LAST EPISODE: You interrupted a play, took in an opera, and picked up the bill.

- - -
It's been a busy two days since the fight at the Gentleman's Club. Sachiko lost Yumi as a roommate and gained two more, in the form of the Kuei-Jin. She's a little more patient with these two seeing as how they don't make a mess of her house and shrine, sleep nearly all day, and have decided that the long drawers of the old cabinet she keeps in the storeroom are perfect beds.

She still puts arrows into your sign and door, but it's less out of hate, and more of gentle reminders that she expects you to pick up half of the tab on the little things that help the community run. Bribes to get decent police presence, funding to help fix the plumbing in some of the older buildings, and other activities that are slowly allowing a seed of hope to grow once again in the 'Reject Zone.'

Kato, the asshole whom you split from his ikiryo, was reunited with his spirit. Thanks to copious amounts of mood slime, help from Dr. Spengler, and an industrial nozzle that was used to inject pork filling into dumplings. You noted that there was a chance of long term side effects, on top of the fact that he'll be wearing adult diapers for the rest of his life. Either way, you turned his shitty ass over to P-COC and Yasuo, who said he'd take him to the regular police. With the way Kato was drooling, you don't think that he'll be doing anything unseemly again.

Business has still been brisk, what with the 100 Bloody Nights still going on. Both days has you pairing off with your partners, to go deal with a minor level haunting. Usually a poltergeist, or a free floating entity, or a small manifestation from a black slime build up. They're still small fry though, and you've dealt with worse.

Today, you head out of your room into the main room of the Dumpling Factory. Sato is leafing through a folder of papers, Akira is browsing on his laptop, and Star is on the phone.

You put some toaster waffles into the machine, and then sit down next to Sato. "Who's Star talking to?"

"The Rabbit Girl." He says. "She's thinking about having her warren crash her for a night, and she's still asking us to help her long-necked friend move her furniture for her."

"I thought that furniture didn't belong to her?" You ask.

Sato shrugs. "Apparently that's just a detail."

"Okay," You sigh. "What are you doing?"

"Looking over some of my Father's records. He was an accounting consultant for a bunch of people, and I think there's more than a few we should look into." He says with a frown. "As the ancients say, "A son who over looks his father's past is one who cannot see his family to the future...or something like that."

"Hmm." You say, you turn to Akira. "And what are you doing?"

"Checking out that cursed house where that Aspect of Oiwa is." He says. "I am SO looking forward to this, this bitch is going down!"

Hoo boy, Akira's back into 'assault mode.'

Well, maybe with a little help you can swing today's job in one direction.

"Okay, Akira." You say, pulling up a chair next to him. "If we're going to do this, then let's do this in a way that doesn't get us all killed."

Akira nods. "Okay, well...as far as I can tell it's a localized entity, focused around this house." He points at the screen. "People go into the house, they end up disappearing, and maybe bits and pieces are found later."

"If this place is a death trap, why hasn't it been knocked down, or demolished?" Sato asks.

"There have been attempts." Akira says. "Machinery fails, workers die, and in one case, there's a sworn statement that the damage repaired itself overnight."

"Okay, we'll be in touch. Yeah, we'll have Sana unlock the place for you. Okay, bye...yeah, boba jibun yourself..." Star says, rolling her eyes. "So, basic haunted house routine? PKE Disruptors, lots of slime, and maybe a wrecking ball?" Star says.

Akira nods. "I think so." He drums his fibers and then makes a face. "I mean, I think that's what we're going to do, but there HAS to be more than just that. This is an Aspect of Oiwa. Not your usual malevolent masonry."

"Agreed." You say. "We should...

Akira rolls his eyes but nods.

"Alright, well...no sense we can't split up at this point. Two of us look for people who have had encounters with the house, and two of us look at the history." You say.

Sato nods. "Okay, umm...how're we going to do that then?"

Star is looking over Akira's shoulder. "Someone had to make these websites about the place, right?"

Akira nods. "They've got stories too, a few are from the same school that's near the house. And there's one that's repeated over and over about a girl at a volunteer center."

Sato drums his fingers. "Plus we could just ask the local police if they're interested." He sighs and shrugs. "Maybe P-COC knows something."

Star holds up her phone. "We could ask the yokai that we know if they know anything. Maybe Rini and her Rabbits, or Kali know something?"

"Plus, there's always the library, news records, and just asking around the neighborhood." You say. "Alright, so we have a lot of options."

She looks at you over the script that she's reading. "Will you run lines with me?"

"Sure." You say.

"Eh, why not?" She says. "We'll be able to write off lunch as a business expense."

"So, what are the rest of us doing?" Star says, with an annoying little smirk on her face.

"Contact Rini and Kira, see if they know anything." You say.

Akira makes a disgusted noise.

"Hey!" Sato smacks Akira. "You said that you were going to try and be less of a hotheaded asshole about this."

"It doesn't mean I have to LIKE it." He says. "But fine, I'll play nice for the yokai."

Sato punches him in the shoulder. "Don't be a passive-agressive asshole either!"

"You sure you want to leave him with us?" Star asks.

"It'll be good for him." You say. "Anyway, you two can keep him in line."

"Okay, we'll call you if we get anything interesting." Sato says.

"Okay, come on Sana." You say as you and she head out.

"So why are we heading to this library?" Sana asks.

"Local papers on this ward." You say.

"Alright, help me read lines." She says, handing you her script. "I think I have a shot for this one."

You read lines with Sana. She's got it down very well. However...there's something weird about this script. There's a lot of 'AD-LIB HERE' lines.

Sana says that it's normal and she's seen it before in other scripts. You guess so, but for an audition? It's weird. Also, you can't tell what, exactly, but there's some part of your mind that telling you this is creepy. You don't see how, it's a silly rom-com script, no big deal.

The train stops, and you get out. You make your way to the library that's closest to the house. The old lady behind the desk gives you a momentary glance, and then a disapproving frown at your attire, then goes back to her computer screen.

"So, where are we starting?"

Heh, wonder what they're gonna right on that police report.

On that note, I'm very intrigued by the politics involved in all this. Apparently paranormal entities can be licensed and we saved vampires from destruction by calling them supernatural entities instead of foreign citizens.

I wonder how that one group, what we they called? who were advocating ghosts rights would react to the question:

"Given the choice, would it be more right to treat vampires and ghosts as people and have them extradited to their assured death, or would you treat them as paranormal entities and allow them the sanctuary of their haunting grounds where they are found?"

You scan around, a little nervous. Ghostbusters and libraries have had a tenuous relationship at best.

You actually get a little ping. This isn't the world's greatest library, or one of the ones that's connected to a larger system. It's got a lot of old books and donated books. One is giving off a ping.

You reach up for it, but Sana grabs your arm.

"Don't you remember the rules in the protocol binder? One of them quite clearly says 'Don't Read The Books!' I don't want to have to wipe your face off of the floor."

You pause. She's...not wrong. You at least look at the book in question. It's an out-of-date history textbook. There's two other, identical, copies right next to it.

You have Sana hold open a containment bag, and you carefully grab the book with your gloved hands and drop it in there, then you seal it tight, label it, and hang onto it.

The librarian is fine with you taking it. It's an out of date textbook, that they have too many copies of already.

"Newspapers?" Sana asks.

You nod. "Newspapers."

This is an old library, it actually has microfiche. After a little bit of fiddling around to figure out how it works you start to page through back issues. You've got a vague date of when the stories and disappearances started, so you start there.

Bingo.

It's not in the regular newspapers. Oh, it is, but it's just mentioned in a three inch blurb that says there was a 'Tragic accident,' and that's it.

The tabloid that's from that same time however, has all the gory details. No need to star-suck or make up aliens when there's actual sensational blood.

A wife was murdered by her husband, she was beaten, thrown down the stairs, dragged by the hair, and finally had her neck snapped...which didn't kill her instantly...rather she died slowly, choking to death on her own blood.

Then the husband drowned their son and the family cat in the bathtub. He held them under the water, one in each hand. Another act that didn't kill instantly, but took just as long...if not longer.

Finally the husband hung himself in the upstairs study.

The reasons for this slaughter are unknown, there's rumors of infidelity, but nothing solid.

The first illnesses, disappearances, and unexplained deaths begin 4 months later.

One more interesting thing, Kayako's mother is mentioned in the article. Briefly. She was apparently a miko.

"Okay," Sana says. "That's grim."

"Yeah." You say. But it's a little confusing, you could see how something like that could cause a haunting, but it doesn't seem like the thing that would be able to become an Aspect of Oiwa. There's a missing piece to this.

"So, are we done here? Cause, I could use some lunch." Sana says.

"Oh but it's not just Kayako!" The old woman says. "People say that they see her boy too, howling like a cat...also...every other person that ever died in, or because of that house! They're all in there, trapped forever. It's how she lures people, and torments them." She nods.

"How do you know?" Sana asks.

"I had a friend who was stupid enough to go in there. She said that she heard a girl crying, and she jumped over the wall...then something pulled on her arm and the next thing she knew, she was inside the house!

"She ran out as fast as she could, but that place is poison. The moment you're inside, you're cursed. And she told me she kept seeing people, everywhere, and dark black hair creeping out of cracks. Then one day...she just vanished. Went into her apartment, and never came out, and the place was empty."

The librarian shivers. "I've walked by that house...and I swear...I've seen her face in the window. Beckoning me." She shakes her head. "You couldn't pay me enough to go through that gate."

"What about the destruction attempts?" You ask. "I heard there were issues?"

The librarian nods. "They've never worked. Ever. I don't think that house CAN be destroyed...so now the gate is locked shut with a yellow rope, and they put up a caution sign at the front of the lane. Anything more than that...and She fights back."

"Do you know anything about the people in the house, the double murder/suicide?" You ask. "the first one, Kayako was the wife's name?"

She nods. "She was a...very strange girl. Apart from that, it...well...it wasn't the happiest of marriages. More for the child's benefit, than anything else...and I don't think the child was planned." The librarian says. You fight back a grin, social rules or not, old women loved to gossip. "She would go off to these 'learning centers' instead of staying home with her son." She shakes her head. "A very strange girl, never fit in like she should have." She sniffs. "But it was still very sad, of course."

"Of course." You say. "Did you know anything about her mother?"

She shakes her head. "I heard that she was a priestess, and there was a bit of a scandal regarding that. I know she never visited her daughter, or grandson. Disgraceful, really."

"Uh huh." You say. "Thanks."

"Of course." She says, and returns to her solitaire game.

You leave with Sana. You could research more but you learned something important from all of that. Something bad.

That house has a Legion-Class entity within it.

As in 'I am Legion, for we are many.'

The handbook's first advice on encountering a Legion-Class entity is: Do NOT antagonize such an entity.

"I think it's time we get some lunch." You say.

"Good, I'm starved." Sana says.

Lunch is at a ramen stand, and it's pretty good.

Well, it's not exactly "slime her to death" in so much as we get rid of that house shield she as brick by brick and fight her out in the open. Was thinking we could have Sachiko get a barrel of chalk and a cartload of candles to set up a large containment rune.

>it still seems creepy to you for some reason
Okay, so I've thought about this, and I think there's three options for what will happen to her at her audition
>Option 1: Possession of some kind; within the bonds of the scenario she has no identity, no set character, making her vulnerable.
>Option 2: She's getting slotted into a role in some sicko's fantasy. Whether he's a perv, a serial killer, or some kind of practitioner who is going to use her for sacrifice will be seen later
>Option 3: This is part of a summoning ritual/ sacrificial rite with some rule about 'the sacrifice must agree in his/her own words' and the script is to channel the conversation in that direction

It probably can be done to an extent, and there's nothing to say we can't have someone working on the house from the outside while we work on the inside.

Luring out a Legion class entity outside and into the Supertrap (if we have it) is a valid option.

There's not as much as you'd like. She was a full priestess and...that's it. The lack of information is a little telling. Usually there's a bit more, what temple they were at, if there was anything notable about their service, whom she trained, etc. This isn't the records of someone who lived ages ago, this was within your parent's lifetime. There should be more than 'She existed. The End.'

"That probably means trouble." Sana says when you explain your concern to her.

"Were you expecting anything less?" You say. The idea of getting a wrecking ball, covering it in Positive-Slime, and letting physics do the rest is sounding like a better and better plan by the second.

Time to see how the others have been doing. You call Sato.

"Hey man, how're you doing?" He asks.

"Pretty good, I've got a good idea on how screwed we are." You say. "How about you?"

"Yeah..." Sato says. "About that..."

"Well, turns out that yokai are really REALLY afraid of Oiwa and her Aspects. They don't even like saying her name. So, when we brought the subject up, they hissed in fear, and slammed the door in our faces...metaphorically and literarily." Sato says. "As the ancients say Ignorance is the safest shield, that works all but once...or something like that."

"Alright." You say. "So we've got nothing from them."

"Pretty much, yeah." Sato says. "Sorry."

"Not your fault. Did Akira behave himself?" You ask.

"Well, he's not happy and muttering a lot and I'm pretty sure that Rini, and Kali both heard the word 'cowards' more than once, but he's been good. Although I think if we don't get him some ghosts to go to town on, he'll explode."

"Yeah, well...I think that won't be a problem." You say.

"Alright, oh, Rini and her warren of bunnies are crashing here tonight." He said. "They've already taken over your room. Sorry. We've got a couch ready, or you can bunk with me or Akira."

"Thanks for the warning." You say. "See you in a bit." You hang up.

"So," Sana says, finishing up her dinner, and looking at you expectantly to pay the bill. "We heading back?"

"Yeah, but I want to stop by Sachiko's first." You say.

"Okay." She says.

You pay and get on the train. As you bump along the rail you look at Sana. "Hey, when's your audition? I think I might come along, you know, for moral support."

She smiles at you. "It's in a few days. I'll let you know. Thanks!" She sighs. "You know, I'd be glad if you all came. The director's a perv, the producer's got a creep vibe to him, and that girl I mentioned before is freaky. Having my own set of bodyguards might be helpful."

You arrive back in the Reject Zone, see Sana back to her apartment, and then head to the shrine. You knock on the door and the old Kuei-Jin opens the door.

"Kali not here." He says. "Ur Exorcist no bring trouble of Shard of Hating Goddess here."

"I want to see Sachiko." You say.

"Priestess watching soap on box. Told not disrupt." He says.

"I'll just be a moment." You say.

"I understand, Ur Exorcists must speak to priestess." He steps aside.

"Do you have any plans?" You ask.

"Told guard door, guarding door." He says.

"Okay." You say and head into Sachiko's temple.

She's watching soaps on her couch. She honestly...kind of looks a little lonely.

"Oh." She rolls her eyes when she sees you. "It's you. Whaddya want?"

"I'm interested in this miko, I was wondering if you knew anything?" You ask as you show her the data on Kayako's mother on your phone.

Considering that the previous options are; possession, creepy fantasy (which may or may not involve lotion), and some sort of ritual, I think it's plausible.

Sachiko's eyes go wide and she drops the can she was drinking out of.

"Yeah, I know stuff about her." She nods. "I was at her trial."

"Trial?"

"Well, hearing is more accurate I suppose." She says. "We already knew that she was guilty, and the only question was to determine how severe the punishment was going to be."

"Punishment for what?" You ask.

She frowns and adjusts her shoulders. "It's...not something I can discuss. I would be breaking agreements and vows if I did. I'm already saying a lot more than I should have, and don't play the guessing game with me. I don't want to do that."

"Alright, well what can you tell me?" You ask. "It could help us with the ghost we have to take on. You know that evil ghost house, and the spirit Kayako? This is her mother."

"Ohhhh, yeah...yeah that explains a lot." Sachiko bites her lip. "Okay, Kayako's mother, whose name I am no longer to speak, was doing something that she really shouldn't have been doing. What's more was that she was doing it in a very dangerous way. So, there was an unofficial hearing. Her punishment was that her title and name were stripped from the priesthood, and she was banished from the temples."

(cont)
>>
>>31859690
"That's not as helpful as you think." You say.

"I know." She sighs. "Okay, I was 9 when this happened, so I don't remember much. Kayako wasn't there...I think that was a serious issue actually." She says, her eyes going upward in recollection. "She wasn't there and that was a problem, a big one." She shrugs and then gestures with her finger. "I think I know what I can do to help, and keep to my oath."

She gets up and goes into her shrine, and comes back with an old scroll. "This is a loan, you got it? And if there's so much as a hint of slime on it, you'll get an arrow enema. Get it?"

"Got it."

"Good." She hands you the scroll. "I don't know if it'll help, or if that stuff is as real as your stuff is...but I'm far less of a doubter these days."

"How do you happen to have this scroll?" You ask.

"It's not something that's uncommon." She says. "You'll find one of those in most shrines of this size, and bigger. Still, treat it nice."

You nod.

"Now, get off my couch and go back to your factory. I want to finish my show." She says.

"Thanks Sachiko." You say, as you leave you give the old Keui-Jin a nod, and look the scroll over. It says 'On the Ritual of Exorcism of the Foulest Humors'

You head back across the street, and open the door.

Flashing lights, thumping music, large amounts of bubbles, and the sounds of laughter, hooting, and the smell of freely flowing liquor.

You close the door.

You open the door again.

The rabbit girls are having a rave in your home. The music, you now recognize, is a techno/dubstep remix of the 'Ghostbuster's Theme.' You think you see Star crowd surfing, Sato talking to a group of young looking women in skimpy clothing, and Akira in a dark corner with a bottle.

You close the door again.

You open it again.

The image has not changed.

"Oh, good." He says. "It would be nice to actually do some ghostBUSTING, wouldn't it?"

You hear a cheer, and you see that Kali is in the party as well. She's singing karaoke, 80's karaoke.

"We're going to go kick a lot of ghost ass later, including an evil house."

You take another drink. You're not sure what this stuff is, but it's really good...and strong.

"And believe me, this house deserves it." You pass the bottle back.

Akira takes another drink. "So, that scroll a magic spell or something?" He drinks again and passes it.

You take another drink. "Dunno, but it's on loan, so we have to be careful with it." You pass the bottle back.

Akira nods as he takes another drink. "You wanna be able to 'pray' with Sachiko, huh?" He smiles. "Well, I'll drink to violence, and I'll drink to sex." He hands you the bottle.

"Here here!" You say, and have another drink

You wake up in your own bed. Your head is pounding. You stagger out into the factory floor and see the wreckage.

It's not that bad. Get a broom, some paper towels, and a couple of garbage bags, and the place will be back up and running in no time.

Star is sleeping, circled up in a beanbag chair, covered in streamers, glitter, and looking all the world like a 80s party queen at rest.

You look into Sato's room. He's also passed out, handcuffed to the bed, lipstick and hickeys covering his upper body. His lower body thankfully covered by the sheets. There's a feather boa draped over him.

Akira is sleeping, sitting up, on the couch. He's mumbling a song. You vaguely remembering you, him, belting out 'Wheel In The Sky' last night, among other vague memories.

Yurei is out of her Chyme and corporeal. She's sleeping with her head in Akira's lap.

You see Akria slowly open his eyes, and he looks at you, then down at Yurei. He gives a little 'whatever' shrug, and goes back to sleep.

You see the scroll, safely place on a bookshelf, out of the way.

You don't know about other forms of exorcism, but right now, the only thing you need to banish evil...is coffee.

- - -
Across the city, She sees you. You have her book with you after all, a small fraction of a faction of what she is...but it is a piece of her none the less.

So she knows you are coming, and she knows you have defeated one of her 'Sisters.'

So...she prepares.
