HP: 10/11
PP: 11/11
Stress: 32/100

Isaac doesn’t take you and Rowan back to the house. Instead, he drives into the city and toward the docks, where they unload all the incoming freighters. A cool sea breeze chills you drive alongside the ocean. After a couple minutes, you pull into an empty stretch of pavement by a dilapidated warehouse. Most of the windows are cracked or broken, and judging from the weeds sprouting up from fissures in the pavement, nobody’s cared about this place for some time.

Isaac and Rowan hop out, the spring in their step giving you the hint that this is the place they usually come for their crazy power training. Rowan skips ahead to unlock the padlocked chain that keeps the big sliding metal door shut.
>>
>>32089586

You grab the roll cage and swing out to catch up to them. Such physical activity would have been outright painful just a couple days ago. You didn’t make it out of the firefight – and the events that transpired afterward – unscathed. You received numerous cuts, scrapes, and bruises. Not to mention Trevon probably snapped a couple of your ribs when he hit you with that crowbar. A couple days of taking it easy, though, and you’re pretty much right as rain. You didn’t even really have anybody look at your side. It’s not like you felt the compulsion to seek out medical attention. In your experience you spring back fairly quickly from physical injuries, so you don’t concern yourself with the details.

While Rowan fiddles with the padlock, Isaac takes a second to look you over. “I was thinking we’d take it slow today, but you don’t look as rough as you did at the start of the weekend. I can barely spot a scratch on you now,” he says, giving you a critical eye. He probably knows that you’re not a ‘handle with care’ package. “How comfortable are you with pushing yourself, Sierra?”
>>
>>32089602

You’ve been looking forward to having Isaac show you the ropes all day. While he doesn’t have your same abilities, he likely understands better than most what you should be capable of. Not to mention his extensive experience in training his kids and himself in the usage of supernatural abilities.

Hellborn is reasonably popular so stop getting so alarmed whenever votes get like this.

You snort at Isaac’s question. You’ve been cooped up all day in school. You’ve got energy to burn and curiosity to appease. “I can probably handle more than you can,” you say, smirking at him.

“We’ll see about that,” Rowan says as she unlocks the chains. She pushes herself into the door, forcing it rolling to the side. You and Isaac head in, as Rowan comes in and rolls the door shut again behind you.

This looks like somewhere batman would hang out. There are martial arts training dummies, sets of weights and other pieces of exercise equipment. A makeshift target range has been set up, though it looks more like something for archery than firearms. There were also a few dozen large, nondescript plastic boxes set up in neat rows.

Your motely band walks over to the central cluster of equipment. Rowan pops off the lids of one of the longer, oblong crates, and pulls out a humungous scabbard with blade inside.

“Remember, you said it, not me,” Isaac says, chuckling at the expression on your face. He then shakes his head and gives a wry smile. “I’m joking.”

“All the same, before we start doing anything funky,” you say, looking warily at Rowan’s sword and thinking of anything to talk about that might delay you getting any of your extremities lopped off, “I was kind of curious. You were talking about fire demons and sadness demons earlier. Are there any that… you know, do stuff with shadows?” you ask. “Like. Shadow demons, I guess.”
>>
>>32090642

Isaac gives you a sideways glance as he starts pulling out a bunch of sparring pads from another crate. “I take it you’re referring to something like the shadowmen urban legend,” he says. “Well you’re right, actually. They’re not something you’d want to run into.” There’s a chilling note to his words, as if he’s had first hand experience as to why you’d be better off not seeing one.

“Short story is that you don’t see a verwelkan if it doesn’t want you to see it,” says Rowan, flipping her sheathed sword about in some kind of training exercise. “And if you ever do see one, it’s too late.” This statement seems to harden her determination, causing her movements to become more precise and calculated as she completes some kind of form technique.

You frown slightly. “Uh. Yeah. Sounds like it,” you say.

>So should I be doing anything right now?
>So what about verwelkan hellborn? What kind of stuff would they be able to do?
>I get the feeling you have something personal against verwelk…ans? I’m guessing that’s the plural.

“So what kind of stuff can verwelkan hellborn do?” you ask, out of your pure love for knowledge.

Rowan stops moving for a second at the mention of verwelkan hellborn.

Isaac shakes his head as he begins donning pads. “I don't really know, to be honest. Verwelkans never comingle with humans,” he says, a little too slowly. “Them and their spawn can’t withstand the light of the sun, so the few that do… happen, tend to die. The ones that survive, you could probably count their number on one hand. I wouldn’t call it living though – their minds are broken.”

Seeing the way Rowan is clenching her jaw at the description of this particular type of hellborn cues you in that there’s some history there.
>>
>>32091136

“You saw this yourself once, didn’t you,” you say to Isaac, more a statement of fact than a question.

Isaac gives a dry smile, the kind that people use when springing surprisingly sad information about themselves upon others. “It’s what killed my father,” he says. His eyes grow cold at the mention of his dad’s death. He suddenly rubs his hands together in excitement. “But enough of that. Let’s get you started on something. Rowan, get your stretches out of the way while I get Sierra situated.”

A few minutes later, you’re demonstrating your ability to summon fire for Isaac.
“Let’s see it,” says the demonbane.

You’ve already discarded your jackets, but now you roll up your sleeves up to mid bicep. You’ve ruined far too many shirts learning caution when creating fire. “One pile of ash, coming right up,” you say. You walk toward the empty wood crate before you. The floor is concrete, so you’re not afraid of igniting a blaze. Instinctively, your hands twist into claws. The fire/claws combo just seems to go naturally. With a flex of will, a shimmer of flame outlines your hands. You grab the edge of the box, which bursts into flames at your touch.

You rip out a loose board from the crate and hold it up for Isaac to see. Then you increase the intensity of the fire, burning the wood to ash as you hold it. The board cracks in half and clatters to the floor. You take a step back so your shoes don’t melt. You grin up at him. “Cool, am I right?”

“Have you ever tried projecting the heat somewhere other than your hands?” Isaac asks, firelight dancing in his eyes. He sees your lack of understanding, and walks over to your side. He shows you a some tai chi BS that’s supposed to move your inner energy around or something. After a couple minutes, you kind of catch on to the essence of the technique.

Isaac folds his arms in satisfaction and takes a step back. “I think you can take it from here.”
>>
>>32091751

Experimentally, you rotate your arms as one in a smooth, graceful arc. “Yeah… I got this,” you say, narrowing your eyes as you channel your inner fire as usual. Except this time, you combine it with the physical form and movement – at the apex of your arm thrust, you ignite your will into fire. Instead of coating your hands, however, a bolt of flame blasts forward through the air, and smashes into the inner warehouse wall at about eye level.

You watch the fire catch hold and begin to burn. “Whoops,” you say, pursing your lips together.

>Ability learned: Hellbolt. 2d5 fire damage, Range: Short; Cost: 5 PP

“Shit,” Isaac swears. He sweeps down the grab the strategically placed fire extinguisher and runs off to save the batcave from burning down. A few tense moments later, he comes back with the red extinguisher, rubbing the perspiration from his forehead with his free arm. “Maybe we should work on something else for a while,” he says. “Let’s go to the mat.”

You walk in Rowan’s direction, where she is now busy spinning her sword about in long, deadly arcs. When you get closer, Isaac whistles to catch her attention. “Hey Ro,” he says. “Give Sierra the rundown – don’t go easy on her.”

Rowan stabs her sword into the ground and looks at you calculatingly.

“Uh. Don’t I need some pads or like, safety gear or something?” you ask as you step onto the mat, looking over your shoulder at Isaac.
>>
>>32091772

Rowan grins mischievously. “I wouldn’t worry about that if I were you,” she says, hefting her sword into her grip. She has a pair of chainmail gloves on, and you notice (strangely) that she has one hand on the blade of the sword, above the hand guard. The chainmail keeps her from cutting herself. She’s wearing a dark black t-shirt. Never really having seen Rowan without a hoodie before, you have to say she’s a lot more ripped than you expected her to be. She’s got some serious muscle.

“Don’t break anything, either of you,” Isaac orders.

“If you say so,” Ro replies playfully, advancing a step toward you. She moves with caution.

You flex your claws, fairly certain you could catch her blade with them if you need to.

On another note, typically quests use a 'higher is better' system, since it's hard to fake. After all, someone could just do 1d20-ish or less and it would look like a good roll at first glance, until someone check's em. Or even use d1s.

Rowan obviously knows what she’s doing, and that puts you on edge. (+3 Stress 35/100) The best way to handle this is to try to catch her off guard. You begin circling in an attempt to get her off balance. “So you do this kind of thing often?” you ask, trying to get her talking. A talking person wasn’t a person paying full attention to what you were doing.

“Enough,” Rowan answers, keeping her eyes locked on you. She doesn’t even blink. “You?”

Crap. She’s trying to turn the talk around on you – you can tell from the look in her eyes. “Not with the other guy having a sword, no,” you say.

“That’s what I expected,” Rowan says, giving a sharp smile.

She lunges forward and swings at you. You bring your claws up to arrest the blade, but Rowan relinquishes one hand’s grip on the blade and takes advantage of your focus on the block to deliver a powerful strike to your abdomen – doubling over you try to kick her, but the girl grabs your leg and rolls, taking you along with her.

The entire world spins, and then you’re on your stomach, the edge of the sword hovering a half-inch above the back of your neck and Rowan keeping a knee firmly planted in your back. (+5 Stress 40/100)

QM's generally ignore a slew of average/decent/poor rolls in favour of that one crit (good or bad).

That, and I think he meant he only takes the first three rolls of the decided upon option. So if one guy decided to rush her and rolled 36, the QM would ignore his roll in favour of the three guys that rolled to bait her and rolled 66, 71 and 83.

You wince as your brain takes you to the conclusion of that statement and you accidentally picture Rowan sans clothing, all muscled out and disgusting. (+5 Stress 40/100) Eghck.

Fortunately, the joke does as much to make Rowan uncomfortable as it does you, and she can’t leap off of you fast enough. “Don’t even go there,” she says in warning, stepping back a couple paces. Her discomfort mitigates your own. (-5 Stress 35/100) Good thing she didn’t push that topic any further, or you would have come out the net loser.

You push yourself to your feet, leaving scratch marks on the mat, and turn to face her.

“Sierra, try not to let her distract you,” Isaac tells you unhelpfully. Geeze, that was your plan, not hers. She just turned it around on you.

“I’ll keep that in mind!” you say angrily, keeping Rowan in your sights.

Rowan assumes the same cautious, hand-on-blade stance, and begins circling.

That fucking sword. Knives, guns, whatever, you can beat them out in a one-on-one fight. But Trevon with his claws and his crowbar – Rowan with her sword – they’re playing to their strengths, and you can’t win on their turf. You need to change the rules. Up close, Rowan can’t use the blade against you.

The best defense is a good offense. Sage wisdom. You scream a battle cry and charge.

Rowan braces herself just as you slam into her, but the ferocity of your momentum takes her off balance. Keeping one set of claws on the blade so it doesn’t cut you, you wind up smashing her backwards so that she collapses back onto the ground. Using your leverage to wedge her blade off to the side harmlessly, you touch a claw to her exposed throat. “Tag, you’re it,” you say, giving a toothsome grin.

Being in such a position of power makes you feel… predatory. You find yourself looking at the creature below you from a different angle. What, exactly, it would take to kill her. To end her life.

“That’s enough,” says Isaac.

But you can’t look away. Your dark musings must show in your eyes, because Rowan unceremoniously shoves you off.
>>
>>32093813

You hit the matt and roll into a crouch. The sudden movement snaps you out of your daze, but when you look back at Rowan, you still can’t unsee her vulnerability from where she lies. (Rowan: 15/15 HP) You shiver involuntarily.

>Ability learned: Sense weakness. You can now comprehend the vitality of your opponents.

Isaac walks over and helps Rowan to her feet. She looks down at you suspiciously. “What was that weird look in your eyes all about?” she asks, rubbing her throat where you had traced your claw. You weren’t about to do anything dangerous, were you? (+5 Stress: 40/100)

“You just surprised me is all,” you say nonchalantly as you stand up. You feel a little bit more potent after the fight. (HP: 11/12 PP: 12/12) “I mean, you’ve been doing this kind of thing since you were a little kid, right? Didn’t think I had a chance,” you continue, rambling. “And then that happened and I guess I didn’t think that far ahead so I spaced? I mean, usually in a fight I’d just kill you or something, but ah. You know. We’re supposed to not be killing each other.”

Rowan seems to accept this argument, though Isaac gives you a long look. He’s about to say something when a weird noise interrupts him. CHIRP. It’s like a highpitched whistle or something. You look around for the source, but Isaac stops you. “That’s me,” he says. He pauses to pull something out of his back pocket. It’s a flat piece of steel carved into an odd panhandle shape. A dot of light burns brightly on the surface. “Dammit, now?” he says loudly, edging toward the exit where the car is parked. “Ro, grab the gear, the meeting’s happening.”

Rowan nods and dashes over to the equipment stash. She grabs a duffel bag and begins shoving items into it.

“What? What’s happening?” you ask, sensing Isaac’s distress.

He pops open a container and withdraws a thick bundle of sharpened metal rods. “Trevon’s meeting with his boss,” he says, turning and running toward the door.

“You said you killed him!” you yell after Isaac. Fucking Trevon got Monster killed, and fucking Trevon isn’t even fucking dead? (+10 Stress 50/100)

“No I didn’t!” Isaac yells back, continuing in his flight.

All you know, now, is that apparently the Hallows are prepping to go somewhere where that fucker is still breathing. You’re going to help them get there, and you’re also going to be there. How can you help? Your palms tingle with undirected energy. You see Rowan throwing things into a bag, so you run over to help.

“Get everything in that box,” she orders, pointing. You do as she says, and empty the contents of said box into another duffel bag. Looks like a bulletproof vest, a motorcycle helmet, and a pair of rollerblades? What the hell?

She scoops up both bags and makes a beeline for the door. You keep up beside her. “How can he not be dead? He took a fucking crossbow bolt to the spine – and then it blasted him with angel fire or whatever!”

“Dad wasn’t trying to kill him,” she says. “He was trying to find him – why do you think he was following the crip that you beat up for being on blood turf?”

“I – what?” This is news to you. “Well for not trying to kill somebody he did a pretty fucking sloppy job of it,” you reply with a scowl.

“That hellborn took a dozen gunshots to the chest and still managed to get the better of you in a fight,” Rowan shoots back. “I think dad was right in assuming he’d survive the hit.”
>>
>>32094802

“Why the hell shoot him if he didn’t want him to die?”

“Ugh!” Rowan yells, having enough of your ignorance. “He laced him with a tracker so we could find the guy giving him orders!!”

You reach the door - you scoop up your jackets from where you left them and while Rowan runs to the jeep while you fiddle with the lock up. The jeep’s already moving when you run up tojump into the back. Isaac floors it and you speed off. As you drive, Rowan begins changing her clothes into the stuff from the bags you grabbed.

“Sierra, reach under your seat for me,” Isaac says, his voice calm.

You do as you are directed, and come pulling out a heavy crossbow. And it’s really heavy. The weight of it feels like it’s crushing you – there’s no way you’d want to run with this thing in your arms.

>What exactly are you planning to do when we get wherever we’re going?

“Holy hell,” you say, looking down at the medieval weapon in your hands. “You planning to call a crusade when we get wherever you’re going?”

“That’s the gist of it,” Isaac says, blazing past a stop sign – now even you begin to feel a little bit antsy. You buckle your seat belt. (+2 Stress 52/100)

Trevon had some boss that didn’t sound like anyone related to the crips. That might explain where he got the wild idea to attack Cobra Manor a couple days ago. “Someone told Trevon to wipe us out,” you say, realizing there might be more people to blame for getting your best bro killed. “Fuck – he nearly did wipe us out! He burned down my fucking house!” you yell. “Who’s pulling his strings? Fuck if I don’t burn him up too!” Contemplating revenge gets your blood boiling. (+5 Stress 57/100)

Isaac glances at you in the mirror. “You need to keep a level head, Sierra,” he says, no edge or wiggle room in his words.

You take a deep breath. (-3 Stress 54/100) “Who’s his boss, and why’d they try to kill my bloods?” you ask, trying to keep your voice even.

Rowan answers, even as she straps up into a bullet-proof vest. “There’s a demon lord in San Fran by the name of Meckor,” she says. “He’s been muscling for more control in the city for months – our ticket to him is through one of his lieutenants.”
>>
>>32095673
Is roasting his balls with our flame hands alright? Or shall we just make him depressed?
>>
>>32095711

Isaac continues the explanation. “Trevon is a first degree contact of one of Meckor’s seven lieutenants. I figured out a couple places the crony likes to meet with his underlings, but I can never catch him when he’s at home,” he says, sounding frustrated. “I marked all the likely locations, and then marked the hellborn with the counter-marker.”

Rowan ties her hair into a ponytail. “And he just tripped one of dad’s wards,” she says.

You understand the plan, now. Somehow, Isaac is using Trevon as a smoke signal to crash a party. “So wait – this guy Trevon is meeting, is he hellborn too?”

Isaac’s grip tightens on the wheel. “Meckor hates humans – he wouldn’t keep a hellborn in confidence. His lackey is a full-fledged demon – probably Stygian, if what I’ve heard is true. Ro, call Zakrevski, tell him to haul it down here.”

Rowan nods and dials a number on her cell.

>Hellborn, demon, whatever. He’s dead. And so is that fucker Trevon.

“Doesn’t matter what he is,” you say calmly. “He’s dead. So how are we going to play this? I mean, this Meckor dude, he sounds legit. I doubt his guys are just going to lie down and die – they’ve got manpower, yeah? And you’re getting all medieval up here, what do I get? There some holy claw hammer of smiting around here or what?”

Isaac glances back at you. “It doesn’t take anything special to kill a demon. They bleed just like we do - most of the time,” he says.

“Hey Boris,” says Rowan, getting a pickup on the phone – the way she says Boris takes you a second – it’s not BORE-is, she says it Bore-EESE. You almost think it’s a girl name, if not for the ragged voice that answers her. “We need you at the old strip mall – we’re pretty much there. You’re at Muir, right? Good, I’ll tell dad.” She hangs up. “He’ll be there in ten,” she says, frowning.

Isaac slams the wheel. “We don’t have that kind of time,” he says, pulling into an empty parking lot and driving toward a big building that looks like it used to be a Costco or something. All the stores around you are run down and have vacant storefronts and empty interiors. He drives by the front and parks by the side, kind of by the dumpsters, where you don’t stick out as much.

“We have to hit them now,” Isaac says, looking at his daughter.

“Plan, what’s the plan?” you ask, getting antsy. Rowan dons a riot helmet, though keeps the visor flipped up. She begins buckling on the rollerblades. What the hell was she doing?

You fight inwardly with yourself for a brief second. You wish you could tell Isaac what he wants to hear, but there’s a part of you that you don’t control. You don’t know what’s going to happen when you walk through those doors. But it doesn’t mean you won’t give it your best shot. “I’ll try,” you say, more to yourself than to him. You’d prefer having clear memory of the moment you kill Trevon anyway.

Rowan looks from you to her dad.

Isaac clenches the hand he pointed at you with into a ball, obviously at odds and ends with the prospect of taking an unstable hellborn with him into a battle situation, but aware there is absolutely nothing he can do about it. He grimaces. “That’s what I expected,” he says. He shakes his head and hops out of the jeep with weapon in hand, letting a breath out from between his teeth as he goes.

Rowan eyes you searchingly, but says nothing as she hops out and skates around to her dad’s side.

You disembark. Putting feet to the ground behind the two demonbane, you look up at the monolithic store wall. For everyone inside, there’s hell to pay, and you intend to see the debt satisfied in full.

--End Part 5--

That was something, wasn’t it? I hope you were entertained. I myself was pleasantly surprised at how things turned out. About that last choice, I have to say that the differences, though slight, are significant in context. Anyway, the next game should be Friday morning, as it’s the only time I can realistically run. I’m thinking 9:00 AM or even 8:00AM MST to 3:00PM. Unless nobody can manage that, in which case I can hold off to running Saturday night from 4:00 onward. Opinions?

So how’s the quest going? What’s going well, what’s not? What do you enjoy? What can I improve upon? Feedback is appreciated.

After all is said and done though, thanks for playing.

It was posted 7 seconds after the QM posted his final destination vote. I figured even someone with a double digit IQ could reason that I was replying before I saw it.

Thanks for running! The threads are really good, and I like just about everything. It's pretty annoying when people vote for options I don't like, so one way you could improve is by forcing people to agree with me, or only offering the options I would choose.

He just made a list of votes that are not legit. Contain your autism.

And you're calling me autistic?

I'm looking forward to dicking around with shadow powers. That'll be cool.

I can get behind that timeframe. It'll be afternoon here so I'll not miss the whole thing for once.

I really like this quest. Enjoyable read, man.

>Then again, most of my time is restricted to art dump threads/character art threads
You are now manually aware that 4chanX lets you queue stuff up to submit. Well, it's only really useful when you have a pass.

Schnazzy. Good to know.
I installed it for chrome, but it seems a bit wonky. I've been seeing all sorts of double posts this thread.
