You are a young human doctor, abducted by the K'tulu, and recently released by demand of the Galactic Senate. You're in the midst of a pirate raid on the transport ship that is supposed to be taking you to Velik Leis, and are currently gathered around a table with the three other humans that stepped up to try to put together a plan to assault the bridge.

RAPPER TAN

After two hours of picking a holo-map of the transport ship apart piece by piece followed by fierce debate, more like bickering, you're pretty sure that your group has came up with a suitable plan of attack to assault the bridge. Or, at the very least, you've managed to cobble together something that looks like a plan that doesn't end with all of you evacuating your bowels while free-floating through the lifeless void of space. That said, there's still a few small details to work out, and Hans is more than willing to voice that to the group, quite loudly.

"Zeir is no vay in fucking hell zat I am crawling srough any god damned air fents in zis ship!" The german shouts angrily, slamming his fist onto the table and drawing several wary looks from the perimeter guards.

You rub your face tiredly before pinching the bridge of your nose while letting out a sigh. This is exactly how the loud man has responded to every suggestion made that doesn't follow his narrow minded plan, even when said suggestions don't necessarily contradict what he wants to do. "Damn it, Hans, he didn't say that you were going to be going into the vents in the first place. Would you just calm the hell down for a moment? If this plan is going to work then we're going to need two teams anyways. You're more than welcome to take part in the diversion, if you don't think you can handle the physical demands that flanking them this way will require." Angelicia snaps back at him, looking just as tired of his constant outbursts.

It takes all of your professionalism to keep the smirk off your face at the murderous glare he directs towards the punk mechanic, though your amusement wanes a little as he lets out a sigh and nods, "Very vell, zat is vat I vill do zen. But if zis plan is going to vork one of you is going to have to do it."

You have to bite your tongue to stop yourself from commenting that everybody but him had already agreed on that, instead you just let out a sigh and shake out your head. Right now your plan is hinging on using a large group to assault the bridge head on as a distraction for a smaller group to make their way through the ventilation system so that they can flank the pirates and, hopefully, crush the raiders in time to stop whatever it is they have planned. There's no way a head on assault alone will work, if the reports from the scout that came back an hour ago are accurate, you're going to need that flanking team. Unfortunately you have no idea if they've put any guards in the vents and, at the moment, nobody seems to want to volunteer to lead the vent team. You suppose that you could step up and volunteer, but there's a good chance that kicking in the door with guns blazing will be the safer option here.

Huh...you never thought you'd sound so much like an action hero...you're not sure if you like it or not.
>Step up and take command of the vent team. Somebody has to do it and you're pressed on time here.
>Jump on to the diversion team. You have no interest in this, you'll let one, or even both, of the girls lead the flanking team.
>Write-in.

"Small, humid space with a pair of lovely ladies like these? Sounds like a good time to me. Count me in."

Let's go for as creepy as possible Yes, this is a joke comment, but I am voting for joining the vent diversion team.

It's no fun hiding in the back. Time to go full space James Bond. To the vents!

>Step up and take command of the vent team. Somebody has to do it and you're pressed on time here.
Ask about what things the others got from the armory that might help with this situation. Angel got that globe thing, Freida her spear, and Hans his suit.

Then ask for volunteers in the croud who want to help you through the air vents.

>Step up and take command of the vent team. Somebody has to do it and you're pressed on time here.

The medic going to the front-lines. What could go wrong ?
>>
You lean forward on the table, staring at the map for a few seconds before finally nodding, "I'll do it." You announce suddenly, drawing surprised looks from the other planners at the table.

Angelicia eyes you warily, "Are you sure you want to do this, Doc? We don't know what they've got in there..." She says seriously, though from the way she's looking at you it seems that she's grateful that you stepped up to the plate.

"Yeah, I'm sure. We can't afford to sit here arguing all day, we don't know how much time we've got left here." You explain seriously, before shrugging, a joking smile crossing your face, "Besides, what's the worst that could happen? It's just an air vent."

The three of them roll their eyes at your careless attitude, though it seems that you've managed to loosen up the mood at least a little bit. "Alright...well thanks for stepping up, Doc. How many men are you going to take with you. I can tag along too, if you want."

Freida nods in agreement, "I am willing to join you as well..." She starts to say, only to be interrupted by Hans.

"Vat about me? I vill not lead zis assault wizout a partner!"

Angelicia narrows her gaze at the man but sighs as she nods. "You have a point. One of us can go with Jack while the other helps you with the diversion team."
>>
Well, you guess that makes sense. It looks like it's up to you to decide the roster for your team now though. From what you've managed to gather Freida is pretty experienced in these situations and has a pretty good knack for close quarters combat, while Angelicia has the advantage of having Psi abilities, courtesy of the K'tulu's wonderful hospitality. You're also going to have to decide how big your team is going to be. There's no telling what's going to be in the vents, and it wouldn't hurt to have a decent sized team, but you'd be slowed down if you took too many, and besides that the diversion team is going to need all the people they can get if they're going to avoid being wiped out.
>You're going to take Angelicia for your co-commander. You know her well enough to trust her, and you're pretty sure her Psi abilities would be helpful once you got around to flanking the pirates on the bridge.
>You'll take Freida along with you. Her experience with close-quarters combat would be invaluable for combat in the enclosed space of the vents.
>You don't need either of them. They'd be more useful in the diversion team.

And
>It'll be just yourself and whoever you choose to go with you. The smaller the group the quicker you'll move, and the diversion team needs all the help they can get.
>You'll just take a small team with you. Whoever you choose to go with you and an additional two volunteers.
>You're taking as many volunteers as will come with you. You're going to storm through the vents and slaughter anything that gets in your way. Of course doing this might leave the diversion team slightly undermanned.

Hans seems like an ass. You want to get told you're a fucking moron by him, go ahead.
>>
It takes you a few minutes of internal debate, and you look over the map of the vents twice during that time, but finally you step back from the table with a nod. "Alright guys, I'll take Freida and a couple volunteers from the perimeter for our team. You see your friend's face fall slightly, but she nods in acceptance of your plan without complaint.

"Alright, in that case I'll pair up with Hans." She replies, looking somewhat like she just swallowed a lemon, "We'll take a few minutes to make some preparations for the assault and then we'll head out. Once we get to this corridor here, you and Freida will split off and make your way into the vents with your team. If our scout's reports are right then we should make it to where they barricaded themselves in before you get to the bridge. You guys have any questions?"

There's a small moment of silence as the four of you look at each other, as if challenging each other to say something first, before she nods, "Alright, in that case let's break to get ready. Make sure you take the map, Doc, somehow I don't think anybody in there's going to be too thrilled if you try to stop and ask for directions."

You roll your eyes at the reminder, but follow her directions anyways. You've got a little bit of time before you have to get your volunteers and head out. It would probably be well spent making sure that you have all the supplies you might need before that time is up, especially since your med-kit is lacking needed supplies you know that you've only got one and a half magazines left for your pistol, though you do have plenty of ammo for your shotgun. There's a small pile of pistol ammunition that the group has gathered on one of the tables near the vending machines, as well as a small pile of med-kits...you'd rather not think about what might have happened to their owners. You also notice that the rest of the leaders have split off to take care of their own needs, you could talk to them for a bit if you'd like.

>>
What are you going to do to get ready? Choose 2 of the options.
>Get some more pistol ammo. You hope you don't need it, since it would mean you're out of slugs for your shotgun, but it's better to be safe than sorry.
>Go loot the med-kits to bolster your own. You're missing your tourniquets and it wouldn't help to get more bandages and quick-clot powder, just in case.
>Go talk to Angelicia. You're sure she understands your decision to take Freida, but you still want to make sure she doesn't think you don't trust her.
>Go talk to Freida. While the two of you were at the same briefing it wouldn't hurt to go over your plan again with her.
>You could go talk to Hans, but he's an ass and you don't have anything to talk about with him. You suppose you could go over just to antagonize him though...or you could actually try to talk to him normally, though you doubt it'd be much use. *Roll a 3d10 if you want to convince him to talk.
>Go talk with some of the perimeter guard to scout for volunteers. You know that Angelicia is going to put out the call for volunteers later, but if these people are going to risk their lives with you, you'd rather ask them yourself.

You slide the holo-map into one of the pouches in your belt before grabbing your helmet off the table and heading over to the small pile of discarded med kits. You're half way to the table when you notice Angelicia standing off to the side with a looking at you somewhat uncomfortable. A small amount of concern wells up inside you at her exhausted appearance, and you suddenly remember that she's been moving since the raid started, granted so have you, but at least you had a small break after dealing with the man in Tobias and Lizzie's room. With that thought in mind you alter your course to take you towards her, noting the small smile that spreads across her face as you do. "What's up, Doc?" She asks, a smirk crossing her face as you roll your eyes at the overused joke.

"Well, I was going to restock my med kit, since today's activity has kind of taken a toll on it, but I thought that maybe I should check up on you too, since you're here." You say with a shrug, before motioning towards the table, "Interested in joining me?"

The mechanic offers her own shrug in return, "Sure, I guess..." She replies before trailing off as if she was going to say something but thought better of it.

You raise an eyebrow a the sudden lack of communication, "Is something wrong? I...uh, I know you kind of wanted to go with me, and I'm sorry about that. I swear the only reason I chose Freida over you is because she seems to be more experienced in close quarters, and honestly it seems like you might be needed with the diversion team." There's a small pause as both of you look over to Hans, who's shouting at one of the perimeter guards again, "Scratch that...you're definitely going to be needed with them. Trust me, if it was just about trust ten you'd be the first person here that I'd take with me."
(1/2)
Sorry 'bout the wait guys, got a bit sidetracked on my end but we're good to go again.
>>
Angelicia rolls her eyes at your concern, an amused grin crossing her face, "You're fine, Doc, I understand why you chose her and it's no big deal. I'm a big girl, I promise." She says easily, though you do notice that she seems to be a little less reserved now that you've made it known that you trust her over the rest of your allies.

You offer her a smile of her own at that, before turning back to your work stripping the discarded med kit, "That's good, I'd hate to have to tell Lizzie that the two of us aren't on speaking terms just because we didn't get to go exploring the air ducts together. I promise that if you REALLY want to do some exploring then we can go and check out some of those ruins once we get down to the planet. From what the brochure said there's plenty of places that nobody's been before, so I'm sure you'll get to crawl through some vents if you want to." You tease her.

The mechanic lets out a little laugh, her eyes lighting back up for the first time since you got up here, "I'll hold you to that! I'm actually really looking forward to checking out some of the stuff down there. I mean, supposedly whoever was down there had some super advanced tech, I'd love to get the chance to try and take some of it apart and see if I can figure it out."

"Might as well try it out, I guess." You reply with a shrug while stuffing the last packet of quick clot you can find into your bag before pausing to look at her, "So how are you doing?"

"What? You mean like with this whole assault plan or something?" She asks, her face scrunched in confusion.

You shrug, "Sure, that, and everything else since all this insanity's started."
(2/3)
>>
She doesn't answer right away, and when you look over at her you can tell that she's seriously considering the question. Finally she blows out a breath, "Well, to be honest it sucks, obviously. But I mean, I did train for this kind of stuff..." There's a small pause and she laughs disbelievingly, "Well, obviously I never trained to run around killing aliens with crazy fucking mind powers, but you know..." You nod in understanding.

"Yeah...it's pretty messed up." You reply shortly, tossing away the kit that you just finished rooting through before grabbing another one and starting to strip it as well.

Angelicia sighs tiredly before fixing you with a similar look to the one you gave her moments earlier. "What about you?" You blink and look back up at her in surprise, not really expecting the question. She offers you a small smile before continuing, "You're just a doctor, you haven't had any real combat training, right?"

"Well, yeah..."

"But you've done pretty good so far. Freida told me about how you helped her out, and I'm pretty sure I've heard some of the guys around the perimeter talking about how a guy in power armor wearing a scarf an awful lot like yours wiped out a team of those pirates on his own. That doesn't mean that you're okay on the inside though...so seriously, Jack, are you okay?"

You look down at the tourniquet in your hands, mulling the question over in your head, not really sure how to answer her.
>You're actually doing pretty okay, all things considered. Helping people is your job, and while you don't enjoy killing the pirates, they're dangerous and are a threat to society.

Thinking over how things have gone since this has all started, not just the pirate raid but even going back to since you were abducted, you realize that, while you're not thrilled at the fact that you've racked up the death count that you have, you're actually doing pretty alright. In fact you might even be better than you were on Earth, where you were just going through the motions, ever when you followed your parent's not so gentle pushing towards becoming a doctor it was just because you didn't have any better ideas. You're not going to pretend that things are great, after all you're in the middle of a pirate raid, but for the first time since you can remember you feel like you're alive...and maybe you can actually make a difference here.

"Jack...?" You're ripped from your thoughts as Angelicia sets a gentle hand on your shoulder, "Are you okay? You look like you're a hundred miles away." She says, her voice filled with concern at your apparent inattentiveness.

A small, admittedly tired, smile crosses your face as you nod, "Yeah, I'm good. Great actually, considering the situation." You reply, unsurprised to see her raise a questioning eyebrow.

"You mean you're alright with all of this? All the killing and everything?" She asks carefully, eying you suspiciously in what's obviously an attempt to catch you lying.

"Not really." You reply simply, shaking your head.

A shocked look crosses her face at your admission, "I...didn't expect to hear that from you." She says her eyes wide, "I mean I'd guessed you might be a little desensitized to violence, but...well I guess it's just that you're a doctor."

>>
>>31791478
You sigh at that, not really surprised at her reaction, though you figure you should explain. "Look, I'm not saying that I LIKE killing these guys, because I don't, but I've always liked to think that I help people, Angelicia. Sometimes that means healing patients, but sometimes that can also mean executing dangerous enemies. These guys are running around killing innocent people for a paycheck, and if they'll do it once then they'll do it again. I'm not about to deny any of them surrender or anything, but if they're going to kill children for a little bit of money then I'm not going to feel one bit sorry for them when they end up on the wrong end of my or anybody else' gun."

As your words sink in to her you see her disapproval slowly morph into understanding and, you think, agreement. "I guess I can see where you're coming from there...maybe you're right. I mean, if the people who are supposed to be policing these fuckers can't control him, maybe what the galaxy needs is some people to pick up the slack and respond to threats like this with appropriate force." She says slowly, nodding her head as she gains confidence in it. "I mean, obviously you'd have to make sure that whoever was fighting back wasn't just as bad or didn't overstep their authority, but still..." She trails off, shaking her head before looking at her watch, "Ah, now's not the time to talk about this. Right now we just need to get everybody together and head out...do you want to put out the call for volunteers or should I? I mean, I know you haven't been here very long and you don't know any of these people, but you might get a better reception from your people if you do it yourself."

You nod in agreement as the two of you walk over towards the group gathering around the table you and the rest of the 'committee' used to put together your plan. "Yeah, I'll do it myself...it's only fair that they get to see the guy asking them to go into a small, enclosed space with him. Hopefully I don't look too shady to them."

The punk lets out a short snort, "I wouldn't worry about that. They're not going to be bothered by you too much...probably anyways. You are kind of creepy-looking after all." She replies, drawing a mock-hurt stare from you.

"But that's not what you said earlier!" You shoot back, receiving a raised eyebrow from your friend, apparently not having any clue what you're talking about. "We both agreed that I've got a rogueish charm, remember?"

She rolls her eyes and waves you off, "Ass..." She mutters, quickly continuing before you can make another comment, "I'm not going over this with you again right now. You can just stand over there with Freida and the other asshole."

Looking over towards where she directs you, your face falls as you see the scarfed girl quietly watching the two of you from her position next to Hans. You direct a pained look at her, "You're really going to compare me to him? What did I ever do to you?"

"Aside from being a general pain in the ass you mean?" You shrug, not really able to deny it, "Well, you're the one that stuck me with him through the assault, so you can spend some time with him too. Look, just go, Doc, I need to get this thing started if we're going to have time to avoid dying a horrible flaming death."

You start to open your mouth to argue before shaking your head, deciding that she makes a good point, there'll be plenty of time to annoy her later, if you're so inclined. "Fine, I'll go stand over there with the other unpopular kid...and Freida."

Angelicia nods shortly, before turning to make her way towards the table, "Thank you. The entire ship appreciates your noble sacrifice." She says, snatching the map from your belt as she walks by. "I'll give this back once I'm done with it."

While you're tempted to say something else, you realize that not only are you holding up the meeting, but people are starting to stare at you now too...well, more than they have been since you came in anyways. Rather, you merely nod and make your way over to stand next to Freida, putting her between you and Hans. "Are you ready for the mission?"

You glance at the Israeli girl, somewhat surprised at the question, before nodding. "Yeah...as ready as I'm going to be anyways. I've never lead anybody like this before...I'll be honest I'm glad that you're going with me." You reply quietly receiving an understanding smile in response.

"Thank you. I think you will do fine, even if I wasn't with you, but if you need any assistance while we are there, I will be happy to provide it." She says simply, before turning to listen as Angelicia starts laying out the plan for the group that had gathered for the assault.

The mechanic does her best to explain the plan your group came up with both as quickly and as simply as she can, making sure to hit the major points of it, including the flanking team, before pausing with a sigh. "Look, all of you know that this is going to be dangerous. We're going up against a larger, better armed, group in an area of the ship that they control almost entirely. You're all here as volunteers for the same reason as I am, you know that whatever these assholes have planned it's not going to end well for any of us if they win. That said, we're going to have to ask some of you to risk yourselves more than you already are."

Several of the people in the crowd shift uncomfortably at her words, though before any of them can ask what she means she continues, "I'd tell you more, but the leader of the flanking team asked to do this part himself." She says, motioning you forward. You suddenly feel incredibly small as you step up next to her, "This is Doctor Jack Yarick. He's volunteered himself to lead the flanking team that is going to be heading into the vents. He'll tell you what you need to know."

With that Angelicia steps back to take your place next to Freida. You can see a light sheen of sweat across her forehead and, as you lick your lips while staring out at the group over the table, you can feel some forming on your brow as well. Still, you're not up here to get sudden onset stage fright, you're here to ask for volunteers. You initially consider going for the emotional, and glorifying route, painting whoever joins you as a hero who's braving threats unknown for the betterment of everyone on the ship. If you do that though, you're afraid that you might attract a couple of the young kids in the crowd that are obviously eager to prove themselves. On the other hand, you could just give them the facts. You have no clue what you're running into in there, but you do know that if a team doesn't join you to help you flank the enemy then there's a very good chance that everybody on this ship is going to die.
>Appeal to the volunteer's emotions, you NEED people to join you, even if they are just kids with delusions of grandeur.
>Just tell them the facts...you need people who are aware of the threat but are willing to risk themselves anyways. Hopefully this will dissuade anybody who thinks about doing it just for glory.

I just realized something.

We don't know these people are for sure pirates.

The only information we have about the galaxy got to us through the K'tulu, the very beings who kidnapped us and look at us like lab rats. These pirates may be working to free us from their rule and return us to our home proper, or maybe just keep us from being shipped to another laboratory. We only have the K'Tulu's word about what's going on. The pirates are obviously not part of their plan...or maybe they are. Plots within plots, m80s

It's a nice notion, but you know how minorities are repressed worldwide because they don't have a say in their governments but corporations do?

Yeah, the K'tulu have a say in the galactic senate and we don't.
>>

You're forgetting, however, the unarmed people you saw them slaughter, or try to kill at any rate. While I congratulate you guys for thinking outside the box, I assure you that in this case they are pirates. Pirates that were hired to do wet work, possibly to silence you and your kind for sure or to sabotage the K'tulu and justify a war, or for some unknown reason, but they are pirates none the less.

Also, writing to tell them the facts.

Or hired by the politicians from the race the K'tulu were at war with in an effort to show how little effort was being made. After all, if a ship full of these humans (which knowing politics would be an issue of GREAT controversy concerning K'tulu Luteran relations) were to suddenly disappear, or even several of them...well, that'd be grounds for the Galactic senate to unite against the K'tulu. At least it'd be a big step in that direction.

Looking out across the group you take in a deep, calming breath, before stepping forward to the map hovering above the table and highlighting the ducts that you'll be using to move through the ship. "You all heard what Angelicia had to say about my mission already. Like she told you, I'm the one leading this mission, with the help of Freida over there, and I'm asking for volunteers to join my team. I only need two of you...I'm not going to lie, what I'm asking you to do here is dangerous. We have no idea what we're going to run into in those vents, or if the pirates have even set up security in there at all. Like I said, we don't know. What we do know, however, is that this mission is essential to the success of the entire assault. If the flanking team doesn't make it to the bridge in time, and with enough people to make a difference when we do, then there's a very good chance that everybody on this ship is going to die." You say clearly, looking scanning the faces of everybody in the crowd as you do so.

"If you go with me then I can't promise that you're going to make it out of this mission alive, no matter how much I wish I could. What I CAN promise you, however is that, if you go with me, I will take a personal responsibility to do everything in my power that you make it back. Either way, I will be the fist to go into the vents, I'm not going to ask you to take any risks that I won't take myself. I also must ask that if you are thinking about doing this simply for a chance at glory then don't. I need people that have at least some kind of idea of what they are doing here or, at the very least, understand the risks you're about to take."

>>31794187

Honestly, this might be the only course of action available to us.

The aliens managed to attack and board our ship, meaning our current vessel has no space combat capabilities. Why did the aliens decide to not just shoot our vessel down, instead opting to initiate a self-destruct?

Probably they were not expecting much resistance and its likely to be cheaper this way.

Now what happens when the self-destruct fails?

They will likely abandon the boarding plan and attempt to shoot our vessel down.

We thus have two options, get away quickly or bring the fight to the aliens and considering that they caught us in the first place, I don't see very good chances on the former.
>>
>>31794367
>Why did the aliens decide to not just shoot our vessel down, instead opting to initiate a self-destruct?
We were in FTL when the boarding occurred, weren't we? Maybe combat is impossible in hyperspace, but boarding actions are?
>>

Eh, pirates probably *usually* board ships. Remember how ships are stupidly expensive in this setting? They're going to be worth a pretty penny...or make a nice addition to the fleet.

"If you're thinking that you're going to run into those vents and suddenly become a hero then you are deluding yourselves to the point of insanity. In my opinion, everybody who is standing here right now, willing to assault the bridge while everybody else is cowering in their rooms is already just as much of hero as anybody else who is taking part in this mission." You state strongly, your heart pounding as you continue looking out at the gathered group, you take another deep breath before finishing. "Now...with that said, is there anybody that's willing to go with me? Like I said we only need two people, I'd prefer anybody that has some kind of close-quarters combat training, but if that's not possible then I will accept whoever's willing."

With your piece said you step back, and wait as the group crowd starts to talk amongst themselves, quite a few of them clearly not overly enthused about the plan. After two minutes pass you still haven't gotten a volunteer, and it doesn't seem like anybody's about to step forward. You're starting to wonder if maybe you made a mistake by being so blunt with them when a group of four people step forward out of the crowd, lead by an older-looking man carrying what looks to be a light machine gun, "We're willing to go with you, Sir." The man tells you in a gruff voice, while the others in the group nod, though the younger ones seem a little hesitant.

You nod at the man gratefully, "Thank you, Sir. I appreciate you stepping forward." You reply before turning your eyes to look at the other three people with him, your heart falling slightly as you see that most of the others seem significantly less experienced than their apparent leader. Immediately you pick out a surprisingly familiar face, seeing the redhead girl that you rescued earlier in the day when you were trying to reach Tobias' room. You're not able to see any obvious weapons on her, aside from a pistol that she's holding rather shakily...it's obvious that she's not here as a glory hound, considering her nervousness, but you're not sure why she would volunteer for something like this.

The next person you see sets off alarm bells in your head, with the cocky grin that he displays as he looks at you, along with the suit he's wearing. It's clear that he's not bothered at all by what you said towards the end of your speech, you're not sure that he's a gloryhound, but he certainly looks like it. That said he does look like he's pretty confident with his pistol, and you notice that he's also got several strange devices clipped onto his belt...you're not sure what exactly those are.

Finally your eyes fall on the last person in the group, as far as you can see the only firearm he's carrying at all is yet another pistol, something that frustrates you to no end, though you also note that he's carrying a sword that looks a lot like a katana. While he looks confident he also, more importantly, looks somewhat competent. He doesn't have the same smug air about him that the young man in the suit does, instead he looks as if he knows what he's here to do and is willing to do it if he has to.

You let out a quiet sigh once you're done looking them over. You're pretty sure that just from looking at them you've got a decent read on exactly what's going on, aside from maybe the redhead, but if you'd like you could take them over to the side talk to them. Maybe ask if they're sure they want to do this? If you do that you could ask what their motives for joining you are, maybe get a more solid view of them, just to make sure. Of course if you already know who you want to take into the vents with you then you can send the others away.
>Take them off to the side to make double sure that they understand what they're about to volunteer for. If you do this is there anybody in particular that you want talk to amongst them?

You eye the group as you think your next words over carefully while Angelicia appears near your side. She looks somewhat disappointed to you as she looks at the group in front of you before leaning in close to your ear to whisper to you. "This is all that volunteered?" The mechanic asks quietly, a small frown crossing her face when you nod, though you don't respond further than that, as you've finally decided what you're going to do.

"Alright guys, why don't you step off to the side with me here." You tell them quietly, before looking to your friend, "I'm going to talk to them real quick, make double sure that you know exactly what they're getting themselves into."

She nods in response, "Redhead?" She mouths silently, seeming unsurprised when you give your own nod at her question.

With that done you turn on your heel and make your way over to the bulkhead away from the main group that your volunteers have gathered near. "First off, like I said before, I appreciate all of you volunteering. It means a lot...I meant what I said before, about everybody involved with this plan already being a hero, but it took a lot of bravery for you guys to step up like this, so thanks."

The entire group nods, most of them solemnly, though the one with the suit has an enthusiastic grin on his face, "Yeah, no problem, Doc." He says, a Jersey accent prominent in his voice.

You have to stop yourself from narrowing your eyes at the man's casual tone before continuing. "I asked you guys to come on over here just to make certain that you're all positive that you want to do this. I wasn't just trying to sound dramatic up there when I said that we don't know what's in there, because we really don't. I don't know if there's going to be any cover or how many enemies we might run into in there." You tell them seriously, "I promise that I'm not going to look down on you if you back out now, but this is going to be your last chance. Once we get moving then the chance to speak up is over."

"Do you guys understand me?"

The group nods, most of them strongly, while the girl does so hesitantly. You're about to continue when suddenly the man that lead the volunteers to you in the first place speaks up, "Son, I appreciate what you're trying to do here, making sure that you know that we might be coming back, but it's not necessary. Or at least not for me, anyways. You're doing something important here, and the way I see it is that if you don't get it done as fast as possible then none of us are going to make it out of this alive anyways."

You blink a little in surprise at the old man's impromptu speech, though you quickly recover from it as the rest of the group agrees with him, "I'm with, Pops on this one." The suited man speaks out, drawing a somewhat annoyed glance from the old man, but getting his point across all the same.

A sigh escapes you but you nod in acceptance. "Alright then...as long as you all know what you're getting into then I guess I can't afford to turn you away." You admit, "Well, if you're going to come along then I might as well know your names..."

The old man chuckles a little at your rather nonplussed tone, "It's alright, Son, I'm sure you'll get used to it if you're going to keep doing this kind of thing." He says easily as he steps forward to offer his hand, which you quickly take up in a shake, "The name's Thomas Rathbun, Son." He says warmly before motioning to the weapon in his hands, "And this here's Molly, picked her up off one of those alien bastard's body, doesn't seem like she's just as good killing them as us, so far." He finishes with a grin, before stepping back and releasing your hand, not even giving you a chance to respond before wandering off to introduce himself to Freida.

You blink at his sudden introduction, "Err, nice to meet you...Johnny. My name's Ja-"

He suddenly cries out, yanking his hand from yours, making you realize that you must have been squeezing too hard, somehow you can't bring yourself to feel any sympathy for him though.

"No...I don't think she does." You reply shortly, eying him distastefully before shaking your head, "Sorry about your hand, Johnny." You tell him insincerely as you move around him to talk to the man he cut in front of, leaving him staring wide-eyed at your back.

By the time you get to the man with the sword you've managed to wipe your annoyance at Johnny off your face, though from the amused smirk he's directing towards your suited team-member it appears that he's not overly fond of the guy either. "Hey, sorry about that. I'm sure you heard before, but my name's Jack." You tell him, offering your hand to him, which he quickly takes in a strong handshake.

"No problem, man, I understand how it is. Trust me, I've been dealing with that ass for the last three days." He replies, a knowing smile on his face, "The name's Jaye, by the way. Well technically Julius Reece, but I'll be damned if that's how I'm gonna introduce myself to anybody."

An amused grin spreads across your own face, nodding in understanding, "Yeah, I get it. Technically my name's Johnathon, but I didn't really care for that even before I stood the risk of being mixed up with some hot-shot wannabe from Brooklyn." You say as you release his hand, your gaze traveling over his shoulder to the redhead who you're noticing is looking at you with more than a little nervousness, "Hey, it was nice to meet you, Jaye. If you'd like you can go ahead and introduce yourself to Freida. I think I'm going to be a minute..."

Reece raises an eyebrow at you, before following your gaze, an understanding look crossing his face, "Ah...I see. Look, man, I know you're the leader here and all that, but I honestly don't know what she's doing here. I was talking to her earlier, and it's obvious she doesn't want to do this, but she's here anyways." He says quietly, trailing off as he sees a knowing look on your face.

"Yeah, I kind of figured. I'm pretty sure I know why she's here..." You reply, patting him on the shoulder and sending him on his way towards your co-commander, before slowly making your way to girl who's shifting rather uncomfortably as you step up to her and offer your hand to her. "Hey there, nice to see you made it out okay." You say gently as she accepts your hand.

>>
You realize just how unprepared for this she is as she grips your hand weakly and introduces herself, forcing you to strain your ears to hear her, "Hi..."

You remain silent for a few moments, waiting for her to continue before realizing that she's looking at you desperately, apparently waiting for you to pick up for her. "Um...hey. My name's Jack, what's yours?" You ask, doing your best not to sound overly annoyed, but still trying to get her to actually tell you her name at least.

"Euh, my name is Abigail Legodiana." She mutters quietly, still not quite meeting your eye, before continuing, "I...wanted to zank you for what you done earlier."

A small smile crosses your face as you shrug, "It's no problem, Abigail." You reply simply, before sighing and looking at her seriously. "Look...please don't take this the wrong way, but are you sure you want to do this? I know I asked already, and you stuck around, but if you're just doing this because you think that you owe me something then please, don't."

Abigail's face flashes with a small amount of surprise at your comment, before turning more towards indignation. "What?! Why would you zink zat?! Are you saying zat I am not good enough for you?!" She asks, her voice rising heatedly at your question, making your eyes widen in surprise as she practically starts spitting fire at you. "I am not just a leetle girl zat can not defend myself, Doctor! I can use a peestol just as well as any of zose men, better zan zee one wiz ze stupid suit, even!"

You stare her wide-eyed and speechless for a moment before slowly managing to find your voice, though you stutter a little as you do so, "I-I see..." You reply before looking her up and down, more confident that she's able to help herself now that she's finally broken out of her nervousness, though you're still unsure that you want to bring her. "Do you at least have a shield generator on you? I mean you're not wearing armor or anything..."

Girl is DETERMINED. Why not bring her?
>>
She nods vehemently, "Of course! Ze aliens, zey put some zings in me zat protect me. Zee only reason I needed your help earlier was zat I deedn't have a weapon and zose pirates had killed my friend! I was'nt zinking straight!" She argues, clearly trying to convince you to take her with you. Of course it's clear that she's only here because you helped her earlier...if she got hurt because you didn't have the heart to tell her no, you know that you'd regret it. So what are you going to tell her?
>Fine, if she's so set on going then you're not going to stop her. Besides, now that she's shown you that she's not just a scared girl with a gun she doesn't know how to use she might be useful.
>No. You're not going to be responsible for taking her into the vent if she's not able to handle herself. You appreciate what she's trying to do but you don't want her death on your conscience.
>>
>>31797108

Well if she has no armor...

Otherwise, I think we should try to persuade her off once more but if she insists.

Fine but she takes up the rear most slot.

Alright, you're good. Still, even if you have an implanted shield, I want you to be careful. Bullets work best on flesh, and once your shield's gone...

Well, yeah, you know better then me.

Abigail stares you down steadily as you look her up and down one more time before letting out a sigh, "Fine...if you're really so determined to go then I'm not going to stop you." You say tiredly, feeling as if another set of weights is being set firmly on your shoulders as a triumphant smile spread across her face, "But if you're going then you're going to take up the rear. Even Johnny's got at least some armor on him under that suit, but you don't have anything other than your shields. I want you to stay low and keep your head down. I swear that if you make me dig a bullet out of your chest I'm going to do it where everybody can see me." You tell her strongly, though it appears your threat does little to dampen her enthusiasm.

"Of course, Doctor, I will follow your orders to zee letter!" She replies quickly, surprising you as she rushes forward and grabs you into a tight hug that lasts longer than you're really comfortable with before releasing you and starting to move towards the rest of your group of volunteers. "Zank you for trusting me."

"Uh...sure thing." You mutter awkwardly as you watch her practically prance over and start introducing herself to Freida, apparently over her shyness now that you've broken her out of it.

"So what was that all about?" A voice asks from behind you, making you jump before turning around to see Angelicia standing there with her arms crossed an a slightly amused smirk on her face, though the look in her eyes still demand an answer from you.

You blink in surprise at her sudden appearance before finally shaking your head tiredly, "To be honest, I have no clue, other than maybe she actually likes the idea of heading into almost certain danger. In which case, I guess I just made her day."

"You know, I was actually talking about the little shouting match you manged to goad her into..."The mechanic replies, raising an eyebrow at your answer before shaking her head, though it appears she's satisfied. "Well, I guess you worked it out, whatever it was. I swear, you attract the weirdest people..." She mutters disbelievingly, apparently missing the fact that she would easily be among the weirdest you've met since leaving the K'tulu's custody...possibly barring Tobias, of course.

You shrug at her reply and offer her a teasing grin, "Well you'd be the expert there, wouldn't you? I mean you're the one that introduced me to most of them...so technically wouldn't that mean that you're the real weirdness magnet?"

"How do you figure? The only weird person you met while you were with me was Tobias, and that was just because you wanted to meet Lizzie!" She shoots back, obviously missing the point, "Besides, since then you've manage to run into and save some strange person you don't know, then do the same thing with an Israeli ex-soldier, and THEN, on top of all that, you go and attract that group of oddballs."

You stare at her speechlessly as she lays it out for you, finding yourself unable to argue against her points. "Oh god...I AM the weirdness magnet, aren't I?" You ask her, adopting a horrified look.

The mechanic lets out a hysterical laugh, patting out on the shoulder in mock-sympathy, "There, there. It'll be alright...really it's better that you accept that you're cursed now than finding out about it later, isn't it?"
>>
You fix her with a glare at that. Well now that she's gone that far you might as well mention the fact that if you're a weirdness magnet then she should be more concerned about the fact that she was the first human you met after being freed from captivity. On the other hand time is ticking and both of you have jobs to do, should you really bother to waste your time with someone who's so obviously intent on ignoring the facts?
>Continue teasing her, before breaking off and getting back to what you're supposed to be doing.
>Don't bother trying to explain the intricacies of how weirdness magnet's luck work, it's not worth wasting your time on somebody so obviously in denial.

Also I figure I'll ask you guys now if you're still up for trying to get to the bridge. I'm willing to at least get us to the vents if you want, but after that I'll probably call it a night, seeing as how you'd still have to traverse the ducts to get to the bridge.

>Continue teasing her, before breaking off and getting back to what you're supposed to be doing.

I kinda wanted to get to the whole taking over the ship bit tonite.

Well, I'd be willing to try if enough people want to stick around. That said I'm not going to be able to make any promises.

>>Continue teasing her, before breaking off and getting back to what you're supposed to be doing.

Lets go as far as you reasonably can.

Don't get too tired, though.
>>
>>31797836
Im being optimistic here. Honestly i except us to get through vent combat tonite, possibly to be left off with a "DRAMATIC CLIFFHANGER!" or such the like.
>>
Alrighty, writing to inform that our friend that she isn't exactly normal either.

>>31797899
Fair enough. I'll do my best to get us there tonight then. We haven't gotten nearly as far as I'd planned to tonight, largely because of all that dialogue up there.
>>
>>31797821
am in agreement I just hope op can keep it up use
>>
"You know, Angelica," You start, your voice taking on a somewhat solemn tone as you prepare to break the news to her, "You're not exactly what most people would call normal either."

You're hardly surprised when your friend puts on a mask of confused hurt, "What the hell's that supposed to mean?" She asks quietly, as if you'd just kicked her dog, though as you let out a pained sigh you see her fighting not to grin.

"Look, I'm your friend, and as your friend I think it's my duty to be honest with you." You say, waiting for her to nod before continuing, "Among the two of us here, which one of us is an ex-military punk mechanic with superpowers?"

"...I am..." She sighs reluctantly.

"Right. So which one of us is a medically licensed doctor who just so happens to be a decent shot and willing to spend his free time with said punk mechanic?"

"You are..." She mutters childishly.

"That's right again. So, as said Doctor, my official diagnosis is that..." You pause dramatically, as if you're about to deliver Earth-shattering news to her, "You're weird."

There's a heavy silence that seems to last forever as your friend stares at you in disbelief before finally letting out a somewhat anticlimactic snort of laughter. "I do hope you know that was REALLY lame." She tells you, a mocking smirk on her face.

You sigh and nod your head, "Yeah, I know...it's not my best work. At least it's not the worst thing I've said today though." You reply, before shaking your head at her questioning gaze, "I'd rather not talk about it right now, besides in case you've forgotten 'Princess' we've got a bridge to assault."
(1/2 or 3)
>>
She narrows her eyes you for using Hans' label for her, turning back towards the large group that's finally looking like it's ready to storm the bridge, or at least divert enough attention away from it that you and your own team can get in there safely. "Just so you know, I'm not talking to you anymore!" She huffs at you over her shoulder bringing a smirk to your face as you turn to make your way towards the flanking team.

"Alright guys, we're getting ready to move out. Are you all-" You pause as you notice Thomas, Jaye, and Abigail looking at you with something akin to amazement while Johnny just stares at you like he'd just swallowed a lemon. "What?"

Abigail blinks in surprise as she realize that she's staring at you before looking away with a small flush, "Oh, uh...nuzzing, eet's nuzzing." She mutters, quietly, seeming to retreat slightly back into her shell.

You raise an eyebrow at the redhead's behavior before looking to the others, "Look, do you guys have anything you want to say? Because if you do, now's the time to say it."

Thomas grins at your confusion and shakes his head, "Oh, nothing really, like she said. It's just that miss Levy here was just telling us about how you saved her life too, in addition to your rescue of little miss Abbi here." He says chuckling as you shift somewhat uncomfortably, "It sounds like you're a regular hero, Son."
>>
You let out a somewhat annoyed sigh at the praise as you shake your head, much to the old man and Reece's amusement. You're tempted to just tell him that you can hardly be counted as a hero just for doing this that any decent person should do, but then again you really don't have the time or desire to argue the point with him if he, or any of them really, decide to push the point.
>Try to explain to them that you're not a hero and that you aren't wanting any of them to start trying to pull off any heroics of their own to prove themselves or something stupid like that.
>Just accept the compliment for what it is. You may not think you're a hero but you're not going to bother arguing with him right now. Maybe you'll correct him some other time.

Also I'm sorry guys but I'm going to have to call it quits after this. I'll write it out to a hopefully decent end point where we start to move out, but I just got hit with exhaustion. Sorry that I didn't really get us as far as I'd hoped to tonight, but I'll probably have another thread up tomorrow and we're sure to get through the bridge and at least have planet-fall by the end of the next session.

Nah, this is pretty decent length, Considering youve been going daily so far.

Despite the nearly overwhelming desire to correct the man you just turn to level a stare at Freida that tells her you're definitely going to want to talk to her about this later before waving your hand at them to follow you. "Alright, guys, come on. We've got to get ready to leave with the rest of the group. We're not breaking off until we get to our access point." You tell them as you turn to join Angelicia at the head of the group. You hear Thomas chuckle to himself at your silently admitting defeat as they follow you.

You're only about half-way to your friend when you hear Freida come up beside you, "You're not going to convince me to take back what I told them, Jack." She tells you quietly while offering you an unrepentant smile as you direct a clearly unhappy look at her.

"Why? Now you've went and got them all thinking I'm some kind of hero when I'm not, Freida." You mutter heatedly, only to receive that same infuriating smile again.

"Aren't you, though? Not only did you save both myself and Abigail, but you went to help my friend when it would have been easier to just leave him there." You blink in surprise and confusion at her bringing up your latest patient. "I sent another one of my friends to find him after I left. They told me that somebody had put an actual medical-grade tourniquet on him and treated him for shock. Unfortunately it looks like Jacob is going to lose his leg, but if you hadn't kept your promise then he wouldn't even be alive to worry about that right now." She says, answering your unasked question, "Do not be so quick to dismiss praise when it is warranted, Doctor."

With that said your co-commander offers you one last smile before dropping back with the rest of your team while you continue ahead with Angelicia as she leads the ship's defenders from the common area. Seeing the somewhat bemused look on your face she looks at you with concern, "Is something wrong, Doc?"

You look at her and shrug, offering her a resigned smile, "Not really, aside from the fact that Freida has managed to convince most of my team that I'm some kind of hero." You answer, before shaking the frustrated thoughts from your head, "Whatever, now's not the time for me to argue with her about it. We've got more important things to worry about right now."

Looking at your friend you can tell that she's debating on whether she should say something to you about it or not, but it seems that she ultimately decides against it as she finally simply offers you a shrug, "If you say so, Doc. You're the one that chose her as your co-commander." She replies, a small smirk on her face at your annoyed look.

While you consider replying you decide you'd rather keep your dignity this time and just keep your mouth shut, drawing a triumphant laugh from the punk. Even as amused as you are with your friend's conversation, however, you can't help but consider the fact that in just a few minutes you'll be breaking off from this group to lead your own team into an entirely unknown situation that may very well end up with none of you making it back in one piece. On the other hand though, the fact that it's a complete unknown could work in your favor as well...after all for all you know the pirates may not expect you to to even try to go through them, if they even know about them at all. You just really hope that there aren't any giant spiders in there or something stupid like that...you're not sure if you could handle dealing with space pirates and giant arachnids all in one day.

End of Episode 6.
