You are Reinhold, master swordsman and victor of the Royal Swordsmanship Tournament. The King was so impressed with your skill, he personally requested that you be transferred out of the army and into the Royal Guard! Not bad for an orphan who was raised in a brothel in a poor fishing village.

The only issue at this point is your assignment... you've been charged to be the personal guard of the King's only daughter Marianne. While she is the vision of loveliness that you'd expect from a Princess, her personality is... well... she seems to have some issues.

It was a match to remember.

But despite her best efforts, Rana was unable to eat more turkey legs than Sir Vincent. And her loss was your victory, since you bet Luciana that Sir Vincent would win...

...but now the rowdiness is at an end, as you're just kind of hanging out with the others in the hallway for now.

>Congratulations, you are now a timid LLAMA!
>Llamas are strong and hardy... but also rather skittish.
>The Princess considers you to be her friend!
>But while llamas may be majestic, they still don't count as people.

>>
While Emilio and Karel see Luciana off, you notice Reya just kind of standing idly behind Elena... remembering that you haven't really talked to him much since arriving in Granache, you make your way over to say hi.

"So Reya, what do you think of our castle life here in Granache?" you ask,
"It's surprisingly lively around here... and Sir Vincent was way less scary than I had imagined," Reya says as he glances down the hall. "I definitely wasn't expecting him to challenge Rana to an eating contest," he laughs.
"I do hope you won't hold a grudge against him for beating your sister," Marianne chimes in.
"Nah, it's good for her to get knocked down a peg every now and then," he replies, shaking his head. "It keeps her from getting too overbearing with the whole 'great and powerful dragon' routine, you know?"
"Yes, I can imagine."
"Though I guess I get to get used to yet another new place," he sighs, "since I'll be accompanying the little princess here to her uncle's place tomorrow."

Happily bouncing up and down, Elena grabs your hand.

"Umm, Reinhold?" she calls out.
"Hm?"
"You like to draw, right? That's what Luciana said."
"Yeah, I do a little bit of that," you reply.
"Can I borrow some crayons or colored pencils from you?" she asks, looking up at you with pleading eyes.

That only serves to make you feel even worse about letting her down...

"Um, all I have is regular pencils," you say. "No color stuff."
"Awww..." Elena mumbles as she kicks the floor. "Guess I'll ask Aunt Ariane if she has some that I can use tomorrow."

"...maybe I could show you some basic sword moves for you to practice sometime?" you suggest. "That's how I got started when I was around your age."
"Really!?" Elena's eyes light up,
"But I thought that your father didn't want you playing with swords," Marianne says, crossing her arms. "I know that it's not like he can do anything about it now, but do you really want to risk getting in trouble if word somehow gets to him about what you're doing?"

Then she turns to you.

"The same goes for you, Reinhold. Do you really want to risk incurring the wrath of your girlfriend's father?"

She kind of has a point there...

"I can't get in trouble as long as Papa doesn't find out," Elena replies, crossing her arms as if she's mocking Marianne. "Reya won't tell 'cuz he's nice... right?"
"My job's to keep you out of danger, not out of trouble with your parents," Reya replies, throwing his hands in the air. "I'm staying out of this one."
"So that only leaves you," Elena turns to Marianne.
"I don't really care either way," Marianne replies, patting the little girl on the head. "I just wanted to make sure that you understood the risk, that's all."
"I'm gonna be brave like Uncle Gregory and Andreas so I'm not scared of getting in trouble!" she says, proudly tapping her chest with her fist.

She definitely has spirit.

"She's just going to sneak and do it anyways," you shrug, "so I might as well show her how to practice the right way."

"Oh-" you stammer. "Yeah, sorry for holding you up."

After waving goodbye to Elena and Reya, the two of you head in the opposite direction from them... just as Karel and Emilio happen to do the same.

"Hm?" Marianne glances at them. "Where are you two headed, your rooms aren't this way."
"Umm, we're going to stop by the library where Mr. Gerhard is for a little while," Emilio mumbles. "I don't really feel like calling it a night just yet."
"I see," she replies. "I didn't know that you shared Luciana's interest in reading..."

"I recall Sylvie mentioning before that Gerhard helped her out when she first started teaching Reinhold magic, so you should be in good hands," Marianne says. "I don't want to hold you two up any more than we already have, so..."

Marianne then speeds up her walking pace, forcing you to do the same in order to keep up with her. Before long, you find yourselves in the stairwell that leads to your rooms, having left Karel and Emilio in the distance.

Though she walks the rest of the way to her room at a brisk pace, you can't help but notice that Marianne seems to be kind of tired.

"...finally, I can go back to sleep..." Marianne says, stifling a yawn as she reaches for her doorknob. "Let me fetch your sword and then you'll be free for the rest of the night."
"Thanks again for letting me leave it in your room," you say.

Scurrying into her room, Marianne takes only a few seconds inside before returning with your cloth-wrapped sword.

"Fortunately, this thing didn't come to life while we were out and destroy my room," Marianne says handing it over to you.
"That would be pretty bad, yeah," you reply, laughing nervously as you unwrap it just in case your sword -did- do something strange (it didn't).
"And now I bid you goodnight." Marianne says. "As per the usual, I'll meet you tomorrow morning before breakfast."

With that, the Princess retreats into her room and closes the door behind her. And once again, you are free to do as you please.

We got a castle? I know princess bodyguard is an imortant job but this is just too much.

You put too much details into this.
>>
While you kind of want to go and train a bit, you're way too stuffed to even pretend to attempt such a thing. And trying to force it would just result in you puking up all the food that you just ate.

Part of you wants to go back downstairs and see how Karel and Emilio are doing in the library... but you'd rather not infringe on their privacy. Instead, you decide to finally retreat into your own room for the night.

Heading on inside, you make a quick scan of the state of your room. For better or worse, it's the same as it was the last time you were in here.

"Home sweet home..." you mumble as you clear off a space on your bed and sit down on it before removing the cloth that your sword's wrapped in. The luster of the metal itself is oddly dull, kind of how your first bracelet was when you got it.

...and the new bracelet's in the same state, now that you're actually bothering to look at it.

Meant to say Reinhold's room, not castle.

The guest suites in Marconetti consisted on a large sittingroom area connected to two smaller bedrooms. Each of those bedrooms has its own personal bathroom.

Reinhold's room is just a VERY large bedroom with a bed, desk and table, along with a full bathroom attached. There's plenty of room for more stuff, but Reinhold doesn't exactly have much to fill it with.

Taking special care not to let it touch the bracelet on your right arm, you place your sword on your bed before hopping down to the floor and walking over to your desk.

And then you remember that Luciana is probably trying to draw your reward for that little bet, and the thought of that improves your mood ever so slightly.

With a sigh, you get to picking up the rest of your things, taking inventory of everything that you own just in case. And considering that you don't really own very much to begin with, it's not exactly hard to do.

After your room is satisfactorily tidy, you pick up your sword and place it in its scabbard. Assuming that it needs to be close to you in order to draw from your magical energy (and because you're ever so slightly paranoid about someone sneaking in here and stealing it while you're asleep), you prop it against the wall closest to your bed before finally turning in for the night yourself.

It's nice to be able to sleep in your own bed again.

I am to sleep.

When I check the archives we'd damn well better have slept with that sword. It is love of the purest sort.

Though they get turned around a couple of times, Karel and Emilio eventually find themselves stopped in front of the door to one of the castle's many libraries.

"Is this the right one?" Emilio asks.
"I think so," Karel replies. "This's where me and Reinhold ran into that little pervert girl earlier, anyways..." she says, shuddering at the memory of all the innuendoes that little girl was making.
"Might as well go on inside, then," he replies as he leads the way inside.

Karel's kind of surprised that Emilio actually seems to be taking the initiative during this little venture, but opts not to say anything for fear of ruining things. After all, he was being EXTREMELY moody just a few hours ago, and experience has shown her that it's rather easy for him to backslide.

As they enter the library, Karel can't help but feel that she's forgetting something... but no matter how hard she tries, she can't recall just what it is.

"So, uh..." she calls out, "...we're gonna be starting tonight?"
"No," Emilio replies, shaking his head. "I'm just going to try and see if they have some beginner's magic books first, it's been a while since Father first taught me and I honestly can't remember what exactly he showed me first."
"Oh."

Unfortunately, this place is kind of huge and neither one of them has any idea where anything's supposed to be. War records, court romances, the two end up finding pretty much every type of book -except- what they're looking for.

"Dammit, this is kind of annoying," Karel grumbles. "You wanna come back tomorrow when there's someone around who can actually help us out?"
"I guess we have no choice," Emilio sighs as he turns back towards the door.
"Oh, I didn't know that the two of you actually wanted my assistance," someone says, tapping the Prince on his shoulder.

And then his face goes completely pale.

"GYAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!" Emilio screams as he triss to run away from this mystery person... but trips over on his own feet and ends up falling on his face. "K- Karel, help!" he whimpers.
"Uh..." Karel says, a nervous smile on her face.

So -that's- what she forgot to mention. So much for Emilio's improved mood...

"Oh my," Gerhard says, extending a hand to the fallen Prince, "I didn't mean to startle you."
"...Mr. Gerhard?" Emilio gasps as he's helped to his feet.
"Yeah, he kind of does that a lot," Karel mumbles. "Sorry for not telling you sooner."
"N- never mind," he sighs, "it's not like you did it on purpose."

Dusting himself off, Emilio tries to regain what little composure he has.

"So what brings the two of you to the library tonight?" Gerhard asks. "I'm technically supposed to be off-duty until my arm's back in full function, but I'd be happy to help you in any way I can."
"Something's wrong with your arm?" Emilio asks.
"Just some required recovery time after that unpleaantness back in Marconetti, it's nothing that you need worry yourself with," he replies.

Unfortunately, his explanation has the opposite effect.

"Umm, anyways," Emilio mumbles, "we were wondering if you had any beginner-type magic books here. Karel asked me to teach him how to use magic, so I thought that I should get a bit of a refresher..."
"Ah, just like Reinhold and Miss Sylvie!" Gerhard says, snapping his fingers.

Or rather, he tries to snap them but fails to produce any sound.

I wonder if that was intentional.
>>

Nope, he can't work his new arm well enough to snap properly yet.
>>
>>32033680

>>
>>32033630
Either his arm's that fucked or he has some weird silencing magic going on. Pic related.
>>
>>32033630

"Well I'd be more than happy to assist the two of you," Gerhard nods. "and Miss Sylvie happens to have recently returned the beginner books that shed borrowed so I know -exactly- where they are..." he says, stroking his moustache as he walks past the Prince and towards Karel. "I'll be right back..."

Karel can almost swear that Gerhard winks at her just before disappearing behind a bookshelf.

"This place is so weird," Emilio sighs. "I thought I was going to have a heartattack when he just showed up out of nowhere like that."
"That's what happens when you have former assassins working as butlers, I guess..." Karel shrugs. "You gonna be alright?"
"Yes, thanks for asking," he sighs. "So what kind of spells were you thinking about learning, anyways? I mean, I can help you with the basics just fine but I don't know any attack spells or anything of that sort."
"Stuff that I can use with my sword, stuff that I can use if I get disarmed... you know, that kind of thing," she replies. "I just don't want to be completely helpless if something happens when I don't have my sword on me."
"Yeah, it definitely sucks being helpless..." he mumbles.

Why? She's done with them, of course she'll return them.
>>

Noticing that Emilio's starting to feel down again, Karel puts on her best smile.

"C'mon, you're not helpless," Karel says, resting a hand on his shoulder. "You've got me, right?"
"Huh?" Emilio stares at her.
"You're not helpless as long as you've got me," she says, patting her chest. "You know, 'I am your strength' or whatever that old line was."
"That's not really the same thing," he sighs.

Just then, Gerhard picks that moment to reappear with a couple of books in tow. Fortunately, he doesn't spook Emilio too much this time.

"Here you are, the two most basic-level magic instruction books that I could find," he says, handing them to Emilio.
"Thanks," Emilio replies. "So I can take these out of the library?"
"As long as I get them back, of course."
"Great," he nods. "...so I'll read through these tonight before I go to sleep and then we can start the magic lessons tomorrow."
"Whatever's fine with you," Karel replies. "And thanks, Mr. Gerhard."
"It's always a pleasure to help," Gerhard says, bowing.

With their task complete, Karel and Emilio wave goodbye to Gerhard and make their way out of the library.

"Just think of it like this," Karel says, nudging Emilio with her elbow. "If I actually turn out to be good at this magic stuff and get as awesome as your uncle, you'll be able to point to me an brag to everyone that you're the only reason why I was able to get that far," she laughs.
"Sure," Emilio replies, shaking his head. "I'll be sure to tell everyone that it's only thanks to me that the legendary magic swordsman Karel isn't just some ill-mannered loudmouth," he smirks at her.
"Oh?" she turns to him. "Come to think of it, maybe I'll be able to brag to the world that -I'm- the only reason that Prince Emilio of Marconetti isn't still some wimpy crybaby... but the verdict's still out on that, isn't it?" she says with a sly grin.
"As much as it is on you getting anywhere near as strong as Uncle Gregory," he replies. "For all we know, Elena might end up leaving you in the dust..."
"If you're gonna be like that, maybe I'll ask -her- to teach me magic instead of you," she laughs.
