In the world of Valaer, the Battle of Tirinia changed everything. That was 680 years ago.

Here lies the human Kingdom of Therindel - less a Kingdom than a confederacy of lordships, duchies, principalities, city-states, et cetera - banded together under the constant threat of attack from the mysterious Wood Elves of the eastern land of Xalfacia. For many centuries, these lords and rulers have bickered amongst each other for the right to succeed the King who fell in battle at Tirinia against the Elves.

Until ten years ago however, when Lord Leandros Lysandros Layton Lamarr the Fiftieth declared his capital city open to all lords and masters for trade, commerce, and alliance. This city within this divided kingdom is the High City of Imperial City! This is the city of adventure, where Adventurers gather to duel, to brag of their accomplishments, and receive missions from the needy and the poor! This is the city where Heroes and Legends are made!

You are not one of those people.

In the High City of Imperial City lies a humble magic shop, Clay's Potions and Solutions. This shop is manned by four people, the wizard Randall the Red, his daughter Marigold, their Spellcat Clay, and their underpaid employee: you.
>>
>>31849991
You are Norman Niemand. A few months ago Randall the Red had caught a particularly bad case of Magic Rot, but he recovered fine thanks to the efforts of your parents who had come by to visit. Now though, he spends his days in the shop, simply smoking his pipe or carving spare pieces of wood instead of working on enchantments. You’d figure that would be something to be concerned about, and you are indeed concerned about it, but there’s something else on your mind at current.

It’s Marigold Merriweather. Just last week, she found herself overcame by wanderlust, and thus dropped out of the Magic Academy. There were a few fights, some arguments, a lot of tears shed upstairs as you worked. It wasn’t much of your business however.

Right now however, spring had fallen on the High City of Imperial City, and with it the warmness and brightness of it all. That meant business as usual. Randall was sitting on a stool in the corner of the shop, smoking his pipe thoughtfully. Clay meanwhile was in the storeroom, continuing to produce potions.

> See what Clay is up to

You decide to quickly check in on Clay before heading back to the counter. You open up the storeroom and peek in. “Clay, how are you doing?”

Clay sits at the lip of a huge burning cauldron. Inside it swirls a smelly mixture of ingredients and other nonsense that makes potions. Clay tilts his head and says, “I am doing very well, Mister Niemand. Thank you.”

“Great.” You nod then let him get back to work. Spellcats generally need time to themselves to work, and Clay is no exception.

With that, you lean forward on the counter, waiting for customers. You already stocked the shelves and made sure everything was in order. It’s not like they could be in any great order than they could be now. You check the time. A couple of hours until lunch, not bad. You did walk here from the Royal Palace.

Boy, that last night with Galena surely was something.

The door opens, revealing a Vogelvolk in a simple vest lined with potions and darts. Must be a thief or an assassin of some kind. You’ve seen his type. The vogelvolk hops up to the counter, swishing his wing to introduce himself with surprisingly good language skills. “I am Falconet! Adventurer of the West!”

>>=[| FALCONET |]=<<
>>=[| Adventurer of the West |]=<<

You nod. “Nice to meet you, feel free to look around.”

Falconet nods, his movements twitching and swift as he hops around the place, browsing potions and the like.

> See if Falconet needs anything

“So, Mister Falconet,” you ask as you stand next to him. “Anything we can interest you in?”

Falconet taps his beak with a feather from his wing. “Yes, yes, yes, I am looking for weapon enchantments!” He swishes a bag of gold. “Something cheap though, I’m not made of money.”

You nod, motioning over to the enchantment pastes on the shelf. “Here, we have plenty of enchantments courtesy of Mister Randall the Red. We have Freeze, Ignite, Acid, Healing-“

Falconet balks. “Healing?”

“For undead.” You shrug. “And drastic surgeries.”

Falconet grunts, then looks over at the enchantments. “Ah, what would you recommend for a light repeating crossbow? I do have to deal with stuff like feral Orcs, wolves, squidbats, the likes.”

Freeze works well against flying foes. they can't fly if they are frozen. and Ignite works well on just about most of the things people run across. Healing is likely not what you need if you won't face off against undead. Oh, Acid will give you an edge against tough foes if you happen to run across them, you may want to get one just in case.

“Can I recommend all of them? Keep versatile after all?”

Falconet shakes his bag a bit. “I am not made of gold, much as I would like to be.”

You shrug, then pull the Ignite enchantment for him. “Ignite then. Sets whatever you hit on fire, useful in a lot of situations.”

“Mhm.” Falconet nods, then takes the enchantment paste jar and looks over it, studying every nook and cranny. “Interesting. I’ll take it. The paste works with bolts right?”

You nod. “As long as you recover them, the bolts won’t be destroyed by the fire.”

“Great!” Falconet hands you the bag of money, feels like thirty gold pieces. “Thank you for your service, human!” He squawks a bit, some form of Vogelvolk laughter. “I tell you, I am planning a raid on a Skyhaven north of here, harpies and witches of all kinds. Terrifying but a lot of plunder to be had!”

You smile. “Good luck then, Mister Falconet. Hope to have you as a repeat customer.”

Falconet bows to you, his wings flaring, then walks out of the shop. Good stuff. You reman the counter, sighing deeply.

“Is Miss Merriweather doing alright, Mister Randall?”

Mister Randall sighs, blowing a bit of smoke. “Ah, she’s doing well.”

“She’s not really leaving, is she?”

Mister Randall shrugs. “Way I see it, she might, she might not. Marigold admittedly doesn’t commit to a lot, but this is different. She really wants this.” He looks down, frowning. “And who am I to stop her?”

“Well,” you say. “I don’t consider myself that experienced in these kinds of things, Mister Randall, but… I’m sure she’ll be fine, Mister Randall.”

“Ah, you’re just saying that,” says Mister Randall. He waves you off, continuing to smoke. “Can I tell you something, Mister Niemand?” You nod. “I adopted Marigold because I wanted something more. Something… something missing with my life, you know? And raising a child- I raised her since I found her in the orphanage, not more than a year old. I raised her to be the woman she is now.” He frowns at that, sighing. “It was a heck of a journey. An adventure you could say.”

You’re quiet for a few seconds, but then you say, “Well, there’s adventure in a lot of things, Mister Randall. I don’t consider myself much of an adventuring man but- But I think she’s finding her own.”

“I suppose.” He crosses his arms, leaning back on the wall. “I hope she doesn’t end up losing herself trying to find adventure in everything.”

“I’m sure she won’t, Mister Randall,” you say.

“She better not,” he says. “I raised her better than that.”

If Miss Marigold is going to adventure, wouldn't it be for the best if you make one more enchanted equipment that will help her in her wandering? that or some way for her to be able to communicate with you no matter where she goes? just trying to get him to get to work again. it'll probably help to get him from not worrying so much

You lean forward on the counter, humming a bit as you keep the counter fresh for any new arrivals. Nothing so far.

Clay comes out of the storeroom, phasing along the floor then materializing onto the counter. “Mister Niemand, I trust you’re well?”

You nod. “Of course, Clay. You?”

“I am well.” Clay continues to move quietly along the walls then comes to rest next to Mister Randall’s leg. “Randall, is Marigold doing well?”

Mister Randall shrugs. “She’s out buying her kit. I’m sure she’s fine.” He looks down at Clay. “You think she’ll be fine, right?”

“I’ve met many adventurers in my time,” says Clay. “Not all of them were particularly fine by the end of their careers. Always out chasing treasures where there wasn’t anyway, or always clinging to that glimmer of fame and fortune. The life of an adventurer can be a painfully short one indeed.”

Mister Randall says, “That doesn’t make me feel better.”

Clay says, “I apologize then.”

The mail dragon comes through the door, coming to roost on the counter. He spits out a rolled up letter to you. You gently pet the dragon on the head, hearing it purr at your touch as you open up the letter.

Dear Norman,

My Lord has helped me refine my writing skills exponentially. From what I hear, apparently Miss Merriweather is planning on becoming and adventurer, and I applaud her for that and wish her the King’s luck on her travels. May fortune and glory find her well.

Norman, I write to you now however as last night was one of the best nights I have ever had with you. I admit, I normally do not open myself up like this, but you’ve made me feel I have new purpose, not just for the sake of His Lord, but for you as well. What I mean to say is that I love you, Norman. If you had asked me a year ago what I would spend the rest of my days doing, it would be that of guarding My Lord to whatever end. But for you now, I would not mind spending my last days with you.

I hope you do not find this sudden and very strange, I am not very good at expressing my thoughts on paper. Please come visit me again at the Palace when you’d like, Norman.

Love,
Galena Gavina Garrison, Guardswoman.

You smile, reading over the letter. Galena, what a girl. You look over at the clock, it’s about lunch time now.

Ask the Lord to help set up an adventurer's guild? As clay said, not all of them come back richer than before, they would need a place to stay, heal up and train. With the King as their patron, he would be likely to call upon their diverse skills, talents, and powers for situations when his own troops won't or shouldn't cut it.
>>
> Break out for lunch

You say goodbye to Mister Randall and Clay then head out to the tavern for lunch. The lovely spring weather thankfully keeps you relatively warm and cozy as you walk along the busy streets. People all around are simply walking to and fro, bartering with open air traders, or simply smoking pipes on the stoops of their homes. You can also pick up the smell of fresh breads, pies, and other pastries. If there’s anything your father was, it was being a good cook.

You enter into the tavern.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qAO0fbBkZdg

The tavern is surprisingly a bit empty. There’s only the occasional adventurer or tenant walking around, or drinking at a table or at the counter. You hit up the barkeep and put down a few coins for lunch. He presents you a fresh plate of pork ribs, some carrots and peas, and a pint of ale. Good stuff. You start digging in.

Then you notice something missing. You look over to see Willmot, looking a bit down as she sits down to herself. That’s strange, she’s normally dancing even when there’s no one to dance with.

Willmot shrugs, crossing her arms. “Oh, you would like to know, wouldn’t you?”

You say, “Well, I came over to ask, so yes. I’d like to know.”

Willmot says, “Our little tavern here is closing down.” You blink in surprise. You eat here all the time, doesn’t look like it would close down. “The Old Man got bought out, so us staff here have to find new jobs.”

“Oh, I’m sorry,” you say. “I’ll miss this place.”

“Me too,” says Willmot. “I’ve got a lot good memories. Lot of hilarious stories too.”

“Do most of them involve sex?” you ask.

Willmot giggles a bit, glancing away. “Maaaaybe. But, regardless of what memories they are, they are still good memories to me. Apparently the place is going to get converted into some kind of guild or mansion or something.”

You nod. “Really.”

“No, I’m not going to whore myself out to them,” she says, laughing. “Ha! Figure I might as well specialize, I consider myself pretty good at tailoring maybe. It’s certainly not Orc work but it’s something.”

“Sure,” you say. “That sounds lovely, Miss Willmot.”

“Thanks, certainly ain’t compared to yours. I mean, look at you, steady job, lovely girlfriend, the works.” She sighs, leaning back. “Wish I could have something like that.”

“Well, Miss Willmot,” you say. “You could. Just got to work hard at it.”

“Right,” she says. “Well, good luck, Niemand.” She stands up, dusting herself off and heading to the dance floor.

“I should be the one saying that to you,” you say. You stand, smiling at her. “King’s Blessing to you, Miss Willmot.”

Willmot smiles, then starts dancing on her own to the music.

You decide to order yourself a second meal, your last one in this Tavern so to speak. You’re going to miss the Old Man and this tavern of his. It’s served you for years since you moved here. Now though? It’s not going to be nothing more than some rich man’s place to assemble his friends. You suppose that’s not the worst way for a place of energy, happiness, and excitement to go. You can always find another.

You watch Willmot dance along to the music. She stomps and kicks happily, giving her best in it all. Maybe…

You write down on a slip of paper for the barkeep to give to Willmot.

Miss Willmot,

If you ever need anything, I’m at the Shop. I can get you a decent a job if I can, maybe even a good place to stay if you were staying at the Tavern. You’ve been a good friend to me, it’s time I repay that for you, if you would make it so.

Norman Niemand

You head out of the Tavern, looking over the sign. The Magical Mare. The old place is really going to go. You feel hurt by that. Old Ian Igram must have been desperate to sell the place.

But regardless, you arrive back at the Shop. It seems Mister Randall has headed back upstairs. Clay meanwhile has been managing the counter for you.

You lean on the counter again, waiting patiently for customers. “Anybody buy anything, Clay?”

Clay says, “Orc came, bought a few health potions. Other than that, nothing.”

You nod. “Good.” An hour or two passes without too much happening. People pass by, occasionally windowshop at the place, but nothing sticks. Clay occasionally shifts between shelves, checking the potions in case of impurities or other imperfections, they couldn’t be more pure if he tried though.

The door opens, you look up from the counter to see- “Miss Merriweather.”

Marigold smiles shyly, clad in simple leather armor over her usual dress. On her back is a simple sword along with a bow and a quiver of arrows. “Norman.”

You nod. “So are you leaving today?”

“Yes!” She nods violently. “The next carriage going down south leaves in thirty minutes. I can’t afford to miss it.”

“Well, I’ll miss having you around, Miss Merriweather.”

“Aaawwwww…” Miss Merriweather blushes, slapping her cheeks. “I’ll miss you too, Norman! We’ve been such great friends you and I!” There’s a quick creak of the stairs as Mister Randall pokes his head out, looking upon Miss Merriweather. Miss Merriweather smiles nervously, blushing a bit of her hair out of her eyes.

“Marigold,” he says. “You look good. I thought I asked for you to get something a little more protective.”

Marigold frowns, gesturing lazily. “This… is what they had in stock.”

Mister Randall nods, scratching his beard. “Alright.” He holds his arms out, to which Miss Merriweather quickly embraces him. “King’s sake, I will miss you, Marigold. Please don’t get hurt out there, it would kill me.”

“I’ll be by to visit, Papa,” she says. She holds her adoptive father for quite a while. “I love you so much. I’m glad you’re letting me do this!”

Mister Randall lets her go, then holds her by the shoulders. “If you need anything, you know where to find me.”

With that, all of you leave the Shop. Clay sits upon your shoulder as you all stand outside the shop. Miss Merriweather quickly tightens the leather, and stretches her muscles a bit. Then she grins and points to the air. She yells, “Adventure is out there!” She turns her point into a fist. “And I’m going to claim it!” She turns to you all, smiling proudly. “Goodbye!”

“Goodbye, Marigold. May the King’s blessing be with you.”

Marigold smiles from ear to ear, then runs up, hugging you tight. You hug her, patting her on the back. She lets go, then gently pats Clay on the head. “Goodbye, you two. You especially, Clay. I’ll miss you.”

Clay nods. “Your absence will be noted.”

Marigold frowns mockingly, then giggles. She turns around, gripping the straps of her leather armor, then begins stepping forward, out into the crowd. Marigold turns back as she leaves, waving goodbye. You, Mister Randall, and Clay wave back to her, all smiles. With that, Marigold fades into the crowd, and becomes another one of the adventurers in the city.

Mister Randall sighs, covering his mouth. You pat him on the shoulder. “You alright?”

He grunts. “They all have to leave you sometime.” He crosses his arms, then smiles at you. “Come on, let’s keep the shop manned.”

Strange really. Things now feel a bit emptier without Marigold. There’s no more happy skips upstairs, no singing or humming as you work. It’s just you, Clay, and Mister Randall now. You sit down in a chair, then cross your arms and lean back. Things are so much quieter now. Mister Randall has retreated back upstairs, you decide that he could use some time alone for now.

Clay says, “I will admit, Marigold Merriweather leaving is already affecting me.”

“How so?” you ask.

“It’s strange,” he says. “Normally, she’d be petting me or calling me fuzzy. But now? Nothing.” He cozies up, curling into a ball on the counter. “I will miss that.”

You nod. “I will too. Hopefully she finds herself out there, King knows, my parents did.”

You look at the clock, only an hour until dinner.

You continue manning the counter up until dinner. The day is starting to wind down as people head home from their shops or places of work. Still a few more windowshoppers but otherwise, nothing too solid. Probably just a slow day for the Shop today, it’s not like there aren’t dozens of other Magic Shops in the city itself that other people frequent. Still, it’s kind of sad knowing the shop isn’t that popular.

Regardless, the door opens, you look up to see Galena Garrison, wearing her guard regalia. “Norman.” She smiles at you, her one good eye regarding you warmly. “Nice to see you.”

You smile back at her. She leans over the counter, then you quickly give her a kiss on the cheek. “Hello, Galena. You finally come of your own accord it seems.”

“Well,” she shrugs. “I just hope I didn’t-“ She blushes a little, glancing away. “-Didn’t embarrass myself with that letter.”

“It’s fine,” you say.

Galena smiles. “I’m ready to head to dinner when you are, Norman.”

You open up Mister Randall’s door, finding him sulking at the foot of his bed. “Mister Randall?” He grunts at you. “I’m heading out for the day. Are you going to be alright?”

Mister Randall nods, then looks up at you with the saddest look in his eyes. “Yes, I will be. Thank you, Mister Niemand.” He tilts his head a bit. “I hope I am not bringing you down or anything. Do enjoy yourself, I’ll just sit here with Clay, contemplating. Usual business.”

You nod. “Are you sure?”

“Yes,” he says. “Go on, have fun!” He smiles a bit. “You’re still young, you have some adventure left in you.”

You smile back at him. “Thank you, Mister Randall. Take care.”

“To you as well, Mister Niemand.”

With that, you head back down the stairs. You pat Clay on the head. “I’m heading out, Clay.”

“Very good, Mister Niemand,” says Clay. “I will expect you back tomorrow.”

“Sure,” you say. With that, you take Galena by the hand and exit the shop.

Galena asks you, “So where shall we go?”

You decide to have your last supper down in the Magical Mare, probably the last supper it’ll ever see at all even. You sit at a booth, digging in as the music plays for the patrons who happily drink, eat, and sing to the music

Galena frowns. “First the Tavern, then Miss Merriweather. It’s a day of departures.”

“Yep,” you say. “Admittedly, I’m glad that Marigold is off to find her own way. Let her discover who she is. She’s off to find her own little adventure.”

Galena nods. “We all go through that period in our lives, don’t we?”

“I suppose,” you say. “But I still hope for Marigold, maybe she’ll find herself a fortune, maybe she’ll return home, who knows?”

You and Galena waltz along to the last song the Tavern will ever play.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eNigFpaBBf8

Galena has really improved her steps and dancing since the two of you have been together. Funny, it only feels like a few weeks ago that you met Galena and that she tried to kill you. That was pretty much last year. Now? She’s dancing, she’s smiling, she’s yours. Funny how things work out sometimes.

Galena says, “I’ll miss this tavern.”

You nod. “Our first date was here, remember that?”

“It’s a cherished memory of mine, Norman,” she says quietly. “It’ll be sad to see it go.”

“Of course,” you say. “Let’s just enjoy it while we can.”

With that, you quietly dance the night away until Igram finally says his parting farewells to everyone. He shakes hands with all of his regulars, apologizing for closing the tavern. Willmot stands next to him, smiling at everyone, wryly.

Igram shakes your hand. “Mister Niemand, it’s a shame to lose you. Hope we meet again someday.”

“If you start a new tavern, you better tell me,” you say. “I’ll go through the Frozen north to spend a day there.” He laughs at that, patting you on the back. Willmot nods to you, smiling. You hope Willmot takes you up on your offer.

You stand outside the Magical Mare, the last ones out. The lights have gone out from the windows for the last time.

What now?

You and Galena walk hand in hand as you take the scenic route to wherever you want to spend the night.

Galena looks up at the starry night sky. “The stars are beautiful this time of year.”

“They are,” you say. “But I’d rather not strain my neck.” You wrap your arm around her, bringing her close. “I’ll settle for you instead, Galena.”

“Haha,” says Galena in her most deadpan nature. “You’re a ladykiller, Norman.”

You say, “Well, Galena, I did say I’d follow you into the stars, didn’t I? I have one right here.”

“Stop!” she says. “You’re making me sick!”

“Oh please,” you say. “It’s not anything you haven’t heard before.”

Galena giggles a bit. “I suppose so.”

You arrive at your home. It’s a simple two story house, affordable from your wage at the Magic Shop. You open the door, allowing Galena to step inside first. It’s a rather Spartan interior, simple couches and chairs, fireplace, and upstairs is the bedroom and bathroom. Nothing too special. It’s home to you though, and you are sharing it with Galena.

Dear Mother and Father,

I write to you in the hopes that this letter will find you well. Just today, Marigold Merriweather has departed from the shop in search of adventure and excitement in her life, and I wish her all the best. If you two ever run into her, please take care of her. Teach her well your ways, as you did for me. In the meantime, I am still here in the High City of Imperial City, with my newest love Galena whom you met some time ago.

Our relationship is steadily growing, and I do believe that maybe one of these days, I will make her my wife. Not today, maybe tomorrow or next week or next month. But one of these days. It will happen, I assure you, so you two don’t have to worry about grandchildren.

I love the both of you very much, please continue sending me letters, and despite what you may think I do genuinely enjoy the tales of your adventures that you send back. Use well the days.

Your loving son,
Norman Niemand

Galena has more or less managed to take off her armor and plates from her regalia, leaving her in the simple blue underdress, letting it flow and billow as she moves around the house. You slot the letter at the window for the mail dragon, then walk over to her, hugging her from behind. She laughs as you lead her to the couch.

“Norman, please!” she says.

“Oh?” You smirk as you lie her down on her back. “Come now, Galena!”

She giggles as you sit on top of her, her good eye flicking from your face down your body. “But-!“

“No buts,” you say. You lean down and gently kiss her on the lips. “This is my home, Galena. And I’m glad to share it with you.”

You and Galena embrace each other in a deep kiss. She gently moans as you run your hand along her smooth well-toned legs. She breaks away for a second, smiling. “Adventurous, tonight. Aren’t you?”

You shrug. “Well, yeah.” You quickly kiss her, then say, “But only for you, Galena.”

Galena grabs your collar, pulling you into another kiss. The two of you continue through this throughout the night, finally moving onto the ultimate expression of love you two can do in your bed. It was fast, it was hard, it was passionate. Her moans and squeals only spurred you on further, but finally, midnight strikes. The two of you lie in bed, her resting her head on your chest, fast asleep.

It seems the day has ended.
In the High City of Imperial City lies a humble magic shop, Clay's Potions and Solutions. You work here day after day, under the employ of the wizard Randall the Red. His Spellcat Clay often assists you, even serving as a bit of a joker at times despite his lack of emotions. Your lover Galena supports you as she juggles you and her duty to guard Lord Lamarr. Marigold often writes to you of her adventures as she travels throughout the South.

As for you, you’re just a simple shopkeep.

And that’s quite possibly the best adventure you could ask for.
