Characters and Gunpla: http://pastebin.com/tNr0mtYH

You are JACK FOULKE, an amateur Gunpla Fighter with dreams to make your own mark on the Gunpla battle scene!

You are currently slated to fight Team Behemoth, who's known for bringing Mobile Armors to their fights.

"Hey, what rank are they in the school, then?" You ask Karen.

"Last I checked, I believe they were ranked 12th."

"So, um, this might be a dumb question, but if we beat them in this tourney, would we rank up?"

"You know..." Karen blinks. "It usually doesn't happen much, but because this is an officially recognized Bandai event... I might be able to convince the school board that this would be a legitimate battle."

"Yeah, and if we do lose, what's the worst that can happen? Be bumped down to last place?" Amy grins.

"Yeah... thanks for reminding us of that." You sigh.

"Hey, you guys ready to lose, or what?" You hear someone almost sneer. You see your opponents on the opposite end of the table. Yeah, they were definitely from your school.

"All right, set down your Gunpla and GP Bases!" The referee announces. You and the other battlers do so.

And you wince when you see two Gelgoogs and a goddamn Val Varo. Of course it had to be a Val Varo, not a Mobile Armor with obvious weaknesses like the Big Zam or Elmeth.

"Oh, this might be troublesome." Karen frowns.

"They're fighting us with a giant lobster?" Amy raises an eyebrow.

"Amy, have you ever seen any of the UC side series?" You look at your partner.

"Ummmm, does anything after Wing count?"

You just shake your head.

BEGINNING PLAVSKY PARTICLE DISPERSAL

FIELD: SPACE STATION

Your three mobile suits spawn in a space field, with a large asteroid space station located in the middle of the map. It would at least provide you with some cover.

"Okay, we need a plan of attack before we proceed." Karen says.

>Focus on taking out the Gelgoogs first. Without MS support the Val Varo is a sitting duck.

>Focus on taking out the Gelgoogs first. Without MS support the Val Varo is a sitting duck.
The Val Varo is actually not the best unit for space combat, ironically. It's actually best in the lunar environment that it was used in during 0083. In zero-G we're just as mobile as it, if not as fast, and it can't use its plasma leaders as effectively without something to lodge them in. If we stay out of its path we should do reasonably well.

"We'll focus on taking out the Gelgoogs first." You say. "The Val Varo may be big and scary, but even MAs are vulnerable without MS support."

"Good idea." Karen nods. "Though I suggest we get to cover."

The three of you boost towards the central space station. You detach your Balls to give yourself an extra set of eyes and you keep a close eye on your radar screen. Sure enough, you get a BIG contact moving in.

"I got it on radar, and it's coming in FAST." You warn.

Fortunately, since it seems the Val Varo is going full speed, it wouldn't be able to turn very well. You and your teammates quickly boost to the side so it wouldn't be able to bring its main weapons to bear on you.

However, you notice something odd on your visual sensors. You zoom in and you see two large bulges on the top of the Val Varo, but it's not until pink beam shots begin lancing out that you realize that it's the two Gelgoogs, hanging on to the Val Varo like a giant wakeboard.

"Clever bastards." You scowl.

>>
>>32028127
You boost as fast as you can, making a few erratic maneuvers here and there so you don't make yourself too easy a target. Apparently, it's enough, considering the Gelgoogs fail to even come close to hitting any of you. You take a quick look back to see the Val Varo zoom past, no doubt to set up for another high speed pass.

"This is going to be tough. The Val Varo is way faster than any of your suits." You grumble. "It'll probably just keep circling us all day and take potshots at us until they get lucky."

"Well, from the looks of it, it's circling in a somewhat predictable pattern." Karen says as her Overflag ducks behind cover as the Val Varo whips by again, its Gelgoog riders showering you with more inaccurate beam rifle fire. "Maybe we can try ambushing it."

"Well, I got my beam rifle and my Balls, and Amy can put her scythe into rifle mode. If we concentrate our fire as it passes, we stand of chance of knocking out the Gelgoogs, or at least separating them from the VV." You say.

"Well, I do have a sort of crazy idea..." Amy says.

"Like?"

"Well, I can load a blank round into my gunscythe, and use it to launch either you or Karen at the big red lobster thing as it passes. It should give you a big enough speed boost to intercept it in flight."

"That sounds crazy."

"Got it!" Both girls affirm and jet off out of sight.

Alright, Jack, it's time to step up. The Val Varo passes by a couple more times, its Gelgoogs showering random areas of the station with beam fire. However, you have to resist the urge to return fire. Your Balls quietly track the moving mobile armor as well, as if they were itching to open fire, too.

"Okay! We're ready to go!" Amy says.

"All right!" You grin as you raise your beam rifle and unlock your Balls' weapons. The next time the Val Varo circles around, you open fire with your beam rifle while your Balls unleash all their dakka.

Unfortunately, the Val Varo is simply going too fast for you to draw an accurate bead on it, and you don't score any major hits. However, your balls do much better, scoring numerous direct hits on the giant mobile armor with their weapons. However, at this distance, most of their hits simply bounce off the Val Varo's armor, but it succeeds in forcing the Gelgoogs to hunker down, preventing them from shooting.

Then there's a loud WHUMP as Amy's rifle fires, and you see the Obsidian Overflag jet out into space, arms outstretched forward like a professional diver.

>Actually, that was sort of a screwup on my part. I sort of assumed it was correctly linked.

Well, Karen's maneuver is partly successful. Her Overflag slams into one of the Gelgoogs, sending both her and Gelgoog spinning off into the space. The Gelgoog tries to bring its beam rifle into line, only to have the barrel sliced off, so it defaults to its heat hawk.

Meanwhile, the Val Varo, still at full speed, can't decelerate or change direction to assist so it boosts to circle around the station again while Karen battles the Gelgoog.

This was bad. Even if Karen did win, she'd be a sitting duck out there in front of the Val Varo.

You see the familiar red shape blasting around, this time making a beeline straight for Karen. Your sensors begin shrieking warnings of energy buildup, and you can see the Val Varo's twin mega beam cannons charging. You're pretty sure not even Karen's anti-beam coated blades could parry something like that.

You pull the trigger while your Balls and Amy add to the mix.

>>
>>32029121
A storm of rifle, autocannon, and beam fire lances out at the Val Varo, and this time, the volley is punishing. Your Balls' autocannons and Amy's rifle manage to strike the Gelgoog trying to take cover, and knock it off the Mobile Armor. You take a deep breath and fire your own shot, and you see the pink beam lance straight through the Gelgoog's check, causing it to explode brilliantly.

The storm of fire also causes the Val Varo pilot to panic and he fires off his beam cannons prematurely. Karen breaks off seconds before the spot where she was, and what was left of her opponent, are vaporized. The Val Varo boosts again out of sight.

"Good shooting, the both of you!" Karen says proudly as she jets back.

"Good work taking out that Gelgoog." You say. "Now it's just the Val Varo left."

"But... where did it go?" Karen wonders.

"Um... GUYS." Amy points outward. "IT'S COMING RIGHT AT US!"

You all turn and sure enough, the Val Varo, instead of making a pass, is rocketing directly at you.

The Val Varo sees you approaching and deploys its giant lobster claws in an attempt to stop you. However, it misjudges the extra momentum Amy's rifle gave you shoot past its arms before they can stop you. Yelling an improvised battle cry, you shove your beam saber forward and stab the mobile armor directly through its front plating.

The mobile armor then crashes directly into the station, jolting you as you try to keep a grip on your stuck beam saber. Your Balls then spin around on your shoulder mounts and start blasting away at the Val Varo point blank. This close, you can see the armor visibly begin to warp and deform.

The mobile armor begins to rumble again as its engines start power up again. Meanwhile, Amy and Karen try to close in to melee distance to attack the Val Varo while it's still vulnerable.

You try as hard as you can, but you're only able to pull the beam saber a few feet before the mobile armor lurches again and lifts off from the station. Amy and Karen try to close in, but you see four large pods deploy from the Val Varo's underbelly. If you remember correctly, those were its plasma leaders, devices meant to emit a powerful energy field to disable mobile suits. If they touched down, they were sure to knock out Karen and Amy's Gunpla.

Your shot is dead on, spearing through one of the plasma leaders and causing it to explode. Unfortunately, your Balls and Amy fail to score any solid hits, while Karen slashes the one in front of her in half and continues upward towards the Val Varo, which is already trying to accelerate away.

That still leaves two plasma leaders, which is still enough to hit you and Amy if you don't move RIGHT NOW.

You see Amy jet away in time, and you try to engage your boosters as well, but nothing happens. You glance at your status screen.

ERROR. ENGINE FAILED TO START. REBOOTING SYSTEM.

Shit.

You see the plasma leaders powering up and you wince. There's no way you can avoid them.

Suddenly, your view shakes rapidly and your suit starts spinning in space. Confused you glance at your screen and realize what happened. Your two Balls rammed your GM to knock it clear of the plasma leaders. You see both Balls give you one last, almost wistful look before the leaders activate. The Balls shudder as high voltage electricity courses through them. Their eye optics flicker and go dead, and both machines float lifelessly in space.

"Jack! JACK!"

You're shaken back into to reality when Amy's Deathscythe comes up right next to you.

"Are you all right?" She asks.

"Y-yeah." You nod. You check your status screen again and see that your boosters are now working correctly again.

"Listen. Karen's stuck on the big lobster thing, but I'm not sure if she can handle it herself." Amy says, reloading her rifle. "The lobster thingie still hasn't reached full speed yet, so there's still a chance to catch up to it. Are you ready?"

"Yeah." You nod.

"Good." Amy's rifle fires and your GM is sent flying through space again. You hit your boosters at full power and you see the red speck in the distance grow larger and larger. You can barely make out the Overflag, it's sword arms stuck into the Val Varo's back. The mobile armor meanwhile is bucking and jinking in an effort to shake her off. Its giant lobster claws ineffectually trying to reach around to grab her.

You fire a few ranging shots and adjust your aim accordingly. You're almost right on top of the mobile armor when you fire off your last shot. You see the beam penetrate the Val Varo's right engine nacelle, causing a massive explosion that incinerates about a quarter of the massive mobile armor. If the pilot didn't know you were there, he certainly did now.

As your inertia continues to carry you towards the Val Varo, it spins around to face you lobster claws extended and beam cannons charging.

Well, not necessarily.

Felini didn't have any particle hax and he was still dismantling Aila up until they activated her highly illegal totally-not-the-Berserk-system thing. I honestly think we would have won the tournament easily if he went Full Tryhard when constructing his suit because he was just that fucking skilled, good thing he was too bro for that.

I think the Meijin also didn't have any particle hax (unless the Trans Am on the Exia Amazing counts), he just had the most bleeding edge suits imaginable and the skills to pay the bills.

Then again we'll probably never reach that level where we can just casually solo anything through raw badassery, because not even the protagonists ever got gud enough to not rely on particle hax to stand up to guys like that, so in practice you're correct I guess.

In Gundam, a suit being a command unit usually just means it has better sensors and thrusters than the normal version. C3I tends to get neglected with mobile suits. Probably because it's not as impressive to look at. As I recall, some of the suits in X and Turn A had it, though.

You stab your beam saber right into one of the Val Varo's beam cannon barrels, while Karen drives both her arm blades into where the reactor presumably be. The Val Varo shudders and crackles with energy, cuing the both of you to take off.

Seconds later, the Val Varo explodes into a cloud of dust.

BATTLE ENDED

"Team Obsidian is the winner!" The referee announces.

There's a lot of cheering, and you turn to see that your battle had attracted quite a crowd. You were so engrossed in the battle you didn't even notice.

You then recover your Gunpla and set it back in the case. You look around for your opponents to give your regards for a good game, but you realize their gone, as well as their broken Gunpla.

"Did they leave already?" You ask.

"Yes they did. Without so much as a goodbye or good game." Karen shakes her head.

"That's ruuuude." Amy frowns. "It was a pretty fun battle, too."

"I guess they didn't think so." You say sadly.

Well, you have thirty minutes until your next battle, and fortunately enough, none of your Gunpla are really damaged.

My original idea was to get the Gouf Custom, the arm pack and another kit with some shields so I could have a writhing array of barely effective physical shields then I saw the Thundrbolt which already had that going for it.
The Thunderbolt is also a more complicated build apparently so I wanted a kit that would give me a little challenge that I could really look forward to once I work my way up to it.

>>32031625
Very nice. Love the shield design. Shame they don't seem mountable on anything other than the arms from the few small things I've read on the HG kit thus far.

>>32031618
I would gladly buy a pack of Ground Type shields if they sold them and see if I could work a boxer type theme on a future Gunpla.
>>
>>32031717
In the fiction the Hazel can attach shields to almost any part of its body, including special back and shoulder mounted sub-arms. Some of its variant forms involve putting them on its legs, even. I don't know if the model kit can do that, though. It would be hard to make a model as customizable as the Hazel is supposed to be.

Naturally. The customization and ease of assembly is what drew me back into gunpla. The last model I had was an old old model I got from epcot as a kid and built with my dad back when you had to glue things. Was some time of treaded transport Zaku.

As for building supplies I still have most of my 40K modeling tools, although I need a new set of clippers I'll grab once the kits come in.

"Hey, let's go see how the others are doing." You say.

The three of you head over the the next table over, where you see Lucina's team is still battling. Moving closer, you see that their battling against an AGE-themed team running the Gundams AGE-1, AGE-2, and AGE-3.

The AGE-1 running in its Titus mode, and squaring off against the Super Maxter. The AGE-2 was in Double Bullet mode and paired off with the Exia Cuirassier while the AGE-3 Fortress mode was up against the Guntank TUSKER. They seemed to be fighting in a forest field.

The Super Maxter and Titus were going off like a classic boxing match, both suits wailing on each other with furiously fast and powerful punches. The Titus activates its beam lariat and tries to take out the Maxter, but Mac is quick enough and ducks under it, and you see him prepping for his favorite move and realize the fight's over. The Super Maxter initiates the Dempsey Roll and just repeatedly pounds away at the Titus' head, continually forcing it back. Finally, one final punch sends the Titus' head flying off in the air.

Meanwhile, the Fortress begins unloading powerful beam blasts at the TUSKER. The TUSKER folds up into its Breacher mode and barrels forward, its MLRS pods and cannons roaring in response. Rockets and shells land all over the Fortress, knocking it around and spoiling its aim before the TUSKER slams into it, literally grinding it under its treads. Jake then backs off, switches back to Siege mode, and blasts the downed Fortress point blank with its twin cannons, sending dirt and Gunpla parts flying everywhere.

Finally, the AGE-2 and the Exia were in furious close combat, GN Blade clashing against beam saber. The AGE-2 tries to press its dual wielding advantage, but Lucina is doing a good job parrying all his attacks with her one blade. You knew she was just biding her time for an opening, and she sees it when the AGE-2 overextends just a bit. She raises her shield, which blocks the AGE-2's incoming attacks for a brief second, but it's all she needs. A flick of the wrist severs the AGE-2's arms at the elbows, and another flick sends two halves of a Gundam falling to the ground.

BATTLE ENDED

"Oh boy, it looks like we're going to be fighting each other in the finals." You sigh.

"I know, isn't it exciting?" Amy grins.

Our best matchup against Lucina would either be ourselves or Karen (Amy would just get eaten alive unless she got super lucky), and while Karen is probably the stronger choice in theory, her suit loses in fluff to the Exia meaning she's got bad mojo. You follow Holly over to where she's supposed to fight next. You arrive at the table, and see that her opponent has already arrived. Seemed to be some kid wearing a bright red, hooded jacket. He had the hood up, so you couldn't get a clear look at his face. Kinda sketchy, actually.

"He looks kinda sketchy..." Holly frowns.

"Don't worry. Not like he can do anything to you here." You assure her.

"All right, place your GP Bases and Gunpla." The referee says.

Remember how the 00 had it's GN drives mounted on it's shoulders?

And now think about where the Balls on a Juggler mount.

So now we take the 00 chassis, alter the shoulders into Ball mounts, and swap in enough GM parts that it has a redundant power system independent of the GN drives. Alternatively we could start with a GM chassis and build it up rather than building the 00 down, whichever is easier.

Either way, we end up with the GN JUGGLER 00.

Dude, come on NZ-666 Kshatriya! With Balls mounted on the Bulges on the wings? Easily done. Then we run the Mercurius shield bits on the wings! It's shenanigans the suit. Plus if we keep the detection gear in the Balls it gives us an ungodly level of battlefield control shenanigans!
>>
>>32032793
True, though I wonder if she improved on it.

We turn a basic GM into a high spec juggler, making every fight 3 vs 1,
>>
>>32032827
well then you're basically back to the image of the ball with arms.

Unless there's a very tiny ball we can use as a head, and use some plasticard and mad modeling skills to make look like a gundam/GM head. That'd be some seriously next fucking level kitbashing that I would stand and clap for.
>>
>>32032793
I wonder if she knew we were going to be here and thought she would get to batoru us
>>
Rolled 13

>>32032874

Nah. Shes probably just here to play, holding herself back while she has some fun.
>>
>>32032827
>I have expanded the hitbox on my head to be fuckhuge, please snipe my face.
Nah.

>>32032793
And we'll have to wait a week to find out. FFFFFF-
>>
>>32032885
He's a tease. I think that's a high crime in most middle eastern countries.
>>
Why don't we give the Balls Kshatriya wings then load those up with the 1/700 scale balls, then have those attach onto Kshatriya wings that we mount on the back of the GM?
>>
>>32032965
I don't think tat would work.
>>
Just gonna go on record and say that I'm against shoehorning in any more AI-controlled autonomous subsystems on top of what we've already got, both because filling the battlefield with drones has been shown to be an extremely unsound tactic against anyone who's legitimately good unless you take them completely off guard (which will work exactly once after we git gud enough for opponents to start watching film on us), and because having too many little AI controlled bastards running around doing the work for us is very much NOT batoru tanoshii.
>>
>>32033175
Even if I understood that yabba dabba doo speak at the end look at it like this: We have two balls on our GM currently. We can still use them for a massive firepower increase, and keep them attached to us; or we can drop them off and get a decent speed boost and some automated fire support. The enemy will still have to deal with them in some capacity.
Having drones is rarely a disadvantage, however you're correct in assuming we may get to the min-max faglord tier where you have to go all into mobility and firepower to survive longer than a tenth of a second.

Our current juggler theme should serve us pretty well in team and solo fights until we at least start hitting lower-tier high level fights.
>>
>>32033175
I'll go on record saying that's great cupcake. But this about what we find fun. If we find drone spam fun. Guess what? We drone spam.
>>
>>32033175
>>32033215
>>32033225
I'm sure the /m/ and /tg/ wizards can cook up some bullshit hax if it's absolutely needed when we get to the pro level.
>>
>>32033225
But I don't find drone spam fun. Also full spam goes against our established character who is very much into doing things up-close and personal when the chance arises.

"Fun" does not automatically entail full faglord gimmick spamming, and dronespam in Gundam is traditionally used by shitheads who are just out to rape everything as efficiently and impersonally as possible, which is great if you're out to win a war but not so much if you intend to actually have fun with your fights.

Oh I'm sure.

But the only thing I think of right now; Carrier has arrived.

That's great cupcake.

>goes against our established character who is very much into doing things up-close and personal when the chance arises.
He's shown to do whatever is called upon at the time. Be it range or melee. He's an all rounder.
>>
>>32033301
>He's an all rounder
Not to mention he's trying to wrangle team leader away from Karen pretty hard.

Mid range jack of all trades is a good fit for a battlefield commander which we seem to be shaping up into.

I'd be surprised if we don't go full support unit at some point during the quest.
>>
>>32033301
I still don't see what's so "fun" about having our battles decided by autopilot, but if that's your thing Gundam might not be for you.
>>
>>32033323
>I'd be surprised if we don't go full support unit at some point during the quest.

I hope we do. C3 and Drones. I would love that.

Not only do we have a way to fight but also ways to improve our teammates.
>>
>>32033270

Full spam isnt a good thing of course.

I see ourselves adding at most one or two more pod, maximum. That'll allow us to use some as dedicated support plateforms, ECM, defence, what not.

The Balls themselves do not detract from our aggressive combat style. Indeed, we bring the pods into battle and then immediately deploy them, allowing us offensive long ranged firepower as we close with the enemy.
>>
>>32033330
>I still don't see what's so "fun" about having our battles decided by autopilot

That's great different opinions . Welcome to life.

>but if that's your thing Gundam might not be for you.

Oh no, I like Gundam, but it doesn't mean I have to play by the shows rules like you seem to want.

That's what beautiful about quest. You can tell settings rules to go fuck itself and forge your on path with in it.

We are Cool Guy.
Not some looser using Henchmen Balls to do the Dirty Job.
Our Dear Little sister would hate us for that.
Those 2 Balls are our BALLS.. I wanted to say BROS, but you get what I wanted to say, right?

>And you can't spell Beam/Funnel Spam withou SPAM. So NOPE.
>>
>>32033393
From other players perspectives we are the equivalent of an engneer with two gunslingers; basically we're mecha hitler.

I honestly enjoy this though since it's different than how /tg/ usually plays characters.
>>

>We've delibrately kicked our ball towards our team leader in 1 v 1 as a distraction

>We send them ahead to trigger a trident-to-the-head-trap

>Our balls do 'look out, si- ARRGH' for us in the last fight

Ok.

>We've delibrately kicked our ball towards our team leader in 1 v 1 as a distraction

worth it

>We send them ahead to trigger a trident-to-the-head-trap

double worth it

>Our balls do 'look out, si- ARRGH' for us in the last fight

manly as fuck.
>>
>>32033420
>>32033419
Fffff... you are right.
>And who the hell keeps kicking Balls in the Balls? Oh yeah Zaku 2 from MGS...
>>
>>32033442

>Completely showcasing our affinity as a big bad.

I'm actually completely ok with this.
>>
>>32033453
And it's fun!

Don't forget that.
>>
>>32033175
>git gud enough for opponents to start watching film on us
Well since it's a Bandai sponsored event it's probably on local access cable at the least. Maybe streaming.
Which brings me to another point...

>>32033447
We must be super boring to watch. While it's been fun playing, think about the matches thus far: mexibro sandbush; divided and one shotted more or less. Done in under 4 minutes and the most recent one where we just took potshots at GOES FAST boogie boarders until we threw a wrench in their plans and beat face which was at best low on the highlight reel because we meleed an armor to death. This will most likely be played to yakkity sax.

Most of it is our opponents laming out, but still.
>>
>>32033420
>That feel when we're at home building a hobby kit one night and come to this realization
>>
>>32033644
>We must be super boring to watch.

This seems to disagree with you and imagine even more people probably enjoy because it's not something they see all too often.

>There's a lot of cheering, and you turn to see that your battle had attracted quite a crowd. You were so engrossed in the battle you didn't even notice.
>>
>>32033682
The clutch stuff was mostly near the end, Until then the match was more or less a none-entity until we rolled our first 20.
>>
>>32033703
>"An MA? Meh this match will be over quick. I'll go check out that ball gi- waaaaait a minute... the hell did I just see?"
>>
>>32033703
You're saying that having Deathscythe launch Overflag was boring? Or that great ambush (which by the way was the first 20 wasn't at the end of the match, which also doesn't mean a crt in this quest, so a 20 doesn't mean nearly as much as it would in others) we had after that?
