You step forward into the clearing, making a bee-line for the chest. Louie is a few paces behind you. The moment he clears the end of the forest path, you're suddenly cast into a deep shadow. Looking up, a sense of dread fills you as you see the sun is blotted out by a gigantic ball of blue slime descending straight towards you. You fling yourself out the way as it impacts with a huge rumble, shaking the earth with its impact. Louie manages to keep his feet, but barely. You look up to behold the gigantic slimy beast, a small voice in the back of your head commenting how the golden crown atop it's 'head' would probably sell for quite a sum.

A familiar tingly sensation overcomes your body as ghost writing appears before you. A heavy electro track begins playing from the forest all around you.
[THE CROWNED SLIME]
[~LORD OF THE SLIMES~]
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cg1iV7cPllI

A rustling around you calls your attention to the forest around you, and between the trees you're sure you can make out the shapes of more tiny slimes bounding their way towards the clearing.
Louie hasn't noticed this however, as he's too busy charging headlong at the King.

Louie rushes forward, swinging hard and carving a huge chunk from the giant slime's body. The chunk falls to the ground where it is instantly absorbed into the earth. The slime doesn't even react, however, with the wound instantly closing itself, pulling slime from another part of its mass. Louie cuts in again, dealing another blow before leaping back out of the way as it tumbles forwards to try to crush him.

He uses the movement to quickly slice behind him bisecting one of the two slimes that leap from the wood behind him, but the second rushes past him to bounce into the body of its king, integrating seamlessly into the slimey mass.

>Focus on the little ones!
>>
>>31818879
"The little ones," you shout at Louie, "get the little ones first!"

Louie instantly switches stance, from being light on his feet and ready to move to being fixed in place, one foot back as a strong pivot. From this stance, he begins easily hacking through the small slimes as they attempt to rush past him. However, the horde coming from the trees seems endless, and after the first score or so of kills, you can see a sheen of sweat glistening on his skin. You're not sure how long he can keep this up, but you can definitely see that most of the small slimes seem to have switched their attention to him now, trying to mob him instead of rushing to their King while the rest are sticking to the darkness of the treeline, apparently waiting for a clear route past. The King sits half way across the clearing from Louie, content to hang back and watch him exhaust himself.

>Switch focus to the King, aim for the crown!
>>
>>31818893
"Louie, try to get the crown!"

"WHAT!?"

"The King's Crown! It's gotta be a sign of power, right!"

"Are you crazy?"

"Just do it!"

Louie scowls his disapproval at the insane plan, but switches his attention to the King nonetheless. He leaps up, jabbing his sword deep into the King's flesh. It immediately bounces into the air, slamming down and trying to shake him off again. He holds tight, pulling a knife from his belt with his shield-arm and jabbing that in for extra purchase. The King bucks and bounces, desperate to throw his new rider. Louie clings tight though, and uses the two blades as ice-picks to claw his way further up the king until he can just about reach the crown, pulling it from the blob's head.
The King freezes as Louie falls to the ground before exploding into a shower of smaller slimes. There's a long moment of silence in the clearing before every slime in the area suddenly rushes Louie as one.

>Put on the crown!

At your behest, Louie puts the crown on his head. The action does nothing to slow the slimes' advance, and he is instantly bowled to the ground. You wince as he crunches into the dirt under their combined weight, hoping the damage wasn't too severe. The crown skitters from his head, rolling to a stop at your feet. The slimes start rushing you instead.

>Put on the crown!

You take a single step outside the field, just enough to grab the crown. The step back brings a tingly sensation once more as you pass out of interactable space just in time for the swarm to descend upon you. You're now safe inside the field with a shiny new crown as they leap hopelessly at you, passing through your body. At this point, they are ignoring Louie in their frantic attempts to leap at the crown in your hands.

>Send Louie home. Explore with your new army!
>>
>>31818906
As Louie struggles back to his feet, you call out to him. "Louie, grab the chest and head back. We'll meet you later!"

"R-right, sure." He shakily walks to the chest, takes the loot from inside and enters the Go-Home door. It slams shut behind him, leaving you, Tear, the crown and a horde of slimes in the clearing.

"And so?" Tear raises an eyebrow at you. "What exactly shall we be doing now?"

"Continue exploring, of course!" You say with an excited grin. Together, you turn back to the woodland track and head off looking for more adventure. After a few minutes of walking along the path, casually slaughtering any monsters you pass under a tidal wave of blue slime, you spot Alouette with a large group of men. From their gear, you'd guess they were Adventurers. They're fanned out in a search pattern around her, inspecting every last corner of the clearing. Her haughty tones fill your ears even from here.

"Quickly, peasants! There are treasure in these parts and I shall be the one to find them! Ohohoho!"
As you enter from the far side of the clearing, one of the men spots you and calls out to his fellows. Looking up with surprise from their work, half her men turn tail and flee in understandable terror. The other half quickly form into ranks, creating a protective line around Alouette.

>Try to talk!

"Hi Allouette!" You wave a greeting.

"AAAAAHHH!" she replies.

You frown, waving again. Perhaps she didn't see you? You take a few paces forward and a pair of your slimes leap through your incorporeal body to squish the center guard. He barely has time to yelp before he's crushed into a red paste on the path. The others hold formation, lashing out with their weapons against the slimes now raining down upon their formation. In short order, they've managed to fell a half-dozen of your slimes, but lose another guard as a trio of slimes rush in from the trees beside the path and crush him on their mad dash towards you.

You squeak an apology to the men, and try to call to Alouette again. "AAAAAAAAAHH!" Two more men get squished. Her forces are quickly dwindling to your army's onslaught, while your numbers keep getting infinitely replaced by the forests around you.

>Run back to the Go-Home door!

You try to open coherent conversation with Alouette again. She responds with more incoherent screaming. By the time you give up trying to shout sense at her, all but one of her men have been been squished by your slimes. Thinking about it, to any casual observer this probably looks like you're purposefully attacking her with a horde of monsters. This... isn't a place you should be.
You turn tail and quickly scarper back to the Go-Home door, leaving a gorey mess and a terrified rival in your wake.

You are now back at the door, with the crown and a horde of uncontrollable slimes.

>Break the crown?

You make for the door, but Tear tries to hold you back. "Recette, what are you doing? That crown is going to lead the slimes back to Pensee! We have to leave it behind!"

"Wha-no! It's our loot, and I'm keeping it!"

"Recette, please see reason!" Her tiny fairy strength is no match for you and you step through the door, instantly being teleported back to the alley behind the Adventurer's Guild.
Tear hovers beside you, glowering in silence.

Louie is sitting against the wall across from you, breathing shallow, pained breaths but otherwise looking healthy. He has a bag full of loot sitting by his feet. You drop down next to him. "Louie? Louie are you alright?"

"Hey Recette. Yeah, fine. Just needed a quick rest is all."

You breath a sigh of relief before taking the bag from him and standing up. As you do so, a shadow falls over you, a silhouette blocking the sun's light from the far end of the alley. A chill runs up your spine as the world seems to go awfully quiet all of a sudden.

A monotone voice punctuates the still air. "Return it, please."

You face down the girl, "return what?" A humming, whining sound fills the quiet. It's coming from her over-sized gloves. You keep a straight face as best you can. "Would you like to purchase something from me?"

"Return it," she states simply as she raises her fist level with you face.

"Remember when we talked about money?" you ask her, raising your voice over the whining noise emanating from her golden fists. "If I have something you want, you're supposed to trade with me for it!"
Your voice breaks as you shout this last part. You shut your eyes tight, suddenly aware that you probably just sentenced yourself to death by antagonizing this girl.
Even from here, you can feel the raw magical power gathering for the attack directed at you.

And then- it dissipates.

"Elaborate," she commands you.

"You- you need to offer me something of equal value for the thing you want to trade for. That's where money comes in, since money always has value to everyone, you can offer me the amount of money we both agree that it's worth. That way, I'm 'selling' the thing and you're 'buying' it."

There is a long, long pause. You glance around to note that Louie has a firm grip on sword and shield, legs taught, ready to pounce but not yet moving. Tear's eyes are wide, fixed on Arma.

Finally, the strange girl moves. Her left hand reaches back behind her, bringing out a large lather purse bulging with coins. She throws it at you. You fumble the catch, spilling large golden coins onto the floor. They are of a design you've never seen before, but they're definitely real gold.

"Value: 800,000 pix. This is acceptable?" You can't quite tell if that was supposed to be a question or a statement.

>?
>>
>>31820019

You let out a deep sigh of relief, legs buckling under you as you fall to the stone floor. Louie barely manages to catch you before you finally let the repressed terror overcome you, and you pass out.

When you awake, you're once more in your own bed. The afternoon sun beams its way brightly into your room through the open window, and you can hear the active bustling of the townsfolk in the street below. You can hear Tear and Louie moving about downstairs.

You slide out of bed, slip your shoes on, grab a pouch full of pix before finding Tear and invited her with you. Together, you slip out the front door, calling to Louie that you'll be back later. He has enough time to look mildly surprised before you've closed the door and are skipping away down the road towards the marketplace. Tear seems less enthused, floating a short way behind you.

Almost every person who passes you greets you good day, and it takes you almost twice as long as usual to reach the market as you stop to chat about nothing with the townsfolk. Finally, you come to the market.

Your first stop, as always, is Mrs. Fletcher's candy stall.

"Good morning, Recette! I haven't seen you in days, I was starting to worry!"

"Ehehe, sorry Mrs. Fletcher. I've been a little busy."

"Well that's no good. Here, take some time to relax. How about some shortcake? This one's on me today."

You wander on through a few more stalls, noticing a cafe selling tea. You order a cup for both you and Tear for a few pix before continuing on towards the fountain.

"Hey, Tear, are you okay? You don't seem very happy."

"Well, I just don't see what use there is in frivolously spending time in the market when we could have opened the store. We have a lot of work ahead of us if we want to remain as profitable as we have been. I know I said you could relax, but I did not expect you to drag me along for the journey."

By now, you're approaching the fountain in the center of the town square. There are quite a few people bustling about, but there are a few benches empty near the water feature. You take a seat and tuck into the shortcake, tea waiting beside you on the arm of the bench. Tear quietly sips at her own tiny cup.

In the corner of your eye, you're pretty sure you caught the movement of a certain lady-thief ducking through the door tot he pub.

You finish eating the rest of the cake, carefully making sure to savor every single bite, before chasing it down with your cooled tea and started off towards the pub door. Tear tries to protest that she hasn't finished her drink yet, but you're already crossing the threshold into the pub.

And you immediately accosted by a toned man in a fine, tailored suit. "Well hello there, darling. What's a cute little thing like you doing in an establishment like this?" His arm drops down around your shoulders. "Why not come sit with us and tell us about yourself?" The stench of hard alcohol rolls across you and his hand squeezes a little harder.

He growls his response, "why you little bi-"
It's here that the door to the bar swings open again and Tear flutters in. She comes to an abrupt hover as she takes in the scene before her.

"Mi-Miss Tear!" the toned man squeaks, drawing her ire.

"Carlos, may I inquire as to why you would happen to be manhandling my agent?" The man instantly lets go of you, bowing his head to your fairy advisor.

"No, you weren't. Now you are. Do not make the mistake twice. Begone." The man and his small team of friend book it out of the pub. You don't think you've ever seen men that big move that fast.

>>
>>31821364
"Louie's been asking me to get him registered. What'll it be like if I do? What sort of stuff do they tax and confiscate?"

"Ah, well. First off you've got the upfront fee to register. I think that's about fifty grand these days, not sure. The price changes. From there, using the Guild's services will cost you about a grand each time. That's where our pay comes from, that's all we get. From there, they tax... pretty much everything. For between a fifth to a half of what it's worth on the market, depending on how much they think you'll be able to price it up by for profit. They also register every item coming into the city and send a copy of the list to the Church. Anything the Church deems heretical gets seized, no arguments. And it's hard to tell what they take offense to."

"Oh," you breath, "so do they monitor you pretty close too? Like, how often can you pull off that mugging stick you tried on me?"

"Eh, that? All the time. They monitor what comes in and out with the merchants and traders, not the Adventurers. A berk's gotta make a living somehow, that's how I make mine." She grins, emptying the rest of her mug down her throat.

We need cheap goods to mark up, and marking up accessories.
Also at this point we could probably invest in vending machines. We culd probably ask tear to get some one to rig them so that certain people with keys and such can access "private items".

Wow, adventurers have it rough.

We should probably make a policy for inviting adventurers on these dungeon runs. Fully furnish them with equipment and they get first-pick of stuff that makes them better adventurers. Is that enough/too much?

We might also want to see if it is a good idea to implement customer reward programs or such. Kinda like how some restaurants have cards that give you free food once you buy a certain amount of stuff. We'd have to pass it by Tear and classify the reward so that it seems like a good deal to the consumer, but actually let's us come out ahead.

That'd probably be a good way to make friends, but not money.

It seems to me that being an adventurer for a living is pretty rough. Maybe these guys just come here for the experience and relative safety, and then get hired elsewhere as bodyguards or mercenaries when they're powerful enough.

You pop the last of the warm bread into your mouth, before changing the topic. "Would you like to come shopping with us?"

"Eh?"
"Hah?"

Tear and Charme both look at you, Charme surprised and Tear incredulous.

"I understand you're fond of taking care of those in lesser positions than yourself, Recette, but why on earth would you invite this low-life to join us? She is in no way suitable companionship for any upstanding merchant. Please understand that we have a reputation to uphold that is in no way assisted by you wasting away good hours of the day with such... dregs of humanity."

Charme glances at Tear, a smile playing across her features. "Sure! I'd love to join you!"

And that's all for this week, folks!
I'll be lingering as always for some Q&A, and the thread is open for general discussion.

Thanks for reading, I hope to see you all again next week!

So did Aloutte heard us at all? Will she be haunted by our voice for the rest of her life? With thousand yard stares and 'nam-like flashbacks? "I saw my men died to a horde of slimes and all i did was fucking watched"

Is Louie still OK with us, or is he starting to think that risking his life for free room and board and sandwiches may not be such a good deal?

Honestly, I think we might be better off registering him and showing him how much money is lost being legit. Or use those sessions as building up a veneer of legitimacy and safely training Louie to handle bigger threats.

When are we recruiting the other dudes?
>>
>>31822206
Why would she care about some filthy peasants? She can always get new ones.
>>31822166
LSQ when?
>>

>So did Aloutte heard us at all?
She could both see and hear you. She was simply more concerned with the horde of slimes you were bringing down on her.

>>31822211
>Is Louie still OK with us,
I guess you'll have to ask him.

>>31822214
>When are we recruiting the other dudes?
When you stumble into their scenes or roll them on the encounter matrix.

>>31822250
>LSQ when?
Eh. Some time next week, possibly. Maybe. If nothing else comes up.
>>
>>31822292
Oh boy can't wait to see Rivaloutte's retribution. Please don't disappoint.

We just lost a customer for life. Now arma is our only high roller for our more exotic loot.
>>
Don't forget to archive.
>>31822356
Yeah I'm getting kind of tired of random anon suggestions driving off customers. First jewloli, now this.
