Welcome to Banished Quest!
You take the role of a young mage, labeled a criminal by his people and cast out into the wider world. In the last thread, the monster that dwells inside your cloak interrogated a bandit for you and you finally reached the vault.

You reach into your cloak, pulling out the necklace you retrieved from the vatis you killed. The stone at the center of the necklace glows slightly this close to the vault door, and only glows brighter the closer you move it towards its slot. Just as you're about to unlock the vault door you hesitate, and turn to look at your companions. “On second thought, lets loot the room first. Just to be on the safe side.”

Your companions groan. Profectus complains. “Damn it, Mik! Don't get my hopes up like that. The anticipation is killing me here.” Chryssa nods in agreement. “Look, I know we're all eager to get to the treasure here but there's still a chance we'll open this door and find ourselves in yet another fight, so lets go ahead and steal everything now so we don't have to worry about it later.”

They don't seem entirely happy about it, but they don't complain any further. The five of you fan out and start searching through the room for anything of value. Most of the bandits didn't seem to have much, at least not out in the open. You find a few coin purses, a journal, and two keys ferreted away under mattresses. Considering there are five chest in the room, you get the feeling only two of the bandits were stupid enough to hide their keys under their mattresses.
>>
You try one key at each of the chest until you find the one it opens, and are rewarded by... nothing much, really. A small collection of books, a pipe, and a large bag of pipeweed. The books aren't really anything of note, a history of Pidjata that looks older than you are, a small tome containing devotional hymns to Pani, and a large book cataloging plants found in the desert and their alchemical uses. It all goes into the cloak, and you move on.

You try the other chest until you find the chest unlocked b the other key you found. Opening the chest, you find a large collection of liquors. Makes sense, you'd probably lock up your booze too if you were living in a barracks. He has a few bottles of sorghum beer sweetened with honey, several bottles of wine ranging from what you recognize as a fine vintage to an unlabeled bottle that smells more like vinegar than wine. He also had a date liquor you never much cared for, but it all goes into the cloak regardless. Absentmindedly you wonder if Ricky has a taste for alcohol before moving on.

The remaining three chest you lack keys for, and it would probably take quite a bit of combing through the facility to find where they were hidden. You have a set of lockpicks, but you can tell your companions are getting impatient and would rather just get on with opening the vault. Of course, you could just smash the locks. However, that runs the risk of breaking anything fragile inside.

You finally decide it's time to open the vault, the entire reason you investigated this ruin in the first place. You press the key into its slot and immediately the wall begins to part. You take a few cautious steps back, ready to leap out of the way of an arrow trap or a swinging log or some other such nonsense, but instead you're greeted by the sight of a simple, unadorned office. There's a desk against one wall with papers strew across it, and a large bed against the other. Granted, the bed looks rather comfortable, but you don't see any vast treasures.

You step cautiously into Baldev's quarters, and spot a door adjacent the desk that you hadn't initially seen. It's a simple oaken door, slightly rotted, and adorned by a tarnished bronze plaque which reads 'Treasury'. You feel your heart pounding in your chest as you grasp the handle and lean back, using all your weight to pull the door open. A rush of cold air greets you, but just from the glimpse you're offered you feel a deep sense of catharsis wash over you.

Inside, ordered neatly by contents, are row upon row of chest. A squat scroll rack, several armor stands containing pieces you're unfamiliar with, and a rack of weapons sit against one wall while the other is taken up by a stack of crates taller than you are. Taking a walk through the treasury and reading the labels on the chest, you find two filled to the brim with gold coins, and six stuffed with silver. One contains nothing but precious gemstones and another exotic spices from the elaudian border. One contains a length of the finest silk, and another is filled with incense.

What will you investigate first?

So why didn't people pick shoving the chest into the cloak?
>>
You make your way towards the scroll rack, crouching down and pulling back the small sliding cover that keeps the scrolls dry. You're slightly disappointed to see it's not just filled to the brim with all manner of metamagic manuals, but there are quite a few good finds inside. Carefully rolling out one particularly ancient scroll, you take a moment to read through the introduction. From what you can tell just from a cursory glance, it's discussing the methods by which one can exclude specific people from the effects of a spell, and it dubs this the Selective metamagic.

Selecting one of the newer looking scrolls, you see it's a fairly basic Beam metamagic. The kind the Shah has scribes copying and distributing to his mages for a nominal fee. It never particularly interested you, its main selling point being it doesn't allow the target a chance to dodge before the spell hits.

You pull out the next scroll and see it's quite a bit more interesting. Unfurling the scroll you find you have to read the first few paragraphs to get any idea what you're reading. It discusses the possibility of casting a spell at range without the various effects that come with it. No jets of flame, no spears of ice, no roiling balls of poison. It dubs these 'hidden spells'. You can imagine it would be useful if you wished to cast a spell in public or simply to throw off someone attempting to dodge.

The last scroll in the rack isn't particularly interesting but it is quite useful. It's a scroll describing how one would go about casting an Area of Effect spell. The more vys one expends when using this metamagic effect in conjunction with an effect or element, the wider the area effected is.
(1/2)
>>
Unfortunately, those are the only scrolls in the rack. Still, you can see plenty of uses for the Selective effect in conjunction the the area of effect metamagic. You tuck each of them into your cloak gently, and then push yourself to your feet. A quick look around reveals that Chryssa has taken an interest in the rack of weapons, and is currently weighing some sort of overly elaborate axe in her hand. Fulvia is inspecting the gemstones with some curiosity, while Profectus has wrapped himself in a length of silk. Captain Darzi inspects the armors, particularly an odd piece composed of what you think is stone, though you're not certain.

“Alright folks!” You whip off your cloak, holding it out in front of you. “Everything goes into the cloak, we'll have plenty of time to divide it all up later!” Somewhat reluctantly, people start tearing themselves away from the goodies. The crates and armor you'll have to push into the cloak, but the weapons and the chest can be tossed in easily enough. While you companions work to get everything packed away, Profectus brings up a point. “So, just how are we going to be dividing the loot?” He glances at Captain Darzi. “Four ways, five ways?”

You smirk. “Well, technically it'll be three and a half ways. Chryssa forfeited her share, and you forfeited half of your share. I assume Captain Darzi would like a cut of the loot-” You glance at her, and she nods to indicate that yes, she would. “-And Fulvia didn't bet, so she gets a cut. Then I get the rest.” Fulvia speaks up. “So, shouldn't it technically be split five ways, with you getting two and a half shares?” You think about it for a moment, and then nod. “That would be the way to do it.”

Profectus sighs defeated. “I was hoping you'd forgotten. Foolish of me, I know.” Chryssa merely shrugs her shoulders. “I don't much mind, I'll probably just guilt you into getting me a gift anyway, and you'll probably end up giving Profectus some sort of allowance if he ever wants to go out. After all, nobody wants a repeat of the Golden Cat incident.” You glare at her, though there really isn't any feeling behind it. “Don't just start taking it for granted that I'll just shell out for anything you two would like. It has to benefit the party as a whole.”
(1/2)
>>
>>31786440
Oh yeah I forgot about that.

Seconding
>>
You bicker in a lighthearted sort of way until everything that's easily loaded is loaded, and then you move over to the armors and drape your cloak over each one. It takes some pulling and some effort, but eventually you get all four sets packed into the cloak. Then you move on to the stacks of crates. There's four stacks of three crates each, for a total of twelve. Each one is sealed first by a nailed down lid and then the top is coated with wax. You note that the insignia of El-Amin is stamped into the top of the wax, though from what you can tell they're unopened. Odd, all things considered. It's a team effort to toss your cloak and pull it down onto the crates, but Ricky's tentacles slide out and help pull them in. Really, he does most of the work.

By the time you've finished, the treasury is almost bare. A few empty racks, but not much else. Satisfied with your handiwork, you exit the vault. It seems Chryssa had the forethought to toss the three chest from the barracks you lacked keys for into the cloak along with the chest from the treasury.

>Head to the mine shaft, you want to put an end to Baldev and make sure bandits no longer plague the pass.

You make your way out of the barracks, reaching into your cloak to withdraw a lantern. Since you took them all, the hallways have gotten quite a bit harder to navigate. You're actually surprised to see that the lantern is dark when you first withdraw it from your cloak, but it quickly sparks back to life. You suppose that since it stays lit by draining ambient vys, and as far as you can tell the void is completely devoid of vys, the lanterns burned themselves out fairly quickly.

You hold the lantern out in front of you and navigate your way towards the crossroads where you heard the echoing sort of silence that one only finds in especially large spaces. It's not as hard as you'd expected, since it turns out to just be the path that's still lit. Granted, getting back will probably be more difficult since you take the lanterns you pass, adding another six to your collection before you reach what you can only imagine is the mine shaft.

You're at the top of the shaft, and below you is a sheer drop that you can't see the bottom of. Fulvia had mention it drops fifteen miles into the crust of the planet, and judging from the innumerable crossways linking what you think is a massive central support pillar to the mine shaft's walls, each level is just as expansive as the one you're currently on. You imagine that even a member of a race as long lived as yours could spend several life times just exploring the halls and barely scratch the surface.

Baldev is supposedly at the bottom, as Captain Darzi tossed his key over the edge. However, you cannot imagine that the key would survive a fall that far, or even reach the bottom considering the number of bridges crisscrossing the gap. To you it almost seems more like a suicidal and ultimately futile errand.

>Nothing to do but start at the top and work your way down. Keep an eye out for anything of interest, but don't waste time searching every level.

>Fulvia seemed to know something about this ruin, consult her before going any further.

While considering:

>Surely the Rhynians had some way to quickly transport goods from bottom to top, look for such a device.
>>
“Well, Fulvia. You're the expert here. Tell me about this thing. Is there any way to get down it quickly? Is it even worth the effort?” She steps out onto the bridge that links this hallway with the central pillar, and leans over the edge to look down. “Well, in my time there was a lift that carried goods from the bottom to the top, and prisoners from the top to the bottom. However, if my memory is correct it was prone to breaking and malfunction, and would often end up locked on one particular level until a Vatis could come and repair it.”

She pauses to consider your second question. “The upper levels should be depleted of the vast majority of resources, and probably wouldn't be worth investigating. Especially considering all the looters that have surely come through here in the thousand years since its closure. That said, this mine was the backbone of Rhynian manufacture in this region, and many of the levels that fell into disuse were adapted for other purposes. I believe for a time the Empire attempted to colonize the vacated space, but after fewer colonist volunteered to live in the regions most infamous prison than the administration had expected it was instead turned built up with military and research facilities. Overall, I would say it might be worth it but it may simply prove too dangerous and too time consuming.”

Chryssa speaks up. “Just how large is this place? I mean, how many levels?” Fulvia responds promptly with. “Eight thousand four hundred forty eight individual levels, according to my most recent records on the subject. This number is likely inaccurate, as keeping track was never a priority for the prison's administrators.”

You look down towards the bottom of the shaft, recalling the stories that bandit had told you of the insane miners, the horrible escaped experiments, and all else that dwelled in the depths. You're not even sure if you're at a level where you could safely traverse this labyrinthine complex and face the challenges that lie within, not to mention you're still rather drained just from clearing out the first level.

On the other hand, who knows what sort of untold riches might lie deep within this mine, and come to think of it it's not like you actually need to go down level by level. Like Fulvia said, the upper levels are probably useless, only the lower levels will have anything good. Even if you don't find anything other than what you've already taken from the treasury, at the very least you want to verify that Baldev is dead and that he won't be out looking for revenge on the asshole who stole all of his ill-gotten gains.

“Lets find that lift.” You announce your intentions to the party and set off across the bridge. Chrys, Prof, and Captain Darzi hesitate for a moment, but follow you without complaint. Fulvia is leading the way, she seems perfectly at home here. In fact, she probably looks more comfortable than you've seen her since you left the Rhynian Facility you found her in. She leads you through winding hallways and down several flights of stairs. You cross through wide open areas that almost remind you of plazas, and then weave your way through alleys so narrow you can barely fit your shoulders through.

Unlike the rest of the fortress, this place is absolutely covered in graffiti. It's mostly things like 'So and so was here' or 'So and so is an asshole' or 'I didn't do it'. The further you go towards the center of this central pillar though the more recent the graffiti seems. You start to see things like 'Lost seven on level 213' and 'Cave in level 56'. The messages of past adventurers who have delved this ruin, you imagine.

and...

Finally, you reach a wide chamber with what appears to be a lift at the center. It's basically a steel reinforced hole in the ground, what you imagine to be the actual lift not present. On the floor next to it is a pillar with a receptacle that one might insert a gem into, though it currently lies empty. Fulvia approaches the pedestal and reaches up to the back of her neck, dropping the projection she keeps up to appear human and opening the hatch that holds the Core. “Place me into the pedestal, I'll see if I can't call the lift.”

You do as she ask, plucking the glowing blue gem from its holding receptacle and catching her body before it can hit the ground. You set the construct aside gently and then place Fulvia into the central indentation on the pedestal. Nothing immediately happens, but you're fairly certain she can communicate to you via the communication brooch you wear.

You stare for a moment at the pedestal and then shrug. “I think I'll try to get some meditation in, briefly. Would you three mind taking a look at some of this graffiti? Some of it seems like it might have been left behind by other adventurers.” They nod, and you take a few moments to find a comfortable spot near-by to sit down and assume a meditation pose. You slip fairly easily into your meditative trance, and start focusing on refilling your vys reserves.

You don't manage to fill your reserves before Fulvia interrupts, but you do make some good progress. This section of the ruin is surprisingly lacking in ambient vys, unlike the Rhynian facility you previously explored, which was practically saturated with it. After perhaps four hours you've filled your reserves to roughly two thirds of the way full.
>Vys Pool: 19/26

{The lift has gotten stuck on level one hundred three. Please remove me from the pedestal.}

You sigh, eyes snapping open as you force your way to your feet. You march around the elevator shaft to pluck the Core from the indent and place it back in its receptacle in the back of the construct's head. It springs to life quickly, and you help her up. After a few moments of orienting herself her projection reasserts itself and she nods to you. “My thanks. As I said, the lift is currently on level one hundred and three, that's slightly less than a mile down. When I called the lift it was on level seven thousand two hundred eighty six. I believe Baldev was merely attempting to reach the bottom of the mine but the lift got stuck before he could reach his destination, from there he likely proceeded on foot.”

How would you like to meditate on Earth? Unlike Fire and Water, you don't actually know any methods for meditating on Earth so you'll need to provide some write-ins. That said, the walls that surround you are stone, so it's a good environment for meditation.

DC will be 20 to gain insight through meditation, so you might just be able to roll flat and still make it.

You look around at your companions, most of whom still seem fairly absorbed in reading wall graffiti. You note that Chryssa has written your names, that is the names of her, Profectus, Fulvia, and yourself, in big letters on the wall. Probably wise she didn't include Captain Darzi's name, all things considered. You're not even sure if she intends to stick around after she's gotten her revenge against Baldev, and considering that she's a guard captain and you're supposed to be killed on sight you doubt writing her name alongside yours in an ancient ruin would be all that great an idea.

“Everyone, set up camp. There is no rush to get to the bottom, and I doubt Baldev will be able to get back up here in a single day.” Chryssa turns to you, raising an eyebrow. “Really? What if more bandits show up?” You shrug your shoulders. “I'm sure they'll take the darkened, corpse-strewn hallways as a sign that they should run far away quickly.” She thinks about it for a moment, and then nods her head. “That seems reasonable. Even if that doesn't dissuade them they'll likely leave once they discover that the treasury has been cleaned out.”

Profectus starts looking around for something he could start a fire with, while Chryssa sets up her tent and Captain Darzi follows suit with her own, smaller tent. Fulvia, for her part, sets off to explore this level. While your party goes about setting up camp, you resume your meditative stance and slip into a trance. It doesn't take much longer to finish filling your reserves since you got a head start while waiting for Fulvia to raise the lift.

You decide that once you're back to full strength, you ought to work on your understanding of Earth magic. While maintaining your meditative trance, you raise two small parties of earthen figurines from the smoothed stone floors around you. To make it a little more interesting, you provide them with some rocky, boulder-strewn terrain to use to make it a little more interesting and then send them against one another.

It's difficult to play both sides of the conflict without favoring one side, considering you can't exactly ambush yourself. It's not as enjoyable as the match you had against Demetrios. The first skirmish goes poorly, ending in an entirely predictable win for the constructs you marked with quartz bands. However, the second time around you try a different approach. One side you make from clay and give quartz weapons to, while the other side you make from stone and give stone weapons too. You expect it to be a total wipe of the clay constructs, but much to your surprise they put up an admirable fight. It ends up that the stone constructs do win in the end, but only two remain standing.

You feel as though Earth is nearly the polar opposite of water, if only in how it feels. Earth is all about taking very precise, very organized actions. Trying to wing it with Earth magic seemed to result in shoddy work, where as it was really the only way to cast water magic. It's different, and you had some trouble grasping it at first, but you feel like you really made some progress with this session.
>Congratulations! You're half-way to being an apprentice Earth mage!

You come out of your meditative trance slowly and comfortably. Strewn around you are clumps of stone and clay and shards of quartz, the results of your meditation session. It's hard to tell how much time has passed since you started meditating, you can't see the sun and so have no way to gauge the passage of time, but Profectus gathered enough material to build a fire and you meditated long enough for that fire to burn out. Your companions are asleep, save Fulvia who sits a short distance away staring at you curiously. You also believe Captain Darzi is still awake, judging from the quiet sobbing.

When she notices you've finished meditating, Fulvia speaks. “Did you make any progress?” You nod. “I believe so, I think I'm starting to grow more comfortable with Earth magic.” She nods. “That is good, it's been roughly five hours since you began meditating.”

>Wake your companions, you need to get going.

Friendly reminder on the elements.
Nature: Controlling vines, encouraging plant growth, certain extrasensory effects.
Fire: Almost entirely direct attack spells. Ignite flammable objects with a touch, hurl fireballs,
et cetera.
Earth: Manipulating the ground, creating pillars of stone, sinkholes in the sand, hurling
boulders. Also useful for debuffing others, corroding their armor, et cetera.
Metal: Defense spells. Making yourself hardier, warding off mental effects, fortifying armor.
Water: Mostly healing and buffing spells. Knit wounds together, stop blood loss, remove
exhaustion. A few attack spells if near a water source or at high levels.

Levels in the Five Basic Elements
Grandmaster: No further advancement.
Master: DC 35 to gain insight.
Expert: DC 30 to gain Insight.
Vatis: DC 25 to gain insight.
Apprentice: DC 20 to gain insight.
Novice: DC 15 to gain insight.
*Note these are not absolutely required to cast a spell.
Certain elements are complementary. Using them together will enhance the effects of both, at double the cost for each.
(eg. using Metal and Earth together to raise a barricade will result in a barricade made of the nearest metal at the cost of 4 Vys.)

Out of curiosity, you try channeling some earth magic into the control panel on your left forearm. At first, nothing seems to happen. You try to push yourself into a standing position, but as your left hand touches the ground it sinks straight through the stone. You find yourself stuck should deep in the ground, and only with Fulvia's help do you finally manage to right yourself and get to your feet.

Taking a look at the ground where your hand had passed through, there is a wide hole there. Probably from when you were flailing your arm around uselessly. It almost seems as though wherever your hand touched, the stone simply disappeared. You crouch down and press your left hand once more to the stone, and wherever your hand touches the stone boils away into nothing. Almost like it's being converted into raw vys.

You're incredibly hesitant to try this on yourself, or your weapons or armor. What if it disintegrates anything it touches? Incredibly useful, sure, but also dangerous as can be. You cut off the flow of magic and the stone you touch ceases to disintegrate, but that really is quite fascinating.

Fulvia remarks. “You know, even I am not privy to all of the features that come standard with the armor of a Centurion. It never ceases to amaze me the things it seems capable of.” You stare at your hand for a moment, and then shake your head. “Really wish I had some kind of instructional manual. I feel like I've barely scratched the surface with this armor.” You stand up once more and stretch, working the stiffness from your joints. “I believe I will check on Captain Darzi, and then do some exploring of the upper levels. They should be mostly safe, after all, and I do not wish to wake the others.”

I get where you guys are coming from. I just think that she would be a good starting point for building connections. Right now, we at -1 tier, and only the Shah's ring is preventing guards from toasting our arses. Having an authority, any authority, in our good graces would be a good step to build more connections. I'm not expecting to come in as a conquering hero or to become the El-Amin Batman; just not criminal scum would be nice, with the potential for earning more respect. A few things are gonna depend on the good captain's word once we get out of here, and I'd like to get the best footing for it.

Fulvia nods. “I will contact you either when they wake up or if anything should happen. I would appreciate it if you were to check in regularly to ensure me that you are okay.” You shrug your shoulders. “I can do that, shouldn't be too hard.” With that, you part ways with Fulvia and approach Captain Darzi's tent.

You're not exactly sure how to go about speaking with her, but it would seem rude to just barge into her tent. That in mind you gently clear your throat to get her attention. You hear a brief, surprised gasp and then a few moments of silence. Eventually she ask in an uncharacteristically timid voice, barely more than a whisper really. “What is it?” You reply gently. “I merely wished to make sure you were okay, I could hear you crying.”

You hear cloth rustling from inside, and then she pushes aside the flap of her tent. She's not wearing her armor, but she has managed to cover essentially everything save her face. Her eyes are red and cheeks tear streaked, but she wears a brave face. “I'm fine, aghtak. It's merely the stress getting to me. Nothing I can't handle, really.” Her voice is once more firm and confident, it's really almost impressive how rapidly she can go from sobbing and timid to putting up a strong front.

>Ask if she'd like to take a walk through an ancient monster-ridden ruin to take her mind off of it.

What I'm seeing here is that we've got a deficiency. Money? We got that. Firepower? We got that too. Connections? Besides the tenuous and probably expendable friendship of a manipulative archmage and a mysterious merchant, we got very little. Having a Commissioner Gordon on our side might give us the edge in avoiding detection of high government officials or give us the opportunity to get rid of our reputation. Basically, what I'm saying is that having a Stealthy Vatis agent with a team of heavy firepower specialists' loyalty and the word of a guard captain might find employment in a few circles. And also, you guys might be expecting too many short term results. Think about the long term gains of this investment. We're just talking to her, right? It's not like we're traveling to her family home to exorcise their holy shrine.

We should test that as well, maybe it lets us mix them easily.

Not sure, we should (very carefully) experiment with it more.

We could have used it during the assassination.

You didn't add the mystery Crates to our pastebin. The ones that were sealed. Nor did you add the 4 suits or Rocklike Armor

He missed a lot really

Weapons rack

Spices
Incense
Gems

Or the Alcohol or pipeweed

or random books we got

Or scrolls

So who's up for proposing o the gang that we just Pool our wealth?

It would be unwieldy for them to carry their shares around themselves and we have our fancy cloak.

And unless anyone plans on leaving the party soon everything spent will be for the betterment of the party.

We're not the only one who can read the tomes we buy. We should offer to let them read the books we have. Since they have lots of downtime in the saddle.

sounds good. The captain, doubt she will take her 1/5th share being we saved her life and allowed her to get revenge on her torturer. and going to another guy who tortured her.

But what I would like to look into is being something of a horse if possible. for faster transportation. given we originally bought the guar so they could carry stuff. Or at least look into faster/and stronger/younger guar.

The guar will now be solely for transport.

You try to put on your friendliest smile. “Would you like to go on a walk through an ancient monster filled ruin to take your mind off some of the stress of the day? I know risking my life always puts me at ease.” You say it with as much sincerity as you can muster. She narrows her eyes at you for a moment, staring at you as if she were questioning your sanity. Then again, she probably was. Eventually she starts laughing. It's perhaps a pained laugh, but at least she seems little more relaxed. “Alright, sure. I'll walk through the monster filled ruins of an ancient prison, accompanied by a man wearing face-eating cloak, to relax. That's not at all odd.”

The two of you set off towards a stairwell you recall seeing on your way towards the central lift. You end up needing to pull out one of the Rhynian lanterns you've stolen to light the way, most of the torches that hang from the walls have long since burned out and it seems like lighting the top levels of the mine was not nearly as important to the administration as lighting the hallways. Along the way you decide you may as well get to know Captain Darzi slightly better. “So, Captain. Are you from El-Amin?” She shakes her head. “No, I was born to a tribe of bhatak.”

You're somewhat surprised to hear that, knowing what you do of the bhatak. They're a subculture within Pidjata of traditionalist Samjan that insist on following the nomadic ways of their ancestors. Only once every decade do they gather together and settle in one location for more than a few weeks, in a festival known as Jamav. Most city-dwellers consider them backwards degenerates, little better than aghtak. Of course, to be fare they consider city-dwellers to be traitors to their ancestors, and they do often resort to petty theft, prostitution, and mischief to support themselves.

“So how did you end up as the Captain of a company of El-Amin guards?” She reaches her hands up to rub her arms, and smiles in a sort of embarrassed way. “Well, my parents wished for me to sign-on with the guard to run off with the bonus they provide new recruits. However, I performed admirably on the trials they put me through and I was offered command of a squad of other recruits. I felt obligated to stay, and my family left soon afterward. I could probably hunt them down should I ever choose to, but I've never really wanted to find them. I was quite happy with my job up until... well, recent events.”

Finally, you find a stairwell and descend several flights further into the depths of the mine. As you're exiting the stairwell, a bit of graffiti catches your eye. It depicts what you can best describe as some sort of small tusked lizard, though the drawing is crude. It also displays a larger animal you can't identify. Perhaps... a large rat of some sort? You can't tell. Below both is a simple caution insignia. You wonder how old that inscription is?

>I'll call it here. Thanks for playing, everyone! We'll start off next thread with some exploration, and then probably a speed run to the lift, and then the plummet to the bottom. Not sure if we'll get all the way to Baldev next thread.

Sticking around briefly for Q&A. Also, archiving the thread and updating the pastebins.

>You find a few coin purses, a journal, and two keys ferreted away under mattresses.

>The remaining three chest you lack keys for
