have, etc.

We can probably do it anytime we want, actually since we have to attack the Lintha soon, we should start training the groups as a whole now

It's late morning and still no sign of Tia or Amata, so you decide to spend some time training. Undecided between Swallow or Millian, you just go with whoever you happen to meet first, and that happens to be the maid.

"...Train? Me?" She frowns, putting down the tray with tea and biscuits on the table. "Are you dissatisfied with my work?"

"I- oh, I don't mean maid training." You point out, understanding the miscommunication. "I meant the same kind of training Regis is doing. Some self-defense training."

"Self-defense?" She wonders.

"You never know what could happen. And I have a power that lets me train people quite effectively."

"Well... A lot of basic chores in this strange palace seem to take care of themselves, so I don't have a lot to do." She reasons. "Should I get changed?"

"Is your maid outfit comfortable to move into?" You ask her back.

She tugs at the skirt. "Comfortable enough, I guess?"

"Then that will be fine." You smile, accompanying her outside.

In the following four hours, you make her run, do some basic stretching and weight-lifting, and similar basic exercises. Nothing weird or outrageous, but you see her steadily getting better and better, and you quickly add on to the weights, speeds and distances as she improves.

At the end of the session, of course, she's completely exhausted, and you allow her to take a break for the rest of the day.

By now, your two future spouses have woken up, though they still seem vaguely zombie-like. They're half-sprawled sitting on a table, amidst the remainders of their breakfast (in the afternoon), quietly mumbling incomprehensibly to each other.

Mikahil is quietly reading a book nearby, and Valeriana is apparently still at work in her room. Zareen is sampling wines (which Silk for some reason has, or maybe just made), and you see Swallow in the garden, going through martial arts katas.

Even though you already trained someone for the day, you decide to go and spend some time watching Swallow's katas and exercises, just outside of the white tower.

The landscape all around is very, very low water, about an inch, over a hard, marble-like surface, but this doesn't seem to disturb him. He evidently prefers to train in the open rather than inside the tower.

Every movement of his is calm, collected and focused. He moves with the grace and ease of someone who practiced every motion countless times.

You have a lot on your mind. You'd like to get to know him better. To know if you can trust him. To know if you can earn his trust, too.
