You are... Parasite. Yes. This word is true. You are mass of fungal cells, recently awoken in your host. You are that, but something more. As sense of self. Awareness. Intellect. This is true but also not true. A matter for another time. Other matters push such notions aside, namely a destination. Brain. Barely escaping the lumbering white beast, losing half your mass, you found a change in yourself.

The burning toxic flesh of the beast no longer harms as much. You decided your time within the nurturing flesh of muscle was over. Too much noise and alarm. Seeking sanctuary you shuffled inside a new meat, but not before leaving behind a stalwart vanguard. The word gently rose from the seething depth of your frantic will. Nerve, a path to the brain. This meat sung and surged. Delicious sugars helped repair your ranks. What will you do now?

You resist devouring the abundant sugar swirling around you and focus on studying your surroundings, but slowing your growth. How curious to look at one’s food before eating it. A good thing you did. You gently experiment with the singing neurons. At first you fumble with the touch of your cells, their basic hunger searing the cells alive. You watch the disruption of the song ripple through the network of cells, shifting and darting along a new path. The similar tartness your earlier feast begins to taint the atmosphere and causes the pressure to increase. You move your mass away slightly and try again.

This time you are better able to prevent the death of the host neuron, but still after prolonged contact it dies again. The third time yields success, allowing brief contact before the cell begins to falter. You can interact with the neurons for a short time allowing you to slip between the axons without too much damage. You revel in your new trick before turning back to the matter at hand.

Change. Evolution. This is a good thing, though it takes effort. Food. Time. Lucky food is abundant here. Again you prevent the growth of your horde and focus on the fragile nerves. Gently and delicately you twist and probe along the cell, carefully manipulating the membrane of a single cell to fit within the myriad protein gates along the cell’s surface.

With a sudden surge contact is made and a flood of something, fills your consciousness. Alien feelings and senses you have no word for blot out your mind. Reeling you pull back and quickly sever the link. The noise fades and the neural cell dies, but something lingers. A thought.

“Escape. Infected. Run. Helpless. Fear . Scream”

These words are not your own. Something from your host, but not food. Strange, but pointless. What does it matter of the fear of the Host. It is yours, but this new thing. More. Your entire mass quivers with new energy at this new food and the feelings of the host, quickly rampaging and damaging the surrounding tissue. Alarm proteins surge, tissues surge and swell, and the brackish scent seeps into your sanctuary. Curious. You quickly consider your options.

The damage has been done and the local tissue is inflamed, much like your brazen attack on the muscle tissue of your incubation. It takes tremendous will to corral the wild cells of your mass into fleeing up the major nerve. You quickly leave behind a few chosen cells that burrow into the tissue and harden, solidifying your rear guard. As in the muscle, these cells lie dormant, waiting for your command to awaken and spread.

Your mass quickly whirls away from your damaging probe, leaving the nasty atmosphere behind. You catch a glimpse of white pseudopods press into the space but you quickly leave it behind. Your adaptation of reduced toxicity proves useful as you move quickly among the nerons. You are safe now, a familiar low thud shudders nearby, counter pointing the trilling song. You consider your options.

You have neglected your hunger for too long. The thought of tasting more memories lurks in the back of your mind, but not now. It kills too much of the host, alarms the host. No It must wait. You pulse the commands to your cells. Consume: Slow: Spread: Grow. The mass listens. It avoids killing any of the hosts cells, only feasting on the secreted sugars of the nerve tissue and occasional floods from the thudding mass somewhere deeper in the host. Yes. Growth is good. Avoiding the white beasts is good. You focus on taking stock of your mass. You are aware of a new thing. Number. You have a perception of the size of your mass while deciding the next course of action.

Safety is a fleeting thing. It is fortunate then that you have a long period of respite. You continue to hold back on consuming the local flesh, opting to feast on the local nutrients. Your growth is a fraction of what you could it could be, but still your numbers surge. You pour over the images you ripped from your host , strengthening your desire for more, but the consequences are still too strong. A twinge of alarm ripples through the mass. The upkeep of your current mass is consuming all the local nutrients. This branch of motor neuron is tapped out it seems. You have implanted sentries along the tissue you have infiltrated. They have gone to sleep, awaiting the command to wake and spread again. You grow restless. You filter through your options.

Expand. Grow. Mass. The time for caution is over. You are a parasite and this is your host. It is your domain. You will your cells to spread, burning tissue as you probe and burrow. A contingent of cells breaks back out into warm and fatty muscle tissue, bolstering your numbers. Growing along the nerve track a group of cells pushes up and finds a greater network of nerves, signing loudly and branching. To your surprise the mass that pushes deeper taps into something new. Breaching a wall of tissue a warm influx of salty fluid pours into the nerve. Your membranes twitch and bristle at this new food. Blood, somewhere deep in your consciousness tells you. This is a blood vessel. The thudding thing. Inside the conduit life and food surges, but also danger. You ponder your new territory and decide.

That looks like an artery, so the flow of blood will carry us further down the leg. We should stay away from the blood flow until we have some control in the nerves further up from the leg incase the host decides to cut his losses.

This host’s defenses are weak. This pleases your mass and nearly emboldens them. You are no ordinary parasite, blindly attacking and consuming the host, no. You hunger for something more. The danger of the blood is too much and the fatty tissue tells you nothing. The nerve tissue sings to you, claws at you, draws you towards the source. Yes, it is a good plan. Your mass draws away from your outpost and travels up the neural tract. The song increases and intensifies. You can taste the memories. If you had a mouth it would water.
