>Previously

Having awakened in a field, sans memories, you met a young man by the name of Inigo, who seemed willing to help you out.

After a brief skirmish with some bandits harassing a merchant, you wound up agreeing to serve as bodyguards, at least until the next town.
>>

Yay, the quest that only a few people seem to give a shit about is back.

Wish this was more popular, just to ensure that it would continue to a alid conclusion

>Morgan

You stretch as you walk into the city of Rada'tou. The trip here had been relatively peaceful- only a couple of green thugs had tried to rob the merchant you had agreed to guard after you joined up.

Glancing around, you seem to be in the merchant quarter...

"So, how about that cup of tea?" Inigo asks, walking up and tapping you on the shoulder...

...It does sound tempting, but you also have some stuff you could see about selling, and maybe find the ...

>Stat boosting items are "passive" for the purposes of this Quest. It's basically giving you a magical enhancement at the moment, no usage necessary. Stuff like dragonshields get turned into small charms, as an aside.
>>
>>31781656
Mages are attractive, but we started with much more strength than magic, we're probably better off building for strength. Especially since I doubt we're going to get the opportunity to do the vengeance, vantage, wrath, nosferatu combo
>>
>>31781843
I think that we should build Str too, we have a shiny rock and all, and from what I remember those rocks tend to run based on Str.
>>
>>31781990
Manaketes are indeed strength-based attackers.

We may need to become a wyvern lord at some point to learn how to weave and dodge around swords, in order to avoid those dreaded wyrmslayer blades

"Sure!" You say cheerfully, looking around. There's probably a good tea shop near whatever government buildings this place has....

Inigo seems surprised, and you grab his arm, dragging him along until you find a place that fits your definition of "good"... And his of "expensive".

After a slight hassle about coinage- evidently, gold from 'Ylisse' is a little lighter than gold from Cho'sin-, the two of you are seated, and sipping at tea.

"So, uh..." Inigo seems a bit sheepish. "Anything you want to talk about?"

You shrug.

"Well, maybe where you learned to use a sword like that." You say. "I think I remember something about that positioning, but..."

That's right... A few flashes of memory, of someone using those same general strokes on... Something came when you were watching him dispatch that second batch of bandits...

"Ah, that style?" He shrugs. "My father taught both my sister and I the basics of his style, and we expanded on them later."

"Based on what we were fighting, well, we wound up with rather odd styles that failed to account for parrying..." He rubs the back of his head. "Which I think you noticed."

You nod at that. His expression when that bandit had thrown his swing off had been priceless.

"Yeah, I get what you mean." You say.

....There's a lull as the two of you sip tea in relative silence.

"...So, what do you think about this town?" You ask, as Inigo pours a second cup for himself.

He pauses and appears to be in thought for a moment.

"It seems... Lively." He shakes his head. "Where I'm from, there... Aren't many cities left. It's mostly ramshackle villages, and probably none by now..."

He seems to get a bit depressed thinking about it, but shakes his head.

"Ah, well. We may as well enjoy it while we're here." Inigo's tone is back to a cheerful one, and he pours you another cup of tea.

... You finish up after a while, and head out.

Inigo evidently plans to track down lodging for the night, and asks you to meet up at the market at sundown, probably a couple of hours from now...

You nod to yourself, heading to find a blacksmith or secondhand weapons dealer.

After a short while, you find your way into a shop by the name of "Anna's Emporium". Behind the counter, there's a rather plain looking man, with brown hair.

"Ah, hello there. I'm Jake. New in town?" He asks, glancing over to you as you walk in.

You nod.

"Just arrived earlier. The name's Morgan." You say, carefully pulling out the dagger you... Liberated earlier, as well as the copper axe, and setting them on the counter. "What can you give me for these?"

The man looks over the two weapons appraisingly, picking up the dagger and feeling its weight, then examining the axe in a similar manner...

"Hm... Battle-ready weapons, slightly worn..." He mutters, before looking over his shoulder...

"Thirty for the axe, and forty for the knife." He says finally, shaking his head. "Not much more I can, given how everyone's making weapons these days."

Seventy gold altogether, then...? Hm...

You pause for a moment, before reaching out and picking up both weapons.

"Ah, you say that when they're separated." You start, grabbing a cord from one of your pockets. "But, when combined, they form..."

Jake watches with a bemused expression as you lash the weapons together, dropping one or the other a few times before finally succeeding.

"Behold! The fearsome dragonslaying axe, Armads!" You say, holding you 'masterpiece' out to the shopkeeper.

"The knife's at an odd angle. It'll slip in a few seconds." He says, grinning.

...There's a thud as it hits the ground.

...You attempt a few more schemes of a similar nature over the next hour, before Jake finally sighs.

"Look, that was the best offer I could give you." He says, shaking his head. "Still, you managed to at least entertain me during the slow time. I'll give you 60, and-"

He pauses, turning around to a bookshelf and rummaging through it, before finally setting a brown book in front of you, cover decorated by two scythes of green-blue magic.

"This tome. It's been sitting here since no one seems to want to buy wind magic these days." He finishes, tapping it.

...From a glance, you can tell that the tome's more powerful than a basic wind spell. This is a great offer....

Jake sighs, and counts out the gold, before sliding it and the tome to you.

Picking it up, you can practically feel it thrum with power. It's less potent than thunder, but... It hits better, and if it hits right is worse on your opponents.

Saying goodbye, you leave, coinpurse now happily full, and new book tucked under your arm.

You nod to yourself, practically skipping off to look around.

You pass by a fairly busy handful of blacksmiths, pounding away at spear tips. and swords, before moving on towards the stables.

You see a number of horses being run through their paces by their riders, and moving on past there, you find it...

A library of maps, old books of strategy, and journals of wars.

You spend quite some time reading and getting a handle on the area... At least strategically, if not tactically.

When you finally get pulled out by the librarian, you see the sun beginning to set.

Better go meet with Inigo, then.

"Nope~! I kept him from getting bored, and he gave me a book as a bonus for the sale." You say, holding out the tome.

It's also more fun to write Morgan than Yu, or as the current place Persona Quest got stopped at, Yumi.....

"Know the town's name?" You ask, getting a shake of the head as the two of you start walking.

"Just that it's a few miles North of here. The region doesn't really name small villages much." Inigo replies. "Why?"

"If I knew it, I could look up known ambush points... Or any number of other useful trivia." Your tone goes smug. "I'm not just a pretty face and good with an axe, you know."

"Ah, right. You're a 'tactician', aren't you?" He rubs the back of his head sheepishly. "Then yes, whatever help you can offer would be appreciated."

"Great! I'll join you when you head out in the morning, then!" You say.

Inigo sighs as you reach the inn, but nods.

"Alright. Just be ready to fight if we need to..." He says, and the two of you head in.

....

Finally in a real room, with a real bed, you take a minute to relax.... Maybe you should get cleaned up a bit with the washbin that the innkeeper provided, since you've haven't since you woke up in that field, about a half week ago....

As you're cleaning, you notice an odd mark on the inside of your left arm... It looks like... Wings with eyes... Maybe you should see if there's anything about that in books, or if Inigo knows something... Come to think of it, his right eye looks kinda odd...

You shrug, getting finishing your cleanup and going to sleep in short order. Tomorrow's gonna be a day, alright....

You finish getting dressed, putting your tomes into your coat pockets, and hefting your axe....

Stepping out the door, the hall is clear, and when you head downstairs, you see Inigo pacing, face somewhat flushed.

"Ah, you're up!" He says when he notices you. "It was getting late, so I thought I'd check on you, but, uh, er... "

He's fumbling. Looks like he did peek, but only accidentally....

There's silence for a few minutes, and then Inigo sighs as well.

"Tell you what." You say, after another quiet stretch of road. "Show me your dancing sometime. I'm sure that it's good, if it shows in your fighting."

"Alright. But not for a while." He nods. "I think I'll see if I can track her down in this time. Maybe she knows the second part of what she was teaching me now..."

He shakes his head.

"That's for later, though."

There's more silence, before your arm starts to itch. Oh, right.

You roll up your sleeve, tapping Inigo on the shoulder.

"Hey, you know anything about this mark?" You ask.

....He's visibly discomforted. He seems to be thinking for a minute, before nodding to you.

"That's the mark of a Holy Bloodline... And a strong one, at that..." He says, looking at it carefully. "...I take it you noticed my eye?"

"Yeah. It was kinda freaking me out for a bit, but then I just passed it off as a quirk, or normal for a guy found in the woods." You shrug. "You know what mine is? And what's yours?"

"I don't know about yours. For all I know, it could be some obscure dragon with a blood pact." He shrugs, then the two of you start moving again.

Indeed she is, but she's a waste of Gaius, much better spent on Kjelle or Noire.

>Check on the fields

You nudge Inigo, pointing to the empty fields of... Corn, it looks like.

He nods, and draws his sword and shield, leading the way towards there.

You consider your weapon option, and leave them where you can quickly grab one or the other...

Making your way through the fields, you keep looking around....

There's a flattened spot, and when you check, it looks like a body fell there... There's no blood, and no evidence of one, though....

As you look around, you get a feeling... Of some form of magic, familiar to you somehow, that you can't quite place...

Inigo seems somewhat disturbed by the spot, and the two of you make your way back out of the field carefully.

"So. Anything other than that you noticed?" He asks, glancing back.

He's obviously nervous about this place...

>Strange magic...

You nod.

"Yeah. There was something odd around there... Some sort of magic I can't quite place..." You say, shaking your head. "It felt like... A forest fire after a blizzard? Cold, but you can feel the heat that was there?"

"...Then we need to investigate that fort." He says. "Sounds like someone's moved into town and is making Risen..."

...That's-

Your head is suddenly in pain, and you grab at it, stumbling forwards...

Zombies... Raised by the Grimleal... Mindless. Follow orders precisely. Rank and file. Expendable.

...Seems like some of your memories are returning...

You shake your head as the pain goes away.

Inigo has a concerned look on his face, and is leaning over to try and help you up...

You steady yourself as you stand up, looking towards where the fort should be.

"Are you alright?" He asks, putting a hand on your shoulder. "You looked like you were in pain a moment ago..."

"Yeah. I got some memories back, about those things.." You nod. "We need to check the fort, but... There's a chance there are survivors in town..."

...Inigo seems as troubled as you are about this choice...

>Fort. If there are survivors now, they'll be there later.
>Town. Better make sure anyone who's alive stays so.

So, things were slow for me writing tonight, mostly because I'm still not completely recovered from the 'fun' that was dental work. I'm calling it a night, and continuing in the morning.

your "quick" bites take a while huh?

"We need to check for survivors first." You say, shaking your head. "That way, we can get them on the way to somewhere safe while we deal with whoever's in the fort."

Inigo nods, and the two of you move on to the village itself...

It's a ghost town. You can see a few doors that look to have been busted down, with... Claws, axes, and some form of pure force.

Going through the dozen-odd houses, all devoid of inhabitants, you and Inigo finally find... Something.

Unfortunately, it appears to be a zombie's body, left where it fell. The fact that it's wearing a Valmese uniform is noted by Inigo, as disturbing.

...After poking it enough to confirm its death, and double checking the empty town, the two of you move on, approaching the small fortress- more of a glorified outpost- fairly cautiously.

Outside of the gate to the small base, you can see what appears to be two people standing guard... And you can recognize one tattered Valmese uniform, while the other looks to be wearing damaged clothing you'd expect of a farmer...

Risen.

Blast it at a range with inigo ready as personal guard if it gets too close

>Check for more
>Blast it

You glance around.

Nothing in the trees or on the side... And since this is the only entrance you know of, it makes sense to put guards here.

You pull out your thunder tome, and prepare to cast-

...You can feel something in the magic changing, and the bolt of lightning seems more... Radiant as it impacts on the Risen in the Valmese uniform. Light billows out of its eye sockets as it lets out a howling moan, and Inigo quickly steps in front of you, slashing the arm off of the second as it charges.

"Not today." He shakes his head, and shifting his position to give you a clear shot.

You fire a second blast at the disarmed Risen, watching as it howls from the holy light, as the first begins to dissolve.

One shot like that and they're done, huh?

Inigo lets out a sigh, glancing back at you.

"How did you do that?" He asks. Probably about the change in your spell.

You shake your head, stepping up towards the door.

"I honestly don't know. It happened when I started to cast, but... I can do it again, though." You nod. Either of your tomes should be potent against these monsters with that affecting them...

"Ah, well. That's something." He says with a shrug. "Makes me really wish you had been with us, ins-"

He seems to cut himself off, and you brush the thing he was saying off. Probably something about preferring you to one of his companion... Probably the coward he mentioned.

You check the gate, finding a lever that seems to open it... A tug has the portcullis slide up, leaving a cleared path.

Go in with Inigo at the front and you behind.

If he hesitates, kick him.

Maybe we should keep Inigo outside, to keep the door clear in case more show up
Or to close it to keep them from getting in

>Inigo in front, kick him if he slows down

"Mind going in before me?" You ask, getting a nod from Inigo.

"Ah, right. I can keep them off while you cast." He says, adjusting his grip on the sword and his shield. "Let's go, then."
The two of you move in, ready for combat.

The first room you find after the courtyard is... An empty entry hall. Signs of people being dragged through can be seen on the floor, and the place looks trashed.

Slight marks of blood are visible, too...

Inigo shudders briefly, and the two of you move onto the next room. Candles and a few braziers rest on an altar, with a purple and black banner hanging behind it...

...You're getting a headache in here...

Through the door on the other side of the makeshift temple, you can hear moaning. Of the dead sort.

Probably... Three to six Risen in there.

>Plan?
>>
>>31835720
Move something in front of the door (Something they'll have to climb up) and kill them with your ax, while they climb.
We've already got a bottleneck advantage here.

Alternatively, lay out the banner in front of the door, then lure them onto it and set it on fire as a trap

Alternatively, both Morgan and inigo hold one side of the banner and knock on the door, then they run in and they get all tangled up in the banner scooby doo style, then you burn the shit out of them, or hack their heads off, or whatever.

This is Awakening. "Wrong setting" is not quite the right wording... Perhaps "Too late" is?

Alright, this thread is too dead. Calling it quits for now.
