General rules:

There is a 10 minute voting period after each post. Non-contradictory votes will be combined as best as possible. There are occasional roles to keep things organic, but mostly it goes by voters choice. Unless specified otherwise, the best of 3 rolls is the result, and rolling high is good.

Write-ins for all votes or always welcome and encouraged. Put your own spin on it, suggest dialogue, add an addendum, or anything else. Just because some options specify to write in, doesn't mean that they aren't welcome for anything else. They may not all make it into the post or be altered to fit in, but I'll do my best to at least try to address the spirit of the write-in.

Very important or contentious votes may be redone in a stricter voting system as it comes up.

Combat is currently under revision and subject to change. Currently it works just like dialogue and other options.

[Just a note on battling. I don't think anyone was terribly impressed with the old system of basically emulating the video games. What we'll be trying today is basically treating battles in the same way as other votes. Some general strategies will be provided and the winning one will be selected. The timeframe between votes will vary a bit depending on what the vote was for. Non-contradictory addendums and votes will be included as best as possible, with vague or unclear stuff being asked to be revoted in a strict manner if there isn't a general consensus.

I am very open to other ideas or suggestions if this system has major issues. I'm hoping this will allow and encourage more improvisation on battling and less divisive constant revotes.

I'm admittedly pretty bad at knowing when things are being samefagged. If you believe a revote should be done or have questions, please don't hesitate to speak up.]

I think it should still be 5 minutes. It makes sense since battle ought to be as fast paced as we can manage.

Let's do this! You feel the words, but you don't shout them. Instead, you adjust your helmet so it's firmly in place, and take a determined, fighting position.

Clair smiles in a determined manner and says nothing as well. She doesn't have to be psychic to read your intent. You came here for a battle. You came to win a badge.

The lithe, pale girl with raven hair leans back. Her billowy dress clings to her legs as a ball floats in the air. You've just met her but feel you already know her very well thanks to both of you touring the others mind. She looks exhausted but visibly relieved.

The referee, who's been reading a book and not paying much attention, suddenly gets up. "Oh! Yes!" He coughs and stands officially. "Right. This will be a one on one match using three Pokemon each. Only the challenger may switch Pokemon. If either side speaks out loud during the match, they will given a warning. If they speak a second time, they will be disqualified. Any other type of communication is legal."

You nod in understanding. This gym match has been a long time coming. But your Pokemon have grown incredibly since the last gym, and you've learned a lot too. Your hands tremble in anticipation and excitement.

You want to win. You want to be the very best.

You want to be worth something.

"As soon as I wave this flag, the gym leader will throw out her first Pokemon and the match will commence. Are there any questions?" He raises his flag.

>None. You're ready
>Wait, you have a question (write-in)
>Try to use the helmet for something before the match (write-in)
>Something else

Pure ascetics? I love the regular old Pokeball. I deal with designers at my job and they've convinced me that the best designs should be able to be easily drawn by children and recognized. Not that the others can't really be, but I've come to love simple designs. I have a soft spot for Net and Nest balls though. Safari balls too.

>>
>>31894397

>>
So do you think this helmet will have problems with Devon since he is dark? I kind of wish we had tested it on him earlier just to be sure.
>>
>>31894484
... fuck, I didn't even think about that.
>>
>>31894484
Probably not, it's designed to allow for full access, a problem like that would be expected.
Now if there's electricity flying about and it shorts out then there's a problem.
>>
>>31894484
I shouldnt think so, it would give clair an unfair advantage over the most effective type matchup vs her psychics so I doubt the league would have allowed the use of these mind helmets if they didn't work on dark types. besides, we used one ok and we have a "dark" aura
>>
>>31894326
>>None. You're ready
LET DO DIS
>>
You nod. You're ready.

You consider sending dirty thoughts to Clair, but decided against it. You also make a mental note to do it on Robin after the match.

Robin. You still can't believe she's keeping a secret from you. You can't remember what it was though.

You shake your head. You can't think about that right now. You have a match to win. With a lifetime of practice, you stuff that uncomfortable truth away and focus on the task at hand.

Clair gives a flick of her hand and the levitating ball lands on the field. Her face show's clear concentration.

It's Gardevoir! You remember her as being protective of Clair in her head. It's a Psychic and...something type. Fairy?

Oddly enough, you do know this Pokemon's possible abilities thanks to studying them. Maybe will a little more study in that area, you'll be able to tell a Pokemon's ability or abilities by looking at it. You've read that some Pokemon can unlock a second or even third one with a lot of hard work, but that stuff is pretty advanced.

Gardevoir most likely has Synchronize, Trace, or Telepathy.

You have a lot of ideas, but end on using Trunks. You throw out the Pokeball and he appears, ready for action. His small wooden appendages click on the ground in anticipation. You can feel his thoughts. He likes his new form. He feels more powerful. He hopes he'll make you proud.

The arena is has several scattered, open shipping containers. Other than that, it's bare. You're glad for that. One gimmick is enough. You already have to fight the urge to talk.

Trunks has a lot of moves. As smart as Raistlin has shown himself to be, Trunks seems to have a gift for picking up moves.

Clair's eyes glow and Gardevoir beings to move. How will you start the match?

>Get close and aggressive with contact moves like Feint Attack, Horn Leech, Tackle and Astonish
>Start the match with offensive status effects. Things like Confuse Ray, Will-O-Wisp
>Start the match defensively. Growth, Leech Seed, and being ready to dodge

>>31896757

>>
You can see Gardevoir set up a psychic barrier that quickly fades. You know it's still there though. It was Reflect.

You 'tell' Trunks to use Confuse Ray. His reaction time blows you away. He fires it off and it goes right through the barrier. Gardevoir is confused.

Clair blinks rapidly for a second, then looks normal. You wonder what that was about.

You don't have time to think about it though. Your thoughts are all over the place. As Trunks closes the distance, he shoots a Will-O-Wisp. A burn develops on her, the on Trunks. Damnit! Synchronize! You take advantage of the confusion and press with Feint Attack just as she's trying to use Double Team. Trunks is able to land a solid blow.

Clair looks mad. Her eyes glow again and Gardevoir used Light Screen. You have Trunks use a quick Tackle and hit hard with Horn Leech when she's off balance. Combined with the confusion, she's having a hard time using moves and avoiding damage.

Gardevoir teleports back and fires a Shadow Ball, hitting Trunks in the gut. Even though it was only one, it hit really hard. He closes the distance once again and lands a quick Astonish. His shout causes Gardevoir to flinch before she can use another move.

Both Pokemon look roughed up. Clair's facial expression shows she has a plan. The confusion seems to be wearing off. It might last for a few more seconds.

You can feel Trunks' burn. It doesn't hurt you, but you're aware of it. At least Gardevoir has one too.

>Don't let up! Stay close, hit hard and fast with a rapid rotation of Astonish, Feint Attack, and Tackle
>Now's the time for your new move, Phantom Force (d100)

Leech seed would be great to get off, but any physical move would be a total waste of time while he has a burn. If we switch, we can at least bring him in later to confuse and leech seed.

You concentrate on one move. Phantom Force! You have to stop yourself from shouting it.

Trunks vanishes just before a Shadow Ball explodes where he was standing. You can't sense him anymore.

Clair and Gardevoirs eyes both scan the arena in the exact same pattern. Clair regains control and her eyes glow. Gardevoir clasps her hands together and a pink ball of light goes up into the sky.

Was that Wish? If you remember right, Wish heals a Pokemon after a short wait. Clever girl.

Clair smiles, but you see that her eyes are heavy set and her head droops a little.

WHAM! Trunks appears and hits Gardevoir with the power of Phantom Force. His burn and the Reflect that's up prevent it form hitting as hard as it could. You don't doubt that she'd be out under normal circumstances. You're really glad he pulled it off though. Who knows what would happen if it went wrong?

The burn is wearing both Pokemon down. As it stands now, a very strong hit could probably knock either of them out. The only problem is that Gardevoir will probably heal a lot in a few seconds.

Trunks feels proud to pull off such a move, but disappointed that he didn't knock Gardevoir out of the fight.

>If she'll heal, so will you! Leech Seed and Horn Leech!

Look at Trevenant's potential abilities.
Frisk, Natural Cure, & Harvest on occasion.

We don't know what things Gardi could be holding, so it's probably not Frisk.

Which leaves Natural Cure as the most likely ability. Trunks might lose the burn if we switch him out.

You have Trunks use Leech Seed as Gardevoir shoots another Shadow Ball. The powerful Ghost type move his Trunks in the head, knocking him over.

With your connection to Trunks, you feel his lights flicker for a second. A sense of relief washes over you as the Leech Seed restores a little bit of health. He was very close to being knocked out.

The Wish floats down to Gardevoir, healing her. You act quickly and retrieve Trunks just as she's loosing another Shadow Ball. Just as he's going inside his Pokeball, you feel the Burn he had wear off.

You throw out Zappy Dan. Despite having no typing resistance to Shadow Ball, he doesn't seem to be that effected by it.

You feel Dan's general apathy. While he'd like to win, he doesn't have the same animalistic intensity that Trunks had.

He's in control of his body.

Gardevoir and Clair take a defensive stance. They're sizing you up.

Leech Seed and the Burn take their toll. Zappy Dan heals slightly from the Leech Seed, but you also feel a burn starting to develop on him.

NOT this. Dan's a baller, but we've danced around in each others heads. I think we can respect how messed up she is in that this should be a fair battle. If it was that Ponyta guy, yeah, but we win this by being status effect heavy and annoying.

Gardevoir and Clair both have the same strained expression. She's so in sync with her Pokemon. The psychic connection helps, but you can see the trust they have for each other.

Dan trusts you too. You feel it. You also feel that he had some doubts when you evolved him twice. That hurts you feelings until you dig deeper. He felt happy when you helped him get control though. Dan likes how much you trust him to overcome difficult situations. He seems to feel like he needs to look out for you now.

Gardevoir waves her hands at Dan. A psychic construct of a prison surrounds Dan and fades away. What was that?

You have Dan fire his Mirror Shot. Light focuses on one point on his outer shell and a sudden flash of grey light goes from him to Gardevoir. It hits her hard.

'Don't let up!' You instruct him to unleash as much electricity as he can manage on her.

Dan doesn't use Thunderbolt though. He can't for some reason. It's not because of a lack of control either, it's something else. It must have been that move Clair used.

'Imprison,' you hear her voice in your head. 'It keeps your Pokemon from using any move that Gardevoir knows.' Her voice sounds strained. She's really pushing herself for this fight.

Gardevoir must know Thunderbolt.

Dan doesn't miss a lot of time though. He fires of a Thundershock instead. Gardevoir is caught off guard and isn't able to roll with the blow.

Gardevoir is looking very worn. The Burn and Leech Seed make it worse. Reflect has faded, and Light Screen is fading now too. Clair doesn't seem to notice.

The next few seconds are too important for a general strategy. You need to act quick and decisively.

Clair's gaze goes back to Gardevoir. Once again, Gardevoir uses Wish.

Your plan is like Zappy Dan himself. Simple, clear, and effective. It's Mirror Shot.

Light focuses on a single point on Dan, then instantly connects a line of light into Gardevoir. Clair whimpers as Gardevoir goes limp and falls over. It's like she felt that.

A flag waves off to the side of your vision. "Gardevoir is unable to battle!" You see a red X appear near Clair's side of the large monitor.

She manually retrieves Gardevoir instead of using psychic powers.

You can hear Vance's surprise through the helmet. She's right, he is 'loud.' You didn't even mean to listen.

Clair inhales slowly, exhales, and uses her powers to toss out another Pokeball.

It's Solrock!

Solrock hits Dan with a rushing vortex of fire. The fire doesn't disapate though. It stays all around Dan. You won't be able to retrieve him through those flames. That must be Fire Spin.

You sense out to Dan, he's calm, even if the move is hurting. You order him to use Supersonic. The wooshing flames surrounding him do nothing to interfere with the high pitched screech that Dan emits.

Solrock's beady little eyes spin. The Wish that Gardevoir used before you knocked it out floats into Solrock. Since he wasn't hurt, it was wasted.

You follow up with a Thunderwave. Solrock and Clair try to do something before you let it out, but instead Solrock just floats into one of the shipping containers. It connects easily.

Clair shakes her head. She looks like she's regained her senses even if Solrock hasn't. She must be able to shut it off you guess.

Firespin is still surrounding Dan. Yo can't pull him back for now

You don't give them time to recover. Knowing what you're thinking, Dan fires off a Mirror Shot. The light hits Solrock hard, causing it to be blown back a bit as it levitates.

Solrock can't move due to paralysis. Dan hits him again. it's a powerful blow. This time Solrock is able to shoot off what you can only assume is Flamethrower. It misses. Solrock must be blinded from the flashes of light.

Dan isn't completely dominating though. The intense Fire Spin is wearing him down.

Dan hits Solrock again. You're impressed with how tough it is. She's really earned her reputation.

Clair levitates a Pokeball. You think she's going to recall Solrock, but she doesn't do that yet. Instead, you see Solrock rush at Dan and begin to glow.

Why does that glow look so familiar?

No!

Solrock explodes directly under Dan. He raises up then comes crashing down as the Fire Spin still surrounds him. It fades soon after, leaving Dan in terrible shape. Even with his powerful defense and type resistance, that hurt. Electricity sparks off of him as he wavers. You can feel it through your connection too.

"Solrock is unable to battle!" The referee waves another flag and another X appears on Clair's side of the screen.

Clair isn't doing much better than Dan. She retrieves her Solrock. A bead of sweat goes down her face.

Another Pokeball comes flying from her side of the arena. It opens to reveal Drowzee

Having an unlimited movepool is a novelty that people aren't bored of yet. Stats are pretty cool but they aren't as tangible. Once we have the sick movesets we want, we'll probably start training stats more.
>>
>>31902021
Being able to train whatever stat we want is a novelty too. Admittedly, less of one than broken movesets.

Dan doesn't have much left in him. You decide to let him do one last move before resting. Explosion!

You check to see how he feels about that. He's actually happy. He wants to rest up. You're glad he's so apathetic.

Small arcs of electricity spark off him as he begins to glow.

Clair's eyes grow wide for just a second. You think you see a blood vessel popping out.

Drowzee quickly moves it's hands and a protective barrier shapes up around it.

You try to get Dan to cancel his move, but it's too late. A shimmer of light goes off of him, followed by a powerful explosion. The shipping crates both go flying back nearly off of the arena.

As the dust clears, you can see Drowzee's Protect fade away. It's completely unharmd. There's a wide shallow crater in the arena though.

Dan is no longer conscious. He seems content as he sleeps.

Who will you send against Drowzee next?

You want to get his health back. Trunks will need it if he'll win this one. He expertly lands a Leech Seed on Drowzee.

Drowzee uses Psych Up. She's pumping up his special attack power.

She's not taking Trunks seriously! You and him are on the exact same wavelength. You almost feel his feet as you have him charge with Horn Leech.

Drowzee turns to Trunks and uses Hypnosis. Trunks' charge slows to a crawl until he finally stops right at Drowzee. His eyes close and he begins to drift. He's not entirely out yet. You can feel him at the brink of consciousness. Before he's completely out of it, He hits Drowzee with the Horn Leech and you can feel the energy flow back into him. Leech Seed gives him a little more.

Trunks has healed a lot of health, but he's asleep and helpless in front of Drowzee.

Clair wipes sweat from her forehead.

'Wake up! Wake up Trunks!' You shout at him inside his own head. He needs to wake up.

Drowzee uses Nasty Plot. You can recognize that move on sight. You really don't like where this is going. Leech Seed drains him of health some more. He's already looking very low, but neither he or Clair seem concerned about it.

'Wake up and hit Drowzee with everything you have!' You need him up now! You reach into his mind to see if you can do anything.

You see his dream. He's in a mansion in a small hallway. Time passes by rapidly. Day and night go by and the only time it slows down is when a young boy comes by to water and talk to him. He's a houseplant! Wait, you recognize this place. This is the haunted mansion where you first found him. He's an actual potted plant in this dream.

Suddenly the dream distorts then disappears. You're back in the real world and you see Drownzee absorbing a black ball of light he pulled from Trunks. He ate the dream! He's looking healed too!

Trunks lays on the arena floor. The referee waves a flag

"Phantumpt is unable to battle!"

Your mind feels blank for a moment. You shake your head and focus.

Clair's breathing is shallow. The longer this match goes, the more draining it is on her.

You can worry about that after. You need to win this. Drowzee recovered a lot of health and pumped up his Special Attack. You can't afford any big mistakes. You need to choose your last Pokemon.

>Devon! He hits hard and fast, and has Early Bird to help with

Honestly looking at Drowzee's movepool, it doesn't have much that's really effective against a dark type. Sure it has a couple of fighting moves, but its been buffing its special attack so at worst we'd be evenly super effective attacking each other.
>>
>>31904062
Can we do that?
Create hybrid moves?
>>
>>31904062
Those don't seem like they'd be easy to combo. Something like Leech Seed + Leech Horn should be possible without spending forever on it, since the moves are similar, but that? That's gotta be way hard.

That

That would be pretty cool. Edgy as fuck, but cool.

Yeah Gobble mentioned it before. It would combine the effects of 2 moves, but make both moves half as strong. However, it would make for some creative stuff like, crunch into fire blast for a 100% to hit fire blast with a slightly weaker crunch preceeding it.

You send out Devon. You can see him, but you can't sense him. He barks and bares his fangs at Drowzee in anticipation. As a Houndoom, he's really intimidating.

You almost open your mouth to ask about why you can't sense him. They have to have some sort of Dark type workaround.

You're aware of Judy nearby for the first time since the match started. She presses a button on the machine. The lights flicker and then dim very slightly, and a purple eye falls over Devon. You don't think anyone else can see it, but you're able to sense Devon with the machine.

"Getting the device to mimic Miracle Eye took a lot of hard work," Judy says. "It won't affect your Pokemon against Drowzee. Just concentrate on your match."

Good advice. You focus on the arena.

Before the match started, you bluffed in your head that you didn't teach Devon any Dark type moves. If you have him use Dark Pulse with all of his power, it might catch them off guard and take Drowzee out. Of course, that hinges on if you think Clair has been using her powers to read your next move or not.

Open up with flamethrower. She should think that Devon doesn't know dark moves, so when she opens with protect, we'll show our hand if we throw down dark pulse. We want to wait and hit drowzee after it drops its defense

You have Devon shoot off as strong a Flamethrower as he can without planting his feet. You want him ready to adapt to anything she pulls. Clair's eyes glow and Drowzee is already putting up Protect. She must have been suspecting something stronger. The flames lick around the bubble and leave Drowzee unharmed. Leech Seed drains him.

Drowzee looks back to Clair. She nods and he starts charging at Devon.

Devon fires off a quick Ember and keeps his distance. Drowzee stops in his tracks and uses Protect for the second time in a row. You can see visible surprise on Clair's face.

You've studied moves like this a little after that fight you lost. You know that the more you use Protect in a row, the more likely it is to fail. At least, you're pretty sure that's how it works. Using it twice is supposed to be considered a gamble.

Leech Seed continues to take it's toll.

Clair exerts one last bit of effort. 'It was a good match Kat. You should retrieve your Pokemon.' Even in your head, her voice trembles. After she gives you that message, she visibly relaxes in her chair.

Whoops, made one text layer invisible by accident. Here's it fixed.

She still has to take the damage.

And expecting Bite or Crunch I would have Counter ready.

And that Leech Seed isn't healing.

Doesn't work on dark type pokemon. Like Devon.

You don't surrender. No way. Your Pokemon worked hard to get you here.

Do it!

Devon and you are in sync. You both want to do the exact same thing. You can almost feel it with him. Your legs dig into the ground and you summon up your inner strength.

Clair's eyes shoot open. Drowzee stops in his tracks and puts his arms in a forward position. Charging at you was a bluff! They're using Dazzling Gleam!

Devon fires his Dark Pulse as hard as he can. Drowzee just barely gets Dazzling Gleam off in time, and the two beams collide. Devon is strong, but Drowzee pumped his Special Attack and Fairy beats Dark. Devon is losing ground.

>Encourage Devon! He can do it! You believe in him
>Join his mind fully and push as hard as you can. You're in this together
>You can't let that hit Devon. Call him back

That reminds me, we should ask Clair to make us forget that Robin has a secret. Or she's going to obsess over it and blow up.

Thinking about it, it's like we're briefly playing a digimon tamers quest rather than pokemon.

This is a lost cause...
>>
>>31905125
It's been shown that stronger moves like Dark Pulse and flamethrower require Devon to 'dig in' in order to use them at full power. At this point if we tried to dodge, we'd probably get hit before we could move.
>>
>>31905034
>Join his mind fully and push as hard as you can. You're in this together
Where in a Shounen now.
>>
>>31905149
yeah...Clair should just surrender
>>
>>31905166
Fire and dodge at the same time? Hell, if he has to dig in not digging in might push him back with recoil. Angle that slightly and he's good to go.
>>
That feeling when its 4:30 in the morning, but you don't want to go to sleep till the quest finishes. Ugh.
>>
>>31905228
Destiny is the only one allowed to rocket around the battlefield. A giant dog doing it is too weird.
>>
>>31905311
Also, the physics on that are a little weird. Brace yourself so your beam doesn't move you, then, as your beam is firing, try to unbrace yourself in such a way that you dodge an oncoming beam.
>>
You always thought this sort of thing was a dumb cliche for people that were lucky enough not to know that believing and wishing doesn't actually do anything. Maybe that's still true, but you don't care right now. Devon is your first Pokemon. He's loyal, strong, and brave. He wants to win. He wants to be worth having you as a trainer, and you want to be worth being his trainer. You'll do whatever it takes to be worthy.

You don't think. You just act. You let yourself slip into Devon. You feel every beat of his heart in your chest. You feel the ground on your feet as you strain every muscle and fiber in your being to push back.

A stronger, more powerful beam explodes from Devon's mouth. Dirt, light, and darkness all fly in the air. You can barely see what's happening, but you can feel it.

You lose your sense of self.

The lights in the building flicker on and off as you force every fiber in your being to push. The lights in your head begin to flicker too. You think you can hear yourself screaming. The force in front of you is strong, but you can feel yourself grow stronger.

Nobody is going to hurt Kat. Nobody is going to beat Devon. You overtake your enemy and blow it away. You don't even see it go down, but you know it did. That's good, your transformation didn't feel complete and it's already fading.

The danger passes. Your head spins and you need to lie down. You don't know who or what you are anymore. You don't know where you are anymore.

Dammit, seems like leaning on the console is winning, but backing out or laying down would be much more interesting for the story...
