You are John James Green, mutant vagrant.

You expected a great deal many things from the Blonde Phantom Detective Agency, but the situation in which you find yourself was not one of them. You sit in the middle of an airy, open room, gradually sinking into the overstuffed folds of the couch beneath you, flanked on your right by a silently irate teenager currently tending to a coffee machine, and on your left by a man who looks very much like the cover to an erotic novel. And then there’s the mask people.

The Blonde Phantom sits opposite you, explaining the exact nature of her enterprise. She uses a lot of very flowery language, but mostly what you’re getting is that the agency tends to tackle those cases the police find too difficult, too macabre, or too plain weird to properly investigate. You nod slowly, occasionally eying Ricochet – that’d be the guy in the form-fitting spandex and the leather jacket sitting beside the Phantom – and his mask.

Can he see out of that thing? It really doesn’t look like he can. At all.

“…And we’re expanding our operations at an impressive pace!” The woman’s voice momentarily puffs out with pride. “You’ve met Sophia, of course, but we also have Spitfire currently in our employ, though she’s presently working on a personal affair…”

You have absolutely no idea who that is. Still, you nod along.

Gertrude, with all the grace of a roiling adolescent stormcloud, places a bunch of cups full of coffee down onto the table in front of you. You mutter something that probably sounds a little like “thanks”.

“…Now, there are a few questions I’d like you to answer.” Oh. This sounds important. You pull your brain together. “First, however, I’d like to get any questions you might have out of the way.”

If JJ remembers Professor X, then when he next seed Xavier (TV, newspaper, etc., will he recognize him?

Since JJ's mother made him learn piano, did she try various other instruments and/or singing?

Is Creeper a cannibal?

Any ideas for what JJ's favorite movies, music, books, tv shows, etc. are?

What version of Harry Osborn are you using?

"All the world will be your enemy, Prince of a Thousand enemies. And when they catch you, they will kill you. But first they must catch you; hider, listener, runner, Prince with the swift warning. Be cunning, and full of tricks, and your people will never be destroyed."

Also
Crusty, can we have duplication-ish ability for fluff reasons? Does not have to be effective, but it would be funny if we could for example appear to split wile using some ability (heat mirage, or electrical distortion) or something like that.
Or make us randomly make illusions of invisible JJ. We should have some sort of failed power/comedy relief thingy.

>[X] “What kind of ‘weird cases’ do you deal with?”
>[X] “Do you deal with more mundane stuff as well?”
>[X] “What would I be getting paid?”

“Okay…” Where to begin? You take a rather unwilling (you didn’t really want any, you were just too polite to say no) sip of your coffee, more to punctuate your thoughts that anything else, and begin with perhaps the most important issue: “When you say you deal with weird cases, what exactly do you mean?”

“A fair question.” Says the Phantom, nodding almost knowingly, as if acknowledging some accusation or legitimizing something hidden in your question. “Unsolved disappearances, crimes where some supernormal aspects is clearly at play, the theft of very particular objects… that sort of thing. We keep it local, generally, but we’ve been approached by government agencies before.”

That sounds sort of impressive. And maybe a little ominous.

“And what about, um…” You pick through your thoughts for the most appropriate term. “…mundane stuff?”

“We dabble.” She replies, smiling broadly. “Occasionally a ‘mundane’ case will present some opportunity to do some lasting good. In fact, one of our most recent contracts would fall into that category.”

Lasting good? Sounds almost like this is more superheroes-noir than an actual detective agency.

“Uh, lastly… where exactly… I mean, what, what kind of role would I…” You pause. You know exactly what you want to say, but you’re not quite sure how to shape it.
>>
>(2/2)

“Are you trying to ask how you’d be paid?” Interjects the Phantom, a twinkle in her eyes.

You nod a little sheepishly.

“Well, we wouldn’t be able to employ you immediately – not as a full-time detective, anyhow.” You kinda guessed as much. You don’t have an address, after all, and all personal information regarding you has probably listed you as either ‘deceased’ or ‘missing’ for some time. “I’m willing to offer the same deal I gave Sophia, however. You’d work for us on a case-by-case basis and receive a percentage of our fee roughly equivalent to your role in the case’s resolution.”

So, like… it all depends on how good at this you turn out to be? That could be a problem. You’re not really good at… anything, really.

“If that’s all, I’d like to ask you a few things now.” You pull yourself out of your internal panic and refocus your attention. “Firstly, Sophia has told us that you’re capable of invisibility. Obviously, that’s immensely useful to us. However… I’d rather not employ anyone without knowing exactly what they can do. Would you be willing to provide that information?”

>[ ] List all your powers.

They work in selling information. Don't trust a detective. We must hide our power level, otherwise they might sell us out/have stuff tortured out of them. Only stuff that will have direct benefit, and underplay it a bit. We don't want our skill set to be widely known.

We can reveal the abilities, if they would be useful, and if they ask why you didn't tell them tell that you only listed the ones you taught were useful for the yob. You just have too many to list them all in single sitting.

That said we should not be needing other abilities. Senses+strength should be enough to get hired. Invisibility/wall climb is just cherry on top.

>>
>[X] List some of your powers.

You’re a little jittery about this whole total exposure thing. You’ve got enemies, and they’re not going to be sitting around stewing in their hate while you chat it up with these good folks. They’re going to be looking for every and any scrap of you they can find, anything they can sink their teeth into. And, hell, what if these guys just turn around and sell your capabilities out to the highest bidder? You don’t know these people – what you do know is that two of them wear masks, and the other smells like all the weirdest things you can do in bed.

Oh, and then there’s the chubby teenager, too. You kinda trust her, if only because she’s a chubby teenager and chubby teenagers are not threatening in the least.

You rattle of a quick list of the first powers to come to mind – your invisibility, your senses, your pointy bits, your baffling retard strength, your ability to Spider-Man your way up walls…

Eventually the guy sprawled beside you on the couch interrupts you with a long, low whistle.

“Damn, homme, you sure that all you?”

God, his accent is thick. Like a warm soup.

“Uh, yeah…” You swallow nervously. “I guess I have a pretty weird thing going on in that department…”

The Blonde Phantom, however, looks elated.

“No, no, not at all!” She claps her hands together, a half-moon smile hovering under her mask. “What Remy was saying, I believe, is that someone of such varied talents would mostly certainly be welcome to work with the Agency…”

“So…” So, apparently, these people are going to pay you to do possibly dangerous things, right? That would sound awful, except your life is already a progressively more violent succession of Dangerous Things, so really, how could this possibly go wrong? “…how would I, um, start?”

“Eeeexcellent.” Says the Phantom, her voice and general demeanour momentarily channeling Emperor Palpatine. “Well, we’d assign you a case that makes use of your talents. As it happens, I believe we have a number of such jobs lined up, just waiting for a dashing young man with the ability to turn invisible to come along and get them out of my hair.”

Wait, what?

>[X] Inquire about the disappearance.

Clearing your throat, you ask about that last case she mention, the one about a young girl disappearing. God, you hope it has absolutely nothing to do with anything that could be construed as a supernatural presence of any kind… There better not be any orphanages involved, either.

“Oh?” Taking a small, dignified sip of her drink, the Phantom leans over the arm of her couch, fingers searching along a heap of folders and assorted papers stacked beside it. Eventually she pulls one out from near the top, flipping it open on her lap. “It’s a puzzling case. Quite the standard ‘locked room’ mystery, actually. The case was forwarded to us by one of my friends in the New York Police Department – the police have apparently put it on the backburner, what with this whole ‘gang war’ business eating through their time…”

You cringe a little. You don’t think anybody noticed until you see the last traces of a small, curious smile fading from Remy’s face.

Ffffffff–

“The disappeared minor in question is a Tildie Soames, ten years old, daughter to Martha and Donald Soames…” She reads on a little, before slowly closing the folder. “She vanished almost a week ago, apparently out of her room, which has thus far refused to yield any evidence of breaking and entering.”

True.
Though regardless of how well we know her or if she's been nice, we should apologize for just up and disappearing when we should have been working and IIRC we were working there for barely any time at all.

You're saying that like apology takes a long time.
With a single phonecall you could apologize for not showing up to work, thank for giving Laura a job and to explain that you don't expect a second chance, but if she's willing to give one, he's ready to take it.

“Uh, what about… the Astrovik thing?”

This time its Ricochet’s turn to speak up. He lurches forward on his seat and stares straight at you from behind that creepy mask of his.

“Dude, what? You haven’t heard?” He grabs a newspaper up from the desk and tosses it over to you. You glance down at the headline.

UNCOMFORTABLE QUESTIONS
The Case of Vance Astrovik Continues To Haunt The Avengers…

“An… acquaintance of mine contacted me about it.” Explains the Phantom, the totality of her expression hidden behind her cup. You read on.

Apparently this Astrovik guy was an Avenger, but a recent medical check after he was injured in the field revealed that he was a mutant – unregistered, too. Now the main body of SHIELD has demanded that he be ejected from the Avengers and placed in custody, which the Avengers couldn’t really comply with, seeing as the guy bolted before anyone could clap a pair of cuffs on him. Now Captain America is facing allegations that he knew about Astrovik’s genetic status and was keeping it quiet, and Vance himself is considered a fugitive from the law, most likely thought to be hiding out somewhere in New York…

Huh.

"I ain't havin' anythin' to do with that one..." Notes Remy, watching you out the corner of his eyes.

Well, you’re not entirely sure what The Blonde Phantom’s interest in the matter of Vance Astrovik is, but you know you’re not selling another mutant down the river. You agree with the Cajun – you’re not having anything to do with that particular case.

“I think I could help with the, uh, the Soames thing. Case.”

The Phantom nods, and sets aside her cup.

“I was thinking the same, actually. Your senses might be able to uncover something the police couldn’t.” She flips the casefile back open, holding out her free hand. Gertrude sighs and hands her a pen, along with a sheet of paper from the printer on the other side of the room. “I’m copying down the details relevant to this particular case. Consider this a test of your mettle – perform well enough here, and I’ll put you on the Kamar matter. Your talents would be invaluable there.”

After a moment of scribbling, she hands over the sheet of paper, which is now covered with everything from addresses to phone numbers to dates of birth.

“Good luck, dude.” Offers Ricochet. Remy just nods.

Stowing the paper away in your coat, you thank the Phantom – you call her Miss Phantom, and she tells you that just ‘Phantom’ is fine – for meeting you and make your way out, heading down the long flights of stairs out into the cold.

It's always just JJ and Laura. Getting the others used to fighting is a good idea. I'd say Noriko because she has a ranged attack but if things go down hill she can't run as fast as JJ or Laura. >[X] Head home.
>[X] Warn [YXM] about Vance.
>[X] Seek out the vampire.

You head home, turning over the matter of Astrovik and his fugitive status in your brain. On the one hand, he’s a pretty massive problem. On the other, it’s also – it’s also kinda cool. An Avenger. A superhero. Someone who has actually spoken to Captain America, not just, like, as a fan or whatever, but as a co-worker. Apparently his superhero name was ‘Justice’, which is kinda lame and honestly doesn’t ring any bells, but still…

It takes you roughly an hour to get back. As you approach the yawning mouth of the station, you notice a pair of figures struggling in the snow nearby. They come into definition as you draw closer, and you realize that the one presently being pushed down into the freezing tarmac is Lucas. Laura appears to have locked one of his arms behind his back, her knee grinding his neck into the dirt.

“Ow ow ow holy fuck god…”

“In a combat situation, you must be able to activate your abilities under extreme duress.” Notes Laura, her tone calm and even. She’s not even out of breath. “With your mutant abilities, you should be able to”–

She pauses, sniffing at the air, and looks up at you. Seizing the opportunity, Lucas squirms out from under her, rolling over onto his back and nursing his wrist.

“Jesus Christ!” He hisses it out through clenched teeth. “Do you have any idea how bad that hurts?”

She stares blankly at him.

“Yes.”

You guess Lucas wanted to get started with that training stuff as quickly as possible…

I'm very confused about these options. We don't actually know anything about Vance. Nothing more than anyone else.

Tell Lucas and Laura about JJ's meeting with the Detective agency. Since they're right there. Lucas will tell the others while you ask Gabby if she want's to come with us and Laura for Vampire hunting.

because we're a crack bitch and he/she/it might be faster/stronger/better looking and or have better senses

Because you need both.

Track down vampire scent so you know the area.

Go invisible. Giving the illusion of the bait being alone.

Then you can both hunt down the rogue vampire and have a chance of drawing them into the open.

Yes.

No, people are jumping on the Laura bandwagon because she's a skilled and experienced tracker that has more combat and general weird under her belt than the rest of the group combined.

So far there are votes for Laura, Kevin, and Gabby.

I'm OK with bringing them all. Some people are against Gabby. But even without teleportation she is the fastest member of the group. She might not be ready (psychologically) to start throwing punches. But it's not like the vampire is going to be able to catch her.
>>
>>31807335

Slipping, Mugga.
>>
>>31808616
I think all three, realistically, would work. Gabby can be a spotter and can travel and direct us, Kevin is there to get some experience and if they mutant/vampire/whatever is hostile, and Laura because tracking and combat.
>>

Kevin only hurts people when he comes in direct contact with them. He wears synthetic fiber cloths (so he doesn't melt them).

Can Gabby grab Kevin's sleeve and teleport with him? She wouldn't be hurt since she wouldn't actually be touching his skin.

Unless the vampire is somehow immune to his corrosion ability's, or can drain at a short distance, say a few millimeters away, allowing it to drain through cloths.

Not to mention if someone punches him through his cloths. They cant grapple with him, but they can still take him down rather easily.
>>
>[X] Tell the YXM about Vance yourself.
>[X] Hunt vampires with [Kevin and Laura].

“Enjoying yourself?” You grin down at Lucas. He groans.

“I’d flip you the bird, but my wrist feels like it’s about to fall off…”

Man, you just can’t help but laugh. Still, there are serious things to attend to today…

“Well, mind if I cut in quickly?” You glance over at Laura. “There’s something I need to discuss with the Kid X-Men. And I think it’s about time we tracked down that vampire guy…”

“It is unlikely to be a vampire.” Asserts Laura, as she helps Lucas up.

Yeah. Well. She said there weren’t no such thing as ghosts. And then you ran into a demon.

You pop downstairs momentarily, asking Kevin if he’s up for a little outing. He’s probably too nice to punch anyone, but he’s got the ultimate defense mechanism against fangs, claws, and whatever other pointy bits your neighborhood Dracula may be using to leech the life from its victims. Plus, the YXM seem to kinda know him, and you intend on dropping by their little fortress on your way. He’s a little reluctant at first, but then Gabby mentions how awful it is that someone would prey on the homeless so viciously, and he can’t sign up for duty fast enough.

Gabby winks over his shoulder at you on your way out. Hah.

You make your way to the library-homebase of the Littlest X-Men under a pall of silence. You hate to admit it, but the whole vampire deal sets you on edge when you really think about it, and you’d guess it does the same for Kevin. As for Laura… well, it’s sometimes easy to forget that she’s even capable of fear, but she’s not the biggest advocate of casual conversation anyway.

As you approach the blasted-out library, you pick up that familiar, low growl on the wind – the same sound that was menacing your approach last time. For a moment you consider tracing it to its source.

>[X] Investigate.

Stopping in the middle of the snow-swept road, you hone in on the sound with your senses, breaking it down into a subtle pattern of undulating waves. Before you know it, it has you – or you have it, you guess. There’s next to no difference. It gets into your ears like a hook, wrenching your gaze across the road, toward the stretch of rubble running along the street you just crossed over from.

A stooped, gangly shape recedes behind the scorched frame of an old doorway, vanishing into the dark. You glance at Kevin, who simply shrugs.

“I dunno.”

You step forward, but the moment your boot is crunching down on snow, you find yourself startled by a shrill, bestial call. It flattens out over your surroundings, twisting and croaking, as if pulling itself together. Not a moment later, you realize that’s exactly what it’s doing – it all sort of flows back together into a human voice, recognizably female but heavily distorted, as if it’s fighting against itself, struggling to remain human.

“Don’t come any closer!” It commands, trailing off into a snarl.

Something shifts in the snow, moving quickly – almost too fast for your eyes to track it.

“You’re Victor’s friend…” It reverse-chokes it out, staggering through the syllables. You guess it’s referring to Kevin. “What do you want?”

I assume you mean
>AUTONOMIC SEQUENCING
>Requires: Level 3 Enhanced Agility, Level 3 Enhanced Senses
>Cost: 2
>JJ may activate a short term ‘recording mode’, allowing to repeat any action he observes within this duration down to the finest detail. This does not actually enhance his memory – he may execute the action, but he does not remember anything more than normal. Additionally, he can execute that action and that action alone. For example, he could perfectly copy a man’s signature after ‘storing’ that motion, but he could not write a new sentence in the same handwriting.

>ENHANCED MUSCLE MEMORY
>Requires: Level 4 Enhanced Agility, Level 4 Enhanced Senses, Autonomic Sequencing
>Cost: 3
>JJ’s rate of learning when it comes to physical action skyrockets. He does not immediately perfect an action after observing it, but his muscles retain certain reflexes far more efficiently and his ability to extrapolate how an action is performed in sequence with others (unlike Autonomic Sequencing, which simply stores and repeats one action) is heightened to superhuman levels.

No. We lack both the points and the agility.

Man, at the rate we're evolving, those after our hide are gonna be like 'he can pull what bullshit out his ass now? Fuck this, I'm done!"
>>
>>31809974
Sweet. Going to have to miss you Friday, take care, run well, stay sane (mostly sort of whatever).

Possibly.

We have 3 points, so technically we could get either both Contortion & Shadow Field or Contortion + Photosynthetic Biology + Bank (and shadow field/photosynth 2 next thread)
>>
>>31809996
If I saw photo was able to tie, I would have put in my own vote for contortion.

Shiiiiit. Nice catch, Anon.
I personally want photosynth, but I want the choice to fuck shit up. That right there....ugh.
>>
>>31810019
Hey, I like photosynth, I just don't like the Druid concept and really think Animal Affinity just doesn't make sense for JJ, period.

No we don't.
>>
>>31810045
If by 3 points you mean we just spent our only point, then yes.
>>
>>31810045
>We have 3 points
What the hell are you talking about? We had 2 at the end of the last thread and spent them on wings. We just spent the one we got in this thread meaning we're back to 0.
>>
>>31810077
I'm less Druid and more for the Green Thumb ability; growing our own food would save us a fuckton of money on the others
>>
>>31810019
I might be more inclined to vote for it if people wanted it on its own merits, rather than as a druid prerequisite.
As it is, I'm avoiding it specifically to stop people blowing points on animal affinity. Druid has its merits, but they're reasonably far down the list.
>>
>>31810108
I've been spending the last few days trying to save up money for rent so I don't get evicted, so I forgot about wings 2.
>>
>>31810156

Seconded.
>>
>>31810156
Where were you when we were voting on dragon breath? Oh, you were voting for it, nevermind on your consistency then.
>>
>>31810137
>save us a fuckton of money on the others
We aren't the one buying them food anymore.
And getting food/money/whatever was easy before we got captured and stopped getting money every day. It's still pretty easy to live right now and will be even simpler once JJ himself starts getting cash.

I voted to bank when the ranged powers came up. Didn't really want any of them at the time.

I don't blame you for being a little snippy about it, given some of the issues, but at least try to be accurate.
>>
>>31810190
>>31810156
It's higher levels will definitely be worth it for the general bonus to rolls it gives (along with the REMOTE possibility of level 5's supercharge).
>>31810205
That wasn't the main reason it was advocated. There are a ton of mutants in the Scar from the tanker and they are causing interest to be drawn to the Scar. The idea is food could be grown so they could stop attracting attention, possibly stopping/lessening Lizard Island.
>>
>>31810156
Generally it is a good power for us since JJ is malnourished, Crusty has stated that if we got enough food JJ could work out and improve on his already impressive ability's.

great for avoiding creeper, kimi, or whomever we piss off and for the new detective job.

>grow own food

Self-sufficiency is just a good thing to have (jobs can be lost) and spread goodwill to fellow scar muties is a good way to make friends

>>31810156
Agility is fine but I'm happy with where its at right now. Shadowfield is just lackluster imo.

you guys are entitled to your opinions and free to dislike whatever. Just don't tell me Druid route has nothing to offer.
>>
>>31810284
You want to create a centralized congregation point for a couple hundred individuals currently being hunted by the government, S.H.I.E.L.D., the city of New York and any anti-mutie vigilantes in the area?

I...don't think that's necessarily a good idea, especially since I haven't even mentioned Essex yet.

Notice how 'Bank' was not an option in that number only vote.
Check further down the page. When banking actually became an option.

Look just a bit higher, anon, when people were voting to spend or bank. That was the second vote.
>>
>>31810394

You still voted for Draconic Breath.
>>
>>31810392
Nah, more like several areas around the scar JJ would visit where plants would grow.

The amount of food to feed everyone in a central space would be immediately obvious.
>>
>>31810394
Don't feed them, man.
>>
>>31810444
the sewer connected to the tunnel has plenty of "manure" like stuff.

and we could grow mushrooms there.

I've always wanted Super Mutant Farming quest, hopefully my wish will be fulfilled!
>>
>>31810368
I forgot about how it could help cut the legs off the black market the Corsairs run too. It'd at least keep them from stealing food.
>>
>>31810490
And so on. Doing it inside buildings, near the various factional areas without going inside their territory. Neutral ground.

It's not really a 'best option', it's not a kumbaya moment, it's a 'here's some food, maybe cut down on ransacking everything nearby because we don't want Sentinels everywhere' moment.

Since then, it's turned into Phasing part 2. It also has a few bonuses elsewhere (being able to grow herbs medicinal plans for our group, animal spy network, attack of the killer tomatoes to make DOOM proud...).
>>
>>31810411
Yep. When I had to choose from the four, I did. It was the only one I even vaguely felt was appropriate. The 'least disliked' option, as it were.
Bank was preferred. Voted for as soon as it was an option. Got outvoted. Both on the vote to bank before, and the one after. Didn't like it, but that's how it goes.
Can we be civil now?
