Welcome to Academy City. The time is morning, the weather is pleasant, and the date is August 13.

You are Kyril Torikov, ‘Level 2’ Telekinetic Child Error and today seemed kinda odd. Waking up on your breakfast table with nothing but your boxers and a textbook on you tended to have that effect. Oh your girlfriend had also been cooking in your kitchen at the time. At least you vaguely remembered what happened last night. Asuka was a lewd drunk, emphasis on lewd. Now though, the both of you are wandering the underground mall looking for something to pass the time until lunch.

The reason for this was because you were going to meet Toulour, your contact at THIEF later. You had a job lined up and Asuka was involved. Turns out that trust could be built robbing illegal fight clubs blind. Who would have thought? She did say that you looked like you knew what you were going to do with your life and she wanted to be a part of it. Maybe you were a sucker for that kind of talk or maybe not, but you did know that if this job pans out, you could make a good amount of money before going legit.

That however was talk of the future. Right now you would rather enjoy the present as best you could. There were plenty of ways to pass the time here. There was the ever trusty arcade with its crane game but you haven’t taken Asuka out shopping before so there was an alternative. Hell maybe there’s some thugs who might be dumb enough to try and pick her up.

Shopping seemed like the best option. You had money, you had time and you had things that you could be legally acquiring. Asuka absolutely agreed and dragged you to a shop you thought would never exist at all in the underground mall. It sold knives of all shapes and sizes. Mostly it was cutlery, the kind you’d find on a dining table or a kitchen wall, but this was Academy City. There were always going to be experimental designs and metallurgy. The first blade she picked off the wall was a long sabre.

“This is one sick saif,” she exclaimed.

Did she just use common vernacular?

“Hey shopkeep how much for this?”

“I’m afraid that is a commission piece miss,” the staff member returned, “If you would like to commission one then.”

“Hmmm, maybe later then,” she put the sword back.

Wandering deeper you found her with some kind of gauntlet around her hand. On the back of her hand protruded a chainsaw blade like it was like some kind of chainfist.

“What do you think?” she started swinging it around, “Not subtle enough right?”

She put it back then found another such gauntlet without caring what you thought. A flex of her hands and a blade extended from underneath her wrist.

“This a bit too obviously illegal,” she commented again, “The mechanics are great though.”

“The young miss is looking for a personal defence weapon then,” the staff member returned with a bag in his hand, “Might I suggest a karambit?”

“Hmmm,” she looked it over, “Small, check. Biomechanics check out as well. Agricultural roots check. Can be used as hair ornament check. Sold, how much?”

“You take money cards?” you interjected.

“Thank you dear,” she gave you a small kiss for that.

Now 49,999 yen lighter, you wandered the other shops that Asuka wasn’t too interested in. There was a clothes shop that specialised in weaving new protective fibres in to fashionable apparel. The shop across from it sold items that were useful if you were a participant of the X Games, like skateboards, in-lines and bicycles. That said, the clerk at the knife shop did recommend you trade in your dinky brass knuckles for a true gentleman’s weapon, the butterfly knife. You didn’t have too much time left so you could only get one before it was time to meet up with Toulour.

The clothes actually sounded practical and you always could use a new undershirt. It cost a lot but they did say it was lined with a stab-proof inner layer. You were able to get a discount after showing them why you were shopping here though. The thing even came with a guarantee. “No stab wounds deeper than an inch or your money back” and in fine print, “teleporters not covered.” It took some convincing to stop Asuka from testing out The Dean on your new threads however. If you weren’t already stitched up she probably would have ran you through to satisfy her curiosity and get you a refund.

The time is now lunch, the weather is uncomfortable with a jacket and the date remains unchanged.

Toulour was sitting at the same spot as your last meeting. His gaze was rather fixed on Asuka which didn’t quite sit well with your girlfriend too much.

“Toulour was it?” she greeted frostily.

“Well hello there. You have me at a disadvantage here,” he adjusted his glasses, “Care to introduce me Torikov?”

“Kudou Asuka,” she replied, “It would be best if you did not search my person for weapons.”

“Toulour then,” he scratched the back of his head before turning back to you, “How about we get to business?”

“A wise suggestion,” Asuka agreed.

“You got some great assets here man,” his wink was obvious enough for him to readjust his glasses, “Now about your membership. Since you passed our test, let me congratulate you. We had a betting pool about your reaction to the test and like I said, I won. Hopefully the trouble you went through was worth this much.”

He passed you a small stack of 10,000 bills underneath the table.

“Thank you Toulour,” you replied coolly, “What now though?”

[1/3]
>>
>>32043876
“Well let’s see, you are now officially a THIEF Contractual Associate. We may ask you to do a few things for us on a contract basis. You’re free to refuse but we pay handsomely, depending on what job you take up. There’s only one more rule when you’re out there doing jobs for us though.”

“And what may that be?”

“No killing innocent civilians,” his glasses reflected the lights in the ceiling, “The first time we hand you a cleaner’s bill, the second time we’ll slap some sense in to you and the third time. Well, let’s just say you’ll star in your very own beach episode complete with concrete shoes.”

“Noted,” you gulped, “Anything else?”

“Actually yes, you are obligated to report all your jobs from now on but in return you have some new perks to go with being a member.”

He handed you a new piece of paper.

“No more disposable numbers,” he shifted his glasses, “You can just talk to me over a payphone as much as you like, if you’re using your phone we’ll still have to do this stupid song and dance though. What else? Oh right, money laundering services for you and your crew, if you have any, and probably a few other perks I keep forgetting. They’re probably not important anyway.”

“Right, I was thinking of hitting that fight club in the nineteenth, heard about it?”

“Yeah, but only distantly,” Toulour nodded and almost lost his glasses, “I take it this is a two-day job at most? I suppose I can offer some free consultation and other paid services. Those two are also perks by the way.”

“What kind of services?”

“Let me ask you this,” he adjusted his glasses, “Do you have a getaway driver?”

[2/3]
>>
>>32043910
Your expression probably gave it away as he leaned back looking slightly smug.

“We got some up and coming drivers that can get you and your crew out of trouble, for a small one-time fee per job of course. So how about it?”

“And the free advice?”

“I’m guessing you’re going to clean out the gambling ring that actually formed around the fight club so my advice is to actually have someone take part in the actual fighting.”

Asuka and you exchanged knowing looks.

“That won’t be a problem,” you assured.

“So, want the getaway driver for the full package?”

“I’m going to have to take you up on that offer then Toulour,” you shrugged.

“Alright, just hand that stack of cash back and we’re golden,” and once you did, “Your driver can be reached at my number. Just shoot me a call and your driver will get there within five minutes. Don’t make them wait too long though.”

“Thanks for everything then,” the both of you shook on it.

“No problem, we take care of our own,” he got up, “You might want to think of a name for your crew too.”

With business out of the way it was time to call up your crew, as Toulour put it. Asuka for her part was kind of eager to meet them. She was acquainted with Sagara, Tadakuni and Kyousuke already, so all that was left was to meet Nakazawa and interact with them more meaningfully.

Sagara was the first to arrive, gave you a wave, took off his head phones which was blasting some kind of electronic music, and went to get some food at the counter. You noticed that he was using his bat-like Sound Cloud Ability to deftly dodge the lunch time crowd. Next to arrive was Kyousuke, emerging from the tail end of a group of metal heads. It looked like he had been hanging out with his other and most likely Skill-Out friends. The sight of Asuka only stopped him momentarily to your girlfriend’s amusement. You didn’t notice Tadakuni pulling up in his Vespa until he beeped twice just on the other side of the window pane. You knew he could muffle sound with his Stealth Step but this was ridiculous. The last to arrive was Nakazawa, stepping out of a temporarily parked Lamborghini Countach. You noticed the Anti-Skill equipment and the luscious thighs in the driver’s seat before it sped off for parts unknown.

Looks like the gang was all here, now what were you going to tell them?

You weren’t going to lie, not to your buddies, especially since you still wanted to be friend with them all. So you told them about the fight club, with Asuka’s input for clarification, and your plan to rob them blind. Judgement were probably going to clean it out in the next few days anyway so why not do part of their job for them by emptying some coffers first? It only took five minutes to bring them up to the score.

“I’m in,” Sagara agreed, “I could use some new headphones.”

“Me too boss,” Tadakuni said, “This sounds way too good to not do.”

“I don’t know,” Kyousuke sounded unsure, “I’m more worried that I don’t see how I could help here.”

“Crowd control,” Asuka suggested.

“I’ll think about it,” he squeaked at her.

“You guys can’t seriously be considering just straight up robbing the place,” Nakazawa was the only one who was against this.

“Of course we are not considering it,” Asuka cut in, “We are going to and have the decency and graciousness to include you as part of our group for a cut of the profits in exchange for your efforts.”

“Hmm, I suppose the cuts do get bigger if there’s less of us but I wouldn’t mind it,” Tadakuni mused, “I’d rather have a brother at my back than all the money in the world.”

Nakazawa shot a dirty look at him.

“I’m just doing this for kicks,” he finally admitted.

“I guess if I’m not needed I don’t really want to do this,” Kyousuke decided, “You guys get a bigger cut and all that.”

So it seems like the line was drawn. You had Sagara and Tadakuni fully committed as well as Asuka. Kyousuke would make for some nice crowd control and Nakazawa always could handle the other side of the law for you but weren’t strictly necessary now that you thought about it. Still, some more warm bodies on the ground was always a good thing.

Tadakuni can help the getaway. It might tax his abilities, but an unnoticeable car is a great way to escape.
Kyousuke is going to be useful if for some reason Kyril cannot TK the money bags.
Lastly Nakazawa can ingratiate himself with the law if he tells them of the fight club, and this could be very useful down the line.

“Well we could use your help Kyousuke,” you started, “They loot ain’t gonna lift itself and I can only throw one at a time anyway.”

“Alright, I’m in,” Kyousuke decided, “I can at least do that much grunt work.”

“What about you Nakazawa? Can’t you get more favour reporting this stuff?”

“Don’t think I’m an idiot Kyril,” he replied slightly insulted, “I thought about it but you know, it’d be really suspicious for me to know about this all of a sudden. This is the kind of thing that takes a while to uncover you know and I haven’t laid any obvious groundwork for my investigation.”

“Alright, I’m not pushing you in to this,” you let him go.

“I won’t report you, and we can still be friends,” he said, “Just if you wanted me to break the law, make sure it’s more important than just a get rich alright?”

With that he left, but not after you bought him some lunch. Your newly formed crew retreated back to your place to commence planning.

“I’ve done some preliminary recce,” you started, “We’ve got a security door to the betting area, don’t know about the security though. The one guard I saw at the fighter’s entrance was kinda dumb.”

“That is correct, most of their guards may be dim-witted however they are also carrying firearms, or weapons,” Asuka supplied, “They will not hesitate to use violence and if they do, they the crowd will be unmanageable. The ensuing melee however would be glorious.”

“Then it looks like you’ll need to pin point where the money is kept,” Sagara stepped up.

“And me to work my magic,” Tadakuni wriggled his fingers, “They won’t know what hit ‘em.”

“That leaves me and Kyril to play the crowd right?” Kyousuke asked.

“And I shall be the main distraction and your alternative exit strategy,” Asuka finally concluded.

All in all it sounded like a good plan. Would you go with it though?

An alternative plan would be starting a riot during the fights. This can be done easily enough by making insinuations that that the fights are rigged. The first thing the organizers are going to do is try and guard their money, and as a result show where it is.
The ruckus and gun shots can also draw the attention of the law ensuring that we aren't pursued.
Additionally we should also loot any guns we find.

“Sounds solid then, but I suppose we could make sure we have alternatives,” you continued, “Worst comes to worst, we play the crowd, start a riot and escape in the chaos with what we have.”

“Wait, how are we getting out of this mess again?” Sagara asked.

“We have a getaway driver on tap,” you answered, “It’ll take them five minutes to get to us so I guess it’s best to call them when we have access to the loot.”

“And how did you get one?” Tadakuni sounded a bit hurt.

“Sorry man, I don’t think your scooter can carry everything. As for where I got one I have some friends.”

“THIEF right?” it was Kyousuke, “I always thought the urban legend about the thieves guild was always too well constructed. That and I know a few guys who seem like the type. Didn’t figure you’d be in on it too. You’re not neck deep in shit are you?”

“It looks like Kyousuke has a brain after all dear,” Asuka came and stood behind you.

You only sighed as she messed with your hair. Tadakuni and Sagara started to appreciate their involvement now.

“We aren’t in trouble, and this isn’t an official job from them,” you answered, “I just thought it might be a good idea to ease Asuka in to working with us.”

The ensuing silence lasted a while until Tadakuni started laughing.

“Only you man,” he managed, “Only you would think a trust building exercise is ‘rob a place together’ and actually go do it. Never change boss.”

“Yeah this doesn’t change a thing, let’s do this,” Sagara gave you a smile.

“Right, I reckon we don’t have to hit it today, so we’ll be laying a foundation for it,” you went on, “I’ll be Asuka’s manager and set up a fight for tomorrow. We’ll all go in to case it out properly this time and if we really need to go, we go on the phrase ‘Heaven or Hell’.”

“Let’s rock, right?” Asuka added.

You almost forgot she was into fighting games.

If there was a time for you to be armed with a gun, this seemed like to be the perfect time. Whether you would use it is another matter but you were rather confident with shooting it telekinetically. You only had one mag anyway so it was not like reloading was going to be a problem. You had 8 shots. Asuka didn’t seem surprised with you fiddling with it before you left.

“I’m more surprised you didn’t have any porn lying around,” she admitted.

“The internet is for porn.”

The time is late afternoon, the weather is still hot, and the date remains unchanged.

School District 19 was exactly as you remembered it, only this time Asuka was taking you through the normal entrance to the pit, hidden in the buildings. There were ripped posters along with halls as you took an elevator down to the pit. The bouncer, or guard, just took one look at you before Asuka silenced him with,

“They’re with me Twinkie, don’t get uppity.”

“Yes ma’am,” he replied nervously, “The Pit Boss wants a word with you though if you don’t mind.”

“I’ll think about it,” was her reply.

The pit was just as loud and raucous as ever. You could see bets being made, won and lost in time to the punches and kicks exchanged in the main fighting area. The box seats that you and Lord Kudou found gave a clear view of the field and this level you’d really have to move up close to see the fights and given your condition that may not be wise. Sagara broke off to check out the odds and recce the area as well.

“Well dear, I suppose I should go see the Pit Boss and see what he wants,” she said, “Would you like to accompany me?”

The Pit Boss’ office was up a flight of stairs. Forced out of your chair temporarily, you ascended with Asuka’s steady grip. You popped another pill as you plopped back down in to your wheelchair and entered. Inside were three occupants. A large rotund man stood looking down in to the fight below, his clothes greasy as the food he was consuming. You couldn’t even begin to describe what that deep fried gunk was. The other was a girl holding on to a bloodied baseball bat. She was bathed in a low blue aura but you didn’t react to that as much as you reacted to her victim in the chair behind her. There was a faint smell of urine amongst the bloody odour.

“Oh my, is that Brutus?” Asuka asked nonplussed.

“Was Brutus,” the girl confirmed.

With the way his skull was caved in you weren’t going to argue that.

“Brutus was a very, very bad boy,” she continued, “You see, I actually need the fight money, unlike you princess.”

She poked Asuka to punctuate that statement.

“And you know what Brutus did when we had a fight lined up?” her tirade didn’t stop there, “He let some no name slut wander through like she was queen of the fucking world.”

She spread her arms wide, demonstrating the extent of her displeasure.

“So I didn’t get a fight, so I didn’t get the money, and now I’m late on my payments,” her wild gesticulating didn’t stop, “Thank whatever God there is that I’m convincing enough to delay the repo men so here’s what we’re going to do.”

She pointed at Asuka.

“You,” then she pointed at herself, “me, in that ring right the fuck now then you can go back to slutting it up or whatever it is you Ladies of Tokiwadai do.”

If she was picking a fight she was good at it. This wasn’t part of the plan but you could still use this to your advantage. However you would need to reign in Asuka.

Asuka reached for her sword and was about to draw when you stopped her. A simple telekinetic push backward as you pulled her back in to your stopped her long enough for you to silence her protests with a kiss. She didn’t struggle much and when she stopped you pulled away.

“Now, now dear, we’re on the clock,” you reminded her softly, “You can fight her all you want later.”

You think her pout was cute. It was the first time you ever said no to her without suffering grievous bodily harm. A bold first step in your relationship you think, short of this or that.

“Very well dear, I have no objections,” Asuka managed.

“The hell are you?” the girl asked, “Her pimp?”

“No, just her manager,” you gave her a toothy smile, “Kyril Torikov, at your service.”

“Toshino Kyouko,” she replied and sat down in one of the chairs, “So, do we have a deal or am I going to have to slap a bitch?”

“Well you see we’d love for the fight to happen,” you said, “But today’s not a great day.”

“Are you deaf or just dumb?”

“Now I’m not saying you aren’t fighting,” you continued, “It’s just that you’re going to be fighting tomorrow, so both of you are at tip top shape.”

“And I said I’m late on my payments so I need that money now. None of these chumps here can pull in enough dough for me to cover the costs so I need to fight the champ,” she exclaimed.

Well you had a solution to that. You could pay her bills, call it an advance, and she could keep the money if she won. However, if she lost you’d have her pay it back, with some interest. You’ve seen enough movies to recognise the start to a spiral of debt before and if she was this desperate you weren’t sure how to deal with that.

“Here’s what I’ll do,” you started slowly, “I’ll pay your bills. If you win the fight, good on you, you keep the money, no strings attached. You lose though, and I’ll give you a week to pay me back before I come looking for the money. Sound good?”

“Trading in one leash for another huh?” she grumbled, “Well it’s not like I have a choice, Pit Boss, book it. Aschente.”

“Aschente,” Asuka replied, “I do hope you at least put up a good fight Wanko-chan, I would hate for you to be enslaved to dear Kyril here. He’s so very aggressive and violent that I fear for your chastity.”

“Whatever you say Kuso,” Kyouko dropped a piece of paper on your head, “Here’s the bill.”

She left and for the first time since the conversation began the Pit Boss stopped eating his deep fried food and plodded over to the desk. His greasy hands moved with an economy of movement you couldn’t believe before he managed to produce a title for the next fight. Your business concluded you left and slowly fell down the stairs with Toshino Kyouko’s bill. She was running a cool 527,961 JPY in deficit. Why she owed that much money you didn’t care but it was a figure that did raise some heads. Asuka seemed familiar with her though so if you were pretty sure you could ask and with a backdrop like this, it seemed to make sense. That said you had received some messages from your friends. It looks like they mined out all they could from their recce and were heading to your place to unwind.

You decided to stay awhile, case out the joint a bit and ask some questions about Toshino Kyouko.

“Know her?” you asked as you did a circuit of the ring.

“A little, you could say that she is my rival,” Asuka answered from your lap, “Or at least that is what the promoters would like the masses to believe. We have met occasionally, but so far she has yet to best me. I take it that your interest in her is purely from a business perspective?”

“Obviously.”

“Well with the way you were eying her I almost had second thoughts about this business. Then again, whether you choose to enslave her through money is up to you. Perhaps this is your revenge for her dominance at the dancing games you love so much.”

“Wait she’s KYOU?”

“That detail may have slipped my mind,” Asuka hid her smile behind her hand, “So how is it?”

“How is what?”

“That a lady shall lie in your lap?”

You shrugged, noting the various exits and entrances to the area. Asuka seemed to smile for reasons you could not begin to comprehend. When you finally got back to your dorm your friends had just started on cooking some yakisoba. They didn’t question your late arrival nor the lady lying in your lap. Their findings were thus.

Two or three guards would patrol the perimeter of the ring whilst one always hung out back in the money room behind the betting kiosk. Outside there were one guard for each of the two entrances but they weren’t usually looking inside. Entrance to the money room required either some drilling or a security card that was probably found only in the Pit Boss’ office. The optimal time to strike was usually at the start of a fight near the end of the day. That was when the most money had accumulated and if the fight was a big one then so too would be the bets. The money itself could be snuck out a back tunnel and up to a side alley where a van could be parked.

All that was left was the exfil, which honestly, you had idea where the driver would drop you off but it was hopefully somewhere safe. Though you and Asuka would have to remain behind given that you were known faces now, Sagara, Tadakuni and Kyousuke were able to stand together. Their faces when you revealed that you were going to have to pay off half a million yen just to have arranged for the fight was priceless though.

“You gotta spend money to make money boys,” you remembered saying.

“Speaking of which, where are we gonna get a drill?” Kyousuke asked.

“I know a guy,” you answered.

“Here we go again,” Sagara mock sighed.

As the day came to a close, Asuka and the boys left leaving you with dirty dishes and plans for tomorrow’s job. You decided to read a book before going to bed.

Slowly you felt yourself drift in to sleep. Tour last thought for the day was not about physics or maths. Rather it was about something that Toulour had spoken about earlier in the day. A crew, that’s what he called your gathering of friends, both special and mundane. Here was a thing worthy of the name. In your dreams, you could feel the name coming to you. It was,

Biased source. Would not write a paper about.

Though thinking on it we really should do something for our Indian friend. Ties to judgement is objectively useful and we rare talk to her much.

Though luckily it seems Kyril has gotten more control over Asuka lately.
